वैशंपायन उवाच ।
देवराजमनुप्राप्तं ब्राह्मणच्छद्मना वृषः ।
दृष्ट्वा स्वागतमित्याह न बुबोधास्य मानसम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
devarājamanuprāptaṁ brāhmaṇacchadmanā vṛṣaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā svāgatamityāha na bubodhāsya mānasam.

vṛṣaḥ dṛṣṭvā svāgatam iti āha na bubodha asya mānasam
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Vṛṣa (Karna), having seen the king of gods (Indra) who had arrived in the disguise of a Brahmin, greeted him saying 'Welcome', but did not understand his (Indra's) intention.
हिरण्यकण्ठीः प्रमदा ग्रामान्वा बहुगोकुलान् ।
किं ददानीति तं विप्रमुवाचाधिरथिस्ततः ॥२॥
2. hiraṇyakaṇṭhīḥ pramadā grāmānvā bahugokulān ,
kiṁ dadānīti taṁ vipramuvācādhirathistataḥ.
2. hiraṇyakaṇṭhīḥ pramadāḥ grāmān vā bahu-gokulān
kim dadāni iti tam vipram uvāca adhirathiḥ tataḥ
2. Then Adhirathi (Karna) asked that Brahmin, saying, 'What shall I give? [Do you desire] women adorned with golden necklaces, or villages rich in cattle?'
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
हिरण्यकण्ठ्यः प्रमदा यच्चान्यत्प्रीतिवर्धनम् ।
नाहं दत्तमिहेच्छामि तदर्थिभ्यः प्रदीयताम् ॥३॥
3. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
hiraṇyakaṇṭhyaḥ pramadā yaccānyatprītivardhanam ,
nāhaṁ dattamihecchāmi tadarthibhyaḥ pradīyatām.
3. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca | hiraṇyakaṇṭhyaḥ
pramadā yat ca anyat prītivardhanam
| na aham dattam iha
icchāmi tat arthibhyaḥ pradīyatām
3. The Brahmin said: "I do not desire these women adorned with golden necklaces, nor any other pleasure-enhancing gifts that have been presented here. Let those be given to the seekers."
यदेतत्सहजं वर्म कुण्डले च तवानघ ।
एतदुत्कृत्य मे देहि यदि सत्यव्रतो भवान् ॥४॥
4. yadetatsahajaṁ varma kuṇḍale ca tavānagha ,
etadutkṛtya me dehi yadi satyavrato bhavān.
4. yat etat sahajaṃ varma kuṇḍale ca tava anagha
| etat utkṛtya me dehi yadi satyavrataḥ bhavān
4. O sinless one, if you are true to your vows, cut off and give me that innate armor and your ear-rings.
एतदिच्छाम्यहं क्षिप्रं त्वया दत्तं परंतप ।
एष मे सर्वलाभानां लाभः परमको मतः ॥५॥
5. etadicchāmyahaṁ kṣipraṁ tvayā dattaṁ paraṁtapa ,
eṣa me sarvalābhānāṁ lābhaḥ paramako mataḥ.
5. etat icchāmi aham kṣipraṃ tvayā dattam parantapa
| eṣaḥ me sarvalābhānāṃ lābhaḥ paramakaḥ mataḥ
5. O scorcher of foes, I quickly desire this gift from you. This is considered by me the supreme gain among all gains.
कर्ण उवाच ।
अवनिं प्रमदा गाश्च निर्वापं बहुवार्षिकम् ।
तत्ते विप्र प्रदास्यामि न तु वर्म न कुण्डले ॥६॥
6. karṇa uvāca ,
avaniṁ pramadā gāśca nirvāpaṁ bahuvārṣikam ,
tatte vipra pradāsyāmi na tu varma na kuṇḍale.
6. karṇaḥ uvāca | avaniṃ pramadāḥ gāḥ ca nirvāpaṃ bahuvārṣikam
| tat te vipra pradāsyāmi na tu varma na kuṇḍale
6. Karna said: "O Brahmin, I will give you land, women, cows, and a multi-year stipend, but neither the armor nor the ear-rings."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं बहुविधैर्वाक्यैर्याच्यमानः स तु द्विजः ।
कर्णेन भरतश्रेष्ठ नान्यं वरमयाचत ॥७॥
7. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ bahuvidhairvākyairyācyamānaḥ sa tu dvijaḥ ,
karṇena bharataśreṣṭha nānyaṁ varamayācata.
7. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | evam bahuvidhaiḥ vākyaiḥ yācyamānaḥ saḥ
tu dvijaḥ | karṇena bharataśreṣṭha na anyam varam ayācata
7. Vaiśampāyana spoke: O best of Bharatas, even though he was being implored by Karṇa with many sorts of words, that brahmin (dvija) did not ask for any other boon.
सान्त्वितश्च यथाशक्ति पूजितश्च यथाविधि ।
नैवान्यं स द्विजश्रेष्ठः कामयामास वै वरम् ॥८॥
8. sāntvitaśca yathāśakti pūjitaśca yathāvidhi ,
naivānyaṁ sa dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ kāmayāmāsa vai varam.
8. sāntvitaḥ ca yathāśakti pūjitaḥ ca yathāvidhi | na
eva anyam saḥ dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ kāmayāmāsa vai varam
8. And comforted to the best of his ability, and honored according to the prescribed rites, that excellent brahmin (dvijaśreṣṭha) truly did not desire any other boon.
यदा नान्यं प्रवृणुते वरं वै द्विजसत्तमः ।
तदैनमब्रवीद्भूयो राधेयः प्रहसन्निव ॥९॥
9. yadā nānyaṁ pravṛṇute varaṁ vai dvijasattamaḥ ,
tadainamabravīdbhūyo rādheyaḥ prahasanniva.
9. yadā na anyam pravṛṇute varam vai dvijasattamaḥ
| tadā enam abravīt bhūyaḥ rādheyaḥ prahasan iva
9. When that excellent brahmin (dvijasattama) truly did not choose any other boon, then Karṇa (Rādheya) spoke to him again, as if smiling.
सहजं वर्म मे विप्र कुण्डले चामृतोद्भवे ।
तेनावध्योऽस्मि लोकेषु ततो नैतद्ददाम्यहम् ॥१०॥
10. sahajaṁ varma me vipra kuṇḍale cāmṛtodbhave ,
tenāvadhyo'smi lokeṣu tato naitaddadāmyaham.
10. sahajam varma me vipra kuṇḍale ca amṛtodbhave |
tena avadhyaḥ asmi lokeṣu tataḥ na etat dadāmi aham
10. O brahmin (vipra), my innate armor and the earrings, born of ambrosia, make me unkillable in all the worlds. Therefore, I will not give them.
विशालं पृथिवीराज्यं क्षेमं निहतकण्टकम् ।
प्रतिगृह्णीष्व मत्तस्त्वं साधु ब्राह्मणपुंगव ॥११॥
11. viśālaṁ pṛthivīrājyaṁ kṣemaṁ nihatakaṇṭakam ,
pratigṛhṇīṣva mattastvaṁ sādhu brāhmaṇapuṁgava.
11. viśālam pṛthivīrājyam kṣemam nihatakaṇṭakam
pratigṛhṇīṣva mattaḥ tvam sādhu brāhmaṇapuṅgava
11. O foremost among Brahmins, please accept from me this vast, secure, and unhindered earthly kingdom.
कुण्डलाभ्यां विमुक्तोऽहं वर्मणा सहजेन च ।
गमनीयो भविष्यामि शत्रूणां द्विजसत्तम ॥१२॥
12. kuṇḍalābhyāṁ vimukto'haṁ varmaṇā sahajena ca ,
gamanīyo bhaviṣyāmi śatrūṇāṁ dvijasattama.
12. kuṇḍalābhyām vimuktaḥ aham varmaṇā sahajena
ca gamanīyaḥ bhaviṣyāmi śatrūṇām dvijasattama
12. Having been freed from the two earrings and the innate armor, I shall become vulnerable to my enemies, O best among Brahmins.
यदा नान्यं वरं वव्रे भगवान्पाकशासनः ।
ततः प्रहस्य कर्णस्तं पुनरित्यब्रवीद्वचः ॥१३॥
13. yadā nānyaṁ varaṁ vavre bhagavānpākaśāsanaḥ ,
tataḥ prahasya karṇastaṁ punarityabravīdvacaḥ.
13. yadā na anyam varam vavre bhagavān pākaśāsanaḥ
tataḥ prahasya karṇaḥ tam punaḥ iti abravīt vacaḥ
13. When the glorious Indra chose no other boon, then Karṇa, smiling, spoke these words to him again.
विदितो देवदेवेश प्रागेवासि मम प्रभो ।
न तु न्याय्यं मया दातुं तव शक्र वृथा वरम् ॥१४॥
14. vidito devadeveśa prāgevāsi mama prabho ,
na tu nyāyyaṁ mayā dātuṁ tava śakra vṛthā varam.
14. viditaḥ devadeveśa prāk eva asi mama prabho na
tu nyāyyam mayā dātum tava śakra vṛthā varam
14. O Lord of lords, O my Lord, you are indeed known to me from before. But it is not proper for me to give you a boon in vain, O Indra.
त्वं हि देवेश्वरः साक्षात्त्वया देयो वरो मम ।
अन्येषां चैव भूतानामीश्वरो ह्यसि भूतकृत् ॥१५॥
15. tvaṁ hi deveśvaraḥ sākṣāttvayā deyo varo mama ,
anyeṣāṁ caiva bhūtānāmīśvaro hyasi bhūtakṛt.
15. tvam hi deveśvaraḥ sākṣāt tvayā deyaḥ varaḥ mama
anyeṣām ca eva bhūtānām īśvaraḥ hi asi bhūtakṛt
15. Indeed, you are the manifest lord of the gods. A boon should be granted by you to me. You are truly the lord (īśvara) and creator of other beings (bhūta) as well.
यदि दास्यामि ते देव कुण्डले कवचं तथा ।
वध्यतामुपयास्यामि त्वं च शक्रावहास्यताम् ॥१६॥
16. yadi dāsyāmi te deva kuṇḍale kavacaṁ tathā ,
vadhyatāmupayāsyāmi tvaṁ ca śakrāvahāsyatām.
16. yadi dāsyāmi te deva kuṇḍale kavacam tathā
vadhyatām upayāsyāmi tvam ca śakra avahāsyatām
16. O god, if I give you the earrings and also the armor, I will become vulnerable to death, and you, O Śakra, will become an object of ridicule.
तस्माद्विनिमयं कृत्वा कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम् ।
हरस्व शक्र कामं मे न दद्यामहमन्यथा ॥१७॥
17. tasmādvinimayaṁ kṛtvā kuṇḍale varma cottamam ,
harasva śakra kāmaṁ me na dadyāmahamanyathā.
17. tasmāt vinimayam kṛtvā kuṇḍale varma ca uttamam
harasva śakra kāmam me na dadyām aham anyathā
17. Therefore, O Śakra, having made an exchange for the earrings and the excellent armor, take them, as this is my desire; otherwise, I will not give them.
शक्र उवाच ।
विदितोऽहं रवेः पूर्वमायन्नेव तवान्तिकम् ।
तेन ते सर्वमाख्यातमेवमेतन्न संशयः ॥१८॥
18. śakra uvāca ,
vidito'haṁ raveḥ pūrvamāyanneva tavāntikam ,
tena te sarvamākhyātamevametanna saṁśayaḥ.
18. śakra uvāca viditaḥ aham raveḥ pūrvam āyan eva tava
antikam tena te sarvam ākhyātam evam etat na saṃśayaḥ
18. Śakra said: "I was known to the Sun god previously, as I was coming to you. By him, everything has been revealed to you. It is indeed as you say; there is no doubt."
काममस्तु तथा तात तव कर्ण यथेच्छसि ।
वर्जयित्वा तु मे वज्रं प्रवृणीष्व यदिच्छसि ॥१९॥
19. kāmamastu tathā tāta tava karṇa yathecchasi ,
varjayitvā tu me vajraṁ pravṛṇīṣva yadicchasi.
19. kāmam astu tathā tāta tava karṇa yathā icchasi
varjayitvā tu me vajram pravṛṇīṣva yat icchasi
19. Indeed, let it be so, dear son Karna, as you wish. However, excluding my thunderbolt (vajra), choose whatever else you desire.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः कर्णः प्रहृष्टस्तु उपसंगम्य वासवम् ।
अमोघां शक्तिमभ्येत्य वव्रे संपूर्णमानसः ॥२०॥
20. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ karṇaḥ prahṛṣṭastu upasaṁgamya vāsavam ,
amoghāṁ śaktimabhyetya vavre saṁpūrṇamānasaḥ.
20. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ karṇaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ tu upasaṃgamya
vāsavam amoghām śaktim abhyetya vavre saṃpūrṇamānasaḥ
20. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, Karna, greatly delighted, approached Indra. With a fulfilled mind, he chose, having obtained the unfailing power (śakti).
कर्ण उवाच ।
वर्मणा कुण्डलाभ्यां च शक्तिं मे देहि वासव ।
अमोघां शत्रुसंघानां घातनीं पृतनामुखे ॥२१॥
21. karṇa uvāca ,
varmaṇā kuṇḍalābhyāṁ ca śaktiṁ me dehi vāsava ,
amoghāṁ śatrusaṁghānāṁ ghātanīṁ pṛtanāmukhe.
21. karṇaḥ uvāca varmaṇā kuṇḍalābhyām ca śaktim me dehi
vāsava amoghām śatruśaṅghānām ghātanīm pṛtanāmukhe
21. Karna said: O Indra, in exchange for my armor and earrings, give me the unfailing power (śakti), which is a slayer of enemy hosts at the forefront of battle.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः संचिन्त्य मनसा मुहूर्तमिव वासवः ।
शक्त्यर्थं पृथिवीपाल कर्णं वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥२२॥
22. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ saṁcintya manasā muhūrtamiva vāsavaḥ ,
śaktyarthaṁ pṛthivīpāla karṇaṁ vākyamathābravīt.
22. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ saṃcintya manasā muhūrtam iva
vāsavaḥ śaktyartham pṛthivīpāla karṇam vākyam atha abravīt
22. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, O king, Indra, having pondered in his mind for a moment regarding the power (śakti), spoke these words to Karna.
कुण्डले मे प्रयच्छस्व वर्म चैव शरीरजम् ।
गृहाण कर्ण शक्तिं त्वमनेन समयेन मे ॥२३॥
23. kuṇḍale me prayacchasva varma caiva śarīrajam ,
gṛhāṇa karṇa śaktiṁ tvamanena samayena me.
23. kuṇḍale me prayacchasva varma ca eva śarīrajam
gṛhāṇa karṇa śaktim tvam anena samayena me
23. Give me your earrings and the armor (varma) that is naturally born from your body. O Karna, you may take this spear (śakti) from me under this agreement of mine.
अमोघा हन्ति शतशः शत्रून्मम करच्युता ।
पुनश्च पाणिमभ्येति मम दैत्यान्विनिघ्नतः ॥२४॥
24. amoghā hanti śataśaḥ śatrūnmama karacyutā ,
punaśca pāṇimabhyeti mama daityānvinighnataḥ.
24. amoghā hanti śataśaḥ śatrūn mama karacyutā
punaḥ ca pāṇim abhyeti mama daityān vinihanataḥ
24. The unfailing (amoghā) [spear], once released from my hand, slays hundreds of enemies. And it returns to my hand while I am slaying the Daityas (demons).
सेयं तव करं प्राप्य हत्वैकं रिपुमूर्जितम् ।
गर्जन्तं प्रतपन्तं च मामेवैष्यति सूतज ॥२५॥
25. seyaṁ tava karaṁ prāpya hatvaikaṁ ripumūrjitam ,
garjantaṁ pratapantaṁ ca māmevaiṣyati sūtaja.
25. sā iyam tava karam prāpya hatvā ekam ripum ūrjitam
garjantam pratapantam ca mām eva eṣyati sūtaja
25. This very [spear], having reached your hand, will return to me (mām eva), O son of a charioteer (sūtaja), after killing one powerful, roaring, and formidable enemy.
कर्ण उवाच ।
एकमेवाहमिच्छामि रिपुं हन्तुं महाहवे ।
गर्जन्तं प्रतपन्तं च यतो मम भयं भवेत् ॥२६॥
26. karṇa uvāca ,
ekamevāhamicchāmi ripuṁ hantuṁ mahāhave ,
garjantaṁ pratapantaṁ ca yato mama bhayaṁ bhavet.
26. karṇa uvāca ekam eva aham icchāmi ripum hantum mahāhave
garjantam pratapantam ca yataḥ mama bhayam bhavet
26. Karna said: 'I wish to kill only one enemy in a great battle, one who is roaring and formidable, and from whom I have fear.'
इन्द्र उवाच ।
एकं हनिष्यसि रिपुं गर्जन्तं बलिनं रणे ।
त्वं तु यं प्रार्थयस्येकं रक्ष्यते स महात्मना ॥२७॥
27. indra uvāca ,
ekaṁ haniṣyasi ripuṁ garjantaṁ balinaṁ raṇe ,
tvaṁ tu yaṁ prārthayasyekaṁ rakṣyate sa mahātmanā.
27. indra uvāca ekaṃ haniṣyasi ripum garjantaṃ balinaṃ raṇe
tvaṃ tu yam prārthayasi ekaṃ rakṣyate sa mahātmanā
27. Indra said: "You will kill one mighty, roaring enemy in battle. However, the one whom you specifically pray for will be protected by the great soul (mahātman)."
यमाहुर्वेदविद्वांसो वराहमजितं हरिम् ।
नारायणमचिन्त्यं च तेन कृष्णेन रक्ष्यते ॥२८॥
28. yamāhurvedavidvāṁso varāhamajitaṁ harim ,
nārāyaṇamacintyaṁ ca tena kṛṣṇena rakṣyate.
28. yam āhuḥ vedavidvāṃsaḥ varāham ajitam harim
nārāyaṇam acintyam ca tena kṛṣṇena rakṣyate
28. He is protected by that Krishna, whom those learned in the Vedas (Vedas) call Varaha, the unconquered Hari, and the inconceivable Narayana.
कर्ण उवाच ।
एवमप्यस्तु भगवन्नेकवीरवधे मम ।
अमोघा प्रवरा शक्तिर्येन हन्यां प्रतापिनम् ॥२९॥
29. karṇa uvāca ,
evamapyastu bhagavannekavīravadhe mama ,
amoghā pravarā śaktiryena hanyāṁ pratāpinam.
29. karṇa uvāca evam api astu bhagavan ekavīravadhe
mama amoghā pravarā śaktiḥ yena hanyām pratāpinam
29. Karna said: "O revered sir (bhagavan), let it be so. Let my excellent, unfailing power (śakti) be [granted] for the killing of one hero, by which I may slay the mighty one."
उत्कृत्य तु प्रदास्यामि कुण्डले कवचं च ते ।
निकृत्तेषु च गात्रेषु न मे बीभत्सता भवेत् ॥३०॥
30. utkṛtya tu pradāsyāmi kuṇḍale kavacaṁ ca te ,
nikṛtteṣu ca gātreṣu na me bībhatsatā bhavet.
30. utkṛtya tu pradāsyāmi kuṇḍale kavacam ca te
nikṛtteṣu ca gātreṣu na me bībhatsatā bhavet
30. Indeed, I will cut out and give you the two earrings and the armor. And even when my limbs are cut off, there will be no feeling of disgust in me.
इन्द्र उवाच ।
न ते बीभत्सता कर्ण भविष्यति कथंचन ।
व्रणश्चापि न गात्रेषु यस्त्वं नानृतमिच्छसि ॥३१॥
31. indra uvāca ,
na te bībhatsatā karṇa bhaviṣyati kathaṁcana ,
vraṇaścāpi na gātreṣu yastvaṁ nānṛtamicchasi.
31. indraḥ uvāca na te bībhatsatā karṇa bhaviṣyati kathaṃcana
vraṇaḥ ca api na gātreṣu yat tvam na anṛtam icchasi
31. Indra said: O Karna, no repulsiveness will come to you in any way, nor will there be wounds on your body, because you do not desire untruth.
यादृशस्ते पितुर्वर्णस्तेजश्च वदतां वर ।
तादृशेनैव वर्णेन त्वं कर्ण भविता पुनः ॥३२॥
32. yādṛśaste piturvarṇastejaśca vadatāṁ vara ,
tādṛśenaiva varṇena tvaṁ karṇa bhavitā punaḥ.
32. yādṛśaḥ te pituḥ varṇaḥ tejaḥ ca vadatām vara
tādṛśena eva varṇena tvam karṇa bhavitā punaḥ
32. O best among speakers, just as your father's complexion and splendor are, so exactly with such a complexion, you, Karna, will again be.
विद्यमानेषु शस्त्रेषु यद्यमोघामसंशये ।
प्रमत्तो मोक्ष्यसे चापि त्वय्येवैषा पतिष्यति ॥३३॥
33. vidyamāneṣu śastreṣu yadyamoghāmasaṁśaye ,
pramatto mokṣyase cāpi tvayyevaiṣā patiṣyati.
33. vidyamāneṣu śastreṣu yadi amoghām asaṃśaye
pramattaḥ mokṣyase ca api tvayi eva eṣā patiṣyati
33. If you, being negligent, release this infallible (weapon) - and this is certain - even when other weapons are present, then this very (weapon) will fall upon you.
कर्ण उवाच ।
संशयं परमं प्राप्य विमोक्ष्ये वासवीमिमाम् ।
यथा मामात्थ शक्र त्वं सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥३४॥
34. karṇa uvāca ,
saṁśayaṁ paramaṁ prāpya vimokṣye vāsavīmimām ,
yathā māmāttha śakra tvaṁ satyametadbravīmi te.
34. karṇaḥ uvāca saṃśayam paramam prāpya vimokṣye vāsavīm
imām yathā mā āttha śakra tvam satyam etat bravīmi te
34. Karna said: Having reached the greatest danger, I will release this (weapon) of Indra. O Śakra, just as you have spoken to me, I speak this truth to you.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः शक्तिं प्रज्वलितां प्रतिगृह्य विशां पते ।
शस्त्रं गृहीत्वा निशितं सर्वगात्राण्यकृन्तत ॥३५॥
35. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ śaktiṁ prajvalitāṁ pratigṛhya viśāṁ pate ,
śastraṁ gṛhītvā niśitaṁ sarvagātrāṇyakṛntata.
35. vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ śaktim prajvalitām pratigṛhya
viśām pate śastram gṛhītvā niśitam sarvagātrāṇi akṛntata
35. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, O lord of men (Janamejaya), having received the blazing spear, he took a sharpened weapon and cut off all his own limbs.
ततो देवा मानवा दानवाश्च निकृन्तन्तं कर्णमात्मानमेवम् ।
दृष्ट्वा सर्वे सिद्धसंघाश्च नेदुर्न ह्यस्यासीद्दुःखजो वै विकारः ॥३६॥
36. tato devā mānavā dānavāśca; nikṛntantaṁ karṇamātmānamevam ,
dṛṣṭvā sarve siddhasaṁghāśca nedu;rna hyasyāsīdduḥkhajo vai vikāraḥ.
36. tataḥ devā mānavā dānavāḥ ca
nikṛntantam karṇam ātmānam evam dṛṣṭvā
sarve siddhasaṅghāḥ ca neduḥ na
hi asya āsīt duḥkhajaḥ vai vikāraḥ
36. Then, the gods, humans, and dānavas (demons), as well as all the hosts of siddhas (perfected beings), having seen Karṇa thus cutting his own (ātman) body, roared [in amazement and approval]. Indeed, there was no sign of sorrow or distress (vikāra) visible in him.
ततो दिव्या दुन्दुभयः प्रणेदुः पपातोच्चैः पुष्पवर्षं च दिव्यम् ।
दृष्ट्वा कर्णं शस्त्रसंकृत्तगात्रं मुहुश्चापि स्मयमानं नृवीरम् ॥३७॥
37. tato divyā dundubhayaḥ praṇeduḥ; papātoccaiḥ puṣpavarṣaṁ ca divyam ,
dṛṣṭvā karṇaṁ śastrasaṁkṛttagātraṁ; muhuścāpi smayamānaṁ nṛvīram.

37. Then, divine drums (dundubhayaḥ) resounded, and a divine shower of flowers fell from above. This happened upon seeing Karṇa, the hero among men, whose limbs had been cut by weapons, yet who was repeatedly smiling.
ततश्छित्त्वा कवचं दिव्यमङ्गात्तथैवार्द्रं प्रददौ वासवाय ।
तथोत्कृत्य प्रददौ कुण्डले ते वैकर्तनः कर्मणा तेन कर्णः ॥३८॥
38. tataśchittvā kavacaṁ divyamaṅgā;ttathaivārdraṁ pradadau vāsavāya ,
tathotkṛtya pradadau kuṇḍale te; vaikartanaḥ karmaṇā tena karṇaḥ.

tathā eva ārdrām pradadau vāsavāya
tathā utkṛtya pradadau kuṇḍale

38. Then, having cut the divine armor (kavaca) from his body, still moist [with blood], Karṇa gave it to Vāsava (Indra). Similarly, Karṇa, the son of Vikartana (the Sun god), by that very noble action (karma), gave him those two earrings (kuṇḍale) after having extracted them.
ततः शक्रः प्रहसन्वञ्चयित्वा कर्णं लोके यशसा योजयित्वा ।
कृतं कार्यं पाण्डवानां हि मेने ततः पश्चाद्दिवमेवोत्पपात ॥३९॥
39. tataḥ śakraḥ prahasanvañcayitvā; karṇaṁ loke yaśasā yojayitvā ,
kṛtaṁ kāryaṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ hi mene; tataḥ paścāddivamevotpapāta.

39. Then Indra, laughing, after having deceived Karna and endowed him with fame in the world, indeed considered the task of the Pandavas accomplished. Afterwards, he ascended directly to heaven.
श्रुत्वा कर्णं मुषितं धार्तराष्ट्रा दीनाः सर्वे भग्नदर्पा इवासन् ।
तां चावस्थां गमितं सूतपुत्रं श्रुत्वा पार्था जहृषुः काननस्थाः ॥४०॥
40. śrutvā karṇaṁ muṣitaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrā; dīnāḥ sarve bhagnadarpā ivāsan ,
tāṁ cāvasthāṁ gamitaṁ sūtaputraṁ; śrutvā pārthā jahṛṣuḥ kānanasthāḥ.
40. śrutvā karṇaṃ muṣitaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ
dīnāḥ sarve bhagnadarpāḥ iva āsan
tām ca avasthāṃ gamitaṃ sūtaputraṃ
śrutvā pārthāḥ jahṛṣuḥ kānanastāḥ
40. Hearing that Karna had been deprived, all the Dhritarashtras became dejected, as if their pride was shattered. And hearing that the son of Suta (Karna) had been reduced to such a state, the Pandavas, who were dwelling in the forest, rejoiced.
जनमेजय उवाच ।
क्वस्था वीराः पाण्डवास्ते बभूवुः कुतश्चैतच्छ्रुतवन्तः प्रियं ते ।
किं वाकार्षुर्द्वादशेऽब्दे व्यतीते तन्मे सर्वं भगवान्व्याकरोतु ॥४१॥
41. janamejaya uvāca ,
kvasthā vīrāḥ pāṇḍavāste babhūvuḥ; kutaścaitacchrutavantaḥ priyaṁ te ,
kiṁ vākārṣurdvādaśe'bde vyatīte; tanme sarvaṁ bhagavānvyākarotu.

te babhūvuḥ kutaḥ ca etat śrutavantaḥ
priyaṃ te kim vā akārṣuḥ dvādaśe abde
vyatīte tat me sarvaṃ bhagavān vyākarotu
41. Janamejaya said: "Where were those heroic Pandavas staying? And from where did they hear this pleasing news? What indeed did they do after the twelfth year had passed? O venerable one, please explain all that to me."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
लब्ध्वा कृष्णां सैन्धवं द्रावयित्वा विप्रैः सार्धं काम्यकादाश्रमात्ते ।
मार्कण्डेयाच्छ्रुतवन्तः पुराणं देवर्षीणां चरितं विस्तरेण ॥४२॥
42. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
labdhvā kṛṣṇāṁ saindhavaṁ drāvayitvā; vipraiḥ sārdhaṁ kāmyakādāśramātte ,
mārkaṇḍeyācchrutavantaḥ purāṇaṁ; devarṣīṇāṁ caritaṁ vistareṇa.
42. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca labdhvā kṛṣṇāṃ
saindhavaṃ drāvayitvā vipraiḥ sārdhaṃ
kāmyakāt āśramāt te mārkaṇḍeyāt śrutavantaḥ
purāṇaṃ devarṣīṇāṃ caritaṃ vistareṇa
42. Vaishampayana said: "Having recovered Krishna (Draupadi) and driven away the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha), they (the Pandavas), along with the Brahmins, heard from Markandeya at that hermitage in Kamyaka, the ancient tales (purāṇa) and the deeds of the divine sages in detail."
प्रत्याजग्मुः सरथाः सानुयात्राः सर्वैः सार्धं सूदपौरोगवैश्च ।
ततः पुण्यं द्वैतवनं नृवीरा निस्तीर्योग्रं वनवासं समग्रम् ॥४३॥
43. pratyājagmuḥ sarathāḥ sānuyātrāḥ; sarvaiḥ sārdhaṁ sūdapaurogavaiśca ,
tataḥ puṇyaṁ dvaitavanaṁ nṛvīrā; nistīryograṁ vanavāsaṁ samagram.

43. The heroes returned to the sacred Dvaita forest, accompanied by their chariots, their followers, and all, including the cooks and chief servants, after having completed their entire harsh period of forest exile.
