Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Jayadratha, however, upon seeing the two brothers with their weapons raised, became greatly distressed. Desiring to save his life, he quickly fled without hesitation.

The powerful Bhīmasena, getting down from his chariot, rushed after Jayadratha as he was running. Extremely furious, Bhīma then seized him by his hair.

Having thus spoken, Bhima (Vṛkodaraḥ) then, with a crescent-shaped arrow, cut his crest-hairs into five parts while he (the other) spoke not a word.

Having thus humiliated the king, Bhima (Vṛkodaraḥ) then said: 'O fool, if you wish to live, listen to the reason I am telling you.'

You must declare 'I am your slave' in all assemblies and gatherings. In this way, I shall grant you your life; this is the prescribed conduct (dharma) for one defeated in battle.

Then Bhima, the wolf-bellied (Vṛkodara) Pāṇḍava, having bound him (Jayadratha) while he was struggling, made him ascend the chariot, unconscious and covered in dust.

Then, Bhima, a Pāṇḍava who followed Yudhiṣṭhira (Pārthānuga), mounted that chariot and, having arrived at the hermitage, approached Yudhiṣṭhira who was situated in its center.

Go, you are not a slave; you are released. Do not ever commit such an act again. O woman-lusting one, shame on you! You are base and surrounded by base helpers. Indeed, who else but you, the lowest of men, would do such a thing?
