कृतेऽवहारे सैन्यानां प्रथमे भरतर्षभ ।
भीष्मे च युधि संरब्धे हृष्टे दुर्योधने तथा ॥१॥

kṛte'vahāre sainyānāṁ prathame bharatarṣabha ,
bhīṣme ca yudhi saṁrabdhe hṛṣṭe duryodhane tathā.

1. Sañjaya said: O best of Bharatas, when this first withdrawal of the armies was made, and Bhishma was greatly aroused in battle, and Duryodhana, in turn, rejoiced.
धर्मराजस्ततस्तूर्णमभिगम्य जनार्दनम् ।
भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वैः सर्वैश्चैव जनेश्वरैः ॥२॥
2. dharmarājastatastūrṇamabhigamya janārdanam ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ sarvaiścaiva janeśvaraiḥ.
2. dharmarājaḥ tataḥ tūrṇaṃ abhigamya janārdanam
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ sarvaiḥ ca eva janeśvaraiḥ

2. Then, King Yudhishthira (dharmarāja), accompanied by all his brothers and indeed all the other rulers of men, quickly approached Janardana (Krishna).
शुचा परमया युक्तश्चिन्तयानः पराजयम् ।
वार्ष्णेयमब्रवीद्राजन्दृष्ट्वा भीष्मस्य विक्रमम् ॥३॥
3. śucā paramayā yuktaścintayānaḥ parājayam ,
vārṣṇeyamabravīdrājandṛṣṭvā bhīṣmasya vikramam.

vārṣṇeyam abravīt rājan dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmasya vikramam

3. O King, upon witnessing Bhīṣma's prowess, (he) spoke to Kṛṣṇa (Vārṣṇeya), filled with extreme grief and contemplating defeat.
कृष्ण पश्य महेष्वासं भीष्मं भीमपराक्रमम् ।
शरैर्दहन्तं सैन्यं मे ग्रीष्मे कक्षमिवानलम् ॥४॥
4. kṛṣṇa paśya maheṣvāsaṁ bhīṣmaṁ bhīmaparākramam ,
śarairdahantaṁ sainyaṁ me grīṣme kakṣamivānalam.

śaraiḥ dahantam sainyam me grīṣme kakṣam iva analam

4. O Kṛṣṇa, behold Bhīṣma, that great archer of terrifying prowess, who is burning my army with his arrows, just as a fire consumes dry grass in summer.
कथमेनं महात्मानं शक्ष्यामः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ।
लेलिह्यमानं सैन्यं मे हविष्मन्तमिवानलम् ॥५॥
5. kathamenaṁ mahātmānaṁ śakṣyāmaḥ prativīkṣitum ,
lelihyamānaṁ sainyaṁ me haviṣmantamivānalam.
5. katham enam mahātmānam śakṣyāmaḥ prativīkṣitum
lelihyamānam sainyam me haviṣmantam iva analam
5. me sainyam haviṣmantam analam iva lelihyamānam
enam mahātmānam katham prativīkṣitum śakṣyāmaḥ
5. How will we be able to face this great soul (ātman), (Bhīṣma), who is devouring my army just as a fire devours offerings?
एतं हि पुरुषव्याघ्रं धनुष्मन्तं महाबलम् ।
दृष्ट्वा विप्रद्रुतं सैन्यं मदीयं मार्गणाहतम् ॥६॥
6. etaṁ hi puruṣavyāghraṁ dhanuṣmantaṁ mahābalam ,
dṛṣṭvā vipradrutaṁ sainyaṁ madīyaṁ mārgaṇāhatam.
6. etam hi puruṣavyāghram dhanuṣmantam mahābalam
dṛṣṭvā vipradrutam sainyam madīyam mārgaṇāhatam
6. hi etam puruṣavyāghram dhanuṣmantam mahābalam
dṛṣṭvā mārgaṇāhatam madīyam sainyam vipradrutam
6. Indeed, upon seeing this tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), (Bhīṣma), who is armed with a bow and possesses great strength, my army, struck by his arrows, has fled in disarray.
शक्यो जेतुं यमः क्रुद्धो वज्रपाणिश्च संयुगे ।
वरुणः पाशभृच्चापि कुबेरो वा गदाधरः ॥७॥
7. śakyo jetuṁ yamaḥ kruddho vajrapāṇiśca saṁyuge ,
varuṇaḥ pāśabhṛccāpi kubero vā gadādharaḥ.
7. śakyaḥ jetum yamaḥ kruddhaḥ vajrapāṇiḥ ca saṃyuge
varuṇaḥ pāśabhṛt ca api kuberaḥ vā gadādharaḥ
7. kruddhaḥ yamaḥ ca vajrapāṇiḥ ca api pāśabhṛt
varuṇaḥ vā gadādharaḥ kuberaḥ saṃyuge jetum śakyaḥ
7. Even an enraged Yama, or Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, can be conquered in battle; similarly, Varuna, the bearer of the noose, or Kubera, the mace-holder, can also be vanquished.
न तु भीष्मो महातेजाः शक्यो जेतुं महाबलः ।
सोऽहमेवं गते मग्नो भीष्मागाधजलेऽप्लवः ॥८॥
8. na tu bhīṣmo mahātejāḥ śakyo jetuṁ mahābalaḥ ,
so'hamevaṁ gate magno bhīṣmāgādhajale'plavaḥ.
8. na tu bhīṣmaḥ mahātejāḥ śakyaḥ jetum mahābalaḥ
saḥ aham evam gate magnaḥ bhīṣmāgādhajale aplavaḥ
8. tu na mahātejāḥ mahābalaḥ bhīṣmaḥ jetum śakyaḥ.
saḥ aham evam gate bhīṣmāgādhajale magnaḥ aplavaḥ
8. But the greatly glorious and immensely powerful Bhishma cannot be conquered. So, in this situation, I am submerged, without a raft, in the unfathomably deep waters of Bhishma.
आत्मनो बुद्धिदौर्बल्याद्भीष्ममासाद्य केशव ।
वनं यास्यामि गोविन्द श्रेयो मे तत्र जीवितुम् ॥९॥
9. ātmano buddhidaurbalyādbhīṣmamāsādya keśava ,
vanaṁ yāsyāmi govinda śreyo me tatra jīvitum.
9. ātmanaḥ buddhidaurbalyāt bhīṣmam āsādya keśava
vanam yāsyāmi govinda śreyaḥ me tatra jīvitum
9. keśava govinda,
ātmanaḥ buddhidaurbalyāt bhīṣmam āsādya,
vanam yāsyāmi.
me tatra jīvitum śreyaḥ
9. O Keshava, O Govinda, due to the weakness of my own intellect and resolve (buddhi), having encountered Bhishma, I shall go to the forest. It is better for me to live there.
न त्विमान्पृथिवीपालान्दातुं भीष्माय मृत्यवे ।
क्षपयिष्यति सेनां मे कृष्ण भीष्मो महास्त्रवित् ॥१०॥
10. na tvimānpṛthivīpālāndātuṁ bhīṣmāya mṛtyave ,
kṣapayiṣyati senāṁ me kṛṣṇa bhīṣmo mahāstravit.
10. na tu imān pṛthivīpālān dātum bhīṣmāya mṛtyave
kṣapayisyati senām me kṛṣṇa bhīṣmaḥ mahāstravit
10. tu na imān pṛthivīpālān bhīṣmāya mṛtyave dātum (icchāmi).
kṛṣṇa,
mahāstravit bhīṣmaḥ me senām kṣapayisyati
10. But I will not hand over these protectors of the earth to Bhishma for their death. O Krishna, Bhishma, the master of great weapons, will indeed destroy my army.
यथानलं प्रज्वलितं पतंगाः समभिद्रुताः ।
विनाशायैव गच्छन्ति तथा मे सैनिको जनः ॥११॥
11. yathānalaṁ prajvalitaṁ pataṁgāḥ samabhidrutāḥ ,
vināśāyaiva gacchanti tathā me sainiko janaḥ.
11. yathā analaṃ prajvalitaṃ pataṅgāḥ samabhidrutāḥ
vināśāya eva gacchanti tathā me sainikaḥ janaḥ
11. yathā prajvalitaṃ analaṃ pataṅgāḥ samabhidrutāḥ
vināśāya eva gacchanti tathā me sainikaḥ janaḥ
11. Just as moths, rushing towards a blazing fire, go only to their destruction, similarly, my soldiers are heading towards their end.
क्षयं नीतोऽस्मि वार्ष्णेय राज्यहेतोः पराक्रमी ।
भ्रातरश्चैव मे वीराः कर्शिताः शरपीडिताः ॥१२॥
12. kṣayaṁ nīto'smi vārṣṇeya rājyahetoḥ parākramī ,
bhrātaraścaiva me vīrāḥ karśitāḥ śarapīḍitāḥ.
12. kṣayaṃ nītaḥ asmi vārṣṇeya rājyahetoḥ parākramī
bhrātaraḥ ca eva me vīrāḥ karśitāḥ śarapīḍitāḥ
12. vārṣṇeya rājyahetoḥ kṣayaṃ nītaḥ parākramī asmi
ca eva me vīrāḥ bhrātaraḥ karśitāḥ śarapīḍitāḥ
12. O Vārṣṇeya, though I am valorous, I have been brought to ruin for the sake of the kingdom. My valiant brothers, too, are weakened and tormented by arrows.
मत्कृते भ्रातृसौहार्दाद्राज्याद्भ्रष्टास्तथा सुखात् ।
जीवितं बहु मन्येऽहं जीवितं ह्यद्य दुर्लभम् ॥१३॥
13. matkṛte bhrātṛsauhārdādrājyādbhraṣṭāstathā sukhāt ,
jīvitaṁ bahu manye'haṁ jīvitaṁ hyadya durlabham.
13. matkṛte bhrātṛsauhārdāt rājyāt bhraṣṭāḥ tathā sukhāt
jīvitaṃ bahu manye ahaṃ jīvitaṃ hi adya durlabham
13. matkṛte bhrātṛsauhārdāt rājyāt tathā sukhāt bhraṣṭāḥ
aham jīvitaṃ bahu manye hi adya jīvitaṃ durlabham
13. Because of me, due to their brotherly affection, they have fallen from their kingdom and happiness. I value my life greatly, for indeed, life (jīvitaṃ) is now difficult to preserve.
जीवितस्य हि शेषेण तपस्तप्स्यामि दुश्चरम् ।
न घातयिष्यामि रणे मित्राणीमानि केशव ॥१४॥
14. jīvitasya hi śeṣeṇa tapastapsyāmi duścaram ,
na ghātayiṣyāmi raṇe mitrāṇīmāni keśava.
14. jīvitasya hi śeṣeṇa tapaḥ tapsyāmi duścaram
na ghātayiṣyāmi raṇe mitrāṇi imāni keśava
14. hi jīvitasya śeṣeṇa duścaram tapaḥ tapsyāmi
keśava raṇe imāni mitrāṇi na ghātayiṣyāmi
14. Indeed, for the rest of my life (jīvitasya), I shall perform severe austerities (tapas). O Keśava, I will not slay these friends in battle.
रथान्मे बहुसाहस्रान्दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महाबलः ।
घातयत्यनिशं भीष्मः प्रवराणां प्रहारिणाम् ॥१५॥
15. rathānme bahusāhasrāndivyairastrairmahābalaḥ ,
ghātayatyaniśaṁ bhīṣmaḥ pravarāṇāṁ prahāriṇām.
15. rathān me bahusāhasrān divyaiḥ astraiḥ mahābalaḥ
ghātayati aniśam bhīṣmaḥ pravārāṇām prahāriṇām
15. mahābalaḥ bhīṣmaḥ pravārāṇām prahāriṇām divyaiḥ astraiḥ me bahusāhasrān rathān aniśam ghātayati.
15. Bhishma, the exceptionally mighty one, constantly destroys thousands of my chariots with divine weapons. He is among the foremost of those who strike.
किं नु कृत्वा कृतं मे स्याद्ब्रूहि माधव माचिरम् ।
मध्यस्थमिव पश्यामि समरे सव्यसाचिनम् ॥१६॥
16. kiṁ nu kṛtvā kṛtaṁ me syādbrūhi mādhava māciram ,
madhyasthamiva paśyāmi samare savyasācinam.
16. kim nu kṛtvā kṛtam me syāt brūhi mādhava mā aciram
madhyastham iva paśyāmi samare savyasācinam
16. mādhava,
mā aciram brūhi: kim nu kṛtvā me kṛtam syāt? samare savyasācinam madhyastham iva paśyāmi.
16. O Madhava, tell me quickly what action I should take to achieve a favorable outcome. I see Arjuna (Savyasachin) as if neutral in this battle.
एको भीमः परं शक्त्या युध्यत्येष महाभुजः ।
केवलं बाहुवीर्येण क्षत्रधर्ममनुस्मरन् ॥१७॥
17. eko bhīmaḥ paraṁ śaktyā yudhyatyeṣa mahābhujaḥ ,
kevalaṁ bāhuvīryeṇa kṣatradharmamanusmaran.
17. ekaḥ bhīmaḥ param śaktyā yudhyati eṣa mahābhujaḥ
kevalam bāhuvīryeṇa kṣatradharmam anusmaran
17. eṣaḥ mahābhujaḥ ekaḥ bhīmaḥ param śaktyā yudhyati.
kṣatradharmam anusmaran kevalam bāhuvīryeṇa [yudhyati].
17. This mighty-armed Bhima alone fights with supreme strength. He remembers the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior and fights solely with the might of his arms.
गदया वीरघातिन्या यथोत्साहं महामनाः ।
करोत्यसुकरं कर्म गजाश्वरथपत्तिषु ॥१८॥
18. gadayā vīraghātinyā yathotsāhaṁ mahāmanāḥ ,
karotyasukaraṁ karma gajāśvarathapattiṣu.
18. gadayā vīraghātinyā yathā utsāham mahāmanāḥ
karoti asukaram karma gaja aśva ratha pattiṣu
18. mahāmanāḥ [bhīmaḥ] vīraghātinyā gadayā yathā utsāham gaja aśva ratha pattiṣu asukaram karma karoti.
18. The great-minded Bhima, with his hero-slaying mace, performs an impossible feat with great vigor amidst the elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers.
नालमेष क्षयं कर्तुं परसैन्यस्य मारिष ।
आर्जवेनैव युद्धेन वीर वर्षशतैरपि ॥१९॥
19. nālameṣa kṣayaṁ kartuṁ parasainyasya māriṣa ,
ārjavenaiva yuddhena vīra varṣaśatairapi.
19. na alam eṣa kṣayam kartum parasainyasya māriṣa
ārjavena eva yuddhena vīra varṣaśataiḥ api
19. māriṣa vīra,
eṣa आर्जवेन एव युद्धेन परसैन्यस्य क्षयं कर्तुम् वर्षशतैः अपि न अलम्।
19. O respectable one (māriṣa), even with hundreds of years of straightforward battle, this hero (Arjuna) is not capable of destroying the enemy army, O hero.
एकोऽस्त्रवित्सखा तेऽयं सोऽप्यस्मान्समुपेक्षते ।
निर्दह्यमानान्भीष्मेण द्रोणेन च महात्मना ॥२०॥
20. eko'stravitsakhā te'yaṁ so'pyasmānsamupekṣate ,
nirdahyamānānbhīṣmeṇa droṇena ca mahātmanā.
20. ekaḥ astravit sakhā te ayam saḥ api asmān samupekṣate
nirdahyamānān bhīṣmeṇa droṇena ca mahātmanā
20. te ayam ekaḥ astravit sakhā,
saḥ api bhīṣmeṇa ca mahātmanā droṇena निर्दह्यमानान् asmān samupekṣate।
20. Your (Arjuna's) sole friend, this master of arms (astravit) (Krishna), he too is neglecting us (the Pandavas) as we are being consumed by Bhishma and the great-souled Drona.
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि भीष्मस्य द्रोणस्य च महात्मनः ।
धक्ष्यन्ति क्षत्रियान्सर्वान्प्रयुक्तानि पुनः पुनः ॥२१॥
21. divyānyastrāṇi bhīṣmasya droṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ ,
dhakṣyanti kṣatriyānsarvānprayuktāni punaḥ punaḥ.
21. divyāni astrāṇi bhīṣmasya droṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ
dhakṣyanti kṣatriyān sarvān prayuktāni punaḥ punaḥ
21. bhīṣmasya ca mahātmanaḥ droṇasya divyāni astrāṇi prayuktāni punaḥ punaḥ sarvān kṣatriyān dhakṣyanti।
21. The divine weapons (astrāṇi) of Bhishma and of the great-souled Drona, when deployed repeatedly, will consume all the kshatriyas.
कृष्ण भीष्मः सुसंरब्धः सहितः सर्वपार्थिवैः ।
क्षपयिष्यति नो नूनं यादृशोऽस्य पराक्रमः ॥२२॥
22. kṛṣṇa bhīṣmaḥ susaṁrabdhaḥ sahitaḥ sarvapārthivaiḥ ,
kṣapayiṣyati no nūnaṁ yādṛśo'sya parākramaḥ.
22. kṛṣṇa bhīṣmaḥ susaṃrabdhaḥ sahitaḥ sarvapārthivaiḥ
kṣapayişyati naḥ nūnam yādṛśaḥ asya parākramaḥ
22. kṛṣṇa! susaṃrabdhaḥ sarvapārthivaiḥ sahitaḥ bhīṣmaḥ asya parākramaḥ yādṛśaḥ,
nūnam naḥ kṣapayişyati।
22. O Krishna! Bhishma, greatly enraged and accompanied by all the kings, will surely destroy them (the Pandavas), for such is his (Bhishma's) valor (parākrama).
स त्वं पश्य महेष्वासं योगीष्वर महारथम् ।
यो भीष्मं शमयेत्संख्ये दावाग्निं जलदो यथा ॥२३॥
23. sa tvaṁ paśya maheṣvāsaṁ yogīṣvara mahāratham ,
yo bhīṣmaṁ śamayetsaṁkhye dāvāgniṁ jalado yathā.
23. sa tvam paśya maheṣvāsam yogīśvara mahāratham yaḥ
bhīṣmam śamayet saṃkhye dāvāgnim jaladaḥ yathā
23. yogīśvara tvam saḥ maheṣvāsam mahāratham paśya
yaḥ saṃkhye bhīṣmam śamayet yathā jaladaḥ dāvāgnim
23. You, O master of yoga (yogīśvara), behold that great archer (maheṣvāsa) and mighty warrior (mahāratha) who can pacify Bhishma in battle, just as a cloud (jalada) extinguishes a forest fire (dāvāgni).
तव प्रसादाद्गोविन्द पाण्डवा निहतद्विषः ।
स्वराज्यमनुसंप्राप्ता मोदिष्यन्ति सबान्धवाः ॥२४॥
24. tava prasādādgovinda pāṇḍavā nihatadviṣaḥ ,
svarājyamanusaṁprāptā modiṣyanti sabāndhavāḥ.
24. tava prasādāt govinda pāṇḍavāḥ nihata-dviṣaḥ
svarājyam anusaṃprāptāḥ modiṣyanti sabāndhavāḥ
24. govinda tava prasādāt nihata-dviṣaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ
sabāndhavāḥ svarājyam anusaṃprāptāḥ modiṣyanti
24. By your grace, O Govinda, the Pandavas, having slain their enemies and having recovered their own kingdom, will rejoice along with their kinsmen.
एवमुक्त्वा ततः पार्थो ध्यायन्नास्ते महामनाः ।
चिरमन्तर्मना भूत्वा शोकोपहतचेतनः ॥२५॥
25. evamuktvā tataḥ pārtho dhyāyannāste mahāmanāḥ ,
ciramantarmanā bhūtvā śokopahatacetanaḥ.
25. evam uktvā tataḥ pārthaḥ dhyāyan āste mahāmanāḥ
ciram antarmanaḥ bhūtvā śoka-upahata-cetanaḥ
25. evam uktvā tataḥ mahāmanāḥ pārthaḥ dhyāyan āste
ciram antarmanaḥ bhūtvā śokopahatacetanaḥ (āste)
25. Having spoken thus, Partha (Arjuna), the great-souled one (mahāmanāḥ), sat meditating (dhyāna) for a long time, his mind absorbed and his consciousness overwhelmed by sorrow (śoka).
शोकार्तं पाण्डवं ज्ञात्वा दुःखेन हतचेतसम् ।
अब्रवीत्तत्र गोविन्दो हर्षयन्सर्वपाण्डवान् ॥२६॥
26. śokārtaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ jñātvā duḥkhena hatacetasam ,
abravīttatra govindo harṣayansarvapāṇḍavān.
26. śoka-ārttam pāṇḍavam jñātvā duḥkhena hata-cetasam
abravīt tatra govindaḥ harṣayan sarva-pāṇḍavān
26. tatra govindaḥ śokārttam duḥkhena hatacetasam
pāṇḍavam jñātvā sarvapāṇḍavān harṣayan abravīt
26. Having understood the Pandava (Arjuna) to be distressed by sorrow (śoka) and confused by grief, Govinda then spoke there, gladdening all the Pandavas.
मा शुचो भरतश्रेष्ठ न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ।
यस्य ते भ्रातरः शूराः सर्वलोकस्य धन्विनः ॥२७॥
27. mā śuco bharataśreṣṭha na tvaṁ śocitumarhasi ,
yasya te bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ sarvalokasya dhanvinaḥ.
27. mā śucaḥ bharataśreṣṭha na tvam śocitum arhasi
yasya te bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ sarvalokasya dhanvinaḥ
27. bharataśreṣṭha mā śucaḥ,
tvam śocitum na arhasi,
yasya te śūrāḥ dhanvinaḥ bhrātaraḥ sarvalokasya (santi).
27. O best among the Bharatas, do not grieve; you are not fit to grieve, for your brothers are valiant archers (dhanvin), famous throughout the world.
अहं च प्रियकृद्राजन्सात्यकिश्च महारथः ।
विराटद्रुपदौ वृद्धौ धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ॥२८॥
28. ahaṁ ca priyakṛdrājansātyakiśca mahārathaḥ ,
virāṭadrupadau vṛddhau dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ.
28. aham ca priyakṛt rājan sātyakiḥ ca mahārathaḥ
virāṭadrupadau vṛddhau dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca pārṣataḥ
28. rājan,
aham ca priyakṛt,
sātyakiḥ ca mahārathaḥ,
vṛddhau virāṭadrupadau ca,
pārṣataḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca (atra santi).
28. And I (am here), your well-wisher, O King, as is Sātyaki, a great charioteer (mahāratha). Virāṭa and Drupada, both aged, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Drupada (Pārṣata), are also present.
तथैव सबलाः सर्वे राजानो राजसत्तम ।
त्वत्प्रसादं प्रतीक्षन्ते त्वद्भक्ताश्च विशां पते ॥२९॥
29. tathaiva sabalāḥ sarve rājāno rājasattama ,

29. Likewise, O best of kings (rājasattama), all these kings with their armies, and your devotees (bhakta), O lord of men (viśāṃ pate), await your favor.
एष ते पार्षतो नित्यं हितकामः प्रिये रतः ।
सेनापत्यमनुप्राप्तो धृष्टद्युम्नो महाबलः ।
शिखण्डी च महाबाहो भीष्मस्य निधनं किल ॥३०॥
30. eṣa te pārṣato nityaṁ hitakāmaḥ priye rataḥ ,
senāpatyamanuprāpto dhṛṣṭadyumno mahābalaḥ ,
śikhaṇḍī ca mahābāho bhīṣmasya nidhanaṁ kila.

30. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), this Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Drupada (Pārṣata), who is ever desirous of your welfare and devoted to what is pleasing to you, has obtained the generalship (senāpatya). And Śikhaṇḍī is indeed for the destruction of Bhīṣma.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा ततो राजा धृष्टद्युम्नं महारथम् ।
अब्रवीत्समितौ तस्यां वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः ॥३१॥

31. Then, having heard this, the king spoke to Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the great charioteer, in that assembly, as Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) listened.
धृष्टद्युम्न निबोधेदं यत्त्वा वक्ष्यामि मारिष ।
नातिक्रम्यं भवेत्तच्च वचनं मम भाषितम् ॥३२॥
32. dhṛṣṭadyumna nibodhedaṁ yattvā vakṣyāmi māriṣa ,
nātikramyaṁ bhavettacca vacanaṁ mama bhāṣitam.

32. O venerable Dhṛṣṭadyumna, listen to what I am about to tell you. And that word spoken by me must not be violated.
भवान्सेनापतिर्मह्यं वासुदेवेन संमतः ।
कार्त्तिकेयो यथा नित्यं देवानामभवत्पुरा ।
तथा त्वमपि पाण्डूनां सेनानीः पुरुषर्षभ ॥३३॥
33. bhavānsenāpatirmahyaṁ vāsudevena saṁmataḥ ,
kārttikeyo yathā nityaṁ devānāmabhavatpurā ,
tathā tvamapi pāṇḍūnāṁ senānīḥ puruṣarṣabha.

33. You are approved by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) to be my commander-in-chief. Just as Kārttikeya was always the commander of the gods in ancient times, so too are you, O best among men, the commander for the Pāṇḍavas.
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल विक्रम्य जहि कौरवान् ।
अहं च त्वानुयास्यामि भीमः कृष्णश्च मारिष ॥३४॥
34. sa tvaṁ puruṣaśārdūla vikramya jahi kauravān ,
ahaṁ ca tvānuyāsyāmi bhīmaḥ kṛṣṇaśca māriṣa.

34. Therefore, O tiger among men, attack and destroy the Kauravas! And I, Bhīma, and Kṛṣṇa will follow you, O venerable one.
माद्रीपुत्रौ च सहितौ द्रौपदेयाश्च दंशिताः ।
ये चान्ये पृथिवीपालाः प्रधानाः पुरुषर्षभ ॥३५॥

35. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), the two sons of Mādrī and the sons of Draupadī are also present, fully armored, along with other prominent kings.
तत उद्धर्षयन्सर्वान्धृष्टद्युम्नोऽभ्यभाषत ।
अहं द्रोणान्तकः पार्थ विहितः शंभुना पुरा ॥३६॥
36. tata uddharṣayansarvāndhṛṣṭadyumno'bhyabhāṣata ,
ahaṁ droṇāntakaḥ pārtha vihitaḥ śaṁbhunā purā.

36. Then, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, exhilarating all [the warriors], spoke: 'O son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), I was designated by Śambhu (Śaṃbhu) long ago as the slayer of Droṇa.'
रणे भीष्मं तथा द्रोणं कृपं शल्यं जयद्रथम् ।
सर्वानद्य रणे दृप्तान्प्रतियोत्स्यामि पार्थिव ॥३७॥
37. raṇe bhīṣmaṁ tathā droṇaṁ kṛpaṁ śalyaṁ jayadratham ,
sarvānadya raṇe dṛptānpratiyotsyāmi pārthiva.

37. O King (pārthiva), today in battle, I will confront all these arrogant ones: Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Śalya, and Jayadratha.
अथोत्क्रुष्टं महेष्वासैः पाण्डवैर्युद्धदुर्मदैः ।
समुद्यते पार्थिवेन्द्रे पार्षते शत्रुसूदने ॥३८॥
38. athotkruṣṭaṁ maheṣvāsaiḥ pāṇḍavairyuddhadurmadaiḥ ,
samudyate pārthivendre pārṣate śatrusūdane.

38. Then a loud cry was raised by the Pāṇḍavas – the great archers, those formidable in battle – as Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pṛṣata (Pārṣata), the chief among kings, the annihilator of foes, stood ready [for battle].
तमब्रवीत्ततः पार्थः पार्षतं पृतनापतिम् ।
व्यूहः क्रौञ्चारुणो नाम सर्वशत्रुनिबर्हणः ॥३९॥
39. tamabravīttataḥ pārthaḥ pārṣataṁ pṛtanāpatim ,
vyūhaḥ krauñcāruṇo nāma sarvaśatrunibarhaṇaḥ.

39. Then Arjuna (pārtha) spoke to Dhṛṣṭadyumna (pārṣata), the commander of the army, concerning the formation named Krauñcāruṇa, which is capable of destroying all enemies.
यं बृहस्पतिरिन्द्राय तदा देवासुरेऽब्रवीत् ।
तं यथावत्प्रतिव्यूह परानीकविनाशनम् ।
अदृष्टपूर्वं राजानः पश्यन्तु कुरुभिः सह ॥४०॥
40. yaṁ bṛhaspatirindrāya tadā devāsure'bravīt ,
taṁ yathāvatprativyūha parānīkavināśanam ,
adṛṣṭapūrvaṁ rājānaḥ paśyantu kurubhiḥ saha.

40. Arjuna continued: 'Array that formation, the destroyer of enemy armies, precisely as Bṛhaspati once instructed Indra during the war between the gods and asuras. Let the kings, along with the Kurus, witness this formation never seen before.'
तथोक्तः स नृदेवेन विष्णुर्वज्रभृता इव ।
प्रभाते सर्वसैन्यानामग्रे चक्रे धनंजयम् ॥४१॥
41. tathoktaḥ sa nṛdevena viṣṇurvajrabhṛtā iva ,
prabhāte sarvasainyānāmagre cakre dhanaṁjayam.

41. Thus addressed by Arjuna, the lord of men, as Viṣṇu might be by the thunderbolt-wielder (Indra), Dhṛṣṭadyumna, in the morning, placed Arjuna (dhanañjaya) at the head of all the armies.
आदित्यपथगः केतुस्तस्याद्भुतमनोरमः ।
शासनात्पुरुहूतस्य निर्मितो विश्वकर्मणा ॥४२॥
42. ādityapathagaḥ ketustasyādbhutamanoramaḥ ,
śāsanātpuruhūtasya nirmito viśvakarmaṇā.

42. Arjuna's banner (ketu) was wonderfully charming and flew high in the sun's path. It was fashioned by Viśvakarmā at the command of Indra (puruhūta).
इन्द्रायुधसवर्णाभिः पताकाभिरलंकृतः ।
आकाशग इवाकाशे गन्धर्वनगरोपमः ।
नृत्यमान इवाभाति रथचर्यासु मारिष ॥४३॥
43. indrāyudhasavarṇābhiḥ patākābhiralaṁkṛtaḥ ,
ākāśaga ivākāśe gandharvanagaropamaḥ ,
nṛtyamāna ivābhāti rathacaryāsu māriṣa.

43. O venerable one, (the chariot,) adorned with banners having the colors of a rainbow, shines in the sky as if it were moving through the air, resembling a city of Gandharvas, and appears to be dancing during its maneuvers.
तेन रत्नवता पार्थः स च गाण्डीवधन्वना ।
बभूव परमोपेतः स्वयंभूरिव भानुना ॥४४॥
44. tena ratnavatā pārthaḥ sa ca gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ,
babhūva paramopetaḥ svayaṁbhūriva bhānunā.

44. Arjuna (Pārtha) was supremely graced by that magnificent, jewel-laden (chariot), and it (the chariot) was likewise graced by him, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, just as the self-existent (svayambhū) is by the sun.
शिरोऽभूद्द्रुपदो राजा महत्या सेनया वृतः ।
कुन्तिभोजश्च चैद्यश्च चक्षुष्यास्तां जनेश्वर ॥४५॥
45. śiro'bhūddrupado rājā mahatyā senayā vṛtaḥ ,
kuntibhojaśca caidyaśca cakṣuṣyāstāṁ janeśvara.

45. O lord of men (janeśvara), King Drupada, accompanied by a great army, became the head (of the formation); and Kuntibhoja and the king of Cedi were the two eyes.
दाशार्णकाः प्रयागाश्च दाशेरकगणैः सह ।
अनूपगाः किराताश्च ग्रीवायां भरतर्षभ ॥४६॥
46. dāśārṇakāḥ prayāgāśca dāśerakagaṇaiḥ saha ,
anūpagāḥ kirātāśca grīvāyāṁ bharatarṣabha.

46. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), the Daśārṇakas and the Prayāgas, along with groups of Daśerakas, and the Anūpagas and Kirātas were positioned in the neck (region of the army formation).
पटच्चरैश्च हुण्डैश्च राजन्पौरवकैस्तथा ।
निषादैः सहितश्चापि पृष्ठमासीद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥४७॥
47. paṭaccaraiśca huṇḍaiśca rājanpauravakaistathā ,
niṣādaiḥ sahitaścāpi pṛṣṭhamāsīdyudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

47. O King, Yudhiṣṭhira was positioned at the rear, accompanied by the Paṭaccaras, the Huṇḍas, the Pauravakas, and also the Niṣādas.
पक्षौ तु भीमसेनश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ।
द्रौपदेयाभिमन्युश्च सात्यकिश्च महारथः ॥४८॥
48. pakṣau tu bhīmasenaśca dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ ,

48. Indeed, on the two flanks were Bhīmasena and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pṛṣata; and the sons of Draupadī, Abhimanyu, and Sātyaki, the great charioteer.
पिशाचा दरदाश्चैव पुण्ड्राः कुण्डीविषैः सह ।
मडका लडकाश्चैव तङ्गणाः परतङ्गणाः ॥४९॥
49. piśācā daradāścaiva puṇḍrāḥ kuṇḍīviṣaiḥ saha ,
maḍakā laḍakāścaiva taṅgaṇāḥ parataṅgaṇāḥ.

49. The Piśācas and Daradas, as well as the Puṇḍras with the Kuṇḍīviṣas, were present. Also, the Maḍakas, Laḍakas, Taṅgaṇas, and Parataṅgaṇas.
बाह्लिकास्तित्तिराश्चैव चोलाः पाण्ड्याश्च भारत ।
एते जनपदा राजन्दक्षिणं पक्षमाश्रिताः ॥५०॥
50. bāhlikāstittirāścaiva colāḥ pāṇḍyāśca bhārata ,
ete janapadā rājandakṣiṇaṁ pakṣamāśritāḥ.

50. O Bhārata, O King, these peoples, the Bāhlikas, Tittiras, Colas, and Pāṇḍyas, occupied the southern flank.
अग्निवेष्या जगत्तुण्डाः पलदाशाश्च भारत ।
शबरास्तुम्बुपाश्चैव वत्साश्च सह नाकुलैः ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च वामं पार्श्वं समाश्रिताः ॥५१॥
51. agniveṣyā jagattuṇḍāḥ paladāśāśca bhārata ,
śabarāstumbupāścaiva vatsāśca saha nākulaiḥ ,
nakulaḥ sahadevaśca vāmaṁ pārśvaṁ samāśritāḥ.

51. O Bhārata, the Agnivēṣyas, Jagattuṇḍas, and Paladāśas, along with the Śabaras, Tumbupas, Vatsas, and Nakula's forces, occupied the left flank. Nakula and Sahadeva also took their positions on the left side.
रथानामयुतं पक्षौ शिरश्च नियुतं तथा ।
पृष्ठमर्बुदमेवासीत्सहस्राणि च विंशतिः ।
ग्रीवायां नियुतं चापि सहस्राणि च सप्ततिः ॥५२॥
52. rathānāmayutaṁ pakṣau śiraśca niyutaṁ tathā ,
pṛṣṭhamarbudamevāsītsahasrāṇi ca viṁśatiḥ ,
grīvāyāṁ niyutaṁ cāpi sahasrāṇi ca saptatiḥ.

52. The two wings (of the formation) had ten thousand chariots, and the head likewise had one hundred thousand. The back indeed comprised one hundred million and twenty thousand (chariots). In the neck, there were also one hundred seventy thousand (chariots).

53. O King, at the outermost edges of the main wings and secondary wings, and at the very ends of the wings, the elephants advanced, surrounded, appearing like moving mountains.
जघनं पालयामास विराटः सह केकयैः ।
काशिराजश्च शैब्यश्च रथानामयुतैस्त्रिभिः ॥५४॥
54. jaghanaṁ pālayāmāsa virāṭaḥ saha kekayaiḥ ,
kāśirājaśca śaibyaśca rathānāmayutaistribhiḥ.

54. Virāṭa, along with the Kekayas, guarded the rear (of the army). The King of Kāśi and Śaibya also (guarded it) with thirty thousand chariots.
एवमेतं महाव्यूहं व्यूह्य भारत पाण्डवाः ।
सूर्योदयनमिच्छन्तः स्थिता युद्धाय दंशिताः ॥५५॥
55. evametaṁ mahāvyūhaṁ vyūhya bhārata pāṇḍavāḥ ,
sūryodayanamicchantaḥ sthitā yuddhāya daṁśitāḥ.

sūryodayanam icchantaḥ sthitāḥ yuddhāya daṃśitāḥ

55. O Bhārata, having arrayed this mighty formation, the Pāṇḍavas, desiring the sunrise, stood fully armed and prepared for battle.

श्वेतच्छत्राण्यशोभन्त वारणेषु रथेषु च ॥५६॥

56. Their white umbrellas, radiant as the sun, spotless, and grand, gleamed brightly on their elephants and chariots.
