वैशंपायन उवाच ।
भूय एव ब्राह्मणमहाभाग्यं वक्तुमर्हसीत्यब्रवीत्पाण्डवेयो मार्कण्डेयम् ॥१॥

bhūya eva brāhmaṇamahābhāgyaṁ vaktumarhasītyabravītpāṇḍaveyo mārkaṇḍeyam.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: The son of Pāṇḍu (Yudhiṣṭhira) said to Mārkaṇḍeya, "You should indeed speak again about the great glory of the Brahmins."

2. Then Mārkaṇḍeya narrated.
अयोध्यायामिक्ष्वाकुकुलोत्पन्नः

pārthivaḥ parikṣinnāma mṛgayāmagamat.

3. In Ayodhyā, a king named Parikṣit, who was born in the Ikṣvāku family, went hunting.
तमेकाश्वेन मृगमनुसरन्तं
मृगो दूरमपाहरत् ॥४॥
4. tamekāśvena mṛgamanusarantaṁ
mṛgo dūramapāharat.

mṛgaḥ dūram apāharat
4. As he followed a deer on a single horse, the deer led him far away.
अथाध्वनि जातश्रमः क्षुत्तृष्णाभिभूतश्च कस्मिंश्चिदुद्देशे नीलं वनषण्डमपश्यत् ।
तच्च विवेश ॥५॥
5. athādhvani jātaśramaḥ kṣuttṛṣṇābhibhūtaśca kasmiṁściduddeśe nīlaṁ vanaṣaṇḍamapaśyat ,
tacca viveśa.

cit uddeśe nīlam vanaṣaṇḍam apaśyat tat ca viveśa
5. Then, exhausted from his journey and overcome by hunger and thirst, he spotted a dark grove in a certain area. And he entered it.
ततस्तस्य वनषण्डस्य मध्येऽतीव रमणीयं
सरो दृष्ट्वा साश्व एव व्यगाहत ॥६॥
6. tatastasya vanaṣaṇḍasya madhye'tīva
ramaṇīyaṁ saro dṛṣṭvā sāśva eva vyagāhata.
6. tataḥ tasya vanaṣaṇḍasya madhye atīva
ramaṇīyam saraḥ dṛṣṭvā sāśvaḥ eva vyagāhata
6. Then, having seen a very beautiful lake in the middle of that grove, he plunged into it along with his horse.
अथाश्वस्तः स बिसमृणालमश्वस्याग्रे
निक्षिप्य पुष्करिणीतीरे समाविशत् ॥७॥
7. athāśvastaḥ sa bisamṛṇālamaśvasyāgre
nikṣipya puṣkariṇītīre samāviśat.

agre nikṣipya puṣkariṇītīre samāviśat
7. Then, having refreshed himself, he placed a lotus stalk before his horse and sat down on the bank of the lotus pond.
ततः शयानो मधुरं
गीतशब्दमशृणोत् ॥८॥
8. tataḥ śayāno madhuraṁ
gītaśabdamaśṛṇot.

8. Then, as he lay there, he heard a sweet song.
स श्रुत्वाचिन्तयत् ।
नेह मनुष्यगतिं पश्यामि ।
कस्य खल्वयं गीतशब्द इति ॥९॥
9. sa śrutvācintayat ,
neha manuṣyagatiṁ paśyāmi ,
kasya khalvayaṁ gītaśabda iti.
9. sa śrutvā acintayat na iha manuṣyagatim
paśyāmi kasya khalu ayam gītaśabdaḥ iti
9. Hearing this, he thought, 'I see no human presence here. Whose song (gīta) is this, indeed?'
अथापश्यत्कन्यां परमरूपदर्शनीयां
पुष्पाण्यवचिन्वतीं गायन्तीं च ॥१०॥
10. athāpaśyatkanyāṁ paramarūpadarśanīyāṁ
puṣpāṇyavacinvatīṁ gāyantīṁ ca.
10. atha apaśyat kanyām paramarūpadarśanīyām
puṣpāṇi avacinvatīm gāyantīm ca
10. Then he saw a girl of surpassing beauty (parama-rūpa-darśanīyā) who was gathering flowers and singing.
अथ सा राज्ञः
समीपे पर्यक्रामत् ॥११॥

11. Then she walked around in the vicinity of the king.
तामब्रवीद्राजा ।
कस्यासि सुभगे त्वमिति ॥१२॥

asi subhage tvam iti
12. The king addressed her, saying, 'O beautiful (subhage) one, whose are you?'
सा प्रत्युवाच ।
कन्यास्मीति ॥१३॥
13. sā pratyuvāca ,
kanyāsmīti.

kanyā asmi iti
13. She replied, "I am a maiden."
तां राजोवाच ।
अर्थी त्वयाहमिति ॥१४॥
14. tāṁ rājovāca ,
arthī tvayāhamiti.

arthī tvayā aham iti
14. The king said to her, "I desire you."
अथोवाच कन्या ।
समयेनाहं शक्या त्वया लब्धुम् ।
नान्यथेति ॥१५॥
15. athovāca kanyā ,
samayenāhaṁ śakyā tvayā labdhum ,
nānyatheti.
15. atha uvāca kanyā samayena aham
śakyā tvayā labdhum na anyathā iti
15. Then the maiden said, "I can be obtained by you only through a condition, not otherwise."
तां राजा
समयमपृच्छत् ॥१६॥

16. The king asked her about the condition.
ततः कन्येदमुवाच ।
उदकं मे न दर्शयितव्यमिति ॥१७॥

udakaṁ me na darśayitavyamiti.
17. tataḥ kanyā idam uvāca udakam
me na darśayitavyam iti
17. Then the maiden said, "Water must not be shown to me."
स राजा बाढमित्युक्त्वा
तां समागम्य तया सहास्ते ॥१८॥
18. sa rājā bāḍhamityuktvā
tāṁ samāgamya tayā sahāste.
18. sa rājā bāḍham iti uktvā
tām samāgamya tayā saha āste
18. Having said, 'Yes,' the king approached her and stayed with her.
तत्रैवासीने राजनि सेनान्वगच्छत् ।
पदेनानुपदं दृष्ट्वा राजानं परिवार्यातिष्ठत् ॥१९॥
19. tatraivāsīne rājani senānvagacchat ,
padenānupadaṁ dṛṣṭvā rājānaṁ parivāryātiṣṭhat.
19. tatra eva āsīne rājani senā anvagacchat padena
anupadam dṛṣṭvā rājānam parivārya atiṣṭhat
19. While the king was sitting there, the army followed. Having spotted the king, they surrounded him, step by step, and stood [guard].
पर्याश्वस्तश्च राजा तयैव सह शिबिकया प्रायादविघाटितया ।
स्वनगरमनुप्राप्य रहसि तया सह रमन्नास्ते ।
नान्यत्किंचनापश्यत् ॥२०॥
20. paryāśvastaśca rājā tayaiva saha śibikayā prāyādavighāṭitayā ,
svanagaramanuprāpya rahasi tayā saha ramannāste ,
nānyatkiṁcanāpaśyat.
20. paryāśvastaḥ ca rājā tayā eva saha
śibikayā prāyāt avighāṭitayā
svanagaram anuprāpya rahasi tayā saha
raman āste na anyat kiñcana apaśyat
20. Reassured, the king departed with her in an undisturbed palanquin. Having reached his own city, he stayed there, delighting with her in seclusion. He saw nothing else at all.
अथ प्रधानामात्यस्तस्याभ्याशचराः स्त्रियोऽपृच्छत् ।
किमत्र प्रयोजनं वर्तत इति ॥२१॥
21. atha pradhānāmātyastasyābhyāśacarāḥ striyo'pṛcchat ,
kimatra prayojanaṁ vartata iti.
21. atha pradhānāmātyaḥ tasya abhyāśacarāḥ striyaḥ
apṛcchat kim atra prayojanaṃ vartate iti
21. Then the chief minister asked the women attending her, "What is the purpose of this place?"
अथाब्रुवंस्ताः स्त्रियः ।
अपूर्वमिव पश्याम उदकं नात्र नीयतेति ॥२२॥
22. athābruvaṁstāḥ striyaḥ ,
apūrvamiva paśyāma udakaṁ nātra nīyateti.
22. atha abruvan tāḥ striyaḥ apūrvam iva
paśyāma udakam na atra nīyate iti
22. Then those women said, "We see something unusual: water is not being brought here."
अथामात्योऽनुदकं वनं कारयित्वोदारवृक्षं बहुमूलपुष्पफलं रहस्युपगम्य राजानमब्रवीत् ।
वनमिदमुदारमनुदकम् ।
साध्वत्र रम्यतामिति ॥२३॥
23. athāmātyo'nudakaṁ vanaṁ kārayitvodāravṛkṣaṁ bahumūlapuṣpaphalaṁ rahasyupagamya rājānamabravīt ,
vanamidamudāramanudakam ,
sādhvatra ramyatāmiti.
23. atha amātyaḥ anudakam vanam kārayitvā
udāravṛkṣam bahumūlapuṣpapdalam rahasi
upagamya rājānam abravīt vanam idam
udāram anudakam sādhu atra ramyatām iti
23. Then the minister, having caused a waterless forest to be constructed - one with magnificent trees and abundant roots, flowers, and fruits - privately approached the king and said, "This forest is splendid and waterless. It is proper that you enjoy yourself here."
स तस्य वचनात्तयैव सह देव्या तद्वनं प्राविशत् ।
स कदाचित्तस्मिन्वने रम्ये तयैव सह व्यवहरत् ।
अथ क्षुत्तृष्णार्दितः श्रान्तोऽतिमात्रमतिमुक्तागारमपश्यत् ॥२४॥
24. sa tasya vacanāttayaiva saha devyā tadvanaṁ prāviśat ,
sa kadācittasminvane ramye tayaiva saha vyavaharat ,
atha kṣuttṛṣṇārditaḥ śrānto'timātramatimuktāgāramapaśyat.
24. sa tasya vacanāt tayā eva saha devyā tad
vanam prāviśat sa kadācit tasmin vane ramye
tayā eva saha vyavaharat atha kṣuttṛṣṇārditaḥ
śrāntaḥ atimātram atimuktāgāram apaśyat
24. According to his (minister's) advice, he entered that forest with the queen herself. Once, as he was engaged in enjoying himself with her in that beautiful forest, he became greatly distressed by hunger and thirst and, being weary, he then saw a magnificent bower of jasmine (atimukta flowers).
तत्प्रविश्य राजा सह प्रियया
सुधातलसुकृतां विमलसलिलपूर्णां वापीमपश्यत् ॥२५॥
25. tatpraviśya rājā saha priyayā sudhātalasukṛtāṁ
vimalasalilapūrṇāṁ vāpīmapaśyat.
25. tat praviśya rājā saha priyayā sudhātala-sukṛtām
vimala-salila-pūrṇām vāpīm apaśyat
25. Then, the king, along with his beloved, entered and saw a large step-well that was beautifully constructed with a cemented bottom and filled with clear water.
दृष्ट्वैव च तां तस्या एव तीरे
सहैव तया देव्या व्यतिष्ठत् ॥२६॥
26. dṛṣṭvaiva ca tāṁ tasyā eva tīre
sahaiva tayā devyā vyatiṣṭhat.
26. dṛṣṭvā eva ca tām tasyāḥ eva tīre
saha eva tayā devyā vyatiṣṭhat
26. And just upon seeing it (the step-well), he stood on its very bank, along with that queen.
अथ तां देवीं स राजाब्रवीत् ।
साध्ववतर वापीसलिलमिति ॥२७॥
27. atha tāṁ devīṁ sa rājābravīt ,
sādhvavatara vāpīsalilamiti.
27. atha tām devīm saḥ rājā abravīt
sādhu avatara vāpīsalilam iti
27. Then, that king said to the queen, 'Please, enter the water of the step-well.'
सा तद्वचः श्रुत्वावतीर्य वापीं न्यमज्जत् ।
न पुनरुदमज्जत् ॥२८॥
28. sā tadvacaḥ śrutvāvatīrya vāpīṁ nyamajjat ,
na punarudamajjat.
28. sā tadvacaḥ śrutvā avatīrya vāpīm
nyamajjat na punaḥ udamajjat
28. Hearing his words, she descended into the step-well and sank beneath the water, but she did not emerge again.
तां मृगयमाणो
राजा नापश्यत् ॥२९॥
29. tāṁ mṛgayamāṇo
rājā nāpaśyat.
29. tām mṛgayamāṇaḥ
rājā na apaśyat
29. The king, searching for her, did not find her.
वापीमपि निःस्राव्य मण्डूकं श्वभ्रमुखे दृष्ट्वा क्रुद्ध आज्ञापयामास ।
सर्वमण्डूकवधः क्रियतामिति ।
यो मयार्थी स मृतकैर्मण्डूकैरुपायनैर्मामुपतिष्ठेदिति ॥३०॥
30. vāpīmapi niḥsrāvya maṇḍūkaṁ śvabhramukhe dṛṣṭvā kruddha ājñāpayāmāsa ,
sarvamaṇḍūkavadhaḥ kriyatāmiti ,
yo mayārthī sa mṛtakairmaṇḍūkairupāyanairmāmupatiṣṭhediti.
30. vāpīm api niḥsrāvya maṇḍūkam śvabhramukhe
dṛṣṭvā kruddhaḥ ājñāpayāmāsa sarvamaṇḍūkavadhaḥ
kriyatām iti yaḥ mayā arthī saḥ mṛtakaiḥ
maṇḍūkaiḥ upāyanaiḥ mām upatiṣṭhet iti
30. Even after draining the pond, the king, upon seeing a frog at the mouth of the pit, became enraged and commanded, "Let all frogs be killed! Whoever desires a boon from me should approach me with dead frogs as offerings."
अथ मण्डूकवधे घोरे क्रियमाणे दिक्षु सर्वासु मण्डूकान्भयमाविशत् ।
ते भीता मण्डूकराज्ञे यथावृत्तं न्यवेदयन् ॥३१॥
31. atha maṇḍūkavadhe ghore kriyamāṇe dikṣu sarvāsu maṇḍūkānbhayamāviśat ,
te bhītā maṇḍūkarājñe yathāvṛttaṁ nyavedayan.
31. atha maṇḍūkavadhe ghore kriyamāṇe dikṣu sarvāsu maṇḍūkān
bhayam āviśat te bhītāḥ maṇḍūkarājñe yathāvṛttam nyavedayan
31. Then, as a terrible slaughter of frogs was being carried out in all directions, fear seized the frogs. Frightened, they reported what had happened to the king of frogs.
ततो मण्डूकराट्तापसवेषधारी
राजानमभ्यगच्छत् ॥३२॥
32. tato maṇḍūkarāṭtāpasaveṣadhārī
rājānamabhyagacchat.
32. tataḥ maṇḍūkarāṭ tāpasaveṣadhārī
rājānam abhyagacchat
32. Thereupon, the king of frogs, wearing the garb of an ascetic (tāpasa), approached the (human) king.
उपेत्य चैनमुवाच ।
मा राजन्क्रोधवशं गमः ।
प्रसादं कुरु ।
नार्हसि मण्डूकानामनपराधिनां वधं कर्तुमिति ॥३३॥
33. upetya cainamuvāca ,
mā rājankrodhavaśaṁ gamaḥ ,
prasādaṁ kuru ,
nārhasi maṇḍūkānāmanaparādhināṁ vadhaṁ kartumiti.
33. upetya ca enam uvāca mā rājan krodhavaśam gamaḥ prasādam
kuru na arhasi maṇḍūkānām anaparādhinām vadham kartum iti
33. And having approached him, [the frog king] said, "O King, do not succumb to the power of anger. Show mercy; you should not kill these innocent frogs."

34. And regarding this, there are two verses.
प्रतिजानीहि नैतांस्त्वं प्राप्य क्रोधं विमोक्ष्यसे ।
अलं कृत्वा तवाधर्मं मण्डूकैः किं हतैर्हि ते ॥३५॥
35. pratijānīhi naitāṁstvaṁ prāpya krodhaṁ vimokṣyase ,
alaṁ kṛtvā tavādharmaṁ maṇḍūkaiḥ kiṁ hatairhi te.
35. pratijānīhi na etān tvam prāpya krodham vimokṣyase
alam kṛtvā tava adharmam maṇḍūkaiḥ kim hataiḥ hi te
35. Promise that you will not kill these (frogs) even after you have become angry. Indeed, what good will it do you to kill the frogs, achieving nothing but a futile act of unrighteousness (adharma)?
तमेवंवादिनमिष्टजनशोकपरीतात्मा राजा प्रोवाच ।
न हि क्षम्यते तन्मया ।
हनिष्याम्येतान् ।
एतैर्दुरात्मभिः प्रिया मे भक्षिता ।
सर्वथैव मे वध्या मण्डूकाः ।
नार्हसि विद्वन्मामुपरोद्धुमिति ॥३६॥
36. tamevaṁvādinamiṣṭajanaśokaparītātmā rājā provāca ,
na hi kṣamyate tanmayā ,
haniṣyāmyetān ,
etairdurātmabhiḥ priyā me bhakṣitā ,
sarvathaiva me vadhyā maṇḍūkāḥ ,
nārhasi vidvanmāmuparoddhumiti.
36. tam evaṃvādīnam iṣṭajanaśokaparītātmā rājā provāca
na hi kṣamyate tat mayā haniṣyāmi etān etaiḥ
durātmabhiḥ priyā me bhakṣitā sarvathā eva me
vadhyāḥ maṇḍūkāḥ na arhasi vidvan mām uparoddhum iti
36. To him who spoke thus, the king, whose spirit (ātman) was overcome with sorrow for his beloved wife, replied: "Indeed, I cannot forgive that. I will kill these (frogs). My beloved one was devoured by these evil-minded (durātman) creatures. By all means, these frogs must be killed by me. O wise one, you should not try to stop me."
स तद्वाक्यमुपलभ्य व्यथितेन्द्रियमनाः प्रोवाच ।
प्रसीद राजन् ।
अहमायुर्नाम मण्डूकराजः ।
मम सा दुहिता सुशोभना नाम ।
तस्या दौःशील्यमेतत् ।
बहवो हि राजानस्तया विप्रलब्धपूर्वा इति ॥३७॥
37. sa tadvākyamupalabhya vyathitendriyamanāḥ provāca ,
prasīda rājan ,
ahamāyurnāma maṇḍūkarājaḥ ,
mama sā duhitā suśobhanā nāma ,
tasyā dauḥśīlyametat ,
bahavo hi rājānastayā vipralabdhapūrvā iti.
37. saḥ tat vākyam upalabhya vyathita indriya manāḥ
provāca prasīda rājan aham āyuḥ nāma maṇḍūkarājaḥ
mama sā duhitā suśobhanā nāma tasyāḥ dauḥśīlyam
etat bahavaḥ hi rājānaḥ tayā vipralabdha pūrvāḥ iti
37. Upon hearing that statement, with his senses and mind distressed, he said: 'Have mercy, O King! I am Āyu, the king of frogs. That daughter of mine is named Suśobhanā. This is her bad conduct (dauḥśīlya). Indeed, many kings have been deceived by her previously.'
तमब्रवीद्राजा ।
तयास्म्यर्थी ।
सा मे दीयतामिति ॥३८॥
38. tamabravīdrājā ,
tayāsmyarthī ,
sā me dīyatāmiti.
38. tam abravīt rājā tayā asmi
arthī sā me dīyatām iti
38. The king said to him, 'I desire her; let her be given to me.'
अथैनां राज्ञे पितादात् ।
अब्रवीच्चैनाम् ।
एनं राजानं शुश्रूषस्वेति ॥३९॥
39. athaināṁ rājñe pitādāt ,
abravīccainām ,
enaṁ rājānaṁ śuśrūṣasveti.
39. atha enām rājñe pitā adāt abravīt
ca enām enam rājānam śuśrūṣasva iti
39. Then her father gave her to the king and said to her, 'Serve this king.'
स उवाच दुहितरम् ।
यस्मात्त्वया राजानो विप्रलब्धास्तस्मादब्रह्मण्यानि तवापत्यानि भविष्यन्त्यनृतकत्वात्तवेति ॥४०॥
40. sa uvāca duhitaram ,
yasmāttvayā rājāno vipralabdhāstasmādabrahmaṇyāni tavāpatyāni bhaviṣyantyanṛtakatvāttaveti.
40. saḥ uvāca duhitaram yasmāt tvayā rājānaḥ vipralabdhāḥ tasmāt
abrahmaṇyāni tava apatyāni bhaviṣyanti anṛtakatvāt tava iti
40. He said to his daughter, 'Because you have deceived kings, therefore your offspring will be impious (abrahmaṇyāni) due to your untruthfulness (anṛtakatva).'
स च राजा तामुपलभ्य तस्यां सुरतगुणनिबद्धहृदयो लोकत्रयैश्वर्यमिवोपलभ्य हर्षबाष्पकलया वाचा प्रणिपत्याभिपूज्य मण्डूकराजानमब्रवीत् ।
अनुगृहीतोऽस्मीति ॥४१॥
41. sa ca rājā tāmupalabhya tasyāṁ surataguṇanibaddhahṛdayo lokatrayaiśvaryamivopalabhya harṣabāṣpakalayā vācā praṇipatyābhipūjya maṇḍūkarājānamabravīt ,
anugṛhīto'smīti.
41. sa ca rājā tām upalabhya tasyām surata-guṇa-nibaddha-hṛdayaḥ
loka-traya-aiśvaryam iva upalabhya
harṣa-bāṣpa-kalayā vācā praṇipatya abhipūjya
maṇḍūka-rājānam abravīt anugṛhītaḥ asmi iti
41. And that king, having obtained her, with his heart captivated by her qualities of pleasure, and feeling as if he had attained the dominion of the three worlds, spoke to the frog king with a voice indistinct with tears of joy, after bowing down and honoring him, saying, 'I am truly favored.'
स च मण्डूकराजो
जामातरमनुज्ञाप्य यथागतमगच्छत् ॥४२॥
42. sa ca maṇḍūkarājo jāmātaramanujñāpya
yathāgatamagacchat.
42. sa ca maṇḍūka-rājaḥ jāmātaram
anujñāpya yathā-āgatam agacchat
42. And that frog king, having dismissed his son-in-law, departed the way he had come.
अथ कस्यचित्कालस्य तस्यां कुमारास्त्रयस्तस्य राज्ञः संबभूवुः शलो दलो बलश्चेति ।
ततस्तेषां ज्येष्ठं शलं समये पिता राज्येऽभिषिच्य तपसि धृतात्मा वनं जगाम ॥४३॥
43. atha kasyacitkālasya tasyāṁ kumārāstrayastasya rājñaḥ saṁbabhūvuḥ śalo dalo balaśceti ,
tatasteṣāṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ śalaṁ samaye pitā rājye'bhiṣicya tapasi dhṛtātmā vanaṁ jagāma.
43. atha kasyacit kālasya tasyām kumārāḥ trayaḥ
tasya rājñaḥ sambabhūvuḥ śalaḥ dalaḥ balaḥ ca
iti | tataḥ teṣām jyeṣṭham śalam samaye pitā
rājye abhiṣicya tapasi dhṛta-ātmā vanam jagāma
43. Then, after some time, three princes named Shala, Dala, and Bala were born to that king from her. Thereafter, their father, at the appropriate time, consecrated the eldest, Shala, to the kingship. With his mind fixed on spiritual austerity (tapas), he departed for the forest.
अथ कदाचिच्छलो मृगयामचरत् ।
मृगं चासाद्य रथेनान्वधावत् ॥४४॥
44. atha kadācicchalo mṛgayāmacarat ,
mṛgaṁ cāsādya rathenānvadhāvat.
44. atha kadācit śalaḥ mṛgayām acarat |
mṛgam ca āsādya rathena anvadhāvat
44. Then, one day, Shala went on a hunt. And having caught up with a deer, he pursued it with his chariot.
सूतं चोवाच ।
शीघ्रं मां वहस्वेति ॥४५॥
45. sūtaṁ covāca ,
śīghraṁ māṁ vahasveti.
45. sūtam ca uvāca śīghram
mām vahasva iti
45. And he spoke to the charioteer, "Drive me swiftly!"
स तथोक्तः सूतो राजानमब्रवीत् ।
मा क्रियतामनुबन्धः ।
नैष शक्यस्त्वया मृगो ग्रहीतुं यद्यपि ते रथे युक्तौ वाम्यौ स्यातामिति ॥४६॥
46. sa tathoktaḥ sūto rājānamabravīt ,
mā kriyatāmanubandhaḥ ,
naiṣa śakyastvayā mṛgo grahītuṁ yadyapi te rathe yuktau vāmyau syātāmiti.
46. sa tathā uktaḥ sūtaḥ rājānam abravīt
mā kriyatām anubandhaḥ na eṣa
śakyaḥ tvayā mṛgaḥ grahītum yadi api
te rathe yuktau vāmyau syātām iti
46. The charioteer, thus spoken to, said to the king, "Do not persist. This deer cannot be caught by you, even if the two horses named Vāmya (vāmyau) were yoked to your chariot."
ततोऽब्रवीद्राजा सूतम् ।
आचक्ष्व मे वाम्यौ ।
हन्मि वा त्वामिति ॥४७॥
47. tato'bravīdrājā sūtam ,
ācakṣva me vāmyau ,
hanmi vā tvāmiti.
47. tataḥ abravīt rājā sūtam ācakṣva
me vāmyau hanmi vā tvām iti
47. Then the king said to the charioteer, "Explain the two Vāmya horses (vāmyau) to me, or I will kill you!"
स एवमुक्तो राजभयभीतो वामदेवशापभीतश्च सन्नाचख्यौ राज्ञे ।
वामदेवस्याश्वौ वाम्यौ मनोजवाविति ॥४८॥
48. sa evamukto rājabhayabhīto vāmadevaśāpabhītaśca sannācakhyau rājñe ,
vāmadevasyāśvau vāmyau manojavāviti.
48. sa evam uktaḥ rājabhayabhītaḥ vāmadevaśāpabhītaḥ ca san
ācakhyau rājñe vāmadevasya aśvau vāmyau manojavau iti
48. Having been thus spoken to, and being afraid of the king and afraid of Vāmadeva's curse, he then narrated to the king: "The two horses of Vāmadeva (vāmyau) are as swift as thought (manojavau)."
अथैनमेवं ब्रुवाणमब्रवीद्राजा ।
वामदेवाश्रमं याहीति ॥४९॥
49. athainamevaṁ bruvāṇamabravīdrājā ,
vāmadevāśramaṁ yāhīti.
49. atha enam evam bruvāṇam abravīt
rājā vāmadeva āśramam yāhi iti
49. Then the king said to him, as he was speaking thus, "Go to Vāmadeva's hermitage."
स गत्वा वामदेवाश्रमं तमृषिमब्रवीत् ।
भगवन्मृगो मया विद्धः पलायते ।
तं संभावयेयम् ।
अर्हसि मे वाम्यौ दातुमिति ॥५०॥
50. sa gatvā vāmadevāśramaṁ tamṛṣimabravīt ,
bhagavanmṛgo mayā viddhaḥ palāyate ,
taṁ saṁbhāvayeyam ,
arhasi me vāmyau dātumiti.
50. saḥ gatvā vāmadeva āśramam tam
ṛṣim abravīt bhagavan mṛgaḥ mayā
viddhaḥ palāyate tam saṃbhāvayeyam
arhasi me vāmyau dātum iti
50. Having gone to Vāmadeva's hermitage, he said to that sage, "O venerable one, a deer wounded by me is fleeing. I wish to retrieve it. You should give me two Vāmī horses."
तमब्रवीदृषिः ।
ददानि ते वाम्यौ ।
कृतकार्येण भवता ममैव निर्यात्यौ क्षिप्रमिति ॥५१॥
51. tamabravīdṛṣiḥ ,
dadāni te vāmyau ,
kṛtakāryeṇa bhavatā mamaiva niryātyau kṣipramiti.
51. tam abravīt ṛṣiḥ dadāni te vāmyau kṛta
kāryeṇa bhavatā mama eva niryātyau kṣipram iti
51. The sage said to him, "I will give you two Vāmī horses. They are to be returned quickly to me alone by you once your task is accomplished."
स च तावश्वौ प्रतिगृह्यानुज्ञाप्य चर्षिं प्रायाद्वाम्यसंयुक्तेन रथेन मृगं प्रति ।
गच्छंश्चाब्रवीत्सूतम् ।
अश्वरत्नाविमावयोग्यौ ब्राह्मणानाम् ।
नैतौ प्रतिदेयौ वामदेवायेति ॥५२॥
52. sa ca tāvaśvau pratigṛhyānujñāpya carṣiṁ prāyādvāmyasaṁyuktena rathena mṛgaṁ prati ,
gacchaṁścābravītsūtam ,
aśvaratnāvimāvayogyau brāhmaṇānām ,
naitau pratideyau vāmadevāyeti.
52. saḥ ca tau aśvau pratigṛhya anujñāpya ca ṛṣim
prāyāt vāmya saṃyuktena rathena mṛgam prati
gacchan ca abravīt sūtam aśva ratnau imau ayogyau
brāhmaṇānām na etau pratideyau vāmadevāya iti
52. And having received those two horses and taken leave of the sage, he departed in a chariot yoked with the Vāmī horses, heading towards the deer. As he went, he said to the charioteer, "These two excellent horses are unsuitable for brāhmaṇas. They should not be returned to Vāmadeva."
एवमुक्त्वा मृगमवाप्य
स्वनगरमेत्याश्वावन्तःपुरेऽस्थापयत् ॥५३॥
53. evamuktvā mṛgamavāpya
svanagarametyāśvāvantaḥpure'sthāpayat.

etya aśvāvāntaḥpure asthāpayat
53. Having thus spoken, and having obtained the deer, he came to his own city and placed it in the inner stable of the palace.
अथर्षिश्चिन्तयामास ।
तरुणो राजपुत्रः कल्याणं पत्रमासाद्य रमते ।
न मे प्रतिनिर्यातयति ।
अहो कष्टमिति ॥५४॥
54. atharṣiścintayāmāsa ,
taruṇo rājaputraḥ kalyāṇaṁ patramāsādya ramate ,
na me pratiniryātayati ,
aho kaṣṭamiti.
54. atha ṛṣiḥ cintayāmāsa taruṇaḥ rājaputraḥ kalyāṇam patram
āsādya ramate na me pratiniryātayati aho kaṣṭam iti
54. Then the sage thought: 'The young prince is enjoying the auspicious prize he obtained. He does not return it to me. Oh, what a trouble!'
मनसा निश्चित्य मासि पूर्णे शिष्यमब्रवीत् ।
गच्छात्रेय ।
राजानं ब्रूहि ।
यदि पर्याप्तं निर्यातयोपाध्यायवाम्याविति ॥५५॥
55. manasā niścitya māsi pūrṇe śiṣyamabravīt ,
gacchātreya ,
rājānaṁ brūhi ,
yadi paryāptaṁ niryātayopādhyāyavāmyāviti.
55. manasā niścitya māsi pūrṇe śiṣyam abravīt gaccha ātreya
rājānam brūhi yadi paryāptam niryātaya upādhyāyavāmyau iti
55. Having thus decided mentally, when a month was complete, he said to his disciple: 'Go, Ātreya, tell the king: "If it is sufficient, return the two valuable objects for the preceptor."'
स गत्वैवं तं
राजानमब्रवीत् ॥५६॥
56. sa gatvaivaṁ taṁ
rājānamabravīt.

rājānam abravīt
56. Having gone, he thus spoke to that king.
तं राजा प्रत्युवाच ।
राज्ञामेतद्वाहनम् ।
अनर्हा ब्राह्मणा रत्नानामेवंविधानाम् ।
किं च ब्राह्मणानामश्वैः कार्यम् ।
साधु प्रतिगम्यतामिति ॥५७॥
57. taṁ rājā pratyuvāca ,
rājñāmetadvāhanam ,
anarhā brāhmaṇā ratnānāmevaṁvidhānām ,
kiṁ ca brāhmaṇānāmaśvaiḥ kāryam ,
sādhu pratigamyatāmiti.

vāhanam | anarhāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ ratnānām
evaṃvidhānām | kim ca brāhmaṇānām
aśvaiḥ kāryam | sādhu pratigamyatām iti
57. The king replied to him, "This is a conveyance for kings. Brahmins are not worthy of such valuable possessions. Moreover, what business do Brahmins have with horses? Please return now."

गत्वैवमुपाध्यायायाचष्ट ॥५८॥

58. Having gone, he thus reported to the teacher.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनमप्रियं वामदेवः क्रोधपरीतात्मा स्वयमेव राजानमभिगम्याश्वार्थमभ्यचोदयत् ।
न चादाद्राजा ॥५९॥
59. tacchrutvā vacanamapriyaṁ vāmadevaḥ krodhaparītātmā svayameva rājānamabhigamyāśvārthamabhyacodayat ,
na cādādrājā.
59. tat śrutvā vacanam apriyam
vāmadevaḥ krodhaparītātmā svayam
eva rājānam abhigamya aśvārtham
abhyacodayat | na ca adāt rājā
59. Having heard that unpleasant statement, Vāmadeva, his soul enveloped in anger, himself approached the king and urged him concerning the horses. But the king did not give them.
वामदेव उवाच ।
प्रयच्छ वाम्यौ मम पार्थिव त्वं कृतं हि ते कार्यमन्यैरशक्यम् ।
मा त्वा वधीद्वरुणो घोरपाशैर्ब्रह्मक्षत्रस्यान्तरे वर्तमानः ॥६०॥
60. vāmadeva uvāca ,
prayaccha vāmyau mama pārthiva tvaṁ; kṛtaṁ hi te kāryamanyairaśakyam ,
mā tvā vadhīdvaruṇo ghorapāśai;rbrahmakṣatrasyāntare vartamānaḥ.
60. vāmadevaḥ uvāca | prayaccha vāmyau mama
pārthiva tvam kṛtam hi te kāryam anyaiḥ
aśakyam | mā tvā vadhīt varuṇaḥ
ghorapāśaiḥ brahmakṣatrasya antare vartamānaḥ
60. Vāmadeva said, "O King, you must give me the two horses. Indeed, this is your duty (kārya), which others cannot fulfill. May Varuṇa, who resides between the Brahmin (brahman) and Kṣatriya (kṣatra) powers, not bind you with dreadful nooses."
राजोवाच ।
अनड्वाहौ सुव्रतौ साधु दान्तावेतद्विप्राणां वाहनं वामदेव ।
ताभ्यां याहि त्वं यत्र कामो महर्षे छन्दांसि वै त्वादृशं संवहन्ति ॥६१॥
61. rājovāca ,
anaḍvāhau suvratau sādhu dāntā;vetadviprāṇāṁ vāhanaṁ vāmadeva ,
tābhyāṁ yāhi tvaṁ yatra kāmo maharṣe; chandāṁsi vai tvādṛśaṁ saṁvahanti.
61. rājan uvāca | anaḍvāhau suvratau sādhu
dāntau etat viprāṇām vāhanam vāmadeva
| tābhyām yāhi tvam yatra kāmaḥ
maharṣe chandāṃsi vai tvādṛśam saṃvahanti
61. The king said: "O Vāmadeva, these two oxen are well-behaved and docile; they are a suitable conveyance for brahmins. Go with them wherever you desire, great sage. Indeed, the Vedic hymns (chandāṃsi) themselves carry one like you."
वामदेव उवाच ।
छन्दांसि वै मादृशं संवहन्ति लोकेऽमुष्मिन्पार्थिव यानि सन्ति ।
अस्मिंस्तु लोके मम यानमेतदस्मद्विधानामपरेषां च राजन् ॥६२॥
62. vāmadeva uvāca ,
chandāṁsi vai mādṛśaṁ saṁvahanti; loke'muṣminpārthiva yāni santi ,
asmiṁstu loke mama yānameta;dasmadvidhānāmapareṣāṁ ca rājan.
62. vāmadeva uvāca | chandāṃsi vai mādṛśam
saṃvahanti loke amuṣmin pārthiva
yāni santi | asmin tu loke mama yānam
etat asmatvidhānām apareṣām ca rājan
62. Vāmadeva said: "Indeed, O king (pārthiva), the Vedic hymns (chandāṃsi) that exist in that world carry one like me. But in *this* world, this conveyance (yāna) is for me and for others like us, O King."
राजोवाच ।
चत्वारो वा गर्दभास्त्वां वहन्तु श्रेष्ठाश्वतर्यो हरयो वा तुरंगाः ।
तैस्त्वं याहि क्षत्रियस्यैष वाहो मम वाम्यौ न तवैतौ हि विद्धि ॥६३॥
63. rājovāca ,
catvāro vā gardabhāstvāṁ vahantu; śreṣṭhāśvataryo harayo vā turaṁgāḥ ,
taistvaṁ yāhi kṣatriyasyaiṣa vāho; mama vāmyau na tavaitau hi viddhi.
63. rājan uvāca | catvāraḥ vā gardabhāḥ tvām
vahantu śreṣṭhāḥ aśvataryaḥ harayaḥ vā
turaṅgāḥ | taiḥ tvam yāhi kṣatriyasya eṣaḥ
vāhaḥ mama vāmyau na tava etau hi viddhi
63. The King said: "Or let four donkeys carry you, or excellent mules, or even swift horses. These conveyances (vāha) are for a kṣatriya. Know that these two (oxen) are mine, not yours."
वामदेव उवाच ।
घोरं व्रतं ब्राह्मणस्यैतदाहुरेतद्राजन्यदिहाजीवमानः ।
अयस्मया घोररूपा महान्तो वहन्तु त्वां शितशूलाश्चतुर्धा ॥६४॥
64. vāmadeva uvāca ,
ghoraṁ vrataṁ brāhmaṇasyaitadāhu;retadrājanyadihājīvamānaḥ ,
ayasmayā ghorarūpā mahānto; vahantu tvāṁ śitaśūlāścaturdhā.
64. vāmadeva uvāca | ghoram vratam
brāhmaṇasya etat āhuḥ eṣaḥ rājan yat iha
ājīvamānaḥ | ayasmayāḥ ghorarūpāḥ
mahāntaḥ vahantu tvām śitaśūlāḥ caturdhā
64. Vāmadeva said: "They declare this to be a terrible vow (vrata) for a brahmin - this very sustenance (ājīvamānaḥ) here, O king. Let huge, terrifying, iron-made creatures, armed with sharp lances, carry you in four directions."
राजोवाच ।
ये त्वा विदुर्ब्राह्मणं वामदेव वाचा हन्तुं मनसा कर्मणा वा ।
ते त्वां सशिष्यमिह पातयन्तु मद्वाक्यनुन्नाः शितशूलासिहस्ताः ॥६५॥
65. rājovāca ,
ye tvā vidurbrāhmaṇaṁ vāmadeva; vācā hantuṁ manasā karmaṇā vā ,
te tvāṁ saśiṣyamiha pātayantu; madvākyanunnāḥ śitaśūlāsihastāḥ.
65. rājā uvāca | ye tvā viduḥ brāhmaṇam
vāmadeva vācā hantum manasā karmaṇā
vā | te tvām saśiṣyam iha
pātayantu matvākyanunnāḥ śitaśūlāsihastāḥ
65. The King said: "O Vāmadeva, may those who acknowledge you as a Brahmin, and those who would harm (others) by speech, thought, or action, be impelled by my words, and with sharp spears and swords in hand, cast you down here along with your disciples."
वामदेव उवाच ।
नानुयोगा ब्राह्मणानां भवन्ति वाचा राजन्मनसा कर्मणा वा ।
यस्त्वेवं ब्रह्म तपसान्वेति विद्वांस्तेन श्रेष्ठो भवति हि जीवमानः ॥६६॥
66. vāmadeva uvāca ,
nānuyogā brāhmaṇānāṁ bhavanti; vācā rājanmanasā karmaṇā vā ,
yastvevaṁ brahma tapasānveti vidvāṁ;stena śreṣṭho bhavati hi jīvamānaḥ.
66. vāmadeva uvāca | na anuyogāḥ brāhmaṇānām
bhavanti vācā rājan manasā karmaṇā
vā | yaḥ tu evam brahma tapasā anveti
vidvān tena śreṣṭhaḥ bhavati hi jīvamānaḥ
66. Vāmadeva said: "O King, Brahmins are not subject to interrogations or challenges, whether by speech, mind, or action. Indeed, one who, being wise, thus follows the supreme reality (brahman) through austerity (tapas), by that path he becomes superior while living."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमुक्ते वामदेवेन राजन्समुत्तस्थू राक्षसा घोररूपाः ।
तैः शूलहस्तैर्वध्यमानः स राजा प्रोवाचेदं वाक्यमुच्चैस्तदानीम् ॥६७॥
67. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evamukte vāmadevena rāja;nsamuttasthū rākṣasā ghorarūpāḥ ,
taiḥ śūlahastairvadhyamānaḥ sa rājā; provācedaṁ vākyamuccaistadānīm.
67. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca | evam ukte vāmadevena
rājan samuttasthuḥ rākṣasāḥ ghorarūpāḥ
| taiḥ śūlahastaiḥ vadhyamānaḥ sa
rājā provāca idam vākyam uccaiḥ tadānīm
67. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "When Vāmadeva had thus spoken, O King, fearsome-looking demons (rakṣasas) arose. While being assailed by those demons holding spears, that king then loudly uttered these words."
इक्ष्वाकवो यदि ब्रह्मन्दलो वा विधेया मे यदि वान्ये विशोऽपि ।
नोत्स्रक्ष्येऽहं वामदेवस्य वाम्यौ नैवंविधा धर्मशीला भवन्ति ॥६८॥
68. ikṣvākavo yadi brahmandalo vā; vidheyā me yadi vānye viśo'pi ,
notsrakṣye'haṁ vāmadevasya vāmyau; naivaṁvidhā dharmaśīlā bhavanti.
68. ikṣvākavaḥ yadi brahman dalaḥ vā
vidheyāḥ me yadi vā anye viśaḥ api |
na utsrakṣye aham vāmadevasya vāmyau
na evamvidhāḥ dharmaśīlāḥ bhavanti
68. (The King said:) "O Brahmin, if the Ikṣvākus, or my people, or even other subjects are subservient to me, then I shall not abandon Vāmadeva's two feet. People of such righteous character (dharma) do not act this way."
एवं ब्रुवन्नेव स यातुधानैर्हतो जगामाशु महीं क्षितीशः ।
ततो विदित्वा नृपतिं निपातितमिक्ष्वाकवो वै दलमभ्यषिञ्चन् ॥६९॥
69. evaṁ bruvanneva sa yātudhānai;rhato jagāmāśu mahīṁ kṣitīśaḥ ,
tato viditvā nṛpatiṁ nipātita;mikṣvākavo vai dalamabhyaṣiñcan.
69. evam bruvan eva saḥ yātudhānaiḥ
hataḥ jagāma āśu mahīm kṣitīśaḥ
tataḥ viditvā nṛpatim nipātitam
ikṣvākavaḥ vai dalam abhyaṣiñcan
69. The king, even as he spoke thus, was killed by the rākṣasas and quickly fell to the earth. Then, having learned that the king was slain, the Ikshvakus indeed crowned Dala.
राज्ये तदा तत्र गत्वा स विप्रः प्रोवाचेदं वचनं वामदेवः ।
दलं राजानं ब्राह्मणानां हि देयमेवं राजन्सर्वधर्मेषु दृष्टम् ॥७०॥
70. rājye tadā tatra gatvā sa vipraḥ; provācedaṁ vacanaṁ vāmadevaḥ ,
dalaṁ rājānaṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ hi deya;mevaṁ rājansarvadharmeṣu dṛṣṭam.
70. rājye tadā tatra gatvā saḥ vipraḥ
provāca idam vacanam vāmadevaḥ
dalam rājānam brāhmaṇānām hi
deyam evam rājan sarvadharmeṣu dṛṣṭam
70. Then, having gone there to the kingdom, that Brahmin Vāmadeva spoke this word: "O King, Dala indeed owes what is due to the Brahmins. This is established in all principles of natural law (dharma)."
बिभेषि चेत्त्वमधर्मान्नरेन्द्र प्रयच्छ मे शीघ्रमेवाद्य वाम्यौ ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वामदेवस्य वाक्यं स पार्थिवः सूतमुवाच रोषात् ॥७१॥
71. bibheṣi cettvamadharmānnarendra; prayaccha me śīghramevādya vāmyau ,
etacchrutvā vāmadevasya vākyaṁ; sa pārthivaḥ sūtamuvāca roṣāt.
71. bibheṣi cet tvam adharmāt narendra
prayaccha me śīghram eva adya
vāmyau etat śrutvā vāmadevasya vākyam
saḥ pārthivaḥ sūtam uvāca roṣāt
71. "If you fear unrighteousness (adharma), O king, then give me two mares quickly, right now!" Having heard this statement of Vāmadeva, that king, out of anger, spoke to his charioteer.
एकं हि मे सायकं चित्ररूपं दिग्धं विषेणाहर संगृहीतम् ।
येन विद्धो वामदेवः शयीत संदश्यमानः श्वभिरार्तरूपः ॥७२॥
72. ekaṁ hi me sāyakaṁ citrarūpaṁ; digdhaṁ viṣeṇāhara saṁgṛhītam ,
yena viddho vāmadevaḥ śayīta; saṁdaśyamānaḥ śvabhirārtarūpaḥ.
72. ekam hi me sāyakam citrarūpam
digdham viṣeṇa āhara saṁgṛhītam
yena viddhaḥ vāmadevaḥ śayīta
saṁdaśyamānaḥ śvabhiḥ ārtarūpaḥ
72. [Charioteer,] indeed, bring me that one wondrous arrow, prepared and smeared with poison. With it, Vāmadeva, pierced, will lie down, being bitten by dogs, presenting a pained appearance.
वामदेव उवाच ।
जानामि पुत्रं दशवर्षं तवाहं जातं महिष्यां श्येनजितं नरेन्द्र ।
तं जहि त्वं मद्वचनात्प्रणुन्नस्तूर्णं प्रियं सायकैर्घोररूपैः ॥७३॥
73. vāmadeva uvāca ,
jānāmi putraṁ daśavarṣaṁ tavāhaṁ; jātaṁ mahiṣyāṁ śyenajitaṁ narendra ,
taṁ jahi tvaṁ madvacanātpraṇunna;stūrṇaṁ priyaṁ sāyakairghorarūpaiḥ.
73. vāmadeva uvāca jānāmi putraṃ daśavarṣaṃ
tava aham jātaṃ mahiṣyāṃ śyenajitaṃ
narendra taṃ jahi tvaṃ mat vacanāt
praṇunnaḥ tūrṇaṃ priyaṃ sāyakaiḥ ghorarūpaiḥ
73. Vāmadeva said: 'O king, I know your ten-year-old son Śyenajit, born of the queen. You, impelled by my command, must quickly kill that beloved son with terrifying arrows.'
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमुक्तो वामदेवेन राजन्नन्तःपुरे राजपुत्रं जघान ।
स सायकस्तिग्मतेजा विसृष्टः श्रुत्वा दलस्तच्च वाक्यं बभाषे ॥७४॥
74. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evamukto vāmadevena rāja;nnantaḥpure rājaputraṁ jaghāna ,
sa sāyakastigmatejā visṛṣṭaḥ; śrutvā dalastacca vākyaṁ babhāṣe.

rājan antaḥpure rājaputraṃ jaghāna
saḥ sāyakaḥ tigmatejāḥ visṛṣṭaḥ
śrutvā dalaḥ tat ca vākyaṃ babhāṣe
74. Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'O king, thus addressed by Vāmadeva, the king killed the prince in the inner chambers. As that sharp-pointed arrow was released, Dala (the essence of the prince now dwelling in the arrow), having heard that command, spoke.'
इक्ष्वाकवो हन्त चरामि वः प्रियं निहन्मीमं विप्रमद्य प्रमथ्य ।
आनीयतामपरस्तिग्मतेजाः पश्यध्वं मे वीर्यमद्य क्षितीशाः ॥७५॥
75. ikṣvākavo hanta carāmi vaḥ priyaṁ; nihanmīmaṁ vipramadya pramathya ,
ānīyatāmaparastigmatejāḥ; paśyadhvaṁ me vīryamadya kṣitīśāḥ.
75. ikṣvākavaḥ hanta carāmi vaḥ priyaṃ
nihanmi imaṃ vipraṃ adya
pramathya ānīyatām aparaḥ tigmatejāḥ
paśyadhvaṃ me vīryaṃ adya kṣitīśāḥ
75. 'O Ikṣvākus, indeed, I shall accomplish what is dear to you! I will kill this Brahmin (vipra) today, having crushed him. Let another fiercely shining (weapon) be brought! Behold my prowess today, O rulers of the earth!'
वामदेव उवाच ।
यं त्वमेनं सायकं घोररूपं विषेण दिग्धं मम संदधासि ।
न त्वमेनं शरवर्यं विमोक्तुं संधातुं वा शक्ष्यसि मानवेन्द्र ॥७६॥
76. vāmadeva uvāca ,
yaṁ tvamenaṁ sāyakaṁ ghorarūpaṁ; viṣeṇa digdhaṁ mama saṁdadhāsi ,
na tvamenaṁ śaravaryaṁ vimoktuṁ; saṁdhātuṁ vā śakṣyasi mānavendra.
76. vāmadeva uvāca yaṃ tvaṃ enaṃ sāyakaṃ
ghorarūpaṃ विषेण digdhaṃ mama
saṃdadhāsi na tvaṃ enaṃ śaravaryaṃ
vimoktuṃ saṃdhātuṃ vā śakṣyasi mānavendra
76. Vāmadeva said: 'O lord of men (mānavendra), this terrible-looking arrow, smeared with poison, which you are aiming at me – you will not be able to release or even string this excellent arrow!'
राजोवाच ।
इक्ष्वाकवः पश्यत मां गृहीतं न वै शक्नोम्येष शरं विमोक्तुम् ।
न चास्य कर्तुं नाशमभ्युत्सहामि आयुष्मान्वै जीवतु वामदेवः ॥७७॥
77. rājovāca ,
ikṣvākavaḥ paśyata māṁ gṛhītaṁ; na vai śaknomyeṣa śaraṁ vimoktum ,
na cāsya kartuṁ nāśamabhyutsahāmi; āyuṣmānvai jīvatu vāmadevaḥ.
77. rājaḥ uvāca | ikṣvākavaḥ paśyata mām
gṛhītam na vai śaknomi eṣa śaram
vimoktum | na ca asya kartum nāśam
abhyutsahāmi āyuṣmān vai jīvatu vāmadevaḥ
77. The King said, 'O Ikṣvākus, behold me, seized! Indeed, I am unable to release this arrow, nor am I capable of destroying its effect. May Vāmadeva certainly live long!'
वामदेव उवाच ।
संस्पृशैनां महिषीं सायकेन ततस्तस्मादेनसो मोक्ष्यसे त्वम् ॥७८॥
78. vāmadeva uvāca ,
saṁspṛśaināṁ mahiṣīṁ sāyakena; tatastasmādenaso mokṣyase tvam.
78. vāmadevaḥ uvāca | saṃspṛśa enām mahiṣīm
sāyakena tataḥ tasmāt enasaḥ mokṣyase tvam
78. Vāmadeva said, 'Touch this queen with the arrow; then you will be freed from that sin.'
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततस्तथा कृतवान्पार्थिवस्तु ततो मुनिं राजपुत्री बभाषे ।
यथा युक्तं वामदेवाहमेनं दिने दिने संविशन्ती व्यशंसम् ।
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो मृगयन्ती सूनृतानि तथा ब्रह्मन्पुण्यलोकं लभेयम् ॥७९॥
79. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tatastathā kṛtavānpārthivastu; tato muniṁ rājaputrī babhāṣe ,
yathā yuktaṁ vāmadevāhamenaṁ; dine dine saṁviśantī vyaśaṁsam ,
brāhmaṇebhyo mṛgayantī sūnṛtāni; tathā brahmanpuṇyalokaṁ labheyam.
79. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | tataḥ tathā kṛtavān pārthivaḥ tu
tataḥ munim rājaputrī babhāṣe | yathā yuktam vāmadeva
aham enam dine dine saṃviśantī vyaśansam | brāhmaṇebhyaḥ
mṛgayantī sūnṛtāni tathā brahman puṇyalokam labheyam
79. Mārkaṇḍeya said, 'Then the king acted accordingly. Thereafter, the princess spoke to the sage: "O Vāmadeva, as was appropriate, I, though lying with this man (the king) day after day, constantly reproached him. Thus, by seeking good deeds (sūnṛtāni) for the brahmins, O Brahmin, may I attain a meritorious world."'
वामदेव उवाच ।
त्वया त्रातं राजकुलं शुभेक्षणे वरं वृणीष्वाप्रतिमं ददानि ते ।
प्रशाधीमं स्वजनं राजपुत्रि इक्ष्वाकुराज्यं सुमहच्चाप्यनिन्द्ये ॥८०॥
80. vāmadeva uvāca ,
tvayā trātaṁ rājakulaṁ śubhekṣaṇe; varaṁ vṛṇīṣvāpratimaṁ dadāni te ,
praśādhīmaṁ svajanaṁ rājaputri; ikṣvākurājyaṁ sumahaccāpyanindye.
80. vāmadevaḥ uvāca | tvayā trātam rājakulam
śubhekṣaṇe varam vṛṇīṣva apratimam
dadāni te | praśādhi imam svajanam rājaputri
ikṣvākurājyam sumahat ca api anindye
80. Vāmadeva said, 'You have protected the royal family, O fair-eyed one! Choose an unrivaled boon, I shall grant it to you. Rule over these your own people, O princess, and also the very great kingdom of Ikṣvāku, O blameless one!'
राजपुत्र्युवाच ।
वरं वृणे भगवन्नेकमेव विमुच्यतां किल्बिषादद्य भर्ता ।
शिवेन चाध्याहि सपुत्रबान्धवं वरो वृतो ह्येष मया द्विजाग्र्य ॥८१॥
81. rājaputryuvāca ,
varaṁ vṛṇe bhagavannekameva; vimucyatāṁ kilbiṣādadya bhartā ,
śivena cādhyāhi saputrabāndhavaṁ; varo vṛto hyeṣa mayā dvijāgrya.
81. rājaputrī uvāca varam vṛṇe bhagavan
ekam eva vimucyatām kilbiṣāt adya
bhartā śivena ca adhyāhi saputrabāndhavam
varaḥ vṛtaḥ hi eṣa mayā dvijāgrya
81. The princess said: 'O venerable one, I ask for just one boon: let my husband be freed from sin today. And, O foremost among the twice-born, may you auspiciously grant him this chosen boon, along with his son and relatives; for this very boon has indeed been chosen by me.'
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा वचः स मुनी राजपुत्र्यास्तथास्त्विति प्राह कुरुप्रवीर ।
ततः स राजा मुदितो बभूव वाम्यौ चास्मै संप्रददौ प्रणम्य ॥८२॥
82. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
śrutvā vacaḥ sa munī rājaputryā;stathāstviti prāha kurupravīra ,
tataḥ sa rājā mudito babhūva; vāmyau cāsmai saṁpradadau praṇamya.
82. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca śrutvā vacaḥ sa muniḥ
rājaputryāḥ tathā astu iti prāha
kurupravīra tataḥ sa rājā muditaḥ babhūva
vāmyau ca asmai saṃpradadau praṇamya
82. Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'O hero of the Kurus, having heard the princess's words, that sage said, "So be it!" Then, that king became delighted and, having bowed down, bestowed two maidens upon him (the sage).'
