वैशंपायन उवाच ।
धृतराष्ट्रस्य तद्वाक्यं निशम्य सहसौबलः ।
दुर्योधनमिदं काले कर्णो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya tadvākyaṁ niśamya sahasaubalaḥ ,
duryodhanamidaṁ kāle karṇo vacanamabravīt.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca dhṛtarāṣṭrasya tat vākyam niśamya
sahasaubalaḥ duryodhanam idam kāle karṇaḥ vacanam abravīt
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard Dhṛtarāṣṭra's words, Karṇa, accompanied by Saubala (Śakuni), spoke these words to Duryodhana at that opportune moment.
प्रव्राज्य पाण्डवान्वीरान्स्वेन वीर्येण भारत ।
भुङ्क्ष्वेमां पृथिवीमेको दिवं शम्बरहा यथा ॥२॥
2. pravrājya pāṇḍavānvīrānsvena vīryeṇa bhārata ,
bhuṅkṣvemāṁ pṛthivīmeko divaṁ śambarahā yathā.
2. pravrājya pāṇḍavān vīrān svena vīryeṇa bhārata |
bhuṅkṣva imām pṛthivīm ekaḥ divam śambarāhā yathā
2. O descendant of Bharata, having banished the heroic Pāṇḍavas through your own valor, now enjoy this earth alone, just as Indra, the slayer of Śambara, enjoys heaven.
प्राच्याश्च दाक्षिणात्याश्च प्रतीच्योदीच्यवासिनः ।
कृताः करप्रदाः सर्वे राजानस्ते नराधिप ॥३॥
3. prācyāśca dākṣiṇātyāśca pratīcyodīcyavāsinaḥ ,
kṛtāḥ karapradāḥ sarve rājānaste narādhipa.
3. prācyāḥ ca dākṣiṇātyāḥ ca pratīcyaudīcyavāsinaḥ
| kṛtāḥ karapradāḥ sarve rājānaḥ te narādhipa
3. And all the kings dwelling in the east, south, west, and north, O lord of men, have been made your tribute-payers.
या हि सा दीप्यमानेव पाण्डवान्भजते पुरा ।
साद्य लक्ष्मीस्त्वया राजन्नवाप्ता भ्रातृभिः सह ॥४॥
4. yā hi sā dīpyamāneva pāṇḍavānbhajate purā ,
sādya lakṣmīstvayā rājannavāptā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha.
4. yā hi sā dīpyamānā iva pāṇḍavān bhajate purā | sā
adya lakṣmīḥ tvayā rājan avāptā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
4. Indeed, that same royal splendor (lakṣmī) which shone brightly and formerly belonged to the Pāṇḍavas, O King, has now been obtained by you along with your brothers.
इन्द्रप्रस्थगते यां तां दीप्यमानां युधिष्ठिरे ।
अपश्याम श्रियं राजन्नचिरं शोककर्शिताः ॥५॥
5. indraprasthagate yāṁ tāṁ dīpyamānāṁ yudhiṣṭhire ,
apaśyāma śriyaṁ rājannaciraṁ śokakarśitāḥ.
5. indraprasthagate yām tām dīpyamānām yudhiṣṭhire
| apaśyāma śriyam rājan aciram śokakarśitāḥ
5. O King, it was not long ago that we ourselves, afflicted by sorrow, beheld that very royal splendor (śrī) shining brilliantly with Yudhiṣṭhira, when he was in Indraprastha.
सा तु बुद्धिबलेनेयं राज्ञस्तस्माद्युधिष्ठिरात् ।
त्वयाक्षिप्ता महाबाहो दीप्यमानेव दृश्यते ॥६॥
6. sā tu buddhibaleneyaṁ rājñastasmādyudhiṣṭhirāt ,
tvayākṣiptā mahābāho dīpyamāneva dṛśyate.
6. sā tu buddhibalena iyam rājñaḥ tasmāt yudhiṣṭhirāt
tvayā ākṣiptā mahābāho dīpyamānā iva dṛśyate
6. O mighty-armed one, that wisdom, empowered by intellect, which belonged to King Yudhiṣṭhira, has been seized by you and now appears as though it were shining brilliantly.
तथैव तव राजेन्द्र राजानः परवीरहन् ।
शासनेऽधिष्ठिताः सर्वे किं कुर्म इति वादिनः ॥७॥
7. tathaiva tava rājendra rājānaḥ paravīrahan ,
śāsane'dhiṣṭhitāḥ sarve kiṁ kurma iti vādinaḥ.
7. tathā eva tava rājendra rājānaḥ paravīrahan
śāsane adhiṣṭhitāḥ sarve kim kurmaḥ iti vādinaḥ
7. Just so, O king of kings (rājendra), O slayer of enemy heroes (paravīrahan), all the kings are established under your command, asking, 'What should we do?'
तवाद्य पृथिवी राजन्निखिला सागराम्बरा ।
सपर्वतवना देवी सग्रामनगराकरा ।
नानावनोद्देशवती पत्तनैरुपशोभिता ॥८॥
8. tavādya pṛthivī rājannikhilā sāgarāmbarā ,
saparvatavanā devī sagrāmanagarākarā ,
nānāvanoddeśavatī pattanairupaśobhitā.
8. tava adya pṛthivī rājan nikhilā sāgarāmbarā saparvatavanā
devī sagrāmanagarākarā nānāvanoddeśavatī pattanaiḥ upaśobhitā
8. O King, today this entire earth (pṛthivī) is yours, bounded by oceans, replete with mountains and forests, divine, encompassing villages, cities, and mines, endowed with diverse forest areas, and adorned with towns.
वन्द्यमानो द्विजै राजन्पूज्यमानश्च राजभिः ।
पौरुषाद्दिवि देवेषु भ्राजसे रश्मिवानिव ॥९॥
9. vandyamāno dvijai rājanpūjyamānaśca rājabhiḥ ,
pauruṣāddivi deveṣu bhrājase raśmivāniva.
9. vandyamānaḥ dvijaiḥ rājan pūjyamānaḥ ca rājabhiḥ
pauruṣāt divi deveṣu bhrājase raśmivān iva
9. O King, you are revered by the twice-born (dvijaiḥ) and honored by kings. By virtue of your valor (pauruṣāt), you shine among the gods in heaven (divi) as if you were the sun (raśmivān).
रुद्रैरिव यमो राजा मरुद्भिरिव वासवः ।
कुरुभिस्त्वं वृतो राजन्भासि नक्षत्रराडिव ॥१०॥
10. rudrairiva yamo rājā marudbhiriva vāsavaḥ ,
kurubhistvaṁ vṛto rājanbhāsi nakṣatrarāḍiva.
10. rudraiḥ iva yamaḥ rājā marudbhiḥ iva vāsavaḥ
kurubhiḥ tvam vṛtaḥ rājan bhāsi nakṣatrarāṭ iva
10. O King, you shine like King Yama surrounded by the Rudras, or like Indra surrounded by the Maruts. Surrounded by the Kurus, you shine like the moon, the lord of the stars.
ये स्म ते नाद्रियन्तेऽऽज्ञा नोद्विजन्ते कदा च न ।
पश्यामस्ताञ्श्रिया हीनान्पाण्डवान्वनवासिनः ॥११॥
11. ye sma te nādriyante''jñā nodvijante kadā ca na ,
paśyāmastāñśriyā hīnānpāṇḍavānvanavāsinaḥ.
11. ye sma te na ādriyante ājñā na udvijante kadā ca
na paśyāmaḥ tān śriyā hīnān pāṇḍavān vanavāsinaḥ
11. We now see those Pandavas - who formerly neither respected our commands nor were ever perturbed - deprived of their prosperity (śrī) and living in the forest.
श्रूयन्ते हि महाराज सरो द्वैतवनं प्रति ।
वसन्तः पाण्डवाः सार्धं ब्राह्मणैर्वनवासिभिः ॥१२॥
12. śrūyante hi mahārāja saro dvaitavanaṁ prati ,
vasantaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sārdhaṁ brāhmaṇairvanavāsibhiḥ.
12. śrūyante hi mahārāja saraḥ dvaitavanam prati
vasantaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sārdham brāhmaṇaiḥ vanavāsibhiḥ
12. O great King, it is indeed heard that the Pandavas are residing near Lake Dvaitavana, accompanied by Brahmins who also dwell in the forest.
स प्रयाहि महाराज श्रिया परमया युतः ।
प्रतपन्पाण्डुपुत्रांस्त्वं रश्मिवानिव तेजसा ॥१३॥
13. sa prayāhi mahārāja śriyā paramayā yutaḥ ,
pratapanpāṇḍuputrāṁstvaṁ raśmivāniva tejasā.
13. sa prayāhi mahārāja śriyā paramayā yutaḥ
pratapan pāṇḍuputrān tvam raśmivān iva tejasā
13. O great King, you should proceed, endowed with supreme glory (śrī), tormenting the sons of Pandu like the sun (raśmīvat) with its brilliance (tejas).
स्थितो राज्ये च्युतान्राज्याच्छ्रिया हीनाञ्श्रिया वृतः ।
असमृद्धान्समृद्धार्थः पश्य पाण्डुसुतान्नृप ॥१४॥
14. sthito rājye cyutānrājyācchriyā hīnāñśriyā vṛtaḥ ,
asamṛddhānsamṛddhārthaḥ paśya pāṇḍusutānnṛpa.
14. sthitaḥ rājye cyutān rājyāt śriyā hīnān śriyā vṛtaḥ
asamṛddhān samṛddhārthaḥ paśya pāṇḍusutān nṛpa
14. O King, behold the sons of Pāṇḍu: you are established in your kingdom, surrounded by prosperity and abundant wealth, while they are deprived of their kingdom, devoid of prosperity, and impoverished.
महाभिजनसंपन्नं भद्रे महति संस्थितम् ।
पाण्डवास्त्वाभिवीक्षन्तां ययातिमिव नाहुषम् ॥१५॥
15. mahābhijanasaṁpannaṁ bhadre mahati saṁsthitam ,
pāṇḍavāstvābhivīkṣantāṁ yayātimiva nāhuṣam.
15. mahābhijanasampannam bhadre mahati saṃsthitam
pāṇḍavāḥ tvā abhivīkṣantām yayātim iva nāhuṣam
15. May the Pāṇḍavas behold you, who are endowed with a noble lineage and established in great prosperity, just as they would behold Yayāti, the son of Nahuṣa.
यां श्रियं सुहृदश्चैव दुर्हृदश्च विशां पते ।
पश्यन्ति पुरुषे दीप्तां सा समर्था भवत्युत ॥१६॥
16. yāṁ śriyaṁ suhṛdaścaiva durhṛdaśca viśāṁ pate ,
paśyanti puruṣe dīptāṁ sā samarthā bhavatyuta.
16. yām śriyam suhṛdaḥ ca eva durhṛdaḥ ca viśām pate
paśyanti puruṣe dīptām sā samarthā bhavati uta
16. O Lord of the people, that splendor which both friends and enemies perceive shining in a man, that indeed becomes truly effective.
समस्थो विषमस्थान्हि दुर्हृदो योऽभिवीक्षते ।
जगतीस्थानिवाद्रिस्थः किं ततः परमं सुखम् ॥१७॥
17. samastho viṣamasthānhi durhṛdo yo'bhivīkṣate ,
jagatīsthānivādristhaḥ kiṁ tataḥ paramaṁ sukham.
17. samasthaḥ viṣamasthān hi durhṛdaḥ yaḥ abhivīkṣate
jagatīsthān iva adristhaḥ kim tataḥ paramam sukham
17. What supreme happiness is there beyond that which a person experiences who, while himself being in a favorable position, looks upon his enemies who are in a difficult situation, just as one standing on a mountain looks down upon those on the ground?
न पुत्रधनलाभेन न राज्येनापि विन्दति ।
प्रीतिं नृपतिशार्दूल याममित्राघदर्शनात् ॥१८॥
18. na putradhanalābhena na rājyenāpi vindati ,
prītiṁ nṛpatiśārdūla yāmamitrāghadarśanāt.
18. na putradhanalābhena na rājyena api vindati
prītim nṛpatiśārdūla yām amitrāghadarśanāt
18. O tiger among kings, one does not find the same joy from the gain of sons, wealth, or even a kingdom, as one does from witnessing the distress of one's enemies.
किं नु तस्य सुखं न स्यादाश्रमे यो धनंजयम् ।
अभिवीक्षेत सिद्धार्थो वल्कलाजिनवाससम् ॥१९॥
19. kiṁ nu tasya sukhaṁ na syādāśrame yo dhanaṁjayam ,
abhivīkṣeta siddhārtho valkalājinavāsasam.
19. kim nu tasya sukham na syāt āśrame yaḥ dhanañjayam
abhivīkṣeta siddhārthaḥ valkalājinavāsasam
19. What happiness would one not possess, if one, having achieved one's purpose (artha), were to behold Arjuna (Dhanañjaya) in the hermitage, clad in bark and deerskin?
सुवाससो हि ते भार्या वल्कलाजिनवाससम् ।
पश्यन्त्वसुखितां कृष्णां सा च निर्विद्यतां पुनः ।
विनिन्दतां तथात्मानं जीवितं च धनच्युता ॥२०॥
20. suvāsaso hi te bhāryā valkalājinavāsasam ,
paśyantvasukhitāṁ kṛṣṇāṁ sā ca nirvidyatāṁ punaḥ ,
vinindatāṁ tathātmānaṁ jīvitaṁ ca dhanacyutā.
20. suvāsasaḥ hi te bhāryāḥ valkalājinavāsasam
paśyantu asukhitām kṛṣṇām
sā ca nirvidyatām punaḥ vinindatām
tathā ātmānam jīvitam ca dhanacyutā
20. Indeed, let your well-dressed wives behold Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), clad in bark and deerskin and unhappy. And let her, too, again become utterly disillusioned, and thus, deprived of wealth, condemn herself and her very life.
न तथा हि सभामध्ये तस्या भवितुमर्हति ।
वैमनस्यं यथा दृष्ट्वा तव भार्याः स्वलंकृताः ॥२१॥
21. na tathā hi sabhāmadhye tasyā bhavitumarhati ,
vaimanasyaṁ yathā dṛṣṭvā tava bhāryāḥ svalaṁkṛtāḥ.
21. na tathā hi sabhāmadhye tasyāḥ bhavitum arhati
vaimanasyam yathā dṛṣṭvā tava bhāryāḥ svalaṅkṛtāḥ
21. Indeed, she should not experience such mental distress in the assembly as she would upon seeing your well-adorned wives.
एवमुक्त्वा तु राजानं कर्णः शकुनिना सह ।
तूष्णीं बभूवतुरुभौ वाक्यान्ते जनमेजय ॥२२॥
22. evamuktvā tu rājānaṁ karṇaḥ śakuninā saha ,
tūṣṇīṁ babhūvaturubhau vākyānte janamejaya.
22. evam uktvā tu rājānam karṇaḥ śakuninā saha
tūṣṇīm babhūvatuḥ ubhau vākyānte janamejaya
22. O Janamejaya, having thus spoken to the king, Karna and Shakuni both became silent at the end of their speech.
