बृहदश्व उवाच ।
अपक्रान्ते नले राजन्दमयन्ती गतक्लमा ।
अबुध्यत वरारोहा संत्रस्ता विजने वने ॥१॥
1. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
apakrānte nale rājandamayantī gataklamā ,
abudhyata varārohā saṁtrastā vijane vane.

1. Bṛhadaśva said: 'O King, after Nala had departed, Damayantī, the beautiful lady, her weariness dispelled, awoke, terrified in the solitary forest.'
सापश्यमाना भर्तारं दुःखशोकसमन्विता ।
प्राक्रोशदुच्चैः संत्रस्ता महाराजेति नैषधम् ॥२॥
2. sāpaśyamānā bhartāraṁ duḥkhaśokasamanvitā ,
prākrośaduccaiḥ saṁtrastā mahārājeti naiṣadham.
2. sā apaśyamānā bhartāram duḥkhaśokasammanvitā
prākrośat uccaiḥ saṃtrastā mahārāja iti naiṣadham
2. Not seeing her husband, she (Damayantī), filled with sorrow and grief, cried out loudly and terrified, 'O great king!' as she called out to Nala.
हा नाथ हा महाराज हा स्वामिन्किं जहासि माम् ।
हा हतास्मि विनष्टास्मि भीतास्मि विजने वने ॥३॥
3. hā nātha hā mahārāja hā svāminkiṁ jahāsi mām ,
hā hatāsmi vinaṣṭāsmi bhītāsmi vijane vane.
3. hā nātha hā mahārāja hā svāmin kim jahāsi mām hā
hatā asmi vinaṣṭā asmi bhītā asmi vijane vane
3. Alas, my lord! Alas, O great king! Alas, my master! Why do you abandon me? Oh, I am ruined! I am lost! I am terrified in this desolate forest.
ननु नाम महाराज धर्मज्ञः सत्यवागसि ।
कथमुक्त्वा तथासत्यं सुप्तामुत्सृज्य मां गतः ॥४॥
4. nanu nāma mahārāja dharmajñaḥ satyavāgasi ,
kathamuktvā tathāsatyaṁ suptāmutsṛjya māṁ gataḥ.
4. nanu nāma mahārāja dharmajñaḥ satyavāk asi katham
uktvā tathā asatyam suptām utsṛjya mām gataḥ
4. Surely, O great king, you are known as one who understands righteousness (dharma) and speaks the truth. How could you, having spoken such a falsehood, abandon me while I was asleep and then depart?
कथमुत्सृज्य गन्तासि वश्यां भार्यामनुव्रताम् ।
विशेषतोऽनपकृते परेणापकृते सति ॥५॥
5. kathamutsṛjya gantāsi vaśyāṁ bhāryāmanuvratām ,
viśeṣato'napakṛte pareṇāpakṛte sati.
5. katham utsṛjya gantā asi vaśyām bhāryām
anuvratām viśeṣataḥ anapakṛte pareṇa apakṛte sati
5. How can you abandon your obedient and devoted wife, and then depart, especially when I have done no wrong, and when an offense has been committed by another?
शक्ष्यसे ता गिरः सत्याः कर्तुं मयि नरेश्वर ।
यास्त्वया लोकपालानां संनिधौ कथिताः पुरा ॥६॥
6. śakṣyase tā giraḥ satyāḥ kartuṁ mayi nareśvara ,
yāstvayā lokapālānāṁ saṁnidhau kathitāḥ purā.
6. śakṣyase tāḥ giraḥ satyāḥ kartum mayi nareśvara
yāḥ tvayā lokapālānām saṃnidhau kathitāḥ purā
6. O lord of men, will you be able to make those promises true for me, which were spoken by you long ago in the presence of the world-protectors?
पर्याप्तः परिहासोऽयमेतावान्पुरुषर्षभ ।
भीताहमस्मि दुर्धर्ष दर्शयात्मानमीश्वर ॥७॥
7. paryāptaḥ parihāso'yametāvānpuruṣarṣabha ,
bhītāhamasmi durdharṣa darśayātmānamīśvara.
7. paryāptaḥ parihāsaḥ ayam etāvān puruṣarṣabha
bhītā aham asmi durdharṣa darśaya ātmānam īśvara
7. This much joking is enough, O best among men (puruṣarṣabha)! I am afraid, O unconquerable one. Reveal your true self (ātman), O lord.
दृश्यसे दृश्यसे राजन्नेष तिष्ठसि नैषध ।
आवार्य गुल्मैरात्मानं किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥८॥
8. dṛśyase dṛśyase rājanneṣa tiṣṭhasi naiṣadha ,
āvārya gulmairātmānaṁ kiṁ māṁ na pratibhāṣase.
8. dṛśyase dṛśyase rājan eṣa tiṣṭhasi naiṣadha
āvārya gulmaiḥ ātmānam kim mām na pratibhāṣase
8. O King, O Nala (naiṣadha), you are seen, you are seen; here you stand! Why do you not respond to me, having hidden your true self (ātman) with bushes?
नृशंसं बत राजेन्द्र यन्मामेवंगतामिह ।
विलपन्तीं समालिङ्ग्य नाश्वासयसि पार्थिव ॥९॥
9. nṛśaṁsaṁ bata rājendra yanmāmevaṁgatāmiha ,
vilapantīṁ samāliṅgya nāśvāsayasi pārthiva.
9. nṛśaṃsam bata rājendra yat mām evaṃgatām iha
vilapantīm samāliṅgya na āśvāsayasi pārthiva
9. Alas, O best of kings (rājendra), how cruel it is that you do not console me, who am lamenting here and in such a state, even after embracing me, O king (pārthiva)!
न शोचाम्यहमात्मानं न चान्यदपि किंचन ।
कथं नु भवितास्येक इति त्वां नृप शोचिमि ॥१०॥
10. na śocāmyahamātmānaṁ na cānyadapi kiṁcana ,
kathaṁ nu bhavitāsyeka iti tvāṁ nṛpa śocimi.
10. na śocāmi aham ātmānam na ca anyat api kiṃcana
katham nu bhavitā asi ekaḥ iti tvām nṛpa śocimi
10. I do not grieve for myself (ātman), nor for anything else. O king (nṛpa), I lament for you (tvām) with the thought, 'How will you manage to be alone?'
कथं नु राजंस्तृषितः क्षुधितः श्रमकर्शितः ।
सायाह्ने वृक्षमूलेषु मामपश्यन्भविष्यसि ॥११॥
11. kathaṁ nu rājaṁstṛṣitaḥ kṣudhitaḥ śramakarśitaḥ ,
sāyāhne vṛkṣamūleṣu māmapaśyanbhaviṣyasi.
11. katham nu rājan tṛṣitaḥ kṣudhitaḥ śramakarśitaḥ
sāyāhne vṛkṣamūleṣu mām apaśyan bhaviṣyasi
11. O king, how will you be in the evening, thirsty, hungry, and worn out by toil, under the trees, without seeing me?
ततः सा तीव्रशोकार्ता प्रदीप्तेव च मन्युना ।
इतश्चेतश्च रुदती पर्यधावत दुःखिता ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ sā tīvraśokārtā pradīpteva ca manyunā ,
itaścetaśca rudatī paryadhāvata duḥkhitā.
12. tataḥ sā tīvraśokārtā pradīptā iva ca manyunā
itaḥ cetaḥ ca rudatī paryadhāvata duḥkhitā
12. Then she, afflicted by intense sorrow, and as if burning with rage (manyu), distressed and weeping, ran hither and thither.
मुहुरुत्पतते बाला मुहुः पतति विह्वला ।
मुहुरालीयते भीता मुहुः क्रोशति रोदिति ॥१३॥
13. muhurutpatate bālā muhuḥ patati vihvalā ,
muhurālīyate bhītā muhuḥ krośati roditi.
13. muhuḥ utpatate bālā muhuḥ patati vihvalā
muhuḥ ālīyate bhītā muhuḥ krośati roditi
13. Repeatedly the young woman rises, then, bewildered, she repeatedly falls. Repeatedly, frightened, she hides, and repeatedly she cries out and weeps.
सा तीव्रशोकसंतप्ता मुहुर्निःश्वस्य विह्वला ।
उवाच भैमी निष्क्रम्य रोदमाना पतिव्रता ॥१४॥
14. sā tīvraśokasaṁtaptā muhurniḥśvasya vihvalā ,
uvāca bhaimī niṣkramya rodamānā pativratā.
14. sā tīvraśokasaṃtaptā muhuḥ niḥśvasya vihvalā
uvāca bhaimī niṣkramya rodamānā pativratā
14. She, Bhīmī, the chaste wife (pativratā), greatly distressed by intense sorrow, bewildered, and repeatedly sighing, then stepping out, spoke while weeping.
यस्याभिशापाद्दुःखार्तो दुःखं विन्दति नैषधः ।
तस्य भूतस्य तद्दुःखाद्दुःखमभ्यधिकं भवेत् ॥१५॥
15. yasyābhiśāpādduḥkhārto duḥkhaṁ vindati naiṣadhaḥ ,
tasya bhūtasya tadduḥkhādduḥkhamabhyadhikaṁ bhavet.
15. yasya abhiśāpāt duḥkhārtaḥ duḥkham vindati naiṣadhaḥ
tasya bhūtasya tat duḥkhāt duḥkham abhyadhikam bhavet
15. The sorrow of that being, from whose curse the King of Niṣadha (Nala) is distressed and experiences suffering, would be even greater than Nala's own suffering.
अपापचेतसं पापो य एवं कृतवान्नलम् ।
तस्माद्दुःखतरं प्राप्य जीवत्वसुखजीविकाम् ॥१६॥
16. apāpacetasaṁ pāpo ya evaṁ kṛtavānnalam ,
tasmādduḥkhataraṁ prāpya jīvatvasukhajīvikām.
16. apāpacetasam pāpaḥ yaḥ evam kṛtavān nalam
tasmāt duḥkhataram prāpya jīvatu asukhajīvikām
16. May that wicked person who thus harmed the innocent-minded Nala, experiencing greater suffering than Nala, live a joyless life.
एवं तु विलपन्ती सा राज्ञो भार्या महात्मनः ।
अन्वेषति स्म भर्तारं वने श्वापदसेविते ॥१७॥
17. evaṁ tu vilapantī sā rājño bhāryā mahātmanaḥ ,
anveṣati sma bhartāraṁ vane śvāpadasevite.
17. evam tu vilapantī sā rājñaḥ bhāryā mahātmanaḥ
anveṣati sma bhartāram vane śvāpadasevite
17. Thus lamenting, she, the wife of the noble (mahātman) king, searched for her husband in the forest frequented by wild animals.
उन्मत्तवद्भीमसुता विलपन्ती ततस्ततः ।
हा हा राजन्निति मुहुरितश्चेतश्च धावति ॥१८॥
18. unmattavadbhīmasutā vilapantī tatastataḥ ,
hā hā rājanniti muhuritaścetaśca dhāvati.
18. unmattavat bhīmasutā vilapantī tataḥ tataḥ hā
hā rājan iti muhuḥ itaḥ ca cetaḥ ca dhāvati
18. The daughter of Bhīma (Damayantī), lamenting like a madwoman, ran hither and thither from place to place, repeatedly crying, 'Alas, alas, O King!'
तां शुष्यमाणामत्यर्थं कुररीमिव वाशतीम् ।
करुणं बहु शोचन्तीं विलपन्तीं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१९॥
19. tāṁ śuṣyamāṇāmatyarthaṁ kurarīmiva vāśatīm ,
karuṇaṁ bahu śocantīṁ vilapantīṁ muhurmuhuḥ.
19. tām śuṣyamāṇām atyartham kurarīm iva vāśatīm
karuṇam bahu śocantīm vilapantīm muhurmuhuḥ
19. Her, greatly withered, crying out like a female osprey, lamenting much and mournfully, and weeping again and again.
सहसाभ्यागतां भैमीमभ्याशपरिवर्तिनीम् ।
जग्राहाजगरो ग्राहो महाकायः क्षुधान्वितः ॥२०॥
20. sahasābhyāgatāṁ bhaimīmabhyāśaparivartinīm ,
jagrāhājagaro grāho mahākāyaḥ kṣudhānvitaḥ.
20. sahasā abhyāgatām bhaimīm abhyāśaparivartinīm
jagrāha ajagaraḥ grāhaḥ mahākāyaḥ kṣudhānvitah
20. Suddenly, a huge-bodied, hunger-stricken python (ajagara), a seizing creature (grāha), seized Damayantī (bhaimī), who had recently approached and was moving about nearby.
सा ग्रस्यमाना ग्राहेण शोकेन च पराजिता ।
नात्मानं शोचति तथा यथा शोचति नैषधम् ॥२१॥
21. sā grasyamānā grāheṇa śokena ca parājitā ,
nātmānaṁ śocati tathā yathā śocati naiṣadham.
21. sā grasyamānā grāheṇa śokena ca parājitā na
ātmānam śocati tathā yathā śocati naiṣadham
21. She, being seized by the seizing creature (grāha) and overcome by grief, did not lament for herself (ātman) as much as she lamented for Nala (naiṣadha).
हा नाथ मामिह वने ग्रस्यमानामनाथवत् ।
ग्राहेणानेन विपिने किमर्थं नाभिधावसि ॥२२॥
22. hā nātha māmiha vane grasyamānāmanāthavat ,
grāheṇānena vipine kimarthaṁ nābhidhāvasi.
22. hā nātha mām iha vane grasyamānām anāthavat
grāheṇa anena vipine kimartham na abhidhāvasi
22. Alas, my lord! Why do you not rush to me, here in this forest (vana), being swallowed by this seizing creature (grāha) in this dense wilderness (vipina), helpless like one without a protector?
कथं भविष्यसि पुनर्मामनुस्मृत्य नैषध ।
पापान्मुक्तः पुनर्लब्ध्वा बुद्धिं चेतो धनानि च ॥२३॥
23. kathaṁ bhaviṣyasi punarmāmanusmṛtya naiṣadha ,
pāpānmuktaḥ punarlabdhvā buddhiṁ ceto dhanāni ca.
23. kathaṃ bhaviṣyasi punaḥ mām anusmṛtya naiṣadha |
pāpān muktaḥ punaḥ labdhvā buddhiṃ cetaḥ dhanāni ca
23. O Naisadha, how will you again become freed from sins after remembering me, and having regained your intelligence, consciousness, and wealth?
श्रान्तस्य ते क्षुधार्तस्य परिग्लानस्य नैषध ।
कः श्रमं राजशार्दूल नाशयिष्यति मानद ॥२४॥
24. śrāntasya te kṣudhārtasya pariglānasya naiṣadha ,
kaḥ śramaṁ rājaśārdūla nāśayiṣyati mānada.
24. śrāntasya te kṣudhārtasya pariglānasya naiṣadha
| kaḥ śramaṃ rājaśārdūla nāśayiṣyati mānada
24. O Naisadha, O tiger among kings, O giver of honor, who will remove the weariness, hunger, and exhaustion from you?
तामकस्मान्मृगव्याधो विचरन्गहने वने ।
आक्रन्दतीमुपश्रुत्य जवेनाभिससार ह ॥२५॥
25. tāmakasmānmṛgavyādho vicarangahane vane ,
ākrandatīmupaśrutya javenābhisasāra ha.
25. tām akasmāt mṛgavyādhaḥ vicaran gahane vane
| ākrandatīm upaśrutya javena abhisasāra ha
25. Wandering in the dense forest, a hunter suddenly heard her crying aloud and swiftly approached her.
तां स दृष्ट्वा तथा ग्रस्तामुरगेणायतेक्षणाम् ।
त्वरमाणो मृगव्याधः समभिक्रम्य वेगितः ॥२६॥
26. tāṁ sa dṛṣṭvā tathā grastāmurageṇāyatekṣaṇām ,
tvaramāṇo mṛgavyādhaḥ samabhikramya vegitaḥ.
26. tām sa dṛṣṭvā tathā grastām urageṇa āyatekṣaṇām
| tvaramāṇaḥ mṛgavyādhaḥ samabhikramya vegitaḥ
26. Having seen her, the long-eyed woman, thus seized by a serpent, that swift and hastening hunter approached.
मुखतः पातयामास शस्त्रेण निशितेन ह ।
निर्विचेष्टं भुजंगं तं विशस्य मृगजीवनः ॥२७॥
27. mukhataḥ pātayāmāsa śastreṇa niśitena ha ,
nirviceṣṭaṁ bhujaṁgaṁ taṁ viśasya mṛgajīvanaḥ.
27. mukhatas pātayāmāsa śastreṇa niśitena ha
nirviceṣṭam bhujaṅgam tam viśasya mṛgajīvanaḥ
27. The hunter, having killed that motionless snake, indeed struck it down with a sharp weapon, aiming at its mouth.
मोक्षयित्वा च तां व्याधः प्रक्षाल्य सलिलेन च ।
समाश्वास्य कृताहारामथ पप्रच्छ भारत ॥२८॥
28. mokṣayitvā ca tāṁ vyādhaḥ prakṣālya salilena ca ,
samāśvāsya kṛtāhārāmatha papraccha bhārata.
28. mokṣayitvā ca tām vyādhaḥ prakṣālya salilena
ca samāśvāsya kṛtāhārām atha papraccha bhārata
28. And then, O Bhārata, the hunter, having released her and washed her with water, and having comforted her after she had taken food, asked her.
कस्य त्वं मृगशावाक्षि कथं चाभ्यागता वनम् ।
कथं चेदं महत्कृच्छ्रं प्राप्तवत्यसि भामिनि ॥२९॥
29. kasya tvaṁ mṛgaśāvākṣi kathaṁ cābhyāgatā vanam ,
kathaṁ cedaṁ mahatkṛcchraṁ prāptavatyasi bhāmini.
29. kasya tvam mṛgaśāvākṣi katham ca abhyāgatā vanam
katham ca idam mahat kṛcchram prāptavaty asi bhāmini
29. O deer-eyed one, whose are you, and how did you come to the forest? And, O beautiful woman, how have you met with this great difficulty?
दमयन्ती तथा तेन पृच्छ्यमाना विशां पते ।
सर्वमेतद्यथावृत्तमाचचक्षेऽस्य भारत ॥३०॥
30. damayantī tathā tena pṛcchyamānā viśāṁ pate ,
sarvametadyathāvṛttamācacakṣe'sya bhārata.
30. damayantī tathā tena pṛcchyamānā viśām pate
sarvam etat yathāvṛttam ācacaksṣe asya bhārata
30. O lord of people, O Bhārata, Damayantī, being thus questioned by him, recounted to him everything exactly as it had transpired.
तामर्धवस्त्रसंवीतां पीनश्रोणिपयोधराम् ।
सुकुमारानवद्याङ्गीं पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् ॥३१॥
31. tāmardhavastrasaṁvītāṁ pīnaśroṇipayodharām ,
sukumārānavadyāṅgīṁ pūrṇacandranibhānanām.
31. tām ardhavastrasaṃvītām pīnaśroṇipayodharām
sukumāranavadyāṅgīm pūrṇacandranibhānanām
31. He saw her, half-covered by a garment, with plump hips and breasts, delicate and flawless limbs, and a face like the full moon.
अरालपक्ष्मनयनां तथा मधुरभाषिणीम् ।
लक्षयित्वा मृगव्याधः कामस्य वशमेयिवान् ॥३२॥
32. arālapakṣmanayanāṁ tathā madhurabhāṣiṇīm ,
lakṣayitvā mṛgavyādhaḥ kāmasya vaśameyivān.
32. arālpakṣmanayanām tathā madhurabhāṣiṇīm
lakṣayitvā mṛgavyādhaḥ kāmasya vaśam eyivān
32. Upon seeing her, with eyes having curved lashes and speaking sweetly, the hunter fell under the sway of desire (kāma).
तामथ श्लक्ष्णया वाचा लुब्धको मृदुपूर्वया ।
सान्त्वयामास कामार्तस्तदबुध्यत भामिनी ॥३३॥
33. tāmatha ślakṣṇayā vācā lubdhako mṛdupūrvayā ,
sāntvayāmāsa kāmārtastadabudhyata bhāminī.
33. tām atha ślakṣṇayā vācā lubdhakaḥ mṛdupūrvayā
sāntvayāmāsa kāmārtaḥ tat abudhyata bhāminī
33. Then the hunter, afflicted by desire (kāma), consoled her with soft and gentle words. The lady (Damayantī) understood his intentions.
दमयन्ती तु तं दुष्टमुपलभ्य पतिव्रता ।
तीव्ररोषसमाविष्टा प्रजज्वालेव मन्युना ॥३४॥
34. damayantī tu taṁ duṣṭamupalabhya pativratā ,
tīvraroṣasamāviṣṭā prajajvāleva manyunā.
34. damayantī tu tam duṣṭam upalabhya pativratā
tīvraroṣasamāviṣṭā prajajvāla iva manyunā
34. But Damayantī, the chaste wife (pativratā), upon realizing his wickedness, became filled with intense anger and blazed up as if with fury.
स तु पापमतिः क्षुद्रः प्रधर्षयितुमातुरः ।
दुर्धर्षां तर्कयामास दीप्तामग्निशिखामिव ॥३५॥
35. sa tu pāpamatiḥ kṣudraḥ pradharṣayitumāturaḥ ,
durdharṣāṁ tarkayāmāsa dīptāmagniśikhāmiva.
35. saḥ tu pāpamatiḥ kṣudraḥ pradharṣayitum āturaḥ
durdharṣām tarkayāmāsa dīptām agniśikhām iva
35. However, that evil-minded and contemptible man, eager to violate her, regarded her as unassailable, like a blazing flame of fire.
दमयन्ती तु दुःखार्ता पतिराज्यविनाकृता ।
अतीतवाक्पथे काले शशापैनं रुषा किल ॥३६॥
36. damayantī tu duḥkhārtā patirājyavinākṛtā ,
atītavākpathe kāle śaśāpainaṁ ruṣā kila.
36. damayantī tu duḥkhārtā pati-rājya-vinākṛtā
atīta-vākpathe kāle śaśāpa enam ruṣā kila
36. However, Damayantī, tormented by sorrow and bereft of her husband and kingdom, at a time when all speech was past, indeed cursed him out of anger.
यथाहं नैषधादन्यं मनसापि न चिन्तये ।
तथायं पततां क्षुद्रः परासुर्मृगजीवनः ॥३७॥
37. yathāhaṁ naiṣadhādanyaṁ manasāpi na cintaye ,
tathāyaṁ patatāṁ kṣudraḥ parāsurmṛgajīvanaḥ.
37. yathā aham naiṣadhāt anyam manasā api na cintaye
tathā ayam patatām kṣudraḥ parāsuḥ mṛgajīvanaḥ
37. "Just as I do not contemplate anyone other than the King of Niṣadha, even with my mind (manas), so may this contemptible hunter fall lifeless."
उक्तमात्रे तु वचने तया स मृगजीवनः ।
व्यसुः पपात मेदिन्यामग्निदग्ध इव द्रुमः ॥३८॥
38. uktamātre tu vacane tayā sa mṛgajīvanaḥ ,
vyasuḥ papāta medinyāmagnidagdha iva drumaḥ.
38. uktamātre tu vacane tayā saḥ mṛgajīvanaḥ
vyasuḥ papāta medinyām agnidagdhaḥ iva drumaḥ
38. But as soon as those words were spoken by her, that hunter fell lifeless to the ground, just like a tree consumed by fire.
