वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अजिनानि विधुन्वन्तः करकांश्च द्विजर्षभाः ।
ऊचुस्तं भीर्न कर्तव्या वयं योत्स्यामहे परान् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ajināni vidhunvantaḥ karakāṁśca dvijarṣabhāḥ ,
ūcustaṁ bhīrna kartavyā vayaṁ yotsyāmahe parān.

1. Vaiśampaayana said: The foremost among the Brahmins, shaking their deer skins and water pots, said to him: 'Do not be afraid; we will fight the enemies!'
तानेवं वदतो विप्रानर्जुनः प्रहसन्निव ।
उवाच प्रेक्षका भूत्वा यूयं तिष्ठत पार्श्वतः ॥२॥
2. tānevaṁ vadato viprānarjunaḥ prahasanniva ,
uvāca prekṣakā bhūtvā yūyaṁ tiṣṭhata pārśvataḥ.
2. tān evam vadataḥ viprān arjunaḥ prahasan iva |
uvāca prekṣakāḥ bhūtvā yūyam tiṣṭhata pārśvataḥ
2. Arjuna, as if smiling, said to those Brahmins who were speaking in that manner: 'You all, just be spectators and stand aside.'
अहमेनानजिह्माग्रैः शतशो विकिरञ्शरैः ।
वारयिष्यामि संक्रुद्धान्मन्त्रैराशीविषानिव ॥३॥
3. ahamenānajihmāgraiḥ śataśo vikirañśaraiḥ ,
vārayiṣyāmi saṁkruddhānmantrairāśīviṣāniva.
3. aham enān ajihmāgraiḥ śataśaḥ vikiran śaraiḥ |
vārayiṣyāmi saṃkruddhān mantraiḥ āśīviṣān iva
3. I will ward off these very angry ones by showering hundreds of straight-tipped arrows, just as one would restrain venomous snakes with sacred incantations (mantras).
इति तद्धनुरादाय शुल्कावाप्तं महारथः ।
भ्रात्रा भीमेन सहितस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥४॥
4. iti taddhanurādāya śulkāvāptaṁ mahārathaḥ ,
bhrātrā bhīmena sahitastasthau giririvācalaḥ.
4. iti tad dhanuḥ ādāya śulkāvāptam mahārathaḥ
bhrātrā bhīmena sahitaḥ tasthau giriḥ iva acalaḥ
4. Thereupon, having taken that bow, which he had won as a prize, the great warrior (Arjuna), accompanied by his brother Bhīma, stood unmoving like a mountain.
ततः कर्णमुखान्क्रुद्धान्क्षत्रियांस्तान्रुषोत्थितान् ।
संपेततुरभीतौ तौ गजौ प्रतिगजानिव ॥५॥
5. tataḥ karṇamukhānkruddhānkṣatriyāṁstānruṣotthitān ,
saṁpetaturabhītau tau gajau pratigajāniva.
5. tataḥ karṇamukhān kruddhān kṣatriyān tān ruṣā
utthitān sampetatuḥ abhītau tau gajau pratigajān iva
5. Then, those two (Arjuna and Bhīma), fearless, rushed upon those angry Kṣatriyas led by Karṇa, who had risen up in wrath, just as two elephants (gaja) would charge against opposing elephants (gaja).
ऊचुश्च वाचः परुषास्ते राजानो जिघांसवः ।
आहवे हि द्विजस्यापि वधो दृष्टो युयुत्सतः ॥६॥
6. ūcuśca vācaḥ paruṣāste rājāno jighāṁsavaḥ ,
āhave hi dvijasyāpi vadho dṛṣṭo yuyutsataḥ.
6. ūcuḥ ca vācaḥ paruṣāḥ te rājānaḥ jighāṃsavaḥ
āhave hi dvijasya api vadhaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ yuyutsataḥ
6. And those kings, wishing to kill, spoke harsh words: "Indeed, even the killing of a twice-born (dvija) who desires to fight is sanctioned in battle."
ततो वैकर्तनः कर्णो जगामार्जुनमोजसा ।
युद्धार्थी वाशिताहेतोर्गजः प्रतिगजं यथा ॥७॥
7. tato vaikartanaḥ karṇo jagāmārjunamojasā ,
yuddhārthī vāśitāhetorgajaḥ pratigajaṁ yathā.
7. tataḥ vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ jagāma arjunam ojasā
yuddhārthī vāśitāhetoḥ gajaḥ pratigajam yathā
7. Then, Karṇa, the son of Vikartana, advanced against Arjuna with great might, desiring battle, just as an elephant (gaja), seeking a female in heat (vāśitā), charges against an opposing elephant (gaja).
भीमसेनं ययौ शल्यो मद्राणामीश्वरो बली ।
दुर्योधनादयस्त्वन्ये ब्राह्मणैः सह संगताः ।
मृदुपूर्वमयत्नेन प्रत्ययुध्यंस्तदाहवे ॥८॥
8. bhīmasenaṁ yayau śalyo madrāṇāmīśvaro balī ,
duryodhanādayastvanye brāhmaṇaiḥ saha saṁgatāḥ ,
mṛdupūrvamayatnena pratyayudhyaṁstadāhave.
8. bhīmasenam yayau śalyaḥ madrāṇām
īśvaraḥ balī duryodhanādayaḥ tu anye
brāhmaṇaiḥ saha saṅgatāḥ mṛdupūrvam
ayatnena pratyayudhyan tadā āhave
8. Śalya, the powerful ruler of the Madras, advanced against Bhīmasena. But Duryodhana and the other kings, accompanied by the brāhmaṇas, then countered in that battle, initially with a gentle approach and without great effort.
ततोऽर्जुनः प्रत्यविध्यदापतन्तं त्रिभिः शरैः ।
कर्णं वैकर्तनं धीमान्विकृष्य बलवद्धनुः ॥९॥
9. tato'rjunaḥ pratyavidhyadāpatantaṁ tribhiḥ śaraiḥ ,
karṇaṁ vaikartanaṁ dhīmānvikṛṣya balavaddhanuḥ.
9. tataḥ arjunaḥ pratyavidhyat āpatantam tribhiḥ śaraiḥ
karṇam vaikartanam dhīmān vikṛṣya balavat dhanuḥ
9. The sagacious Arjuna then, having powerfully drawn his strong bow, struck Karna (the son of Vikartana) in return with three arrows as Karna was advancing.
तेषां शराणां वेगेन शितानां तिग्मतेजसाम् ।
विमुह्यमानो राधेयो यत्नात्तमनुधावति ॥१०॥
10. teṣāṁ śarāṇāṁ vegena śitānāṁ tigmatejasām ,
vimuhyamāno rādheyo yatnāttamanudhāvati.
10. teṣām śarāṇām vegena śitānām tigmatejasām
vimuhyamānaḥ rādheyaḥ yatnāt tam anudhāvati
10. Being bewildered by the force of those keen arrows, which possessed fiery energy, Karna (Radheya) diligently pursued Arjuna.
तावुभावप्यनिर्देश्यौ लाघवाज्जयतां वरौ ।
अयुध्येतां सुसंरब्धावन्योन्यविजयैषिणौ ॥११॥
11. tāvubhāvapyanirdeśyau lāghavājjayatāṁ varau ,
ayudhyetāṁ susaṁrabdhāvanyonyavijayaiṣiṇau.
11. tau ubhau api anirdeśyau lāghavāt jayatām varau
ayudhyetām susaṃrabdhau anyonyavijayaiṣiṇau
11. Both of them, indescribable in their agility and foremost among conquerors, fought, greatly enraged and each desiring to conquer the other.
कृते प्रतिकृतं पश्य पश्य बाहुबलं च मे ।
इति शूरार्थवचनैराभाषेतां परस्परम् ॥१२॥
12. kṛte pratikṛtaṁ paśya paśya bāhubalaṁ ca me ,
iti śūrārthavacanairābhāṣetāṁ parasparam.
12. kṛte pratikṛtam paśya paśya bāhubalam ca me
iti śūrārthavacanaiḥ ābhāṣetām parasparam
12. "See the retaliation for what has been done! And see my arm-strength!" With such valorous words, they spoke to each other.
ततोऽर्जुनस्य भुजयोर्वीर्यमप्रतिमं भुवि ।
ज्ञात्वा वैकर्तनः कर्णः संरब्धः समयोधयत् ॥१३॥
13. tato'rjunasya bhujayorvīryamapratimaṁ bhuvi ,
jñātvā vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ saṁrabdhaḥ samayodhayat.
13. tataḥ arjunasya bhujayoḥ vīryam apratimam bhuvi
jñātvā vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ saṃrabdhaḥ samayodhayat
13. Then Karna (Vaikartana), having recognized Arjuna's unparalleled valor of arms on earth, fought with great agitation.
अर्जुनेन प्रयुक्तांस्तान्बाणान्वेगवतस्तदा ।
प्रतिहत्य ननादोच्चैः सैन्यास्तमभिपूजयन् ॥१४॥
14. arjunena prayuktāṁstānbāṇānvegavatastadā ,
pratihatya nanādoccaiḥ sainyāstamabhipūjayan.
14. arjunena prayuktān tān bāṇān vegavataḥ tadā
pratihatya nanāda uccaiḥ sainyāḥ tam abhipūjayan
14. At that time, having countered those swift arrows shot by Arjuna, he roared loudly, while the soldiers honored him.
कर्ण उवाच ।
तुष्यामि ते विप्रमुख्य भुजवीर्यस्य संयुगे ।
अविषादस्य चैवास्य शस्त्रास्त्रविनयस्य च ॥१५॥
15. karṇa uvāca ,
tuṣyāmi te vipramukhya bhujavīryasya saṁyuge ,
aviṣādasya caivāsya śastrāstravinayasya ca.
15. karṇa uvāca tuṣyāmi te vipramukhya bhujavīryasya
saṃyuge aviṣādasya ca eva asya śastrāstravinayasya ca
15. Karṇa said: O chief among Brahmins, I am pleased with your arm strength in battle, with your lack of despondency, and with your skill in weapons and missiles.
किं त्वं साक्षाद्धनुर्वेदो रामो वा विप्रसत्तम ।
अथ साक्षाद्धरिहयः साक्षाद्वा विष्णुरच्युतः ॥१६॥
16. kiṁ tvaṁ sākṣāddhanurvedo rāmo vā viprasattama ,
atha sākṣāddharihayaḥ sākṣādvā viṣṇuracyutaḥ.
16. kim tvam sākṣāt dhanurvedaḥ rāmaḥ vā viprasattama
atha sākṣāt harihayaḥ sākṣāt vā viṣṇuḥ acyutaḥ
16. O best among Brahmins, are you directly the science of archery (Dhanurveda) personified, or Rāma himself? Or are you directly Indra (Harihaya), or directly the immutable Viṣṇu?
आत्मप्रच्छादनार्थं वै बाहुवीर्यमुपाश्रितः ।
विप्ररूपं विधायेदं ततो मां प्रतियुध्यसे ॥१७॥
17. ātmapracchādanārthaṁ vai bāhuvīryamupāśritaḥ ,
viprarūpaṁ vidhāyedaṁ tato māṁ pratiyudhyase.
17. ātmapracchādanārtham vai bāhuvīryam upāśritaḥ
viprarūpam vidhāya idam tataḥ mām pratiyudhyase
17. Indeed, you have assumed the strength of your arms, adopted this form of a Brahmin for the purpose of concealing your true self (ātman), and thus you are fighting against me.
न हि मामाहवे क्रुद्धमन्यः साक्षाच्छचीपतेः ।
पुमान्योधयितुं शक्तः पाण्डवाद्वा किरीटिनः ॥१८॥
18. na hi māmāhave kruddhamanyaḥ sākṣācchacīpateḥ ,
pumānyodhayituṁ śaktaḥ pāṇḍavādvā kirīṭinaḥ.
18. na hi mām āhave kruddham anyaḥ sākṣāt śacīpateḥ
pumān yodhayitum śaktaḥ pāṇḍavāt vā kirīṭinaḥ
18. Indeed, no other man is capable of fighting me when I am enraged in battle, except for Indra (Śacīpati) himself, or the crowned Pāṇḍava (Arjuna).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तमेवंवादिनं तत्र फल्गुनः प्रत्यभाषत ।
नास्मि कर्ण धनुर्वेदो नास्मि रामः प्रतापवान् ।
ब्राह्मणोऽस्मि युधां श्रेष्ठः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥१९॥
19. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tamevaṁvādinaṁ tatra phalgunaḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
nāsmi karṇa dhanurvedo nāsmi rāmaḥ pratāpavān ,
brāhmaṇo'smi yudhāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ.
19. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tam evaṃvādinaṃ tatra
phalgunaḥ pratyabhāṣata na asmi karṇa
dhanurvedaḥ na asmi rāmaḥ pratāpavān brāhmaṇaḥ
asmi yudhāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvaśastrabṛtāṃ varaḥ
19. Vaiśampāyana said, "There, Arjuna (Phalguna) replied to Karna, who was speaking thus: 'O Karna, I am neither a master of archery nor the mighty Rama. I am a Brahmin, the best among warriors, and the foremost among all who bear weapons.'"
ब्राह्मे पौरंदरे चास्त्रे निष्ठितो गुरुशासनात् ।
स्थितोऽस्म्यद्य रणे जेतुं त्वां वीराविचलो भव ॥२०॥
20. brāhme pauraṁdare cāstre niṣṭhito guruśāsanāt ,
sthito'smyadya raṇe jetuṁ tvāṁ vīrāvicalo bhava.
20. brāhme paurandare ca astre niṣṭhitaḥ guruśāsanāt
sthitaḥ asmi adya raṇe jetuṃ tvāṃ vīra avicalaḥ bhava
20. By the instruction of my preceptor (guru), I am skilled in both the Brahminical (brāhma) and Indric (paurandara) weapons (astra). Today, I stand on this battlefield to conquer you, O hero; be steadfast!
एवमुक्तस्तु राधेयो युद्धात्कर्णो न्यवर्तत ।
ब्राह्मं तेजस्तदाजय्यं मन्यमानो महारथः ॥२१॥
21. evamuktastu rādheyo yuddhātkarṇo nyavartata ,
brāhmaṁ tejastadājayyaṁ manyamāno mahārathaḥ.
21. evam uktaḥ tu rādheyaḥ yuddhāt karṇaḥ nyavartata
brāhmaṃ tejaḥ tadā ajayyaṃ manyamānaḥ mahārathaḥ
21. However, Karna (Radheya), thus spoken to, withdrew from the battle, the great chariot-warrior considering that Brahminical (brāhma) spiritual power (tejas) to be invincible at that moment.
युद्धं तूपेयतुस्तत्र राजञ्शल्यवृकोदरौ ।
बलिनौ युगपन्मत्तौ स्पर्धया च बलेन च ॥२२॥
22. yuddhaṁ tūpeyatustatra rājañśalyavṛkodarau ,
balinau yugapanmattau spardhayā ca balena ca.
22. yuddhaṃ tu upeyatuḥ tatra rājan śalyavṛkodarau
balinau yugapat mattau spardhayā ca balena ca
22. But there, O King, Shalya and Bhima (Vṛkodara) both entered the battle. They were both powerful, simultaneously enraged by rivalry and by their sheer strength.
अन्योन्यमाह्वयन्तौ तौ मत्ताविव महागजौ ।
मुष्टिभिर्जानुभिश्चैव निघ्नन्तावितरेतरम् ।
मुहूर्तं तौ तथान्योन्यं समरे पर्यकर्षताम् ॥२३॥
23. anyonyamāhvayantau tau mattāviva mahāgajau ,
muṣṭibhirjānubhiścaiva nighnantāvitaretaram ,
muhūrtaṁ tau tathānyonyaṁ samare paryakarṣatām.
23. anyonyam āhvayantau tau mattau iva
mahāgajau muṣṭibhiḥ jānubhiḥ ca eva
nighnantau itaretaram muhūrtaṃ tau
tathā anyonyam samare paryakarṣatām
23. Calling out to each other, those two, like maddened great elephants, struck one another with their fists and knees. Thus, for a moment, they dragged each other around on the battlefield.
ततो भीमः समुत्क्षिप्य बाहुभ्यां शल्यमाहवे ।
न्यवधीद्बलिनां श्रेष्ठो जहसुर्ब्राह्मणास्ततः ॥२४॥
24. tato bhīmaḥ samutkṣipya bāhubhyāṁ śalyamāhave ,
nyavadhīdbalināṁ śreṣṭho jahasurbrāhmaṇāstataḥ.
24. tataḥ bhīmaḥ samutkṣipya bāhubhyām śalyam āhave
nyavadhīt balinām śreṣṭhaḥ jahasuḥ brāhmaṇāḥ tataḥ
24. Then Bhima, the best among the strong, having lifted Shalya in battle with his two arms, defeated him. Thereupon, the Brahmins laughed.
तत्राश्चर्यं भीमसेनश्चकार पुरुषर्षभः ।
यच्छल्यं पतितं भूमौ नाहनद्बलिनं बली ॥२५॥
25. tatrāścaryaṁ bhīmasenaścakāra puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
yacchalyaṁ patitaṁ bhūmau nāhanadbalinaṁ balī.
25. tatra āścaryam bhīmasenaḥ ca cakāra puruṣarṣabhaḥ
yat śalyam patitam bhūmau na ahanat balinam balī
25. There, Bhimasena, that bull among men, did a wondrous thing: he, though strong, did not strike the mighty Shalya who had fallen to the ground.
पातिते भीमसेनेन शल्ये कर्णे च शङ्किते ।
शङ्किताः सर्वराजानः परिवव्रुर्वृकोदरम् ॥२६॥
26. pātite bhīmasenena śalye karṇe ca śaṅkite ,
śaṅkitāḥ sarvarājānaḥ parivavrurvṛkodaram.
26. pātite bhīmasenena śalye karṇe ca śaṅkite
śaṅkitāḥ sarvarājānaḥ parivavruḥ vṛkodaram
26. When Shalya had been made to fall by Bhimasena, and Karna was thus made apprehensive, all the kings became fearful and surrounded Vrikodara (Bhima).
ऊचुश्च सहितास्तत्र साध्विमे ब्राह्मणर्षभाः ।
विज्ञायन्तां क्वजन्मानः क्वनिवासास्तथैव च ॥२७॥
27. ūcuśca sahitāstatra sādhvime brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ ,
vijñāyantāṁ kvajanmānaḥ kvanivāsāstathaiva ca.
27. ūcuḥ ca sahitāḥ tatra sādhu ime brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ
vijñāyantām kvajanmānaḥ kvanivāsāḥ tathā eva ca
27. And there, assembled together, these excellent Brahmins exclaimed: "Let it be ascertained where these (mighty men) were born and where they reside, and similarly, what their lineage is!"
को हि राधासुतं कर्णं शक्तो योधयितुं रणे ।
अन्यत्र रामाद्द्रोणाद्वा कृपाद्वापि शरद्वतः ॥२८॥
28. ko hi rādhāsutaṁ karṇaṁ śakto yodhayituṁ raṇe ,
anyatra rāmāddroṇādvā kṛpādvāpi śaradvataḥ.
28. kaḥ hi rādhāsutam karṇam śaktaḥ yodhayitum raṇe
anyatra rāmāt droṇāt vā kṛpāt vā api śaradvataḥ
28. Indeed, who would be capable of fighting Karna, the son of Radha, in battle, apart from Rama (Parashurama), or Drona, or even Kripa, the son of Sharadvat?
कृष्णाद्वा देवकीपुत्रात्फल्गुनाद्वा परंतपात् ।
को वा दुर्योधनं शक्तः प्रतियोधयितुं रणे ॥२९॥
29. kṛṣṇādvā devakīputrātphalgunādvā paraṁtapāt ,
ko vā duryodhanaṁ śaktaḥ pratiyodhayituṁ raṇe.
29. kṛṣṇāt vā devakīputrāt phalgunāt vā paraṃtapāt
kaḥ vā duryodhanaṃ śaktaḥ pratiyodhayituṃ raṇe
29. Apart from Kṛṣṇa, the son of Devakī, or Arjuna (phalguna), the scorcher of foes, who indeed is capable of fighting Duryodhana in battle?
तथैव मद्रराजानं शल्यं बलवतां वरम् ।
बलदेवादृते वीरात्पाण्डवाद्वा वृकोदरात् ॥३०॥
30. tathaiva madrarājānaṁ śalyaṁ balavatāṁ varam ,
baladevādṛte vīrātpāṇḍavādvā vṛkodarāt.
30. tathā eva madrarājānaṃ śalyaṃ balavatāṃ varam
baladevāt ṛte vīrāt pāṇḍavāt vā vṛkodarāt
30. Similarly, who can fight King Śalya of Madra, the best among the strong, except for the heroic Baladeva or the Pāṇḍava Bhīma (Vṛkodara)?
क्रियतामवहारोऽस्माद्युद्धाद्ब्राह्मणसंयुतात् ।
अथैनानुपलभ्येह पुनर्योत्स्यामहे वयम् ॥३१॥
31. kriyatāmavahāro'smādyuddhādbrāhmaṇasaṁyutāt ,
athainānupalabhyeha punaryotsyāmahe vayam.
31. kriyatām avahāraḥ asmāt yuddhāt brāhmaṇasaṃyutāt
atha enān upalabhya iha punar yotsyāmahe vayam
31. Let a withdrawal be made from this battle involving Brahmins. Then, upon finding them here, we shall fight again.
तत्कर्म भीमस्य समीक्ष्य कृष्णः कुन्तीसुतौ तौ परिशङ्कमानः ।
निवारयामास महीपतींस्तान्धर्मेण लब्धेत्यनुनीय सर्वान् ॥३२॥
32. tatkarma bhīmasya samīkṣya kṛṣṇaḥ; kuntīsutau tau pariśaṅkamānaḥ ,
nivārayāmāsa mahīpatīṁstā;ndharmeṇa labdhetyanunīya sarvān.
32. tat karma bhīmasya samīkṣya kṛṣṇaḥ
kuntīsutau tau pariśaṅkamānaḥ
nivārayām āsa mahīpatīn tān
dharmeṇa labdhā iti anunīya sarvān
32. Kṛṣṇa, having observed that action (karma) of Bhīma and being apprehensive about those two sons of Kuntī, restrained all those kings by persuading them that it had been obtained righteously (dharma).
त एवं संनिवृत्तास्तु युद्धाद्युद्धविशारदाः ।
यथावासं ययुः सर्वे विस्मिता राजसत्तमाः ॥३३॥
33. ta evaṁ saṁnivṛttāstu yuddhādyuddhaviśāradāḥ ,
yathāvāsaṁ yayuḥ sarve vismitā rājasattamāḥ.
33. te evaṃ saṃnivṛttāḥ tu yuddhāt yuddhaviśāradāḥ
yathāvāsam yayuḥ sarve vismitā rājasattamāḥ
33. Thus, having withdrawn from the battle, all those kings, though skilled in warfare, and astonished, returned to their respective dwellings.
वृत्तो ब्रह्मोत्तरो रङ्गः पाञ्चाली ब्राह्मणैर्वृता ।
इति ब्रुवन्तः प्रययुर्ये तत्रासन्समागताः ॥३४॥
34. vṛtto brahmottaro raṅgaḥ pāñcālī brāhmaṇairvṛtā ,
iti bruvantaḥ prayayurye tatrāsansamāgatāḥ.
34. vṛttaḥ brahmottaraḥ raṅgaḥ pāñcālī brāhmaṇaiḥ vṛtā
iti bruvantaḥ prayayuḥ ye tatra āsan samāgatāḥ
34. The arena became filled with Brahmins, and Pāñcālī was surrounded by Brahmins. Saying this, those who had assembled there departed.
ब्राह्मणैस्तु प्रतिच्छन्नौ रौरवाजिनवासिभिः ।
कृच्छ्रेण जग्मतुस्तत्र भीमसेनधनंजयौ ॥३५॥
35. brāhmaṇaistu praticchannau rauravājinavāsibhiḥ ,
kṛcchreṇa jagmatustatra bhīmasenadhanaṁjayau.

35. But hidden among the Brahmins who wore antelope skins, Bhīmasena and Dhanaṃjaya went there with difficulty.
विमुक्तौ जनसंबाधाच्छत्रुभिः परिविक्षतौ ।
कृष्णयानुगतौ तत्र नृवीरौ तौ विरेजतुः ॥३६॥
36. vimuktau janasaṁbādhācchatrubhiḥ parivikṣatau ,
kṛṣṇayānugatau tatra nṛvīrau tau virejatuḥ.

36. Released from the crowd, though wounded by enemies, and followed by Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), those two heroic men shone there.
तेषां माता बहुविधं विनाशं पर्यचिन्तयत् ।
अनागच्छत्सु पुत्रेषु भैक्षकालेऽतिगच्छति ॥३७॥
37. teṣāṁ mātā bahuvidhaṁ vināśaṁ paryacintayat ,
anāgacchatsu putreṣu bhaikṣakāle'tigacchati.

37. When her sons did not return and the time for collecting alms had passed, their mother considered various kinds of misfortune that might have befallen them.
धार्तराष्ट्रैर्हता न स्युर्विज्ञाय कुरुपुंगवाः ।
मायान्वितैर्वा रक्षोभिः सुघोरैर्दृढवैरिभिः ॥३८॥
38. dhārtarāṣṭrairhatā na syurvijñāya kurupuṁgavāḥ ,
māyānvitairvā rakṣobhiḥ sughorairdṛḍhavairibhiḥ.

38. She wondered if the best of the Kurus (kuru) might have been killed by the Dhārtarāṣṭras, or by terrible, strongly hostile demons (rakṣas) endowed with illusion (māyā), understanding this possibility.
विपरीतं मतं जातं व्यासस्यापि महात्मनः ।
इत्येवं चिन्तयामास सुतस्नेहान्विता पृथा ॥३९॥
39. viparītaṁ mataṁ jātaṁ vyāsasyāpi mahātmanaḥ ,
ityevaṁ cintayāmāsa sutasnehānvitā pṛthā.

39. Pṛthā, filled with affection for her sons, pondered thus: an opinion contrary to that of even the great-souled (mahātman) Vyāsa has arisen.
महत्यथापराह्णे तु घनैः सूर्य इवावृतः ।
ब्राह्मणैः प्राविशत्तत्र जिष्णुर्ब्रह्मपुरस्कृतः ॥४०॥
40. mahatyathāparāhṇe tu ghanaiḥ sūrya ivāvṛtaḥ ,
brāhmaṇaiḥ prāviśattatra jiṣṇurbrahmapuraskṛtaḥ.
40. mahati atha aparāhṇe tu ghanaiḥ sūryaḥ iva āvṛtaḥ
brāhmaṇaiḥ prāviśat tatra jiṣṇuḥ brahmapuraskṛtaḥ
40. Then, late in the afternoon, Jiṣṇu (Arjuna), preceded by the Brahmins, entered there, like the sun enveloped by clouds.
