Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then, after some time, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of dharma (dharma), remembering well the sage's message, spoke these words.

2.
In a secluded place, making a comforting smile and caressing him with his hand, Yudhiṣṭhira addressed Arjuna, the wise one, the best among the Bhāratas.

3.
King Yudhiṣṭhira, the subduer of enemies and king of dharma (dharma), after meditating for a moment on their forest dwelling, spoke these words in private to Dhananjaya (Arjuna).
भीष्मे द्रोणे कृपे कर्णे द्रोणपुत्रे च भारत ।

dhanurvedaḥ catuṣpādaḥ eteṣu adya pratiṣṭhitaḥ
4.
O descendant of Bharata, the complete science of archery (dhanurveda) is today firmly established in Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā).

5.
And they (Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and Aśvatthāmā) fully understand the divine (brāhma), celestial (daiva), and demonic (āsura) forms of archery, including their deployment and countermeasures, as well as the application of all types of weapons completely.

6.
All of them (the warriors), having been appeased by Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana), and being well-provided for and content, he (Duryodhana) behaves towards them with the utmost respect, as one would towards a teacher (guru).

And indeed, his (Duryodhana's) treatment of all warriors is always unsurpassed. Being honored in due course, they will not diminish their power (śakti).

Today, this entire earth follows Duryodhana's command. Our refuge is in you, and our burden is placed upon you. Therefore, O subduer of enemies, I perceive a timely action that must be taken.

O dear one, O conqueror of wealth (Arjuna), armed with a bow, armored, wielding a sword, and a resolute person endowed with strength, proceed towards the northern direction, yielding no passage to anyone. For indeed, all divine weapons are with Indra.

Having spoken thus, the lord Dharma-rāja taught him (Arjuna), who had been initiated by that ritual and whose speech, body, and mind were controlled. Then, the elder brother (Yudhiṣṭhira) gave permission to his brother, the hero (Arjuna).

26.
Then, after circumambulating his brothers and Dhaumya, the mighty-armed Pandava set out, taking his beautiful bow.

All beings moved away from the path of that heroic and mighty one who was endowed with Indrā's power (yoga) as he proceeded.

The magnanimous one, having attained a speed like that of thought and being endowed with (yoga) discipline like the wind, reached the sacred mountain in a single day.

Having traversed the Himavat mountain range and also Gandhamādana, he, tireless, crossed difficult terrains day and night.

After reaching Mount Indrakīla, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) then stopped. Indeed, at that moment, he heard a voice in the sky saying, "Stay!"

Then Savyasācin (Arjuna) saw an ascetic at the foot of a tree, radiant with divine splendor, tawny-colored, with matted hair, and emaciated.

32.
The great ascetic, seeing Arjuna standing there, said, "Who are you, my dear one, who has arrived here, armed with a bow, wearing armor, and carrying arrows? With your black wrist-guards fastened, you are devoted to the warrior's code (kṣatra-dharma)."

35.
Thus, the Brahmin repeatedly spoke to Arjuna, the hero of endless might, as if he were just any other ordinary person. Yet, he could not move him, whose resolve was exceedingly firm, from his steadfastness.

Then, that Brahmin, pleased and as if laughing, said to him, "Ask for a boon; may you have well-being, O destroyer of enemies (arisūdana)! I am Śakra (Indra)."

Thus spoken to, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), the valiant upholder of the Kuru lineage, having bowed down with folded hands, replied to the thousand-eyed one (sahasrākṣa).

Mahendra (Indra), with a pleased self (ātman) and as if laughing, replied to him, “What is the purpose of weapons (astram) for you, O Dhanañjaya, who has arrived here? Choose other desires and worlds, for you have attained the supreme state (gati).”

Arjuna, having been thus addressed, replied to the thousand-eyed one (Indra): "I do not desire worlds, nor pleasures, nor even divinity. How then can there be happiness?"

41.
O lord of the thirty (gods), I do not desire sovereignty over all immortals. By abandoning those brothers in the forest and not retaliating against the enmity, I would incur eternal dishonor (akīrti) in all worlds for countless years.
