युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
साम्ना वापि प्रदाने वा ज्यायः किं भवतो मतम् ।
प्रब्रूहि भरतश्रेष्ठ यदत्र व्यतिरिच्यते ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
sāmnā vāpi pradāne vā jyāyaḥ kiṁ bhavato matam ,
prabrūhi bharataśreṣṭha yadatra vyatiricyate.

bhavataḥ matam prabrūhi bharataśreṣṭha yat atra vyatiricyate
1. Yudhishthira said, "Among conciliation and giving gifts, which do you consider superior? O best of Bharatas, please tell me what is more excellent here."
भीष्म उवाच ।
साम्ना प्रसाद्यते कश्चिद्दानेन च तथापरः ।
पुरुषः प्रकृतिं ज्ञात्वा तयोरेकतरं भजेत् ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sāmnā prasādyate kaściddānena ca tathāparaḥ ,
puruṣaḥ prakṛtiṁ jñātvā tayorekataraṁ bhajet.
2. bhīṣma uvāca sāmnā prasādyate kaścit dānena ca tathā
aparaḥ puruṣaḥ prakṛtim jñātvā tayoḥ ekataram bhajet
2. Bhishma said, "Some are conciliated by gentle means, and others by giving. A person should understand the intrinsic nature (prakṛti) of individuals and then apply either of these two methods."
गुणांस्तु शृणु मे राजन्सान्त्वस्य भरतर्षभ ।
दारुणान्यपि भूतानि सान्त्वेनाराधयेद्यथा ॥३॥
3. guṇāṁstu śṛṇu me rājansāntvasya bharatarṣabha ,
dāruṇānyapi bhūtāni sāntvenārādhayedyathā.
3. guṇān tu śṛṇu me rājan sāntvasya bharatarṣabha
dāruṇāni api bhūtāni sāntvena ārādhayet yathā
3. O King, O best of Bharatas, listen to me concerning the merits of conciliation, by which even terrible beings can be appeased.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
गृहीत्वा रक्षसा मुक्तो द्विजातिः कानने यथा ॥४॥
4. atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
gṛhītvā rakṣasā mukto dvijātiḥ kānane yathā.
4. atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam purātanam
gṛhītvā rakṣasā muktaḥ dvijātiḥ kānane yathā
4. Regarding this, they narrate an ancient story (itihāsa) about how a twice-born (dvijāti), after being captured by a demon (rakṣas), was released in the forest.
कश्चित्तु बुद्धिसंपन्नो ब्राह्मणो विजने वने ।
गृहीतः कृच्छ्रमापन्नो रक्षसा भक्षयिष्यता ॥५॥
5. kaścittu buddhisaṁpanno brāhmaṇo vijane vane ,
gṛhītaḥ kṛcchramāpanno rakṣasā bhakṣayiṣyatā.
5. kaścit tu buddhisampannaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ vijane vane
gṛhītaḥ kṛcchram āpannaḥ rakṣasā bhakṣayiṣyatā
5. kaścit buddhisampannaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ vijane vane
bhakṣayiṣyatā rakṣasā gṛhītaḥ kṛcchram āpannaḥ tu
5. A certain intelligent brahmin (brāhmaṇa), in a desolate forest, was seized by a demon who was about to devour him, and thus found himself in great distress.
स बुद्धिश्रुतसंपन्नस्तं दृष्ट्वातीव भीषणम् ।
सामैवास्मिन्प्रयुयुजे न मुमोह न विव्यथे ॥६॥
6. sa buddhiśrutasaṁpannastaṁ dṛṣṭvātīva bhīṣaṇam ,
sāmaivāsminprayuyuje na mumoha na vivyathe.
6. saḥ buddhiśrutasampannaḥ tam dṛṣṭvā atīva bhīṣaṇam
sāma eva asmin prayuyuje na mumoha na vivyathe
6. saḥ buddhiśrutasampannaḥ atīva bhīṣaṇam tam dṛṣṭvā
asmin sāma eva prayuyuje na mumoha na vivyathe
6. That brahmin, endowed with intelligence and scriptural knowledge, seeing the demon who was exceedingly terrifying, employed conciliation (sāma) towards him. He neither became bewildered nor distressed.
रक्षस्तु वाचा संपूज्य प्रश्नं पप्रच्छ तं द्विजम् ।
मोक्ष्यसे ब्रूहि मे प्रश्नं केनास्मि हरिणः कृशः ॥७॥
7. rakṣastu vācā saṁpūjya praśnaṁ papraccha taṁ dvijam ,
mokṣyase brūhi me praśnaṁ kenāsmi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
7. rakṣaḥ tu vācā sampūjya praśnam papraccha tam dvijam
mokṣyase brūhi me praśnam kena asmi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
7. rakṣaḥ tu vācā sampūjya tam dvijam praśnam papraccha
mokṣyase brūhi me praśnam kena asmi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
7. The demon, however, honoring that brahmin (dvija) with words, asked him a question: "You will be released. Answer my question: by what means am I a lean deer?"
मुहूर्तमथ संचिन्त्य ब्राह्मणस्तस्य रक्षसः ।
आभिर्गाथाभिरव्यग्रः प्रश्नं प्रतिजगाद ह ॥८॥
8. muhūrtamatha saṁcintya brāhmaṇastasya rakṣasaḥ ,
ābhirgāthābhiravyagraḥ praśnaṁ pratijagāda ha.
8. muhūrtam atha saṃcintya brāhmaṇaḥ tasya rakṣasaḥ
ābhiḥ gāthābhiḥ avyagraḥ praśnam pratijagāda ha
8. atha muhūrtam saṃcintya avyagraḥ brāhmaṇaḥ tasya
rakṣasaḥ praśnam ābhiḥ gāthābhiḥ pratijagāda ha
8. Then, having deliberated for a moment, the brahmin (brāhmaṇa), calmly, answered that demon's question with these verses.
विदेशस्थो विलोकस्थो विना नूनं सुहृज्जनैः ।
विषयानतुलान्भुङ्क्षे तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥९॥
9. videśastho vilokastho vinā nūnaṁ suhṛjjanaiḥ ,
viṣayānatulānbhuṅkṣe tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
9. videśasthaḥ vilokasthaḥ vinā nūnam suhṛjjanaiḥ
viṣayān atulān bhuṅkṣe tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
9. nūnam suhṛjjanaiḥ vinā videśasthaḥ vilokasthaḥ
atulān viṣayān bhuṅkṣe tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
9. Surely, you are stationed in a foreign land, among strangers, without your friends. You enjoy incomparable pleasures. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
नूनं मित्राणि ते रक्षः साधूपचरितान्यपि ।
स्वदोषादपरज्यन्ते तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१०॥
10. nūnaṁ mitrāṇi te rakṣaḥ sādhūpacaritānyapi ,
svadoṣādaparajyante tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
10. nūnam mitrāṇi te rakṣaḥ sādhu upacaritāni api
svadoṣāt aparajyante tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
10. rakṣaḥ nūnam te mitrāṇi sādhu upacaritāni api
svadoṣāt aparajyante tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
10. O demon, surely your friends, even though properly attended to, become estranged due to their own faults. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
धनैश्वर्याधिकाः स्तब्धास्त्वद्गुणैः परमावराः ।
अवजानन्ति नूनं त्वां तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥११॥
11. dhanaiśvaryādhikāḥ stabdhāstvadguṇaiḥ paramāvarāḥ ,
avajānanti nūnaṁ tvāṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
11. dhanaiśvaryādhikāḥ stabdhāḥ tvadguṇaiḥ paramāvarāḥ
avajānanti nūnam tvām tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
11. nūnam dhanaiśvaryādhikāḥ stabdhāḥ tvadguṇaiḥ
paramāvarāḥ tvām avajānanti tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
11. Surely, those who are superior in wealth and power, arrogant, and supremely inferior in virtue compared to your qualities, disrespect you. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
गुणवान्विगुणानन्यान्नूनं पश्यसि सत्कृतान् ।
प्राज्ञोऽप्राज्ञान्विनीतात्मा तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१२॥
12. guṇavānviguṇānanyānnūnaṁ paśyasi satkṛtān ,
prājño'prājñānvinītātmā tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
12. guṇavān viguṇān anyān nūnam paśyasi satkṛtān
prājñaḥ aprājñān vinītātmā tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
12. guṇavān prājñaḥ vinītātmā nūnam viguṇān anyān
satkṛtān aprājñān paśyasi tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
12. You, who are virtuous, surely see other people who are devoid of qualities being honored. You, who are wise and possess a disciplined self (ātman), [see] the unwise [being honored]. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
अवृत्त्या क्लिश्यमानोऽपि वृत्त्युपायान्विगर्हयन् ।
माहात्म्याद्व्यथसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१३॥
13. avṛttyā kliśyamāno'pi vṛttyupāyānvigarhayan ,
māhātmyādvyathase nūnaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
13. avṛttyā kliśyamānaḥ api vṛttyupāyān vigarhayan
māhātmyāt vyathase nūnam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
13. avṛttyā kliśyamānaḥ api vṛttyupāyān vigarhayan
nūnam māhātmyāt vyathase tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
13. Though you suffer from a lack of livelihood, you reject the means to obtain it. Indeed, you are distressed due to your magnanimity. Therefore, you are thin like a deer.
संपीड्यात्मानमार्यत्वात्त्वया कश्चिदुपस्कृतः ।
जितं त्वां मन्यते साधो तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१४॥
14. saṁpīḍyātmānamāryatvāttvayā kaścidupaskṛtaḥ ,
jitaṁ tvāṁ manyate sādho tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
14. saṃpīḍya ātmānam āryatvāt tvayā kaścit upaskṛtaḥ
jitam tvām manyate sādho tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
14. sādho tvayā āryatvāt ātmānam saṃpīḍya kaścit
upaskṛtaḥ tvām jitam manyate tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
14. O virtuous one, because you have troubled yourself due to your noble nature, someone has been benefited. That person considers you defeated, and therefore, you are thin like a deer.
क्लिश्यमानान्विमार्गेषु कामक्रोधावृतात्मनः ।
मन्ये नु ध्यायसि जनांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१५॥
15. kliśyamānānvimārgeṣu kāmakrodhāvṛtātmanaḥ ,
manye nu dhyāyasi janāṁstenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
15. kliśyamānān vimārgeṣu kāmakrodhāvṛtātmanaḥ
manye nu dhyāyasi janān tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
15. manye nu kāmakrodhāvṛtātmanaḥ vimārgeṣu
kliśyamānān janān dhyāyasi tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
15. I think you meditate on people who are suffering on wrong paths, whose inner beings (ātman) are enveloped by desire and anger. Therefore, you are thin like a deer.
प्राज्ञैः संभावितो नूनं नप्राज्ञैरुपसंहितः ।
ह्रीमानमर्षी दुर्वृत्तैस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१६॥
16. prājñaiḥ saṁbhāvito nūnaṁ naprājñairupasaṁhitaḥ ,
hrīmānamarṣī durvṛttaistenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
16. prājñaiḥ saṃbhāvitaḥ nūnam na aprājñaiḥ upasaṃhitaḥ
hrīmān amarṣī durvṛttaiḥ tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
16. nūnam prājñaiḥ saṃbhāvitaḥ aprājñaiḥ na upasaṃhitaḥ
hrīmān amarṣī durvṛttaiḥ tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
16. Indeed, you are respected by the wise, but not associated with the unwise. You are modest and indignant towards wicked people. Therefore, you are thin like a deer.
नूनं मित्रमुखः शत्रुः कश्चिदार्यवदाचरन् ।
वञ्चयित्वा गतस्त्वां वै तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१७॥
17. nūnaṁ mitramukhaḥ śatruḥ kaścidāryavadācaran ,
vañcayitvā gatastvāṁ vai tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
17. nūnam mitramukhaḥ śatruḥ kaścit āryavat ācaran
vañcayitvā gataḥ tvām vai tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
17. hariṇaḥ nūnam kaścit mitramukhaḥ āryavat ācaran
śatruḥ tvām vañcayitvā gataḥ vai tena tvam kṛśaḥ asi
17. O deer, certainly some enemy, appearing friendly and behaving like a noble person, has indeed deceived you and gone away. That is why you are emaciated.
प्रकाशार्थगतिर्नूनं रहस्यकुशलः कृती ।
तज्ज्ञैर्न पूज्यसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१८॥
18. prakāśārthagatirnūnaṁ rahasyakuśalaḥ kṛtī ,
tajjñairna pūjyase nūnaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
18. prakāśārthagatiḥ nūnam rahasyakuśalaḥ kṛtī
tajñaiḥ na pūjyase nūnam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
18. hariṇaḥ nūnam tvam prakāśārthagatiḥ (asi) nūnam rahasyakuśalaḥ
kṛtī (asi) tajñaiḥ na pūjyase tena tvam kṛśaḥ asi
18. O deer, you are certainly one whose intentions are evident, and truly a skilled person adept in hidden knowledge. Yet, you are not honored by experts. That is why you are emaciated.
असत्स्वभिनिविष्टेषु ब्रुवतो मुक्तसंशयम् ।
गुणास्ते न विराजन्ते तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥१९॥
19. asatsvabhiniviṣṭeṣu bruvato muktasaṁśayam ,
guṇāste na virājante tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
19. asatsu abhiniviṣṭeṣu bruvataḥ muktasaṃśayam
guṇāḥ te na virājante tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
19. hariṇaḥ asatsu abhiniviṣṭeṣu (satsu) muktasaṃśayam
bruvataḥ (api) te guṇāḥ na virājante tena tvam kṛśaḥ asi
19. O deer, even when you speak with certainty among those devoted to unrighteousness, your virtues do not shine. That is why you are emaciated.
धनबुद्धिश्रुतैर्हीनः केवलं तेजसान्वितः ।
महत्प्रार्थयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२०॥
20. dhanabuddhiśrutairhīnaḥ kevalaṁ tejasānvitaḥ ,
mahatprārthayase nūnaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
20. dhanabuddhiśrutaiḥ hīnaḥ kevalam tejasā anvitaḥ
mahat prārthayase nūnam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
20. hariṇaḥ tvam dhanabuddhiśrutaiḥ hīnaḥ (asi) kevalam tejasā
anvitaḥ (asi) nūnam mahat prārthayase tena tvam kṛśaḥ asi
20. O deer, you are devoid of wealth, intellect, and knowledge, and endowed only with radiance. You certainly desire great things. That is why you are emaciated.
तपःप्रणिहितात्मानं मन्ये त्वारण्यकाङ्क्षिणम् ।
बन्धुवर्गो न गृह्णाति तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२१॥
21. tapaḥpraṇihitātmānaṁ manye tvāraṇyakāṅkṣiṇam ,
bandhuvargo na gṛhṇāti tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
21. tapaḥpraṇihitātmānam manye tu āraṇyakākṣiṇam
bandhuvargaḥ na gṛhṇāti tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
21. manye tu tapaḥpraṇihitātmānam āraṇyakākṣiṇam
bandhuvargaḥ na gṛhṇāti tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
21. I believe you are one whose inner being (ātman) is devoted to asceticism (tapas) and who longs for the forest. Your kinfolk do not accept you. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
नूनमर्थवतां मध्ये तव वाक्यमनुत्तमम् ।
न भाति कालेऽभिहितं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२२॥
22. nūnamarthavatāṁ madhye tava vākyamanuttamam ,
na bhāti kāle'bhihitaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
22. nūnam arthavatām madhye tava vākyam anuttamam
na bhāti kāle abhihitam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
22. nūnam tava anuttamam vākyam arthavatām madhye
kāle abhihitam na bhāti tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
22. Surely, your unexceptional speech does not shine among people of substance, even when it is uttered at the right time. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
दृढपूर्वश्रुतं मूर्खं कुपितं हृदयप्रियम् ।
अनुनेतुं न शक्नोषि तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२३॥
23. dṛḍhapūrvaśrutaṁ mūrkhaṁ kupitaṁ hṛdayapriyam ,
anunetuṁ na śaknoṣi tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
23. dṛḍhapūrvaśrutam mūrkham kupitam hṛdayapriyam
anunetum na śaknoṣi tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
23. dṛḍhapūrvaśrutam mūrkham kupitam hṛdayapriyam
anunetum na śaknoṣi tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
23. You are unable to appease a foolish, angry person who is stubborn in his past knowledge, even though he is dear to your heart. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
नूनमासंजयित्वा ते कृत्ये कस्मिंश्चिदीप्सिते ।
कश्चिदर्थयतेऽत्यर्थं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२४॥
24. nūnamāsaṁjayitvā te kṛtye kasmiṁścidīpsite ,
kaścidarthayate'tyarthaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
24. nūnam āsanjayitva te kṛtye kasmiṁścit īpsite
kaścit arthayate atyartham tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
24. nūnam kaścit te kasmiṁścit īpsite kṛtye āsanjayitva
atyartham arthayate tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
24. Surely, someone, having engaged you in a particular desired task, excessively importunes you. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
नूनं त्वा स्वगुणापेक्षं पूजयानं सुहृद्ध्रुवम् ।
मयार्थ इति जानाति तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२५॥
25. nūnaṁ tvā svaguṇāpekṣaṁ pūjayānaṁ suhṛddhruvam ,
mayārtha iti jānāti tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
25. nūnam tvā svaguṇāpekṣam pūjayānam suhṛt dhruvam
| mayā arthaḥ iti jānāti tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
25. nūnam svaguṇāpekṣam dhruvam suhṛt pūjayānam tvā
mayā arthaḥ iti jānāti tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
25. Surely, you, honoring a steadfast friend while expecting something in return for your own virtues, are known (by that friend, who thinks) 'this one is for my purpose.' Therefore, you are as emaciated as a deer.
अन्तर्गतमभिप्रायं न नूनं लज्जयेच्छसि ।
विवक्तुं प्राप्तिशैथिल्यात्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२६॥
26. antargatamabhiprāyaṁ na nūnaṁ lajjayecchasi ,
vivaktuṁ prāptiśaithilyāttenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
26. antargatam abhiprāyam na nūnam lajjayā icchasi |
vivaktum prāptiśaithilyāt tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
26. nūnam antargatam abhiprāyam lajjayā prāptiśaithilyāt
vivaktum na icchasi tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
26. Surely, you certainly do not wish to speak out your hidden intention, either due to shame or due to the difficulty in achieving it. Therefore, you are as emaciated as a deer.
नानाबुद्धिरुचीँल्लोके मनुष्यान्नूनमिच्छसि ।
ग्रहीतुं स्वगुणैः सर्वांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२७॥
27. nānābuddhirucīँlloke manuṣyānnūnamicchasi ,
grahītuṁ svaguṇaiḥ sarvāṁstenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
27. nānābuddhirucīn loke manuṣyān nūnam icchasi |
grahītum svaguṇaiḥ sarvān tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
27. nūnam loke nānābuddhirucīn sarvān manuṣyān
svaguṇaiḥ grahītum icchasi tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
27. Surely, you wish to win over all people in the world, who have various intellects and tastes, by your own qualities. Therefore, you are as emaciated as a deer.
अविद्वान्भीरुरल्पार्थो विद्याविक्रमदानजम् ।
यशः प्रार्थयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२८॥
28. avidvānbhīruralpārtho vidyāvikramadānajam ,
yaśaḥ prārthayase nūnaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
28. avidvān bhīruḥ alpārthaḥ vidyāvikramadānajam |
yaśaḥ prārthayase nūnam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
28. nūnam avidvān bhīruḥ alpārthaḥ vidyāvikramadānajam
yaśaḥ prārthayase tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
28. Surely, you, who are ignorant, fearful, and insignificant, seek fame born from knowledge, valor, and generosity. Therefore, you are as emaciated as a deer.
चिराभिलषितं किंचित्फलमप्राप्तमेव ते ।
कृतमन्यैरपहृतं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥२९॥
29. cirābhilaṣitaṁ kiṁcitphalamaprāptameva te ,
kṛtamanyairapahṛtaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
29. cirābhilaṣitam kiñcit phalam aprāptam eva te
kṛtam anyaiḥ apahṛtam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
29. te cirābhilaṣitam kiñcit phalam eva aprāptam
anyaiḥ kṛtam apahṛtam tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
29. Your long-cherished goal was not achieved. What was accomplished by others was taken away from you. Therefore, you are emaciated, like a deer.
नूनमात्मकृतं दोषमपश्यन्किंचिदात्मनि ।
अकारणेऽभिशस्तोऽसि तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥३०॥
30. nūnamātmakṛtaṁ doṣamapaśyankiṁcidātmani ,
akāraṇe'bhiśasto'si tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
30. nūnam ātmakṛtam doṣam apaśyan kiñcit ātmani
akāraṇe abhiśastaḥ asi tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
30. nūnam ātmani ātmakṛtam kiñcit doṣam apaśyan
akāraṇe abhiśastaḥ asi tena hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
30. Surely, not seeing any self-inflicted flaw (doṣa) within your self (ātman), you were accused without cause. Therefore, you are emaciated, like a deer.
सुहृदामप्रमत्तानामप्रमोक्ष्यार्थहानिजम् ।
दुःखमर्थगुणैर्हीनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥३१॥
31. suhṛdāmapramattānāmapramokṣyārthahānijam ,
duḥkhamarthaguṇairhīnaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
31. suhṛdām apramattānām apramokṣyārthahānijam
duḥkham arthaguṇaiḥ hīnam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
31. suhṛdām apramattānām apramokṣyārthahānijam
arthaguṇaiḥ hīnam duḥkham tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
31. The sorrow, born from the loss of wealth, unavoidable for watchful friends, and devoid of wealth's benefits, affects you. Therefore, you are emaciated, like a deer.
साधून्गृहस्थान्दृष्ट्वा च तथासाधून्वनेचरान् ।
मुक्तांश्चावसथे सक्तांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥३२॥
32. sādhūngṛhasthāndṛṣṭvā ca tathāsādhūnvanecarān ,
muktāṁścāvasathe saktāṁstenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
32. sādhūn gṛhasthān dṛṣṭvā ca tathā asādhūn vanecarān
muktān ca āvasathe saktān tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
32. sādhūn gṛhasthān ca tathā asādhūn vanecarān ca āvasathe
saktān muktān dṛṣṭvā tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ asi
32. Having seen virtuous householders, and also unvirtuous forest dwellers, and those supposedly liberated (mukta) but still attached to their abodes. Therefore, you are emaciated, like a deer.
धर्म्यमर्थं च काले च देशे चाभिहितं वचः ।
न प्रतिष्ठति ते नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥३३॥
33. dharmyamarthaṁ ca kāle ca deśe cābhihitaṁ vacaḥ ,
na pratiṣṭhati te nūnaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
33. dharmyam artham ca kāle ca deśe ca abhihitam vacaḥ
| na pratiṣṭhati te nūnam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
33. dharmyam artham ca kāle ca deśe ca abhihitam vacaḥ
te nūnam na pratiṣṭhati tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
33. A righteous objective (dharma) and words spoken at the appropriate time and place, certainly do not stand firm for you. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
दत्तानकुशलैरर्थान्मनीषी संजिजीविषुः ।
प्राप्य वर्तयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥३४॥
34. dattānakuśalairarthānmanīṣī saṁjijīviṣuḥ ,
prāpya vartayase nūnaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
34. dattān akuśalaiḥ arthān manīṣī saṃjijīviṣuḥ
prāpya vartayase nūnam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
34. manīṣī saṃjijīviṣuḥ tvam akuśalaiḥ dattān arthān
prāpya nūnam vartayase tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
34. You, a wise (manīṣī) person desirous of living (saṃjijīviṣuḥ), surely survive by accepting wealth (artha) that was given by the incompetent. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
पापान्विवर्धतो दृष्ट्वा कल्याणांश्चावसीदतः ।
ध्रुवं मृगयसे योग्यं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥३५॥
35. pāpānvivardhato dṛṣṭvā kalyāṇāṁścāvasīdataḥ ,
dhruvaṁ mṛgayase yogyaṁ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
35. pāpān vivardhataḥ dṛṣṭvā kalyāṇān ca avasīdataḥ
| dhruvam mṛgayase yogyam tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
35. pāpān vivardhataḥ kalyāṇān ca avasīdataḥ dṛṣṭvā
tvam dhruvam yogyam mṛgayase tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
35. Having observed the wicked flourishing and the virtuous declining, you certainly seek what is proper. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
परस्परविरुद्धानां प्रियं नूनं चिकीर्षसि ।
सुहृदामविरोधेन तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥३६॥
36. parasparaviruddhānāṁ priyaṁ nūnaṁ cikīrṣasi ,
suhṛdāmavirodhena tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
36. parasparaviruddhānām priyam nūnam cikīrṣasi
| suhṛdām avirodhena tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
36. nūnam tvam parasparaviruddhānām priyam suhṛdām
avirodhena ca cikīrṣasi tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
36. You certainly wish to do what is pleasing to those who are mutually opposed, while also avoiding conflict among your friends. Therefore, you are emaciated like a deer.
श्रोत्रियांश्च विकर्मस्थान्प्राज्ञांश्चाप्यजितेन्द्रियान् ।
मन्येऽनुध्यायसि जनांस्तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥३७॥
37. śrotriyāṁśca vikarmasthānprājñāṁścāpyajitendriyān ,
manye'nudhyāyasi janāṁstenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
37. śrotriyān ca vikarmasthān prājñān ca api ajitendriyān
manye anudhyāyasi janān tena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
37. I believe you constantly ponder upon Vedic scholars (śrotriya) who engage in unrighteous (vikarma) deeds, and also upon wise (prājña) individuals whose senses are uncontrolled. Because of this, you are emaciated like a deer.
एवं संपूजितं रक्षो विप्रं तं प्रत्यपूजयत् ।
सखायमकरोच्चैनं संयोज्यार्थैर्मुमोच ह ॥३८॥
38. evaṁ saṁpūjitaṁ rakṣo vipraṁ taṁ pratyapūjayat ,
sakhāyamakaroccainaṁ saṁyojyārthairmumoca ha.
38. evam sampūjitam rakṣaḥ vipram tam prati apūjayat
sakhāyam akarot ca enam saṃyojya arthaiḥ mumoca ha
38. Having thus been duly honored, the rākṣasa honored that Brahmin in return. He made him a friend, and after providing him with possessions, indeed released him.
