जनमेजय उवाच ।
किं तद्गुह्यं न चाख्यातं कर्णायेहोष्णरश्मिना ।
कीदृशे कुण्डले ते च कवचं चैव कीदृशम् ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
kiṁ tadguhyaṁ na cākhyātaṁ karṇāyehoṣṇaraśminā ,
kīdṛśe kuṇḍale te ca kavacaṁ caiva kīdṛśam.
1. janamejayaḥ uvāca kim tat guhyam na ca ākhyātam karṇāya
iha uṣṇaraśminā kīdṛśe kuṇḍale te ca kavacam ca eva kīdṛśam
1. Janamejaya asked: 'What was that secret that the hot-rayed Sun did not disclose to Karṇa in this context? And what kind were those earrings, and what kind was that armor?'
कुतश्च कवचं तस्य कुण्डले चैव सत्तम ।
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं तन्मे ब्रूहि तपोधन ॥२॥
2. kutaśca kavacaṁ tasya kuṇḍale caiva sattama ,
etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotuṁ tanme brūhi tapodhana.
2. kutaḥ ca kavacam tasya kuṇḍale ca eva sattama
etat icchāmi aham śrotum tat me brūhi tapodhana
2. O best among the virtuous, from where did his armor and earrings come? I wish to hear this; therefore, please tell me, O ascetic whose wealth is austerity (tapas).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अयं राजन्ब्रवीम्येतद्यत्तद्गुह्यं विभावसोः ।
यादृशे कुण्डले चैव कवचं चैव यादृशम् ॥३॥
3. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ayaṁ rājanbravīmyetadyattadguhyaṁ vibhāvasoḥ ,
yādṛśe kuṇḍale caiva kavacaṁ caiva yādṛśam.
3. vaiśampāyana uvāca ayam rājan bravīmi etat yat tat guhyam
vibhāvasoḥ yādṛśe kuṇḍale ca eva kavacam ca eva yādṛśam
3. Vaiśampāyana said: 'O King, I will now reveal to you this secret of Vibhāvasu (the Sun god): the nature of those earrings and the nature of that armor.'
कुन्तिभोजं पुरा राजन्ब्राह्मणः समुपस्थितः ।
तिग्मतेजा महाप्रांशुः श्मश्रुदण्डजटाधरः ॥४॥
4. kuntibhojaṁ purā rājanbrāhmaṇaḥ samupasthitaḥ ,
tigmatejā mahāprāṁśuḥ śmaśrudaṇḍajaṭādharaḥ.
4. kuntibhojam purā rājan brāhmaṇaḥ samupasthitaḥ
tigmatejāḥ mahāprāṃśuḥ śmaśrudaṇḍajaṭādharaḥ
4. O King, long ago a brāhmin approached Kuntibhoja. He was fiercely radiant, exceptionally tall, and bore a staff along with matted locks.
दर्शनीयोऽनवद्याङ्गस्तेजसा प्रज्वलन्निव ।
मधुपिङ्गो मधुरवाक्तपःस्वाध्यायभूषणः ॥५॥
5. darśanīyo'navadyāṅgastejasā prajvalanniva ,
madhupiṅgo madhuravāktapaḥsvādhyāyabhūṣaṇaḥ.
5. darśanīyaḥ anavadyāṅgaḥ tejasā prajvalan iva
madhupiṅgaḥ madhuravāk tapaḥsvādhyāyabhūṣaṇaḥ
5. He was handsome and had faultless limbs, appearing as if blazing with radiance. He had a honey-brown complexion, a sweet voice, and was adorned by his severe austerities (tapas) and scriptural study (svādhyāya).
स राजानं कुन्तिभोजमब्रवीत्सुमहातपाः ।
भिक्षामिच्छाम्यहं भोक्तुं तव गेहे विमत्सर ॥६॥
6. sa rājānaṁ kuntibhojamabravītsumahātapāḥ ,
bhikṣāmicchāmyahaṁ bhoktuṁ tava gehe vimatsara.
6. sa rājānaṃ kuntibhojam abravīt sumahātapāḥ
bhikṣām icchāmi aham bhoktum tava gehe vimatsara
6. That greatly ascetic (tapas) sage said to King Kuntibhoja, "O king, free from envy, I wish to eat alms in your house."
न मे व्यलीकं कर्तव्यं त्वया वा तव चानुगैः ।
एवं वत्स्यामि ते गेहे यदि ते रोचतेऽनघ ॥७॥
7. na me vyalīkaṁ kartavyaṁ tvayā vā tava cānugaiḥ ,
evaṁ vatsyāmi te gehe yadi te rocate'nagha.
7. na me vyalīkam kartavyam tvayā vā tava ca anugaiḥ
evam vatsyāmi te gehe yadi te rocate anagha
7. No offense should be committed against me by you or your attendants. I will live in your house in this manner, O sinless one, if it pleases you.
यथाकामं च गच्छेयमागच्छेयं तथैव च ।
शय्यासने च मे राजन्नापराध्येत कश्चन ॥८॥
8. yathākāmaṁ ca gaccheyamāgaccheyaṁ tathaiva ca ,
śayyāsane ca me rājannāparādhyeta kaścana.
8. yathākāmam ca gaccheyam āgaccheyam tathā eva ca
śayyāsane ca me rājan na aparādhyeta kaścana
8. And I should be able to come and go as I please. And, O King, let no one disrespect my bed and seat.
तमब्रवीत्कुन्तिभोजः प्रीतियुक्तमिदं वचः ।
एवमस्तु परं चेति पुनश्चैनमथाब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. tamabravītkuntibhojaḥ prītiyuktamidaṁ vacaḥ ,
evamastu paraṁ ceti punaścainamathābravīt.
9. tam abravīt kuntibhojaḥ prītiyuktam idam vacaḥ
evam astu param ca iti punaḥ ca enam atha abravīt
9. King Kuntibhoja, filled with affection, said these words to him: "So be it." And then he spoke to him again.
मम कन्या महाब्रह्मन्पृथा नाम यशस्विनी ।
शीलवृत्तान्विता साध्वी नियता न च मानिनी ॥१०॥
10. mama kanyā mahābrahmanpṛthā nāma yaśasvinī ,
śīlavṛttānvitā sādhvī niyatā na ca māninī.
10. mama kanyā mahābrahman pṛthā nāma yaśasvinī
śīlavṛttānvitā sādhvī niyatā na ca māninī
10. O great Brahmin, my famous daughter named Pṛthā is virtuous, disciplined, endowed with good character and conduct, and not proud.
उपस्थास्यति सा त्वां वै पूजयानवमन्य च ।
तस्याश्च शीलवृत्तेन तुष्टिं समुपयास्यसि ॥११॥
11. upasthāsyati sā tvāṁ vai pūjayānavamanya ca ,
tasyāśca śīlavṛttena tuṣṭiṁ samupayāsyasi.
11. upasthāsyati sā tvām vai pūjayā anavamanya ca
tasyāḥ ca śīlavṛttena tuṣṭim samupayāsyasi
11. She will indeed attend to you, honoring you and never disrespecting. And through her good character and conduct, you will attain satisfaction.
एवमुक्त्वा तु तं विप्रमभिपूज्य यथाविधि ।
उवाच कन्यामभ्येत्य पृथां पृथुललोचनाम् ॥१२॥
12. evamuktvā tu taṁ vipramabhipūjya yathāvidhi ,
uvāca kanyāmabhyetya pṛthāṁ pṛthulalocanām.
12. evam uktvā tu tam vipram abhipūjya yathāvidhi
uvāca kanyām abhyetya pṛthām pṛthulalocanām
12. Having thus spoken and honored that Brahmin according to the prescribed rules, he then approached his wide-eyed daughter, Pṛthā, and spoke.
अयं वत्से महाभागो ब्राह्मणो वस्तुमिच्छति ।
मम गेहे मया चास्य तथेत्येवं प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥१३॥
13. ayaṁ vatse mahābhāgo brāhmaṇo vastumicchati ,
mama gehe mayā cāsya tathetyevaṁ pratiśrutam.
13. ayam vatse mahābhāgaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ vastum icchati
mama gehe mayā ca asya tathā iti evam pratiśrutam
13. O dear child, this revered Brahmin desires to reside in my home. And to him, I have promised, saying, 'So be it!'
त्वयि वत्से पराश्वस्य ब्राह्मणस्याभिराधनम् ।
तन्मे वाक्यं न मिथ्या त्वं कर्तुमर्हसि कर्हिचित् ॥१४॥
14. tvayi vatse parāśvasya brāhmaṇasyābhirādhanam ,
tanme vākyaṁ na mithyā tvaṁ kartumarhasi karhicit.
14. tvayi vatse parāśvasya brāhmaṇasya abhirādhanam
tat me vākyam na mithyā tvam kartum arhasi karhicit
14. O child, the propitiation of a Brahmin who has taken refuge in you - that word of mine, you should never make false.
अयं तपस्वी भगवान्स्वाध्यायनियतो द्विजः ।
यद्यद्ब्रूयान्महातेजास्तत्तद्देयममत्सरात् ॥१५॥
15. ayaṁ tapasvī bhagavānsvādhyāyaniyato dvijaḥ ,
yadyadbrūyānmahātejāstattaddeyamamatsarāt.
15. ayam tapasvī bhagavān svādhyāya-niyataḥ dvijaḥ
yat yat brūyāt mahā-tejāḥ tat tat deyam amatsarāt
15. Whatever that greatly radiant one, this venerable ascetic (tapasvī), a Brahmin (dvija) devoted to self-study, may say, that should be given without envy.
ब्राह्मणा हि परं तेजो ब्राह्मणा हि परं तपः ।
ब्राह्मणानां नमस्कारैः सूर्यो दिवि विराजते ॥१६॥
16. brāhmaṇā hi paraṁ tejo brāhmaṇā hi paraṁ tapaḥ ,
brāhmaṇānāṁ namaskāraiḥ sūryo divi virājate.
16. brāhmaṇā hi param tejaḥ brāhmaṇā hi param tapaḥ
brāhmaṇānām namaskāraiḥ sūryaḥ divi virājate
16. Indeed, Brahmins are the supreme radiance, and Brahmins are the supreme asceticism (tapas). Through salutations to Brahmins, the sun shines brightly in the sky.
अमानयन्हि मानार्हान्वातापिश्च महासुरः ।
निहतो ब्रह्मदण्डेन तालजङ्घस्तथैव च ॥१७॥
17. amānayanhi mānārhānvātāpiśca mahāsuraḥ ,
nihato brahmadaṇḍena tālajaṅghastathaiva ca.
17. amānayan hi māna-arhān vātāpiḥ ca mahā-asuraḥ
nihataḥ brahma-daṇḍena tāla-jaṅghaḥ tathā eva ca
17. Indeed, by not honoring those worthy of honor, the great demon (mahāsura) Vātāpi was killed by the Brahmins' curse (brahma-daṇḍa), and likewise, Tālajaṅgha (was also killed).
सोऽयं वत्से महाभार आहितस्त्वयि सांप्रतम् ।
त्वं सदा नियता कुर्या ब्राह्मणस्याभिराधनम् ॥१८॥
18. so'yaṁ vatse mahābhāra āhitastvayi sāṁpratam ,
tvaṁ sadā niyatā kuryā brāhmaṇasyābhirādhanam.
18. saḥ ayam vatse mahābhāraḥ āhitaḥ tvayi sāmpratam
tvam sadā niyatā kuryāḥ brāhmaṇasya abhirādhanam
18. O dear child, this great burden is now placed upon you. You should always, with discipline, perform the respectful service of the brahmins.
जानामि प्रणिधानं ते बाल्यात्प्रभृति नन्दिनि ।
ब्राह्मणेष्विह सर्वेषु गुरुबन्धुषु चैव ह ॥१९॥
19. jānāmi praṇidhānaṁ te bālyātprabhṛti nandini ,
brāhmaṇeṣviha sarveṣu gurubandhuṣu caiva ha.
19. jānāmi praṇidhānam te bālyāt prabhṛti nandini
brāhmaṇeṣu iha sarveṣu gurubandhuṣu ca eva ha
19. O Nandini, I know your diligent devotion (praṇidhāna) from childhood onwards, towards all brahmins here, and indeed towards preceptors (guru) and relatives.
तथा प्रेष्येषु सर्वेषु मित्रसंबन्धिमातृषु ।
मयि चैव यथावत्त्वं सर्वमादृत्य वर्तसे ॥२०॥
20. tathā preṣyeṣu sarveṣu mitrasaṁbandhimātṛṣu ,
mayi caiva yathāvattvaṁ sarvamādṛtya vartase.
20. tathā preṣyeṣu sarveṣu mitrasambandhimātṛṣu
mayi ca eva yathāvat tvam sarvam ādṛtya vartase
20. Similarly, you behave properly towards all servants, friends, relatives, and mothers, and indeed towards me, showing respect (ādṛtya) to all.
न ह्यतुष्टो जनोऽस्तीह पुरे चान्तःपुरे च ते ।
सम्यग्वृत्त्यानवद्याङ्गि तव भृत्यजनेष्वपि ॥२१॥
21. na hyatuṣṭo jano'stīha pure cāntaḥpure ca te ,
samyagvṛttyānavadyāṅgi tava bhṛtyajaneṣvapi.
21. na hi atuṣṭaḥ janaḥ asti iha pure ca antaḥpure ca
te samyakvṛttyā anavadyāṅgi tava bhṛtyajaneṣu api
21. O you of faultless limbs (anavadyāṅgi), there is certainly no one dissatisfied here, neither in your city nor in your inner apartment (antaḥpura), nor even among your servants, all due to your proper conduct.
संदेष्टव्यां तु मन्ये त्वां द्विजातिं कोपनं प्रति ।
पृथे बालेति कृत्वा वै सुता चासि ममेति च ॥२२॥
22. saṁdeṣṭavyāṁ tu manye tvāṁ dvijātiṁ kopanaṁ prati ,
pṛthe bāleti kṛtvā vai sutā cāsi mameti ca.
22. saṃdeṣṭavyām tu manye tvām dvijātim kopanam prati
pṛthe bāla iti kṛtvā vai sutā ca asi mama iti ca
22. O Pṛthā, I consider you to be one who should be instructed concerning that angry twice-born (dvijāti). This is because, indeed, you are a child, and you are my daughter.
वृष्णीनां त्वं कुले जाता शूरस्य दयिता सुता ।
दत्ता प्रीतिमता मह्यं पित्रा बाला पुरा स्वयम् ॥२३॥
23. vṛṣṇīnāṁ tvaṁ kule jātā śūrasya dayitā sutā ,
dattā prītimatā mahyaṁ pitrā bālā purā svayam.
23. vṛṣṇīnām tvam kule jātā śūrasya dayitā sutā
dattā prītimatā mahyam pitrā bālā purā svayam
23. You were born in the Vṛṣṇi clan, the beloved daughter of Śūra. Your fond father himself formerly gave you, a young girl, to me.
वसुदेवस्य भगिनी सुतानां प्रवरा मम ।
अग्र्यमग्रे प्रतिज्ञाय तेनासि दुहिता मम ॥२४॥
24. vasudevasya bhaginī sutānāṁ pravarā mama ,
agryamagre pratijñāya tenāsi duhitā mama.
24. vasudevasya bhaginī sutānām pravarā mama
agryam agre pratijñāya tena asi duhitā mama
24. You are Vasudeva's sister and the foremost among my daughters. Having formerly promised to adopt the firstborn, you are therefore my daughter.
तादृशे हि कुले जाता कुले चैव विवर्धिता ।
सुखात्सुखमनुप्राप्ता ह्रदाद्ध्रदमिवागता ॥२५॥
25. tādṛśe hi kule jātā kule caiva vivardhitā ,
sukhātsukhamanuprāptā hradāddhradamivāgatā.
25. tādṛśe hi kule jātā kule ca eva vivardhitā
sukhāt sukham anuprāptā hradāt hradam iva āgatā
25. Indeed, born in such a family/clan and raised within that very clan, she progressed from one state of happiness to another, just as one moves from one deep pool to another.
दौष्कुलेया विशेषेण कथंचित्प्रग्रहं गताः ।
बालभावाद्विकुर्वन्ति प्रायशः प्रमदाः शुभे ॥२६॥
26. dauṣkuleyā viśeṣeṇa kathaṁcitpragrahaṁ gatāḥ ,
bālabhāvādvikurvanti prāyaśaḥ pramadāḥ śubhe.
26. dauṣkuleyāḥ viśeṣeṇa kathaṃcit pragraham gatāḥ
bālabhāvāt vikurvanti prāyaśaḥ pramadāḥ śubhe
26. O auspicious one, women, particularly those from low families who have somehow gained freedom, usually misbehave due to their inherent immaturity.
पृथे राजकुले जन्म रूपं चाद्भुतदर्शनम् ।
तेन तेनासि संपन्ना समुपेता च भामिनी ॥२७॥
27. pṛthe rājakule janma rūpaṁ cādbhutadarśanam ,
tena tenāsi saṁpannā samupetā ca bhāminī.
27. pṛthe rājakule janma rūpam ca adbhutadarśanam
tena tena asi sampannā samupetā ca bhāminī
27. O Pṛthā, you have been born into a royal family and possess a form of wondrous beauty. O splendid lady, by these very attributes, you are truly well-endowed and complete.
सा त्वं दर्पं परित्यज्य दम्भं मानं च भामिनि ।
आराध्य वरदं विप्रं श्रेयसा योक्ष्यसे पृथे ॥२८॥
28. sā tvaṁ darpaṁ parityajya dambhaṁ mānaṁ ca bhāmini ,
ārādhya varadaṁ vipraṁ śreyasā yokṣyase pṛthe.
28. sā tvam darpam parityajya dambham mānam ca bhāmini
ārādhya varadam vipram śreyasā yokṣyase pṛthe
28. Therefore, O splendid lady, having abandoned pride, hypocrisy, and ego, and having propitiated the boon-granting Brahmin, you will be united with prosperity, O Pṛthā.
एवं प्राप्स्यसि कल्याणि कल्याणमनघे ध्रुवम् ।
कोपिते तु द्विजश्रेष्ठे कृत्स्नं दह्येत मे कुलम् ॥२९॥
29. evaṁ prāpsyasi kalyāṇi kalyāṇamanaghe dhruvam ,
kopite tu dvijaśreṣṭhe kṛtsnaṁ dahyeta me kulam.
29. evam prāpsyasi kalyāṇi kalyāṇam anaghe dhruvam
kopite tu dvijaśreṣṭhe kṛtsnam dahyeta me kulam
29. Thus, O auspicious and sinless one, you will surely attain prosperity. But if the foremost Brahmin were to be angered, my entire family (kula) would be destroyed.
