सुपर्ण उवाच ।
अनुशिष्टोऽस्मि देवेन गालवाज्ञातयोनिना ।
ब्रूहि कामनुसंयामि द्रष्टुं प्रथमतो दिशम् ॥१॥
1. suparṇa uvāca ,
anuśiṣṭo'smi devena gālavājñātayoninā ,
brūhi kāmanusaṁyāmi draṣṭuṁ prathamato diśam.

| brūhi kām anusaṃyāmi draṣṭuṃ prathamataḥ diśam
1. Suparṇa said, "I have been instructed by the god Gālava, whose origin (yoni) is unknown. Tell me, which direction should I first go to behold?"
पूर्वां वा दक्षिणां वाहमथ वा पश्चिमां दिशम् ।
उत्तरां वा द्विजश्रेष्ठ कुतो गच्छामि गालव ॥२॥
2. pūrvāṁ vā dakṣiṇāṁ vāhamatha vā paścimāṁ diśam ,
uttarāṁ vā dvijaśreṣṭha kuto gacchāmi gālava.
2. pūrvām vā dakṣiṇām vā aham atha vā paścimām diśam
| uttarām vā dvijaśreṣṭha kutaḥ gacchāmi gālava
2. "O best among the twice-born (dvijāśreṣṭha), O Gālava, should I go to the eastern, southern, or western direction, or to the northern? From where should I proceed?"
यस्यामुदयते पूर्वं सर्वलोकप्रभावनः ।
सविता यत्र संध्यायां साध्यानां वर्तते तपः ॥३॥
3. yasyāmudayate pūrvaṁ sarvalokaprabhāvanaḥ ,
savitā yatra saṁdhyāyāṁ sādhyānāṁ vartate tapaḥ.
3. yasyām udayate pūrvam sarvalokaprabhāvanaḥ |
savitā yatra saṃdhyāyām sādhyānām vartate tapaḥ
3. (Tell me that direction) "in which the sun (savitā), the illuminator of all worlds, first rises; and where, at twilight, the austerities (tapas) of the Sādhyas are performed."
यस्यां पूर्वं मतिर्जाता यया व्याप्तमिदं जगत् ।
चक्षुषी यत्र धर्मस्य यत्र चैष प्रतिष्ठितः ॥४॥
4. yasyāṁ pūrvaṁ matirjātā yayā vyāptamidaṁ jagat ,
cakṣuṣī yatra dharmasya yatra caiṣa pratiṣṭhitaḥ.
4. yasyām pūrvam matiḥ jātā yayā vyāptam idam jagat |
cakṣuṣī yatra dharmasya yatra ca eṣaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ
4. (Tell me that direction) "in which wisdom (mati) first arose, by which this universe (jagat) is pervaded. It is where the two eyes of natural law (dharma) are, and where natural law (dharma) itself is established."
हुतं यतोमुखैर्हव्यं सर्पते सर्वतोदिशम् ।
एतद्द्वारं द्विजश्रेष्ठ दिवसस्य तथाध्वनः ॥५॥
5. hutaṁ yatomukhairhavyaṁ sarpate sarvatodiśam ,
etaddvāraṁ dvijaśreṣṭha divasasya tathādhvanaḥ.
5. hutam yatomukhaiḥ havyam sarpate sarvatodiśam
etat dvāram dvijaśreṣṭha divasasya tathā adhvanaḥ
5. O best among the twice-born (dvijaśreṣṭha), this [direction] is the gateway of the day and of the path, because from its mouths (referring to the fire in which oblations are offered) the sacrificial offerings (havya) spread in all directions.
यत्र पूर्वं प्रसूता वै दाक्षायण्यः प्रजाः स्त्रियः ।
यस्यां दिशि प्रवृद्धाश्च कश्यपस्यात्मसंभवाः ॥६॥
6. yatra pūrvaṁ prasūtā vai dākṣāyaṇyaḥ prajāḥ striyaḥ ,
yasyāṁ diśi pravṛddhāśca kaśyapasyātmasaṁbhavāḥ.
6. yatra pūrvam prasūtā vai dākṣāyaṇyaḥ prajāḥ striyaḥ
yasyām diśi pravṛddhāḥ ca kaśyapasya ātmasaṃbhavāḥ
6. It is indeed in the eastern (pūrvaṃ) direction where the daughters of Dakṣa, who were the mothers of various beings, were born, and where the children (ātmasaṃbhavāḥ) of Kaśyapa flourished.
यतोमूला सुराणां श्रीर्यत्र शक्रोऽभ्यषिच्यत ।
सुरराज्येन विप्रर्षे देवैश्चात्र तपश्चितम् ॥७॥
7. yatomūlā surāṇāṁ śrīryatra śakro'bhyaṣicyata ,
surarājyena viprarṣe devaiścātra tapaścitam.
7. yatomūlā surāṇām śrīḥ yatra śakraḥ abhyaṣicyata
surarājyena viprarṣe devaiḥ ca atra tapaḥ citam
7. O Brahmin sage (viprarṣe), it is in this [eastern direction] that the prosperity (śrī) of the gods has its root, where Indra was consecrated with the sovereignty of the gods, and where the gods performed (tapas) austerities.
एतस्मात्कारणाद्ब्रह्मन्पूर्वेत्येषा दिगुच्यते ।
यस्मात्पूर्वतरे काले पूर्वमेषावृता सुरैः ॥८॥
8. etasmātkāraṇādbrahmanpūrvetyeṣā digucyate ,
yasmātpūrvatare kāle pūrvameṣāvṛtā suraiḥ.
8. etasmāt kāraṇāt brahman pūrvā iti eṣā dik ucyate
yasmāt pūrvatare kāle pūrvam eṣā āvṛtā suraiḥ
8. O Brahmin (brahman), for this reason, this direction is called 'Eastern' (pūrvā), because in ancient times, this [direction] was inhabited by the gods.
अत एव च पूर्वेषां पूर्वामाशामवेक्षताम् ।
पूर्वकार्याणि कार्याणि दैवानि सुखमीप्सता ॥९॥
9. ata eva ca pūrveṣāṁ pūrvāmāśāmavekṣatām ,
pūrvakāryāṇi kāryāṇi daivāni sukhamīpsatā.
9. ata eva ca pūrveṣām pūrvāmāśām avekṣatām
pūrvakāryāṇi kāryāṇi daivāni sukham īpsatā
9. For this very reason, and for those among the ancients who were looking towards the eastern direction, the former actions, which were divine duties, were performed by one desiring happiness.
अत्र वेदाञ्जगौ पूर्वं भगवाँल्लोकभावनः ।
अत्रैवोक्ता सवित्रासीत्सावित्री ब्रह्मवादिषु ॥१०॥
10. atra vedāñjagau pūrvaṁ bhagavāँllokabhāvanaḥ ,
atraivoktā savitrāsītsāvitrī brahmavādiṣu.
10. atra vedān ajagau pūrvam bhagavān lokabhāvanaḥ
atra eva uktā savitrā āsīt sāvitrī brahmavādiṣu
10. Here, the Blessed One (bhagavān), the creator of the worlds, previously proclaimed the Vedas. Here too, the Sāvitrī mantra was declared by Savitṛ among the expounders of brahman (brahman).
अत्र दत्तानि सूर्येण यजूंषि द्विजसत्तम ।
अत्र लब्धवरैः सोमः सुरैः क्रतुषु पीयते ॥११॥
11. atra dattāni sūryeṇa yajūṁṣi dvijasattama ,
atra labdhavaraiḥ somaḥ suraiḥ kratuṣu pīyate.
11. atra dattāni sūryeṇa yajūṃṣi dvijasattama
atra labdhavaraiḥ somaḥ suraiḥ kratuṣu pīyate
11. dvijasattama atra sūryeṇa yajūṃṣi dattāni
atra labdhavaraiḥ suraiḥ kratuṣu somaḥ pīyate
11. Here, O best among the twice-born (dvijasattama), the Yajus mantras were given by Sūrya. Here, Soma is drunk by the gods, who have obtained boons, during the Vedic rituals (kratu).
अत्र तृप्ता हुतवहाः स्वां योनिमुपभुञ्जते ।
अत्र पातालमाश्रित्य वरुणः श्रियमाप च ॥१२॥
12. atra tṛptā hutavahāḥ svāṁ yonimupabhuñjate ,
atra pātālamāśritya varuṇaḥ śriyamāpa ca.
12. atra tṛptāḥ hutavahāḥ svām yonim upabhuñjate
atra pātālam āśritya varuṇaḥ śriyam āpa ca
12. Here, the satisfied fire-gods (hutavahāḥ) enjoy their own abode (yoni). And here, Varuṇa, having taken residence in Pātāla (pātālam), attained glory (śriyam).
अत्र पूर्वं वसिष्ठस्य पौराणस्य द्विजर्षभ ।
सूतिश्चैव प्रतिष्ठा च निधनं च प्रकाशते ॥१३॥
13. atra pūrvaṁ vasiṣṭhasya paurāṇasya dvijarṣabha ,
sūtiścaiva pratiṣṭhā ca nidhanaṁ ca prakāśate.
13. atra pūrvam vasiṣṭhasya paurāṇasya dvijarṣabha
sūtiḥ ca eva pratiṣṭhā ca nidhanam ca prakāśate
13. O best among the twice-born (dvijarṣabha), here are revealed the birth, establishment, and demise of the ancient Vasiṣṭha.
ओंकारस्यात्र जायन्ते सूतयो दशतीर्दश ।
पिबन्ति मुनयो यत्र हविर्धाने स्म सोमपाः ॥१४॥
14. oṁkārasyātra jāyante sūtayo daśatīrdaśa ,
pibanti munayo yatra havirdhāne sma somapāḥ.
14. oṅkārasya atra jāyante sūtayaḥ daśatīḥ daśa
pibanti munayaḥ yatra havirdhāne sma somapāḥ
14. Here, a hundred manifestations of the sacred syllable Om (oṃkāra) arise, where the soma-drinking sages (munayaḥ) used to drink in the place for offerings (havirdhāne).
प्रोक्षिता यत्र बहवो वराहाद्या मृगा वने ।
शक्रेण यत्र भागार्थे दैवतेषु प्रकल्पिताः ॥१५॥
15. prokṣitā yatra bahavo varāhādyā mṛgā vane ,
śakreṇa yatra bhāgārthe daivateṣu prakalpitāḥ.
15. prokṣitāḥ yatra bahavaḥ varāhādyāḥ mṛgāḥ vane
śakreṇa yatra bhāgārthe daivateṣu prakalpitāḥ
15. Where many wild animals (mṛgāḥ) such as boars were consecrated in the forest, and where they were designated by Indra (Śakra) as a portion (bhāgārthe) for the deities (daivateṣu).
अत्राहिताः कृतघ्नाश्च मानुषाश्चासुराश्च ये ।
उदयंस्तान्हि सर्वान्वै क्रोधाद्धन्ति विभावसुः ॥१६॥
16. atrāhitāḥ kṛtaghnāśca mānuṣāścāsurāśca ye ,
udayaṁstānhi sarvānvai krodhāddhanti vibhāvasuḥ.
16. atra āhitāḥ kṛtaghnāḥ ca mānuṣāḥ ca asurāḥ ca ye
udayan tān hi sarvān vai krodhāt hanti vibhāvasuḥ
16. Here, the rising Vibhāvasu (Agni or the Sun), out of anger, indeed kills all those who are present—whether ungrateful ones, humans, or asuras.
एतद्द्वारं त्रिलोकस्य स्वर्गस्य च सुखस्य च ।
एष पूर्वो दिशाभागो विशावैनं यदीच्छसि ॥१७॥
17. etaddvāraṁ trilokasya svargasya ca sukhasya ca ,
eṣa pūrvo diśābhāgo viśāvainaṁ yadīcchasi.
17. etat dvāram trilokasya svargasya ca sukhasya ca
eṣa pūrvaḥ diśābhāgaḥ viśa enam yadi icchasi
17. This is the gateway to the three worlds, to heaven, and to happiness. This is the eastern region; enter it if you desire.
प्रियं कार्यं हि मे तस्य यस्यास्मि वचने स्थितः ।
ब्रूहि गालव यास्यामि शृणु चाप्यपरां दिशम् ॥१८॥
18. priyaṁ kāryaṁ hi me tasya yasyāsmi vacane sthitaḥ ,
brūhi gālava yāsyāmi śṛṇu cāpyaparāṁ diśam.
18. priyam kāryam hi me tasya yasya asmi vacane sthitaḥ
brūhi gālava yāsyāmi śṛṇu ca api aparām diśam
18. Indeed, it is a pleasing task for me, that of him whose word I abide by. Speak, O Gālava; I will go, and also listen concerning the other direction.
