वैशंपायन उवाच ।
धृतराष्ट्रवचः श्रुत्वा भीष्मद्रोणौ समर्थ्य तौ ।
दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमूचतुः शासनातिगम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dhṛtarāṣṭravacaḥ śrutvā bhīṣmadroṇau samarthya tau ,
duryodhanamidaṁ vākyamūcatuḥ śāsanātigam.

samarthya tau duryodhanam idam vākyam ūcatuḥ śāsanātigam
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard Dhṛtarāṣṭra's words, Bhīṣma and Droṇa, after considering them, spoke these words to Duryodhana, who was disregarding their advice.
यावत्कृष्णावसंनद्धौ यावत्तिष्ठति गाण्डिवम् ।
यावद्धौम्यो न सेनाग्नौ जुहोतीह द्विषद्बलम् ॥२॥
2. yāvatkṛṣṇāvasaṁnaddhau yāvattiṣṭhati gāṇḍivam ,
yāvaddhaumyo na senāgnau juhotīha dviṣadbalam.
2. yāvat kṛṣṇau asannaddhau yāvat tiṣṭhati gāṇḍīvam
yāvat dhaumyaḥ na senāgnau juhoti iha dviṣadbalam
2. As long as Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna are not fully arrayed for battle, as long as Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow) remains unstrung, and as long as Dhaumya does not offer the enemy host here into the sacrificial fire of the army (yajña)...
यावन्न प्रेक्षते क्रुद्धः सेनां तव युधिष्ठिरः ।
ह्रीनिषेधो महेष्वासस्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥३॥
3. yāvanna prekṣate kruddhaḥ senāṁ tava yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
hrīniṣedho maheṣvāsastāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam.
3. yāvat na prekṣate kruddhaḥ senām tava yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
hrīniṣedhaḥ mahāiṣvāsaḥ tāvat śāmyatu vaiśasam
3. As long as the enraged Yudhiṣṭhira, whose sense of honor (hrī) prevents him, that great archer, does not gaze upon your army, let this slaughter cease.
यावन्न दृश्यते पार्थः स्वेष्वनीकेष्ववस्थितः ।
भीमसेनो महेष्वासस्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥४॥
4. yāvanna dṛśyate pārthaḥ sveṣvanīkeṣvavasthitaḥ ,
bhīmaseno maheṣvāsastāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam.
4. yāvat na dṛśyate pārthaḥ sveṣu anīkeṣu avasthitaḥ
bhīmasenaḥ mahāiṣvāsaḥ tāvat śāmyatu vaiśasam
4. As long as Pārtha (Arjuna) is not seen stationed in his own divisions of the army, and as long as Bhīmasena, that great archer, is not seen (in action), let this slaughter cease.
यावन्न चरते मार्गान्पृतनामभिहर्षयन् ।
यावन्न शातयत्याजौ शिरांसि गजयोधिनाम् ॥५॥
5. yāvanna carate mārgānpṛtanāmabhiharṣayan ,
yāvanna śātayatyājau śirāṁsi gajayodhinām.
5. yāvat na carate mārgān pṛtanām abhiharṣayan
yāvat na śātayati ājau śirāṃsi gajayodhinām
5. Let this slaughter cease until (the implied warrior) marches along the paths, delighting the armies, and until he severs the heads of elephant-warriors in battle.
गदया वीरघातिन्या फलानीव वनस्पतेः ।
कालेन परिपक्वानि तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥६॥
6. gadayā vīraghātinyā phalānīva vanaspateḥ ,
kālena paripakvāni tāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam.
6. gadayā vīraghātinyā phalāni iva vanaspateḥ
kālena paripakvāni tāvat śāmyatu vaiśasam
6. Let this slaughter (vaiśasa) cease until (the implied warrior) marches along the paths, delighting the armies, and until he severs the heads of elephant-warriors in battle with his hero-slaying mace, just as fruits ripened by time fall from a tree.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ।
विराटश्च शिखण्डी च शैशुपालिश्च दंशिताः ॥७॥
7. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ ,
virāṭaśca śikhaṇḍī ca śaiśupāliśca daṁśitāḥ.
7. nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca pārṣataḥ
virāṭ ca śikhaṇḍī ca śaiśupāliḥ ca daṃśitāḥ
7. Nakula, Sahadeva, Dhṛṣṭadyumna the Pāñcāla, Virāṭa, Śikhaṇḍin, and Śaiśupāli - all armoured.
यावन्न प्रविशन्त्येते नक्रा इव महार्णवम् ।
कृतास्त्राः क्षिप्रमस्यन्तस्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥८॥
8. yāvanna praviśantyete nakrā iva mahārṇavam ,
kṛtāstrāḥ kṣipramasyantastāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam.
8. yāvat na praviśanti ete nakrāḥ iva mahārṇavam
kṛtāstrāḥ kṣipram asyantaḥ tāvat śāmyatu vaiśasam
8. Let this slaughter (vaiśasa) cease until these (warriors), skilled in weapons and swiftly shooting, enter (the battle) like crocodiles plunging into a great ocean.
यावन्न सुकुमारेषु शरीरेषु महीक्षिताम् ।
गार्ध्रपत्राः पतन्त्युग्रास्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥९॥
9. yāvanna sukumāreṣu śarīreṣu mahīkṣitām ,
gārdhrapatrāḥ patantyugrāstāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam.
9. yāvat na sukumāreṣu śarīreṣu mahīkṣitām
gārdhrapatrāḥ patanti ugrāḥ tāvat śāmyatu vaiśasam
9. Let this slaughter subside before fierce, vulture-feathered (arrows) fall upon the delicate bodies of kings.
चन्दनागरुदिग्धेषु हारनिष्कधरेषु च ।
नोरःसु यावद्योधानां महेष्वासैर्महेषवः ॥१०॥
10. candanāgarudigdheṣu hāraniṣkadhareṣu ca ,
noraḥsu yāvadyodhānāṁ maheṣvāsairmaheṣavaḥ.
10. candanāgarudigdheṣu hāraniṣkadhareṣu ca na
uraḥsu yāvat yodhānām maheṣvāsaiḥ maheṣavaḥ
10. Let this slaughter (vaiśasam) subside before great arrows, shot by great archers, fall upon the chests of warriors - chests that are smeared with sandalwood and agaru paste and adorned with necklaces and gold coins.
कृतास्त्रैः क्षिप्रमस्यद्भिर्दूरपातिभिरायसाः ।
अभिलक्ष्यैर्निपात्यन्ते तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥११॥
11. kṛtāstraiḥ kṣipramasyadbhirdūrapātibhirāyasāḥ ,
abhilakṣyairnipātyante tāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam.
11. kṛtāstraiḥ kṣipram asyadbhiḥ dūrapātibhiḥ āyasāḥ
abhilakṣyaiḥ nipātyante tāvat śāmyatu vaiśasam
11. Before iron arrows, swiftly hurled by skilled, far-shooting archers and accurately aimed, are made to fall, let this slaughter (vaiśasam) subside.
अभिवादयमानं त्वां शिरसा राजकुञ्जरः ।
पाणिभ्यां प्रतिगृह्णातु धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१२॥
12. abhivādayamānaṁ tvāṁ śirasā rājakuñjaraḥ ,
pāṇibhyāṁ pratigṛhṇātu dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
12. abhivādayamānam tvām śirasā rājakuñjaraḥ
pāṇibhyām pratigṛhṇātu dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
12. Let Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharma), that foremost among kings, receive you - who are bowing your head - with his two hands.
ध्वजाङ्कुशपताकाङ्कं दक्षिणं ते सुदक्षिणः ।
स्कन्धे निक्षिपतां बाहुं शान्तये भरतर्षभ ॥१३॥
13. dhvajāṅkuśapatākāṅkaṁ dakṣiṇaṁ te sudakṣiṇaḥ ,
skandhe nikṣipatāṁ bāhuṁ śāntaye bharatarṣabha.
13. dhvajāṅkuśapatākāṅkam dakṣiṇam te sudakṣiṇaḥ
skandhe nikṣipatām bāhum śāntaye bharatarṣabha
13. O best of Bharatas, let the very skillful one [Bhīma] place his right arm, which is marked with a flag, a goad, and a banner, upon your shoulder for your tranquility (śānti).
रत्नौषधिसमेतेन रत्नाङ्गुलितलेन च ।
उपविष्टस्य पृष्ठं ते पाणिना परिमार्जतु ॥१४॥
14. ratnauṣadhisametena ratnāṅgulitalena ca ,
upaviṣṭasya pṛṣṭhaṁ te pāṇinā parimārjatu.
14. ratnauṣadhisametena ratnāṅgulitalena ca
upaviṣṭasya pṛṣṭham te pāṇinā parimārjatu
14. And let him stroke your back as you sit, with his hand (pāṇi), which is endowed with jewels and medicinal herbs, and with its palm adorned with jeweled fingers.
शालस्कन्धो महाबाहुस्त्वां स्वजानो वृकोदरः ।
साम्नाभिवदतां चापि शान्तये भरतर्षभ ॥१५॥
15. śālaskandho mahābāhustvāṁ svajāno vṛkodaraḥ ,
sāmnābhivadatāṁ cāpi śāntaye bharatarṣabha.
15. śālaskandhaḥ mahābāhuḥ tvām svajānaḥ vṛkodaraḥ
sāmnā abhivadatām ca api śāntaye bharatarṣabha
15. O best of Bharatas, let Vṛkodara, who has shoulders like śāla tree trunks, mighty arms, and is your kinsman, greet you with gentle words for your tranquility (śānti).
अर्जुनेन यमाभ्यां च त्रिभिस्तैरभिवादितः ।
मूर्ध्नि तान्समुपाघ्राय प्रेम्णाभिवद पार्थिव ॥१६॥
16. arjunena yamābhyāṁ ca tribhistairabhivāditaḥ ,
mūrdhni tānsamupāghrāya premṇābhivada pārthiva.
16. arjunena yamābhyām ca tribhiḥ taiḥ abhivāditaḥ
mūrdhni tān samupāghrāya premnā abhivada pārthiva
16. Having been greeted by Arjuna and by the two Yamas (Nākula and Sahadeva) - by these three - O king (pārthiva), you should affectionately embrace (lit. smell) them on their heads and return their greetings.
दृष्ट्वा त्वां पाण्डवैर्वीरैर्भ्रातृभिः सह संगतम् ।
यावदानन्दजाश्रूणि प्रमुञ्चन्तु नराधिपाः ॥१७॥
17. dṛṣṭvā tvāṁ pāṇḍavairvīrairbhrātṛbhiḥ saha saṁgatam ,
yāvadānandajāśrūṇi pramuñcantu narādhipāḥ.
17. dṛṣṭvā tvām pāṇḍavaiḥ vīraiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
saṅgatam yāvat ānandajāśrūṇi pramuñcantu narādhipāḥ
17. Let the kings shed tears born of joy (ānandajāśrūṇi), having seen you united with your brave Pāṇḍava brothers.
घुष्यतां राजधानीषु सर्वसंपन्महीक्षिताम् ।
पृथिवी भ्रातृभावेन भुज्यतां विज्वरो भव ॥१८॥
18. ghuṣyatāṁ rājadhānīṣu sarvasaṁpanmahīkṣitām ,
pṛthivī bhrātṛbhāvena bhujyatāṁ vijvaro bhava.
18. ghuṣyatām rājadhānīṣu sarvasampat mahīkṣitām
pṛthivī bhrātṛbhāvena bhujyatām vijvaraḥ bhava
18. Let the prosperity (sarvasampat) of all kings (mahīkṣitām) be proclaimed in the capitals. Let the earth be governed with brotherly affection, and may you be free from anxiety.
