किमसौ पाण्डवो राजा धर्मपुत्रोऽभ्यभाषत ।
श्रुत्वेमा बहुलाः सेनाः प्रत्यर्थेन समागताः ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
kimasau pāṇḍavo rājā dharmaputro'bhyabhāṣata ,
śrutvemā bahulāḥ senāḥ pratyarthena samāgatāḥ.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke: "What did that Pāṇḍava king, Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma-putra), say after hearing about these numerous armies assembled by the adversary?"
किमिच्छत्यभिसंरम्भाद्योत्स्यमानो युधिष्ठिरः ।
कस्य स्विद्भ्रातृपुत्राणां चिन्तासु मुखमीक्षते ॥२॥
2. kimicchatyabhisaṁrambhādyotsyamāno yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
kasya svidbhrātṛputrāṇāṁ cintāsu mukhamīkṣate.

2. What does Yudhishthira, who is about to fight, desire from his intense indignation? At the face of which among his nephews does he look with concern?
के स्विदेनं वारयन्ति शाम्य युध्येति वा पुनः ।
निकृत्या कोपितं मन्दैर्धर्मज्ञं धर्मचारिणम् ॥३॥
3. ke svidenaṁ vārayanti śāmya yudhyeti vā punaḥ ,
nikṛtyā kopitaṁ mandairdharmajñaṁ dharmacāriṇam.
3. ke svit enam vārayanti śāmya yudhya iti vā punaḥ
nikṛtyā kopitam mandaiḥ dharmajñam dharmacāriṇam
3. Who indeed restrains him, telling him to "Be calm" or perhaps saying "Fight again"? Who restrains him, a knower of natural law (dharma) and a follower of it (dharma), who has been enraged by the foolish ones through deceit?
संजय उवाच ।
राज्ञो मुखमुदीक्षन्ते पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह ।
युधिष्ठिरस्य भद्रं ते स सर्वाननुशास्ति च ॥४॥
4. saṁjaya uvāca ,
rājño mukhamudīkṣante pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
yudhiṣṭhirasya bhadraṁ te sa sarvānanuśāsti ca.
4. saṃjaya uvāca rājñaḥ mukham udīkṣante pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ
saha yudhiṣṭhirasya bhadram te sa sarvān anuśāsti ca
4. Sanjaya said: "The Panchalas, along with the Pandavas, look to the face of King Yudhishthira. May prosperity be yours! And he instructs everyone."
पृथग्भूताः पाण्डवानां पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजाः ।
आयान्तमभिनन्दन्ति कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥५॥
5. pṛthagbhūtāḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ pāñcālānāṁ rathavrajāḥ ,
āyāntamabhinandanti kuntīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.

5. The separate divisions of chariots belonging to the Pandavas and the Panchalas hail Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, as he approaches.
तमः सूर्यमिवोद्यन्तं कौन्तेयं दीप्ततेजसम् ।
पाञ्चालाः प्रतिनन्दन्ति तेजोराशिमिवोद्यतम् ॥६॥
6. tamaḥ sūryamivodyantaṁ kaunteyaṁ dīptatejasam ,
pāñcālāḥ pratinandanti tejorāśimivodyatam.
6. tamaḥ sūryam iva udyantam kaunteyam dīptatejasam
pāñcālāḥ pratinandanti tejorāśim iva udyatam
6. The Pañcālas rejoice at the son of Kunti (Kaunteya), whose blazing splendor is like the rising sun dispelling darkness, and who shines forth like a rising mass of radiance.
आ गोपालाविपालेभ्यो नन्दमानं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
पाञ्चालाः केकया मत्स्याः प्रतिनन्दन्ति पाण्डवम् ॥७॥
7. ā gopālāvipālebhyo nandamānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
pāñcālāḥ kekayā matsyāḥ pratinandanti pāṇḍavam.
7. ā gopāla-avipālebhyaḥ nandamānam yudhiṣṭhiram
pāñcālāḥ kekayāḥ matsyāḥ pratinandanti pāṇḍavam
7. From cowherds even to shepherds, the Pañcālas, Kekayas, and Matsyas all rejoice in Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Pāṇḍu, who is delighting them.
ब्राह्मण्यो राजपुत्र्यश्च विशां दुहितरश्च याः ।
क्रीडन्त्योऽभिसमायान्ति पार्थं संनद्धमीक्षितुम् ॥८॥
8. brāhmaṇyo rājaputryaśca viśāṁ duhitaraśca yāḥ ,
krīḍantyo'bhisamāyānti pārthaṁ saṁnaddhamīkṣitum.
8. brāhmaṇyaḥ rājaputryaḥ ca viśām duhitarah ca yāḥ
krīḍantyaḥ abhisamayānti pārtham sannaddham īkṣitum
8. Brahmin women, princesses, and also the daughters of the Vaiśyas, who are playing, all gather to see Arjuna (Pārtha), fully armed and ready.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
संजयाचक्ष्व केनास्मान्पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ।
धृष्टद्युम्नेन सेनान्या सोमकाः किंबला इव ॥९॥
9. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
saṁjayācakṣva kenāsmānpāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnena senānyā somakāḥ kiṁbalā iva.
9. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca saṃjaya ācakṣva kena asmān pāṇḍavāḥ
abhyayuñjata dhṛṣṭadyumnena senānyā somakāḥ kimbalāḥ iva
9. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'O Saṃjaya, tell me, by whom were the Pāṇḍavas deployed against us? What strength did the Somakas, with Dhṛṣṭadyumna as their commander, possess?'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गावल्गणिस्तु तत्पृष्टः सभायां कुरुसंसदि ।
निःश्वस्य सुभृशं दीर्घं मुहुः संचिन्तयन्निव ।
तत्रानिमित्ततो दैवात्सूतं कश्मलमाविशत् ॥१०॥
10. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
gāvalgaṇistu tatpṛṣṭaḥ sabhāyāṁ kurusaṁsadi ,
niḥśvasya subhṛśaṁ dīrghaṁ muhuḥ saṁcintayanniva ,
tatrānimittato daivātsūtaṁ kaśmalamāviśat.
10. vaiśampāyana uvāca | gāvalgaṇiḥ tu tat
pṛṣṭaḥ sabhāyām kurusaṃsadi | niḥśvasya
subhṛśam dīrgham muhuḥ saṃcintayan iva | tatra
animittataḥ daivāt sūtam kaśmalam āviśat
10. Vaiśampāyana said: Gāvālgaṇi (Saṃjaya), having been questioned thus in the assembly of the Kurus, sighed very deeply repeatedly, as if lost in thought. Then, unexpectedly and by divine will (daiva), a great distress (kaśmala) overcame the charioteer (Saṃjaya).
तदाचचक्षे पुरुषः सभायां राजसंसदि ।
संजयोऽयं महाराज मूर्च्छितः पतितो भुवि ।
वाचं न सृजते कांचिद्धीनप्रज्ञोऽल्पचेतनः ॥११॥
11. tadācacakṣe puruṣaḥ sabhāyāṁ rājasaṁsadi ,
saṁjayo'yaṁ mahārāja mūrcchitaḥ patito bhuvi ,
vācaṁ na sṛjate kāṁciddhīnaprajño'lpacetanaḥ.
11. tadā acacakṣe puruṣaḥ sabhāyām
rājasaṃsadi | saṃjayaḥ ayam mahārāja
mūrcchitaḥ patitaḥ bhuvi | vācam na
sṛjate kāṃcit hīnaprajñaḥ alpacetanaḥ
11. Then a person (puruṣa) in the royal assembly announced: "This Saṃjaya, O great king, has fainted and fallen to the ground. He utters no speech, his intellect is diminished, and he is barely conscious."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
अपश्यत्संजयो नूनं कुन्तीपुत्रान्महारथान् ।
तैरस्य पुरुषव्याघ्रैर्भृशमुद्वेजितं मनः ॥१२॥
12. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
apaśyatsaṁjayo nūnaṁ kuntīputrānmahārathān ,
tairasya puruṣavyāghrairbhṛśamudvejitaṁ manaḥ.
12. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | apaśyat saṃjayaḥ nūnam kuntīputrān
mahārathān | taiḥ asya puruṣavyāghraiḥ bhṛśam udvejitam manaḥ
12. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Saṃjaya must have surely seen the sons of Kuntī, those great charioteers. His mind has been greatly disturbed by those tiger-like men (puruṣa)."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
संजयश्चेतनां लब्ध्वा प्रत्याश्वस्येदमब्रवीत् ।
धृतराष्ट्रं महाराज सभायां कुरुसंसदि ॥१३॥
13. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
saṁjayaścetanāṁ labdhvā pratyāśvasyedamabravīt ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahārāja sabhāyāṁ kurusaṁsadi.
13. vaiśampāyana uvāca | saṃjayaḥ cetanām labdhvā pratyāśvasya
idam abravīt | dhṛtarāṣṭram mahārāja sabhāyām kurusaṃsadi
13. Vaiśampāyana said: Saṃjaya, having regained consciousness and recovered, then said this to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, O great king, in the assembly of the Kurus.
दृष्टवानस्मि राजेन्द्र कुन्तीपुत्रान्महारथान् ।
मत्स्यराजगृहावासादवरोधेन कर्शितान् ।
शृणु यैर्हि महाराज पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥१४॥
14. dṛṣṭavānasmi rājendra kuntīputrānmahārathān ,
matsyarājagṛhāvāsādavarodhena karśitān ,
śṛṇu yairhi mahārāja pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
14. dṛṣṭavān asmi rājendra kuntīputrān
mahārathān matsyarājagṛhāvāsāt
avarodhena karśitān śṛṇu yaiḥ
hi mahārāja pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
14. O King of kings, I have seen the sons of Kunti, those great charioteers, who were emaciated by their confinement and stay in the Matsya king's palace. Listen now, O great king, to those with whom the Pāṇḍavas engaged.
यो नैव रोषान्न भयान्न कामान्नार्थकारणात् ।
न हेतुवादाद्धर्मात्मा सत्यं जह्यात्कथंचन ॥१५॥
15. yo naiva roṣānna bhayānna kāmānnārthakāraṇāt ,
na hetuvādāddharmātmā satyaṁ jahyātkathaṁcana.
15. yaḥ na eva roṣāt na bhayāt na kāmāt na arthakāraṇāt
na hetuvādāt dharmātmā satyam jahyāt kathaṃcana
15. The one whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteousness would never abandon truth (satya) under any circumstances, whether due to anger, fear, desire, pursuit of wealth, or logical arguments.
यः प्रमाणं महाराज धर्मे धर्मभृतां वरः ।
अजातशत्रुणा तेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥१६॥
16. yaḥ pramāṇaṁ mahārāja dharme dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
ajātaśatruṇā tena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
16. yaḥ pramāṇam mahārāja dharme dharmabhṛtām
varaḥ ajātaśatruṇā tena pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
16. O great king, the Pāṇḍavas engaged with him, Ajātaśatru, who is the ultimate authority in matters of natural law (dharma) and the best among those who uphold natural law (dharma).
यस्य बाहुबले तुल्यः पृथिव्यां नास्ति कश्चन ।
यो वै सर्वान्महीपालान्वशे चक्रे धनुर्धरः ।
तेन वो भीमसेनेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥१७॥
17. yasya bāhubale tulyaḥ pṛthivyāṁ nāsti kaścana ,
yo vai sarvānmahīpālānvaśe cakre dhanurdharaḥ ,
tena vo bhīmasenena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
17. yasya bāhubale tulyaḥ pṛthivyām na
asti kaścana yaḥ vai sarvān mahīpālān
vaśe cakre dhanurdharaḥ tena
vaḥ bhīmasenena pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
17. With your Bhīmasena, the Pāṇḍavas engaged - he to whose arm-strength no one on earth is equal, and who, as a wielder of the bow, indeed brought all kings under his control.
निःसृतानां जतुगृहाद्धिडिम्बात्पुरुषादकात् ।
य एषामभवद्द्वीपः कुन्तीपुत्रो वृकोदरः ॥१८॥
18. niḥsṛtānāṁ jatugṛhāddhiḍimbātpuruṣādakāt ,
ya eṣāmabhavaddvīpaḥ kuntīputro vṛkodaraḥ.
18. niḥsṛtānām jatugṛhāt hiḍimbāt puruṣādakāt
yaḥ eṣām abhavat dvīpaḥ kuntīputraḥ vṛkodaraḥ
18. Kuntī's son, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), became a refuge for them, those who had escaped from the house of lac and from Hiḍimba, the man-eater.
याज्ञसेनीमथो यत्र सिन्धुराजोऽपकृष्टवान् ।
तत्रैषामभवद्द्वीपः कुन्तीपुत्रो वृकोदरः ॥१९॥
19. yājñasenīmatho yatra sindhurājo'pakṛṣṭavān ,
tatraiṣāmabhavaddvīpaḥ kuntīputro vṛkodaraḥ.
19. yājñasenīm atho yatra sindhurājaḥ apakṛṣṭavān
tatra eṣām abhavat dvīpaḥ kuntīputraḥ vṛkodaraḥ
19. Furthermore, when the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha) abducted Yājñasenī (Draupadī), Kuntī's son, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), became their refuge.
यश्च तान्संगतान्सर्वान्पाण्डवान्वारणावते ।
दह्यतो मोचयामास तेन वस्तेऽभ्ययुञ्जत ॥२०॥
20. yaśca tānsaṁgatānsarvānpāṇḍavānvāraṇāvate ,
dahyato mocayāmāsa tena vaste'bhyayuñjata.
20. yaḥ ca tān saṅgatān sarvān pāṇḍavān vāraṇāvate
dahyataḥ mocayāmāsa tena vaḥ te abhyayuñjata
20. And he who rescued all those Pāṇḍavas, assembled in Vāraṇāvata, from being burnt - it was because of him (Bhīma) that they (the Kauravas) assailed them (the Pāṇḍavas).
कृष्णायाश्चरता प्रीतिं येन क्रोधवशा हताः ।
प्रविश्य विषमं घोरं पर्वतं गन्धमादनम् ॥२१॥
21. kṛṣṇāyāścaratā prītiṁ yena krodhavaśā hatāḥ ,
praviśya viṣamaṁ ghoraṁ parvataṁ gandhamādanam.
21. kṛṣṇāyāḥ caratā prītim yena krodhavaśāḥ hatāḥ
praviśya viṣamam ghoram parvatam gandhamādanam
21. And by him (Bhīma), who acted to fulfill Kṛṣṇā's (Draupadī's) desire, the wrathful ones were killed, after he had entered the dreadful and formidable Gandhamādana mountain.
यस्य नागायुतं वीर्यं भुजयोः सारमर्पितम् ।
तेन वो भीमसेनेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥२२॥
22. yasya nāgāyutaṁ vīryaṁ bhujayoḥ sāramarpitam ,
tena vo bhīmasenena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
22. yasya nāgāyutam vīryam bhujayoḥ sāram arpitam
| tena vaḥ bhīmasenena pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
22. The Pandavas engaged you with that Bhimasena, in whose arms was deposited the essence of the strength of ten thousand elephants.
कृष्णद्वितीयो विक्रम्य तुष्ट्यर्थं जातवेदसः ।
अजयद्यः पुरा वीरो युध्यमानं पुरंदरम् ॥२३॥
23. kṛṣṇadvitīyo vikramya tuṣṭyarthaṁ jātavedasaḥ ,
ajayadyaḥ purā vīro yudhyamānaṁ puraṁdaram.
23. kṛṣṇadvitīyaḥ vikramya tuṣṭyartham jātavedasaḥ
| ajayat yaḥ purā vīraḥ yudhyamānam purandaram
23. This hero, accompanied by Kṛṣṇa, who formerly, having displayed great valor for the satisfaction of Agni, conquered the fighting Purandara (Indra).
यः स साक्षान्महादेवं गिरिशं शूलपाणिनम् ।
तोषयामास युद्धेन देवदेवमुमापतिम् ॥२४॥
24. yaḥ sa sākṣānmahādevaṁ giriśaṁ śūlapāṇinam ,
toṣayāmāsa yuddhena devadevamumāpatim.
24. yaḥ sa sākṣāt mahādevam giriśam śūlapāṇinam
| toṣayāmāsa yuddhena devadevam umāpatim
24. This one who, by fighting, directly pleased Mahādeva (Śiva) himself, Giriśa, the trident-wielder, the God of gods, and the husband of Umā.
यश्च सर्वान्वशे चक्रे लोकपालान्धनुर्धरः ।
तेन वो विजयेनाजौ पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥२५॥
25. yaśca sarvānvaśe cakre lokapālāndhanurdharaḥ ,
tena vo vijayenājau pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
25. yaḥ ca sarvān vaśe cakre lokapālān dhanurdharaḥ
| tena vaḥ vijayena ājau pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
25. And by that bow-wielder who brought all the protectors of the worlds under his control, the Pandavas engaged you in battle for victory.
यः प्रतीचीं दिशं चक्रे वशे म्लेच्छगणायुताम् ।
स तत्र नकुलो योद्धा चित्रयोधी व्यवस्थितः ॥२६॥
26. yaḥ pratīcīṁ diśaṁ cakre vaśe mlecchagaṇāyutām ,
sa tatra nakulo yoddhā citrayodhī vyavasthitaḥ.
26. yaḥ pratīcīm diśam cakre vaśe mlecchagaṇāyutām
saḥ tatra nakulaḥ yoddhā citrayodhī vyavasthitaḥ
26. Nakula, the warrior who fought wonderfully, was stationed there; he was the one who brought the western region, teeming with groups of foreign tribes, under his control.
तेन वो दर्शनीयेन वीरेणातिधनुर्भृता ।
माद्रीपुत्रेण कौरव्य पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥२७॥
27. tena vo darśanīyena vīreṇātidhanurbhṛtā ,
mādrīputreṇa kauravya pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
27. tena vaḥ darśanīyena vīreṇa atidhanurbhṛtā
mādrīputreṇa kauravya pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
27. O scion of Kuru, the Pandavas engaged you (in battle) through that handsome hero, the mighty archer, the son of Madri (Nakula).
यः काशीनङ्गमगधान्कलिङ्गांश्च युधाजयत् ।
तेन वः सहदेवेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥२८॥
28. yaḥ kāśīnaṅgamagadhānkaliṅgāṁśca yudhājayat ,
tena vaḥ sahadevena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
28. yaḥ kāśīn aṅgamagadhān kaliṅgān ca yudhā ajayat
tena vaḥ sahadevena pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
28. He who conquered Kashi, Anga, Magadha, and Kalinga through battle - by means of that Sahadeva, the Pandavas engaged you (in battle).
यस्य वीर्येण सदृशाश्चत्वारो भुवि मानवाः ।
अश्वत्थामा धृष्टकेतुः प्रद्युम्नो रुक्मिरेव च ॥२९॥
29. yasya vīryeṇa sadṛśāścatvāro bhuvi mānavāḥ ,
aśvatthāmā dhṛṣṭaketuḥ pradyumno rukmireva ca.
29. yasya vīryeṇa sadṛśāḥ ca catvāraḥ bhuvi mānavāḥ
aśvatthāmā dhṛṣṭaketuḥ pradyumnaḥ rukmin eva ca
29. Whose (Sahadeva's) valor is matched by (only) four men on earth: Ashwatthama, Dhṛṣṭaketu, Pradyumna, and Rukmin.
तेन वः सहदेवेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ।
यवीयसा नृवीरेण माद्रीनन्दिकरेण च ॥३०॥
30. tena vaḥ sahadevena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata ,
yavīyasā nṛvīreṇa mādrīnandikareṇa ca.
30. tena vaḥ sahadevena pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
yavīyasā nṛvīreṇa mādrīnandikareṇa ca
30. The Pāṇḍavas engaged against you (plural) with that Sahadeva, who was their youngest, a hero among men, and the one who brought joy to Mādrī.
तपश्चचार या घोरं काशिकन्या पुरा सती ।
भीष्मस्य वधमिच्छन्ती प्रेत्यापि भरतर्षभ ॥३१॥
31. tapaścacāra yā ghoraṁ kāśikanyā purā satī ,
bhīṣmasya vadhamicchantī pretyāpi bharatarṣabha.
31. tapaḥ cacāra yā ghoram kāśikanyā purā satī
bhīṣmasya vadham icchanti pretya api bharatarṣabha
31. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), formerly, that virtuous daughter of Kāśi (Amba) performed a terrible austerity (tapas), desiring Bhīṣma's death even after she passed away.
पाञ्चालस्य सुता जज्ञे दैवाच्च स पुनः पुमान् ।
स्त्रीपुंसोः पुरुषव्याघ्र यः स वेद गुणागुणान् ॥३२॥
32. pāñcālasya sutā jajñe daivācca sa punaḥ pumān ,
strīpuṁsoḥ puruṣavyāghra yaḥ sa veda guṇāguṇān.
32. pāñcālasya sutā jajñe daivāt ca sa punaḥ pumān
strīpuṃsoḥ puruṣavyāghra yaḥ sa veda guṇāguṇān
32. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), the daughter of Pāñcāla was born, and by destiny, that same person (Śikhaṇḍī) became a man again. He knew the merits and demerits of both women and men.
यः कलिङ्गान्समापेदे पाञ्चालो युद्धदुर्मदः ।
शिखण्डिना वः कुरवः कृतास्त्रेणाभ्ययुञ्जत ॥३३॥
33. yaḥ kaliṅgānsamāpede pāñcālo yuddhadurmadaḥ ,
śikhaṇḍinā vaḥ kuravaḥ kṛtāstreṇābhyayuñjata.
33. yaḥ kaliṅgān samāpede pāñcālaḥ yuddhadurmadhaḥ
śikhaṇḍinā vaḥ kuravaḥ kṛtāstreṇa abhyayuñjata
33. That Pāñcāla prince, who was fierce in battle and attacked the Kaliṅgas - with that same Śikhaṇḍī, who was skilled in weaponry, the Kurus engaged against you (plural).
यां यक्षः पुरुषं चक्रे भीष्मस्य निधने किल ।
महेष्वासेन रौद्रेण पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥३४॥
34. yāṁ yakṣaḥ puruṣaṁ cakre bhīṣmasya nidhane kila ,
maheṣvāsena raudreṇa pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.

34. It is said that the Pāṇḍavas engaged in battle with that fierce great bowman whom a yakṣa had transformed into a man (puruṣa) at the time of Bhīṣma's death.
महेष्वासा राजपुत्रा भ्रातरः पञ्च केकयाः ।
सुमृष्टकवचाः शूरास्तैश्च वस्तेऽभ्ययुञ्जत ॥३५॥
35. maheṣvāsā rājaputrā bhrātaraḥ pañca kekayāḥ ,
sumṛṣṭakavacāḥ śūrāstaiśca vaste'bhyayuñjata.
35. maheṣvāsāḥ rājaputrāḥ bhrātaraḥ pañca kekayāḥ |
sumṛṣṭakavacāḥ śūrāḥ taiḥ ca vas te abhyayuñjata
35. The five Kekaya princes, who were great bowmen and valiant heroes with well-polished armors, also engaged in battle with them (the Pāṇḍavas' other allies) against your (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) forces.
यो दीर्घबाहुः क्षिप्रास्त्रो धृतिमान्सत्यविक्रमः ।
तेन वो वृष्णिवीरेण युयुधानेन संगरः ॥३६॥
36. yo dīrghabāhuḥ kṣiprāstro dhṛtimānsatyavikramaḥ ,
tena vo vṛṣṇivīreṇa yuyudhānena saṁgaraḥ.
36. yaḥ dīrghabāhuḥ kṣiprāstraḥ dhṛtimān satyavikramaḥ
| tena vas vṛṣṇivīreṇa yuyudhānena saṅgaraḥ
36. With Yuyudhāna, that hero of the Vṛṣṇis who is long-armed, swift in wielding weapons, resolute, and truly valorous, there was battle against your (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) forces.
य आसीच्छरणं काले पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ।
रणे तेन विराटेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥३७॥
37. ya āsīccharaṇaṁ kāle pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām ,
raṇe tena virāṭena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
37. yaḥ āsīt śaraṇam kāle pāṇḍavānām mahātmanām

37. The Pāṇḍavas engaged in battle with King Virāṭa, who, in due course, had been a refuge for the great-souled (mahātman) Pāṇḍavas.
यः स काशिपती राजा वाराणस्यां महारथः ।
स तेषामभवद्योद्धा तेन वस्तेऽभ्ययुञ्जत ॥३८॥
38. yaḥ sa kāśipatī rājā vārāṇasyāṁ mahārathaḥ ,
sa teṣāmabhavadyoddhā tena vaste'bhyayuñjata.
38. yaḥ saḥ kāśīpatiḥ rājā vārāṇasyām mahārathaḥ saḥ
teṣām abhavat yoddhā tena vaḥ te abhyayuñjata
38. That king, the lord of Kashi, a great charioteer in Varanasi, became a warrior for them. With him, they engaged you (in battle).
शिशुभिर्दुर्जयैः संख्ये द्रौपदेयैर्महात्मभिः ।
आशीविषसमस्पर्शैः पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥३९॥
39. śiśubhirdurjayaiḥ saṁkhye draupadeyairmahātmabhiḥ ,
āśīviṣasamasparśaiḥ pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
39. śiśubhiḥ durjayaiḥ saṅkhye draupadeyaiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
āśīviṣasamasparśaiḥ pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
39. The Pāṇḍavas engaged (you) in battle with Draupadī's invincible (durjaya), great-souled (mahātman) sons, whose touch was like that of venomous snakes (āśīviṣasamasparśa).
यः कृष्णसदृशो वीर्ये युधिष्ठिरसमो दमे ।
तेनाभिमन्युना संख्ये पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥४०॥
40. yaḥ kṛṣṇasadṛśo vīrye yudhiṣṭhirasamo dame ,
tenābhimanyunā saṁkhye pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
40. yaḥ kṛṣṇasadṛśaḥ vīrye yudhiṣṭhirasamaḥ dame
tena abhimanyunā saṅkhye pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
40. With that Abhimanyu, who was similar to Kṛṣṇa in valor (vīrya) and equal to Yudhiṣṭhira in self-control (dama), the Pāṇḍavas engaged (you) in battle (saṅkhye).
यश्चैवाप्रतिमो वीर्ये धृष्टकेतुर्महायशाः ।
दुःसहः समरे क्रुद्धः शैशुपालिर्महारथः ।
तेन वश्चेदिराजेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥४१॥
41. yaścaivāpratimo vīrye dhṛṣṭaketurmahāyaśāḥ ,
duḥsahaḥ samare kruddhaḥ śaiśupālirmahārathaḥ ,
tena vaścedirājena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
41. yaḥ ca eva apratimaḥ vīrye dhṛṣṭaketuḥ
mahāyaśāḥ duḥsahaḥ samare
kruddhaḥ śaiśupāliḥ mahārathaḥ tena
vaḥ cedirājena pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
41. And with that king of Cedis (Cedirāja), Dhṛṣṭaketu, who was unequaled (apratima) in valor (vīrya), greatly famous (mahāyaśas), a great charioteer (mahāratha), the son of Śiśupāla (Śaiśupāli), and unbearable (dussaha) when enraged (kruddha) in battle (samare), the Pāṇḍavas engaged you (in battle).
यः संश्रयः पाण्डवानां देवानामिव वासवः ।
तेन वो वासुदेवेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥४२॥
42. yaḥ saṁśrayaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ devānāmiva vāsavaḥ ,
tena vo vāsudevena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
42. yaḥ saṃśrayaḥ pāṇḍavānām devānām iva vāsavaḥ
tena vaḥ vāsudevena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata
42. He who is the support of the Pāṇḍavas, just as Vāsava (Indra) is the support of the gods, with that Vāsudeva, the Pāṇḍavas allied themselves.
तथा चेदिपतेर्भ्राता शरभो भरतर्षभ ।
करकर्षेण सहितस्ताभ्यां वस्तेऽभ्ययुञ्जत ॥४३॥
43. tathā cedipaterbhrātā śarabho bharatarṣabha ,
karakarṣeṇa sahitastābhyāṁ vaste'bhyayuñjata.
43. tathā cedipateḥ bhrātā śarabhaḥ bharatarṣabha
karakarṣeṇa sahitaḥ tābhyām vaste abhyayuñjata
43. Similarly, Śarabha, brother of the Cedi ruler, O best of Bharatas, together with Karakarṣa and the people of Vasta, allied themselves with those two (Pāṇḍavas and Vāsudeva).
जारासंधिः सहदेवो जयत्सेनश्च तावुभौ ।
द्रुपदश्च महातेजा बलेन महता वृतः ।
त्यक्तात्मा पाण्डवार्थाय योत्स्यमानो व्यवस्थितः ॥४४॥
44. jārāsaṁdhiḥ sahadevo jayatsenaśca tāvubhau ,
drupadaśca mahātejā balena mahatā vṛtaḥ ,
tyaktātmā pāṇḍavārthāya yotsyamāno vyavasthitaḥ.
44. jārāsaṃdhiḥ sahadevaḥ jayatsenaḥ
ca tau ubhau drupadaḥ ca mahātejā
balena mahatā vṛtaḥ tyaktātmā
pāṇḍavārthāya yotsyamānaḥ vyavasthitaḥ
44. Jārāsandhi, Sahadeva, and Jayatsena - these two (Sahadeva and Jayatsena), and Drupada, the highly energetic one, surrounded by a great army, stood ready to fight, having abandoned his life (ātman) for the Pāṇḍavas' cause.
एते चान्ये च बहवः प्राच्योदीच्या महीक्षितः ।
शतशो यानपाश्रित्य धर्मराजो व्यवस्थितः ॥४५॥
45. ete cānye ca bahavaḥ prācyodīcyā mahīkṣitaḥ ,
śataśo yānapāśritya dharmarājo vyavasthitaḥ.
45. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ prācyodīcyāḥ mahīkṣitaḥ
śataśaḥ yān apāśritya dharmarājaḥ vyavasthitaḥ
45. These and many other kings from the eastern and northern regions, numbering in the hundreds, by relying on whom the king of righteousness (dharma), Yudhiṣṭhira, stood firm.
