धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।

श्रुत्वेमा बहुलाः सेनाः प्रत्यर्थेन समागताः ॥१॥

Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke: "What did that Pāṇḍava king, Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma-putra), say after hearing about these numerous armies assembled by the adversary?"
किमिच्छत्यभिसंरम्भाद्योत्स्यमानो युधिष्ठिरः ।
कस्य स्विद्भ्रातृपुत्राणां चिन्तासु मुखमीक्षते ॥२॥

What does Yudhishthira, who is about to fight, desire from his intense indignation? At the face of which among his nephews does he look with concern?
के स्विदेनं वारयन्ति शाम्य युध्येति वा पुनः ।
निकृत्या कोपितं मन्दैर्धर्मज्ञं धर्मचारिणम् ॥३॥

3. ke svidenaṁ vārayanti śāmya yudhyeti vā punaḥ ,

Who indeed restrains him, telling him to "Be calm" or perhaps saying "Fight again"? Who restrains him, a knower of natural law (dharma) and a follower of it (dharma), who has been enraged by the foolish ones through deceit?
संजय उवाच ।
राज्ञो मुखमुदीक्षन्ते पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह ।
युधिष्ठिरस्य भद्रं ते स सर्वाननुशास्ति च ॥४॥

Sanjaya said: "The Panchalas, along with the Pandavas, look to the face of King Yudhishthira. May prosperity be yours! And he instructs everyone."
पृथग्भूताः पाण्डवानां पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजाः ।
आयान्तमभिनन्दन्ति कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥५॥

The separate divisions of chariots belonging to the Pandavas and the Panchalas hail Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, as he approaches.
तमः सूर्यमिवोद्यन्तं कौन्तेयं दीप्ततेजसम् ।
पाञ्चालाः प्रतिनन्दन्ति तेजोराशिमिवोद्यतम् ॥६॥

6. tamaḥ sūryamivodyantaṁ kaunteyaṁ dīptatejasam ,

The Pañcālas rejoice at the son of Kunti (Kaunteya), whose blazing splendor is like the rising sun dispelling darkness, and who shines forth like a rising mass of radiance.
आ गोपालाविपालेभ्यो नन्दमानं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
पाञ्चालाः केकया मत्स्याः प्रतिनन्दन्ति पाण्डवम् ॥७॥

From cowherds even to shepherds, the Pañcālas, Kekayas, and Matsyas all rejoice in Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Pāṇḍu, who is delighting them.
ब्राह्मण्यो राजपुत्र्यश्च विशां दुहितरश्च याः ।
क्रीडन्त्योऽभिसमायान्ति पार्थं संनद्धमीक्षितुम् ॥८॥

8. brāhmaṇyo rājaputryaśca viśāṁ duhitaraśca yāḥ ,

Brahmin women, princesses, and also the daughters of the Vaiśyas, who are playing, all gather to see Arjuna (Pārtha), fully armed and ready.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
संजयाचक्ष्व केनास्मान्पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ।
धृष्टद्युम्नेन सेनान्या सोमकाः किंबला इव ॥९॥

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'O Saṃjaya, tell me, by whom were the Pāṇḍavas deployed against us? What strength did the Somakas, with Dhṛṣṭadyumna as their commander, possess?'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गावल्गणिस्तु तत्पृष्टः सभायां कुरुसंसदि ।
निःश्वस्य सुभृशं दीर्घं मुहुः संचिन्तयन्निव ।
तत्रानिमित्ततो दैवात्सूतं कश्मलमाविशत् ॥१०॥

10. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
gāvalgaṇistu tatpṛṣṭaḥ sabhāyāṁ kurusaṁsadi ,
niḥśvasya subhṛśaṁ dīrghaṁ muhuḥ saṁcintayanniva ,
tatrānimittato daivātsūtaṁ kaśmalamāviśat.

subhṛśam dīrgham muhuḥ saṃcintayan iva | tatra
animittataḥ daivāt sūtam kaśmalam āviśat
pṛṣṭaḥ sabhāyām kurusaṃsadi | niḥśvasya

Vaiśampāyana said: Gāvālgaṇi (Saṃjaya), having been questioned thus in the assembly of the Kurus, sighed very deeply repeatedly, as if lost in thought. Then, unexpectedly and by divine will (daiva), a great distress (kaśmala) overcame the charioteer (Saṃjaya).
तदाचचक्षे पुरुषः सभायां राजसंसदि ।
संजयोऽयं महाराज मूर्च्छितः पतितो भुवि ।
वाचं न सृजते कांचिद्धीनप्रज्ञोऽल्पचेतनः ॥११॥
संजयोऽयं महाराज मूर्च्छितः पतितो भुवि ।

11. tadācacakṣe puruṣaḥ sabhāyāṁ rājasaṁsadi ,
saṁjayo'yaṁ mahārāja mūrcchitaḥ patito bhuvi ,
vācaṁ na sṛjate kāṁciddhīnaprajño'lpacetanaḥ.
saṁjayo'yaṁ mahārāja mūrcchitaḥ patito bhuvi ,
vācaṁ na sṛjate kāṁciddhīnaprajño'lpacetanaḥ.

tadā acacakṣe puruṣaḥ sabhāyām
rājasaṃsadi | saṃjayaḥ ayam mahārāja
mūrcchitaḥ patitaḥ bhuvi | vācam na
sṛjate kāṃcit hīnaprajñaḥ alpacetanaḥ
rājasaṃsadi | saṃjayaḥ ayam mahārāja
mūrcchitaḥ patitaḥ bhuvi | vācam na
sṛjate kāṃcit hīnaprajñaḥ alpacetanaḥ

Then a person (puruṣa) in the royal assembly announced: "This Saṃjaya, O great king, has fainted and fallen to the ground. He utters no speech, his intellect is diminished, and he is barely conscious."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
अपश्यत्संजयो नूनं कुन्तीपुत्रान्महारथान् ।
तैरस्य पुरुषव्याघ्रैर्भृशमुद्वेजितं मनः ॥१२॥

12. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
apaśyatsaṁjayo nūnaṁ kuntīputrānmahārathān ,
tairasya puruṣavyāghrairbhṛśamudvejitaṁ manaḥ.

dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | apaśyat saṃjayaḥ nūnam kuntīputrān
mahārathān | taiḥ asya puruṣavyāghraiḥ bhṛśam udvejitam manaḥ
mahārathān | taiḥ asya puruṣavyāghraiḥ bhṛśam udvejitam manaḥ
12.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Saṃjaya must have surely seen the sons of Kuntī, those great charioteers. His mind has been greatly disturbed by those tiger-like men (puruṣa)."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
संजयश्चेतनां लब्ध्वा प्रत्याश्वस्येदमब्रवीत् ।
धृतराष्ट्रं महाराज सभायां कुरुसंसदि ॥१३॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca | saṃjayaḥ cetanām labdhvā pratyāśvasya
idam abravīt | dhṛtarāṣṭram mahārāja sabhāyām kurusaṃsadi

13.
Vaiśampāyana said: Saṃjaya, having regained consciousness and recovered, then said this to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, O great king, in the assembly of the Kurus.
दृष्टवानस्मि राजेन्द्र कुन्तीपुत्रान्महारथान् ।
मत्स्यराजगृहावासादवरोधेन कर्शितान् ।
शृणु यैर्हि महाराज पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥१४॥
मत्स्यराजगृहावासादवरोधेन कर्शितान् ।
शृणु यैर्हि महाराज पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥१४॥
14. dṛṣṭavānasmi rājendra kuntīputrānmahārathān ,
matsyarājagṛhāvāsādavarodhena karśitān ,
śṛṇu yairhi mahārāja pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.

14.
O King of kings, I have seen the sons of Kunti, those great charioteers, who were emaciated by their confinement and stay in the Matsya king's palace. Listen now, O great king, to those with whom the Pāṇḍavas engaged.
यो नैव रोषान्न भयान्न कामान्नार्थकारणात् ।
न हेतुवादाद्धर्मात्मा सत्यं जह्यात्कथंचन ॥१५॥

15. yo naiva roṣānna bhayānna kāmānnārthakāraṇāt ,
na hetuvādāddharmātmā satyaṁ jahyātkathaṁcana.

The one whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteousness would never abandon truth (satya) under any circumstances, whether due to anger, fear, desire, pursuit of wealth, or logical arguments.
यः प्रमाणं महाराज धर्मे धर्मभृतां वरः ।
अजातशत्रुणा तेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥१६॥

16. yaḥ pramāṇaṁ mahārāja dharme dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
ajātaśatruṇā tena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.

O great king, the Pāṇḍavas engaged with him, Ajātaśatru, who is the ultimate authority in matters of natural law (dharma) and the best among those who uphold natural law (dharma).
यस्य बाहुबले तुल्यः पृथिव्यां नास्ति कश्चन ।
यो वै सर्वान्महीपालान्वशे चक्रे धनुर्धरः ।
तेन वो भीमसेनेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥१७॥
यो वै सर्वान्महीपालान्वशे चक्रे धनुर्धरः ।
तेन वो भीमसेनेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत ॥१७॥
17. yasya bāhubale tulyaḥ pṛthivyāṁ nāsti kaścana ,
yo vai sarvānmahīpālānvaśe cakre dhanurdharaḥ ,
tena vo bhīmasenena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.
yo vai sarvānmahīpālānvaśe cakre dhanurdharaḥ ,
tena vo bhīmasenena pāṇḍavā abhyayuñjata.

yasya bāhubale tulyaḥ pṛthivyām na
asti kaścana yaḥ vai sarvān mahīpālān
vaśe cakre dhanurdharaḥ tena
vaḥ bhīmasenena pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata
asti kaścana yaḥ vai sarvān mahīpālān
vaśe cakre dhanurdharaḥ tena
vaḥ bhīmasenena pāṇḍavāḥ abhyayuñjata

With your Bhīmasena, the Pāṇḍavas engaged - he to whose arm-strength no one on earth is equal, and who, as a wielder of the bow, indeed brought all kings under his control.
निःसृतानां जतुगृहाद्धिडिम्बात्पुरुषादकात् ।
य एषामभवद्द्वीपः कुन्तीपुत्रो वृकोदरः ॥१८॥

18. niḥsṛtānāṁ jatugṛhāddhiḍimbātpuruṣādakāt ,
ya eṣāmabhavaddvīpaḥ kuntīputro vṛkodaraḥ.

Kuntī's son, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), became a refuge for them, those who had escaped from the house of lac and from Hiḍimba, the man-eater.
याज्ञसेनीमथो यत्र सिन्धुराजोऽपकृष्टवान् ।
तत्रैषामभवद्द्वीपः कुन्तीपुत्रो वृकोदरः ॥१९॥

19. yājñasenīmatho yatra sindhurājo'pakṛṣṭavān ,
tatraiṣāmabhavaddvīpaḥ kuntīputro vṛkodaraḥ.

Furthermore, when the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha) abducted Yājñasenī (Draupadī), Kuntī's son, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), became their refuge.
यश्च तान्संगतान्सर्वान्पाण्डवान्वारणावते ।
दह्यतो मोचयामास तेन वस्तेऽभ्ययुञ्जत ॥२०॥

20. yaśca tānsaṁgatānsarvānpāṇḍavānvāraṇāvate ,
dahyato mocayāmāsa tena vaste'bhyayuñjata.

yaḥ ca tān saṅgatān sarvān pāṇḍavān vāraṇāvate
dahyataḥ mocayāmāsa tena vaḥ te abhyayuñjata

And he who rescued all those Pāṇḍavas, assembled in Vāraṇāvata, from being burnt - it was because of him (Bhīma) that they (the Kauravas) assailed them (the Pāṇḍavas).
कृष्णायाश्चरता प्रीतिं येन क्रोधवशा हताः ।
प्रविश्य विषमं घोरं पर्वतं गन्धमादनम् ॥२१॥

21. kṛṣṇāyāścaratā prītiṁ yena krodhavaśā hatāḥ ,
praviśya viṣamaṁ ghoraṁ parvataṁ gandhamādanam.

And by him (Bhīma), who acted to fulfill Kṛṣṇā's (Draupadī's) desire, the wrathful ones were killed, after he had entered the dreadful and formidable Gandhamādana mountain.

This hero, accompanied by Kṛṣṇa, who formerly, having displayed great valor for the satisfaction of Agni, conquered the fighting Purandara (Indra).

This one who, by fighting, directly pleased Mahādeva (Śiva) himself, Giriśa, the trident-wielder, the God of gods, and the husband of Umā.

And by that bow-wielder who brought all the protectors of the worlds under his control, the Pandavas engaged you in battle for victory.

Nakula, the warrior who fought wonderfully, was stationed there; he was the one who brought the western region, teeming with groups of foreign tribes, under his control.

The Pāṇḍavas engaged against you (plural) with that Sahadeva, who was their youngest, a hero among men, and the one who brought joy to Mādrī.

O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), formerly, that virtuous daughter of Kāśi (Amba) performed a terrible austerity (tapas), desiring Bhīṣma's death even after she passed away.

O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), the daughter of Pāñcāla was born, and by destiny, that same person (Śikhaṇḍī) became a man again. He knew the merits and demerits of both women and men.

That Pāñcāla prince, who was fierce in battle and attacked the Kaliṅgas - with that same Śikhaṇḍī, who was skilled in weaponry, the Kurus engaged against you (plural).

It is said that the Pāṇḍavas engaged in battle with that fierce great bowman whom a yakṣa had transformed into a man (puruṣa) at the time of Bhīṣma's death.

The five Kekaya princes, who were great bowmen and valiant heroes with well-polished armors, also engaged in battle with them (the Pāṇḍavas' other allies) against your (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) forces.
यो दीर्घबाहुः क्षिप्रास्त्रो धृतिमान्सत्यविक्रमः ।
तेन वो वृष्णिवीरेण युयुधानेन संगरः ॥३६॥

With Yuyudhāna, that hero of the Vṛṣṇis who is long-armed, swift in wielding weapons, resolute, and truly valorous, there was battle against your (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) forces.

The Pāṇḍavas engaged in battle with King Virāṭa, who, in due course, had been a refuge for the great-souled (mahātman) Pāṇḍavas.

That king, the lord of Kashi, a great charioteer in Varanasi, became a warrior for them. With him, they engaged you (in battle).

The Pāṇḍavas engaged (you) in battle with Draupadī's invincible (durjaya), great-souled (mahātman) sons, whose touch was like that of venomous snakes (āśīviṣasamasparśa).

With that Abhimanyu, who was similar to Kṛṣṇa in valor (vīrya) and equal to Yudhiṣṭhira in self-control (dama), the Pāṇḍavas engaged (you) in battle (saṅkhye).

And with that king of Cedis (Cedirāja), Dhṛṣṭaketu, who was unequaled (apratima) in valor (vīrya), greatly famous (mahāyaśas), a great charioteer (mahāratha), the son of Śiśupāla (Śaiśupāli), and unbearable (dussaha) when enraged (kruddha) in battle (samare), the Pāṇḍavas engaged you (in battle).

He who is the support of the Pāṇḍavas, just as Vāsava (Indra) is the support of the gods, with that Vāsudeva, the Pāṇḍavas allied themselves.

Similarly, Śarabha, brother of the Cedi ruler, O best of Bharatas, together with Karakarṣa and the people of Vasta, allied themselves with those two (Pāṇḍavas and Vāsudeva).

Jārāsandhi, Sahadeva, and Jayatsena - these two (Sahadeva and Jayatsena), and Drupada, the highly energetic one, surrounded by a great army, stood ready to fight, having abandoned his life (ātman) for the Pāṇḍavas' cause.

These and many other kings from the eastern and northern regions, numbering in the hundreds, by relying on whom the king of righteousness (dharma), Yudhiṣṭhira, stood firm.
