युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
इमे वै मानवा लोके स्त्रीषु सज्जन्त्यभीक्ष्णशः ।
मोहेन परमाविष्टा दैवादिष्टेन पार्थिव ।
स्त्रियश्च पुरुषेष्वेव प्रत्यक्षं लोकसाक्षिकम् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ime vai mānavā loke strīṣu sajjantyabhīkṣṇaśaḥ ,
mohena paramāviṣṭā daivādiṣṭena pārthiva ,
striyaśca puruṣeṣveva pratyakṣaṁ lokasākṣikam.
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca ime vai mānavāḥ loke
strīṣu sajjanti abhīkṣṇaśaḥ mohena
parama-āviṣṭāḥ daiva-ādiṣṭena pārthiva striyaḥ
ca puruṣeṣu eva pratyakṣam loka-sākṣikam
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca: pārthiva,
loke ime mānavāḥ vai daiva-ādiṣṭena paramāviṣṭāḥ mohena abhīkṣṇaśaḥ strīṣu sajjanti.
ca striyaḥ (api sajjanti) puruṣeṣu eva.
(etat) pratyakṣam loka-sākṣikam
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O King (pārthiva), these humans in the world constantly become attached to women, being greatly overcome by a divinely destined delusion (moha). And women, in turn, are similarly attracted to men; this is directly evident and witnessed by the world.'
अत्र मे संशयस्तीव्रो हृदि संपरिवर्तते ।
कथमासां नराः सङ्गं कुर्वते कुरुनन्दन ।
स्त्रियो वा तेषु रज्यन्ते विरज्यन्तेऽथ वा पुनः ॥२॥
2. atra me saṁśayastīvro hṛdi saṁparivartate ,
kathamāsāṁ narāḥ saṅgaṁ kurvate kurunandana ,
striyo vā teṣu rajyante virajyante'tha vā punaḥ.
2. atra me saṃśayaḥ tīvraḥ hṛdi
saṃparivartate katham āsām narāḥ saṅgam
kurvate kurunandana striyaḥ vā teṣu
rajyante virajyante atha vā punaḥ
2. atra me tīvraḥ saṃśayaḥ hṛdi
saṃparivartate he kurunandana katham narāḥ
āsām saṅgam kurvate vā striyaḥ teṣu
rajyante atha vā punaḥ virajyante
2. Here, a fierce doubt churns in my heart, O Kuru's delight: how do men associate with these women? And do women become attached to those men, or do they again become detached from them?
इति ताः पुरुषव्याघ्र कथं शक्याः स्म रक्षितुम् ।
प्रमदाः पुरुषेणेह तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥३॥
3. iti tāḥ puruṣavyāghra kathaṁ śakyāḥ sma rakṣitum ,
pramadāḥ puruṣeṇeha tanme vyākhyātumarhasi.
3. iti tāḥ puruṣavyāghra katham śakyāḥ sma rakṣitum
pramadāḥ puruṣeṇa iha tat me vyākhyātum arhasi
3. iti he puruṣavyāghra katham tāḥ pramadāḥ puruṣeṇa
iha śakyāḥ sma rakṣitum tat me vyākhyātum arhasi
3. Therefore, O tiger among men, how can these passionate women be protected by a man here? You ought to explain that to me.
एता हि मयमायाभिर्वञ्चयन्तीह मानवान् ।
न चासां मुच्यते कश्चित्पुरुषो हस्तमागतः ।
गावो नवतृणानीव गृह्णन्त्येव नवान्नवान् ॥४॥
4. etā hi mayamāyābhirvañcayantīha mānavān ,
na cāsāṁ mucyate kaścitpuruṣo hastamāgataḥ ,
gāvo navatṛṇānīva gṛhṇantyeva navānnavān.
4. etāḥ hi mayamāyābhiḥ vañcayanti iha
mānavān na ca āsām mucyate kaścit
puruṣaḥ hastam āgataḥ gāvaḥ
navatṛṇāni iva gṛhṇanti eva navān navān
4. hi etāḥ iha mayamāyābhiḥ mānavān
vañcayanti ca āsām hastam āgataḥ
kaścit puruṣaḥ na mucyate iva gāvaḥ
navatṛṇāni gṛhṇanti eva navān navān
4. Indeed, these women here deceive human beings with the (māyā) of Maya (the demon). No man who has fallen into their grasp can escape them. Just like cows, they continually seize new and fresh blades of grass (new men).
शम्बरस्य च या माया या माया नमुचेरपि ।
बलेः कुम्भीनसेश्चैव सर्वास्ता योषितो विदुः ॥५॥
5. śambarasya ca yā māyā yā māyā namucerapi ,
baleḥ kumbhīnaseścaiva sarvāstā yoṣito viduḥ.
5. śambarasya ca yā māyā yā māyā namuceḥ api baleḥ
kumbhīnaseḥ ca eva sarvāḥ tāḥ yoṣitaḥ viduḥ
5. ca yā śambarasya māyā ca yā namuceḥ api māyā ca
eva baleḥ kumbhīnaseḥ tāḥ sarvāḥ yoṣitaḥ viduḥ
5. Whatever (māyā) Shambara possessed, and whatever (māyā) Namuchi also had, and likewise those of Bali and Kumbhīnasi - all these (powers), women indeed know (and possess).
हसन्तं प्रहसन्त्येता रुदन्तं प्ररुदन्ति च ।
अप्रियं प्रियवाक्यैश्च गृह्णते कालयोगतः ॥६॥
6. hasantaṁ prahasantyetā rudantaṁ prarudanti ca ,
apriyaṁ priyavākyaiśca gṛhṇate kālayogataḥ.
6. hasantam prahasanti etāḥ rudantam prarudanti
ca apriyam priyavākyaiḥ ca gṛhṇate kālayogataḥ
6. etāḥ hasantam prahasanti rudantam ca prarudanti
ca apriyam priyavākyaiḥ kālayogataḥ gṛhṇate
6. These women laugh when someone laughs, and cry when someone cries. They accept even unpleasant things with pleasant words, adapting to the demands of the moment.
उशना वेद यच्छास्त्रं यच्च वेद बृहस्पतिः ।
स्त्रीबुद्ध्या न विशिष्येते ताः स्म रक्ष्याः कथं नरैः ॥७॥
7. uśanā veda yacchāstraṁ yacca veda bṛhaspatiḥ ,
strībuddhyā na viśiṣyete tāḥ sma rakṣyāḥ kathaṁ naraiḥ.
7. uśanā veda yat śāstram yat ca veda bṛhaspatiḥ
strībuddhyā na viśiṣyete tāḥ sma rakṣyāḥ katham naraiḥ
7. uśanā yat śāstram veda yat ca bṛhaspatiḥ veda
strībuddhyā na viśiṣyete tāḥ katham naraiḥ rakṣyāḥ sma
7. The knowledge (śāstram) that Uśanā possesses, and what Bṛhaspati knows, these do not surpass a woman's intellect (strībuddhi). How then can such women indeed be protected by men?
अनृतं सत्यमित्याहुः सत्यं चापि तथानृतम् ।
इति यास्ताः कथं वीर संरक्ष्याः पुरुषैरिह ॥८॥
8. anṛtaṁ satyamityāhuḥ satyaṁ cāpi tathānṛtam ,
iti yāstāḥ kathaṁ vīra saṁrakṣyāḥ puruṣairiha.
8. anṛtam satyam iti āhuḥ satyam ca api tathā anṛtam
iti yāḥ tāḥ katham vīra saṃrakṣyāḥ puruṣaiḥ iha
8. anṛtam satyam iti āhuḥ satyam ca api tathā anṛtam
iti yāḥ tāḥ vīra katham iha puruṣaiḥ saṃrakṣyāḥ
8. They declare untruth to be truth, and truth to be untruth. O hero, how can such women, who are like this, be protected by men in this world?
स्त्रीणां बुद्ध्युपनिष्कर्षादर्थशास्त्राणि शत्रुहन् ।
बृहस्पतिप्रभृतिभिर्मन्ये सद्भिः कृतानि वै ॥९॥
9. strīṇāṁ buddhyupaniṣkarṣādarthaśāstrāṇi śatruhan ,
bṛhaspatiprabhṛtibhirmanye sadbhiḥ kṛtāni vai.
9. strīṇām buddhyupaniṣkarṣāt arthaśāstrāṇi śatruhan
bṛhaspatiprabhṛtibhiḥ manye sadbhiḥ kṛtāni vai
9. śatruhan strīṇām buddhyupaniṣkarṣāt arthaśāstrāṇi
bṛhaspatiprabhṛtibhiḥ sadbhiḥ kṛtāni vai manye
9. O slayer of enemies, I believe that treatises on worldly affairs (arthaśāstrāṇi) were indeed composed by good men, led by Bṛhaspati, specifically because of the profound analytical discernment (buddhyupaniṣkarṣa) of women.
संपूज्यमानाः पुरुषैर्विकुर्वन्ति मनो नृषु ।
अपास्ताश्च तथा राजन्विकुर्वन्ति मनः स्त्रियः ॥१०॥
10. saṁpūjyamānāḥ puruṣairvikurvanti mano nṛṣu ,
apāstāśca tathā rājanvikurvanti manaḥ striyaḥ.
10. sampūjyamānāḥ puruṣaiḥ vikurvanti manaḥ nṛṣu
apāstāḥ ca tathā rājan vikurvanti manaḥ striyaḥ
10. striyaḥ sampūjyamānāḥ puruṣaiḥ manaḥ nṛṣu
vikurvanti ca tathā rājan apāstāḥ manaḥ vikurvanti
10. When women are honored by men, they corrupt the minds of men. And similarly, O King, when women are rejected, they also corrupt minds.
कस्ताः शक्तो रक्षितुं स्यादिति मे संशयो महान् ।
तन्मे ब्रूहि महाबाहो कुरूणां वंशवर्धन ॥११॥
11. kastāḥ śakto rakṣituṁ syāditi me saṁśayo mahān ,
tanme brūhi mahābāho kurūṇāṁ vaṁśavardhana.
11. kaḥ tāḥ śaktaḥ rakṣitum syāt iti me saṃśayaḥ
mahān tat me brūhi mahābāho kurūṇām vaṃśavardhana
11. kaḥ tāḥ rakṣitum śaktaḥ syāt iti me mahān saṃśayaḥ
tat me brūhi mahābāho kurūṇām vaṃśavardhana
11. Who would be capable of protecting them? This is my great doubt. Therefore, tell me, O mighty-armed one, O enhancer of the Kuru lineage.
यदि शक्या कुरुश्रेष्ठ रक्षा तासां कथंचन ।
कर्तुं वा कृतपूर्वा वा तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. yadi śakyā kuruśreṣṭha rakṣā tāsāṁ kathaṁcana ,
kartuṁ vā kṛtapūrvā vā tanme vyākhyātumarhasi.
12. yadi śakyā kuruśreṣṭha rakṣā tāsām kathaṃcana
kartum vā kṛtapūrvā vā tat me vyākhyātum arhasi
12. yadi kuruśreṣṭha tāsām rakṣā kathaṃcana kartum
vā kṛtapūrvā vā śakyā tat me vyākhyātum arhasi
12. If, O best of the Kurus, their protection is somehow possible, whether it is to be undertaken or has been accomplished previously, you ought to explain that to me.
