वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः स पाण्डवो भूयो मार्कण्डेयमुवाच ह ।
कथयस्वेह चरितं मनोर्वैवस्वतस्य मे ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ sa pāṇḍavo bhūyo mārkaṇḍeyamuvāca ha ,
kathayasveha caritaṁ manorvaivasvatasya me.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then that Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) again spoke to Mārkaṇḍeya: 'Please narrate to me here the story of Vaivasvata Manu.'
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
विवस्वतः सुतो राजन्परमर्षिः प्रतापवान् ।
बभूव नरशार्दूल प्रजापतिसमद्युतिः ॥२॥
2. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
vivasvataḥ suto rājanparamarṣiḥ pratāpavān ,
babhūva naraśārdūla prajāpatisamadyutiḥ.
2. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca vivasvataḥ sutaḥ rājan paramarṣiḥ
pratāpavān babhūva naraśārdūla prajāpatisamadyutiḥ
2. Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'O King (rājan), O tiger among men (naraśārdūla), the son of Vivasvat was a great sage (paramarṣi), glorious and radiant like Prajāpati.'
ओजसा तेजसा लक्ष्म्या तपसा च विशेषतः ।
अतिचक्राम पितरं मनुः स्वं च पितामहम् ॥३॥
3. ojasā tejasā lakṣmyā tapasā ca viśeṣataḥ ,
aticakrāma pitaraṁ manuḥ svaṁ ca pitāmaham.
3. ojasā tejasā lakṣmyā tapasā ca viśeṣataḥ
aticakrāma pitaraṃ manuḥ svaṃ ca pitāmaham
3. Manu surpassed his father and his own grandfather by means of his vigor, splendor, prosperity, and especially by his severe asceticism (tapas).
ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्विशालायां बदर्यां स नराधिपः ।
एकपादस्थितस्तीव्रं चचार सुमहत्तपः ॥४॥
4. ūrdhvabāhurviśālāyāṁ badaryāṁ sa narādhipaḥ ,
ekapādasthitastīvraṁ cacāra sumahattapaḥ.
4. ūrdhvabāhuḥ viśālāyāṃ badaryāṃ sa narādhipaḥ
ekapādasthitaḥ tīvraṃ cacāra sumahat tapas
4. That king, with his arms raised and standing on one foot, performed very great and severe asceticism (tapas) in Badarī, in the region of Viśālā.
अवाक्शिरास्तथा चापि नेत्रैरनिमिषैर्दृढम् ।
सोऽतप्यत तपो घोरं वर्षाणामयुतं तदा ॥५॥
5. avākśirāstathā cāpi netrairanimiṣairdṛḍham ,
so'tapyata tapo ghoraṁ varṣāṇāmayutaṁ tadā.
5. avākśirāḥ tathā ca api netraiḥ animiṣaiḥ dṛḍham
saḥ atapyata tapas ghoraṃ varṣāṇām ayutam tadā
5. And thus, with his head bowed downwards and with unblinking eyes, he then performed terrible asceticism (tapas) intensely for ten thousand years.
तं कदाचित्तपस्यन्तमार्द्रचीरजटाधरम् ।
वीरिणीतीरमागम्य मत्स्यो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. taṁ kadācittapasyantamārdracīrajaṭādharam ,
vīriṇītīramāgamya matsyo vacanamabravīt.
6. taṃ kadācit tapasyantam ārdracīrajaṭādharam
vīriṇītīram āgamya matsyaḥ vacanam abravīt
6. Once, a fish approached him, who was performing asceticism (tapas) and wearing wet bark-garments and matted locks, on the bank of the Vīriṇī and spoke these words.
भगवन्क्षुद्रमत्स्योऽस्मि बलवद्भ्यो भयं मम ।
मत्स्येभ्यो हि ततो मां त्वं त्रातुमर्हसि सुव्रत ॥७॥
7. bhagavankṣudramatsyo'smi balavadbhyo bhayaṁ mama ,
matsyebhyo hi tato māṁ tvaṁ trātumarhasi suvrata.
7. bhagavan kṣudramatsyaḥ asmi balavadbhyaḥ bhayam mama
matsyebhyaḥ hi tataḥ māṃ tvam trātum arhasi suvrata
7. O venerable one, I am a tiny fish, and I fear the powerful ones. Specifically, I am afraid of other fish. Therefore, O virtuous one, you ought to save me.
दुर्बलं बलवन्तो हि मत्स्यं मत्स्या विशेषतः ।
भक्षयन्ति यथा वृत्तिर्विहिता नः सनातनी ॥८॥
8. durbalaṁ balavanto hi matsyaṁ matsyā viśeṣataḥ ,
bhakṣayanti yathā vṛttirvihitā naḥ sanātanī.
8. durbalam balavantaḥ hi matsyām matsyāḥ viśeṣataḥ
bhakṣayanti yathā vṛttiḥ vihitā naḥ sanātanī
8. Indeed, powerful fish devour weak fish, especially other (stronger) fish. This is our eternal, prescribed way of life, our intrinsic nature (dharma).
तस्माद्भयौघान्महतो मज्जन्तं मां विशेषतः ।
त्रातुमर्हसि कर्तास्मि कृते प्रतिकृतं तव ॥९॥
9. tasmādbhayaughānmahato majjantaṁ māṁ viśeṣataḥ ,
trātumarhasi kartāsmi kṛte pratikṛtaṁ tava.
9. tasmāt bhayaughāt mahataḥ majjantam māṃ viśeṣataḥ
trātum arhasi kartā asmi kṛte pratikṛtam tava
9. Therefore, you ought to save me, who am particularly sinking in this great torrent of fear. I shall be one who renders a return (pratikṛtam) for your favor.
स मत्स्यवचनं श्रुत्वा कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः ।
मनुर्वैवस्वतोऽगृह्णात्तं मत्स्यं पाणिना स्वयम् ॥१०॥
10. sa matsyavacanaṁ śrutvā kṛpayābhipariplutaḥ ,
manurvaivasvato'gṛhṇāttaṁ matsyaṁ pāṇinā svayam.
10. saḥ matsyavacanam śrutvā kṛpayā abhipariplutaḥ
manuḥ vaivasvataḥ agṛhṇāt tam matsyam pāṇinā svayam
10. Having heard the fish's words, Manu Vaivasvata, overwhelmed with compassion, himself took that fish with his hand.
उदकान्तमुपानीय मत्स्यं वैवस्वतो मनुः ।
अलिञ्जरे प्राक्षिपत्स चन्द्रांशुसदृशप्रभम् ॥११॥
11. udakāntamupānīya matsyaṁ vaivasvato manuḥ ,
aliñjare prākṣipatsa candrāṁśusadṛśaprabham.
11. udakāntam upanīya matsyam vaivasvataḥ manuḥ
aliñjare prākṣipat sa candrāṃśusadṛśaprabham
11. Having brought the fish to the water's edge, Manu, son of Vivasvat, then placed it into a water-jar (aliñjara). That fish had a luster resembling moonbeams.
स तत्र ववृधे राजन्मत्स्यः परमसत्कृतः ।
पुत्रवच्चाकरोत्तस्मिन्मनुर्भावं विशेषतः ॥१२॥
12. sa tatra vavṛdhe rājanmatsyaḥ paramasatkṛtaḥ ,
putravaccākarottasminmanurbhāvaṁ viśeṣataḥ.
12. sa tatra vavṛdhe rājan matsyaḥ paramasatkaraḥ
putravat ca akarot tasmin manuḥ bhāvam viśeṣataḥ
12. O King, that fish, greatly cherished, grew there. Moreover, Manu developed a special, paternal affection towards it, treating it like his own son.
अथ कालेन महता स मत्स्यः सुमहानभूत् ।
अलिञ्जरे जले चैव नासौ समभवत्किल ॥१३॥
13. atha kālena mahatā sa matsyaḥ sumahānabhūt ,
aliñjare jale caiva nāsau samabhavatkila.
13. atha kālena mahatā sa matsyaḥ sumahān abhūt
aliñjare jale ca eva na asau samabhavat kila
13. Then, after a considerable time, that fish became very large. Indeed, it could no longer fit within the water of the water-jar (aliñjara).
अथ मत्स्यो मनुं दृष्ट्वा पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत ।
भगवन्साधु मेऽद्यान्यत्स्थानं संप्रतिपादय ॥१४॥
14. atha matsyo manuṁ dṛṣṭvā punarevābhyabhāṣata ,
bhagavansādhu me'dyānyatsthānaṁ saṁpratipādaya.
14. atha matsyaḥ manum dṛṣṭvā punaḥ eva abhyabhāṣata
bhagavan sādhu me adya anyat sthānam sampratipāday
14. Then, upon seeing Manu, the fish spoke to him again: "O revered one, please find another suitable place for me today."
उद्धृत्यालिञ्जरात्तस्मात्ततः स भगवान्मुनिः ।
तं मत्स्यमनयद्वापीं महतीं स मनुस्तदा ॥१५॥
15. uddhṛtyāliñjarāttasmāttataḥ sa bhagavānmuniḥ ,
taṁ matsyamanayadvāpīṁ mahatīṁ sa manustadā.
15. uddhṛtya āliñjarāt tasmāt tataḥ sa bhagavān muniḥ
tam matsyam anayat vāpīm mahatīm sa manuḥ tadā
15. Then, that venerable sage (muni), having lifted that fish from the water-pot, took it to a large pond. Manu did so at that time.
तत्र तं प्राक्षिपच्चापि मनुः परपुरंजय ।
अथावर्धत मत्स्यः स पुनर्वर्षगणान्बहून् ॥१६॥
16. tatra taṁ prākṣipaccāpi manuḥ parapuraṁjaya ,
athāvardhata matsyaḥ sa punarvarṣagaṇānbahūn.
16. tatra tam prākṣipat ca api manuḥ parapuraṃjaya
atha avardhata matsyaḥ sa punaḥ varṣagaṇān bahūn
16. And there, O conqueror of enemy cities (parapuraṃjaya), Manu placed that fish. Then, that fish again grew larger for many years.
द्वियोजनायता वापी विस्तृता चापि योजनम् ।
तस्यां नासौ समभवन्मत्स्यो राजीवलोचन ।
विचेष्टितुं वा कौन्तेय मत्स्यो वाप्यां विशां पते ॥१७॥
17. dviyojanāyatā vāpī vistṛtā cāpi yojanam ,
tasyāṁ nāsau samabhavanmatsyo rājīvalocana ,
viceṣṭituṁ vā kaunteya matsyo vāpyāṁ viśāṁ pate.
17. dvīyojanāyatā vāpī vistṛtā ca api
yojanam tasyām na asau samabhavat
matsyaḥ rājīvalocana viceṣṭitum vā
kaunteya matsyaḥ vāpyām viśām pate
17. The pond was two yojanas long and also one yojana broad. In it, O lotus-eyed one (rājīvalocana), that fish was no longer able to move; indeed, O son of Kuntī (kaunteya), O lord of the people (viśāṃ pate), the fish could not even stir in the pond.
मनुं मत्स्यस्ततो दृष्ट्वा पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत ।
नय मां भगवन्साधो समुद्रमहिषीं प्रभो ।
गङ्गां तत्र निवत्स्यामि यथा वा तात मन्यसे ॥१८॥
18. manuṁ matsyastato dṛṣṭvā punarevābhyabhāṣata ,
naya māṁ bhagavansādho samudramahiṣīṁ prabho ,
gaṅgāṁ tatra nivatsyāmi yathā vā tāta manyase.
18. manum matsyaḥ tataḥ dṛṣṭvā punaḥ eva
abhyabhāṣata naya mām bhagavan
sādho samudramahiṣīm prabho gaṅgām
tatra nivatsyāmi yathā vā tāta manyase
18. Then the fish, having seen Manu, spoke to him again: "O venerable one (bhagavan), O virtuous one (sādho), O lord (prabho), take me to the Gaṅgā, who is the ocean's queen (samudramahiṣī). I will reside there, or as you, dear father (tāta), deem appropriate."
एवमुक्तो मनुर्मत्स्यमनयद्भगवान्वशी ।
नदीं गङ्गां तत्र चैनं स्वयं प्राक्षिपदच्युतः ॥१९॥
19. evamukto manurmatsyamanayadbhagavānvaśī ,
nadīṁ gaṅgāṁ tatra cainaṁ svayaṁ prākṣipadacyutaḥ.
19. evam uktaḥ manuḥ matsyam anayat bhagavān vaśī
nadīm gaṅgām tatra ca enam svayam prākṣipat acyutaḥ
19. Thus addressed, Manu, the glorious (bhagavān) and self-controlled one, took the fish. And there, he himself, the infallible (acyuta) one, placed it into the river Ganga.
स तत्र ववृधे मत्स्यः किंचित्कालमरिंदम ।
ततः पुनर्मनुं दृष्ट्वा मत्स्यो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. sa tatra vavṛdhe matsyaḥ kiṁcitkālamariṁdama ,
tataḥ punarmanuṁ dṛṣṭvā matsyo vacanamabravīt.
20. sa tatra vavṛdhe matsyaḥ kiṃcitkālam ariṃdama
tataḥ punaḥ manum dṛṣṭvā matsyaḥ vacanam abravīt
20. He, the fish, grew there for some time, O subduer of enemies (ariṃdama). Then, having seen Manu again, the fish spoke these words.
गङ्गायां हि न शक्नोमि बृहत्त्वाच्चेष्टितुं प्रभो ।
समुद्रं नय मामाशु प्रसीद भगवन्निति ॥२१॥
21. gaṅgāyāṁ hi na śaknomi bṛhattvācceṣṭituṁ prabho ,
samudraṁ naya māmāśu prasīda bhagavanniti.
21. gaṅgāyām hi na śaknomi bṛhattvāt ca ceṣṭitum
prabho samudram naya mām āśu prasīda bhagavan iti
21. Indeed, O Lord (prabhu), I am not able to move in the Ganga due to my great size. Take me quickly to the ocean! Be gracious, O glorious one (bhagavan)!
उद्धृत्य गङ्गासलिलात्ततो मत्स्यं मनुः स्वयम् ।
समुद्रमनयत्पार्थ तत्र चैनमवासृजत् ॥२२॥
22. uddhṛtya gaṅgāsalilāttato matsyaṁ manuḥ svayam ,
samudramanayatpārtha tatra cainamavāsṛjat.
22. uddhṛtya gaṅgāsalilāt tataḥ matsyam manuḥ svayam
samudram anayat pārtha tatra ca enam avāsṛjat
22. Then Manu himself, having lifted the fish out of the Ganga's water, took it to the ocean, O Pārtha (pārtha), and released it there.
सुमहानपि मत्स्यः सन्स मनोर्मनसस्तदा ।
आसीद्यथेष्टहार्यश्च स्पर्शगन्धसुखश्च वै ॥२३॥
23. sumahānapi matsyaḥ sansa manormanasastadā ,
āsīdyatheṣṭahāryaśca sparśagandhasukhaśca vai.
23. sumahān api matsyaḥ san saḥ manoḥ manasaḥ tadā āsīt
yatheṣṭa-hāryaḥ ca sparśa-gandha-sukhaḥ ca vai
23. Although that fish was truly enormous, it was then, for Manu, easy to handle as he wished, and pleasant to touch and smell.
यदा समुद्रे प्रक्षिप्तः स मत्स्यो मनुना तदा ।
तत एनमिदं वाक्यं स्मयमान इवाब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. yadā samudre prakṣiptaḥ sa matsyo manunā tadā ,
tata enamidaṁ vākyaṁ smayamāna ivābravīt.
24. yadā samudre prakṣiptaḥ saḥ matsyaḥ manunā tadā
tataḥ enam idam vākyam smayamānaḥ iva abravīt
24. When that fish was thrown into the ocean by Manu, then it addressed him with these words, as if smiling.
भगवन्कृता हि मे रक्षा त्वया सर्वा विशेषतः ।
प्राप्तकालं तु यत्कार्यं त्वया तच्छ्रूयतां मम ॥२५॥
25. bhagavankṛtā hi me rakṣā tvayā sarvā viśeṣataḥ ,
prāptakālaṁ tu yatkāryaṁ tvayā tacchrūyatāṁ mama.
25. bhagavan kṛtā hi me rakṣā tvayā sarvā viśeṣataḥ
prāptakālam tu yat kāryam tvayā tat śrūyatām mama
25. O Venerable One, you have indeed provided me with complete protection, especially. However, please hear from me now what action (kārya) is timely for you to perform.
अचिराद्भगवन्भौममिदं स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
सर्वमेव महाभाग प्रलयं वै गमिष्यति ॥२६॥
26. acirādbhagavanbhaumamidaṁ sthāvarajaṅgamam ,
sarvameva mahābhāga pralayaṁ vai gamiṣyati.
26. acirāt bhagavan bhaumam idam sthāvara-jaṅgamam
sarvam eva mahābhāga pralayam vai gamiṣyati
26. O Venerable One, O Great-souled One, soon this entire earthly creation, both stationary and moving, will indeed reach its dissolution.
संप्रक्षालनकालोऽयं लोकानां समुपस्थितः ।
तस्मात्त्वां बोधयाम्यद्य यत्ते हितमनुत्तमम् ॥२७॥
27. saṁprakṣālanakālo'yaṁ lokānāṁ samupasthitaḥ ,
tasmāttvāṁ bodhayāmyadya yatte hitamanuttamam.
27. saṃprakṣālanakālaḥ ayam lokānām samupasthitaḥ
tasmāt tvām bodhayāmi adya yat te hitam anuttamam
27. This is the time for the great cleansing of the worlds, and it has arrived. Therefore, I am informing you today of what is supremely beneficial for you.
त्रसानां स्थावराणां च यच्चेङ्गं यच्च नेङ्गति ।
तस्य सर्वस्य संप्राप्तः कालः परमदारुणः ॥२८॥
28. trasānāṁ sthāvarāṇāṁ ca yacceṅgaṁ yacca neṅgati ,
tasya sarvasya saṁprāptaḥ kālaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ.
28. trasānām sthāvarāṇām ca yat ca iṅgam yat ca na
iṅgati tasya sarvasya saṃprāptaḥ kālaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ
28. For both moving and unmoving beings, for all that which moves and all that which does not move, the exceedingly terrible time has arrived.
नौश्च कारयितव्या ते दृढा युक्तवटाकरा ।
तत्र सप्तर्षिभिः सार्धमारुहेथा महामुने ॥२९॥
29. nauśca kārayitavyā te dṛḍhā yuktavaṭākarā ,
tatra saptarṣibhiḥ sārdhamāruhethā mahāmune.
29. nauḥ ca kārayitavyā te dṛḍhā yukta-vaṭākarā
tatra saptarṣibhiḥ sārdham āruhethāḥ mahāmune
29. And a strong boat with proper fastenings must be built by you. There, O great sage, you must ascend along with the seven sages (saptarṣi).
बीजानि चैव सर्वाणि यथोक्तानि मया पुरा ।
तस्यामारोहयेर्नावि सुसंगुप्तानि भागशः ॥३०॥
30. bījāni caiva sarvāṇi yathoktāni mayā purā ,
tasyāmārohayernāvi susaṁguptāni bhāgaśaḥ.
30. bījāni ca eva sarvāṇi yathā uktāni mayā purā
tasyām ārohayeḥ nāvi susaṃguptāni bhāgaśaḥ
30. And all the seeds, as I instructed you before, you must cause to be placed in that boat, well-protected and in separate portions.
नौस्थश्च मां प्रतीक्षेथास्तदा मुनिजनप्रिय ।
आगमिष्याम्यहं शृङ्गी विज्ञेयस्तेन तापस ॥३१॥
31. nausthaśca māṁ pratīkṣethāstadā munijanapriya ,
āgamiṣyāmyahaṁ śṛṅgī vijñeyastena tāpasa.
31. nau-sthaḥ ca mām pratīkṣethāḥ tadā muni-jana-priya
āgamiṣyāmi aham śṛṅgī vijñeyaḥ tena tāpasa
31. O beloved of the sages, you should then wait for me, who will be in the boat. I will come as the horned one, O ascetic, and by that sign, you are to recognize me.
एवमेतत्त्वया कार्यमापृष्टोऽसि व्रजाम्यहम् ।
नातिशङ्क्यमिदं चापि वचनं ते ममाभिभो ॥३२॥
32. evametattvayā kāryamāpṛṣṭo'si vrajāmyaham ,
nātiśaṅkyamidaṁ cāpi vacanaṁ te mamābhibho.
32. evam etat tvayā kāryam āpṛṣṭaḥ asi vrajāmi aham na
ati-śaṅkyam idam ca api vacanam te mama abhibho
32. This is how you must act, for you have been asked; now I depart. And this statement of mine, O master, should not be doubted in the least.
एवं करिष्य इति तं स मत्स्यं प्रत्यभाषत ।
जग्मतुश्च यथाकाममनुज्ञाप्य परस्परम् ॥३३॥
33. evaṁ kariṣya iti taṁ sa matsyaṁ pratyabhāṣata ,
jagmatuśca yathākāmamanujñāpya parasparam.
33. evam kariṣye iti tam saḥ matsyam prati-abhāṣata
jagmatuḥ ca yathā-kāmam anu-jñāpya parasparam
33. Manu replied to the fish, saying, 'I will do exactly as you say.' Then, having bid farewell to each other, they both departed as they pleased.
ततो मनुर्महाराज यथोक्तं मत्स्यकेन ह ।
बीजान्यादाय सर्वाणि सागरं पुप्लुवे तदा ।
नावा तु शुभया वीर महोर्मिणमरिंदम ॥३४॥
34. tato manurmahārāja yathoktaṁ matsyakena ha ,
bījānyādāya sarvāṇi sāgaraṁ pupluve tadā ,
nāvā tu śubhayā vīra mahormiṇamariṁdama.
34. tataḥ manuḥ mahā-rāja yathā-uktam
matsyakena ha bījāni ādāya sarvāṇi
sāgaram pupluve tadā nāvā tu
śubhayā vīra mahā-ūrmiṇam ariṃ-dama
34. Then, O great king, as instructed by the fish, Manu, having indeed collected all the seeds, then sailed into the greatly-waving ocean on a beautiful boat, O hero, O vanquisher of enemies.
चिन्तयामास च मनुस्तं मत्स्यं पृथिवीपते ।
स च तच्चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा मत्स्यः परपुरंजय ।
शृङ्गी तत्राजगामाशु तदा भरतसत्तम ॥३५॥
35. cintayāmāsa ca manustaṁ matsyaṁ pṛthivīpate ,
sa ca taccintitaṁ jñātvā matsyaḥ parapuraṁjaya ,
śṛṅgī tatrājagāmāśu tadā bharatasattama.
35. cintayāmāsa ca manuḥ tam matsyam
pṛthivīpate | saḥ ca tat cintitam jñātvā
matsyaḥ parapuranjay | śṛṅgī
tatra ājagāma āśu tadā bharatasattama
35. O lord of the earth (pṛthivīpati)! Manu reflected upon that fish. And O best of the Bhāratas (bharatasattama), that fish, understanding Manu's thought, quickly came there, horned (śṛṅgī).
तं दृष्ट्वा मनुजेन्द्रेन्द्र मनुर्मत्स्यं जलार्णवे ।
शृङ्गिणं तं यथोक्तेन रूपेणाद्रिमिवोच्छ्रितम् ॥३६॥
36. taṁ dṛṣṭvā manujendrendra manurmatsyaṁ jalārṇave ,
śṛṅgiṇaṁ taṁ yathoktena rūpeṇādrimivocchritam.
36. tam dṛṣṭvā manujendrendra manuḥ matsyam jalārṇave |
śṛṅgiṇam tam yathoktena rūpeṇa adrim iva ucchritam
36. O foremost among kings (manujendrendra)! Manu saw that horned fish in the ocean, rising like a mountain with the very form he had described.
वटाकरमयं पाशमथ मत्स्यस्य मूर्धनि ।
मनुर्मनुजशार्दूल तस्मिञ्शृङ्गे न्यवेशयत् ॥३७॥
37. vaṭākaramayaṁ pāśamatha matsyasya mūrdhani ,
manurmanujaśārdūla tasmiñśṛṅge nyaveśayat.
37. vaṭākaramayam pāśam atha matsyasya mūrdhani
| manuḥ manujaśārdūla tasmin śṛṅge nyaveśayat
37. O tiger among men (manujaśārdūla)! Manu then placed a rope made of tree bark (vaṭākaramaya) on the head of that fish, on its horn.
संयतस्तेन पाशेन मत्स्यः परपुरंजय ।
वेगेन महता नावं प्राकर्षल्लवणाम्भसि ॥३८॥
38. saṁyatastena pāśena matsyaḥ parapuraṁjaya ,
vegena mahatā nāvaṁ prākarṣallavaṇāmbhasi.
38. saṃyataḥ tena pāśena matsyaḥ parapuranjay |
vegena mahatā nāvam prākarṣat lavaṇāmbhasi
38. O conqueror of enemy cities (parapuranjay)! The fish, bound by that rope, swiftly pulled the boat with great force through the salty waters.
स ततार तया नावा समुद्रं मनुजेश्वर ।
नृत्यमानमिवोर्मीभिर्गर्जमानमिवाम्भसा ॥३९॥
39. sa tatāra tayā nāvā samudraṁ manujeśvara ,
nṛtyamānamivormībhirgarjamānamivāmbhasā.
39. sa tatāra tayā nāvā samudram manujeśvara
nṛtyamānam iva ūrmībhiḥ garjamānam iva ambhasā
39. O lord of men, he crossed that ocean, which seemed to be dancing with its waves and roaring with its waters.
क्षोभ्यमाणा महावातैः सा नौस्तस्मिन्महोदधौ ।
घूर्णते चपलेव स्त्री मत्ता परपुरंजय ॥४०॥
40. kṣobhyamāṇā mahāvātaiḥ sā naustasminmahodadhau ,
ghūrṇate capaleva strī mattā parapuraṁjaya.
40. kṣobhyamāṇā mahāvātaiḥ sā nauḥ tasmin mahodadhau
ghūrṇate capalā iva strī mattā parapurajaya
40. O conqueror of enemy cities, that boat, agitated by strong winds in that great ocean, reeled like a fickle, intoxicated woman.
नैव भूमिर्न च दिशः प्रदिशो वा चकाशिरे ।
सर्वमाम्भसमेवासीत्खं द्यौश्च नरपुंगव ॥४१॥
41. naiva bhūmirna ca diśaḥ pradiśo vā cakāśire ,
sarvamāmbhasamevāsītkhaṁ dyauśca narapuṁgava.
41. na eva bhūmiḥ na ca diśaḥ pradiśaḥ vā cakāśire
sarvam āmbhasam eva āsīt kham dyauḥ ca narapuṅgava
41. O best among men, neither the earth, nor the cardinal directions, nor the intermediate directions were visible. Everything, the sky and the heavens included, was entirely watery.
एवंभूते तदा लोके संकुले भरतर्षभ ।
अदृश्यन्त सप्तर्षयो मनुर्मत्स्यः सहैव ह ॥४२॥
42. evaṁbhūte tadā loke saṁkule bharatarṣabha ,
adṛśyanta saptarṣayo manurmatsyaḥ sahaiva ha.
42. evambhūte tadā loke saṃkule bharatarṣabha
adṛśyanta saptarṣayaḥ manuḥ matsyaḥ saha eva ha
42. O best of the Bharatas, in that chaotic state of the world then, the seven sages (saptarṣi), Manu, and the fish were indeed seen together.
एवं बहून्वर्षगणांस्तां नावं सोऽथ मत्स्यकः ।
चकर्षातन्द्रितो राजंस्तस्मिन्सलिलसंचये ॥४३॥
43. evaṁ bahūnvarṣagaṇāṁstāṁ nāvaṁ so'tha matsyakaḥ ,
cakarṣātandrito rājaṁstasminsalilasaṁcaye.
43. evam bahūn varṣagaṇān tām nāvam saḥ atha matsyakaḥ
| cakarṣa atandritaḥ rājan tasmin salilasaṃcaye
43. Thus, O King, that tireless little fish pulled that boat through the vast accumulation of water for many years.
ततो हिमवतः शृङ्गं यत्परं पुरुषर्षभ ।
तत्राकर्षत्ततो नावं स मत्स्यः कुरुनन्दन ॥४४॥
44. tato himavataḥ śṛṅgaṁ yatparaṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
tatrākarṣattato nāvaṁ sa matsyaḥ kurunandana.
44. tataḥ himavataḥ śṛṅgam yat param puruṣarṣabha |
tatra akarṣat tataḥ nāvam saḥ matsyaḥ kurunandana
44. Then, O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), that fish, O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), pulled the boat to that supreme peak of the Himalayas.
ततोऽब्रवीत्तदा मत्स्यस्तानृषीन्प्रहसञ्शनैः ।
अस्मिन्हिमवतः शृङ्गे नावं बध्नीत माचिरम् ॥४५॥
45. tato'bravīttadā matsyastānṛṣīnprahasañśanaiḥ ,
asminhimavataḥ śṛṅge nāvaṁ badhnīta māciram.
45. tataḥ abravīt tadā matsyaḥ tān ṛṣīn prahasan śanaiḥ
| asmin himavataḥ śṛṅge nāvam badhnīta mā ciram
45. Then, the fish, smiling gently, said to those seers (ṛṣi): 'Tie the boat to this peak of the Himalayas immediately! Do not delay!'
सा बद्धा तत्र तैस्तूर्णमृषिभिर्भरतर्षभ ।
नौर्मत्स्यस्य वचः श्रुत्वा शृङ्गे हिमवतस्तदा ॥४६॥
46. sā baddhā tatra taistūrṇamṛṣibhirbharatarṣabha ,
naurmatsyasya vacaḥ śrutvā śṛṅge himavatastadā.
46. sā baddhā tatra taiḥ tūrṇam ṛṣibhiḥ bharatarṣabha
| nauḥ matsyasya vacaḥ śrutvā śṛṅge himavataḥ tadā
46. Then, O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), that boat was quickly tied there by those seers (ṛṣi) to the peak of the Himalayas, having heard the words of the fish.
तच्च नौबन्धनं नाम शृङ्गं हिमवतः परम् ।
ख्यातमद्यापि कौन्तेय तद्विद्धि भरतर्षभ ॥४७॥
47. tacca naubandhanaṁ nāma śṛṅgaṁ himavataḥ param ,
khyātamadyāpi kaunteya tadviddhi bharatarṣabha.
47. tat ca nāubandhanam nāma śṛṅgam himavataḥ param
khyātam adya api kaunteya tat viddhi bharatarṣabha
47. And that eminent peak of the Himalayas, named 'Nāubandhanam' (Boat-Tying), is renowned even today. Know that, O son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), O best among the Bharatas (Bharatarṣabha).
अथाब्रवीदनिमिषस्तानृषीन्सहितांस्तदा ।
अहं प्रजापतिर्ब्रह्मा मत्परं नाधिगम्यते ।
मत्स्यरूपेण यूयं च मयास्मान्मोक्षिता भयात् ॥४८॥
48. athābravīdanimiṣastānṛṣīnsahitāṁstadā ,
ahaṁ prajāpatirbrahmā matparaṁ nādhigamyate ,
matsyarūpeṇa yūyaṁ ca mayāsmānmokṣitā bhayāt.
48. atha abravīt animiṣaḥ tān ṛṣīn sahitān
tadā aham prajāpatiḥ brahmā mat
param na adhigamyate matsyarūpeṇa
yūyam ca mayā asmāt mokṣitāḥ bhayāt
48. Then the unblinking one (Viṣṇu), as Prajāpati Brahmā, spoke to those assembled sages: 'I am Prajāpati (the lord of creatures), Brahmā. Nothing superior to Me is to be found. And you all were delivered by Me from this fear while I was in the form of a fish.'
मनुना च प्रजाः सर्वाः सदेवासुरमानवाः ।
स्रष्टव्याः सर्वलोकाश्च यच्चेङ्गं यच्च नेङ्गति ॥४९॥
49. manunā ca prajāḥ sarvāḥ sadevāsuramānavāḥ ,
sraṣṭavyāḥ sarvalokāśca yacceṅgaṁ yacca neṅgati.
49. manunā ca prajāḥ sarvāḥ sadevasuramānavāḥ sraṣṭavyāḥ
sarvalokāḥ ca yat ca iṅgam yat ca na iṅgati
49. And by Manu, all beings - including gods, asuras, and humans - are to be created, as are all the worlds, and everything that moves and everything that does not move.
तपसा चातितीव्रेण प्रतिभास्य भविष्यति ।
मत्प्रसादात्प्रजासर्गे न च मोहं गमिष्यति ॥५०॥
50. tapasā cātitīvreṇa pratibhāsya bhaviṣyati ,
matprasādātprajāsarge na ca mohaṁ gamiṣyati.
50. tapasā ca atitīvreṇa pratibhāsya bhaviṣyati
matprasādāt prajāsarge na ca moham gamiṣyati
50. And through very intense austerity (tapas), [divine] intuitive insight (pratibhāsya) will arise in you. By My grace, you will not experience delusion (moha) during the creation of progeny (prajāsarga).
इत्युक्त्वा वचनं मत्स्यः क्षणेनादर्शनं गतः ।
स्रष्टुकामः प्रजाश्चापि मनुर्वैवस्वतः स्वयम् ।
प्रमूढोऽभूत्प्रजासर्गे तपस्तेपे महत्ततः ॥५१॥
51. ityuktvā vacanaṁ matsyaḥ kṣaṇenādarśanaṁ gataḥ ,
sraṣṭukāmaḥ prajāścāpi manurvaivasvataḥ svayam ,
pramūḍho'bhūtprajāsarge tapastepe mahattataḥ.
51. iti uktvā vacanam matsyaḥ kṣaṇena
adarśanam gataḥ sraṣṭukāmaḥ prajāḥ ca api
manuḥ vaivasvataḥ svayam pramūḍhaḥ
abhūt prajāsarge tapaḥ tepe mahat tataḥ
51. Having spoken thus, the fish (matsya) instantly vanished. Then, Manu Vaivasvata himself, desiring to create beings, became bewildered regarding the creation of beings. Therefore, he performed great austerities (tapas).
तपसा महता युक्तः सोऽथ स्रष्टुं प्रचक्रमे ।
सर्वाः प्रजा मनुः साक्षाद्यथावद्भरतर्षभ ॥५२॥
52. tapasā mahatā yuktaḥ so'tha sraṣṭuṁ pracakrame ,
sarvāḥ prajā manuḥ sākṣādyathāvadbharatarṣabha.
52. tapasā mahatā yuktaḥ saḥ atha sraṣṭum pracakrame
sarvāḥ prajāḥ manuḥ sākṣāt yathāvat bharatarṣabha
52. Equipped with great austerities (tapas), he then began to create. O best of Bharatas, Manu himself directly created all beings (prajā) as they should be.
इत्येतन्मात्स्यकं नाम पुराणं परिकीर्तितम् ।
आख्यानमिदमाख्यातं सर्वपापहरं मया ॥५३॥
53. ityetanmātsyakaṁ nāma purāṇaṁ parikīrtitam ,
ākhyānamidamākhyātaṁ sarvapāpaharaṁ mayā.
53. iti etat mātsyakam nāma purāṇam parikīrtitam
ākhyānam idam ākhyātam sarvapāpaharam mayā
53. Thus, this Purāṇa, named Mātsyaka, has been recounted. This narration, which removes all sins, has been told by me.
य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं मनोश्चरितमादितः ।
स सुखी सर्वसिद्धार्थः स्वर्गलोकमियान्नरः ॥५४॥
54. ya idaṁ śṛṇuyānnityaṁ manoścaritamāditaḥ ,
sa sukhī sarvasiddhārthaḥ svargalokamiyānnaraḥ.
54. yaḥ idam śṛṇuyāt nityam manoḥ caritam āditaḥ saḥ
sukhī sarvasiddhārthaḥ svargalokam iyāt naraḥ
54. That man who regularly hears this tale of Manu from the beginning will be happy and achieve all his objectives. He will go to the heavenly realm (svargaloka).
