धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
यदब्रूतां महात्मानौ वासुदेवधनंजयौ ।
तन्मे ब्रूहि महाप्राज्ञ शुश्रूषे वचनं तव ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yadabrūtāṁ mahātmānau vāsudevadhanaṁjayau ,
tanme brūhi mahāprājña śuśrūṣe vacanaṁ tava.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O greatly wise one, relate to me what the two great souls (mahātmanau), Vāsudeva and Dhanaṃjaya, conversed about. I desire to hear your words.
संजय उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्यथा दृष्टौ मया कृष्णधनंजयौ ।
ऊचतुश्चापि यद्वीरौ तत्ते वक्ष्यामि भारत ॥२॥
2. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājanyathā dṛṣṭau mayā kṛṣṇadhanaṁjayau ,
ūcatuścāpi yadvīrau tatte vakṣyāmi bhārata.
2. sañjaya uvāca śṛṇu rājan yathā dṛṣṭau mayā kṛṣṇadhanaṃjayau
ūcatuḥ ca api yat vīrau tat te vakṣyāmi bhārata
2. Sañjaya said: Listen, O King! I will narrate to you, O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), exactly how Kṛṣṇa and Dhanaṃjaya were observed by me, and what the two heroes spoke.
पादाङ्गुलीरभिप्रेक्षन्प्रयतोऽहं कृताञ्जलिः ।
शुद्धान्तं प्राविशं राजन्नाख्यातुं नरदेवयोः ॥३॥
3. pādāṅgulīrabhiprekṣanprayato'haṁ kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
śuddhāntaṁ prāviśaṁ rājannākhyātuṁ naradevayoḥ.
3. pādāṅgulīḥ abhiprekṣan prayataḥ aham kṛtāñjaliḥ
śuddhāntam prāviśam rājan ākhyātum naradevayoḥ
3. O King, I, being self-controlled and with folded hands, entered the inner apartment, my gaze fixed on my toes, to deliver news concerning the two great lords.
नैवाभिमन्युर्न यमौ तं देशमभियान्ति वै ।
यत्र कृष्णौ च कृष्णा च सत्यभामा च भामिनी ॥४॥
4. naivābhimanyurna yamau taṁ deśamabhiyānti vai ,
yatra kṛṣṇau ca kṛṣṇā ca satyabhāmā ca bhāminī.
4. na eva abhimanyuḥ na yamau tam deśam abhiyānti
vai yatra kṛṣṇau ca kṛṣṇā ca satyabhāmā ca bhāminī
4. Indeed, neither Abhimanyu nor the twin brothers (Nakula and Sahadeva) approach that place where the two Krishnas (Krishna and Arjuna), Draupadi (Krishnaa), and the beautiful Satyabhama are present.
उभौ मध्वासवक्षीबावुभौ चन्दनरूषितौ ।
स्रग्विणौ वरवस्त्रौ तौ दिव्याभरणभूषितौ ॥५॥
5. ubhau madhvāsavakṣībāvubhau candanarūṣitau ,
sragviṇau varavastrau tau divyābharaṇabhūṣitau.

5. Both were intoxicated by honey-wine and smeared with sandalwood paste. They wore garlands and fine garments, and were adorned with divine ornaments.
नैकरत्नविचित्रं तु काञ्चनं महदासनम् ।
विविधास्तरणास्तीर्णं यत्रासातामरिंदमौ ॥६॥
6. naikaratnavicitraṁ tu kāñcanaṁ mahadāsanam ,
vividhāstaraṇāstīrṇaṁ yatrāsātāmariṁdamau.
6. naikaratnavicitram tu kāñcanam mahat āsanam
vividhāstaraṇāstīrṇam yatra āsātām arimdamau
6. Indeed, a great golden throne, variegated with many jewels and spread with various coverings, was where the two subduers of enemies were seated.
अर्जुनोत्सङ्गगौ पादौ केशवस्योपलक्षये ।
अर्जुनस्य च कृष्णायां सत्यायां च महात्मनः ॥७॥
7. arjunotsaṅgagau pādau keśavasyopalakṣaye ,
arjunasya ca kṛṣṇāyāṁ satyāyāṁ ca mahātmanaḥ.
7. arjuna utsaṅgagau pādau keśavasya upalakṣaye
arjunasya ca kṛṣṇāyāṃ satyāyāṃ ca mahātmanaḥ
7. I perceive Keśava's two feet resting on Arjuna's lap, and the feet of the great-souled Arjuna (resting) in the presence of Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) and Satyā.
काञ्चनं पादपीठं तु पार्थो मे प्रादिशत्तदा ।
तदहं पाणिना स्पृष्ट्वा ततो भूमावुपाविशम् ॥८॥
8. kāñcanaṁ pādapīṭhaṁ tu pārtho me prādiśattadā ,
tadahaṁ pāṇinā spṛṣṭvā tato bhūmāvupāviśam.
8. kāñcanam pādapīṭham tu pārthaḥ me prādiśat tadā
tat aham pāṇinā spṛṣṭvā tataḥ bhūmau upāviśam
8. Pārtha (Arjuna) indeed offered that golden footstool to me then. Having touched it with my hand, I then sat down on the ground.
ऊर्ध्वरेखतलौ पादौ पार्थस्य शुभलक्षणौ ।
पादपीठादपहृतौ तत्रापश्यमहं शुभौ ॥९॥
9. ūrdhvarekhatalau pādau pārthasya śubhalakṣaṇau ,
pādapīṭhādapahṛtau tatrāpaśyamahaṁ śubhau.
9. ūrdhvarekhatalau pādau pārthasya śubhalakṣaṇau
pādapīṭhāt apahṛtau tatra apaśyam aham śubhāu
9. There, I saw Pārtha's (Arjuna's) two auspicious feet, beautifully marked on their soles with upward lines, and removed from the footstool.
श्यामौ बृहन्तौ तरुणौ शालस्कन्धाविवोद्गतौ ।
एकासनगतौ दृष्ट्वा भयं मां महदाविशत् ॥१०॥
10. śyāmau bṛhantau taruṇau śālaskandhāvivodgatau ,
ekāsanagatau dṛṣṭvā bhayaṁ māṁ mahadāviśat.
10. śyāmau bṛhantau taruṇau śālaskandhau iva udgatau
ekāsanagatau dṛṣṭvā bhayam mām mahat āviśat
10. Having seen those two, dark-complexioned, mighty, young, risen like śāla tree trunks, and seated on one seat, great fear entered me.
इन्द्रविष्णुसमावेतौ मन्दात्मा नावबुध्यते ।
संश्रयाद्द्रोणभीष्माभ्यां कर्णस्य च विकत्थनात् ॥११॥
11. indraviṣṇusamāvetau mandātmā nāvabudhyate ,
saṁśrayāddroṇabhīṣmābhyāṁ karṇasya ca vikatthanāt.
11. indraviṣṇusamāvetau mandātmā na avabudhyate
saṃśrayāt droṇabhīṣmābhyām karṇasya ca vikatthāt
11. The dull-minded one does not comprehend these two, who are like Indra and Vishnu combined, due to his reliance on Drona and Bhishma, and because of Karna's boasting.
निदेशस्थाविमौ यस्य मानसस्तस्य सेत्स्यते ।
संकल्पो धर्मराजस्य निश्चयो मे तदाभवत् ॥१२॥
12. nideśasthāvimau yasya mānasastasya setsyate ,
saṁkalpo dharmarājasya niścayo me tadābhavat.
12. nideśasthau imau yasya mānasaḥ tasya setsyate
saṅkalpaḥ dharmarājasya niścayaḥ me tadā abhavat
12. For whose command these two (Arjuna and Krishna) are ready to abide, the mental resolve (saṅkalpa) of that king of dharma (dharma-rāja) will certainly be fulfilled. This became my firm conviction (niścaya) at that time.
सत्कृतश्चान्नपानाभ्यामाच्छन्नो लब्धसत्क्रियः ।
अञ्जलिं मूर्ध्नि संधाय तौ संदेशमचोदयम् ॥१३॥
13. satkṛtaścānnapānābhyāmācchanno labdhasatkriyaḥ ,
añjaliṁ mūrdhni saṁdhāya tau saṁdeśamacodayam.
13. satkṛtaḥ ca annapānābhyām ācchannaḥ labdhasatkriyaḥ
añjalim mūrdhni saṃdhāya tau saṃdeśam acodayam
13. After being honored with food and drink, well-clothed, and having received kind hospitality, I placed my hands together in reverence (añjali) on my head and addressed those two (Krishna and Arjuna) with the message.
धनुर्बाणोचितेनैकपाणिना शुभलक्षणम् ।
पादमानमयन्पार्थः केशवं समचोदयत् ॥१४॥
14. dhanurbāṇocitenaikapāṇinā śubhalakṣaṇam ,
pādamānamayanpārthaḥ keśavaṁ samacodayat.
14. dhanurbāṇocitena ekapāṇinā śubhalakṣaṇam
pādam ānamayan pārthaḥ keśavam samacodayat
14. Arjuna (Pārtha), with one hand (ekapāṇinā) suited for the bow and arrow (dhanurbāṇocitena), bowed at the auspicious foot (śubhalakṣaṇam pādam) [of Kṛṣṇa], and then addressed Kṛṣṇa (Keśava).
इन्द्रकेतुरिवोत्थाय सर्वाभरणभूषितः ।
इन्द्रवीर्योपमः कृष्णः संविष्टो माभ्यभाषत ॥१५॥
15. indraketurivotthāya sarvābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ ,
indravīryopamaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ saṁviṣṭo mābhyabhāṣata.
15. indraketuḥ iva utthāya sarvābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ
indravīryopamaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ saṃviṣṭaḥ mā abhyabhāṣata
15. Krishna, having risen like Indra's banner, adorned with all ornaments, and whose prowess was comparable to Indra's, sat down and addressed me.
वाचं स वदतां श्रेष्ठो ह्लादिनीं वचनक्षमाम् ।
त्रासनीं धार्तराष्ट्राणां मृदुपूर्वां सुदारुणाम् ॥१६॥
16. vācaṁ sa vadatāṁ śreṣṭho hlādinīṁ vacanakṣamām ,
trāsanīṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ mṛdupūrvāṁ sudāruṇām.
16. vācam sa vadataṃ śreṣṭhaḥ hlādinīm vacanakṣamām
trāsanīm dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām mṛdupūrvām sudāruṇām
16. He, the best of speakers, uttered a delightful and well-articulated speech, which would be terrifying to the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, gentle in its beginning but exceedingly harsh in its essence.
वाचं तां वचनार्हस्य शिक्षाक्षरसमन्विताम् ।
अश्रौषमहमिष्टार्थां पश्चाद्धृदयशोषिणीम् ॥१७॥
17. vācaṁ tāṁ vacanārhasya śikṣākṣarasamanvitām ,
aśrauṣamahamiṣṭārthāṁ paścāddhṛdayaśoṣiṇīm.
17. vācam tām vacanārhasya śikṣākṣarasamanvitām
aśrauṣam aham iṣṭārthām paścāt hṛdayaśoṣiṇīm
17. I heard that speech, uttered by one worthy of speaking, which was complete with well-pronounced syllables and had a desirable purpose, but which later withered the heart.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
संजयेदं वचो ब्रूया धृतराष्ट्रं मनीषिणम् ।
शृण्वतः कुरुमुख्यस्य द्रोणस्यापि च शृण्वतः ॥१८॥
18. vāsudeva uvāca ,
saṁjayedaṁ vaco brūyā dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ manīṣiṇam ,
śṛṇvataḥ kurumukhyasya droṇasyāpi ca śṛṇvataḥ.
18. vāsudevaḥ uvāca saṃjaya idam vacaḥ brūyāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭram
manīṣiṇam śṛṇvataḥ kurumukhyasya droṇasya api ca śṛṇvataḥ
18. Vāsudeva said: 'O Sañjaya, convey this message to the wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra, while the chief of the Kurus listens, and Droṇa also listens.'
यजध्वं विपुलैर्यज्ञैर्विप्रेभ्यो दत्त दक्षिणाः ।
पुत्रैर्दारैश्च मोदध्वं महद्वो भयमागतम् ॥१९॥
19. yajadhvaṁ vipulairyajñairviprebhyo datta dakṣiṇāḥ ,
putrairdāraiśca modadhvaṁ mahadvo bhayamāgatam.
19. yajadhvaṃ vipulaiḥ yajñaiḥ viprebhyaḥ datta dakṣiṇāḥ
putraiḥ dāraiḥ ca modadhvaṃ mahat vaḥ bhayam āgatam
19. Perform extensive Vedic rituals (yajña) and give gifts (dakṣiṇā) to the brahmins (vipra). Rejoice with your sons and wives, for a great danger (bhayam) has indeed arrived for you.
अर्थांस्त्यजत पात्रेभ्यः सुतान्प्राप्नुत कामजान् ।
प्रियं प्रियेभ्यश्चरत राजा हि त्वरते जये ॥२०॥
20. arthāṁstyajata pātrebhyaḥ sutānprāpnuta kāmajān ,
priyaṁ priyebhyaścarata rājā hi tvarate jaye.
20. arthān tyajata pātrebhyaḥ sutān prāpnuta kāmajān
priyam priyebhyaḥ carata rājā hi tvarate jaye
20. Distribute your wealth (artha) to deserving recipients and obtain desired sons. Act in a pleasing manner towards your loved ones, for the king indeed hastens towards victory.
ऋणमेतत्प्रवृद्धं मे हृदयान्नापसर्पति ।
यद्गोविन्देति चुक्रोश कृष्णा मां दूरवासिनम् ॥२१॥
21. ṛṇametatpravṛddhaṁ me hṛdayānnāpasarpati ,
yadgovindeti cukrośa kṛṣṇā māṁ dūravāsinam.
21. ṛṇam etat pravṛddham me hṛdayāt na apasarpati
yat govinda iti cukrośa kṛṣṇā mām dūravāsinam
21. This greatly increased debt (ṛṇa) of mine does not depart from my heart, because Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi) cried out "O Govinda!" to me, who was dwelling far away.
तेजोमयं दुराधर्षं गाण्डीवं यस्य कार्मुकम् ।
मद्द्वितीयेन तेनेह वैरं वः सव्यसाचिना ॥२२॥
22. tejomayaṁ durādharṣaṁ gāṇḍīvaṁ yasya kārmukam ,
maddvitīyena teneha vairaṁ vaḥ savyasācinā.
22. tejomayam durādharṣam gāṇḍīvam yasya kārmukam
maddvitīyena tena iha vairam vaḥ savyasācinā
22. Your hostility (vaira) will be met here by Savyasācin (Arjuna), whose bow is the radiant and unconquerable Gāṇḍīva and who has me as his companion.
मद्द्वितीयं पुनः पार्थं कः प्रार्थयितुमिच्छति ।
यो न कालपरीतो वाप्यपि साक्षात्पुरंदरः ॥२३॥
23. maddvitīyaṁ punaḥ pārthaṁ kaḥ prārthayitumicchati ,
yo na kālaparīto vāpyapi sākṣātpuraṁdaraḥ.
23. mad-dvitīyam punaḥ pārtham kaḥ prārthayitum icchati
yaḥ na kāla-parītaḥ vā api api sākṣāt purandaraḥ
23. Who would desire to challenge Arjuna (pārtha), my constant companion, unless that person is not subject to the influence of time (kāla) or is none other than Indra himself?
बाहुभ्यामुद्वहेद्भूमिं दहेत्क्रुद्ध इमाः प्रजाः ।
पातयेत्त्रिदिवाद्देवान्योऽर्जुनं समरे जयेत् ॥२४॥
24. bāhubhyāmudvahedbhūmiṁ dahetkruddha imāḥ prajāḥ ,
pātayettridivāddevānyo'rjunaṁ samare jayet.
24. bāhubhyām ud-vahet bhūmim dahet kruddhaḥ imāḥ prajāḥ
pātayet tridivāt devān yaḥ arjunam samare jayet
24. Whoever could defeat Arjuna in battle, that person could also uplift the earth with their arms, angrily burn all these creatures (prajāḥ), or make the gods fall from heaven (tridiva).
देवासुरमनुष्येषु यक्षगन्धर्वभोगिषु ।
न तं पश्याम्यहं युद्धे पाण्डवं योऽभ्ययाद्रणे ॥२५॥
25. devāsuramanuṣyeṣu yakṣagandharvabhogiṣu ,
na taṁ paśyāmyahaṁ yuddhe pāṇḍavaṁ yo'bhyayādraṇe.
25. devāsura-manuṣyeṣu yakṣa-gandharva-bhogiṣu na tam
paśyāmi aham yuddhe pāṇḍavam yaḥ abhyayāt raṇe
25. Among the gods, asuras, humans, yakṣas, gandharvas, and serpents (bhogiṣu), I do not see anyone who would approach that Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) to confront him in battle.
यत्तद्विराटनगरे श्रूयते महदद्भुतम् ।
एकस्य च बहूनां च पर्याप्तं तन्निदर्शनम् ॥२६॥
26. yattadvirāṭanagare śrūyate mahadadbhutam ,
ekasya ca bahūnāṁ ca paryāptaṁ tannidarśanam.
26. yat tat virāṭa-nagare śrūyate mahat adbhutam
ekasya ca bahūnām ca paryāptam tat nidarśanam
26. That great wonder which is recounted concerning the city of Virāṭa, that incident serves as a sufficient example both for one (individual's prowess) and for many (opponents).
एकेन पाण्डुपुत्रेण विराटनगरे यदा ।
भग्नाः पलायन्त दिशः पर्याप्तं तन्निदर्शनम् ॥२७॥
27. ekena pāṇḍuputreṇa virāṭanagare yadā ,
bhagnāḥ palāyanta diśaḥ paryāptaṁ tannidarśanam.
27. ekena pāṇḍuputreṇa virāṭanagare yadā bhagnāḥ
palāyanta diśaḥ paryāptam tat nidarśanam
27. When, in the city of Virāṭa, the enemies were shattered and fled in all directions by just one son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna), that incident itself serves as a sufficient example.
बलं वीर्यं च तेजश्च शीघ्रता लघुहस्तता ।
अविषादश्च धैर्यं च पार्थान्नान्यत्र विद्यते ॥२८॥
28. balaṁ vīryaṁ ca tejaśca śīghratā laghuhastatā ,
aviṣādaśca dhairyaṁ ca pārthānnānyatra vidyate.
28. balam vīryam ca tejaḥ ca śīghratā laghuhastatā
aviṣādaḥ ca dhairyam ca pārthāt na anyatra vidyate
28. Strength, valor, brilliance, swiftness, dexterity, courage (aviṣāda), and fortitude are found nowhere else but in Arjuna (pārtha).
संजय उवाच ।
इत्यब्रवीद्धृषीकेशः पार्थमुद्धर्षयन्गिरा ।
गर्जन्समयवर्षीव गगने पाकशासनः ॥२९॥
29. saṁjaya uvāca ,
ityabravīddhṛṣīkeśaḥ pārthamuddharṣayangirā ,
garjansamayavarṣīva gagane pākaśāsanaḥ.
29. saṃjaya uvāca iti abravīt hṛṣīkeśaḥ pārtham uddharṣayan
girā garjan samayavarṣī iva gagane pākaśāsanaḥ
29. Saṃjaya said: Thus spoke Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa) to Arjuna (pārtha), encouraging him with words, thundering like Indra (pākaśāsana) causing seasonal rain in the sky.
केशवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा किरीटी श्वेतवाहनः ।
अर्जुनस्तन्महद्वाक्यमब्रवील्लोमहर्षणम् ॥३०॥
30. keśavasya vacaḥ śrutvā kirīṭī śvetavāhanaḥ ,
arjunastanmahadvākyamabravīllomaharṣaṇam.
30. keśavasya vacaḥ śrutvā kirīṭī śvetavāhanaḥ
arjunaḥ tat mahat vākyam abravīt lomaharṣaṇam
30. Having heard the words of Keśava (Kṛṣṇa), Arjuna, the crowned one (kirīṭī) and he whose vehicle is white (śvetavāhana), then uttered that great, hair-raising statement.
