युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
इदं मे तत्त्वतो राजन्वक्तुमर्हसि भारत ।
अहिंसयित्वा केनेह ब्रह्महत्या विधीयते ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
idaṁ me tattvato rājanvaktumarhasi bhārata ,
ahiṁsayitvā keneha brahmahatyā vidhīyate.
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca idam me tattvataḥ rājan vaktum arhasi
bhārata ahiṃsayitvā kena iha brahmahatyā vidhīyate
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O King, O Bhārata, you should explain this to me truthfully: by what means can a "brahmahatyā" (the sin of killing a brahmin) be committed here (in this world) without actually inflicting harm?'
भीष्म उवाच ।
व्यासमामन्त्र्य राजेन्द्र पुरा यत्पृष्टवानहम् ।
तत्तेऽहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि तदिहैकमनाः शृणु ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
vyāsamāmantrya rājendra purā yatpṛṣṭavānaham ,
tatte'haṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi tadihaikamanāḥ śṛṇu.
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca vyāsam āmantrya rājendra purā yat pṛṣṭavān
aham tat te aham sampravakṣyāmi tat iha ekamanāḥ śṛṇu
2. Bhīṣma said: 'O king of kings (rājendra), I shall fully explain to you now what I formerly asked Vyāsa, after consulting him. Therefore, listen to that with single-minded attention here.'
चतुर्थस्त्वं वसिष्ठस्य तत्त्वमाख्याहि मे मुने ।
अहिंसयित्वा केनेह ब्रह्महत्या विधीयते ॥३॥
3. caturthastvaṁ vasiṣṭhasya tattvamākhyāhi me mune ,
ahiṁsayitvā keneha brahmahatyā vidhīyate.
3. caturthaḥ tvam vasiṣṭhasya tattvam ākhyāhi me
mune ahiṃsayitvā kena iha brahmahatyā vidhīyate
3. mune tvam vasiṣṭhasya caturthaḥ me tattvam
ākhyāhi iha kena ahiṃsayitvā brahmahatyā vidhīyate
3. O sage, you are the fourth in the lineage of Vasiṣṭha; explain the truth to me. How can the grave sin of killing a brahmin (brahmahatyā) be incurred here without actually committing violence?
इति पृष्टो महाराज पराशरशरीरजः ।
अब्रवीन्निपुणो धर्मे निःसंशयमनुत्तमम् ॥४॥
4. iti pṛṣṭo mahārāja parāśaraśarīrajaḥ ,
abravīnnipuṇo dharme niḥsaṁśayamanuttamam.
4. iti pṛṣṭaḥ mahārāja parāśaraśarīrajaḥ
abravīt nipuṇaḥ dharme niḥsaṃśayam anuttamam
4. mahārāja iti pṛṣṭaḥ parāśaraśarīrajaḥ dharme
nipuṇaḥ niḥsaṃśayam anuttamam abravīt
4. O great king, thus questioned, he who was born from Parāśara, being skilled in (natural law) dharma, gave an unsurpassed and doubtless reply.
ब्राह्मणं स्वयमाहूय भिक्षार्थे कृशवृत्तिनम् ।
ब्रूयान्नास्तीति यः पश्चात्तं विद्याद्ब्रह्मघातिनम् ॥५॥
5. brāhmaṇaṁ svayamāhūya bhikṣārthe kṛśavṛttinam ,
brūyānnāstīti yaḥ paścāttaṁ vidyādbrahmaghātinam.
5. brāhmaṇam svayam āhūya bhikṣārthe kṛśavṛttinam brūyāt
na asti iti yaḥ paścāt tam vidyāt brahmaghātinam
5. yaḥ svayam bhikṣārthe kṛśavṛttinam brāhmaṇam āhūya
paścāt na asti iti brūyāt tam brahmaghātinam vidyāt
5. Whoever, after personally inviting a brahmin with a meager livelihood for alms, later says 'there is nothing,' one should consider him a brahmin killer (brahmaghātin).
मध्यस्थस्येह विप्रस्य योऽनूचानस्य भारत ।
वृत्तिं हरति दुर्बुद्धिस्तं विद्याद्ब्रह्मघातिनम् ॥६॥
6. madhyasthasyeha viprasya yo'nūcānasya bhārata ,
vṛttiṁ harati durbuddhistaṁ vidyādbrahmaghātinam.
6. madhyasthasya iha viprasya yaḥ anūcānasya bhārata
vṛttim harati durbuddhiḥ tam vidyāt brahmaghātinam
6. bhārata iha yaḥ durbuddhiḥ madhyasthasya anūcānasya
viprasya vṛttim harati tam brahmaghātinam vidyāt
6. O Bhārata, whoever, that wicked-minded person, deprives an impartial brahmin, learned in the Vedas, of his livelihood in this world, should be considered a brahmin killer (brahmaghātin).
गोकुलस्य तृषार्तस्य जलार्थे वसुधाधिप ।
उत्पादयति यो विघ्नं तं विद्याद्ब्रह्मघातिनम् ॥७॥
7. gokulasya tṛṣārtasya jalārthe vasudhādhipa ,
utpādayati yo vighnaṁ taṁ vidyādbrahmaghātinam.
7. gokulasya tṛṣārtasya jalārthe vasudhādhipa yaḥ
utpādayati vighnaṃ taṃ vidyāt brahmaghātinaṃ
7. vasudhādhipa yaḥ tṛṣārtasya gokulasya jalārthe
vighnaṃ utpādayati taṃ brahmaghātinaṃ vidyāt
7. O ruler of the earth, whoever creates an obstacle for a thirsty herd of cows seeking water, one should consider him a murderer of a brahmin.
यः प्रवृत्तां श्रुतिं सम्यक्शास्त्रं वा मुनिभिः कृतम् ।
दूषयत्यनभिज्ञाय तं विद्याद्ब्रह्मघातिनम् ॥८॥
8. yaḥ pravṛttāṁ śrutiṁ samyakśāstraṁ vā munibhiḥ kṛtam ,
dūṣayatyanabhijñāya taṁ vidyādbrahmaghātinam.
8. yaḥ pravṛttāṃ śrutiṃ samyak śāstraṃ vā munibhiḥ
kṛtam dūṣayati anabhijñāya taṃ vidyāt brahmaghātinaṃ
8. yaḥ pravṛttāṃ śrutiṃ vā munibhiḥ kṛtam śāstraṃ samyak
anabhijñāya dūṣayati taṃ brahmaghātinaṃ vidyāt
8. Whoever, without properly understanding, reviles the established sacred tradition or a scripture composed by sages, one should consider him a murderer of a brahmin.
आत्मजां रूपसंपन्नां महतीं सदृशे वरे ।
न प्रयच्छति यः कन्यां तं विद्याद्ब्रह्मघातिनम् ॥९॥
9. ātmajāṁ rūpasaṁpannāṁ mahatīṁ sadṛśe vare ,
na prayacchati yaḥ kanyāṁ taṁ vidyādbrahmaghātinam.
9. yaḥ ātmajāṃ rūpasaṃpannāṃ mahatīṃ kanyāṃ sadṛśe
vare na prayacchati taṃ vidyāt brahmaghātinaṃ
9. yaḥ rūpasaṃpannāṃ mahatīṃ ātmajāṃ kanyāṃ sadṛśe
vare na prayacchati taṃ brahmaghātinaṃ vidyāt
9. Whoever does not give his own beautiful, grown-up daughter to a suitable groom, one should consider him a murderer of a brahmin.
अधर्मनिरतो मूढो मिथ्या यो वै द्विजातिषु ।
दद्यान्मर्मातिगं शोकं तं विद्याद्ब्रह्मघातिनम् ॥१०॥
10. adharmanirato mūḍho mithyā yo vai dvijātiṣu ,
dadyānmarmātigaṁ śokaṁ taṁ vidyādbrahmaghātinam.
10. yaḥ adharmanirataḥ mūḍhaḥ vai mithyā dvijātiṣu
marmātigaṃ śokaṃ dadyāt taṃ vidyāt brahmaghātinaṃ
10. yaḥ adharmanirataḥ mūḍhaḥ vai mithyā dvijātiṣu
marmātigaṃ śokaṃ dadyāt taṃ brahmaghātinaṃ vidyāt
10. Whoever, being foolish and engrossed in unrighteousness (adharma), indeed causes heart-rending sorrow to the twice-born, one should consider him a murderer of a brahmin.
चक्षुषा विप्रहीनस्य पङ्गुलस्य जडस्य वा ।
हरेत यो वै सर्वस्वं तं विद्याद्ब्रह्मघातिनम् ॥११॥
11. cakṣuṣā viprahīnasya paṅgulasya jaḍasya vā ,
hareta yo vai sarvasvaṁ taṁ vidyādbrahmaghātinam.
11. cakṣuṣā viprahīnasya paṅgulasya jaḍasya vā haret
yaḥ vai sarvasvaṃ taṃ vidyāt brahmaghātinam
11. yaḥ vai cakṣuṣā viprahīnasya paṅgulasya jaḍasya vā sarvasvaṃ haret,
taṃ brahmaghātinam vidyāt
11. One should indeed consider as one who commits the grave sin of brahminicide (brahmahātin) anyone who takes away all the possessions of a person who is blind, lame, or mentally incapacitated.
आश्रमे वा वने वा यो ग्रामे वा यदि वा पुरे ।
अग्निं समुत्सृजेन्मोहात्तं विद्याद्ब्रह्मघातिनम् ॥१२॥
12. āśrame vā vane vā yo grāme vā yadi vā pure ,
agniṁ samutsṛjenmohāttaṁ vidyādbrahmaghātinam.
12. āśrame vā vane vā yaḥ grāme vā yadi vā pure
agniṃ samutsṛjet mohāt taṃ vidyāt brahmaghātinam
12. yaḥ āśrame vā vane vā grāme vā yadi vā pure mohāt agniṃ samutsṛjet,
taṃ brahmaghātinam vidyāt
12. Whoever, whether in a hermitage (āśrama), forest, village, or city, abandons a fire due to delusion (moha), one should consider him as one who commits the grave sin of brahminicide (brahmahātin).
