लोमश उवाच ।
समुद्रं ते समाश्रित्य वारुणं निधिमम्भसाम् ।
कालेयाः संप्रवर्तन्त त्रैलोक्यस्य विनाशने ॥१॥

samudraṁ te samāśritya vāruṇaṁ nidhimambhasām ,

1. Lomaśa said: Having taken refuge in the ocean, Varuṇa's watery abode, the Kāleyas began to act for the destruction of the three worlds.
ते रात्रौ समभिक्रुद्धा भक्षयन्ति सदा मुनीन् ।
आश्रमेषु च ये सन्ति पुन्येष्वायतनेषु च ॥२॥
2. te rātrau samabhikruddhā bhakṣayanti sadā munīn ,
āśrameṣu ca ye santi punyeṣvāyataneṣu ca.
2. te rātrau samabhikruddhāḥ bhakṣayanti sadā
munīn āśrameṣu ca ye santi puṇyeṣu āyataneṣu ca
2. Exceedingly enraged, they always devour the sages at night, especially those who reside in hermitages (āśrama) and holy shrines.
वसिष्ठस्याश्रमे विप्रा भक्षितास्तैर्दुरात्मभिः ।
अशीतिशतमष्टौ च नव चान्ये तपस्विनः ॥३॥
3. vasiṣṭhasyāśrame viprā bhakṣitāstairdurātmabhiḥ ,
aśītiśatamaṣṭau ca nava cānye tapasvinaḥ.
3. vasiṣṭhasya āśrame viprāḥ bhakṣitāḥ taiḥ durātmabhiḥ
aśīti-śatam aṣṭau ca nava ca anye tapasvinaḥ
3. In Vasishtha's hermitage (āśrama), those wicked beings devoured one hundred and eighty-eight Brahmins and nine other ascetics (tapasvin).
च्यवनस्याश्रमं गत्वा पुण्यं द्विजनिषेवितम् ।
फलमूलाशनानां हि मुनीनां भक्षितं शतम् ॥४॥
4. cyavanasyāśramaṁ gatvā puṇyaṁ dvijaniṣevitam ,
phalamūlāśanānāṁ hi munīnāṁ bhakṣitaṁ śatam.
4. cyavanasya āśramam gatvā puṇyam dvija-niṣevitam
phala-mūla-aśanānām hi munīnām bhakṣitam śatam
4. Having gone to Chyavana's sacred hermitage (āśrama), which was frequented by Brahmins (dvija), they indeed devoured a hundred sages (muni) who subsisted on fruits and roots.
एवं रात्रौ स्म कुर्वन्ति विविशुश्चार्णवं दिवा ।
भरद्वाजाश्रमे चैव नियता ब्रह्मचारिणः ।
वाय्वाहाराम्बुभक्षाश्च विंशतिः संनिपातिताः ॥५॥
5. evaṁ rātrau sma kurvanti viviśuścārṇavaṁ divā ,
bharadvājāśrame caiva niyatā brahmacāriṇaḥ ,
vāyvāhārāmbubhakṣāśca viṁśatiḥ saṁnipātitāḥ.
5. evam rātrau sma kurvanti viviśuḥ ca
arṇavam divā bharadvāja-āśrame ca eva
niyatāḥ brahmacāriṇaḥ vāyu-āhāra-ambu-bhakṣāḥ
ca viṃśatiḥ saṃnipātitāḥ
5. Thus they acted at night, and by day they would enter the ocean. Also, in Bharadvaja's hermitage (āśrama), twenty restrained celibates (brahmacārin) who subsisted only on air and water were killed.
एवं क्रमेण सर्वांस्तानाश्रमान्दानवास्तदा ।
निशायां परिधावन्ति मत्ता भुजबलाश्रयात् ।
कालोपसृष्टाः कालेया घ्नन्तो द्विजगणान्बहून् ॥६॥
6. evaṁ krameṇa sarvāṁstānāśramāndānavāstadā ,
niśāyāṁ paridhāvanti mattā bhujabalāśrayāt ,
kālopasṛṣṭāḥ kāleyā ghnanto dvijagaṇānbahūn.
6. evam krameṇa sarvān tān āśramān
dānavāḥ tadā niśāyām paridhāvanti mattāḥ
bhuja-bala-āśrayāt kāla-upasṛṣṭāḥ
kāleyāḥ ghnantaḥ dvija-gaṇān bahūn
6. Thus, in this manner, those Dānavas, the Kāleyas, afflicted by time (kāla), would then roam about at night through all those hermitages (āśrama), intoxicated by the strength of their arms, killing many groups of Brahmins (dvija).
न चैनानन्वबुध्यन्त मनुजा मनुजोत्तम ।
एवं प्रवृत्तान्दैत्यांस्तांस्तापसेषु तपस्विषु ॥७॥
7. na cainānanvabudhyanta manujā manujottama ,
evaṁ pravṛttāndaityāṁstāṁstāpaseṣu tapasviṣu.
7. na ca enān anvabudhyanta manujā manujottama
evam pravṛttān daityān tān tāpaseṣu tapasviṣu
7. O best of men, humans did not recognize those demons who were thus behaving towards the ascetics engaged in severe austerities (tapas).
प्रभाते समदृश्यन्त नियताहारकर्शिताः ।
महीतलस्था मुनयः शरीरैर्गतजीवितैः ॥८॥
8. prabhāte samadṛśyanta niyatāhārakarśitāḥ ,
mahītalasthā munayaḥ śarīrairgatajīvitaiḥ.
8. prabhāte samadṛśyanta niyatāhārakarśitāḥ
mahītalasthā munayaḥ śarīraiḥ gatajīvitaiḥ
8. In the morning, the monks, emaciated from their regulated diet, were seen lying on the ground, their bodies bereft of life.
क्षीणमांसैर्विरुधिरैर्विमज्जान्त्रैर्विसंधिभिः ।
आकीर्णैराचिता भूमिः शङ्खानामिव राशिभिः ॥९॥
9. kṣīṇamāṁsairvirudhirairvimajjāntrairvisaṁdhibhiḥ ,
ākīrṇairācitā bhūmiḥ śaṅkhānāmiva rāśibhiḥ.
9. kṣīṇamāṃsaiḥ virudhiraiḥ vimajjāntraiḥ visandhibhiḥ
ākīrṇaiḥ ācitā bhūmiḥ śaṅkhānām iva rāśibhiḥ
9. The ground was covered and filled with these bodies - their flesh wasted, devoid of blood, without marrow or intestines, and with dislocated joints - like heaps of conch shells.
कलशैर्विप्रविद्धैश्च स्रुवैर्भग्नैस्तथैव च ।
विकीर्णैरग्निहोत्रैश्च भूर्बभूव समावृता ॥१०॥
10. kalaśairvipraviddhaiśca sruvairbhagnaistathaiva ca ,
vikīrṇairagnihotraiśca bhūrbabhūva samāvṛtā.
10. kalaśaiḥ vipraviddhaiḥ ca sruvaiḥ bhagnaiḥ tathā eva
ca vikīrṇaiḥ agnihotraiḥ ca bhūḥ babhūva samāvṛtā
10. And the earth became completely covered with scattered water pots, similarly with broken sacrificial ladles, and with scattered sacrificial fires (agnihotra).
निःस्वाध्यायवषट्कारं नष्टयज्ञोत्सवक्रियम् ।
जगदासीन्निरुत्साहं कालेयभयपीडितम् ॥११॥
11. niḥsvādhyāyavaṣaṭkāraṁ naṣṭayajñotsavakriyam ,
jagadāsīnnirutsāhaṁ kāleyabhayapīḍitam.
11. niḥsvādhyāyavaṣaṭkāram naṣṭayajñotsavakriyam
jagat āsīt nirutsāham kāleyabhayapīḍitam
11. The world became devoid of personal study (svādhyāya) and ritual oblations, with its sacrificial (yajña) and festive activities diminished. Afflicted by fear of the Kāleyas (demons), it became dispirited.
एवं प्रक्षीयमाणाश्च मानवा मनुजेश्वर ।
आत्मत्राणपरा भीताः प्राद्रवन्त दिशो भयात् ॥१२॥
12. evaṁ prakṣīyamāṇāśca mānavā manujeśvara ,
ātmatrāṇaparā bhītāḥ prādravanta diśo bhayāt.
12. evam prakṣīyamāṇāḥ ca mānavāḥ manujeśvara
ātmatrāṇaparāḥ bhītāḥ prādravanta diśaḥ bhayāt
12. O King of Men, thus diminishing and fearful, people solely focused on self-preservation (ātmatrāṇa) fled in all directions out of fear.
केचिद्गुहाः प्रविविशुर्निर्झरांश्चापरे श्रिताः ।
अपरे मरणोद्विग्ना भयात्प्रानान्समुत्सृजन् ॥१३॥
13. kecidguhāḥ praviviśurnirjharāṁścāpare śritāḥ ,
apare maraṇodvignā bhayātprānānsamutsṛjan.
13. kecit guhāḥ praviviśuḥ nirjharān ca apare śritāḥ
apare maraṇodvignāḥ bhayāt prāṇān samutsṛjan
13. Some entered caves, and others took refuge in mountain streams. Still others, agitated by impending death, gave up their very vital breaths (prāṇa) out of fear.
केचिदत्र महेष्वासाः शूराः परमदर्पिताः ।
मार्गमाणाः परं यत्नं दानवानां प्रचक्रिरे ॥१४॥
14. kecidatra maheṣvāsāḥ śūrāḥ paramadarpitāḥ ,
mārgamāṇāḥ paraṁ yatnaṁ dānavānāṁ pracakrire.
14. kecit atra maheṣvāsāḥ śūrāḥ paramadarpitāḥ
mārgamāṇāḥ param yatnam dānavānām pracakrire
14. Among them, some were great archers and brave heroes, who, though exceedingly proud, exerted their utmost efforts in searching for the Dānavas.
न चैतानधिजग्मुस्ते समुद्रं समुपाश्रितान् ।
श्रमं जग्मुश्च परममाजग्मुः क्षयमेव च ॥१५॥
15. na caitānadhijagmuste samudraṁ samupāśritān ,
śramaṁ jagmuśca paramamājagmuḥ kṣayameva ca.
15. na ca etān adhijagmuḥ te samudraṃ samupāśritān
śramaṃ jagmuḥ ca paramaṃ ājagmuḥ kṣayaṃ eva ca
15. They could not overcome those who had taken refuge in the ocean; instead, they reached great exhaustion and, indeed, met with ruin.
जगत्युपशमं याते नष्टयज्ञोत्सवक्रिये ।
आजग्मुः परमामार्तिं त्रिदशा मनुजेश्वर ॥१६॥
16. jagatyupaśamaṁ yāte naṣṭayajñotsavakriye ,
ājagmuḥ paramāmārtiṁ tridaśā manujeśvara.
16. jagati upaśamaṃ yāte naṣṭayajñotsavakriye
ājagmuḥ paramāṃ ārtiṃ tridaśā manujeśvara
16. O lord of men, when the world had attained a state of tranquility and its rituals for Vedic rituals (yajña) and festivals had ceased, the gods experienced great distress.
समेत्य समहेन्द्राश्च भयान्मन्त्रं प्रचक्रिरे ।
नारायणं पुरस्कृत्य वैकुण्ठमपराजितम् ॥१७॥
17. sametya samahendrāśca bhayānmantraṁ pracakrire ,
nārāyaṇaṁ puraskṛtya vaikuṇṭhamaparājitam.
17. sametya sa-mahendrāḥ ca bhayāt mantraṃ pracakrire
nārāyaṇaṃ puraskṛtya vaikuṇṭhaṃ aparājitam
17. Having assembled, even with Indra present, they made a plan out of fear, taking Narayana, the unconquered (aparājita) lord of Vaikuntha, as their leader.
ततो देवाः समेतास्ते तदोचुर्मधुसूदनम् ।
त्वं नः स्रष्टा च पाता च भर्ता च जगतः प्रभो ।
त्वया सृष्टमिदं सर्वं यच्चेङ्गं यच्च नेङ्गति ॥१८॥
18. tato devāḥ sametāste tadocurmadhusūdanam ,
tvaṁ naḥ sraṣṭā ca pātā ca bhartā ca jagataḥ prabho ,
tvayā sṛṣṭamidaṁ sarvaṁ yacceṅgaṁ yacca neṅgati.
18. tataḥ devāḥ sametāḥ te tadā ūcuḥ
madhusūdanaṃ tvaṃ naḥ sraṣṭā ca pātā ca bhartā
ca jagataḥ prabho tvayā sṛṣṭaṃ idaṃ
sarvaṃ yat ca iṅgaṃ yat ca na iṅgati
18. Then, the assembled gods spoke to Madhusudana (Vishnu): 'O Lord, You are our creator, protector, and sustainer of the world. By You, all this universe has been created, both that which moves and that which does not.'
त्वया भूमिः पुरा नष्टा समुद्रात्पुष्करेक्षण ।
वाराहं रूपमास्थाय जगदर्थे समुद्धृता ॥१९॥
19. tvayā bhūmiḥ purā naṣṭā samudrātpuṣkarekṣaṇa ,
vārāhaṁ rūpamāsthāya jagadarthe samuddhṛtā.
19. tvayā bhūmiḥ purā naṣṭā samudrāt puṣkarekṣaṇa
vārāham rūpam āsthāya jagat arthe samuddṛtā
19. O lotus-eyed one (puṣkarekṣaṇa), you formerly raised up the earth, which had been lost in the ocean, for the sake of the world, by assuming a boar (vārāham) form.
आदिदैत्यो महावीर्यो हिरण्यकशिपुस्त्वया ।
नारसिंहं वपुः कृत्वा सूदितः पुरुषोत्तम ॥२०॥
20. ādidaityo mahāvīryo hiraṇyakaśipustvayā ,
nārasiṁhaṁ vapuḥ kṛtvā sūditaḥ puruṣottama.
20. ādidaitaḥ mahāvīryaḥ hiraṇyakaśipuḥ tvayā
nārasiṃham vapuḥ kṛtvā sūditaḥ puruṣottama
20. O Supreme Person (puruṣa), you killed the primordial and very powerful demon Hiranyakashipu by assuming a man-lion (nārasiṃham) form.
अवध्यः सर्वभूतानां बलिश्चापि महासुरः ।
वामनं वपुराश्रित्य त्रैलोक्याद्भ्रंशितस्त्वया ॥२१॥
21. avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ baliścāpi mahāsuraḥ ,
vāmanaṁ vapurāśritya trailokyādbhraṁśitastvayā.
21. avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānām baliḥ ca api mahāsuraḥ
vāmanam vapuḥ āśritya trailokyāt bhraṃśitaḥ tvayā
21. And the great demon Bali, who was immune to death (avadhyaḥ) by all beings, was also dislodged from the three worlds by you, after you assumed a dwarf (vāmanam) form.
असुरश्च महेष्वासो जम्भ इत्यभिविश्रुतः ।
यज्ञक्षोभकरः क्रूरस्त्वयैव विनिपातितः ॥२२॥
22. asuraśca maheṣvāso jambha ityabhiviśrutaḥ ,
yajñakṣobhakaraḥ krūrastvayaiva vinipātitaḥ.
22. asuraḥ ca maheṣvāsaḥ jambhaḥ iti abhiviśrutaḥ
yajñakṣobhakaraḥ krūraḥ tvayā eva vinipātitaḥ
22. And the cruel demon Jambha, a great archer (maheṣvāsaḥ) renowned as a disturber of Vedic rituals (yajña), was indeed struck down by you.
एवमादीनि कर्माणि येषां संख्या न विद्यते ।
अस्माकं भयभीतानां त्वं गतिर्मधुसूदन ॥२३॥
23. evamādīni karmāṇi yeṣāṁ saṁkhyā na vidyate ,
asmākaṁ bhayabhītānāṁ tvaṁ gatirmadhusūdana.
23. evam ādīni karmāṇi yeṣām saṅkhyā na vidyate
asmākam bhayabhītānām tvam gatiḥ madhusūdana
23. The number of such actions (karma) as these is not known. For us, who are overwhelmed by fear, you are the refuge, O Madhusūdana.
तस्मात्त्वां देव देवेश लोकार्थं ज्ञापयामहे ।
रक्ष लोकांश्च देवांश्च शक्रं च महतो भयात् ॥२४॥
24. tasmāttvāṁ deva deveśa lokārthaṁ jñāpayāmahe ,
rakṣa lokāṁśca devāṁśca śakraṁ ca mahato bhayāt.
24. tasmāt tvām deva deveśa loka artham jñāpayāmahe
rakṣa lokān ca devān ca śakram ca mahataḥ bhayāt
24. Therefore, O God, O Lord of gods, we make this request to You for the sake of the worlds. Protect the worlds, the gods, and Śakra, from great fear.
