वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः प्रायाद्विदुरोऽश्वैरुदारैर्महाजवैर्बलिभिः साधुदान्तैः ।
बलान्नियुक्तो धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा मनीषिणां पाण्डवानां सकाशम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ prāyādviduro'śvairudārai;rmahājavairbalibhiḥ sādhudāntaiḥ ,
balānniyukto dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā; manīṣiṇāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ sakāśam.
1. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ prāyāt viduraḥ
aśvaiḥ udāraiḥ mahājavaiḥ balibhiḥ
sādhudāntaiḥ balāt niyuktaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa
rājñā manīṣiṇām pāṇḍavānām sakāśam
1. Vaishampayana said, "Thereupon, Vidura departed on excellent, very swift, strong, and well-tamed horses. He had been compelled by King Dhritarashtra to go to the wise Pandavas."
सोऽभिपत्य तदध्वानमासाद्य नृपतेः पुरम् ।
प्रविवेश महाबुद्धिः पूज्यमानो द्विजातिभिः ॥२॥
2. so'bhipatya tadadhvānamāsādya nṛpateḥ puram ,
praviveśa mahābuddhiḥ pūjyamāno dvijātibhiḥ.

2. Having traversed that journey and reached the city of the king (Pāṇḍavas' residence), the greatly intelligent Vidura entered, being honored by the twice-born (dvijāti) persons.
स राजगृहमासाद्य कुबेरभवनोपमम् ।
अभ्यगच्छत धर्मात्मा धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥३॥
3. sa rājagṛhamāsādya kuberabhavanopamam ,
abhyagacchata dharmātmā dharmaputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.

3. The righteous Vidura (dharmātmā), having arrived at Rājagṛha, a city resembling the abode of Kubera, went to meet Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma (dharmaputra).
तं वै राजा सत्यधृतिर्महात्मा अजातशत्रुर्विदुरं यथावत् ।
पूजापूर्वं प्रतिगृह्याजमीढस्ततोऽपृच्छद्धृतराष्ट्रं सपुत्रम् ॥४॥
4. taṁ vai rājā satyadhṛtirmahātmā; ajātaśatrurviduraṁ yathāvat ,
pūjāpūrvaṁ pratigṛhyājamīḍha;stato'pṛcchaddhṛtarāṣṭraṁ saputram.

4. King Yudhiṣṭhira, who was firm in truth, great-souled (mahātmā), and without enemies, the scion of Ajāmīḍha, duly received Vidura with proper honors. Thereafter, he inquired about Dhṛtarāṣṭra and his sons.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
विज्ञायते ते मनसो न प्रहर्षः कच्चित्क्षत्तः कुशलेनागतोऽसि ।
कच्चित्पुत्राः स्थविरस्यानुलोमा वशानुगाश्चापि विशोऽपि कच्चित् ॥५॥
5. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
vijñāyate te manaso na praharṣaḥ; kaccitkṣattaḥ kuśalenāgato'si ,
kaccitputrāḥ sthavirasyānulomā; vaśānugāścāpi viśo'pi kaccit.
5. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca vijñāyate te manasaḥ
na praharṣaḥ kaccit kṣattaḥ kuśalena
āgataḥ asi kaccit putrāḥ sthavirasya
anulomāḥ vaśānugāḥ ca api viśaḥ api kaccit
5. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'It seems there is no joy (praharsa) in your mind. O Vidura (kṣattṛ), I hope you have arrived in good health? And are the old king's sons compliant and obedient? Are the subjects also following orders?'
विदुर उवाच ।
राजा महात्मा कुशली सपुत्र आस्ते वृतो ज्ञातिभिरिन्द्रकल्पैः ।
प्रीतो राजन्पुत्रगणैर्विनीतैर्विशोक एवात्मरतिर्दृढात्मा ॥६॥
6. vidura uvāca ,
rājā mahātmā kuśalī saputra; āste vṛto jñātibhirindrakalpaiḥ ,
prīto rājanputragaṇairvinītai;rviśoka evātmaratirdṛḍhātmā.
6. viduraḥ uvāca rājā mahātmā kuśalī
saputraḥ āste vṛtaḥ jñātibhiḥ indrakalpaiḥ
prītaḥ rājan putragaṇaiḥ
vinītaiḥ viśokaḥ eva ātmaratiḥ dṛḍhātmā
6. Vidura said: 'O King (rājan), the great-souled (mahātmā) king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), along with his sons, is well. He is surrounded by kinsmen who are like Indra, and he is pleased by his well-behaved multitude of sons. He is indeed free from sorrow (viśoka), delights in his own self (ātmarati), and is firm-minded (dṛḍhātmā).'
इदं तु त्वां कुरुराजोऽभ्युवाच पूर्वं पृष्ट्वा कुशलं चाव्ययं च ।
इयं सभा त्वत्सभातुल्यरूपा भ्रातॄणां ते पश्य तामेत्य पुत्र ॥७॥
7. idaṁ tu tvāṁ kururājo'bhyuvāca; pūrvaṁ pṛṣṭvā kuśalaṁ cāvyayaṁ ca ,
iyaṁ sabhā tvatsabhātulyarūpā; bhrātṝṇāṁ te paśya tāmetya putra.
7. idaṃ tu tvāṃ kururājaḥ abhyuvāca
pūrvaṃ pṛṣṭvā kuśalaṃ ca avyayaṃ
ca iyaṃ sabhā tvatsabhātulyarūpā
bhrātṝṇāṃ te paśya tāṃ etya putra
7. But the Kuru King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) first inquired about your welfare and stability, then said this to you: 'This assembly hall, which belongs to your brothers, is similar in form to your assembly hall. Go and see it, my son.'
समागम्य भ्रातृभिः पार्थ तस्यां सुहृद्द्यूतं क्रियतां रम्यतां च ।
प्रीयामहे भवतः संगमेन समागताः कुरवश्चैव सर्वे ॥८॥
8. samāgamya bhrātṛbhiḥ pārtha tasyāṁ; suhṛddyūtaṁ kriyatāṁ ramyatāṁ ca ,
prīyāmahe bhavataḥ saṁgamena; samāgatāḥ kuravaścaiva sarve.
8. samāgamya bhrātṛbhiḥ pārtha tasyāṃ
suhṛt dyūtaṃ kriyatāṃ ramyatāṃ
ca prīyāmahe bhavataḥ saṅgamena
samāgatāḥ kuravaḥ ca eva sarve
8. O Pārtha, having gathered with your brothers in that hall, let a friendly game of dice be played, and let there be enjoyment. We are all the Kurus who have assembled, and we are pleased by your presence.
दुरोदरा विहिता ये तु तत्र महात्मना धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा ।
तान्द्रक्ष्यसे कितवान्संनिविष्टानित्यागतोऽहं नृपते तज्जुषस्व ॥९॥
9. durodarā vihitā ye tu tatra; mahātmanā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā ,
tāndrakṣyase kitavānsaṁniviṣṭā;nityāgato'haṁ nṛpate tajjuṣasva.
9. durodarāḥ vihitāḥ ye tu tatra
mahātmanā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā tān
drakṣyase kitavān saṃniviṣṭān iti
āgataḥ ahaṃ nṛpate tat juṣasva
9. Indeed, the great-souled (ātman) King Dhṛtarāṣṭra has arranged for dice-players there. You will see those gamblers seated. So, I have come, O King; please partake in this.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
द्यूते क्षत्तः कलहो विद्यते नः को वै द्यूतं रोचयेद्बुध्यमानः ।
किं वा भवान्मन्यते युक्तरूपं भवद्वाक्ये सर्व एव स्थिताः स्म ॥१०॥
10. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
dyūte kṣattaḥ kalaho vidyate naḥ; ko vai dyūtaṁ rocayedbudhyamānaḥ ,
kiṁ vā bhavānmanyate yuktarūpaṁ; bhavadvākye sarva eva sthitāḥ sma.
10. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca dyūte kṣattaḥ kalahaḥ
vidyate naḥ kaḥ vai dyūtaṃ rocayet
budhyamānaḥ kiṃ vā bhavān manyate yukta
rūpaṃ bhavat vākye sarve eva sthitāḥ sma
10. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O charioteer, gambling always leads to disputes for us. Who, if they are discerning, would indeed take pleasure in gambling? So, what do you, sir, consider appropriate? We are all ready to abide by your word.'
विदुर उवाच ।
जानाम्यहं द्यूतमनर्थमूलं कृतश्च यत्नोऽस्य मया निवारणे ।
राजा तु मां प्राहिणोत्त्वत्सकाशं श्रुत्वा विद्वञ्श्रेय इहाचरस्व ॥११॥
11. vidura uvāca ,
jānāmyahaṁ dyūtamanarthamūlaṁ; kṛtaśca yatno'sya mayā nivāraṇe ,
rājā tu māṁ prāhiṇottvatsakāśaṁ; śrutvā vidvañśreya ihācarasva.
11. viduraḥ uvāca | jānāmi aham dyūtam
anarthamūlam kṛtaḥ ca yatnaḥ asya mayā
nivāraṇe | rājā tu mām prāhiṇot tvat
sakāśam śrutvā vidvan śreyaḥ iha ācarasva
11. Vidura said, "I know that gambling is the root of misfortune, and I made an effort to prevent it. However, the king sent me to you after hearing [about the situation]. O wise one, please do what is auspicious here."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
के तत्रान्ये कितवा दीव्यमाना विना राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रैः ।
पृच्छामि त्वां विदुर ब्रूहि नस्तान्यैर्दीव्यामः शतशः संनिपत्य ॥१२॥
12. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ke tatrānye kitavā dīvyamānā; vinā rājño dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraiḥ ,
pṛcchāmi tvāṁ vidura brūhi nastā;nyairdīvyāmaḥ śataśaḥ saṁnipatya.
12. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca | ke tatra anye kitavāḥ
dīvyamānāḥ vinā rājñaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya
putraiḥ | pṛcchāmi tvām vidura brūhi naḥ
taiḥ anyaiḥ dīvyāmaḥ śataśaḥ saṃnipatya
12. Yudhiṣṭhira said, "Who else among the gamblers are playing there, besides the sons of King Dhṛtarāṣṭra? Tell us, Vidura, whom shall we play against, gathering in vast numbers?"
विदुर उवाच ।
गान्धारराजः शकुनिर्विशां पते राजातिदेवी कृतहस्तो मताक्षः ।
विविंशतिश्चित्रसेनश्च राजा सत्यव्रतः पुरुमित्रो जयश्च ॥१३॥
13. vidura uvāca ,
gāndhārarājaḥ śakunirviśāṁ pate; rājātidevī kṛtahasto matākṣaḥ ,
viviṁśatiścitrasenaśca rājā; satyavrataḥ purumitro jayaśca.
13. viduraḥ uvāca | gāndhārarājaḥ śakuniḥ
viśām pate rājā atidevī kṛtahastaḥ
matākṣaḥ | viviṃśatiḥ ca citrasenaḥ ca
rājā satyavrataḥ purumitraḥ jayaḥ ca
13. Vidura said, "O lord of the people, King Śakuni, the ruler of Gāndhāra, is a supremely skilled gambler, expert, and cunning with dice. Also present are Viviṃśati, Citrasena, King Satyavrata, Purumitra, and Jaya."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
महाभयाः कितवाः संनिविष्टा मायोपधा देवितारोऽत्र सन्ति ।
धात्रा तु दिष्टस्य वशे किलेदं नादेवनं कितवैरद्य तैर्मे ॥१४॥
14. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
mahābhayāḥ kitavāḥ saṁniviṣṭā; māyopadhā devitāro'tra santi ,
dhātrā tu diṣṭasya vaśe kiledaṁ; nādevanaṁ kitavairadya tairme.
14. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca | mahābhayāḥ kitavāḥ
saṃniviṣṭāḥ māyopadhāḥ devitāraḥ atra
santi | dhātrā tu diṣṭasya vaśe kila
idam na adevanam kitavaiḥ adya taiḥ me
14. Yudhiṣṭhira said, "These formidable and deceitful gamblers have assembled here. Yet, it is said that this situation is under the control of destiny (diṣṭa), ordained by the Creator. Therefore, there can be no avoiding gambling with these tricksters for me today."
नाहं राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रस्य शासनान्न गन्तुमिच्छामि कवे दुरोदरम् ।
इष्टो हि पुत्रस्य पिता सदैव तदस्मि कर्ता विदुरात्थ मां यथा ॥१५॥
15. nāhaṁ rājño dhṛtarāṣṭrasya śāsanā;nna gantumicchāmi kave durodaram ,
iṣṭo hi putrasya pitā sadaiva; tadasmi kartā vidurāttha māṁ yathā.
15. na aham rājñaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya śāsanāt
na gantum icchāmi kave durodaram
| iṣṭaḥ hi putrasya pitā sadā eva
tat asmi kartā vidura āttha mām yathā
15. O wise one (kavi), I do not wish to go to the gambling match by King Dhṛtarāṣṭra's command. Indeed, a father is always dear to his son. Therefore, I will act accordingly, just as you, Vidura, instruct me.
न चाकामः शकुनिना देविताहं न चेन्मां धृष्णुराह्वयिता सभायाम् ।
आहूतोऽहं न निवर्ते कदाचित्तदाहितं शाश्वतं वै व्रतं मे ॥१६॥
16. na cākāmaḥ śakuninā devitāhaṁ; na cenmāṁ dhṛṣṇurāhvayitā sabhāyām ,
āhūto'haṁ na nivarte kadāci;ttadāhitaṁ śāśvataṁ vai vrataṁ me.
16. na ca akāmaḥ śakuninā devitā aham
na cet mām dhṛṣṇuḥ āhvayitā sabhāyām
| āhūtaḥ aham na niverte kadācit
tat āhitam śāśvatam vai vratam me
16. I am not unwilling to be challenged by Śakuni, nor will I refuse if that insolent one (Duryodhana) challenges me in the assembly. Once summoned, I never retreat. That is indeed my eternal vow (vrata).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा विदुरं धर्मराजः प्रायात्रिकं सर्वमाज्ञाप्य तूर्णम् ।
प्रायाच्छ्वोभूते सगणः सानुयात्रः सह स्त्रीभिर्द्रौपदीमादिकृत्वा ॥१७॥
17. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvā viduraṁ dharmarājaḥ; prāyātrikaṁ sarvamājñāpya tūrṇam ,
prāyācchvobhūte sagaṇaḥ sānuyātraḥ; saha strībhirdraupadīmādikṛtvā.
17. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | evam uktvā viduram
dharmarājaḥ prāyātrikam sarvam ājñāpya
tūrṇam | prāyāt śvaḥ bhūte sagaṇaḥ
sānuyātraḥ saha strībhiḥ draupadīm ādikṛtvā
17. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having thus spoken to Vidura, Yudhiṣṭhira, the King of (dharma), swiftly commanded all the preparations for the journey. On the following day, he set out with his retinue and followers, accompanied by the women, including Draupadī.
दैवं प्रज्ञां तु मुष्णाति तेजश्चक्षुरिवापतत् ।
धातुश्च वशमन्वेति पाशैरिव नरः सितः ॥१८॥
18. daivaṁ prajñāṁ tu muṣṇāti tejaścakṣurivāpatat ,
dhātuśca vaśamanveti pāśairiva naraḥ sitaḥ.
18. daivam prajñām tu muṣṇāti tejaḥ cakṣuḥ iva āpatat
| dhātuḥ ca vaśam anveti pāśaiḥ iva naraḥ sitaḥ
18. Fate, however, steals one's wisdom, just as the brilliance of the eye fades away. And man submits to the will of the creator (dhātu), like a person bound with ropes.
इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ राजा सह क्षत्त्रा युधिष्ठिरः ।
अमृष्यमाणस्तत्पार्थः समाह्वानमरिंदमः ॥१९॥
19. ityuktvā prayayau rājā saha kṣattrā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
amṛṣyamāṇastatpārthaḥ samāhvānamariṁdamaḥ.
19. iti uktvā prayayau rājā saha kṣattrā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
amṛṣyamāṇaḥ tat pārthaḥ samāhvānam arindamaḥ
19. Having said this, King Yudhishthira, the subduer of enemies, went forth with Vidura, unable to tolerate that challenge. He, the son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), could not endure that summons.
बाह्लिकेन रथं दत्तमास्थाय परवीरहा ।
परिच्छन्नो ययौ पार्थो भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवः ॥२०॥
20. bāhlikena rathaṁ dattamāsthāya paravīrahā ,
paricchanno yayau pārtho bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaḥ.
20. bāhlikena ratham dattam āsthāya paravīrahā
parichchhannaḥ yayau pārthaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaḥ
20. Having mounted the chariot given by Bahlika, the son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), the son of Pandu (Pāṇḍava), the slayer of hostile heroes (paravīrahā), went forth well-covered/disguised along with his brothers.
राजश्रिया दीप्यमानो ययौ ब्रह्मपुरःसरः ।
धृतराष्ट्रेण चाहूतः कालस्य समयेन च ॥२१॥
21. rājaśriyā dīpyamāno yayau brahmapuraḥsaraḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa cāhūtaḥ kālasya samayena ca.
21. rājaśriyā dīpyamānaḥ yayau brahmapuraḥsaraḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa ca āhūtaḥ kālasya samayena ca
21. Shining with royal splendor, he went forth, preceded by Brahmins, summoned both by Dhritarashtra and by the dictates of time or destiny.
स हास्तिनपुरं गत्वा धृतराष्ट्रगृहं ययौ ।
समियाय च धर्मात्मा धृतराष्ट्रेण पाण्डवः ॥२२॥
22. sa hāstinapuraṁ gatvā dhṛtarāṣṭragṛhaṁ yayau ,
samiyāya ca dharmātmā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa pāṇḍavaḥ.
22. sa hāstinapuram gatvā dhṛtarāṣṭragṛham yayau
samiyāya ca dharmātmā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa pāṇḍavaḥ
22. Having gone to Hastinapura, that righteous-souled (dharmātmā) son of Pandu (Pāṇḍava) then went to Dhritarashtra's house and met with Dhritarashtra.
तथा द्रोणेन भीष्मेण कर्णेन च कृपेण च ।
समियाय यथान्यायं द्रौणिना च विभुः सह ॥२३॥
23. tathā droṇena bhīṣmeṇa karṇena ca kṛpeṇa ca ,
samiyāya yathānyāyaṁ drauṇinā ca vibhuḥ saha.
23. tathā droṇena bhīṣmeṇa karṇena ca kṛpeṇa ca
samiyāya yathānyāyam drauṇinā ca vibhuḥ saha
23. Thus, the powerful one (Duryodhana) duly met with Drona, Bhishma, Karna, Kripa, and Drona's son (Ashvatthama).
समेत्य च महाबाहुः सोमदत्तेन चैव ह ।
दुर्योधनेन शल्येन सौबलेन च वीर्यवान् ॥२४॥
24. sametya ca mahābāhuḥ somadattena caiva ha ,
duryodhanena śalyena saubalena ca vīryavān.

duryodhanena śalyena saubalena ca vīryavān
24. And the mighty-armed and valorous one (Duryodhana), having met with Somadatta, and indeed with Duryodhana, Shalya, and Saubala (Shakuni)...
ये चान्ये तत्र राजानः पूर्वमेव समागताः ।
जयद्रथेन च तथा कुरुभिश्चापि सर्वशः ॥२५॥
25. ye cānye tatra rājānaḥ pūrvameva samāgatāḥ ,
jayadrathena ca tathā kurubhiścāpi sarvaśaḥ.
25. ye ca anye tatra rājānaḥ pūrvam eva samāgatāḥ
jayadrathena ca tathā kurubhiḥ ca api sarvaśaḥ
25. And whichever other kings had already assembled there, (he met) also with Jayadratha and completely with the Kurus.
ततः सर्वैर्महाबाहुर्भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ।
प्रविवेश गृहं राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रस्य धीमतः ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ sarvairmahābāhurbhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ ,
praviveśa gṛhaṁ rājño dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ.
26. tataḥ sarvaiḥ mahābāhuḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ
praviveśa gṛham rājñaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ
26. Then, the mighty-armed one (Duryodhana), surrounded by all his brothers, entered the house of the wise King Dhritarashtra.
ददर्श तत्र गान्धारीं देवीं पतिमनुव्रताम् ।
स्नुषाभिः संवृतां शश्वत्ताराभिरिव रोहिणीम् ॥२७॥
27. dadarśa tatra gāndhārīṁ devīṁ patimanuvratām ,
snuṣābhiḥ saṁvṛtāṁ śaśvattārābhiriva rohiṇīm.
27. dadarśa tatra gāndhārīm devīm patim anuvratām
snuṣābhiḥ saṃvṛtām śaśvat tārābhiḥ iva rohiṇīm
27. There he saw Gāndhārī, the queen-like lady devoted to her husband, who was constantly surrounded by her daughters-in-law, just as Rohiṇī is surrounded by stars.
अभिवाद्य स गान्धारीं तया च प्रतिनन्दितः ।
ददर्श पितरं वृद्धं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम् ॥२८॥
28. abhivādya sa gāndhārīṁ tayā ca pratinanditaḥ ,
dadarśa pitaraṁ vṛddhaṁ prajñācakṣuṣamīśvaram.
28. abhivādya sa gāndhārīm tayā ca pratinanditaḥ
dadarśa pitaram vṛddham prajñācakṣuṣam īśvaram
28. After saluting Gāndhārī and being welcomed by her, he saw his aged father, the mighty lord Dhṛtarāṣṭra, whose eyes were wisdom (prajñācakṣuṣam).
राज्ञा मूर्धन्युपाघ्रातास्ते च कौरवनन्दनाः ।
चत्वारः पाण्डवा राजन्भीमसेनपुरोगमाः ॥२९॥
29. rājñā mūrdhanyupāghrātāste ca kauravanandanāḥ ,
catvāraḥ pāṇḍavā rājanbhīmasenapurogamāḥ.
29. rājñā mūrdhani upāghrātāḥ te ca kauravanandanāḥ
catvāraḥ pāṇḍavā rājan bhīmasenapurógamāḥ
29. O King, the king then kissed the heads of those four Pāṇḍavas, the delight of the Kurus (kauravanandanāḥ), who were led by Bhīmasena.
ततो हर्षः समभवत्कौरवाणां विशां पते ।
तान्दृष्ट्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रान्पाण्डवान्प्रियदर्शनान् ॥३०॥
30. tato harṣaḥ samabhavatkauravāṇāṁ viśāṁ pate ,
tāndṛṣṭvā puruṣavyāghrānpāṇḍavānpriyadarśanān.
30. tataḥ harṣaḥ samabhavat kauravāṇām viśām pate
tān dṛṣṭvā puruṣavyāghrān pāṇḍavān priyadarśanān
30. Then, O lord of the people (viśām pate), great joy arose among the Kurus (kauravāṇām) after they had seen those Pāṇḍavas of pleasing appearance, who were like tigers among men (puruṣa).
विविशुस्तेऽभ्यनुज्ञाता रत्नवन्ति गृहाण्यथ ।
ददृशुश्चोपयातास्तान्द्रौपदीप्रमुखाः स्त्रियः ॥३१॥
31. viviśuste'bhyanujñātā ratnavanti gṛhāṇyatha ,
dadṛśuścopayātāstāndraupadīpramukhāḥ striyaḥ.
31. viviśuḥ te abhyanujñātāḥ ratnavanti gṛhāṇi atha
dadṛśuḥ ca upayātāḥ tān draupadīpramukhāḥ striyaḥ
31. Then, having been granted permission, they entered the jewel-filled palaces. And the women, led by Draupadi, having arrived, saw them.
याज्ञसेन्याः परामृद्धिं दृष्ट्वा प्रज्वलितामिव ।
स्नुषास्ता धृतराष्ट्रस्य नातिप्रमनसोऽभवन् ॥३२॥
32. yājñasenyāḥ parāmṛddhiṁ dṛṣṭvā prajvalitāmiva ,
snuṣāstā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya nātipramanaso'bhavan.
32. yājñasenyāḥ parām ṛddhim dṛṣṭvā prajvalitām iva
snuṣāḥ tāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya na atipramanaso abhavan
32. Having seen the supreme splendor of Draupadi, which was as if blazing, Dhritarashtra's daughters-in-law did not become very cheerful.
ततस्ते पुरुषव्याघ्रा गत्वा स्त्रीभिस्तु संविदम् ।
कृत्वा व्यायामपूर्वाणि कृत्यानि प्रतिकर्म च ॥३३॥
33. tataste puruṣavyāghrā gatvā strībhistu saṁvidam ,
kṛtvā vyāyāmapūrvāṇi kṛtyāni pratikarma ca.
33. tataḥ te puruṣavyāghrāḥ gatvā strībhiḥ tu saṃvidam
kṛtvā vyāyāmapūrvāṇi kṛtyāni pratikarma ca
33. Then those excellent men, after consulting with the women and having performed their duties, which included physical exercise, and also after attending to their personal grooming,
ततः कृताह्निकाः सर्वे दिव्यचन्दनरूषिताः ।
कल्याणमनसश्चैव ब्राह्मणान्स्वस्ति वाच्य च ॥३४॥
34. tataḥ kṛtāhnikāḥ sarve divyacandanarūṣitāḥ ,
kalyāṇamanasaścaiva brāhmaṇānsvasti vācya ca.
34. tataḥ kṛtāhnikāḥ sarve divyacandanarūṣitāḥ
kalyāṇamanasaḥ ca eva brāhmaṇān svasti vācya ca
34. Then all of them, having completed their daily rites, smeared themselves with divine sandalwood paste, and with auspicious minds, they had Brahmins pronounce blessings.
मनोज्ञमशनं भुक्त्वा विविशुः शरणान्यथ ।
उपगीयमाना नारीभिरस्वपन्कुरुनन्दनाः ॥३५॥
35. manojñamaśanaṁ bhuktvā viviśuḥ śaraṇānyatha ,
upagīyamānā nārībhirasvapankurunandanāḥ.
35. manojñam aśanam bhuktvā viviśuḥ śaraṇāni atha
upagīyamānāḥ nārībhiḥ asvapan kurunandanāḥ
35. The sons of Kuru, having eaten a delicious meal, then entered their quarters. There, serenaded by women, they fell asleep.
जगाम तेषां सा रात्रिः पुण्या रतिविहारिणाम् ।
स्तूयमानाश्च विश्रान्ताः काले निद्रामथात्यजन् ॥३६॥
36. jagāma teṣāṁ sā rātriḥ puṇyā rativihāriṇām ,
stūyamānāśca viśrāntāḥ kāle nidrāmathātyajan.

36. That auspicious night passed for them, who were enjoying themselves. Then, rested and being praised, they gave up sleep at the proper time.
सुखोषितास्तां रजनीं प्रातः सर्वे कृताह्निकाः ।
सभां रम्यां प्रविविशुः कितवैरभिसंवृताम् ॥३७॥
37. sukhoṣitāstāṁ rajanīṁ prātaḥ sarve kṛtāhnikāḥ ,
sabhāṁ ramyāṁ praviviśuḥ kitavairabhisaṁvṛtām.
37. sukhoṣitāḥ tām rajanīm prātaḥ sarve kṛtāhnikāḥ
sabhām ramyām praviviśuḥ kitavaiḥ abhisaṃvṛtām
37. Having slept comfortably through that night, all of them, in the morning after performing their daily rituals, entered the beautiful assembly hall which was surrounded by gamblers.
