मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इक्ष्वाकौ संस्थिते राजञ्शशादः पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
प्राप्तः परमधर्मात्मा सोऽयोध्यायां नृपोऽभवत् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
ikṣvākau saṁsthite rājañśaśādaḥ pṛthivīmimām ,
prāptaḥ paramadharmātmā so'yodhyāyāṁ nṛpo'bhavat.

imām prāptaḥ paramadharmātmā saḥ ayodhyāyām nṛpaḥ abhavat
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: O King, when Ikṣvāku had passed away, King Śaśāda, who was supremely righteous (dharma), obtained this earth and became king in Ayodhyā.
शशादस्य तु दायादः ककुत्स्थो नाम वीर्यवान् ।
अनेनाश्चापि काकुत्स्थः पृथुश्चानेनसः सुतः ॥२॥
2. śaśādasya tu dāyādaḥ kakutstho nāma vīryavān ,
anenāścāpi kākutsthaḥ pṛthuścānenasaḥ sutaḥ.
2. śaśādasya tu dāyādaḥ kakutsthaḥ nāma vīryavān
anenāḥ ca api kākutsthaḥ pṛthuḥ ca anenasas sutaḥ
2. Kakutstha, a powerful descendant of Śaśāda, was born. And Anenas was also a descendant of Kakutstha, and Pṛthu was the son of Anenas.
विष्वगश्वः पृथोः पुत्रस्तस्मादार्द्रस्तु जज्ञिवान् ।
आर्द्रस्य युवनाश्वस्तु श्रावस्तस्तस्य चात्मजः ॥३॥
3. viṣvagaśvaḥ pṛthoḥ putrastasmādārdrastu jajñivān ,
ārdrasya yuvanāśvastu śrāvastastasya cātmajaḥ.
3. viṣvagaśvaḥ pṛthoḥ putraḥ tasmāt ārdraḥ tu jajñivān
ārdrasya yuvanāśvaḥ tu śrāvastaḥ tasya ca ātmajaḥ
3. Viṣvagaśva was the son of Pṛthu; from him (Viṣvagaśva), Ārdra was born. Yuvanāśva was the son of Ārdra, and Śrāvasta was his (Yuvanāśva's) son.
जज्ञे श्रावस्तको राजा श्रावस्ती येन निर्मिता ।
श्रावस्तस्य तु दायादो बृहदश्वो महाबलः ।
बृहदश्वसुतश्चापि कुवलाश्व इति स्मृतः ॥४॥
4. jajñe śrāvastako rājā śrāvastī yena nirmitā ,
śrāvastasya tu dāyādo bṛhadaśvo mahābalaḥ ,
bṛhadaśvasutaścāpi kuvalāśva iti smṛtaḥ.
4. jajñe śrāvastaḥ rājā śrāvastī yena
nirmitā śrāvastasya tu dāyādaḥ
bṛhadaśvaḥ mahābalaḥ bṛhadaśvasutaḥ
ca api kuvalāśvaḥ iti smṛtaḥ
4. King Śrāvasta, by whom the city of Śrāvastī was built, was born. Bṛhadaśva, the mighty descendant of Śrāvasta, was born. And Bṛhadaśva's son was also known as Kuvalāśva.
कुवलाश्वस्य पुत्राणां सहस्राण्येकविंशतिः ।
सर्वे विद्यासु निष्णाता बलवन्तो दुरासदाः ॥५॥
5. kuvalāśvasya putrāṇāṁ sahasrāṇyekaviṁśatiḥ ,
sarve vidyāsu niṣṇātā balavanto durāsadāḥ.
5. kuvalāśvasya putrāṇām sahasrāṇi ekaviṃśatiḥ
sarve vidyāsu niṣṇātāḥ balavantaḥ durāsadāḥ
5. Kuvalāśva had twenty-one thousand sons. All of them were proficient in various sciences, powerful, and formidable.
कुवलाश्वस्तु पितृतो गुणैरभ्यधिकोऽभवत् ।
समये तं ततो राज्ये बृहदश्वोऽभ्यषेचयत् ।
कुवलाश्वं महाराज शूरमुत्तमधार्मिकम् ॥६॥
6. kuvalāśvastu pitṛto guṇairabhyadhiko'bhavat ,
samaye taṁ tato rājye bṛhadaśvo'bhyaṣecayat ,
kuvalāśvaṁ mahārāja śūramuttamadhārmikam.
6. Kuvalāśvaḥ tu pitṛtaḥ guṇaiḥ
abhyadhikaḥ abhavat samaye tam tataḥ
rājye Bṛhadaśvaḥ abhyaṣecayat Kuvalāśvaṃ
mahārāja śūraṃ uttamadhārmikam
6. Kuvalashva, moreover, surpassed his father in qualities. At the appropriate time, Brihadashva then installed that brave, supremely righteous great king (Kuvalashva) on the throne.
पुत्रसंक्रामितश्रीस्तु बृहदश्वो महीपतिः ।
जगाम तपसे धीमांस्तपोवनममित्रहा ॥७॥
7. putrasaṁkrāmitaśrīstu bṛhadaśvo mahīpatiḥ ,
jagāma tapase dhīmāṁstapovanamamitrahā.
7. putrasaṅkrāmitnaśrīḥ tu Bṛhadaśvaḥ mahīpatiḥ
jagāma tapase dhīmān tapovanaṃ amitrahā
7. Having transferred his regal glory (śrī) to his son, the wise king Brihadashva, who was a slayer of enemies, went to the forest of austerity (tapovana) for ascetic practices (tapas).
अथ शुश्राव राजर्षिं तमुत्तङ्को युधिष्ठिर ।
वनं संप्रस्थितं राजन्बृहदश्वं द्विजोत्तमः ॥८॥
8. atha śuśrāva rājarṣiṁ tamuttaṅko yudhiṣṭhira ,
vanaṁ saṁprasthitaṁ rājanbṛhadaśvaṁ dvijottamaḥ.
8. atha śuśrāva rājarṣiṃ tam Uttaṅkaḥ Yudhiṣṭhira
vanaṃ saṃprasthitaṃ rājan Bṛhadaśvaṃ dvijottamaḥ
8. Then, O Yudhishthira, O king, Uttanka, the foremost among the twice-born (dvija), heard that royal sage (rājarṣi) Brihadashva had set out for the forest.
तमुत्तङ्को महातेजाः सर्वास्त्रविदुषां वरम् ।
न्यवारयदमेयात्मा समासाद्य नरोत्तमम् ॥९॥
9. tamuttaṅko mahātejāḥ sarvāstraviduṣāṁ varam ,
nyavārayadameyātmā samāsādya narottamam.
9. tam Uttaṅkaḥ mahātejāḥ sarvāstraviduṣāṃ varam
nyavārayat ameyātmā samāsādya narottamam
9. Uttanka, whose soul (ātman) was immeasurable and who possessed great radiance, having approached that most excellent man (narottama) Brihadashva, who was also the foremost among those knowledgeable in all weapons, stopped him.
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
भवता रक्षणं कार्यं तत्तावत्कर्तुमर्हसि ।
निरुद्विग्ना वयं राजंस्त्वत्प्रसादाद्वसेमहि ॥१०॥
10. uttaṅka uvāca ,
bhavatā rakṣaṇaṁ kāryaṁ tattāvatkartumarhasi ,
nirudvignā vayaṁ rājaṁstvatprasādādvasemahi.
10. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca bhavatā rakṣaṇam kāryam tat tāvat kartum
arhasi nirudvignā vayam rājan tvat-prasādāt vasemahi
10. Uttanka said: You must carry out this duty of protection. O King, by your grace, we can reside here without worry.
त्वया हि पृथिवी राजन्रक्ष्यमाणा महात्मना ।
भविष्यति निरुद्विग्ना नारण्यं गन्तुमर्हसि ॥११॥
11. tvayā hi pṛthivī rājanrakṣyamāṇā mahātmanā ,
bhaviṣyati nirudvignā nāraṇyaṁ gantumarhasi.
11. tvayā hi pṛthivī rājan rakṣyamāṇā mahā-ātmanā
bhaviṣyati nirudvignā na araṇyam gantum arhasi
11. O King, when the earth is protected by you, the great-souled one, it will indeed be free from worry. You must not go to the forest.
पालने हि महान्धर्मः प्रजानामिह दृश्यते ।
न तथा दृश्यतेऽरण्ये मा ते भूद्बुद्धिरीदृशी ॥१२॥
12. pālane hi mahāndharmaḥ prajānāmiha dṛśyate ,
na tathā dṛśyate'raṇye mā te bhūdbuddhirīdṛśī.
12. pālane hi mahān dharmaḥ prajānām iha dṛśyate na
tathā dṛśyate araṇye mā te bhūt buddhiḥ īdṛśī
12. Indeed, a great sense of natural law (dharma) is evident here in protecting the people, but it is not seen in the same way in the forest. May you not have such a thought.
ईदृशो न हि राजेन्द्र धर्मः क्वचन दृश्यते ।
प्रजानां पालने यो वै पुरा राजर्षिभिः कृतः ।
रक्षितव्याः प्रजा राज्ञा तास्त्वं रक्षितुमर्हसि ॥१३॥
13. īdṛśo na hi rājendra dharmaḥ kvacana dṛśyate ,
prajānāṁ pālane yo vai purā rājarṣibhiḥ kṛtaḥ ,
rakṣitavyāḥ prajā rājñā tāstvaṁ rakṣitumarhasi.
13. īdṛśaḥ na hi rājendra dharmaḥ kvacana
dṛśyate prajānām pālane yaḥ vai
purā rājarṣibhiḥ kṛtaḥ rakṣitavyāḥ
prajā rājñā tāḥ tvam rakṣitum arhasi
13. Indeed, O great king, such a principle of natural law (dharma) for protecting the subjects, as was formerly observed by royal sages, is not seen anywhere else. The subjects must be protected by the king; you ought to protect them.
निरुद्विग्नस्तपश्चर्तुं न हि शक्नोमि पार्थिव ।
ममाश्रमसमीपे वै समेषु मरुधन्वसु ॥१४॥
14. nirudvignastapaścartuṁ na hi śaknomi pārthiva ,
mamāśramasamīpe vai sameṣu marudhanvasu.
14. nirudvighnaḥ tapaḥ cartum na hi śaknomi pārthiva
mama āśramasāmīpe vai sameṣu marudhanvasu
14. O king, I am indeed unable to perform my penance (tapas) without disturbance near my hermitage, which is situated in these flat desert regions.
समुद्रो वालुकापूर्ण उज्जानक इति स्मृतः ।
बहुयोजनविस्तीर्णो बहुयोजनमायतः ॥१५॥
15. samudro vālukāpūrṇa ujjānaka iti smṛtaḥ ,
bahuyojanavistīrṇo bahuyojanamāyataḥ.
15. samudraḥ vālukāpūrṇaḥ ujjānaka iti smṛtaḥ
bahuyojanavistīrṇaḥ bahuyojanamāyataḥ
15. This sand-filled ocean is known as Ujjānaka. It is many yojanas wide and many yojanas long.
तत्र रौद्रो दानवेन्द्रो महावीर्यपराक्रमः ।
मधुकैटभयोः पुत्रो धुन्धुर्नाम सुदारुणः ॥१६॥
16. tatra raudro dānavendro mahāvīryaparākramaḥ ,
madhukaiṭabhayoḥ putro dhundhurnāma sudāruṇaḥ.
16. tatra raudraḥ dānavendraḥ mahāvīryaparākramaḥ
madhukaiṭabhayoḥ putraḥ dhundhuḥ nāma sudāruṇaḥ
16. There resides a fierce chief of demons (dānava), possessing great valor and might. He is the son of Madhu and Kaiṭabha, named Dhundhu, and is exceedingly dreadful.
अन्तर्भूमिगतो राजन्वसत्यमितविक्रमः ।
तं निहत्य महाराज वनं त्वं गन्तुमर्हसि ॥१७॥
17. antarbhūmigato rājanvasatyamitavikramaḥ ,
taṁ nihatya mahārāja vanaṁ tvaṁ gantumarhasi.
17. antarbhūmigataḥ rājan vasati amitavikramaḥ
tam nihatya mahārāja vanam tvam gantum arhasi
17. O king, he of immeasurable valor dwells within the earth. Having slain him, O great king, you should proceed to the forest.
शेते लोकविनाशाय तप आस्थाय दारुणम् ।
त्रिदशानां विनाशाय लोकानां चापि पार्थिव ॥१८॥
18. śete lokavināśāya tapa āsthāya dāruṇam ,
tridaśānāṁ vināśāya lokānāṁ cāpi pārthiva.
18. śete lokavināśāya tapaḥ āsthāya dāruṇam
tridaśānām vināśāya lokānām ca api pārthiva
18. He lies, having undertaken a terrible austerity (tapas), for the destruction of the worlds. Indeed, O King, it is also for the destruction of the gods and other beings.
अवध्यो देवतानां स दैत्यानामथ रक्षसाम् ।
नागानामथ यक्षाणां गन्धर्वाणां च सर्वशः ।
अवाप्य स वरं राजन्सर्वलोकपितामहात् ॥१९॥
19. avadhyo devatānāṁ sa daityānāmatha rakṣasām ,
nāgānāmatha yakṣāṇāṁ gandharvāṇāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ ,
avāpya sa varaṁ rājansarvalokapitāmahāt.
19. avadhyah devatānām saḥ daityānām
atha rakṣasām nāgānām atha yakṣāṇām
gandharvāṇām ca sarvaśaḥ avāpya
saḥ varam rājan sarvalokapitāmahāt
19. O King, having obtained a boon from the grandfather of all worlds, he is entirely invulnerable to the gods, the daityas, the rakshasas, the nagas, the yakshas, and the gandharvas.
तं विनाशय भद्रं ते मा ते बुद्धिरतोऽन्यथा ।
प्राप्स्यसे महतीं कीर्तिं शाश्वतीमव्ययां ध्रुवाम् ॥२०॥
20. taṁ vināśaya bhadraṁ te mā te buddhirato'nyathā ,
prāpsyase mahatīṁ kīrtiṁ śāśvatīmavyayāṁ dhruvām.
20. tam vināśaya bhadram te mā te buddhiḥ ataḥ anyathā
prāpsyase mahatīm kīrtim śāśvatīm avyayām dhruvām
20. Destroy him! May good fortune be with you. Do not let your intention be otherwise. You will achieve great, eternal, imperishable, and enduring fame.
क्रूरस्य स्वपतस्तस्य वालुकान्तर्हितस्य वै ।
संवत्सरस्य पर्यन्ते निःश्वासः संप्रवर्तते ।
यदा तदा भूश्चलति सशैलवनकानना ॥२१॥
21. krūrasya svapatastasya vālukāntarhitasya vai ,
saṁvatsarasya paryante niḥśvāsaḥ saṁpravartate ,
yadā tadā bhūścalati saśailavanakānanā.
21. krūrasya svapatas tasya vālukāntarhitasya
vai saṃvatsarasya paryante
niḥśvāsaḥ saṃpravartate yadā
tadā bhūḥ calati saśailavanakānanā
21. Indeed, at the end of a year, that cruel one, sleeping and hidden in the sand, exhales a breath (niḥśvāsa). Whenever that happens, the earth, along with its mountains, forests, and groves, trembles.
तस्य निःश्वासवातेन रज उद्धूयते महत् ।
आदित्यपथमावृत्य सप्ताहं भूमिकम्पनम् ।
सविस्फुलिङ्गं सज्वालं सधूमं ह्यतिदारुणम् ॥२२॥
22. tasya niḥśvāsavātena raja uddhūyate mahat ,
ādityapathamāvṛtya saptāhaṁ bhūmikampanam ,
savisphuliṅgaṁ sajvālaṁ sadhūmaṁ hyatidāruṇam.
22. tasya niḥśvāsavātena rajaḥ uddhūyate
mahat ādityapatham āvṛtya
saptāham bhūmikampanam savisphuliṅgam
sajjvālam sadhūmam hi atidāruṇam
22. By the wind of his breath, a great cloud of dust is raised, obscuring the path of the sun. Indeed, for a week there is an extremely terrible earthquake, accompanied by sparks, flames, and smoke.
तेन राजन्न शक्नोमि तस्मिन्स्थातुं स्व आश्रमे ।
तं विनाशय राजेन्द्र लोकानां हितकाम्यया ।
लोकाः स्वस्था भवन्त्वद्य तस्मिन्विनिहतेऽसुरे ॥२३॥
23. tena rājanna śaknomi tasminsthātuṁ sva āśrame ,
taṁ vināśaya rājendra lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā ,
lokāḥ svasthā bhavantvadya tasminvinihate'sure.
23. tena rājan na śaknomi tasmin sthātum
sva āśrame tam vināśaya rājendra
lokānām hitakāmyayā lokāḥ svasthāḥ
bhavantu adya tasmin vinihate asure
23. Therefore, O king, I am unable to stay in my own hermitage (āśrama) in that situation. O king of kings, destroy him for the welfare of the people. Let the people be at peace today when that demon (asura) is slain.
त्वं हि तस्य विनाशाय पर्याप्त इति मे मतिः ।
तेजसा तव तेजश्च विष्णुराप्याययिष्यति ॥२४॥
24. tvaṁ hi tasya vināśāya paryāpta iti me matiḥ ,
tejasā tava tejaśca viṣṇurāpyāyayiṣyati.
24. tvam hi tasya vināśāya paryāptaḥ iti me matiḥ
tejasā tava tejaḥ ca viṣṇuḥ āpyāyayisyati
24. Indeed, it is my opinion that you are capable of his destruction. And Viṣṇu will augment your radiance/power with his own radiance/power.
विष्णुना च वरो दत्तो मम पूर्वं ततो वधे ।
यस्तं महासुरं रौद्रं वधिष्यति महीपतिः ।
तेजस्तं वैष्णवमिति प्रवेक्ष्यति दुरासदम् ॥२५॥
25. viṣṇunā ca varo datto mama pūrvaṁ tato vadhe ,
yastaṁ mahāsuraṁ raudraṁ vadhiṣyati mahīpatiḥ ,
tejastaṁ vaiṣṇavamiti pravekṣyati durāsadam.
25. viṣṇunā ca varaḥ dattaḥ mama pūrvam
tataḥ vadhe yaḥ tam mahāsuram raudram
vadhiṣyati mahīpatiḥ tejaḥ tam
vaiṣṇavam iti pravekṣyati durāsadam
25. And a boon was given to me by Viṣṇu previously regarding his killing. Whoever that king (mahīpatiḥ) is who will kill that fierce great demon (mahāsura), into him will enter the unassailable power (tejas) of Viṣṇu.
तत्तेजस्त्वं समाधाय राजेन्द्र भुवि दुःसहम् ।
तं निषूदय संदुष्टं दैत्यं रौद्रपराक्रमम् ॥२६॥
26. tattejastvaṁ samādhāya rājendra bhuvi duḥsaham ,
taṁ niṣūdaya saṁduṣṭaṁ daityaṁ raudraparākramam.
26. tat tejas tvam samādhāya rājendra bhuvi duḥsaham
tam niṣūdaya samduṣṭam daityam raudraparākramam
26. O King of kings, concentrating that formidable energy, which is unbearable on earth, destroy that very wicked demon of terrifying prowess.
न हि धुन्धुर्महातेजास्तेजसाल्पेन शक्यते ।
निर्दग्धुं पृथिवीपाल स हि वर्षशतैरपि ॥२७॥
27. na hi dhundhurmahātejāstejasālpena śakyate ,
nirdagdhuṁ pṛthivīpāla sa hi varṣaśatairapi.
27. na hi dhundhuḥ mahātejāḥ tejasā alpena śakyate
nirdagdhum pṛthivīpāla sa hi varṣaśataiḥ api
27. Indeed, O protector of the earth, Dhundhu, who possesses great splendor, cannot be destroyed with meager energy, not even over hundreds of years.
