वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः श्रुत्वैव भीष्मस्य चेदिराडुरुविक्रमः ।
युयुत्सुर्वासुदेवेन वासुदेवमुवाच ह ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ śrutvaiva bhīṣmasya cedirāḍuruvikramaḥ ,
yuyutsurvāsudevena vāsudevamuvāca ha.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then, upon hearing Bhīṣma's words, the Cedi king, mighty in valor and eager to fight with Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), spoke to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), indeed.
आह्वये त्वां रणं गच्छ मया सार्धं जनार्दन ।
यावदद्य निहन्मि त्वां सहितं सर्वपाण्डवैः ॥२॥
2. āhvaye tvāṁ raṇaṁ gaccha mayā sārdhaṁ janārdana ,
yāvadadya nihanmi tvāṁ sahitaṁ sarvapāṇḍavaiḥ.
2. āhvaye tvām raṇam gaccha mayā sārdham janārdana
yāvat adya nihanmi tvām sahitam sarva-pāṇḍavaiḥ
2. O Janardana, I challenge you; come to battle with me! Today I will kill you along with all the Pandavas.
सह त्वया हि मे वध्याः पाण्डवाः कृष्ण सर्वथा ।
नृपतीन्समतिक्रम्य यैरराजा त्वमर्चितः ॥३॥
3. saha tvayā hi me vadhyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ kṛṣṇa sarvathā ,
nṛpatīnsamatikramya yairarājā tvamarcitaḥ.
3. saha tvayā hi me vadhyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ kṛṣṇa sarvathā
nṛpatīn samatikramya yaiḥ arājā tvam arcitaḥ
3. O Krishna, indeed, the Pandavas, along with you, are certainly to be killed by me. This is because, disregarding all other kings, they worshipped you, even though you are not a king.
ये त्वां दासमराजानं बाल्यादर्चन्ति दुर्मतिम् ।
अनर्हमर्हवत्कृष्ण वध्यास्त इति मे मतिः ।
इत्युक्त्वा राजशार्दूलस्तस्थौ गर्जन्नमर्षणः ॥४॥
4. ye tvāṁ dāsamarājānaṁ bālyādarcanti durmatim ,
anarhamarhavatkṛṣṇa vadhyāsta iti me matiḥ ,
ityuktvā rājaśārdūlastasthau garjannamarṣaṇaḥ.
4. ye tvām dāsam arājānam bālyāt arcanti
durmatim anarham arhavat kṛṣṇa
vadhyāḥ te iti me matiḥ iti uktvā
rāja-śārdūlaḥ tasthau garjan amarṣaṇaḥ
4. O Krishna, it is my conviction that those who, out of foolishness, worship you — a servant, not a king, and evil-minded — treating one unworthy as if worthy, are to be killed. Having spoken thus, Duryodhana, the foremost of kings, stood roaring, filled with anger.
एवमुक्ते ततः कृष्णो मृदुपूर्वमिदं वचः ।
उवाच पार्थिवान्सर्वांस्तत्समक्षं च पाण्डवान् ॥५॥
5. evamukte tataḥ kṛṣṇo mṛdupūrvamidaṁ vacaḥ ,
uvāca pārthivānsarvāṁstatsamakṣaṁ ca pāṇḍavān.
5. evam ukte tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ mṛdu-pūrvam idam vacaḥ
uvāca pārthivān sarvān tat-samakṣam ca pāṇḍavān
5. After Duryodhana had spoken thus, Krishna then addressed all the kings with these gentle words, and similarly spoke to the Pandavas in their presence.
एष नः शत्रुरत्यन्तं पार्थिवाः सात्वतीसुतः ।
सात्वतानां नृशंसात्मा न हितोऽनपकारिणाम् ॥६॥
6. eṣa naḥ śatruratyantaṁ pārthivāḥ sātvatīsutaḥ ,
sātvatānāṁ nṛśaṁsātmā na hito'napakāriṇām.
6. eṣa naḥ śatruḥ atyantam pārthivāḥ sātvatīsutaḥ
sātvatānām nṛśaṃsātmā na hitaḥ anapakāriṇām
6. O kings, this son of Sātvatī is our absolute enemy. His nature (ātman) is cruel towards the Sātvatas, and he is not benevolent even to those who cause him no harm.
प्राग्ज्योतिषपुरं यातानस्माञ्ज्ञात्वा नृशंसकृत् ।
अदहद्द्वारकामेष स्वस्रीयः सन्नराधिपाः ॥७॥
7. prāgjyotiṣapuraṁ yātānasmāñjñātvā nṛśaṁsakṛt ,
adahaddvārakāmeṣa svasrīyaḥ sannarādhipāḥ.
7. prāgjyotiṣapuram yātān asmān jñātvā nṛśaṃsakṛt
adahat dvārakām eṣa svasrīyaḥ san narādhipāḥ
7. O kings, knowing that we had gone to Prāgjyotiṣapura, this cruel individual burned Dvārakā, even though he was our own nephew.
क्रीडतो भोजराजन्यानेष रैवतके गिरौ ।
हत्वा बद्ध्वा च तान्सर्वानुपायात्स्वपुरं पुरा ॥८॥
8. krīḍato bhojarājanyāneṣa raivatake girau ,
hatvā baddhvā ca tānsarvānupāyātsvapuraṁ purā.
8. krīḍataḥ bhojarājanyān eṣa raivatake girau
hatvā baddhvā ca tān sarvān upāyāt svapuram purā
8. Formerly, this individual (Kṛṣṇa), having killed and captured all those Bhoja and Rājanya kings who were engaged in sport on Mount Raivataka, returned to his own city.
अश्वमेधे हयं मेध्यमुत्सृष्टं रक्षिभिर्वृतम् ।
पितुर्मे यज्ञविघ्नार्थमहरत्पापनिश्चयः ॥९॥
9. aśvamedhe hayaṁ medhyamutsṛṣṭaṁ rakṣibhirvṛtam ,
piturme yajñavighnārthamaharatpāpaniścayaḥ.
9. aśvamedhe hayam medhyam utsṛṣṭam rakṣibhiḥ vṛtam
pituḥ me yajñavighnārtham aharat pāpaniścayaḥ
9. This evil-minded one (pāpaniścaya), for the purpose of obstructing my father's horse sacrifice (aśvamedha), carried away the sacrificial (medhya) horse that had been released and was surrounded by guards.
सौवीरान्प्रतिपत्तौ च बभ्रोरेष यशस्विनः ।
भार्यामभ्यहरन्मोहादकामां तामितो गताम् ॥१०॥
10. sauvīrānpratipattau ca babhroreṣa yaśasvinaḥ ,
bhāryāmabhyaharanmohādakāmāṁ tāmito gatām.
10. sauvīrān pratipattau ca babhroḥ eṣa yaśasvinaḥ
bhāryām abhyaharan mohāt akāmām tām itaḥ gatām
10. This glorious Babhru, in the matter of the Sauvīras, out of delusion (moha), abducted his unwilling wife, who had gone there.
एष मायाप्रतिच्छन्नः करूषार्थे तपस्विनीम् ।
जहार भद्रां वैशालीं मातुलस्य नृशंसकृत् ॥११॥
11. eṣa māyāpraticchannaḥ karūṣārthe tapasvinīm ,
jahāra bhadrāṁ vaiśālīṁ mātulasya nṛśaṁsakṛt.
11. eṣa māyāpraticchannaḥ karūṣārthe tapasvinīm
jahāra bhadrām vaiśālīm mātulasya nṛśaṃsakṛt
11. This cruel person, disguised by illusion (māyā), abducted the ascetic Bhadrā, a princess from Vaiśālī, for his maternal uncle's sake concerning the Karūṣas.
पितृष्वसुः कृते दुःखं सुमहन्मर्षयाम्यहम् ।
दिष्ट्या त्विदं सर्वराज्ञां संनिधावद्य वर्तते ॥१२॥
12. pitṛṣvasuḥ kṛte duḥkhaṁ sumahanmarṣayāmyaham ,
diṣṭyā tvidaṁ sarvarājñāṁ saṁnidhāvadya vartate.
12. pitṛṣvasuḥ kṛte duḥkham sumahat marṣayāmi aham
diṣṭyā tu idam sarvarājñām saṃnidhau adya vartate
12. I endure this very great sorrow on account of my paternal aunt. Fortunately, this matter is now unfolding in the presence of all kings.
पश्यन्ति हि भवन्तोऽद्य मय्यतीव व्यतिक्रमम् ।
कृतानि तु परोक्षं मे यानि तानि निबोधत ॥१३॥
13. paśyanti hi bhavanto'dya mayyatīva vyatikramam ,
kṛtāni tu parokṣaṁ me yāni tāni nibodhata.
13. paśyanti hi bhavantaḥ adya mayi atīva vyatikramam
kṛtāni tu parokṣam me yāni tāni nibodhata
13. Indeed, you all now observe a great transgression in me. But concerning those deeds of mine that were performed secretly, please understand them.
इमं त्वस्य न शक्ष्यामि क्षन्तुमद्य व्यतिक्रमम् ।
अवलेपाद्वधार्हस्य समग्रे राजमण्डले ॥१४॥
14. imaṁ tvasya na śakṣyāmi kṣantumadya vyatikramam ,
avalepādvadhārhasya samagre rājamaṇḍale.
14. imam tu asya na śakṣyāmi kṣantum adya vyatikramam
avalepāt vadhārhasya samagre rājamaṇḍale
14. Today, I cannot forgive this transgression of his. This man, deserving of death, committed this offense out of sheer arrogance in front of the entire assembly of kings.
रुक्मिण्यामस्य मूढस्य प्रार्थनासीन्मुमूर्षतः ।
न च तां प्राप्तवान्मूढः शूद्रो वेदश्रुतिं यथा ॥१५॥
15. rukmiṇyāmasya mūḍhasya prārthanāsīnmumūrṣataḥ ,
na ca tāṁ prāptavānmūḍhaḥ śūdro vedaśrutiṁ yathā.
15. rukmiṇyām asya mūḍhasya prārthanā āsīt mumūrṣataḥ
na ca tām prāptavān mūḍhaḥ śūdraḥ vedaśrutim yathā
15. This foolish man, who was as good as dead, had a desire for Rukmiṇī. Yet, this deluded one did not obtain her, just as a Śūdra cannot obtain Vedic knowledge.
एवमादि ततः सर्वे सहितास्ते नराधिपाः ।
वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा चेदिराजं व्यगर्हयन् ॥१६॥
16. evamādi tataḥ sarve sahitāste narādhipāḥ ,
vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā cedirājaṁ vyagarhayan.
16. evamādi tataḥ sarve sahitāḥ te narādhipāḥ
vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā cedirājam vyagarhayan
16. After hearing the words of Vāsudeva (Krishna), all those assembled kings thus censured the King of Cedī.
ततस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा शिशुपालः प्रतापवान् ।
जहास स्वनवद्धासं प्रहस्येदमुवाच ह ॥१७॥
17. tatastadvacanaṁ śrutvā śiśupālaḥ pratāpavān ,
jahāsa svanavaddhāsaṁ prahasyedamuvāca ha.
17. tataḥ tat vacanam śrutvā śiśupālaḥ pratāpavān
jahāsa svanavat hāsam prahasya idam uvāca ha
17. Then, the mighty Śiśupāla, upon hearing those words, laughed a resounding laugh. After laughing, he indeed spoke these words.
मत्पूर्वां रुक्मिणीं कृष्ण संसत्सु परिकीर्तयन् ।
विशेषतः पार्थिवेषु व्रीडां न कुरुषे कथम् ॥१८॥
18. matpūrvāṁ rukmiṇīṁ kṛṣṇa saṁsatsu parikīrtayan ,
viśeṣataḥ pārthiveṣu vrīḍāṁ na kuruṣe katham.
18. mat-pūrvām rukmiṇīm kṛṣṇa saṃsatsu parikīrtayan
viśeṣataḥ pārthiveṣu vrīḍām na kuruṣe katham
18. O Krishna, how is it that you do not feel shame (vrīḍā) when you proclaim Rukmini, who was previously mine, in assemblies, especially among kings?
मन्यमानो हि कः सत्सु पुरुषः परिकीर्तयेत् ।
अन्यपूर्वां स्त्रियं जातु त्वदन्यो मधुसूदन ॥१९॥
19. manyamāno hi kaḥ satsu puruṣaḥ parikīrtayet ,
anyapūrvāṁ striyaṁ jātu tvadanyo madhusūdana.
19. manyamānaḥ hi kaḥ satsu puruṣaḥ parikīrtayet
anyapūrvām striyam jātu tvat anyaḥ madhusūdana
19. Indeed, what man (puruṣa), considering (what is proper), would ever proclaim a woman who was previously betrothed to another, in assemblies of good people? Who but you, O Madhusūdana (madhusūdana)?
क्षम वा यदि ते श्रद्धा मा वा कृष्ण मम क्षम ।
क्रुद्धाद्वापि प्रसन्नाद्वा किं मे त्वत्तो भविष्यति ॥२०॥
20. kṣama vā yadi te śraddhā mā vā kṛṣṇa mama kṣama ,
kruddhādvāpi prasannādvā kiṁ me tvatto bhaviṣyati.
20. kṣama vā yadi te śraddhā mā vā kṛṣṇa mama kṣama
kruddhāt vā api prasannāt vā kim me tvattaḥ bhaviṣyati
20. Forgive me, O Krishna, if you have the inclination (śraddhā) to do so, or do not forgive me. What can I gain from you, whether you are angry or pleased?
तथा ब्रुवत एवास्य भगवान्मधुसूदनः ।
व्यपाहरच्छिरः क्रुद्धश्चक्रेणामित्रकर्षणः ।
स पपात महाबाहुर्वज्राहत इवाचलः ॥२१॥
21. tathā bruvata evāsya bhagavānmadhusūdanaḥ ,
vyapāharacchiraḥ kruddhaścakreṇāmitrakarṣaṇaḥ ,
sa papāta mahābāhurvajrāhata ivācalaḥ.
21. tathā bruvataḥ eva asya bhagavān
madhusūdanaḥ vyapāharat śiraḥ kruddhaḥ
cakreṇa amitrakarṣaṇaḥ | sa
papāta mahābāhuḥ vajrāhataḥ iva acalaḥ
21. As he was speaking thus, the glorious (bhagavān) Madhusūdana (madhusūdana), who destroys his enemies (amitrakarṣaṇa) and was enraged, severed his head with his discus. The mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Śiśupāla then fell like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt (vajra).
ततश्चेदिपतेर्देहात्तेजोऽग्र्यं ददृशुर्नृपाः ।
उत्पतन्तं महाराज गगनादिव भास्करम् ॥२२॥
22. tataścedipaterdehāttejo'gryaṁ dadṛśurnṛpāḥ ,
utpatantaṁ mahārāja gaganādiva bhāskaram.
22. tataḥ ca cedipateḥ dehāt tejaḥ agryaṃ dadṛśuḥ
nṛpāḥ utpatantaṃ mahārāja gaganāt iva bhāskaram
22. Then, O great king, the kings saw an excellent light (tejaḥ) rising from the body of the Cedi king, just as the sun rises from the sky.
ततः कमलपत्राक्षं कृष्णं लोकनमस्कृतम् ।
ववन्दे तत्तदा तेजो विवेश च नराधिप ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ kamalapatrākṣaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ lokanamaskṛtam ,
vavande tattadā tejo viveśa ca narādhipa.
23. tataḥ kamalapatrākṣaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ lokanamaskṛtam
vavande tat tadā tejaḥ viveśa ca narādhipa
23. Then, O king of men, that light (tejaḥ) saluted Kṛṣṇa, who has eyes like lotus petals and is revered by all worlds, and then it entered him.
तदद्भुतममन्यन्त दृष्ट्वा सर्वे महीक्षितः ।
यद्विवेश महाबाहुं तत्तेजः पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥२४॥
24. tadadbhutamamanyanta dṛṣṭvā sarve mahīkṣitaḥ ,
yadviveśa mahābāhuṁ tattejaḥ puruṣottamam.
24. tat adbhutam amanyanta dṛṣṭvā sarve mahīkṣitaḥ
yat viveśa mahābāhuṃ tat tejaḥ puruṣottamam
24. All the kings, having witnessed that, considered it truly astounding—that very light (tejaḥ) which entered the mighty-armed supreme person (puruṣottama).
अनभ्रे प्रववर्ष द्यौः पपात ज्वलिताशनिः ।
कृष्णेन निहते चैद्ये चचाल च वसुंधरा ॥२५॥
25. anabhre pravavarṣa dyauḥ papāta jvalitāśaniḥ ,
kṛṣṇena nihate caidye cacāla ca vasuṁdharā.
25. anabhre pravarvarṣa dyauḥ papāta jvalitāśaniḥ
kṛṣṇena nihate caidye cacāla ca vasundharā
25. The sky (dyauḥ) rained without clouds, and a flaming thunderbolt fell. When the Cedi king was slain by Kṛṣṇa, the earth (vasundharā) trembled.
ततः केचिन्महीपाला नाब्रुवंस्तत्र किंचन ।
अतीतवाक्पथे काले प्रेक्षमाणा जनार्दनम् ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ kecinmahīpālā nābruvaṁstatra kiṁcana ,
atītavākpathe kāle prekṣamāṇā janārdanam.
26. tataḥ kecit mahīpālāḥ na abruvan tatra kiñcana
atītavākpathe kāle prekṣamāṇāḥ janārdanam
26. Then, while observing Janardana (Krishna), some kings remained silent, not uttering anything there, as the opportune moment for speaking had passed.
हस्तैर्हस्ताग्रमपरे प्रत्यपीषन्नमर्षिताः ।
अपरे दशनैरोष्ठानदशन्क्रोधमूर्छिताः ॥२७॥
27. hastairhastāgramapare pratyapīṣannamarṣitāḥ ,
apare daśanairoṣṭhānadaśankrodhamūrchitāḥ.
27. hastaiḥ hastāgram apare prati apīṣan amarṣitāḥ
apare daśanaiḥ oṣṭhān adaśan krodhamūrcitāḥ
27. Others, filled with indignation, clenched their fists (lit. pressed their palms with their hands). And still others, overcome by rage, bit their lips with their teeth.
रहस्तु केचिद्वार्ष्णेयं प्रशशंसुर्नराधिपाः ।
केचिदेव तु संरब्धा मध्यस्थास्त्वपरेऽभवन् ॥२८॥
28. rahastu kecidvārṣṇeyaṁ praśaśaṁsurnarādhipāḥ ,
kecideva tu saṁrabdhā madhyasthāstvapare'bhavan.
28. rahaḥ tu kecit vārṣṇeyam praśaśaṃsuḥ narādhipāḥ
kecit eva tu saṃrabdhāḥ madhyasthāḥ tu apare abhavan
28. Some kings, however, praised Vārṣṇeya (Krishna) in private. But others, indeed, were greatly agitated, while still others remained neutral.
प्रहृष्टाः केशवं जग्मुः संस्तुवन्तो महर्षयः ।
ब्राह्मणाश्च महात्मानः पार्थिवाश्च महाबलाः ॥२९॥
29. prahṛṣṭāḥ keśavaṁ jagmuḥ saṁstuvanto maharṣayaḥ ,
brāhmaṇāśca mahātmānaḥ pārthivāśca mahābalāḥ.
29. prahr̥ṣṭāḥ keśavam jagmuḥ saṃstuvantaḥ maharṣayaḥ
brāhmaṇāḥ ca mahātmānaḥ pārthivāḥ ca mahābalāḥ
29. The delighted great sages, along with noble-minded Brahmins and very powerful kings, went to Keśava (Krishna), praising him.
पाण्डवस्त्वब्रवीद्भ्रातॄन्सत्कारेण महीपतिम् ।
दमघोषात्मजं वीरं संसाधयत मा चिरम् ।
तथा च कृतवन्तस्ते भ्रातुर्वै शासनं तदा ॥३०॥
30. pāṇḍavastvabravīdbhrātṝnsatkāreṇa mahīpatim ,
damaghoṣātmajaṁ vīraṁ saṁsādhayata mā ciram ,
tathā ca kṛtavantaste bhrāturvai śāsanaṁ tadā.
30. pāṇḍavaḥ tu abravīt bhrātṝn satkāreṇa
mahīpatim damaghoṣātmajam vīram
saṃsādhayata mā ciram tathā ca
kṛtavantaḥ te bhrātuḥ vai śāsanam tadā
30. The Pāṇḍava, however, told his brothers, "With honor (satkāra), bring forth the king, the heroic son of Damaghoṣa, without delay!" And they indeed carried out their brother's command then.
चेदीनामाधिपत्ये च पुत्रमस्य महीपतिम् ।
अभ्यषिञ्चत्तदा पार्थः सह तैर्वसुधाधिपैः ॥३१॥
31. cedīnāmādhipatye ca putramasya mahīpatim ,
abhyaṣiñcattadā pārthaḥ saha tairvasudhādhipaiḥ.
31. cedīnām ādhipatye ca putram asya mahīpatim
abhyaṣiñcat tadā pārthaḥ saha taiḥ vasudhādhipaiḥ
31. And then Pārtha, along with those kings, anointed his son as king over the dominion (ādhipatya) of the Cedis.
ततः स कुरुराजस्य क्रतुः सर्वसमृद्धिमान् ।
यूनां प्रीतिकरो राजन्संबभौ विपुलौजसः ॥३२॥
32. tataḥ sa kururājasya kratuḥ sarvasamṛddhimān ,
yūnāṁ prītikaro rājansaṁbabhau vipulaujasaḥ.
32. tataḥ sa kururājasya kratuḥ sarvasamṛddhimān
yūnām prītikaḥ rājan saṃbabhau vipulaujasaḥ
32. Then, that ritual (kratu) of the Kuru king, filled with all prosperity, and delightful to the young men, O King, shone with immense splendor.
शान्तविघ्नः सुखारम्भः प्रभूतधनधान्यवान् ।
अन्नवान्बहुभक्ष्यश्च केशवेन सुरक्षितः ॥३३॥
33. śāntavighnaḥ sukhārambhaḥ prabhūtadhanadhānyavān ,
annavānbahubhakṣyaśca keśavena surakṣitaḥ.
33. śāntavighnaḥ sukhārambhaḥ prabhūtadhanadhānyavān
annavān bahubhakṣyaḥ ca keśavena surakṣitaḥ
33. That ritual was free from obstacles, with a pleasant (sukha) commencement (ārambha), abundant in wealth (dhana) and grain (dhānya), rich in food (anna) and many kinds of edibles (bhakṣya), and well-protected by Keśava.
समापयामास च तं राजसूयं महाक्रतुम् ।
तं तु यज्ञं महाबाहुरा समाप्तेर्जनार्दनः ।
ररक्ष भगवाञ्शौरिः शार्ङ्गचक्रगदाधरः ॥३४॥
34. samāpayāmāsa ca taṁ rājasūyaṁ mahākratum ,
taṁ tu yajñaṁ mahābāhurā samāpterjanārdanaḥ ,
rarakṣa bhagavāñśauriḥ śārṅgacakragadādharaḥ.
34. samāpayāmāsa ca tam rājasūyam
mahākratum | tam tu yajñam mahābāhuḥ ā
samāpteḥ janārdanaḥ | rarakṣa
bhagavān śauriḥ śārṅgacakragadādharaḥ
34. And he completed that great royal consecration (rājasūya) sacrifice. Indeed, the mighty-armed Janārdana, the divine Śauri (Kṛṣṇa), who bore the Śārṅga bow, discus, and mace, protected that sacrifice until its very completion.
ततस्त्ववभृथस्नातं धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
समस्तं पार्थिवं क्षत्रमभिगम्येदमब्रवीत् ॥३५॥
35. tatastvavabhṛthasnātaṁ dharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
samastaṁ pārthivaṁ kṣatramabhigamyedamabravīt.
35. tataḥ tu avabhṛthasnātam dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
| samastam pārthivam kṣatram abhigamya idam abravīt
35. Then, all the kings and warriors approached Yudhiṣṭhira, the King of righteousness (dharma), who had bathed after the ceremonial `avabhṛtha` bath, and spoke to him thus.
दिष्ट्या वर्धसि धर्मज्ञ साम्राज्यं प्राप्तवान्विभो ।
आजमीढाजमीढानां यशः संवर्धितं त्वया ।
कर्मणैतेन राजेन्द्र धर्मश्च सुमहान्कृतः ॥३६॥
36. diṣṭyā vardhasi dharmajña sāmrājyaṁ prāptavānvibho ,
ājamīḍhājamīḍhānāṁ yaśaḥ saṁvardhitaṁ tvayā ,
karmaṇaitena rājendra dharmaśca sumahānkṛtaḥ.
36. diṣṭyā vardhasi dharmajña sāmrājyam
prāptavān vibho | ājamīḍhājāmīḍhānām
yaśaḥ samvardhitam tvayā | karmaṇā
etena rājendra dharmaḥ ca sumahān kṛtaḥ
36. By good fortune, O knower of righteousness (dharma), O lord, you are prospering, having attained sovereignty. The fame of the Ajāmīḍhas has been greatly enhanced by you. And through this deed, O chief of kings, a truly great righteousness (dharma) has been established.
आपृच्छामो नरव्याघ्र सर्वकामैः सुपूजिताः ।
स्वराष्ट्राणि गमिष्यामस्तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥३७॥
37. āpṛcchāmo naravyāghra sarvakāmaiḥ supūjitāḥ ,
svarāṣṭrāṇi gamiṣyāmastadanujñātumarhasi.
37. āpṛcchāmaḥ naravyāghra sarvakāmaiḥ supūjitāḥ
| svarāṣṭrāṇi gamiṣyāmaḥ tat anujñātum arhasi
37. O tiger among men (naravyāghra), we, having been thoroughly honored with all our desires fulfilled, now bid farewell. We intend to return to our own kingdoms, and therefore, you should grant us permission for that.
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं राज्ञां धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
यथार्हं पूज्य नृपतीन्भ्रातॄन्सर्वानुवाच ह ॥३८॥
38. śrutvā tu vacanaṁ rājñāṁ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
yathārhaṁ pūjya nṛpatīnbhrātṝnsarvānuvāca ha.
38. śrutvā tu vacanam rājñām dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
yathārham pūjya nṛpatīn bhrātṝn sarvān uvāca ha
38. Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharma), having heard the words of the kings, appropriately honored those rulers and then spoke to all his brothers.
राजानः सर्व एवैते प्रीत्यास्मान्समुपागताः ।
प्रस्थिताः स्वानि राष्ट्राणि मामापृच्छ्य परंतपाः ।
तेऽनुव्रजत भद्रं वो विषयान्तं नृपोत्तमान् ॥३९॥
39. rājānaḥ sarva evaite prītyāsmānsamupāgatāḥ ,
prasthitāḥ svāni rāṣṭrāṇi māmāpṛcchya paraṁtapāḥ ,
te'nuvrajata bhadraṁ vo viṣayāntaṁ nṛpottamān.
39. rājānaḥ sarve eva ete prītyā asmān
samupāgatāḥ prasthitāḥ svāni rāṣṭrāṇi
mām apṛcchya parantapāḥ te anuvrajata
bhadram vaḥ viṣayāntam nṛpottamān
39. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O tormentors of foes (parantapa), all these kings came to us with affection. They have now departed for their own kingdoms without taking leave of me. Therefore, you (my brothers) should accompany these excellent kings up to the border of their territories. May good fortune be upon you!'
भ्रातुर्वचनमाज्ञाय पाण्डवा धर्मचारिणः ।
यथार्हं नृपमुख्यांस्तानेकैकं समनुव्रजन् ॥४०॥
40. bhrāturvacanamājñāya pāṇḍavā dharmacāriṇaḥ ,
yathārhaṁ nṛpamukhyāṁstānekaikaṁ samanuvrajan.
40. bhrātuḥ vacanam ājñāya pāṇḍavāḥ dharmacāriṇaḥ
yathārham nṛpamukhyān tān ekaikam samanuvrajan
40. The Pāṇḍavas, who adhered to righteousness (dharma), understanding their brother's instruction, accompanied those principal kings one by one, as was appropriate.
विराटमन्वयात्तूर्णं धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रतापवान् ।
धनंजयो यज्ञसेनं महात्मानं महारथः ॥४१॥
41. virāṭamanvayāttūrṇaṁ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pratāpavān ,
dhanaṁjayo yajñasenaṁ mahātmānaṁ mahārathaḥ.
41. virāṭam anvayāt tūrṇam dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pratāpavān
dhanañjayaḥ yajñasenam mahātmānam mahārathaḥ
41. The mighty Dhṛṣṭadyumna swiftly followed King Virāṭa. Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), the great charioteer, accompanied the magnanimous, great-souled (mahātman) King Yajñasena (Drupada).
भीष्मं च धृतराष्ट्रं च भीमसेनो महाबलः ।
द्रोणं च ससुतं वीरं सहदेवो महारथः ॥४२॥
42. bhīṣmaṁ ca dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ ca bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ,
droṇaṁ ca sasutaṁ vīraṁ sahadevo mahārathaḥ.
42. bhīṣmam ca dhṛtarāṣṭram ca bhīmasenaḥ mahābalaḥ
droṇam ca sasutam vīram sahadevaḥ mahārathaḥ
42. The greatly powerful Bhimasena [honored] Bhishma and Dhritarashtra, and the great charioteer Sahadeva [honored] the hero Drona along with his son.
नकुलः सुबलं राजन्सहपुत्रं समन्वयात् ।
द्रौपदेयाः ससौभद्राः पार्वतीयान्महीपतीन् ॥४३॥
43. nakulaḥ subalaṁ rājansahaputraṁ samanvayāt ,
draupadeyāḥ sasaubhadrāḥ pārvatīyānmahīpatīn.
43. nakulaḥ subalam rājan sahaputram samanvayāt
draupadeyāḥ sasaubhadrāḥ pārvatīyān mahīpatīn
43. O King, Nakula [honored] Subala along with his son in an agreeable manner, and the sons of Draupadi (Draupadeyas) with the son of Subhadra (Saubhadras) [honored] the mountain kings.
अन्वगच्छंस्तथैवान्यान्क्षत्रियान्क्षत्रियर्षभाः ।
एवं संपूजितास्ते वै जग्मुर्विप्राश्च सर्वशः ॥४४॥
44. anvagacchaṁstathaivānyānkṣatriyānkṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ,
evaṁ saṁpūjitāste vai jagmurviprāśca sarvaśaḥ.
44. anvagacchan tatha eva anyān kṣatriyān kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
evam sampūjitāḥ te vai jagmuḥ viprāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
44. The foremost among warriors (kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ) followed other warriors (kṣatriyān) in the same way. Thus, having been honored, they indeed departed, and the Brahmins also departed completely.
गतेषु पार्थिवेन्द्रेषु सर्वेषु भरतर्षभ ।
युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं वासुदेवः प्रतापवान् ॥४५॥
45. gateṣu pārthivendreṣu sarveṣu bharatarṣabha ,
yudhiṣṭhiramuvācedaṁ vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān.
45. gateṣu pārthivendreṣu sarveṣu bharatarṣabha
yudhiṣṭhiram uvāca idam vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān
45. O best of Bharatas, when all the chief kings had departed, the glorious Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) spoke these words to Yudhiṣṭhira.
आपृच्छे त्वां गमिष्यामि द्वारकां कुरुनन्दन ।
राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं दिष्ट्या त्वं प्राप्तवानसि ॥४६॥
46. āpṛcche tvāṁ gamiṣyāmi dvārakāṁ kurunandana ,
rājasūyaṁ kratuśreṣṭhaṁ diṣṭyā tvaṁ prāptavānasi.
46. āpṛcche tvām gamiṣyāmi dvārakām kurunandana
rājasūyam kratuśreṣṭham diṣṭyā tvam prāptavān asi
46. kurunandana tvām āpṛcche dvārakām gamiṣyāmi
diṣṭyā tvam rājasūyam kratuśreṣṭham prāptavān asi
46. O scion of Kuru, I bid you farewell and shall depart for Dvaraka. Fortunately, you have successfully performed the Rājasūya, the foremost of Vedic rituals (kratu).
तमुवाचैवमुक्तस्तु धर्मराण्मधुसूदनम् ।
तव प्रसादाद्गोविन्द प्राप्तवानस्मि वै क्रतुम् ॥४७॥
47. tamuvācaivamuktastu dharmarāṇmadhusūdanam ,
tava prasādādgovinda prāptavānasmi vai kratum.
47. tam uvāca evam uktaḥ tu dharmarāṭ madhusūdanam
tava prasādāt govinda prāptavān asmi vai kratum
47. evam uktaḥ tu dharmarāṭ tam madhusūdanam uvāca
govinda tava prasādāt aham vai kratum prāptavān asmi
47. When thus addressed, the King of natural law (dharmarāj Yudhiṣṭhira) replied to Madhusūdana (Krishna): 'By your grace, O Govinda, I have indeed successfully accomplished this Vedic ritual (kratu).'
समस्तं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं त्वत्प्रसादाद्वशानुगम् ।
उपादाय बलिं मुख्यं मामेव समुपस्थितम् ॥४८॥
48. samastaṁ pārthivaṁ kṣatraṁ tvatprasādādvaśānugam ,
upādāya baliṁ mukhyaṁ māmeva samupasthitam.
48. samastam pārthivam kṣatram tvatprasādāt vaśānugam
upādāya balim mukhyam mām eva samupasthitam
48. By your grace, the entire earthly warrior class (kṣatra) became subservient, bringing their main tribute and presenting themselves to me alone.
न वयं त्वामृते वीर रंस्यामेह कथंचन ।
अवश्यं चापि गन्तव्या त्वया द्वारवती पुरी ॥४९॥
49. na vayaṁ tvāmṛte vīra raṁsyāmeha kathaṁcana ,
avaśyaṁ cāpi gantavyā tvayā dvāravatī purī.
49. na vayam tvām ṛte vīra raṃsyāmeh kathaṃcana
avaśyam ca api gantavyā tvayā dvāravatī purī
49. O hero, we will certainly not find joy without you in any way. Furthermore, the city of Dvārakā must surely be visited by you.
एवमुक्तः स धर्मात्मा युधिष्ठिरसहायवान् ।
अभिगम्याब्रवीत्प्रीतः पृथां पृथुयशा हरिः ॥५०॥
50. evamuktaḥ sa dharmātmā yudhiṣṭhirasahāyavān ,
abhigamyābravītprītaḥ pṛthāṁ pṛthuyaśā hariḥ.
50. evam uktaḥ saḥ dharmātmā yudhiṣṭhirasahāyavān
abhigamya abravīt prītaḥ pṛthām pṛthuyaśāḥ hariḥ
50. Being thus addressed, that righteous-souled (dharma) Hari (Krishna), who was of great renown and had Yudhiṣṭhira as his companion, approached Pṛthā and spoke, feeling very pleased.
साम्राज्यं समनुप्राप्ताः पुत्रास्तेऽद्य पितृष्वसः ।
सिद्धार्था वसुमन्तश्च सा त्वं प्रीतिमवाप्नुहि ॥५१॥
51. sāmrājyaṁ samanuprāptāḥ putrāste'dya pitṛṣvasaḥ ,
siddhārthā vasumantaśca sā tvaṁ prītimavāpnuhi.
51. sāmrājyam samanuprāptāḥ putrāḥ te adya pitṛṣvasaḥ
siddhārthāḥ vasumantaḥ ca sā tvam prītim avāpnuhi
51. O paternal aunt, your sons have now attained imperial dominion; their aims are fulfilled, and they are prosperous. Therefore, you should now experience great joy.
अनुज्ञातस्त्वया चाहं द्वारकां गन्तुमुत्सहे ।
सुभद्रां द्रौपदीं चैव सभाजयत केशवः ॥५२॥
52. anujñātastvayā cāhaṁ dvārakāṁ gantumutsahe ,
subhadrāṁ draupadīṁ caiva sabhājayata keśavaḥ.
52. anujñātaḥ tvayā ca aham dvārakām gantum utsahe
subhadrām draupadīm ca eva sabhājayata keśavaḥ
52. Permitted by you, I am eager to go to Dvārakā. Let Keśava honor Subhadrā and Draupadī.
निष्क्रम्यान्तःपुराच्चैव युधिष्ठिरसहायवान् ।
स्नातश्च कृतजप्यश्च ब्राह्मणान्स्वस्ति वाच्य च ॥५३॥
53. niṣkramyāntaḥpurāccaiva yudhiṣṭhirasahāyavān ,
snātaśca kṛtajapyaśca brāhmaṇānsvasti vācya ca.
53. niṣkramya antaḥpurāt ca eva yudhiṣṭhirasahāyavān
snātaḥ ca kṛtajapyaḥ ca brāhmaṇān svasti vācya ca
53. Having exited from the inner apartments, and accompanied by Yudhiṣṭhira, he bathed, performed his sacred recitations (mantra), and then requested the brāhmaṇas to pronounce blessings.
ततो मेघवरप्रख्यं स्यन्दनं वै सुकल्पितम् ।
योजयित्वा महाराज दारुकः प्रत्युपस्थितः ॥५४॥
54. tato meghavaraprakhyaṁ syandanaṁ vai sukalpitam ,
yojayitvā mahārāja dārukaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ.
54. tataḥ meghavaraprakhyam syandanam vai sukalpitam
yojayitvā mahārāja dārukaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ
54. Then, O great king, Daruka appeared, having prepared the excellently equipped chariot that resembled a magnificent cloud.
उपस्थितं रथं दृष्ट्वा तार्क्ष्यप्रवरकेतनम् ।
प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य समारुह्य महामनाः ।
प्रययौ पुण्डरीकाक्षस्ततो द्वारवतीं पुरीम् ॥५५॥
55. upasthitaṁ rathaṁ dṛṣṭvā tārkṣyapravaraketanam ,
pradakṣiṇamupāvṛtya samāruhya mahāmanāḥ ,
prayayau puṇḍarīkākṣastato dvāravatīṁ purīm.
55. upasthitam ratham dṛṣṭvā
tārkṣyapravaraketanam pradakṣiṇam upāvṛtya
samāruhya mahāmanāḥ prayayau
puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ tataḥ dvāravatīm purīm
55. Having seen the chariot, which bore the emblem of the supreme Garuda and stood ready, the great-souled, lotus-eyed one (Krishna) circumambulated it clockwise, mounted it, and then departed for the city of Dvaravati.
तं पद्भ्यामनुवव्राज धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
भ्रातृभिः सहितः श्रीमान्वासुदेवं महाबलम् ॥५६॥
56. taṁ padbhyāmanuvavrāja dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ śrīmānvāsudevaṁ mahābalam.
56. tam padbhyām anuvavrāja dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ śrīmān vāsudevam mahābalam
56. King Yudhishthira (dharmarājaḥ), glorious and accompanied by his brothers, followed the mighty Vasudeva (Krishna) on foot.
ततो मुहूर्तं संगृह्य स्यन्दनप्रवरं हरिः ।
अब्रवीत्पुण्डरीकाक्षः कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥५७॥
57. tato muhūrtaṁ saṁgṛhya syandanapravaraṁ hariḥ ,
abravītpuṇḍarīkākṣaḥ kuntīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
57. tataḥ muhūrtam saṃgṛhya syandanapravaram hariḥ
abravīt puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ kuntīputram yudhiṣṭhiram
57. Then, having paused for a moment to take hold of the excellent chariot, Hari (Krishna), the lotus-eyed one, spoke to Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti.
अप्रमत्तः स्थितो नित्यं प्रजाः पाहि विशां पते ।
पर्जन्यमिव भूतानि महाद्रुममिवाण्डजाः ।
बान्धवास्त्वोपजीवन्तु सहस्राक्षमिवामराः ॥५८॥
58. apramattaḥ sthito nityaṁ prajāḥ pāhi viśāṁ pate ,
parjanyamiva bhūtāni mahādrumamivāṇḍajāḥ ,
bāndhavāstvopajīvantu sahasrākṣamivāmarāḥ.
58. apramattaḥ sthitaḥ nityam prajāḥ pāhi
viśām pate | parjanyam iva bhūtāni
mahādrumam iva aṇḍajāḥ | bāndhavāḥ
tu upajīvantu sahasrākṣam iva amarāḥ
58. O lord of the people, remain ever vigilant and protect your subjects. May all beings depend on you just as they depend on the rain-god Parjanya, and may the egg-born creatures (birds) depend on you as they depend on a great tree. Furthermore, may your kinsmen depend on you just as the immortal gods depend on Indra, the thousand-eyed one.
कृत्वा परस्परेणैवं संविदं कृष्णपाण्डवौ ।
अन्योन्यं समनुज्ञाप्य जग्मतुः स्वगृहान्प्रति ॥५९॥
59. kṛtvā paraspareṇaivaṁ saṁvidaṁ kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau ,
anyonyaṁ samanujñāpya jagmatuḥ svagṛhānprati.
59. kṛtvā paraspareṇa evam saṃvidam kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau
| anyonyam samanujñāpya jagmatuḥ svagṛhān prati
59. Having thus made a mutual agreement (saṃvid) with each other, Kṛṣṇa and the Pāṇḍavas, after bidding farewell to one another, both departed towards their own homes.
गते द्वारवतीं कृष्णे सात्वतप्रवरे नृप ।
एको दुर्योधनो राजा शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
तस्यां सभायां दिव्यायामूषतुस्तौ नरर्षभौ ॥६०॥
60. gate dvāravatīṁ kṛṣṇe sātvatapravare nṛpa ,
eko duryodhano rājā śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ ,
tasyāṁ sabhāyāṁ divyāyāmūṣatustau nararṣabhau.
60. gate dvāravatīm kṛṣṇe sātvatapravare
nṛpa | ekaḥ duryodhanaḥ rājā
śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ | tasyām
sabhāyām divyāyām ūṣatuḥ tau nararṣabhau
60. O King, after Kṛṣṇa, the foremost among the Sātvatas, had departed for Dvārakā, then King Duryodhana and also Śakuni, the son of Subala, those two best among men, remained in that magnificent assembly hall.
