भीम उवाच ।
पौरोगवो ब्रुवाणोऽहं बल्लवो नाम नामतः ।
उपस्थास्यामि राजानं विराटमिति मे मतिः ॥१॥
1. bhīma uvāca ,
paurogavo bruvāṇo'haṁ ballavo nāma nāmataḥ ,
upasthāsyāmi rājānaṁ virāṭamiti me matiḥ.

nāmataḥ upasthāsyāmi rājānaṃ virāṭaṃ iti me matiḥ
1. Bhīma said: 'I will declare myself as Ballava by name, the chief cook. I will serve King Virāṭa; this is my intention (mati).'
सूपानस्य करिष्यामि कुशलोऽस्मि महानसे ।
कृतपूर्वाणि यैरस्य व्यञ्जनानि सुशिक्षितैः ।
तानप्यभिभविष्यामि प्रीतिं संजनयन्नहम् ॥२॥
2. sūpānasya kariṣyāmi kuśalo'smi mahānase ,
kṛtapūrvāṇi yairasya vyañjanāni suśikṣitaiḥ ,
tānapyabhibhaviṣyāmi prītiṁ saṁjanayannaham.
2. sūpānasya kariṣyāmi kuśalaḥ asmi
mahānase kṛtapūrvāṇi yaiḥ asya
vyañjanāni suśikṣitaiḥ tān api
abhibhaviṣyāmi prītiṃ saṃjanayan aham
2. I am skilled in cookery, and I will prepare dishes. I will even surpass those well-trained cooks who have previously prepared his dishes, thus generating satisfaction.
आहरिष्यामि दारूणां निचयान्महतोऽपि च ।
तत्प्रेक्ष्य विपुलं कर्म राजा प्रीतो भविष्यति ॥३॥
3. āhariṣyāmi dārūṇāṁ nicayānmahato'pi ca ,
tatprekṣya vipulaṁ karma rājā prīto bhaviṣyati.
3. āhariṣyāmi dārūṇām nicayān mahataḥ api ca tat
prekṣya vipulaṃ karma rājā prītaḥ bhaviṣyati
3. I will bring large piles of wood. Witnessing this extensive work (karma), the king will become pleased.
द्विपा वा बलिनो राजन्वृषभा वा महाबलाः ।
विनिग्राह्या यदि मया निग्रहीष्यामि तानपि ॥४॥
4. dvipā vā balino rājanvṛṣabhā vā mahābalāḥ ,
vinigrāhyā yadi mayā nigrahīṣyāmi tānapi.
4. dvipāḥ vā balinaḥ rājan vṛṣabhāḥ vā mahābalāḥ
vinigrāhyāḥ yadi mayā nigrahīṣyāmi tān api
4. O king, if strong elephants or very powerful bulls are to be subdued by me, I will subdue them also.
ये च केचिन्नियोत्स्यन्ति समाजेषु नियोधकाः ।
तानहं निहनिष्यामि प्रीतिं तस्य विवर्धयन् ॥५॥
5. ye ca kecinniyotsyanti samājeṣu niyodhakāḥ ,
tānahaṁ nihaniṣyāmi prītiṁ tasya vivardhayan.
5. ye ca kecit niyotsyanti samājeṣu niyodhakāḥ
tān aham nihaniṣyāmi prītiṃ tasya vivardhayan
5. And whoever among the fighters may contend in the assemblies, I will defeat them, thereby increasing his satisfaction.
न त्वेतान्युध्यमानान्वै हनिष्यामि कथंचन ।
तथैतान्पातयिष्यामि यथा यास्यन्ति न क्षयम् ॥६॥
6. na tvetānyudhyamānānvai haniṣyāmi kathaṁcana ,
tathaitānpātayiṣyāmi yathā yāsyanti na kṣayam.
6. na tu etān yudhyamānān vai haniṣyāmi kathaṃcana
tathā etān pātayiṣyāmi yathā yāsyanti na kṣayam
6. Indeed, I will certainly not kill these combatants by any means. Instead, I will bring them down in such a way that they will not meet utter destruction.
आरालिको गोविकर्ता सूपकर्ता नियोधकः ।
आसं युधिष्ठिरस्याहमिति वक्ष्यामि पृच्छतः ॥७॥
7. ārāliko govikartā sūpakartā niyodhakaḥ ,
āsaṁ yudhiṣṭhirasyāhamiti vakṣyāmi pṛcchataḥ.
7. ārālikaḥ govikartā sūpakartā niyodhakaḥ āsam
yudhiṣṭhirasya aham iti vakṣyāmi pṛcchataḥ
7. I was a chef, a cattle butcher, a preparer of curries, and a superintendent for Yudhishthira. That is what I will say to anyone who asks.
आत्मानमात्मना रक्षंश्चरिष्यामि विशां पते ।
इत्येतत्प्रतिजानामि विहरिष्याम्यहं यथा ॥८॥
8. ātmānamātmanā rakṣaṁścariṣyāmi viśāṁ pate ,
ityetatpratijānāmi vihariṣyāmyahaṁ yathā.
8. ātmānam ātmanā rakṣan cariṣyāmi viśām pate
iti etat pratijānāmi vihariṣyāmi aham yathā
8. O ruler of the people, I will sustain myself (ātman) by my own (ātman) efforts. This I declare: I will live in this manner.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
यमग्निर्ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा समागच्छन्नृणां वरम् ।
दिधक्षुः खाण्डवं दावं दाशार्हसहितं पुरा ॥९॥
9. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
yamagnirbrāhmaṇo bhūtvā samāgacchannṛṇāṁ varam ,
didhakṣuḥ khāṇḍavaṁ dāvaṁ dāśārhasahitaṁ purā.
9. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca yam agniḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhūtvā samāgacchan
nṛṇām varam didhakṣuḥ khāṇḍavam dāvam dāśārhasahitam purā
9. Yudhishthira said: Formerly, Agni, having assumed the form of a Brahmin and desiring to burn the Khandava forest (khāṇḍava) with a conflagration, approached the best of men, who was accompanied by Dasharha (Krishna).
महाबलं महाबाहुमजितं कुरुनन्दनम् ।
सोऽयं किं कर्म कौन्तेयः करिष्यति धनंजयः ॥१०॥
10. mahābalaṁ mahābāhumajitaṁ kurunandanam ,
so'yaṁ kiṁ karma kaunteyaḥ kariṣyati dhanaṁjayaḥ.
10. mahābalam mahābāhum ajitam kurunandanam saḥ
ayam kim karma kaunteyaḥ kariṣyati dhanaṃjayaḥ
10. What action (karma) will this Arjuna perform, this son of Kunti (Kaunteya) and conqueror of wealth (Dhānañjaya), who is of great strength, mighty-armed, unconquered, and the delight of the Kurus?
योऽयमासाद्य तं दावं तर्पयामास पावकम् ।
विजित्यैकरथेनेन्द्रं हत्वा पन्नगराक्षसान् ।
श्रेष्ठः प्रतियुधां नाम सोऽर्जुनः किं करिष्यति ॥११॥
11. yo'yamāsādya taṁ dāvaṁ tarpayāmāsa pāvakam ,
vijityaikarathenendraṁ hatvā pannagarākṣasān ,
śreṣṭhaḥ pratiyudhāṁ nāma so'rjunaḥ kiṁ kariṣyati.
11. yaḥ ayam āsādya tam dāvam tarpayām
āsa pāvakam vijitya ekaratheṇa indram
hatvā pannagarākṣasān śreṣṭhaḥ
pratiyudhām nāma saḥ arjunaḥ kim kariṣyati
11. What will that Arjuna do – he who, having encountered that great forest fire, satisfied the fire god (pāvaka); who conquered Indra while riding a single chariot; and who slew the serpents and Rākṣasas? He is indeed known as the foremost among those who confront opponents.
सूर्यः प्रतपतां श्रेष्ठो द्विपदां ब्राह्मणो वरः ।
आशीविषश्च सर्पाणामग्निस्तेजस्विनां वरः ॥१२॥
12. sūryaḥ pratapatāṁ śreṣṭho dvipadāṁ brāhmaṇo varaḥ ,
āśīviṣaśca sarpāṇāmagnistejasvināṁ varaḥ.
12. sūryaḥ pratapatām śreṣṭhaḥ dvipadām brāhmaṇaḥ
varaḥ āśīviṣaḥ ca sarpāṇām agniḥ tejasvinām varaḥ
12. The Sun is the best among all who shine; the Brahmin is the most excellent among bipeds. Similarly, the venomous snake is the foremost among serpents, and Fire is the best among the radiant.
आयुधानां वरो वज्रः ककुद्मी च गवां वरः ।
ह्रदानामुदधिः श्रेष्ठः पर्जन्यो वर्षतां वरः ॥१३॥
13. āyudhānāṁ varo vajraḥ kakudmī ca gavāṁ varaḥ ,
hradānāmudadhiḥ śreṣṭhaḥ parjanyo varṣatāṁ varaḥ.
13. āyudhānām varaḥ vajraḥ kakudmī ca gavām varaḥ
hradānām udadhiḥ śreṣṭhaḥ parjanyaḥ varṣatām varaḥ
13. Among weapons, the thunderbolt (Vajra) is the best; and among cattle, the bull (kakudmin) is the most excellent. The ocean is the best among reservoirs of water, and Parjanya is the most excellent among those who shower rain.
धृतराष्ट्रश्च नागानां हस्तिष्वैरावतो वरः ।
पुत्रः प्रियाणामधिको भार्या च सुहृदां वरा ॥१४॥
14. dhṛtarāṣṭraśca nāgānāṁ hastiṣvairāvato varaḥ ,
putraḥ priyāṇāmadhiko bhāryā ca suhṛdāṁ varā.
14. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ca nāgānām hastiṣu airāvataḥ varaḥ
putraḥ priyāṇām adhikaḥ bhāryā ca suhṛdām varā
14. Dhritarashtra is the foremost among serpents; Airavata is the best among elephants; a son is superior among beloved ones; and a wife is the best among friends.
यथैतानि विशिष्टानि जात्यां जात्यां वृकोदर ।
एवं युवा गुडाकेशः श्रेष्ठः सर्वधनुष्मताम् ॥१५॥
15. yathaitāni viśiṣṭāni jātyāṁ jātyāṁ vṛkodara ,
evaṁ yuvā guḍākeśaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām.
15. yathā etāni viśiṣṭāni jātyām jātyām vṛkodara
evam yuvā guḍākeśaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām
15. Just as these (mentioned in the previous verse) are distinguished in each of their respective categories, O Vrikodara (Bhima), so too is the young Gudakesha (Arjuna) the foremost among all archers.
सोऽयमिन्द्रादनवरो वासुदेवाच्च भारत ।
गाण्डीवधन्वा श्वेताश्वो बीभत्सुः किं करिष्यति ॥१६॥
16. so'yamindrādanavaro vāsudevācca bhārata ,
gāṇḍīvadhanvā śvetāśvo bībhatsuḥ kiṁ kariṣyati.
16. saḥ ayam indrāt anavaraḥ vāsudevāt ca bhārata
gāṇḍīvadhanvā śvetāśvaḥ bībhatsuḥ kim kariṣyati
16. This very one (Arjuna) is not inferior to Indra, nor to Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa), O Bharata. What will this wielder of the Gaṇḍīva bow, mounted on white horses, Bibhatsu (Arjuna), accomplish?
उषित्वा पञ्च वर्षाणि सहस्राक्षस्य वेश्मनि ।
दिव्यान्यस्त्राण्यवाप्तानि देवरूपेण भास्वता ॥१७॥
17. uṣitvā pañca varṣāṇi sahasrākṣasya veśmani ,
divyānyastrāṇyavāptāni devarūpeṇa bhāsvatā.
17. uṣitvā pañca varṣāṇi sahasrākṣasya veśmani
divyāni astrāṇi avāptāni devarūpeṇa bhāsvatā
17. Having resided for five years in the abode of the thousand-eyed (Indra), divine weapons were acquired by the glorious one (Arjuna), who appeared in a divine form.
यं मन्ये द्वादशं रुद्रमादित्यानां त्रयोदशम् ।
यस्य बाहू समौ दीर्घौ ज्याघातकठिनत्वचौ ।
दक्षिणे चैव सव्ये च गवामिव वहः कृतः ॥१८॥
18. yaṁ manye dvādaśaṁ rudramādityānāṁ trayodaśam ,
yasya bāhū samau dīrghau jyāghātakaṭhinatvacau ,
dakṣiṇe caiva savye ca gavāmiva vahaḥ kṛtaḥ.
18. yam manye dvādaśam rudram ādityānām
trayodaśam | yasya bāhū samau dīrghau
jyāghāṭakaṭhinatvacau | dakṣiṇe
ca eva savye ca gavām iva vahaḥ kṛtaḥ
18. I consider him the twelfth of the Rudras and the thirteenth of the Adityas. His arms are equally long, and the skin on both his right and left arms is hardened by the impact of the bowstring, resembling the calluses on oxen.
हिमवानिव शैलानां समुद्रः सरितामिव ।
त्रिदशानां यथा शक्रो वसूनामिव हव्यवाट् ॥१९॥
19. himavāniva śailānāṁ samudraḥ saritāmiva ,
tridaśānāṁ yathā śakro vasūnāmiva havyavāṭ.
19. himavān iva śailānām samudraḥ saritām iva |
tridaśānām yathā śakraḥ vasūnām iva havyavāṭ
19. He is like the Himalayas among mountains, the ocean among rivers, just as Indra (śakra) is among the gods (tridaśa), and Agni (havyavāṭ) among the Vasus.
मृगाणामिव शार्दूलो गरुडः पततामिव ।
वरः संनह्यमानानामर्जुनः किं करिष्यति ॥२०॥
20. mṛgāṇāmiva śārdūlo garuḍaḥ patatāmiva ,
varaḥ saṁnahyamānānāmarjunaḥ kiṁ kariṣyati.
20. mṛgāṇām iva śārdūlaḥ garuḍaḥ patatām iva |
varaḥ sannahyamānānām arjunaḥ kim kariṣyati
20. He is like a tiger among animals (mṛga), and Garuda among flying creatures. What will Arjuna, who is the best among those arming themselves, do (against him)?
अर्जुन उवाच ।
प्रतिज्ञां षण्ढकोऽस्मीति करिष्यामि महीपते ।
ज्याघातौ हि महान्तौ मे संवर्तुं नृप दुष्करौ ॥२१॥
21. arjuna uvāca ,
pratijñāṁ ṣaṇḍhako'smīti kariṣyāmi mahīpate ,
jyāghātau hi mahāntau me saṁvartuṁ nṛpa duṣkarau.
21. arjunaḥ uvāca | pratijñām ṣaṇḍhakaḥ asmi iti kariṣyāmi
mahīpate | jyāghātau hi mahāntau me saṃvartum nṛpa duṣkarau
21. Arjuna said: 'O King (mahīpate), I will take the vow, "I am a eunuch," because, O King (nṛpa), my two prominent bowstring marks are difficult to conceal.'
कर्णयोः प्रतिमुच्याहं कुण्डले ज्वलनोपमे ।
वेणीकृतशिरा राजन्नाम्ना चैव बृहन्नडा ॥२२॥
22. karṇayoḥ pratimucyāhaṁ kuṇḍale jvalanopame ,
veṇīkṛtaśirā rājannāmnā caiva bṛhannaḍā.
22. karṇayoḥ pratimucya aham kuṇḍale jvalanopame
veṇīkṛtaśirāḥ rājan nāmnā ca eva bṛhannadā
22. O king, having adorned my ears with earrings resembling fire, and with my hair braided, I will be known by the name Brihannala.
पठन्नाख्यायिकां नाम स्त्रीभावेन पुनः पुनः ।
रमयिष्ये महीपालमन्यांश्चान्तःपुरे जनान् ॥२३॥
23. paṭhannākhyāyikāṁ nāma strībhāvena punaḥ punaḥ ,
ramayiṣye mahīpālamanyāṁścāntaḥpure janān.
23. paṭhan ākhyāyikām nāma strībhāvena punaḥ punaḥ
ramayiṣye mahīpālam anyān ca antaḥpure janān
23. Repeatedly reciting various stories and assuming a feminine demeanor, I will entertain the king and other people within the inner palace.
गीतं नृत्तं विचित्रं च वादित्रं विविधं तथा ।
शिक्षयिष्याम्यहं राजन्विराटभवने स्त्रियः ॥२४॥
24. gītaṁ nṛttaṁ vicitraṁ ca vāditraṁ vividhaṁ tathā ,
śikṣayiṣyāmyahaṁ rājanvirāṭabhavane striyaḥ.
24. gītam nṛttam vicitram ca vāditram vividham tathā
śikṣayiṣyāmi aham rājan virāṭabhavane striyaḥ
24. O king, in Virata's palace, I will teach the women various kinds of singing, dancing, and instrumental music.
प्रजानां समुदाचारं बहु कर्मकृतं वदन् ।
छादयिष्यामि कौन्तेय माययात्मानमात्मना ॥२५॥
25. prajānāṁ samudācāraṁ bahu karmakṛtaṁ vadan ,
chādayiṣyāmi kaunteya māyayātmānamātmanā.
25. prajānām samudācāram bahu karmakṛtam vadan
chādayiṣyāmi kaunteya māyayā ātmānam ātmanā
25. O son of Kunti, by speaking extensively about the behavior and many actions (karma) of people, I will conceal my own self (ātman) through my illusion (māyā).
युधिष्ठिरस्य गेहेऽस्मि द्रौपद्याः परिचारिका ।
उषितास्मीति वक्ष्यामि पृष्टो राज्ञा च भारत ॥२६॥
26. yudhiṣṭhirasya gehe'smi draupadyāḥ paricārikā ,
uṣitāsmīti vakṣyāmi pṛṣṭo rājñā ca bhārata.
26. yudhiṣṭhirasya gehe asmi draupadyāḥ paricārikā
uṣitā asmi iti vakṣyāmi pṛṣṭaḥ rājñā ca bhārata
26. O descendant of Bharata, when questioned by the king, I will say, 'I am Draupadi's maidservant, and I have resided in Yudhishthira's house.'
एतेन विधिना छन्नः कृतकेन यथा नलः ।
विहरिष्यामि राजेन्द्र विराटभवने सुखम् ॥२७॥
27. etena vidhinā channaḥ kṛtakena yathā nalaḥ ,
vihariṣyāmi rājendra virāṭabhavane sukham.
27. etena vidhinā channaḥ kṛtakena yathā nalaḥ
vihariṣyāmi rājendra virāṭabhavane sukham
27. O sovereign king, I will live happily in Virata's palace, disguised by this artificial means, just as Nala did.
