उत्तर उवाच ।
आस्थाय विपुलं वीर रथं सारथिना मया ।
कतमं यास्यसेऽनीकमुक्तो यास्याम्यहं त्वया ॥१॥
1. uttara uvāca ,
āsthāya vipulaṁ vīra rathaṁ sārathinā mayā ,
katamaṁ yāsyase'nīkamukto yāsyāmyahaṁ tvayā.

mayā katamam yāsyase anīkam uktaḥ yāsyāmi aham tvayā
1. Uttara said: "O hero, having mounted this mighty chariot, with me as your charioteer, to which division (anīka) of the army will you proceed? I will drive as instructed by you."
अर्जुन उवाच ।
प्रीतोऽस्मि पुरुषव्याघ्र न भयं विद्यते तव ।
सर्वान्नुदामि ते शत्रून्रणे रणविशारद ॥२॥
2. arjuna uvāca ,
prīto'smi puruṣavyāghra na bhayaṁ vidyate tava ,
sarvānnudāmi te śatrūnraṇe raṇaviśārada.
2. arjunaḥ uvāca | prītaḥ asmi puruṣavyāghra na bhayam
vidyate tava | sarvān nudāmi te śatrūn raṇe raṇaviśārada
2. Arjuna said: O best among men, I am pleased. You have no cause for fear. O expert in battle, I will drive away all your enemies in the fight.
स्वस्थो भव महाबुद्धे पश्य मां शत्रुभिः सह ।
युध्यमानं विमर्देऽस्मिन्कुर्वाणं भैरवं महत् ॥३॥
3. svastho bhava mahābuddhe paśya māṁ śatrubhiḥ saha ,
yudhyamānaṁ vimarde'sminkurvāṇaṁ bhairavaṁ mahat.
3. svasthaḥ bhava mahābuddhe paśya mām śatrubhiḥ saha
| yudhyamānam vimarde asmin kurvāṇam bhairavam mahat
3. O great-minded one, be at ease! Behold me fighting with the enemies in this conflict, creating great terror!
एतान्सर्वानुपासङ्गान्क्षिप्रं बध्नीहि मे रथे ।
एतं चाहर निस्त्रिंशं जातरूपपरिष्कृतम् ।
अहं वै कुरुभिर्योत्स्याम्यवजेष्यामि ते पशून् ॥४॥
4. etānsarvānupāsaṅgānkṣipraṁ badhnīhi me rathe ,
etaṁ cāhara nistriṁśaṁ jātarūpapariṣkṛtam ,
ahaṁ vai kurubhiryotsyāmyavajeṣyāmi te paśūn.
4. etān sarvān upāsaṅgān kṣipram badhnīhi
me rathe | etam ca āhara nistriṃśam
jātarūpaparikṛtam | aham vai
kurubhiḥ yotsyāmi avajeṣyāmi te paśūn
4. Quickly attach all these quivers to my chariot, and bring this gold-adorned sword! I will indeed fight with the Kurus, and I will conquer your adversaries.
संकल्पपक्षविक्षेपं बाहुप्राकारतोरणम् ।
त्रिदण्डतूणसंबाधमनेकध्वजसंकुलम् ॥५॥
5. saṁkalpapakṣavikṣepaṁ bāhuprākāratoraṇam ,
tridaṇḍatūṇasaṁbādhamanekadhvajasaṁkulam.
5. saṅkalpapakṣavikṣepam bāhuprākāratoraṇam |
tridaṇḍatūṇasaṃbādham anekadhvajasaṃkulam
5. It will be characterized by a will that spreads like wings, with arms like fortress walls and archways, filled with quivers containing three-shafted arrows, and crowded with many banners.
ज्याक्षेपणं क्रोधकृतं नेमीनिनददुन्दुभि ।
नगरं ते मया गुप्तं रथोपस्थं भविष्यति ॥६॥
6. jyākṣepaṇaṁ krodhakṛtaṁ nemīninadadundubhi ,
nagaraṁ te mayā guptaṁ rathopasthaṁ bhaviṣyati.
6. jyākṣepaṇam krodhakṛtam nemīninadadundubhiḥ
nagaram te mayā guptam rathopastham bhaviṣyati
6. The twanging of the bowstring, done in anger, and the sound of the chariot wheels, like a battle drum, will guard your city, protected by me from this chariot.
अधिष्ठितो मया संख्ये रथो गाण्डीवधन्वना ।
अजेयः शत्रुसैन्यानां वैराटे व्येतु ते भयम् ॥७॥
7. adhiṣṭhito mayā saṁkhye ratho gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ,
ajeyaḥ śatrusainyānāṁ vairāṭe vyetu te bhayam.
7. adhiṣṭhitaḥ mayā saṃkhye rathaḥ gāṇḍīvadhanvanā
ajeyaḥ śatrusainyānām vairāṭe vyetu te bhayam
7. Let your fear depart, O son of Virāṭa! This chariot, driven by me, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva (bow), will be invincible to enemy armies in battle.
उत्तर उवाच ।
बिभेमि नाहमेतेषां जानामि त्वां स्थिरं युधि ।
केशवेनापि संग्रामे साक्षादिन्द्रेण वा समम् ॥८॥
8. uttara uvāca ,
bibhemi nāhameteṣāṁ jānāmi tvāṁ sthiraṁ yudhi ,
keśavenāpi saṁgrāme sākṣādindreṇa vā samam.
8. uttaraḥ uvāca bibhemi na aham eteṣām jānāmi tvām sthiram
yudhi keśavena api saṃgrāme sākṣāt indreṇa vā samam
8. Uttara said: "I do not fear these (enemies). I know you to be steadfast in battle, equal to Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) himself or even Indra in combat."
इदं तु चिन्तयन्नेव परिमुह्यामि केवलम् ।
निश्चयं चापि दुर्मेधा न गच्छामि कथंचन ॥९॥
9. idaṁ tu cintayanneva parimuhyāmi kevalam ,
niścayaṁ cāpi durmedhā na gacchāmi kathaṁcana.
9. idam tu cintayan eva parimuhyāmi kevalam
niścayam ca api durmedhāḥ na gacchāmi kathaṃcana
9. However, merely by reflecting on this, I become utterly bewildered. And being dull-witted (durmedhā), I am unable to reach any certain decision.
एवं वीराङ्गरूपस्य लक्षणैरुचितस्य च ।
केन कर्मविपाकेन क्लीबत्वमिदमागतम् ॥१०॥
10. evaṁ vīrāṅgarūpasya lakṣaṇairucitasya ca ,
kena karmavipākena klībatvamidamāgatam.
10. evam vīrāṅgarūpasya lakṣaṇaiḥ ucitasya ca
kena karmavipākena klībatvam idam āgatam
10. Considering this heroic physique, adorned with appropriate characteristics, by what ripening of past actions (karma) has this effeminate state come about?
मन्ये त्वां क्लीबवेषेण चरन्तं शूलपाणिनम् ।
गन्धर्वराजप्रतिमं देवं वापि शतक्रतुम् ॥११॥
11. manye tvāṁ klībaveṣeṇa carantaṁ śūlapāṇinam ,
gandharvarājapratimaṁ devaṁ vāpi śatakratum.
11. manye tvām klībaveṣeṇa carantam śūlapāṇinam
gandharvarājapratimam devam vā api śatakratum
11. I consider you, disguised as a eunuch, to be Śūlapāṇi (Lord Shiva), or even a god resembling the king of the Gandharvas, or Śatakratu (Indra).
अर्जुन उवाच ।
भ्रातुर्नियोगाज्ज्येष्ठस्य संवत्सरमिदं व्रतम् ।
चरामि ब्रह्मचर्यं वै सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१२॥
12. arjuna uvāca ,
bhrāturniyogājjyeṣṭhasya saṁvatsaramidaṁ vratam ,
carāmi brahmacaryaṁ vai satyametadbravīmi te.
12. arjuna uvāca bhrātuḥ niyogāt jyeṣṭhasya saṃvatsaram idam
vratam carāmi brahmacaryam vai satyam etat bravīmi te
12. Arjuna said: "By the command of my eldest brother, I am observing this vow of celibacy (brahmacarya) for a year. Indeed, I tell you this truth."
नास्मि क्लीबो महाबाहो परवान्धर्मसंयुतः ।
समाप्तव्रतमुत्तीर्णं विद्धि मां त्वं नृपात्मज ॥१३॥
13. nāsmi klībo mahābāho paravāndharmasaṁyutaḥ ,
samāptavratamuttīrṇaṁ viddhi māṁ tvaṁ nṛpātmaja.
13. na asmi klībaḥ mahābāho paravān dharmasaṃyutaḥ
samāptavratam uttīrṇam viddhi mām tvam nṛpātmaja
13. O mighty-armed one, I am neither effeminate nor dependent on others; rather, I am devoted to my own natural law (dharma). O prince, know that I have completed my vow and emerged (from this state).
उत्तर उवाच ।
परमोऽनुग्रहो मेऽद्य यत्प्रतर्को न मे वृथा ।
न हीदृशाः क्लीबरूपा भवन्तीह नरोत्तमाः ॥१४॥
14. uttara uvāca ,
paramo'nugraho me'dya yatpratarko na me vṛthā ,
na hīdṛśāḥ klībarūpā bhavantīha narottamāḥ.
14. uttaraḥ uvāca paramaḥ anugrahaḥ me adya yat pratarkaḥ na
me vṛthā na hi īdṛśāḥ klībarūpāḥ bhavanti iha narottamāḥ
14. Uttara said: This is a supreme favor for me today, because my conjecture was not in vain. Indeed, excellent men (puruṣa) do not assume such an effeminate appearance here.
सहायवानस्मि रणे युध्येयममरैरपि ।
साध्वसं तत्प्रनष्टं मे किं करोमि ब्रवीहि मे ॥१५॥
15. sahāyavānasmi raṇe yudhyeyamamarairapi ,
sādhvasaṁ tatpranaṣṭaṁ me kiṁ karomi bravīhi me.
15. sahāyavān asmi raṇe yudhyeyam amaraiḥ api
sādhvasam tat pranaṣṭam me kim karomi bravīhi me
15. I am now assisted in battle; I could fight even with the immortals. My fear has completely vanished. What should I do? Tell me.
अहं ते संग्रहीष्यामि हयाञ्शत्रुरथारुजः ।
शिक्षितो ह्यस्मि सारथ्ये तीर्थतः पुरुषर्षभ ॥१६॥
16. ahaṁ te saṁgrahīṣyāmi hayāñśatrurathārujaḥ ,
śikṣito hyasmi sārathye tīrthataḥ puruṣarṣabha.
16. aham te saṅgrahīṣyāmi hayān śatrurathārujaḥ
śikṣitaḥ hi asmi sārathye tīrthataḥ puruṣarṣabha
16. I, who am the destroyer of enemy chariots, will take control of your horses. For I am indeed trained in charioteering by a proper teacher, O best among men (puruṣa).
दारुको वासुदेवस्य यथा शक्रस्य मातलिः ।
तथा मां विद्धि सारथ्ये शिक्षितं नरपुंगव ॥१७॥
17. dāruko vāsudevasya yathā śakrasya mātaliḥ ,
tathā māṁ viddhi sārathye śikṣitaṁ narapuṁgava.
17. dārukaḥ vāsudevasya yathā śakrasya mātaliḥ
tathā mām viddhi sārathye śikṣitam narapuṅgava
17. Just as Daruka serves Vasudeva (Krishna) and Matali serves Shakra (Indra), so know me, who is trained in charioteering, O excellent man (puruṣa).
यस्य याते न पश्यन्ति भूमौ प्राप्तं पदं पदम् ।
दक्षिणं यो धुरं युक्तः सुग्रीवसदृशो हयः ॥१८॥
18. yasya yāte na paśyanti bhūmau prāptaṁ padaṁ padam ,
dakṣiṇaṁ yo dhuraṁ yuktaḥ sugrīvasadṛśo hayaḥ.
18. yasya yāte na paśyanti bhūmau prāptam padam padam
dakṣiṇam yaḥ dhuram yuktaḥ sugrīvasadṛśaḥ hayaḥ
18. That horse, yoked to the right side (of the chariot) and resembling Sugrīva, moves with such speed that when it goes, people do not see its footprint (pada) on the ground.
योऽयं धुरं धुर्यवरो वामं वहति शोभनः ।
तं मन्ये मेघपुष्पस्य जवेन सदृशं हयम् ॥१९॥
19. yo'yaṁ dhuraṁ dhuryavaro vāmaṁ vahati śobhanaḥ ,
taṁ manye meghapuṣpasya javena sadṛśaṁ hayam.
19. yaḥ ayam dhuram dhuryavaraḥ vāmam vahati śobhanaḥ
tam manye meghapuṣpasya javena sadṛśam hayam
19. I consider this excellent and beautiful horse, the best among the draught animals, which pulls the left side (of the yoke), to be similar in speed to Meghapuṣpa.
योऽयं काञ्चनसंनाहः पार्ष्णिं वहति शोभनः ।
वामं सैन्यस्य मन्ये तं जवेन बलवत्तरम् ॥२०॥
20. yo'yaṁ kāñcanasaṁnāhaḥ pārṣṇiṁ vahati śobhanaḥ ,
vāmaṁ sainyasya manye taṁ javena balavattaram.
20. yaḥ ayam kāñcanasaṃnāhaḥ pārṣṇim vahati śobhanaḥ
vāmam sainyasya manye tam javena balavattaram
20. I consider this splendid horse, adorned with golden armor, which pulls the rear flank of the army to the left, to be very powerful in speed.
योऽयं वहति ते पार्ष्णिं दक्षिणामञ्चितोद्यतः ।
बलाहकादपि मतः स जवे वीर्यवत्तरः ॥२१॥
21. yo'yaṁ vahati te pārṣṇiṁ dakṣiṇāmañcitodyataḥ ,
balāhakādapi mataḥ sa jave vīryavattaraḥ.
21. yaḥ ayam vahati te pārṣṇim dakṣiṇām añcitodyataḥ
balāhakāt api mataḥ saḥ jave vīryavattaraḥ
21. This horse, which is gracefully poised and pulls your right rear flank, is considered even more powerful in speed than Balāhaka.
त्वामेवायं रथो वोढुं संग्रामेऽर्हति धन्विनम् ।
त्वं चेमं रथमास्थाय योद्धुमर्हो मतो मम ॥२२॥
22. tvāmevāyaṁ ratho voḍhuṁ saṁgrāme'rhati dhanvinam ,
tvaṁ cemaṁ rathamāsthāya yoddhumarho mato mama.
22. tvām eva ayam rathaḥ voḍhum saṃgrāme arhati dhanvinam
| tvam ca imam ratham āsthāya yoddhum arhaḥ mataḥ mama
22. This chariot is capable of carrying only you, the archer, in battle. And it is my opinion that you are fit to fight having mounted this chariot.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो निर्मुच्य बाहुभ्यां वलयानि स वीर्यवान् ।
चित्रे दुन्दुभिसंनादे प्रत्यमुञ्चत्तले शुभे ॥२३॥
23. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato nirmucya bāhubhyāṁ valayāni sa vīryavān ,
citre dundubhisaṁnāde pratyamuñcattale śubhe.
23. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | tataḥ nirmucya bāhubhyām valayāni sa
vīryavān | citre dundubhi saṃnāde praty amuñcat tale śubhe
23. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, that mighty one, having removed the bracelets from his two arms, fastened the auspicious armguards amidst the varied sound of the drums.
कृष्णान्भङ्गीमतः केशाञ्श्वेतेनोद्ग्रथ्य वाससा ।
अधिज्यं तरसा कृत्वा गाण्डीवं व्याक्षिपद्धनुः ॥२४॥
24. kṛṣṇānbhaṅgīmataḥ keśāñśvetenodgrathya vāsasā ,
adhijyaṁ tarasā kṛtvā gāṇḍīvaṁ vyākṣipaddhanuḥ.
24. kṛṣṇān bhaṅgīmataḥ keśān śvetena udgrathya vāsasā
| adhijyam tarasā kṛtvā gāṇḍīvam vyākṣipat dhanuḥ
24. Having tied up his black, curly hair with a white cloth, he forcefully strung the Gāṇḍīva bow and drew it.
तस्य विक्षिप्यमाणस्य धनुषोऽभून्महास्वनः ।
यथा शैलस्य महतः शैलेनैवाभिजघ्नुषः ॥२५॥
25. tasya vikṣipyamāṇasya dhanuṣo'bhūnmahāsvanaḥ ,
yathā śailasya mahataḥ śailenaivābhijaghnuṣaḥ.
25. tasya vikṣipyamāṇasya dhanuṣaḥ abhūt mahāsvanaḥ |
yathā śailasya mahataḥ śailena eva abhijaghnuṣaḥ
25. As his bow was being drawn, a tremendous sound emanated, like that of a huge mountain striking another mountain.
सनिर्घाताभवद्भूमिर्दिक्षु वायुर्ववौ भृशम् ।
भ्रान्तद्विजं खं तदासीत्प्रकम्पितमहाद्रुमम् ॥२६॥
26. sanirghātābhavadbhūmirdikṣu vāyurvavau bhṛśam ,
bhrāntadvijaṁ khaṁ tadāsītprakampitamahādrumam.
26. sa-nirghātā abhavat bhūmiḥ dikṣu vāyuḥ vavau bhṛśam
bhrānta-dvijam kham tadā āsīt prakampita-mahādrumam
26. The earth became thunderous, and the wind blew fiercely in all directions. At that time, the sky was filled with agitated birds, and the mighty trees trembled greatly.
तं शब्दं कुरवोऽजानन्विस्फोटमशनेरिव ।
यदर्जुनो धनुःश्रेष्ठं बाहुभ्यामाक्षिपद्रथे ॥२७॥
27. taṁ śabdaṁ kuravo'jānanvisphoṭamaśaneriva ,
yadarjuno dhanuḥśreṣṭhaṁ bāhubhyāmākṣipadrathe.
27. tam śabdam kuravaḥ ajānan visphoṭam aśaneḥ iva yat
arjunaḥ dhanuḥ-śreṣṭham bāhubhyām ākṣipat rathe
27. The Kurus knew that sound to be like the explosion of a thunderbolt, because Arjuna was twanging his excellent bow with his two arms while in his chariot.
