प्रियकृन्मतमाज्ञाय पूर्वं दुर्योधनस्य तत् ।
प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमासीनं शकुनिः सौबलस्तदा ॥२॥

उपगम्य महाप्राज्ञं शकुनिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. duryodhanavacaḥ śrutvā dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ janādhipam ,
upagamya mahāprājñaṁ śakunirvākyamabravīt.

3. Having heard Duryodhana's words, Śakuni approached the great sage Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of the people, and spoke these words.
दुर्योधनो महाराज विवर्णो हरिणः कृशः ।
दीनश्चिन्तापरश्चैव तद्विद्धि भरतर्षभ ॥४॥
4. duryodhano mahārāja vivarṇo hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ,
dīnaścintāparaścaiva tadviddhi bharatarṣabha.

4. O great king (mahārāja), Duryodhana is pale, faint, and emaciated. He is distressed and entirely absorbed in worry. Know this, O best among the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha).
न वै परीक्षसे सम्यगसह्यं शत्रुसंभवम् ।
ज्येष्ठपुत्रस्य शोकं त्वं किमर्थं नावबुध्यसे ॥५॥
5. na vai parīkṣase samyagasahyaṁ śatrusaṁbhavam ,
jyeṣṭhaputrasya śokaṁ tvaṁ kimarthaṁ nāvabudhyase.
5. na vai parīkṣase samyak asahyam śatrusambhavam
jyeṣṭhaputrasya śokam tvam kimartham na avabudhyase
5. You certainly do not properly observe the unbearable sorrow arising from enemies in your eldest son. Why do you not understand it?
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
दुर्योधन कुतोमूलं भृशमार्तोऽसि पुत्रक ।
श्रोतव्यश्चेन्मया सोऽर्थो ब्रूहि मे कुरुनन्दन ॥६॥
6. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
duryodhana kutomūlaṁ bhṛśamārto'si putraka ,
śrotavyaścenmayā so'rtho brūhi me kurunandana.
6. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca duryodhana kutaḥ mūlam bhṛśam ārtaḥ asi
putraka śrotavyaḥ cet mayā saḥ arthaḥ brūhi me kurunandana
6. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'My dear son (putraka) Duryodhana, what is the origin of your extreme distress? If that matter (artha) is to be heard by me, O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), then tell me.'
अयं त्वां शकुनिः प्राह विवर्णं हरिणं कृशम् ।
चिन्तयंश्च न पश्यामि शोकस्य तव संभवम् ॥७॥
7. ayaṁ tvāṁ śakuniḥ prāha vivarṇaṁ hariṇaṁ kṛśam ,
cintayaṁśca na paśyāmi śokasya tava saṁbhavam.
7. ayam tvām śakuniḥ prāha vivarṇam hariṇam kṛśam
cintayan ca na paśyāmi śokasya tava sambhavam
7. This Śakuni says that you are pale, faint, and emaciated. And even though I am thinking, I do not see the origin of your sorrow.
ऐश्वर्यं हि महत्पुत्र त्वयि सर्वं समर्पितम् ।
भ्रातरः सुहृदश्चैव नाचरन्ति तवाप्रियम् ॥८॥
8. aiśvaryaṁ hi mahatputra tvayi sarvaṁ samarpitam ,
bhrātaraḥ suhṛdaścaiva nācaranti tavāpriyam.
8. aiśvaryam hi mahat putra tvayi sarvam samarpitam
bhrātaraḥ suhṛdaḥ ca eva na ācaranti tava apriyam
8. Indeed, great sovereignty (aiśvarya) and everything is entrusted to you, my son. Your brothers and friends certainly do not act against your wishes.
आच्छादयसि प्रावारानश्नासि पिशितौदनम् ।
आजानेया वहन्ति त्वां केनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥९॥
9. ācchādayasi prāvārānaśnāsi piśitaudanam ,
ājāneyā vahanti tvāṁ kenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
9. ācchādayasi prāvārān aśnāsi piśitaudanam
ājāneyā vahanti tvām kena asi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
9. You cover yourself with cloaks (prāvāra), and you eat meat and rice (piśitāudana). Thoroughbred horses (ājāneya) carry you, so by what means are you thin like a deer?
शयनानि महार्हाणि योषितश्च मनोरमाः ।
गुणवन्ति च वेश्मानि विहाराश्च यथासुखम् ॥१०॥
10. śayanāni mahārhāṇi yoṣitaśca manoramāḥ ,
guṇavanti ca veśmāni vihārāśca yathāsukham.
10. śayanāni mahārhāṇi yoṣitaḥ ca manoramāḥ
guṇavanti ca veśmāni vihārāḥ ca yathāsukham
10. You have valuable beds, charming women, well-appointed houses, and enjoyments according to your desire.
देवानामिव ते सर्वं वाचि बद्धं न संशयः ।
स दीन इव दुर्धर्षः कस्माच्छोचसि पुत्रक ॥११॥
11. devānāmiva te sarvaṁ vāci baddhaṁ na saṁśayaḥ ,
sa dīna iva durdharṣaḥ kasmācchocasi putraka.
11. devānām iva te sarvam vāci baddham na saṃśayaḥ
sa dīnaḥ iva durdharṣaḥ kasmāt śocasi putraka
11. For you, everything is like that of the gods; it is fixed by declaration, there is no doubt. Though you are formidable, you appear like a poor man. Why do you lament, my son?
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
अश्नाम्याच्छादये चाहं यथा कुपुरुषस्तथा ।
अमर्षं धारये चोग्रं तितिक्षन्कालपर्ययम् ॥१२॥
12. duryodhana uvāca ,
aśnāmyācchādaye cāhaṁ yathā kupuruṣastathā ,
amarṣaṁ dhāraye cograṁ titikṣankālaparyayam.
12. duryodhana uvāca | aśnāmi ācchādaye ca ahaṃ yathā kupuruṣaḥ
tathā | amarṣaṃ dhāraye ca ugraṃ titikṣan kālaparyayam
12. Duryodhana said: "I eat and clothe myself just like an ignoble man. I also harbor fierce indignation, enduring the turn of fate."
अमर्षणः स्वाः प्रकृतीरभिभूय परे स्थिताः ।
क्लेशान्मुमुक्षुः परजान्स वै पुरुष उच्यते ॥१३॥
13. amarṣaṇaḥ svāḥ prakṛtīrabhibhūya pare sthitāḥ ,
kleśānmumukṣuḥ parajānsa vai puruṣa ucyate.
13. amarṣaṇaḥ svāḥ prakṛtīḥ abhibhūya pare sthitāḥ
| kleśān mumukṣuḥ parajān sa vai puruṣaḥ ucyate
13. A person (puruṣa) who is intolerant [of injustice], and who overcomes his own internal dispositions (prakṛti) that arise in interaction with others, and desires to be free from troubles originating from others - he is indeed called a [true] man (puruṣa).
संतोषो वै श्रियं हन्ति अभिमानश्च भारत ।
अनुक्रोशभये चोभे यैर्वृतो नाश्नुते महत् ॥१४॥
14. saṁtoṣo vai śriyaṁ hanti abhimānaśca bhārata ,
anukrośabhaye cobhe yairvṛto nāśnute mahat.
14. santoṣaḥ vai śriyaṃ hanti abhimānaḥ ca bhārata |
anukrośabhaye ca ubhe yaiḥ vṛtaḥ na aśnute mahat
14. Indeed, excessive contentment and arrogance destroy prosperity (śrī), O Bhārata. And both pity and fear - a person encompassed by these does not attain greatness.
न मामवति तद्भुक्तं श्रियं दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरे ।
ज्वलन्तीमिव कौन्तेये विवर्णकरणीं मम ॥१५॥
15. na māmavati tadbhuktaṁ śriyaṁ dṛṣṭvā yudhiṣṭhire ,
jvalantīmiva kaunteye vivarṇakaraṇīṁ mama.
15. na mām avati tat bhuktaṃ śriyaṃ dṛṣṭvā yudhiṣṭhire
| jvalantīm iva kaunteye vivarṇakaraṇīṃ mama
15. O Yudhishthira, that which I have enjoyed does not protect me when I behold the prosperity (śrī) of Kaunteya (Arjuna), which blazes like fire and makes me turn pale.
सपत्नानृध्यतोऽऽत्मानं हीयमानं निशाम्य च ।
अदृश्यामपि कौन्तेये स्थितां पश्यन्निवोद्यताम् ।
तस्मादहं विवर्णश्च दीनश्च हरिणः कृशः ॥१६॥
16. sapatnānṛdhyato''tmānaṁ hīyamānaṁ niśāmya ca ,
adṛśyāmapi kaunteye sthitāṁ paśyannivodyatām ,
tasmādahaṁ vivarṇaśca dīnaśca hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ.
16. sapātnān ṛdhyataḥ ātmānam hīyamānam
niśāmya ca adṛśyām api kaunteye
sthitām paśyan iva udyatām tasmāt aham
vivarṇaḥ ca dīnaḥ ca hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ
16. Having observed my enemies prospering and myself (ātman) diminishing, and as if seeing my own unseen and rising indignation residing within Arjuna (Kaunteya), I am therefore pale, miserable, and emaciated like a frightened deer.
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि स्नातका गृहमेधिनः ।
त्रिंशद्दासीक एकैको यान्बिभर्ति युधिष्ठिरः ॥१७॥
17. aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi snātakā gṛhamedhinaḥ ,
triṁśaddāsīka ekaiko yānbibharti yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
17. aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi snātakāḥ gṛhamedhinaḥ
triṃśaddāsīkaḥ ekaikaḥ yān bibharti yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
17. Yudhishthira maintains eighty-eight thousand householder graduates, each of whom has thirty female servants.
दशान्यानि सहस्राणि नित्यं तत्रान्नमुत्तमम् ।
भुञ्जते रुक्मपात्रीभिर्युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने ॥१८॥
18. daśānyāni sahasrāṇi nityaṁ tatrānnamuttamam ,
bhuñjate rukmapātrībhiryudhiṣṭhiraniveśane.
18. daśa anyāni sahasrāṇi nityam tatra annam uttamam
bhuñjate rukmapātrībhiḥ yudhiṣṭhiraniveśane
18. Ten other thousands of people daily partake of excellent food there in Yudhishthira's residence, using golden plates.
कदलीमृगमोकानि कृष्णश्यामारुणानि च ।
काम्बोजः प्राहिणोत्तस्मै परार्ध्यानपि कम्बलान् ॥१९॥
19. kadalīmṛgamokāni kṛṣṇaśyāmāruṇāni ca ,
kāmbojaḥ prāhiṇottasmai parārdhyānapi kambalān.
19. kadalīmṛgamokāni kṛṣṇaśyāmāruṇāni ca kāmbojaḥ
prāhiṇot tasmai parārdhyān api kambalān
19. The Kambojan king sent to him (Yudhishthira) blankets that were made of kadalī deer hair, black, dark-blue, and reddish, and even of the highest value.
रथयोषिद्गवाश्वस्य शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
त्रिंशतं चोष्ट्रवामीनां शतानि विचरन्त्युत ॥२०॥
20. rathayoṣidgavāśvasya śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
triṁśataṁ coṣṭravāmīnāṁ śatāni vicarantyuta.
20. rathayoṣidgavāśvasya śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
triṃśatam ca uṣṭravāmīnām śatāni vicaranti uta
20. And then, hundreds and thousands of chariots, women, cows, and horses, and also three thousand female camels, move about.
पृथग्विधानि रत्नानि पार्थिवाः पृथिवीपते ।
आहरन्क्रतुमुख्येऽस्मिन्कुन्तीपुत्राय भूरिशः ॥२१॥
21. pṛthagvidhāni ratnāni pārthivāḥ pṛthivīpate ,
āharankratumukhye'sminkuntīputrāya bhūriśaḥ.
21. pṛthagvidhāni ratnāni pārthivāḥ pṛthivīpate
āharan kratumukhye asmin kuntīputrāya bhūriśaḥ
21. O lord of the earth, kings brought various kinds of jewels and treasures in great quantities for the son of Kunti (Arjuna) in this principal Vedic ritual (yajña).
न क्वचिद्धि मया दृष्टस्तादृशो नैव च श्रुतः ।
यादृग्धनागमो यज्ञे पाण्डुपुत्रस्य धीमतः ॥२२॥
22. na kvaciddhi mayā dṛṣṭastādṛśo naiva ca śrutaḥ ,
yādṛgdhanāgamo yajñe pāṇḍuputrasya dhīmataḥ.
22. na kvacit hi mayā dṛṣṭaḥ tādṛśaḥ na eva ca śrutaḥ
yādṛk dhanāgamaḥ yajñe pāṇḍuputrasya dhīmataḥ
22. Indeed, I have never seen or even heard of such an accumulation of wealth as was received in the Vedic ritual (yajña) of the intelligent son of Pāṇḍu.
अपर्यन्तं धनौघं तं दृष्ट्वा शत्रोरहं नृप ।
शर्म नैवाधिगच्छामि चिन्तयानोऽनिशं विभो ॥२३॥
23. aparyantaṁ dhanaughaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā śatrorahaṁ nṛpa ,
śarma naivādhigacchāmi cintayāno'niśaṁ vibho.
23. aparyantam dhanaigham tam dṛṣṭvā śatroḥ aham nṛpa
śarma na eva adhigacchāmi cintayānaḥ aniśam vibho
23. O King, O mighty one, upon seeing that endless flood of wealth belonging to the enemy, I am constantly worried and never find peace.
ब्राह्मणा वाटधानाश्च गोमन्तः शतसंघशः ।
त्रैखर्वं बलिमादाय द्वारि तिष्ठन्ति वारिताः ॥२४॥
24. brāhmaṇā vāṭadhānāśca gomantaḥ śatasaṁghaśaḥ ,
traikharvaṁ balimādāya dvāri tiṣṭhanti vāritāḥ.
24. brāhmaṇāḥ vāṭadhānāḥ ca gomantaḥ śatasaṅghaśaḥ
traikharvam balim ādāya dvāri tiṣṭhanti vāritāḥ
24. Hundreds of groups of Brahmins and Vāṭadhānas, rich in cows, stood at the gate, prevented from entering, having brought a tribute of three-fourths.
कमण्डलूनुपादाय जातरूपमयाञ्शुभान् ।
एवं बलिं समादाय प्रवेशं लेभिरे ततः ॥२५॥
25. kamaṇḍalūnupādāya jātarūpamayāñśubhān ,
evaṁ baliṁ samādāya praveśaṁ lebhire tataḥ.
25. kamaṇḍalūn upādāya jātarūpamayān śubhān
evam balim samādāya praveśam lebhire tataḥ
25. They gained entrance thereafter, having thus collected the tribute and carrying auspicious, golden water-pots.
यन्नैव मधु शक्राय धारयन्त्यमरस्त्रियः ।
तदस्मै कांस्यमाहार्षीद्वारुणं कलशोदधिः ॥२६॥
26. yannaiva madhu śakrāya dhārayantyamarastriyaḥ ,
tadasmai kāṁsyamāhārṣīdvāruṇaṁ kalaśodadhiḥ.
26. yat na eva madhu śakrāya dhārayanti amarastriyaḥ
tat asmai kāṃsyam āhārṣīt vāruṇam kalaśodadhiḥ
26. The pitcher-ocean brought to him that bronze vessel, sacred to Varuṇa, which celestial women never even offer as honey to Indra.
शैक्यं रुक्मसहस्रस्य बहुरत्नविभूषितम् ।
दृष्ट्वा च मम तत्सर्वं ज्वररूपमिवाभवत् ॥२७॥
27. śaikyaṁ rukmasahasrasya bahuratnavibhūṣitam ,
dṛṣṭvā ca mama tatsarvaṁ jvararūpamivābhavat.
27. śaikyam rukmasahasrasya bahuratnavibhūṣitam
dṛṣṭvā ca mama tat sarvam jvararūpam iva abhavat
27. When I saw that entire necklace, worth a thousand gold pieces and adorned with many jewels, it became like a fever to me.
गृहीत्वा तत्तु गच्छन्ति समुद्रौ पूर्वदक्षिणौ ।
तथैव पश्चिमं यान्ति गृहीत्वा भरतर्षभ ॥२८॥
28. gṛhītvā tattu gacchanti samudrau pūrvadakṣiṇau ,
tathaiva paścimaṁ yānti gṛhītvā bharatarṣabha.
28. gṛhītvā tat tu gacchanti samudrau pūrvadakṣiṇau
tathā eva paścimaṃ yānti gṛhītvā bharatarṣabha
28. O best among the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), taking that, they proceed to the eastern and southern oceans. Similarly, they journey west, also taking it.
उत्तरं तु न गच्छन्ति विना तात पतत्रिभिः ।
इदं चाद्भुतमत्रासीत्तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥२९॥
29. uttaraṁ tu na gacchanti vinā tāta patatribhiḥ ,
idaṁ cādbhutamatrāsīttanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu.
29. uttaraṃ tu na gacchanti vinā tāta patatribhiḥ
idaṃ ca adbhutaṃ atra āsīt tat me nigadataḥ śṛṇu
29. O dear one (tāta), they do not, however, go north without birds. And this was a wonder here; listen to that as I relate it.
पूर्णे शतसहस्रे तु विप्राणां परिविष्यताम् ।
स्थापिता तत्र संज्ञाभूच्छङ्खो ध्मायति नित्यशः ॥३०॥
30. pūrṇe śatasahasre tu viprāṇāṁ pariviṣyatām ,
sthāpitā tatra saṁjñābhūcchaṅkho dhmāyati nityaśaḥ.
30. pūrṇe śatasahasre tu viprāṇāṃ pariviṣyatām sthāpitā
tatra saṃjñā abhūt śaṅkhaḥ dhmāyati nityaśaḥ
30. When a full hundred thousand brahmins had been served, a signal (saṃjñā) was established there: a conch shell would constantly blow.
मुहुर्मुहुः प्रणदतस्तस्य शङ्खस्य भारत ।
उत्तमं शब्दमश्रौषं ततो रोमाणि मेऽहृषन् ॥३१॥
31. muhurmuhuḥ praṇadatastasya śaṅkhasya bhārata ,
uttamaṁ śabdamaśrauṣaṁ tato romāṇi me'hṛṣan.
31. muhurmuhuḥ praṇadataḥ tasya śaṅkhasya bhārata
uttamaṃ śabdaṃ aśrauṣaṃ tataḥ romāṇi me ahṛṣan
31. O Bhārata, I repeatedly heard the excellent sound of that resounding conch shell. Then, my body hairs (romāṇi) stood on end.
पार्थिवैर्बहुभिः कीर्णमुपस्थानं दिदृक्षुभिः ।
सर्वरत्नान्युपादाय पार्थिवा वै जनेश्वर ॥३२॥
32. pārthivairbahubhiḥ kīrṇamupasthānaṁ didṛkṣubhiḥ ,
sarvaratnānyupādāya pārthivā vai janeśvara.
32. pārthivaiḥ bahubhiḥ kīrṇam upasthānam didṛkṣubhiḥ
sarvaratnāni upādāya pārthivāḥ vai janeśvara
32. O lord of men, the assembly hall was crowded with many kings who desired to witness [the event], having brought all sorts of jewels.
यज्ञे तस्य महाराज पाण्डुपुत्रस्य धीमतः ।
वैश्या इव महीपाला द्विजातिपरिवेषकाः ॥३३॥
33. yajñe tasya mahārāja pāṇḍuputrasya dhīmataḥ ,
vaiśyā iva mahīpālā dvijātipariveṣakāḥ.
33. yajñe tasya mahārāja pāṇḍuputrasya dhīmataḥ
vaiśyāḥ iva mahīpālāḥ dvijātipariveṣakāḥ
33. O great king, at the Vedic ritual (yajña) of that wise son of Pāṇḍu, kings themselves acted like members of the merchant class (vaiśyas), serving the twice-born (dvijātis).
न सा श्रीर्देवराजस्य यमस्य वरुणस्य वा ।
गुह्यकाधिपतेर्वापि या श्री राजन्युधिष्ठिरे ॥३४॥
34. na sā śrīrdevarājasya yamasya varuṇasya vā ,
guhyakādhipatervāpi yā śrī rājanyudhiṣṭhire.
34. na sā śrīḥ devarājasya yamasya varuṇasya vā
guhyakādhipateḥ vā api yā śrīḥ rājan yudhiṣṭhire
34. O king, the splendor (śrī) that Yudhiṣṭhira possesses is not found with the king of gods, Indra, nor with Yama, nor Varuṇa, nor even with Kubera, the lord of the Guhyakas.
तां दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुपुत्रस्य श्रियं परमिकामहम् ।
शान्तिं न परिगच्छामि दह्यमानेन चेतसा ॥३५॥
35. tāṁ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍuputrasya śriyaṁ paramikāmaham ,
śāntiṁ na parigacchāmi dahyamānena cetasā.
35. tām dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍuputrasya śriyam paramikām aham
śāntim na parigacchāmi dahyamānena cetasā
35. Having witnessed that supreme splendor (śrī) of the son of Pāṇḍu, I cannot find peace, as my mind (chetas) is burning [with envy].
शकुनिरुवाच ।
यामेतामुत्तमां लक्ष्मीं दृष्टवानसि पाण्डवे ।
तस्याः प्राप्तावुपायं मे शृणु सत्यपराक्रम ॥३६॥
36. śakuniruvāca ,
yāmetāmuttamāṁ lakṣmīṁ dṛṣṭavānasi pāṇḍave ,
tasyāḥ prāptāvupāyaṁ me śṛṇu satyaparākrama.
36. śakuniḥ uvāca | yām etām uttamām lakṣmīm dṛṣṭavān asi
pāṇḍave | tasyāḥ prāptau upāyam me śṛṇu satyaparākrama
36. Śakuni said, "O Pāṇḍava, you have seen this excellent prosperity (lakṣmī). O truth-valiant one, hear from me the method to attain it."
अहमक्षेष्वभिज्ञातः पृथिव्यामपि भारत ।
हृदयज्ञः पणज्ञश्च विशेषज्ञश्च देवने ॥३७॥
37. ahamakṣeṣvabhijñātaḥ pṛthivyāmapi bhārata ,
hṛdayajñaḥ paṇajñaśca viśeṣajñaśca devane.
37. aham akṣeṣu abhijñātaḥ pṛthivyām api bhārata
| hṛdayajñaḥ paṇajñaḥ ca viśeṣajñaḥ ca devane
37. O Bhārata, I am renowned throughout the world for my skill in dice. I am an expert in gambling, knowing the opponent's mind and understanding the stakes.
द्यूतप्रियश्च कौन्तेयो न च जानाति देवितुम् ।
आहूतश्चैष्यति व्यक्तं दीव्यावेत्याह्वयस्व तम् ॥३८॥
38. dyūtapriyaśca kaunteyo na ca jānāti devitum ,
āhūtaścaiṣyati vyaktaṁ dīvyāvetyāhvayasva tam.
38. dyūtapriyaḥ ca kaunteyaḥ na ca jānāti devitum |
āhūtaḥ ca eṣyati vyaktam divyāva iti āhvayasva tam
38. The son of Kuntī (Yudhiṣṭhira) is fond of gambling but does not know how to play it. If invited, he will certainly come. Therefore, invite him by saying, 'Let us play!'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः शकुनिना राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
धृतराष्ट्रमिदं वाक्यमपदान्तरमब्रवीत् ॥३९॥
39. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ śakuninā rājā duryodhanastadā ,
dhṛtarāṣṭramidaṁ vākyamapadāntaramabravīt.
39. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca | evam uktaḥ śakuninā rājā duryodhanaḥ
tadā | dhṛtarāṣṭram idam vākyam apadāntaram abravīt
39. Vaiśaṃpāyana said, "Thus addressed by Śakuni, King Duryodhana then spoke these words directly to Dhṛtarāṣṭra."
अयमुत्सहते राजञ्श्रियमाहर्तुमक्षवित् ।
द्यूतेन पाण्डुपुत्रस्य तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥४०॥
40. ayamutsahate rājañśriyamāhartumakṣavit ,
dyūtena pāṇḍuputrasya tadanujñātumarhasi.
40. ayam utsahate rājan śriyam āhartum akṣavit
dyūtena pāṇḍuputrasya tat anujñātum arhasi
40. O King, this expert in dice is eager to acquire the wealth of Pāṇḍu's son through gambling. Therefore, you should permit this.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
क्षत्ता मन्त्री महाप्राज्ञः स्थितो यस्यास्मि शासने ।
तेन संगम्य वेत्स्यामि कार्यस्यास्य विनिश्चयम् ॥४१॥
41. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
kṣattā mantrī mahāprājñaḥ sthito yasyāsmi śāsane ,
tena saṁgamya vetsyāmi kāryasyāsya viniścayam.
41. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca kṣattā mantrī mahāprājñaḥ sthitaḥ yasya
asmi śāsane tena saṅgamya vetsyāmi kāryasya asya viniścayam
41. Dhritarashtra said: 'I will ascertain the final decision regarding this matter only after consulting with Vidura (kṣattā), the greatly wise minister, whose instruction I follow.'
स हि धर्मं पुरस्कृत्य दीर्घदर्शी परं हितम् ।
उभयोः पक्षयोर्युक्तं वक्ष्यत्यर्थविनिश्चयम् ॥४२॥
42. sa hi dharmaṁ puraskṛtya dīrghadarśī paraṁ hitam ,
ubhayoḥ pakṣayoryuktaṁ vakṣyatyarthaviniścayam.
42. sa hi dharmam puraskṛtya dīrghadarśī param hitam
ubhayoḥ pakṣayoḥ yuktam vakṣyati arthaviniścayam
42. For he (Vidura), being far-sighted and making natural law (dharma) paramount, will declare the supreme welfare (hitam) and a just decision (arthaviniścayam) that is appropriate for both parties.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
निवर्तयिष्यति त्वासौ यदि क्षत्ता समेष्यति ।
निवृत्ते त्वयि राजेन्द्र मरिष्येऽहमसंशयम् ॥४३॥
43. duryodhana uvāca ,
nivartayiṣyati tvāsau yadi kṣattā sameṣyati ,
nivṛtte tvayi rājendra mariṣye'hamasaṁśayam.
43. duryodhanaḥ uvāca nivartayiṣyati tvā asau yadi kṣattā
sameṣyati nivṛtte tvayi rājendra mariṣye aham asaṃśayam
43. Duryodhana said: 'If that Vidura (kṣattā) arrives, he will turn you away (from this proposal). And if you, O king of kings (rājendra), are deterred, I will undoubtedly die.'
स मयि त्वं मृते राजन्विदुरेण सुखी भव ।
भोक्ष्यसे पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां किं मया त्वं करिष्यसि ॥४४॥
44. sa mayi tvaṁ mṛte rājanvidureṇa sukhī bhava ,
bhokṣyase pṛthivīṁ kṛtsnāṁ kiṁ mayā tvaṁ kariṣyasi.
44. sa mayi tvam mṛte rājan vidureṇa sukhī bhava
bhokṣyase pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnām kim mayā tvam kariṣyasi
44. O King, when I am dead, may you be happy with Vidura. You will then enjoy the entire earth. What will you do with me?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
आर्तवाक्यं तु तत्तस्य प्रणयोक्तं निशम्य सः ।
धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीत्प्रेष्यान्दुर्योधनमते स्थितः ॥४५॥
45. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ārtavākyaṁ tu tattasya praṇayoktaṁ niśamya saḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro'bravītpreṣyānduryodhanamate sthitaḥ.
45. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca ārtavākyam tu tat tasya praṇayoktam
niśamya saḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ abravīt preṣyān duryodhanamate sthitaḥ
45. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard that distressed utterance of his, spoken with affection, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, being firmly aligned with Duryodhana's views, then spoke to his servants.
स्थूणासहस्रैर्बृहतीं शतद्वारां सभां मम ।
मनोरमां दर्शनीयामाशु कुर्वन्तु शिल्पिनः ॥४६॥
46. sthūṇāsahasrairbṛhatīṁ śatadvārāṁ sabhāṁ mama ,
manoramāṁ darśanīyāmāśu kurvantu śilpinaḥ.
46. sthūṇāsahasraiḥ bṛhatīm śatadvārām sabhām mama
manoramām darśanīyām āśu kurvantu śilpinaḥ
46. Let the artisans swiftly construct for me a grand, magnificent hall, adorned with a thousand pillars and a hundred gates, beautiful and delightful to behold.
ततः संस्तीर्य रत्नैस्तामक्षानावाप्य सर्वशः ।
सुकृतां सुप्रवेशां च निवेदयत मे शनैः ॥४७॥
47. tataḥ saṁstīrya ratnaistāmakṣānāvāpya sarvaśaḥ ,
sukṛtāṁ supraveśāṁ ca nivedayata me śanaiḥ.
47. tataḥ saṃstīrya ratnaiḥ tām akṣān āvāpya sarvaśaḥ
sukṛtām supraveśām ca nivedayata me śanaiḥ
47. Then, after carpeting that hall completely with jewels and scattering dice everywhere, you should report to me, when it is meticulously completed and easily accessible.
दुर्योधनस्य शान्त्यर्थमिति निश्चित्य भूमिपः ।
धृतराष्ट्रो महाराज प्राहिणोद्विदुराय वै ॥४८॥
48. duryodhanasya śāntyarthamiti niścitya bhūmipaḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahārāja prāhiṇodvidurāya vai.
48. duryodhanasya śāntyartham iti niścitya bhūmipaḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahārāja prāhiṇot vidurāya vai
48. O great king, having thus decided for the appeasement of Duryodhana, King Dhritarashtra indeed sent [a message] to Vidura.
अपृष्ट्वा विदुरं ह्यस्य नासीत्कश्चिद्विनिश्चयः ।
द्यूतदोषांश्च जानन्स पुत्रस्नेहादकृष्यत ॥४९॥
49. apṛṣṭvā viduraṁ hyasya nāsītkaścidviniścayaḥ ,
dyūtadoṣāṁśca jānansa putrasnehādakṛṣyata.
49. apṛṣṭvā viduram hi asya na āsīt kaścit viniścayaḥ
dyūtadoṣān ca jānan saḥ putrasnehāt akṛṣyata
49. Indeed, without consulting Vidura, there was no firm decision for him. And though he knew the faults of gambling, he was drawn [to it] by his affection for his son.
तच्छ्रुत्वा विदुरो धीमान्कलिद्वारमुपस्थितम् ।
विनाशमुखमुत्पन्नं धृतराष्ट्रमुपाद्रवत् ॥५०॥
50. tacchrutvā viduro dhīmānkalidvāramupasthitam ,
vināśamukhamutpannaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭramupādravat.
50. tat śrutvā viduraḥ dhīmān kalidvāram upasthitam
vināśamukham utpannam dhṛtarāṣṭram upādravat
50. Having heard that, the intelligent Vidura, realizing that the gateway to discord (kali) had appeared and destruction had manifested, rushed towards Dhritarashtra.
सोऽभिगम्य महात्मानं भ्राता भ्रातरमग्रजम् ।
मूर्ध्ना प्रणम्य चरणाविदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५१॥
51. so'bhigamya mahātmānaṁ bhrātā bhrātaramagrajam ,
mūrdhnā praṇamya caraṇāvidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
51. saḥ abhigamya mahātmānam bhrātā bhrātaram agrajam
mūrdhnā praṇamya caraṇau idam vacanam abravīt
51. He, the brother, having approached his great-souled elder brother, and having bowed down to his feet with his head, spoke this word.
नाभिनन्दामि ते राजन्व्यवसायमिमं प्रभो ।
पुत्रैर्भेदो यथा न स्याद्द्यूतहेतोस्तथा कुरु ॥५२॥
52. nābhinandāmi te rājanvyavasāyamimaṁ prabho ,
putrairbhedo yathā na syāddyūtahetostathā kuru.
52. na abhinandāmi te rājan vyavasāyam imam prabho
putraiḥ bhedaḥ yathā na syāt dyūtahetoḥ tathā kuru
52. O King, O Lord, I do not approve of this undertaking of yours. Please act in such a way that there is no division among the sons on account of gambling.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
क्षत्तः पुत्रेषु पुत्रैर्मे कलहो न भविष्यति ।
दिवि देवाः प्रसादं नः करिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥५३॥
53. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
kṣattaḥ putreṣu putrairme kalaho na bhaviṣyati ,
divi devāḥ prasādaṁ naḥ kariṣyanti na saṁśayaḥ.
53. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca kṣattaḥ putreṣu putraiḥ me kalahaḥ na
bhaviṣyati divi devāḥ prasādam naḥ kariṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ
53. Dhritarashtra said: "O Vidura, there will be no quarrel among my sons. The gods in heaven will surely bestow their favor upon us; there is no doubt about it."
अशुभं वा शुभं वापि हितं वा यदि वाहितम् ।
प्रवर्ततां सुहृद्द्यूतं दिष्टमेतन्न संशयः ॥५४॥
54. aśubhaṁ vā śubhaṁ vāpi hitaṁ vā yadi vāhitam ,
pravartatāṁ suhṛddyūtaṁ diṣṭametanna saṁśayaḥ.
54. aśubham vā śubham vā api hitam vā yadi vā ahitam
pravartatām suhṛt dyūtam diṣṭam etat na saṃśayaḥ
54. Whether inauspicious or auspicious, beneficial or harmful, let this friendly game of dice proceed. This is destined; there is no doubt about it.
मयि संनिहिते चैव भीष्मे च भरतर्षभे ।
अनयो दैवविहितो न कथंचिद्भविष्यति ॥५५॥
55. mayi saṁnihite caiva bhīṣme ca bharatarṣabhe ,
anayo daivavihito na kathaṁcidbhaviṣyati.
55. mayi saṃnihite ca eva bhīṣme ca bharatarṣabhe
anayaḥ daivavihitaḥ na kathaṃcit bhaviṣyati
55. While I am present, and indeed while Bhishma, the foremost among the Bharatas, is also present, no calamity ordained by fate will possibly occur.
गच्छ त्वं रथमास्थाय हयैर्वातसमैर्जवे ।
खाण्डवप्रस्थमद्यैव समानय युधिष्ठिरम् ॥५६॥
56. gaccha tvaṁ rathamāsthāya hayairvātasamairjave ,
khāṇḍavaprasthamadyaiva samānaya yudhiṣṭhiram.
56. gaccha tvam ratham āsthāya hayaiḥ vātasamaiḥ jave
khāṇḍavaprastham adya eva samānaya yudhiṣṭhiram
56. You go, mounted on a chariot drawn by horses swift as the wind, and bring Yudhiṣṭhira to Khāṇḍavaprastha today itself.
न वार्यो व्यवसायो मे विदुरैतद्ब्रवीमि ते ।
दैवमेव परं मन्ये येनैतदुपपद्यते ॥५७॥
57. na vāryo vyavasāyo me viduraitadbravīmi te ,
daivameva paraṁ manye yenaitadupapadyate.
57. na vāryaḥ vyavasāyaḥ me vidura etat bravīmi te
daivam eva param manye yena etat upapadyate
57. O Vidura, my resolve cannot be stopped; I tell you this. I consider destiny (daiva) to be supreme, for it is by destiny that this is coming to pass.
इत्युक्तो विदुरो धीमान्नैतदस्तीति चिन्तयन् ।
आपगेयं महाप्राज्ञमभ्यगच्छत्सुदुःखितः ॥५८॥
58. ityukto viduro dhīmānnaitadastīti cintayan ,
āpageyaṁ mahāprājñamabhyagacchatsuduḥkhitaḥ.
58. iti uktaḥ viduraḥ dhīmān na etat asti iti cintayan
āpageyam mahāprājñam abhyagacchat suduḥkhitaḥ
58. Having been told this, the wise Vidura, thinking, 'This is not right,' went to the greatly intelligent Bhīṣma (Āpageya), feeling extremely distressed.
