वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सुदीर्घमुष्णं निःश्वस्य धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ।
अब्रवीत्संजयं सूतमामन्त्र्य भरतर्षभ ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sudīrghamuṣṇaṁ niḥśvasya dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ ,
abravītsaṁjayaṁ sūtamāmantrya bharatarṣabha.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Ambikā, after sighing a very long and hot sigh, addressed Saṃjaya, the charioteer. (O best among the Bharatas!)
देवपुत्रौ महाभागौ देवराजसमद्युती ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च पाण्डवौ युद्धदुर्मदौ ॥२॥
2. devaputrau mahābhāgau devarājasamadyutī ,
nakulaḥ sahadevaśca pāṇḍavau yuddhadurmadau.

2. The two sons of Pāṇḍu, Nakula and Sahadeva, were indeed sons of gods, highly fortunate, possessing a splendor equal to the king of gods (Indra), and irresistible in battle.
दृढायुधौ दूरपातौ युद्धे च कृतनिश्चयौ ।
शीघ्रहस्तौ दृढक्रोधौ नित्ययुक्तौ तरस्विनौ ॥३॥
3. dṛḍhāyudhau dūrapātau yuddhe ca kṛtaniścayau ,
śīghrahastau dṛḍhakrodhau nityayuktau tarasvinau.

3. They possess strong weapons, strike from afar, and are resolute in battle. They are swift-handed, unwavering in their wrath, ever-vigilant, and powerful.
भीमार्जुनौ पुरोधाय यदा तौ रणमूर्धनि ।
स्थास्येते सिंहविक्रान्तावश्विनाविव दुःसहौ ।
न शेषमिह पश्यामि तदा सैन्यस्य संजय ॥४॥
4. bhīmārjunau purodhāya yadā tau raṇamūrdhani ,
sthāsyete siṁhavikrāntāvaśvināviva duḥsahau ,
na śeṣamiha paśyāmi tadā sainyasya saṁjaya.

aśvinau iva duḥsahau na śeṣam
iha paśyāmi tadā sainyasya saṃjaya
4. O Sanjaya, when those two, Bhima and Arjuna, stand at the forefront of battle, having been placed there as leaders, irresistible and displaying the valor of lions, just like the two Ashvins, then I see no army remaining here.
तौ ह्यप्रतिरथौ युद्धे देवपुत्रौ महारथौ ।
द्रौपद्यास्तं परिक्लेशं न क्षंस्येते त्वमर्षिणौ ॥५॥
5. tau hyapratirathau yuddhe devaputrau mahārathau ,
draupadyāstaṁ parikleśaṁ na kṣaṁsyete tvamarṣiṇau.
5. tau hi apratirathau yuddhe devaputrau mahārathau
draupadyāḥ tam parikleśam na kṣaṃsyete tu amarṣiṇau
5. Indeed, those two great charioteers, sons of gods and peerless in battle, will not tolerate that great suffering of Draupadi, for they are intolerant.
वृष्णयो वा महेष्वासा पाञ्चाला वा महौजसः ।
युधि सत्याभिसंधेन वासुदेवेन रक्षिताः ।
प्रधक्ष्यन्ति रणे पार्थाः पुत्राणां मम वाहिनीम् ॥६॥
6. vṛṣṇayo vā maheṣvāsā pāñcālā vā mahaujasaḥ ,
yudhi satyābhisaṁdhena vāsudevena rakṣitāḥ ,
pradhakṣyanti raṇe pārthāḥ putrāṇāṁ mama vāhinīm.
6. vṛṣṇayaḥ vā maheṣvāsāḥ pāñcālāḥ vā
mahaujasaḥ yudhi satyābhisandhena
vāsudevena rakṣitāḥ pradhakṣyanti
raṇe pārthāḥ putrāṇām mama vāhinīm
6. Whether the Vrishnis, mighty archers, or the Panchalas, of great power, the Pandavas, protected in battle by Vasudeva (Krishna) whose resolve is true, will utterly consume the army of my sons in battle.
रामकृष्णप्रणीतानां वृष्णीनां सूतनन्दन ।
न शक्यः सहितुं वेगः पर्वतैरपि संयुगे ॥७॥
7. rāmakṛṣṇapraṇītānāṁ vṛṣṇīnāṁ sūtanandana ,
na śakyaḥ sahituṁ vegaḥ parvatairapi saṁyuge.
7. rāmākṛṣṇapraṇītānām vṛṣṇīnām sūtanandana na
śakyaḥ sahituṃ vegaḥ parvataiḥ api saṃyuge
7. O son of a charioteer, the force of the Vrishnis, who are led by Rama and Krishna, cannot be endured even by mountains in battle.
तेषां मध्ये महेष्वासो भीमो भीमपराक्रमः ।
शैक्यया वीरघातिन्या गदया विचरिष्यति ॥८॥
8. teṣāṁ madhye maheṣvāso bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ ,
śaikyayā vīraghātinyā gadayā vicariṣyati.
8. teṣām madhye maheṣvāsaḥ bhīmaḥ bhīmaparākramaḥ
śaicyayā vīraghātinyā gadayā vicariṣyati
8. Among them, Bhima, the great archer and man of terrible prowess, will move about wielding the mace of Krishna (śaicyā), which is known as the slayer of heroes.
तथा गाण्डीवनिर्घोषं विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः ।
गदावेगं च भीमस्य नालं सोढुं नराधिपाः ॥९॥
9. tathā gāṇḍīvanirghoṣaṁ visphūrjitamivāśaneḥ ,
gadāvegaṁ ca bhīmasya nālaṁ soḍhuṁ narādhipāḥ.
9. tathā gāṇḍīvanirghoṣam visphūrjitam iva aśaneḥ
gadāvegam ca bhīmasya na alam soḍhuṃ narādhipāḥ
9. And similarly, O kings, you will not be capable of withstanding the roar of the Gaṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow) - which is like a flash of lightning - nor the force of Bhima's mace.
ततोऽहं सुहृदां वाचो दुर्योधनवशानुगः ।
स्मरणीयाः स्मरिष्यामि मया या न कृताः पुरा ॥१०॥
10. tato'haṁ suhṛdāṁ vāco duryodhanavaśānugaḥ ,
smaraṇīyāḥ smariṣyāmi mayā yā na kṛtāḥ purā.
10. tataḥ aham suhṛdām vācaḥ duryodhanavaśānugaḥ
smaraṇīyāḥ smariṣyāmi mayā yā na kṛtāḥ purā
10. Then I, being one who follows Duryodhana's will, will recall the memorable advice of my friends, which I did not implement previously.
संजय उवाच ।
व्यतिक्रमोऽयं सुमहांस्त्वया राजन्नुपेक्षितः ।
समर्थेनापि यन्मोहात्पुत्रस्ते न निवारितः ॥११॥
11. saṁjaya uvāca ,
vyatikramo'yaṁ sumahāṁstvayā rājannupekṣitaḥ ,
samarthenāpi yanmohātputraste na nivāritaḥ.
11. sañjaya uvāca vyatikramaḥ ayam sumahān tvayā rājan
upekṣitaḥ samarthena api yat mohāt putraḥ te na nivāritaḥ
11. Sañjaya said: "O King, you overlooked this very great transgression. Even though you were capable, you did not prevent your son, who was acting out of delusion."
श्रुत्वा हि निर्जितान्द्यूते पाण्डवान्मधुसूदनः ।
त्वरितः काम्यके पार्थान्समभावयदच्युतः ॥१२॥
12. śrutvā hi nirjitāndyūte pāṇḍavānmadhusūdanaḥ ,
tvaritaḥ kāmyake pārthānsamabhāvayadacyutaḥ.
12. śrutvā hi nirjitān dyūte pāṇḍavān madhusūdanaḥ
tvaritaḥ kāmyake pārthān samabhāvayat acyutaḥ
12. Indeed, upon hearing that the Pāṇḍavas had been defeated in gambling, Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa), the infallible one (acyuta), quickly went to Kāmyaka forest and met with the Pārthas.
द्रुपदस्य तथा पुत्रा धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाः ।
विराटो धृष्टकेतुश्च केकयाश्च महारथाः ॥१३॥
13. drupadasya tathā putrā dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamāḥ ,
virāṭo dhṛṣṭaketuśca kekayāśca mahārathāḥ.
13. drupadasya tathā putrāḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnapurōgamāḥ
virāṭaḥ dhṛṣṭaketuḥ ca kekayāḥ ca mahārathāḥ
13. And the sons of Drupada, led by Dhṛṣṭadyumna, as well as Virāṭa, Dhṛṣṭaketu, and the Kekayas, who were great chariot warriors (mahārathas).
तैश्च यत्कथितं तत्र दृष्ट्वा पार्थान्पराजितान् ।
चारेण विदितं सर्वं तन्मया वेदितं च ते ॥१४॥
14. taiśca yatkathitaṁ tatra dṛṣṭvā pārthānparājitān ,
cāreṇa viditaṁ sarvaṁ tanmayā veditaṁ ca te.
14. taiḥ ca yat kathitam tatra dṛṣṭvā pārthān parājitān
cāreṇa viditam sarvam tat mayā veditam ca te
14. And whatever was said there by them, after they had seen the Pārthas defeated, all of that was learned through my spy, and I have now made it known to you.
समागम्य वृतस्तत्र पाण्डवैर्मधुसूदनः ।
सारथ्ये फल्गुनस्याजौ तथेत्याह च तान्हरिः ॥१५॥
15. samāgamya vṛtastatra pāṇḍavairmadhusūdanaḥ ,
sārathye phalgunasyājau tathetyāha ca tānhariḥ.
15. samāgamya vṛtaḥ tatra pāṇḍavaiḥ madhusūdanaḥ
sāratthye phalgunasya ājau tathā iti āha ca tān hariḥ
15. When the Pāṇḍavas met Kṛṣṇa (Madhusūdana) there and requested him to be Arjuna's charioteer in battle, Hari (Kṛṣṇa) said to them, "So be it."
अमर्षितो हि कृष्णोऽपि दृष्ट्वा पार्थांस्तथागतान् ।
कृष्णाजिनोत्तरासङ्गानब्रवीच्च युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१६॥
16. amarṣito hi kṛṣṇo'pi dṛṣṭvā pārthāṁstathāgatān ,
kṛṣṇājinottarāsaṅgānabravīcca yudhiṣṭhiram.
16. amarṣitaḥ hi kṛṣṇaḥ api dṛṣṭvā pārthān tathāgatān
kṛṣṇājinottarāsaṅgān abravīt ca yudhiṣṭhiram
16. Indeed, Kṛṣṇa himself became indignant upon seeing the Pārthas, who had arrived in such a condition, wearing black deerskins as their upper garments. And he spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira.
या सा समृद्धिः पार्थानामिन्द्रप्रस्थे बभूव ह ।
राजसूये मया दृष्टा नृपैरन्यैः सुदुर्लभा ॥१७॥
17. yā sā samṛddhiḥ pārthānāmindraprasthe babhūva ha ,
rājasūye mayā dṛṣṭā nṛpairanyaiḥ sudurlabhā.
17. yā sā samṛddhiḥ pārthānām indraprasthe babhūva
ha rājasūye mayā dṛṣṭā nṛpaiḥ anyaiḥ sudurlabhā
17. That prosperity and splendor of the Pārthas, which existed in Indraprastha and which I witnessed during the Rājasūya (yajña) ritual, was indeed extremely difficult for any other kings to achieve.
यत्र सर्वान्महीपालाञ्शस्त्रतेजोभयार्दितान् ।
सवङ्गाङ्गान्सपौण्ड्रोड्रान्सचोलद्रविडान्धकान् ॥१८॥
18. yatra sarvānmahīpālāñśastratejobhayārditān ,
savaṅgāṅgānsapauṇḍroḍrānsacoladraviḍāndhakān.
18. yatra sarvān mahīpālān śastratejobhayārditān
savaṅgāṅgān sapauṇḍroḍrān sacoladraviḍāndhakān
18. ...where all kings, distressed by the fear of their (the Pāṇḍavas') weapons and might - including those from Vaṅga, Aṅga, Pauṇḍra, Oḍra, Cola, Draviḍa, and Andhaka regions - (were present/subdued).
सागरानूपगांश्चैव ये च पत्तनवासिनः ।
सिंहलान्बर्बरान्म्लेच्छान्ये च जाङ्गलवासिनः ॥१९॥
19. sāgarānūpagāṁścaiva ye ca pattanavāsinaḥ ,
siṁhalānbarbarānmlecchānye ca jāṅgalavāsinaḥ.
19. sāgarānūpagān ca eva ye ca pattanavāsinaḥ
siṃhalān barbarān mlecchān ye ca jāṅgalavāsinaḥ
19. And those who inhabit coastal wetlands and cities, as well as the Sinhala people, the Barbarians, the Mlecchas, and those who dwell in arid regions.
पश्चिमानि च राज्यानि शतशः सागरान्तिकान् ।
पह्लवान्दरदान्सर्वान्किरातान्यवनाञ्शकान् ॥२०॥
20. paścimāni ca rājyāni śataśaḥ sāgarāntikān ,
pahlavāndaradānsarvānkirātānyavanāñśakān.
20. paścimāni ca rājyāni śataśaḥ sāgarāntikān
pahlavān daradān sarvān kirātān yavanān śakān
20. And the western kingdoms, along with hundreds of people from coastal regions; all the Pahlavas, the Daradas, the Kiratas, the Yavanas, and the Shakas.
हारहूणांश्च चीनांश्च तुखारान्सैन्धवांस्तथा ।
जागुडान्रमठान्मुण्डान्स्त्रीराज्यानथ तङ्गणान् ॥२१॥
21. hārahūṇāṁśca cīnāṁśca tukhārānsaindhavāṁstathā ,
jāguḍānramaṭhānmuṇḍānstrīrājyānatha taṅgaṇān.
21. hārahūṇān ca cīnān ca tukhārān saindhavān tathā
jāguḍān ramaṭhān muṇḍān strīrājyān atha taṅgaṇān
21. And the Hārahūṇas, the Cīnas, the Tukhāras, and also the Saindhavas; the Jāguḍas, the Ramaṭhas, the Muṇḍas, and then the Strīrājyas (Women's Kingdoms) and the Taṅgaṇas.
एते चान्ये च बहवो ये च ते भरतर्षभ ।
आगतानहमद्राक्षं यज्ञे ते परिवेषकान् ॥२२॥
22. ete cānye ca bahavo ye ca te bharatarṣabha ,
āgatānahamadrākṣaṁ yajñe te pariveṣakān.
22. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ ye ca te bharatarṣabha
āgatān aham adrākṣam yajñe te pariveṣakān
22. bharatarṣabha aham ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ ye
ca te āgatān yajñe te pariveṣakān adrākṣam
22. O best of Bharatas, I saw these and many other individuals, including those who had arrived, serving as attendants at your Vedic ritual (yajña).
सा ते समृद्धिर्यैरात्ता चपला प्रतिसारिणी ।
आदाय जीवितं तेषामाहरिष्यामि तामहम् ॥२३॥
23. sā te samṛddhiryairāttā capalā pratisāriṇī ,
ādāya jīvitaṁ teṣāmāhariṣyāmi tāmaham.
23. sā te samṛddhiḥ yaiḥ āttā capalā pratisāriṇī
ādāya jīvitam teṣām āhariṣyāmi tām aham
23. That fickle and fleeting prosperity of yours, which they have seized, I will indeed take it away from them after depriving them of their lives.
रामेण सह कौरव्य भीमार्जुनयमैस्तथा ।
अक्रूरगदसाम्बैश्च प्रद्युम्नेनाहुकेन च ।
धृष्टद्युम्नेन वीरेण शिशुपालात्मजेन च ॥२४॥
24. rāmeṇa saha kauravya bhīmārjunayamaistathā ,
akrūragadasāmbaiśca pradyumnenāhukena ca ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnena vīreṇa śiśupālātmajena ca.
24. rāmeṇa saha kauravya bhīmārjunayamaiḥ
tathā akrūragadasāmbaiḥ ca
pradyumnena āhukena ca dhṛṣṭadyumnena
vīreṇa śiśupālātmajena ca
24. O descendant of Kuru, (you will be) with Balarāma, as well as with Bhīma, Arjuna, and the twin sons (Nakula and Sahadeva); and with Akrūra, Gada, Sāmba, Pradyumna, and Āhuka; and with the heroic Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and with Śiśupāla's son (Dhṛṣṭaketu).
दुर्योधनं रणे हत्वा सद्यः कर्णं च भारत ।
दुःशासनं सौबलेयं यश्चान्यः प्रतियोत्स्यते ॥२५॥
25. duryodhanaṁ raṇe hatvā sadyaḥ karṇaṁ ca bhārata ,
duḥśāsanaṁ saubaleyaṁ yaścānyaḥ pratiyotsyate.
25. duryodhanam raṇe hatvā sadyaḥ karṇam ca bhārata
duḥśāsanam saubaleyam yaḥ ca anyaḥ pratiyotsyate
25. O descendant of Bhārata, after immediately killing Duryodhana and Karṇa in battle, and also Duḥśāsana, the son of Subala (Śakuni), and anyone else who will fight against you.
ततस्त्वं हास्तिनपुरे भ्रातृभिः सहितो वसन् ।
धार्तराष्ट्रीं श्रियं प्राप्य प्रशाधि पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥२६॥
26. tatastvaṁ hāstinapure bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito vasan ,
dhārtarāṣṭrīṁ śriyaṁ prāpya praśādhi pṛthivīmimām.
26. tataḥ tvam hāstinapure bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ vasan
dhārtarāṣṭrīm śriyam prāpya praśādhi pṛthivīm imām
26. Thereafter, you, dwelling in Hāstinapura accompanied by your brothers, after attaining the royal fortune belonging to Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, shall govern this earth.
अथैनमब्रवीद्राजा तस्मिन्वीरसमागमे ।
शृण्वत्सु तेषु सर्वेषु धृष्टद्युम्नमुखेषु च ॥२७॥
27. athainamabravīdrājā tasminvīrasamāgame ,
śṛṇvatsu teṣu sarveṣu dhṛṣṭadyumnamukheṣu ca.
27. atha enam abravīt rājā tasmin vīrasamāgame
śṛṇvatsu teṣu sarveṣu dhṛṣṭadyumnamukheṣu ca
27. Then, in that assembly of heroes, with Dhṛṣṭadyumna and all the others listening, the king spoke to him.
प्रतिगृह्णामि ते वाचं सत्यामेतां जनार्दन ।
अमित्रान्मे महाबाहो सानुबन्धान्हनिष्यसि ॥२८॥
28. pratigṛhṇāmi te vācaṁ satyāmetāṁ janārdana ,
amitrānme mahābāho sānubandhānhaniṣyasi.
28. pratigṛhṇāmi te vācam satyām etām janārdana
amitrān me mahābāho sānubandhān haniṣyasi
28. O Janārdana, I accept this truthful promise of yours. O mighty-armed one, you will certainly slay my enemies along with their kinsmen.
वर्षात्त्रयोदशादूर्ध्वं सत्यं मां कुरु केशव ।
प्रतिज्ञातो वने वासो राजमध्ये मया ह्ययम् ॥२९॥
29. varṣāttrayodaśādūrdhvaṁ satyaṁ māṁ kuru keśava ,
pratijñāto vane vāso rājamadhye mayā hyayam.
29. varṣāt trayodaśāt ūrdhvam satyam mām kuru keśava
pratijñātaḥ vane vāsaḥ rājamadhye mayā hi ayam
29. O Keśava, after thirteen years, help me fulfill my word (satyam). Indeed, this period of dwelling in the forest was sworn by me in the assembly of kings.
तद्धर्मराजवचनं प्रतिश्रुत्य सभासदः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगास्ते शमयामासुरञ्जसा ।
केशवं मधुरैर्वाक्यैः कालयुक्तैरमर्षितम् ॥३०॥
30. taddharmarājavacanaṁ pratiśrutya sabhāsadaḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogāste śamayāmāsurañjasā ,
keśavaṁ madhurairvākyaiḥ kālayuktairamarṣitam.
30. tat dharmarājavacanam pratiśrutya
sabhāsadaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogāḥ te
śamayām āsuḥ añjasā keśavam
madhuraiḥ vākyaiḥ kālayuktaiḥ amarṣitam
30. Having heard that statement of the king (Dharmarāja), the assembly members, led by Dhṛṣṭadyumna, quickly appeased the enraged Keśava with sweet and appropriate words.
पाञ्चालीं चाहुरक्लिष्टां वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः ।
दुर्योधनस्तव क्रोधाद्देवि त्यक्ष्यति जीवितम् ।
प्रतिजानीम ते सत्यं मा शुचो वरवर्णिनि ॥३१॥
31. pāñcālīṁ cāhurakliṣṭāṁ vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ ,
duryodhanastava krodhāddevi tyakṣyati jīvitam ,
pratijānīma te satyaṁ mā śuco varavarṇini.
31. pāñcālīm ca āhuḥ akliṣṭām vāsudevasya
śṛṇvataḥ | duryodhanaḥ tava krodhāt
devi tyakṣyati jīvitam | pratijānīma
te satyam mā śucaḥ varavarṇini
31. They said to Draupadi (pāñcālī), who was not distressed, while Vasudeva (vāsudeva) was listening: 'Duryodhana, O Devi, will give up his life out of anger for you. We truly promise you this, O lady of beautiful complexion, do not grieve.'
ये स्म ते कुपितां कृष्णे दृष्ट्वा त्वां प्राहसंस्तदा ।
मांसानि तेषां खादन्तो हसिष्यन्ति मृगद्विजाः ॥३२॥
32. ye sma te kupitāṁ kṛṣṇe dṛṣṭvā tvāṁ prāhasaṁstadā ,
māṁsāni teṣāṁ khādanto hasiṣyanti mṛgadvijāḥ.
32. ye sma te kupitām kṛṣṇe dṛṣṭvā tvām prāhasan tadā
| māṃsāni teṣām khādantaḥ hasiṣyanti mṛgadvijāḥ
32. Those who laughed at you, Kṛṣṇa, when they saw you enraged then - the animals and birds will eat their flesh and laugh.
पास्यन्ति रुधिरं तेषां गृध्रा गोमायवस्तथा ।
उत्तमाङ्गानि कर्षन्तो यैस्त्वं कृष्टा सभातले ॥३३॥
33. pāsyanti rudhiraṁ teṣāṁ gṛdhrā gomāyavastathā ,
uttamāṅgāni karṣanto yaistvaṁ kṛṣṭā sabhātale.
33. pāsyanti rudhiram teṣām gṛdhrāḥ gomāyavaḥ tathā
| uttamāṅgāni karṣantaḥ yaiḥ tvam kṛṣṭā sabhātale
33. Vultures and jackals will drink their blood, dragging the heads of those by whom you were dragged on the assembly floor.
तेषां द्रक्ष्यसि पाञ्चालि गात्राणि पृथिवीतले ।
क्रव्यादैः कृष्यमाणानि भक्ष्यमाणानि चासकृत् ॥३४॥
34. teṣāṁ drakṣyasi pāñcāli gātrāṇi pṛthivītale ,
kravyādaiḥ kṛṣyamāṇāni bhakṣyamāṇāni cāsakṛt.
34. teṣām drakṣyasi pāñcāli gātrāṇi pṛthivītale |
kravyādaiḥ kṛṣyamāṇāni bhakṣyamāṇāni ca asakṛt
34. O Draupadi (pāñcāli), you will see their limbs on the surface of the earth, being repeatedly dragged and devoured by flesh-eating animals.
परिक्लिष्टासि यैस्तत्र यैश्चापि समुपेक्षिता ।
तेषामुत्कृत्तशिरसां भूमिः पास्यति शोणितम् ॥३५॥
35. parikliṣṭāsi yaistatra yaiścāpi samupekṣitā ,
teṣāmutkṛttaśirasāṁ bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam.
35. parikliṣṭā asi yaiḥ tatra yaiḥ ca api samupekṣitā
teṣām utkṛttaśirasām bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam
35. You were tormented by those who were there, and also neglected by them. The earth will drink the blood of those whose heads have been severed.
एवं बहुविधा वाचस्तदोचुः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
सर्वे तेजस्विनः शूराः सर्वे चाहतलक्षणाः ॥३६॥
36. evaṁ bahuvidhā vācastadocuḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
sarve tejasvinaḥ śūrāḥ sarve cāhatalakṣaṇāḥ.
36. evam bahuvidhā vācaḥ tadā ūcuḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ
sarve tejasvinaḥ śūrāḥ sarve ca āhatalakṣaṇāḥ
36. Thus, the best among men spoke many kinds of words at that time. All of them were glorious heroes, and all bore auspicious marks.
ते धर्मराजेन वृता वर्षादूर्ध्वं त्रयोदशात् ।
पुरस्कृत्योपयास्यन्ति वासुदेवं महारथाः ॥३७॥
37. te dharmarājena vṛtā varṣādūrdhvaṁ trayodaśāt ,
puraskṛtyopayāsyanti vāsudevaṁ mahārathāḥ.
37. te dharmarājena vṛtāḥ varṣāt ūrdhvam trayodaśāt
puraskṛtya upayāsyanti vāsudevam mahārathāḥ
37. Chosen by the King of (dharma) justice, after thirteen years, those great warriors will approach Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), placing him at their front.
रामश्च कृष्णश्च धनंजयश्च प्रद्युम्नसाम्बौ युयुधानभीमौ ।
माद्रीसुतौ केकयराजपुत्राः पाञ्चालपुत्राः सह धर्मराज्ञा ॥३८॥
38. rāmaśca kṛṣṇaśca dhanaṁjayaśca; pradyumnasāmbau yuyudhānabhīmau ,
mādrīsutau kekayarājaputrāḥ; pāñcālaputrāḥ saha dharmarājñā.
38. rāmaḥ ca kṛṣṇaḥ ca dhanaṃjayaḥ
ca pradyumnasāmbau yuyudhānabhīmau
mādrīsutau kekayarājaputrāḥ
pāñcālaputrāḥ saha dharmarājñā
38. Rāma, and Kṛṣṇa, and Dhanañjaya, Pradyumna and Sāmba, Yuyudhāna and Bhīma, the two sons of Mādrī, the princes of Kekaya, and the sons of Pañcāla, along with the King of (dharma) justice.
एतान्सर्वाँल्लोकवीरानजेयान्महात्मनः सानुबन्धान्ससैन्यान् ।
को जीवितार्थी समरे प्रत्युदीयात्क्रुद्धान्सिंहान्केसरिणो यथैव ॥३९॥
39. etānsarvāँllokavīrānajeyā;nmahātmanaḥ sānubandhānsasainyān ,
ko jīvitārthī samare pratyudīyā;tkruddhānsiṁhānkesariṇo yathaiva.
39. etān sarvān lokavīrān ajeyān
mahātmanaḥ sānubandhān sasainyān kaḥ
jīvitārthī samare pratyudīyāt
kruddhān siṃhān kesariṇaḥ yathā iva
39. Who, desiring to live, would dare to confront these unconquerable, great-souled (mahātman) heroes of the world, accompanied by their kinsmen and armies, just as one would face enraged, maned lions in battle?
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
यन्माब्रवीद्विदुरो द्यूतकाले त्वं पाण्डवाञ्जेष्यसि चेन्नरेन्द्र ।
ध्रुवं कुरूणामयमन्तकालो महाभयो भविता शोणितौघः ॥४०॥
40. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yanmābravīdviduro dyūtakāle; tvaṁ pāṇḍavāñjeṣyasi cennarendra ,
dhruvaṁ kurūṇāmayamantakālo; mahābhayo bhavitā śoṇitaughaḥ.
40. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca yat mā abravīt
viduraḥ dyūtakāle tvam pāṇḍavān jeṣyasi
cet narendra dhruvam kurūṇām ayam
antakālaḥ mahābhayaḥ bhavitā śoṇitaughaḥ
40. Dhritarashtra said, "What Vidura told me during the gambling match was this: 'O King, if you conquer the Pandavas, then surely this will be the end time for the Kurus, and a greatly terrifying flood of blood will certainly come to pass.'"
मन्ये तथा तद्भवितेति सूत यथा क्षत्ता प्राह वचः पुरा माम् ।
असंशयं भविता युद्धमेतद्गते काले पाण्डवानां यथोक्तम् ॥४१॥
41. manye tathā tadbhaviteti sūta; yathā kṣattā prāha vacaḥ purā mām ,
asaṁśayaṁ bhavitā yuddhameta;dgate kāle pāṇḍavānāṁ yathoktam.
41. manye tathā tat bhavitā iti sūta
yathā kṣattā prāha vacaḥ purā
mām asaṃśayam bhavitā yuddham etat
gate kāle pāṇḍavānām yathoktam
41. O Sūta, I believe it will happen just as Vidura (Kṣattā) told me previously. Without a doubt, this war will occur, and the foretold time for the Pandavas has now arrived.
