प्राग्ज्योतिषो वा पार्थस्य तन्मे शंस यथातथम् ॥१॥

1. Dhritarashtra said: 'Being thus enraged, what did the Pandava (Arjuna) do to Bhagadatta? Or what did the king of Pragjyotisha do to Partha (Arjuna)? Tell me that exactly as it happened.'
संजय उवाच ।
प्राग्ज्योतिषेण संसक्तावुभौ दाशार्हपाण्डवौ ।
मृत्योरिवान्तिकं प्राप्तौ सर्वभूतानि मेनिरे ॥२॥
2. saṁjaya uvāca ,
prāgjyotiṣeṇa saṁsaktāvubhau dāśārhapāṇḍavau ,
mṛtyorivāntikaṁ prāptau sarvabhūtāni menire.

2. Sanjaya said: 'All beings considered that both the Dasharha (Krishna) and the Pandava (Arjuna), when they engaged with the king of Pragjyotisha (Bhagadatta), had approached the very threshold of death.'
तथा हि शरवर्षाणि पातयत्यनिशं प्रभो ।
भगदत्तो गजस्कन्धात्कृष्णयोः स्यन्दनस्थयोः ॥३॥
3. tathā hi śaravarṣāṇi pātayatyaniśaṁ prabho ,
bhagadatto gajaskandhātkṛṣṇayoḥ syandanasthayoḥ.

3. For, O Lord, Bhagadatta, from the shoulder of his elephant, continuously showered arrows upon the two Krishnas (Krishna and Arjuna) who were stationed in their chariot.
अथ कार्ष्णायसैर्बाणैः पूर्णकार्मुकनिःसृतैः ।
अविध्यद्देवकीपुत्रं हेमपुङ्खैः शिलाशितैः ॥४॥
4. atha kārṣṇāyasairbāṇaiḥ pūrṇakārmukaniḥsṛtaiḥ ,
avidhyaddevakīputraṁ hemapuṅkhaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ.

4. Then, with arrows made of black iron, shot from a fully drawn bow, gold-feathered and sharpened on stone, he (Bhagadatta) pierced Devaki's son (Krishna).
अग्निस्पर्शसमास्तीक्ष्णा भगदत्तेन चोदिताः ।
निर्भिद्य देवकीपुत्रं क्षितिं जग्मुः शरास्ततः ॥५॥
5. agnisparśasamāstīkṣṇā bhagadattena coditāḥ ,
nirbhidya devakīputraṁ kṣitiṁ jagmuḥ śarāstataḥ.
5. agni-sparśa-samāḥ tīkṣṇāḥ bhagadattena coditāḥ
nirbhidya devakīputram kṣitim jagmuḥ śarāḥ tataḥ

5. Impelled by Bhagadatta, the sharp arrows, like the touch of fire, having pierced Devaki's son (Krishna), then went into the earth.
तस्य पार्थो धनुश्छित्त्वा शरावापं निहत्य च ।
लाडयन्निव राजानं भगदत्तमयोधयत् ॥६॥
6. tasya pārtho dhanuśchittvā śarāvāpaṁ nihatya ca ,
lāḍayanniva rājānaṁ bhagadattamayodhayat.
6. tasya pārthaḥ dhanuḥ chittvā śarāvāpam nihatya
ca lāḍayan iva rājānam bhagadattam ayodhayat

6. Having cut his (Bhagadatta's) bow and struck down his quiver, Partha (Arjuna) then fought King Bhagadatta as if mocking him.
सोऽर्करश्मिनिभांस्तीक्ष्णांस्तोमरान्वै चतुर्दश ।
प्रेरयत्सव्यसाची तांस्त्रिधैकैकमथाच्छिनत् ॥७॥
7. so'rkaraśminibhāṁstīkṣṇāṁstomarānvai caturdaśa ,
prerayatsavyasācī tāṁstridhaikaikamathācchinat.
7. saḥ arkarasmi-nibhān tīkṣṇān tomarān vai caturdaśa
prerayat savyasācī tān tridhā ekaikam atha acchinat
7. saḥ caturdaśa arkarasmi-nibhān tīkṣṇān tomarān vai

7. He (Bhagadatta) indeed sent forth fourteen sharp javelins (tomaras) resembling sunbeams. Then Savyasachin (Arjuna) cut each one of them into three parts.
ततो नागस्य तद्वर्म व्यधमत्पाकशासनिः ।
शरजालेन स बभौ व्यभ्रः पर्वतराडिव ॥८॥
8. tato nāgasya tadvarma vyadhamatpākaśāsaniḥ ,
śarajālena sa babhau vyabhraḥ parvatarāḍiva.
8. tataḥ nāgasya tat varma vyadhamat pākaśāsaniḥ
śarajālena saḥ babhau vyabhraḥ parvatarāṭ iva
8. tataḥ pākaśāsaniḥ śarajālena nāgasya tat varma

8. Then Arjuna, the son of Indra, shattered that elephant's armor with a volley of arrows. Stripped of its armor, the elephant shone like a cloudless mountain peak.
ततः प्राग्ज्योतिषः शक्तिं हेमदण्डामयस्मयीम् ।
व्यसृजद्वासुदेवाय द्विधा तामर्जुनोऽच्छिनत् ॥९॥
9. tataḥ prāgjyotiṣaḥ śaktiṁ hemadaṇḍāmayasmayīm ,
vyasṛjadvāsudevāya dvidhā tāmarjuno'cchinat.
9. tataḥ prāgjyotiṣaḥ śaktim hemadaṇḍām ayasmayīm
vyasṛjat vāsudevāya dvidhā tām arjunaḥ acchinat
9. tataḥ prāgjyotiṣaḥ hemadaṇḍām ayasmayīm śaktim

9. Then the king of Prāgjyotiṣa (Bhagadatta) hurled a golden-shafted, iron spear (śakti) at Vāsudeva. Arjuna, however, cut that (spear) into two parts.
ततश्छत्रं ध्वजं चैव छित्त्वा राज्ञोऽर्जुनः शरैः ।
विव्याध दशभिस्तूर्णमुत्स्मयन्पर्वताधिपम् ॥१०॥
10. tataśchatraṁ dhvajaṁ caiva chittvā rājño'rjunaḥ śaraiḥ ,
vivyādha daśabhistūrṇamutsmayanparvatādhipam.
10. tataḥ chatram dhvajam ca eva chittvā rājñaḥ arjunaḥ
śaraiḥ vivyādha daśabhiḥ tūrṇam utsmayan parvatādhipam
10. tataḥ arjunaḥ rājñaḥ chatram dhvajam ca eva śaraiḥ
chittvā utsmayan tūrṇam daśabhiḥ parvatādhipam vivyādha
10. Then Arjuna, after cutting down the king's umbrella and banner with his arrows, quickly pierced the lord of mountains (Bhagadatta) with ten (arrows), smiling as he did so.
सोऽतिविद्धोऽर्जुनशरैः सुपुङ्खैः कङ्कपत्रिभिः ।
भगदत्तस्ततः क्रुद्धः पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः ॥११॥
11. so'tividdho'rjunaśaraiḥ supuṅkhaiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ ,
bhagadattastataḥ kruddhaḥ pāṇḍavasya mahātmanaḥ.
11. saḥ atividdhaḥ arjunaśaraiḥ supuṅkhaiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ
bhagadattaḥ tataḥ kruddhaḥ pāṇḍavasya mahātmanaḥ
11. arjunaśaraiḥ supuṅkhaiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ atividdhaḥ
saḥ bhagadattaḥ tataḥ mahātmanaḥ pāṇḍavasya kruddhaḥ
11. Bhagadatta, greatly wounded by Arjuna's well-feathered arrows, fitted with vulture feathers, then became enraged at the great-souled Pāṇḍava (Arjuna).
व्यसृजत्तोमरान्मूर्ध्नि श्वेताश्वस्योन्ननाद च ।
तैरर्जुनस्य समरे किरीटं परिवर्तितम् ॥१२॥
12. vyasṛjattomarānmūrdhni śvetāśvasyonnanāda ca ,
tairarjunasya samare kirīṭaṁ parivartitam.
12. vyasṛjat tomarān mūrdhni śvetāśvasya unnanāda
ca taiḥ arjunasy samare kirīṭaṃ parivartitam
12. śvetāśvasya mūrdhni tomarān vyasṛjat ca unnanāda
samare taiḥ arjunasy kirīṭaṃ parivartitam
12. He discharged javelins onto the head of Arjuna (the one with white horses) and roared. In the battle, Arjuna's diadem was displaced by them.
परिवृत्तं किरीटं तं यमयन्नेव फल्गुनः ।
सुदृष्टः क्रियतां लोक इति राजानमब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. parivṛttaṁ kirīṭaṁ taṁ yamayanneva phalgunaḥ ,
sudṛṣṭaḥ kriyatāṁ loka iti rājānamabravīt.
13. parivṛttaṃ kirīṭaṃ taṃ yamayan eva phalgunaḥ
sudṛṣṭaḥ kriyatāṃ lokaḥ iti rājānaṃ abravīt
13. phalgunaḥ eva taṃ parivṛttaṃ kirīṭaṃ yamayan
rājānaṃ abravīt iti lokaḥ sudṛṣṭaḥ kriyatāṃ
13. As Arjuna was just restraining that dislodged diadem, he said to the king, 'Let the world (loka) observe carefully!'
एवमुक्तस्तु संक्रुद्धः शरवर्षेण पाण्डवम् ।
अभ्यवर्षत्सगोविन्दं धनुरादाय भास्वरम् ॥१४॥
14. evamuktastu saṁkruddhaḥ śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavam ,
abhyavarṣatsagovindaṁ dhanurādāya bhāsvaram.
14. evam uktaḥ tu saṃkruddhaḥ śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavaṃ
abhyavarṣat sagovindaṃ dhanuḥ ādāya bhāsvaram
14. tu evam uktaḥ saṃkruddhaḥ bhāsvaram dhanuḥ ādāya
sagovindaṃ pāṇḍavaṃ śaravarṣeṇa abhyavarṣat
14. However, thus addressed, the very enraged one, taking his radiant bow, showered the Pandava (Arjuna) and Govinda (Krishna) with a volley of arrows.
तस्य पार्थो धनुश्छित्त्वा तूणीरान्संनिकृत्य च ।
त्वरमाणो द्विसप्तत्या सर्वमर्मस्वताडयत् ॥१५॥
15. tasya pārtho dhanuśchittvā tūṇīrānsaṁnikṛtya ca ,
tvaramāṇo dvisaptatyā sarvamarmasvatāḍayat.
15. tasy pārthaḥ dhanuḥ chittvā tūṇīrān saṃnikṛtya
ca tvaramāṇaḥ dvisaptatyā sarvamarmasu atāḍayat
15. pārthaḥ tasy dhanuḥ chittvā ca tūṇīrān saṃnikṛtya
tvaramāṇaḥ dvisaptatyā sarvamarmasu atāḍayat
15. Having cut his opponent's bow and also sliced his quivers, Partha (Arjuna), hurrying, struck him on all his vital spots with seventy-two arrows.
विद्धस्तथाप्यव्यथितो वैष्णवास्त्रमुदीरयन् ।
अभिमन्त्र्याङ्कुशं क्रुद्धो व्यसृजत्पाण्डवोरसि ॥१६॥
16. viddhastathāpyavyathito vaiṣṇavāstramudīrayan ,
abhimantryāṅkuśaṁ kruddho vyasṛjatpāṇḍavorasi.
16. viddhaḥ tathā api avyathitaḥ vaiṣṇavāstram udīrayan
abhimantrya aṅkuśam kruddhaḥ vyasṛjat pāṇḍavorasi
16. tathā api viddhaḥ avyathitaḥ kruddhaḥ vaiṣṇavāstram
udīrayan aṅkuśam abhimantrya pāṇḍavorasi vyasṛjat
16. Though wounded, he remained unperturbed. Invoking the Vaiṣṇava missile (astra), he consecrated his goad and, enraged, hurled it at the chest of the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna).
विसृष्टं भगदत्तेन तदस्त्रं सर्वघातकम् ।
उरसा प्रतिजग्राह पार्थं संछाद्य केशवः ॥१७॥
17. visṛṣṭaṁ bhagadattena tadastraṁ sarvaghātakam ,
urasā pratijagrāha pārthaṁ saṁchādya keśavaḥ.
17. visṛṣṭam bhagadattena tat astram sarvaghātakam
urasā pratijagrāha pārtham saṃchādya keśavaḥ
17. bhagadattena visṛṣṭam tat sarvaghātakam astram
keśavaḥ pārtham saṃchādya urasā pratijagrāha
17. That all-destroying missile, hurled by Bhagadatta, Keśava (Krishna) received with his own chest, thereby protecting Pārtha (Arjuna).
वैजयन्त्यभवन्माला तदस्त्रं केशवोरसि ।
ततोऽर्जुनः क्लान्तमनाः केशवं प्रत्यभाषत ॥१८॥
18. vaijayantyabhavanmālā tadastraṁ keśavorasi ,
tato'rjunaḥ klāntamanāḥ keśavaṁ pratyabhāṣata.
18. vaijayantī abhavat mālā tat astram keśavorasi
tataḥ arjunaḥ klāntamanāḥ keśavam prati abhāṣata
18. tat astram keśavorasi vaijayantī mālā abhavat
tataḥ klāntamanāḥ arjunaḥ keśavam prati abhāṣata
18. That missile, upon Keśava's (Krishna's) chest, transformed into a Vaijayantī (garland). Then, Arjuna, disheartened, addressed Keśava.
अयुध्यमानस्तुरगान्संयन्तास्मि जनार्दन ।
इत्युक्त्वा पुण्डरीकाक्ष प्रतिज्ञां स्वां न रक्षसि ॥१९॥
19. ayudhyamānasturagānsaṁyantāsmi janārdana ,
ityuktvā puṇḍarīkākṣa pratijñāṁ svāṁ na rakṣasi.
19. ayudhyamānaḥ turagān saṃyantā asmi janārdana
iti uktvā puṇḍarīkākṣa pratijñām svām na rakṣasi
19. janārdana ayudhyamānaḥ turagān saṃyantā asmi
iti uktvā puṇḍarīkākṣa svām pratijñām na rakṣasi
19. 'I shall be the charioteer, controlling the horses and not fighting, O Janārdana (Krishna).' Having made this statement, O lotus-eyed one (Krishna), you are not keeping your own promise.
यद्यहं व्यसनी वा स्यामशक्तो वा निवारणे ।
ततस्त्वयैवं कार्यं स्यान्न तु कार्यं मयि स्थिते ॥२०॥
20. yadyahaṁ vyasanī vā syāmaśakto vā nivāraṇe ,
tatastvayaivaṁ kāryaṁ syānna tu kāryaṁ mayi sthite.
20. yadi aham vyasanī vā syām aśaktaḥ vā nivāraṇe tataḥ
tvayā evam kāryam syāt na tu kāryam mayi sthite
20. yadi aham vyasanī vā aśaktaḥ vā nivāraṇe syām,
tataḥ evam kāryam tvayā syāt; tu mayi sthite kāryam na.
20. If I were indeed afflicted or unable to prevent it, then this task should be performed by you; but it should certainly not be performed while I am present.
सबाणः सधनुश्चाहं ससुरासुरमानवान् ।
शक्तो लोकानिमाञ्जेतुं तच्चापि विदितं तव ॥२१॥
21. sabāṇaḥ sadhanuścāhaṁ sasurāsuramānavān ,
śakto lokānimāñjetuṁ taccāpi viditaṁ tava.
21. sa-bāṇaḥ sa-dhanuḥ ca aham sa-sura-asura-mānavān
śaktaḥ lokān imān jetum tat ca api viditam tava
21. aham sa-bāṇaḥ sa-dhanuḥ ca,
sa-sura-asura-mānavān imān lokān jetum śaktaḥ.
tat ca api tava viditam.
21. I am equipped with arrows and a bow, capable of conquering these worlds along with their gods, asuras, and humans. And that, too, is well known to you.
ततोऽर्जुनं वासुदेवः प्रत्युवाचार्थवद्वचः ।
शृणु गुह्यमिदं पार्थ यथा वृत्तं पुरानघ ॥२२॥
22. tato'rjunaṁ vāsudevaḥ pratyuvācārthavadvacaḥ ,
śṛṇu guhyamidaṁ pārtha yathā vṛttaṁ purānagha.
22. tataḥ arjunam vāsudevaḥ prati uvāca artha-vat vacaḥ
śṛṇu guhyam idam pārtha yathā vṛttam purā anagha
22. tataḥ vāsudevaḥ arjunam artha-vat vacaḥ prati uvāca.
he pārtha,
he anagha,
yathā purā vṛttam,
idam guhyam śṛṇu.
22. Then Vāsudeva replied to Arjuna with meaningful words. "Listen, O Pārtha, to this secret, how it happened in the past, O sinless one."
चतुर्मूर्तिरहं शश्वल्लोकत्राणार्थमुद्यतः ।
आत्मानं प्रविभज्येह लोकानां हितमादधे ॥२३॥
23. caturmūrtirahaṁ śaśvallokatrāṇārthamudyataḥ ,
ātmānaṁ pravibhajyeha lokānāṁ hitamādadhe.
23. catuḥ-mūrtiḥ aham śaśvat loka-trāṇa-artham udyataḥ
ātmānam pra-vibhajya iha lokānām hitam ādadhe
23. aham catuḥ-mūrtiḥ,
śaśvat loka-trāṇa-artham udyataḥ.
iha ātmānam pra-vibhajya,
lokānām hitam ādadhe.
23. I am the four-formed one, perpetually ready for the protection of the worlds. By dividing my own self (ātman) here, I bring about the welfare of all beings.
एका मूर्तिस्तपश्चर्यां कुरुते मे भुवि स्थिता ।
अपरा पश्यति जगत्कुर्वाणं साध्वसाधुनी ॥२४॥
24. ekā mūrtistapaścaryāṁ kurute me bhuvi sthitā ,
aparā paśyati jagatkurvāṇaṁ sādhvasādhunī.
24. ekā mūrtiḥ tapaścaryām kurute me bhuvi sthitā
| aparā paśyati jagat kurvāṇam sādhvasādhunī
24. me ekā mūrtiḥ bhuvi sthitā tapaścaryām kurute
aparā jagat sādhvasādhunī kurvāṇam paśyati
24. One of my forms (mūrti), established on earth, performs ascetic practices (tapas). Another form observes the world engaging in both good and bad actions.
अपरा कुरुते कर्म मानुषं लोकमाश्रिता ।
शेते चतुर्थी त्वपरा निद्रां वर्षसहस्रिकाम् ॥२५॥
25. aparā kurute karma mānuṣaṁ lokamāśritā ,
śete caturthī tvaparā nidrāṁ varṣasahasrikām.
25. aparā kurute karma mānuṣam lokam āśritā |
śete caturthī tu aparā nidrām varṣasahasrikām
25. aparā mānuṣam lokam āśritā karma kurute
caturthī tu aparā varṣasahasrikām nidrām śete
25. Another form performs human actions (karma), residing in the human world. And yet another, the fourth, sleeps a thousand-year sleep.
यासौ वर्षसहस्रान्ते मूर्तिरुत्तिष्ठते मम ।
वरार्हेभ्यो वराञ्श्रेष्ठांस्तस्मिन्काले ददाति सा ॥२६॥
26. yāsau varṣasahasrānte mūrtiruttiṣṭhate mama ,
varārhebhyo varāñśreṣṭhāṁstasminkāle dadāti sā.
26. yā asau varṣasahasra ante mūrtiḥ uttiṣṭhate mama |
vara arhebhyaḥ varān śreṣṭhān tasmin kāle dadāti sā
26. yā asau mama mūrtiḥ varṣasahasra ante uttiṣṭhate sā
tasmin kāle vara arhebhyaḥ śreṣṭhān varān dadāti
26. That form (mūrti) of mine, which arises at the end of a thousand years, at that time grants the best boons to those who are worthy of boons.
तं तु कालमनुप्राप्तं विदित्वा पृथिवी तदा ।
प्रायाचत वरं यं मां नरकार्थाय तं शृणु ॥२७॥
27. taṁ tu kālamanuprāptaṁ viditvā pṛthivī tadā ,
prāyācata varaṁ yaṁ māṁ narakārthāya taṁ śṛṇu.
27. tam tu kālam anuprāptam viditvā pṛthivī tadā |
prāyācata varam yam mām narakaarthāya tam śṛṇu
27. tada pṛthivī tam anuprāptam kālam viditvā yam varam narakaarthāya mām prāyācata,
tam śṛṇu
27. When the Earth (pṛthivī) then knew that time had arrived, she entreated me for a boon concerning hell; hear about that boon.
देवानामसुराणां च अवध्यस्तनयोऽस्तु मे ।
उपेतो वैष्णवास्त्रेण तन्मे त्वं दातुमर्हसि ॥२८॥
28. devānāmasurāṇāṁ ca avadhyastanayo'stu me ,
upeto vaiṣṇavāstreṇa tanme tvaṁ dātumarhasi.
28. devānām asurāṇām ca avadhyaḥ tanayaḥ astu me
upetaḥ vaiṣṇavāstreṇa tat me tvam dātum arhasi
28. me tanayaḥ devānām asurāṇām ca avadhyaḥ vaiṣṇavāstreṇa upetaḥ astu.
tvam tat me dātum arhasi
28. Let my son be invincible (avadhya) by gods and asuras, and endowed with the Vaiṣṇava missile (astra). You should grant me that.
एवं वरमहं श्रुत्वा जगत्यास्तनये तदा ।
अमोघमस्त्रमददं वैष्णवं तदहं पुरा ॥२९॥
29. evaṁ varamahaṁ śrutvā jagatyāstanaye tadā ,
amoghamastramadadaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ tadahaṁ purā.
29. evam varam aham śrutvā jagatyāḥ tanaye tadā
amogham astram adadam vaiṣṇavam tat aham purā
29. evam varam aham śrutvā tadā jagatyāḥ tanaye
tat vaiṣṇavam amogham astram purā adadam
29. Having heard such a boon from the son of the Earth (Bhūmi) then, I formerly granted that infallible Vaiṣṇava missile (astra).
अवोचं चैतदस्त्रं वै ह्यमोघं भवतु क्षमे ।
नरकस्याभिरक्षार्थं नैनं कश्चिद्वधिष्यति ॥३०॥
30. avocaṁ caitadastraṁ vai hyamoghaṁ bhavatu kṣame ,
narakasyābhirakṣārthaṁ nainaṁ kaścidvadhiṣyati.
30. avocam ca etat astram vai hi amogham bhavatu kṣame
narakasya abhirakṣārtham na enam kaścit vadhiṣyati
30. kṣame ca avocat hi etat astram vai amogham bhavatu.
narakasya abhirakṣārtham kaścit enam na vadhiṣyati.
30. And I declared to the Earth (Kṣamā): 'Indeed, this missile (astra) shall be infallible. For the protection of Naraka, no one will be able to kill him.'
अनेनास्त्रेण ते गुप्तः सुतः परबलार्दनः ।
भविष्यति दुराधर्षः सर्वलोकेषु सर्वदा ॥३१॥
31. anenāstreṇa te guptaḥ sutaḥ parabalārdanaḥ ,
bhaviṣyati durādharṣaḥ sarvalokeṣu sarvadā.
31. anena astreṇa te guptaḥ sutaḥ parabalārdanaḥ
bhaviṣyati durādharṣaḥ sarvalokeṣu sarvadā
31. te sutaḥ anena astreṇa guptaḥ parabalārdanaḥ sarvadā sarvalokeṣu durādharṣaḥ bhaviṣyati.
31. Protected by this missile (astra), your son, the tormentor of enemy forces, will always be invincible in all worlds.
तथेत्युक्त्वा गता देवी कृतकामा मनस्विनी ।
स चाप्यासीद्दुराधर्षो नरकः शत्रुतापनः ॥३२॥
32. tathetyuktvā gatā devī kṛtakāmā manasvinī ,
sa cāpyāsīddurādharṣo narakaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ.
32. tathā iti uktvā gatā devī kṛtakāmā manasvinī
saḥ ca api āsīt durādharṣaḥ narakaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ
32. tathā iti uktvā kṛtakāmā manasvinī devī gatā ca
saḥ narakaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ api durādharṣaḥ āsīt
32. Having said, 'So be it,' the high-minded goddess, her wish fulfilled, departed. And that Naraka (Naraka) became invincible, a tormentor of enemies.
तस्मात्प्राग्ज्योतिषं प्राप्तं तदस्त्रं पार्थ मामकम् ।
नास्यावध्योऽस्ति लोकेषु सेन्द्ररुद्रेषु मारिष ॥३३॥
33. tasmātprāgjyotiṣaṁ prāptaṁ tadastraṁ pārtha māmakam ,
nāsyāvadhyo'sti lokeṣu sendrarudreṣu māriṣa.
33. tasmāt prāgjyotiṣam prāptam tat astram pārtha māmakam
na asya avadhyaḥ asti lokeṣu sa-indra-rudreṣu māriṣa
33. pārtha māriṣa tasmāt prāgjyotiṣam prāptam tat māmakam
astram asya avadhyaḥ lokeṣu sa-indra-rudreṣu na asti
33. Therefore, O Pārtha, that weapon (astra) of mine, which reached Prāgjyotiṣa, has no one whom it cannot kill among all the worlds, O respected one, not even those inhabited by Indra and Rudra.
तन्मया त्वत्कृतेनैतदन्यथा व्यपनाशितम् ।
वियुक्तं परमास्त्रेण जहि पार्थ महासुरम् ॥३४॥
34. tanmayā tvatkṛtenaitadanyathā vyapanāśitam ,
viyuktaṁ paramāstreṇa jahi pārtha mahāsuram.
34. tat mayā tvat-kṛtena etat anyathā vyapanāśitam
viyuktam parama-astreṇa jahi pārtha mahā-asuram
34. pārtha tat mayā tvat-kṛtena etat anyathā vyapanāśitam
(saḥ) parama-astreṇa viyuktam mahā-asuram jahi
34. Therefore, that [power] has been undone by me for your sake. Now, O Pārtha, kill this great demon (mahāsura), for he has been deprived of his supreme weapon (paramāstra).
वैरिणं युधि दुर्धर्षं भगदत्तं सुरद्विषम् ।
यथाहं जघ्निवान्पूर्वं हितार्थं नरकं तथा ॥३५॥
35. vairiṇaṁ yudhi durdharṣaṁ bhagadattaṁ suradviṣam ,
yathāhaṁ jaghnivānpūrvaṁ hitārthaṁ narakaṁ tathā.
35. vairiṇam yudhi durādharṣam bhagadattam sura-dviṣam
yathā aham jaghni-vān pūrvam hita-artham narakam tathā
35. yathā aham pūrvam hitārtham yudhi
durādharṣam sura-dviṣam narakam jaghni-vān
tathā [tvam] yudhi durādharṣam
sura-dviṣam vairiṇam bhagadattam [jahi]
35. Just as I formerly killed Naraka (Naraka) - an unassailable enemy of the gods (suradvṣa) in battle, for the sake of welfare (hitārtham) - so [you should kill] Bhagadatta (Bhagadatta), the enemy, unassailable in battle, and foe of the gods.
एवमुक्तस्ततः पार्थः केशवेन महात्मना ।
भगदत्तं शितैर्बाणैः सहसा समवाकिरत् ॥३६॥
36. evamuktastataḥ pārthaḥ keśavena mahātmanā ,
bhagadattaṁ śitairbāṇaiḥ sahasā samavākirat.
36. evam uktaḥ tataḥ pārthaḥ keśavena mahātmanā
bhagadattam śitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ sahasā samavākirat
36. केशवेन महात्मना एवम् उक्तः ततः पार्थः
सहसा शितैः बाणैः भगदत्तम् समवाकिरत्
36. Thus addressed by the great-souled Kṛṣṇa, Arjuna then suddenly overwhelmed Bhagadatta with sharp arrows.
ततः पार्थो महाबाहुरसंभ्रान्तो महामनाः ।
कुम्भयोरन्तरे नागं नाराचेन समार्पयत् ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ pārtho mahābāhurasaṁbhrānto mahāmanāḥ ,
kumbhayorantare nāgaṁ nārācena samārpayat.
37. tataḥ pārthaḥ mahābāhuḥ asaṃbhrāntaḥ mahāmanāḥ
kumbhayoḥ antare nāgam nārācena samārpayat
37. ततः महाबाहुः असंभ्रान्तः महामनाः पार्थः
कुम्भयोः अन्तरे नाराचेन नागम् समार्पयत्
37. Then Arjuna, mighty-armed, undaunted, and high-minded, pierced the elephant between its two temples with an iron arrow.
समासाद्य तु तं नागं बाणो वज्र इवाचलम् ।
अभ्यगात्सह पुङ्खेन वल्मीकमिव पन्नगः ॥३८॥
38. samāsādya tu taṁ nāgaṁ bāṇo vajra ivācalam ,
abhyagātsaha puṅkhena valmīkamiva pannagaḥ.
38. samāsādya tu tam nāgam bāṇaḥ vajraḥ iva acalam
abhyagāt saha puṅkhena valmīkam iva pannagaḥ
38. तु तम् नागम् समासाद्य बाणः वज्रः अचलम् इव
पुङ्खेन सह वल्मीकम् इव पन्नगः अभ्यगात्
38. The arrow, having struck that elephant like a thunderbolt strikes a mountain, penetrated completely with its shaft, just as a snake enters an anthill.
स तु विष्टभ्य गात्राणि दन्ताभ्यामवनिं ययौ ।
नदन्नार्तस्वरं प्राणानुत्ससर्ज महाद्विपः ॥३९॥
39. sa tu viṣṭabhya gātrāṇi dantābhyāmavaniṁ yayau ,
nadannārtasvaraṁ prāṇānutsasarja mahādvipaḥ.
39. saḥ tu viṣṭabhya gātrāṇi dantābhyām avanim yayau
nadan ārtasvaram prāṇān utsasarja mahādvipaḥ
39. तु सः महाद्विपः गात्राणि विष्टभ्य दन्ताभ्याम्
अवनिम् ययौ आर्तस्वरम् नदन् प्राणान् उत्ससर्ज
39. That great elephant, bracing its limbs, fell to the ground on its tusks; trumpeting a painful cry, it gave up its life (prāṇa).
ततश्चन्द्रार्धबिम्बेन शरेण नतपर्वणा ।
बिभेद हृदयं राज्ञो भगदत्तस्य पाण्डवः ॥४०॥
40. tataścandrārdhabimbena śareṇa nataparvaṇā ,
bibheda hṛdayaṁ rājño bhagadattasya pāṇḍavaḥ.
40. tataḥ candrārdhabimbena śareṇa nataparvaṇā
bibheda hṛdayam rājñaḥ bhagadattasya pāṇḍavaḥ
40. tataḥ pāṇḍavaḥ candrārdhabimbena nataparvaṇā
śareṇa rājñaḥ bhagadattasya hṛdayam bibheda
40. Then, the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) pierced the heart of King Bhagadatta with a crescent-moon-tipped arrow that had a well-formed shaft.
स भिन्नहृदयो राजा भगदत्तः किरीटिना ।
शरासनं शरांश्चैव गतासुः प्रमुमोच ह ॥४१॥
41. sa bhinnahṛdayo rājā bhagadattaḥ kirīṭinā ,
śarāsanaṁ śarāṁścaiva gatāsuḥ pramumoca ha.
41. saḥ bhinnahr̥dayaḥ rājā bhagadattaḥ kirīṭinā
śarāsanam śarān ca eva gatāsuḥ pramumoca ha
41. kirīṭinā bhinnahr̥dayaḥ saḥ rājā bhagadattaḥ
gatāsuḥ śarāsanam śarān ca eva ha pramumoca
41. His heart pierced by the one wearing the diadem (Arjuna), King Bhagadatta, now lifeless, dropped his bow and arrows.
शिरसस्तस्य विभ्रष्टः पपात च वराङ्कुशः ।
नालताडनविभ्रष्टं पलाशं नलिनादिव ॥४२॥
42. śirasastasya vibhraṣṭaḥ papāta ca varāṅkuśaḥ ,
nālatāḍanavibhraṣṭaṁ palāśaṁ nalinādiva.
42. śirasaḥ tasya vibhraṣṭaḥ papāta ca varāṅkuśaḥ
nālatāḍanavibhraṣṭam palāśam nalināt iva
42. ca tasya śirasaḥ varāṅkuśaḥ vibhraṣṭaḥ papāta
nālatāḍanavibhraṣṭam palāśam nalināt iva
42. And his excellent elephant-goad fell from his head, just as a leaf falls from a lotus due to the shaking of its stalk.
स हेममाली तपनीयभाण्डात्पपात नागाद्गिरिसंनिकाशात् ।
सुपुष्पितो मारुतवेगरुग्णो महीधराग्रादिव कर्णिकारः ॥४३॥
43. sa hemamālī tapanīyabhāṇḍā;tpapāta nāgādgirisaṁnikāśāt ,
supuṣpito mārutavegarugṇo; mahīdharāgrādiva karṇikāraḥ.
43. saḥ hemamālī tapanīyabhāṇḍāt papāta nāgāt girisaṃnikāśāt
supuṣpitaḥ mārutavegarugṇaḥ mahīdharāgrāt iva karṇikāraḥ
43. saḥ hemamālī girisaṃnikāśāt tapanīyabhāṇḍāt nāgāt papāta
supuṣpitaḥ mārutavegarugṇaḥ karṇikāraḥ mahīdharāgrāt iva
43. Adorned with a golden garland, he fell from the mountain-like, gold-decorated elephant, just as a richly bloomed karṇikāra tree, broken by the force of the wind, falls from a mountain peak.
निहत्य तं नरपतिमिन्द्रविक्रमं सखायमिन्द्रस्य तथैन्द्रिराहवे ।
ततोऽपरांस्तव जयकाङ्क्षिणो नरान्बभञ्ज वायुर्बलवान्द्रुमानिव ॥४४॥
44. nihatya taṁ narapatimindravikramaṁ; sakhāyamindrasya tathaindrirāhave ,
tato'parāṁstava jayakāṅkṣiṇo narā;nbabhañja vāyurbalavāndrumāniva.
44. nihatya tam narapatim indravikramam
sakhāyam indrasya tathā aindriḥ āhave
| tataḥ aparān tu jayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
narān babhañja vāyuḥ balavān drumān iva
44. aindriḥ āhave indravikramam indrasya sakhāyam tam narapatim nihatya,
tataḥ tu jayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ aparān narān balavān vāyuḥ drumān iva babhañja.
44. After killing that king, who was mighty as Indra and a friend of Indra, Arjuna (aindri) then shattered other men who desired victory in battle, just as a powerful wind breaks trees.
