युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
कथंवीर्यः स राजाभूत्सोमको वदतां वर ।
कर्माण्यस्य प्रभावं च श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kathaṁvīryaḥ sa rājābhūtsomako vadatāṁ vara ,
karmāṇyasya prabhāvaṁ ca śrotumicchāmi tattvataḥ.
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca kathaṃvīryaḥ saḥ rājā abhūt somakaḥ vadatām
vara karmāṇi asya prabhāvam ca śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: O best of speakers, what kind of power did that King Somaka possess? I truly wish to hear in detail about his actions (karma) and his influence.
लोमश उवाच ।
युधिष्ठिरासीन्नृपतिः सोमको नाम धार्मिकः ।
तस्य भार्याशतं राजन्सदृशीनामभूत्तदा ॥२॥
2. lomaśa uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhirāsīnnṛpatiḥ somako nāma dhārmikaḥ ,
tasya bhāryāśataṁ rājansadṛśīnāmabhūttadā.
2. lomaśaḥ uvāca yudhiṣṭhira āsīt nṛpatiḥ somakaḥ nāma
dhārmikaḥ tasya bhāryāśatam rājan sadṛśīnām abhūt tadā
2. Lomaśa said: O Yudhiṣṭhira, there was a king named Somaka who was righteous (dhārmika). At that time, O king (rājan), he had a hundred wives (bhāryāśatam) who were all of equal status.
स वै यत्नेन महता तासु पुत्रं महीपतिः ।
कंचिन्नासादयामास कालेन महता अपि ॥३॥
3. sa vai yatnena mahatā tāsu putraṁ mahīpatiḥ ,
kaṁcinnāsādayāmāsa kālena mahatā api.
3. sa vai yatnena mahatā tāsu putram mahīpatiḥ
kañcit na āsādayāmāsa kālena mahatā api
3. Despite his great efforts, that king could not obtain any son from his wives, even after a long time.
कदाचित्तस्य वृद्धस्य यतमानस्य यत्नतः ।
जन्तुर्नाम सुतस्तस्मिन्स्त्रीशते समजायत ॥४॥
4. kadācittasya vṛddhasya yatamānasya yatnataḥ ,
janturnāma sutastasminstrīśate samajāyata.
4. kadācit tasya vṛddhasya yatamānasya yatnataḥ
jantuḥ nāma sutaḥ tasmin strīśate samajāyata
4. Once, to that old king who was striving diligently, a son named Jantu was born among his hundred wives.
तं जातं मातरः सर्वाः परिवार्य समासते ।
सततं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा कामभोगान्विशां पते ॥५॥
5. taṁ jātaṁ mātaraḥ sarvāḥ parivārya samāsate ,
satataṁ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā kāmabhogānviśāṁ pate.
5. tam jātam mātaraḥ sarvāḥ parivārya samāsate
satatam pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā kāmabhogān viśām pate
5. O lord of the people, all the mothers constantly surrounded that newborn child and sat with him, having set aside all worldly pleasures.
ततः पिपीलिका जन्तुं कदाचिददशत्स्फिजि ।
स दष्टो व्यनदद्राजंस्तेन दुःखेन बालकः ॥६॥
6. tataḥ pipīlikā jantuṁ kadācidadaśatsphiji ,
sa daṣṭo vyanadadrājaṁstena duḥkhena bālakaḥ.
6. tataḥ pipīlikā jantum kadācit adaśat sphiji sa
daṣṭaḥ vyanadat rājan tena duḥkhena bālakaḥ
6. Then, O king, an ant once bit Jantu on the buttocks. Bitten by it, the child cried out from that pain.
ततस्ता मातरः सर्वाः प्राक्रोशन्भृशदुःखिताः ।
परिवार्य जन्तुं सहिताः स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ॥७॥
7. tatastā mātaraḥ sarvāḥ prākrośanbhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ ,
parivārya jantuṁ sahitāḥ sa śabdastumulo'bhavat.
7. tataḥ tāḥ mātaraḥ sarvāḥ prākrośan bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ
parivārya jantum sahitāḥ saḥ śabdaḥ tumulaḥ abhavat
7. Then, all those mothers, intensely distressed, surrounded the child and cried out together. That sound became a tremendous clamor.
तमार्तनादं सहसा शुश्राव स महीपतिः ।
अमात्यपरिषन्मध्ये उपविष्टः सहर्त्विजैः ॥८॥
8. tamārtanādaṁ sahasā śuśrāva sa mahīpatiḥ ,
amātyapariṣanmadhye upaviṣṭaḥ sahartvijaiḥ.
8. tam ārtanādam sahasā śuśrāva saḥ mahīpatiḥ
amātyapariṣat madhye upaviṣṭaḥ sahartvijaiḥ
8. The king (mahīpati), who was seated among his council of ministers and with the priests (ṛtvij), suddenly heard that cry of distress (ārtanāda).
ततः प्रस्थापयामास किमेतदिति पार्थिवः ।
तस्मै क्षत्ता यथावृत्तमाचचक्षे सुतं प्रति ॥९॥
9. tataḥ prasthāpayāmāsa kimetaditi pārthivaḥ ,
tasmai kṣattā yathāvṛttamācacakṣe sutaṁ prati.
9. tataḥ prasthāpayāmāsa kim etat iti pārthivaḥ
tasmai kṣattā yathāvṛttam ācacarkṣe sutam prati
9. Then, the king (pārthiva) dispatched someone (to find out), asking, "What is this?" The chamberlain (kṣattā) then narrated to him the full account concerning the son.
त्वरमाणः स चोत्थाय सोमकः सह मन्त्रिभिः ।
प्रविश्यान्तःपुरं पुत्रमाश्वासयदरिंदमः ॥१०॥
10. tvaramāṇaḥ sa cotthāya somakaḥ saha mantribhiḥ ,
praviśyāntaḥpuraṁ putramāśvāsayadariṁdamaḥ.
10. tvaramāṇaḥ saḥ ca utthāya somakaḥ saha mantribhiḥ
praviśya antaḥpuram putram āśvāsayat ariṃdamaḥ
10. And King Somaka, the vanquisher of foes (ariṃdama), rising quickly with his ministers, entered the inner palace and consoled his son.
सान्त्वयित्वा तु तं पुत्रं निष्क्रम्यान्तःपुरान्नृपः ।
ऋत्विजैः सहितो राजन्सहामात्य उपाविशत् ॥११॥
11. sāntvayitvā tu taṁ putraṁ niṣkramyāntaḥpurānnṛpaḥ ,
ṛtvijaiḥ sahito rājansahāmātya upāviśat.
11. sāntvayitvā tu tam putram niṣkramya antaḥpurāt
nṛpaḥ ṛtvijaiḥ sahitaḥ rājan sahāmātyaḥ upāviśat
11. O King, after consoling that son, the king emerged from the inner chambers and sat down, accompanied by his priests and ministers.
सोमक उवाच ।
धिगस्त्विहैकपुत्रत्वमपुत्रत्वं वरं भवेत् ।
नित्यातुरत्वाद्भूतानां शोक एवैकपुत्रता ॥१२॥
12. somaka uvāca ,
dhigastvihaikaputratvamaputratvaṁ varaṁ bhavet ,
nityāturatvādbhūtānāṁ śoka evaikaputratā.
12. somakaḥ uvāca dhik astu iha ekaputratvam aputratvam
varam bhavet nityāturatvāt bhūtānām śokaḥ eva ekaputratā
12. Somaka said: 'Shame on having only one son in this world; it would be preferable to be childless. For living beings, due to their constant anxiety, having only one son is nothing but sorrow.'
इदं भार्याशतं ब्रह्मन्परीक्ष्योपचितं प्रभो ।
पुत्रार्थिना मया वोढं न चासां विद्यते प्रजा ॥१३॥
13. idaṁ bhāryāśataṁ brahmanparīkṣyopacitaṁ prabho ,
putrārthinā mayā voḍhaṁ na cāsāṁ vidyate prajā.
13. idam bhāryāśatam brahman parīkṣya upacitam prabho
putrārthinā mayā voḍham na ca āsām vidyate prajā
13. O Brāhmaṇa, O Lord, I, desirous of a son, married these hundred wives, whom I had carefully chosen and acquired. Yet, among them, there is no offspring.
एकः कथंचिदुत्पन्नः पुत्रो जन्तुरयं मम ।
यतमानस्य सर्वासु किं नु दुःखमतः परम् ॥१४॥
14. ekaḥ kathaṁcidutpannaḥ putro janturayaṁ mama ,
yatamānasya sarvāsu kiṁ nu duḥkhamataḥ param.
14. ekaḥ kathaṃcit utpannaḥ putraḥ jantuḥ ayam mama
yatamānasya sarvāsu kim nu duḥkham ataḥ param
14. This one son of mine, a mere being, was somehow born after I had strived with all my wives. What greater sorrow could there be beyond this?
वयश्च समतीतं मे सभार्यस्य द्विजोत्तम ।
आसां प्राणाः समायत्ता मम चात्रैकपुत्रके ॥१५॥
15. vayaśca samatītaṁ me sabhāryasya dvijottama ,
āsāṁ prāṇāḥ samāyattā mama cātraikaputrake.
15. vayaḥ ca samatītam me sabhāryasya dvijottama
āsām prāṇāḥ samāyattā mama ca atra ekaputrake
15. O best of Brahmins (dvijottama), my age, along with my wife's, has passed. Their life breaths (prāṇa) and mine are dependent on this one son.
स्यान्नु कर्म तथा युक्तं येन पुत्रशतं भवेत् ।
महता लघुना वापि कर्मणा दुष्करेण वा ॥१६॥
16. syānnu karma tathā yuktaṁ yena putraśataṁ bhavet ,
mahatā laghunā vāpi karmaṇā duṣkareṇa vā.
16. syāt nu karma tathā yuktam yena putraśatam bhavet
mahatā laghunā vā api karmaṇā duṣkareṇa vā
16. Is there an action (karma) or ritual (karma) by which a hundred sons could be born? Whether by a great or small action (karma), or even a difficult one.
ऋत्विगुवाच ।
अस्ति वै तादृशं कर्म येन पुत्रशतं भवेत् ।
यदि शक्नोषि तत्कर्तुमथ वक्ष्यामि सोमक ॥१७॥
17. ṛtviguvāca ,
asti vai tādṛśaṁ karma yena putraśataṁ bhavet ,
yadi śaknoṣi tatkartumatha vakṣyāmi somaka.
17. ṛtvik uvāca asti vai tādṛśam karma yena putraśatam
bhavet yadi śaknoṣi tat kartum atha vakṣyāmi somaka
17. The priest (ṛtvij) said, 'Indeed, there is such an action (karma) by which a hundred sons could be born. If you are able to perform it, then I will tell you, Somaka.'
सोमक उवाच ।
कार्यं वा यदि वाकार्यं येन पुत्रशतं भवेत् ।
कृतमेव हि तद्विद्धि भगवान्प्रब्रवीतु मे ॥१८॥
18. somaka uvāca ,
kāryaṁ vā yadi vākāryaṁ yena putraśataṁ bhavet ,
kṛtameva hi tadviddhi bhagavānprabravītu me.
18. somaka uvāca kāryam vā yadi vā akāryam yena putraśatam
bhavet kṛtam eva hi tat viddhi bhagavān prabravītu me
18. Somaka said, 'Whether it is a proper (kārya) or an improper action (kārya) by which a hundred sons could be born, know that it will certainly be performed by me. O venerable one (bhagavān), please instruct me.'
ऋत्विगुवाच ।
यजस्व जन्तुना राजंस्त्वं मया वितते क्रतौ ।
ततः पुत्रशतं श्रीमद्भविष्यत्यचिरेण ते ॥१९॥
19. ṛtviguvāca ,
yajasva jantunā rājaṁstvaṁ mayā vitate kratau ,
tataḥ putraśataṁ śrīmadbhaviṣyatyacireṇa te.
19. ṛtvik uvāca yajasva jantunā rājan tvaṃ mayā vitate
kratou tataḥ putraśataṃ śrīmat bhaviṣyati acireṇa te
19. ṛtvik uvāca rājan mayā vitate kratou tvaṃ jantunā
yajasva tataḥ te acireṇa śrīmat putraśataṃ bhaviṣyati
19. The priest said, "O King, you should perform the Vedic ritual (kratu) with the sacrificial animal in this elaborate ceremony prepared by me. Then, without delay, a hundred glorious sons will be born to you."
वपायां हूयमानायां धूममाघ्राय मातरः ।
ततस्ताः सुमहावीर्याञ्जनयिष्यन्ति ते सुतान् ॥२०॥
20. vapāyāṁ hūyamānāyāṁ dhūmamāghrāya mātaraḥ ,
tatastāḥ sumahāvīryāñjanayiṣyanti te sutān.
20. vapāyām hūyamānāyām dhūmam āghrāya mātaraḥ |
tataḥ tāḥ sumahāvīryān janayiṣyanti te sutān
20. Thereafter, when your mothers inhale the smoke from the omentum being offered into the fire, they will give birth to very powerful sons.
तस्यामेव तु ते जन्तुर्भविता पुनरात्मजः ।
उत्तरे चास्य सौवर्णं लक्ष्म पार्श्वे भविष्यति ॥२१॥
21. tasyāmeva tu te janturbhavitā punarātmajaḥ ,
uttare cāsya sauvarṇaṁ lakṣma pārśve bhaviṣyati.
21. tasyām eva tu te jantuḥ bhavitā punaḥ ātmajaḥ |
uttare ca asya sauvarṇam lakṣma pārśve bhaviṣyati
21. However, that very creature (jantu) will be reborn as your son through her (the mother). Furthermore, he will have a golden mark on his upper flank.
