अधर्मेण हतं श्रुत्वा धृष्टद्युम्नेन संजय ।
ब्राह्मणं पितरं वृद्धमश्वत्थामा किमब्रवीत् ॥१॥

adharmeṇa hataṁ śrutvā dhṛṣṭadyumnena saṁjaya ,
brāhmaṇaṁ pitaraṁ vṛddhamaśvatthāmā kimabravīt.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: Sañjaya, having heard that the old Brahmin, his father, was killed by Dhṛṣṭadyumna through unrighteousness (adharma), what did Aśvatthāmā say?
मानुषं वारुणाग्नेयं ब्राह्ममस्त्रं च वीर्यवान् ।
ऐन्द्रं नारायणं चैव यस्मिन्नित्यं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥२॥
2. mānuṣaṁ vāruṇāgneyaṁ brāhmamastraṁ ca vīryavān ,
aindraṁ nārāyaṇaṁ caiva yasminnityaṁ pratiṣṭhitam.
2. mānuṣam vāruṇāgneyam brāhmam astram ca vīryavān
aindram nārāyaṇam ca eva yasmin nityam pratiṣṭhitam

2. In whom are eternally established the human weapon, the weapon associated with Varuṇa and Agni, the Brahmā weapon, and indeed the Indra and Nārāyaṇa weapons, and who is mighty.
तमधर्मेण धर्मिष्ठं धृष्टद्युम्नेन संजय ।
श्रुत्वा निहतमाचार्यमश्वत्थामा किमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. tamadharmeṇa dharmiṣṭhaṁ dhṛṣṭadyumnena saṁjaya ,
śrutvā nihatamācāryamaśvatthāmā kimabravīt.

3. O Sañjaya, what did Aśvatthāmā say after hearing that the most righteous teacher was slain by Dhṛṣṭadyumna through an unrighteous (adharma) act?
येन रामादवाप्येह धनुर्वेदं महात्मना ।
प्रोक्तान्यस्त्राणि दिव्यानि पुत्राय गुरुकाङ्क्षिणे ॥४॥
4. yena rāmādavāpyeha dhanurvedaṁ mahātmanā ,
proktānyastrāṇi divyāni putrāya gurukāṅkṣiṇe.

proktāni astrāṇi divyāni putrāya gurukāṅkṣiṇe

4. By which great soul (mahātman), who, having obtained the science of archery (dhanurveda) from Rāma here, divine weapons were taught to his son who longed for a teacher (guru).
एकमेव हि लोकेऽस्मिन्नात्मनो गुणवत्तरम् ।
इच्छन्ति पुत्रं पुरुषा लोके नान्यं कथंचन ॥५॥
5. ekameva hi loke'sminnātmano guṇavattaram ,
icchanti putraṁ puruṣā loke nānyaṁ kathaṁcana.
5. ekam eva hi loke asmin ātmanaḥ guṇavattaram
icchanti putram puruṣāḥ loke na anyam kathaṃcana
5. hi asmin loke puruṣāḥ ātmanaḥ guṇavattaram ekam
putram eva icchanti na kathaṃcana anyam loke
5. Indeed, in this world, men (puruṣa) desire only one son (putra) who is more virtuous than themselves (ātman), and certainly no other in any way.
आचार्याणां भवन्त्येव रहस्यानि महात्मनाम् ।
तानि पुत्राय वा दद्युः शिष्यायानुगताय वा ॥६॥
6. ācāryāṇāṁ bhavantyeva rahasyāni mahātmanām ,
tāni putrāya vā dadyuḥ śiṣyāyānugatāya vā.
6. ācāryāṇām bhavanti eva rahasyāni mahātmanām
tāni putrāya vā dadyuḥ śiṣyāya anugatāya vā
6. mahātmanām ācāryāṇām rahasyāni bhavanti eva
tāni putrāya vā anugatāya śiṣyāya vā dadyuḥ
6. Great souls (mahātman) who are teachers (ācārya) certainly possess secrets. They should impart those secrets either to a son or to a devoted disciple.
स शिल्पं प्राप्य तत्सर्वं सविशेषं च संजय ।
शूरः शारद्वतीपुत्रः संख्ये द्रोणादनन्तरः ॥७॥
7. sa śilpaṁ prāpya tatsarvaṁ saviśeṣaṁ ca saṁjaya ,
śūraḥ śāradvatīputraḥ saṁkhye droṇādanantaraḥ.
7. saḥ śilpam prāpya tat sarvam saviśeṣam ca sañjaya
śūraḥ śāradvatīputraḥ saṅkhye droṇāt anantaraḥ
7. sañjaya saḥ śāradvatīputraḥ śūraḥ tat sarvam śilpam
saviśeṣam ca prāpya saṅkhye droṇāt anantaraḥ
7. O Sañjaya, having acquired all that skill, and even in a special way, that heroic son of Śāradvatī (Kṛpa) was next only to Droṇa in battle.
रामस्यानुमतः शास्त्रे पुरंदरसमो युधि ।
कार्तवीर्यसमो वीर्ये बृहस्पतिसमो मतौ ॥८॥
8. rāmasyānumataḥ śāstre puraṁdarasamo yudhi ,
kārtavīryasamo vīrye bṛhaspatisamo matau.
8. rāmasya anumataḥ śāstre purandarasamaḥ yudhi
kārtavīryasamaḥ vīrye bṛhaspatisamaḥ matau
8. saḥ rāmasya anumataḥ śāstre yudhi
purandarasamaḥ vīrye kārtavīryasamaḥ matau
8. He was approved by Rāma in scriptural knowledge, equal to Purandara (Indra) in battle, equal to Kārtavīrya in valor, and equal to Bṛhaspati in counsel.
महीधरसमो धृत्या तेजसाग्निसमो युवा ।
समुद्र इव गाम्भीर्ये क्रोधे सर्पविषोपमः ॥९॥
9. mahīdharasamo dhṛtyā tejasāgnisamo yuvā ,
samudra iva gāmbhīrye krodhe sarpaviṣopamaḥ.
9. mahīdharasamaḥ dhṛtyā tejasā agnisamaḥ yuvā
samudraḥ iva gāmbhīrye krodhe sarpaviṣopamaḥ
9. saḥ yuvā dhṛtyā mahīdharasamaḥ tejasā agnisamaḥ
gāmbhīrye samudraḥ iva krodhe sarpaviṣopamaḥ
9. Young, he was like a mountain in steadfastness, like fire in brilliance, like the ocean in profundity, and like serpent's venom in anger.
स रथी प्रथमो लोके दृढधन्वा जितक्लमः ।
शीघ्रोऽनिल इवाक्रन्दे चरन्क्रुद्ध इवान्तकः ॥१०॥
10. sa rathī prathamo loke dṛḍhadhanvā jitaklamaḥ ,
śīghro'nila ivākrande carankruddha ivāntakaḥ.
10. saḥ rathī prathamaḥ loke dṛḍhadhanvā jitaklamaḥ
śīghraḥ anilaḥ iva ākrande caran kruddhaḥ iva antakaḥ
10. saḥ dṛḍhadhanvā jitaklamaḥ loke prathamaḥ rathī
ākrande anilaḥ iva śīghraḥ kruddhaḥ antakaḥ iva caran
10. He is the foremost charioteer in the world, possessing a firm bow and having overcome all weariness. In battle, he moves swiftly like the wind, resembling enraged Death (Antaka).
अस्यता येन संग्रामे धरण्यभिनिपीडिता ।
यो न व्यथति संग्रामे वीरः सत्यपराक्रमः ॥११॥
11. asyatā yena saṁgrāme dharaṇyabhinipīḍitā ,
yo na vyathati saṁgrāme vīraḥ satyaparākramaḥ.
11. asyatā yena saṅgrāme dharaṇī abhinipīḍitā yaḥ
na vyathati saṅgrāme vīraḥ satyaparākramaḥ
11. yena asyatā saṅgrāme dharaṇī abhinipīḍitā.
yaḥ satyaparākramaḥ vīraḥ saṅgrāme na vyathati.
11. He by whom the earth was pressed down in battle as he shot, and who, a hero of true valor, is never disturbed in battle.
वेदस्नातो व्रतस्नातो धनुर्वेदे च पारगः ।
महोदधिरिवाक्षोभ्यो रामो दाशरथिर्यथा ॥१२॥
12. vedasnāto vratasnāto dhanurvede ca pāragaḥ ,
mahodadhirivākṣobhyo rāmo dāśarathiryathā.
12. vedasnātaḥ vratasnātaḥ dhanurvede ca pāragaḥ
mahodadhiḥ iva akṣobhyaḥ rāmaḥ dāśarathiḥ yathā
12. vedasnātaḥ vratasnātaḥ ca dhanurvede pāragaḥ.
mahodadhiḥ iva akṣobhyaḥ,
yathā rāmaḥ dāśarathiḥ.
12. He is accomplished in Vedic studies, having fulfilled his vows, and is proficient in the science of archery (Dhanurveda). He is as unshaken as a great ocean, just like Rama, the son of Daśaratha.
तमधर्मेण धर्मिष्ठं धृष्टद्युम्नेन संयुगे ।
श्रुत्वा निहतमाचार्यमश्वत्थामा किमब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. tamadharmeṇa dharmiṣṭhaṁ dhṛṣṭadyumnena saṁyuge ,
śrutvā nihatamācāryamaśvatthāmā kimabravīt.
13. tam adharmeṇa dharmiṣṭham dhṛṣṭadyumnena saṃyuge
śrutvā nihatam ācāryam aśvatthāmā kim abravīt
13. adharmeṇa dhṛṣṭadyumnena saṃyuge dharmiṣṭham tam
ācāryam nihatam śrutvā aśvatthāmā kim abravīt?
13. Having heard that his preceptor (Ācārya) (Droṇa), who was most steadfast in natural law (dharma), was unrighteously killed in battle by Dhṛṣṭadyumna, what did Aśvatthāmā say?
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य यो मृत्युः सृष्टस्तेन महात्मना ।
यथा द्रोणस्य पाञ्चाल्यो यज्ञसेनसुतोऽभवत् ॥१४॥
14. dhṛṣṭadyumnasya yo mṛtyuḥ sṛṣṭastena mahātmanā ,
yathā droṇasya pāñcālyo yajñasenasuto'bhavat.
14. dhṛṣṭadyumnasya yaḥ mṛtyuḥ sṛṣṭaḥ tena mahātmanā
yathā droṇasya pāñcālyaḥ yajñasenasutaḥ abhavat
14. yaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya mṛtyuḥ tena mahātmanā sṛṣṭaḥ
yathā pāñcālyaḥ yajñasenasutaḥ droṇasya abhavat
14. He who is the destined destroyer of Dhṛṣṭadyumna was created by that great soul (ātman), just as the Pāñcāla prince, the son of Yajñasena, became the destroyer for Droṇa.
तं नृशंसेन पापेन क्रूरेणात्यल्पदर्शिना ।
श्रुत्वा निहतमाचार्यमश्वत्थामा किमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. taṁ nṛśaṁsena pāpena krūreṇātyalpadarśinā ,
śrutvā nihatamācāryamaśvatthāmā kimabravīt.
15. tam nṛśaṃsena pāpena krūreṇa atyalpadarśinā
śrutvā nihatam ācāryam aśvatthāmā kim abravīt
15. aśvatthāmā nṛśaṃsena pāpena krūreṇa atyalpadarśinā
tam ācāryam nihatam śrutvā kim abravīt
15. What did Aśvatthāman say upon hearing that the preceptor (Droṇa) had been slain by that wicked, cruel, and extremely short-sighted person?
संजय उवाच ।
छद्मना निहतं श्रुत्वा पितरं पापकर्मणा ।
बाष्पेणापूर्यत द्रौणी रोषेण च नरर्षभ ॥१६॥
16. saṁjaya uvāca ,
chadmanā nihataṁ śrutvā pitaraṁ pāpakarmaṇā ,
bāṣpeṇāpūryata drauṇī roṣeṇa ca nararṣabha.
16. saṃjaya uvāca chadmanā nihatam śrutvā pitaram
pāpakarmaṇā bāṣpeṇa apūryata drauṇī roṣeṇa ca nararṣabha
16. saṃjaya uvāca he nararṣabha pāpakarmaṇā chadmanā
nihatam pitaram śrutvā drauṇī bāṣpeṇa ca roṣeṇa apūryata
16. Sañjaya said: O best among men (nararṣabha), having heard that his father was slain by deceit by the perpetrator of sinful deeds (karma), Droṇa's son (Drauṇī) was filled with both tears and rage.
तस्य क्रुद्धस्य राजेन्द्र वपुर्दिव्यमदृश्यत ।
अन्तकस्येव भूतानि जिहीर्षोः कालपर्यये ॥१७॥
17. tasya kruddhasya rājendra vapurdivyamadṛśyata ,
antakasyeva bhūtāni jihīrṣoḥ kālaparyaye.
17. tasya kruddhasya rājendra vapuḥ divyam adṛśyata
antakasya iva bhūtāni jihīrṣoḥ kālaparyaye
17. he rājendra tasya kruddhasya divyam vapuḥ adṛśyata
kālaparyaye bhūtāni jihīrṣoḥ antakasya iva
17. O king of kings (rājendra), the divine form of that enraged man (Aśvatthāman) became visible, like that of Yama (antaka) desiring to seize all beings at the dissolution of the age.
अश्रुपूर्णे ततो नेत्रे अपमृज्य पुनः पुनः ।
उवाच कोपान्निःश्वस्य दुर्योधनमिदं वचः ॥१८॥
18. aśrupūrṇe tato netre apamṛjya punaḥ punaḥ ,
uvāca kopānniḥśvasya duryodhanamidaṁ vacaḥ.
18. aśrupūrṇe tataḥ netre apamṛjya punaḥ punaḥ
uvāca kopāt niḥśvasya duryodhanam idam vacaḥ
18. tataḥ aśrupūrṇe netre punaḥ punaḥ apamṛjya
kopāt niḥśvasya idam vacaḥ duryodhanam uvāca
18. Then, repeatedly wiping his tear-filled eyes, and sighing in anger, he spoke these words to Duryodhana.
पिता मम यथा क्षुद्रैर्न्यस्तशस्त्रो निपातितः ।
धर्मध्वजवता पापं कृतं तद्विदितं मम ।
अनार्यं सुनृशंसस्य धर्मपुत्रस्य मे श्रुतम् ॥१९॥
19. pitā mama yathā kṣudrairnyastaśastro nipātitaḥ ,
dharmadhvajavatā pāpaṁ kṛtaṁ tadviditaṁ mama ,
anāryaṁ sunṛśaṁsasya dharmaputrasya me śrutam.
19. pitā mama yathā kṣudraiḥ nyastaśastraḥ
nipātitaḥ dharmadhvajavatā pāpam
kṛtam tat viditam mama anāryam
sunṛśaṃsasya dharmaputrasya me śrutam
19. yathā mama pitā nyastaśastraḥ kṣudraiḥ nipātitaḥ,
dharmadhvajavatā pāpam kṛtam,
tat mama viditam anāryam sunṛśaṃsasya dharmaputrasya me śrutam
19. Just as my revered elder, having laid down his weapons, was struck down by contemptible individuals—that sin was committed by one who merely waves the banner of (dharma) righteousness, and I know this. I have heard of the ignoble acts of the extremely cruel son of (dharma) righteousness.
युद्धेष्वपि प्रवृत्तानां ध्रुवौ जयपराजयौ ।
द्वयमेतद्भवेद्राजन्वधस्तत्र प्रशस्यते ॥२०॥
20. yuddheṣvapi pravṛttānāṁ dhruvau jayaparājayau ,
dvayametadbhavedrājanvadhastatra praśasyate.
20. yuddheṣu api pravṛttānām dhruvau jayaparājayau
dvayam etat bhavet rājan vadhaḥ tatra praśasyate
20. rājan yuddheṣu api pravṛttānām jayaparājayau
dhruvau etat dvayam bhavet tatra vadhaḥ praśasyate
20. Even for those engaged in battles, victory and defeat are inevitable. This pair of outcomes exists, O King; in such circumstances, death (in battle) is praised.
न्यायवृत्तो वधो यस्तु संग्रामे युध्यतो भवेत् ।
न स दुःखाय भवति तथा दृष्टो हि स द्विजः ॥२१॥
21. nyāyavṛtto vadho yastu saṁgrāme yudhyato bhavet ,
na sa duḥkhāya bhavati tathā dṛṣṭo hi sa dvijaḥ.
21. nyāyavṛttaḥ vadhaḥ yaḥ tu saṃgrāme yudhyataḥ bhavet
na sa duḥkhāya bhavati tathā dṛṣṭaḥ hi sa dvijaḥ
21. tu yaḥ nyāyavṛttaḥ vadhaḥ saṃgrāme yudhyataḥ bhavet
sa duḥkhāya na bhavati hi sa dvijaḥ tathā dṛṣṭaḥ
21. But that death which occurs in battle for one fighting righteously (nyāyavṛtta)—that does not lead to sorrow. Indeed, so has it been seen by the twice-born (dvija).
गतः स वीरलोकाय पिता मम न संशयः ।
न शोच्यः पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तथा स निधनं गतः ॥२२॥
22. gataḥ sa vīralokāya pitā mama na saṁśayaḥ ,
na śocyaḥ puruṣavyāghrastathā sa nidhanaṁ gataḥ.
22. gataḥ saḥ vīralokāya pitā mama na saṃśayaḥ | na
śocyaḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ tathā saḥ nidhanam gataḥ
22. mama pitā saḥ vīralokāya gataḥ na saṃśayaḥ saḥ
puruṣavyāghraḥ tathā nidhanam gataḥ na śocyaḥ
22. My father has undoubtedly gone to the world of heroes. That tiger among men, having thus met his end, is not to be grieved for.
यत्तु धर्मप्रवृत्तः सन्केशग्रहणमाप्तवान् ।
पश्यतां सर्वसैन्यानां तन्मे मर्माणि कृन्तति ॥२३॥
23. yattu dharmapravṛttaḥ sankeśagrahaṇamāptavān ,
paśyatāṁ sarvasainyānāṁ tanme marmāṇi kṛntati.
23. yat tu dharmapravṛttaḥ san keśagrahaṇam āptavān
| paśyatām sarvasainyānām tat me marmāṇi kṛntati
23. tu yat dharmapravṛttaḥ san (saḥ) keśagrahaṇam āptavān,
tat me marmāṇi kṛntati sarvasainyānām paśyatām
23. But the fact that he, though engaged in his intrinsic nature (dharma), suffered being seized by the hair, while all the armies watched – that indeed pierces my vital points.
कामात्क्रोधादवज्ञानाद्दर्पाद्बाल्येन वा पुनः ।
वैधर्मिकानि कुर्वन्ति तथा परिभवेन च ॥२४॥
24. kāmātkrodhādavajñānāddarpādbālyena vā punaḥ ,
vaidharmikāni kurvanti tathā paribhavena ca.
24. kāmāt krodhāt avajñānāt darpāt bālyena vā punaḥ
| vaidharmikāni kurvanti tathā paribhavena ca
24. kāmāt,
krodhāt,
avajñānāt,
darpāt,
bālyena vā punaḥ,
tathā paribhavena ca vaidharmikāni kurvanti
24. Indeed, they commit acts contrary to natural law (dharma) out of desire, anger, disdain, arrogance, or childishness, and also due to disrespect.
तदिदं पार्षतेनेह महदाधर्मिकं कृतम् ।
अवज्ञाय च मां नूनं नृशंसेन दुरात्मना ॥२५॥
25. tadidaṁ pārṣateneha mahadādharmikaṁ kṛtam ,
avajñāya ca māṁ nūnaṁ nṛśaṁsena durātmanā.
25. tat idam pārṣatena iha mahat ādharmikam kṛtam
| avajñāya ca mām nūnam nṛśaṃsena durātmanā
25. nūnam iha tat idam mahat ādharmikam pārṣatena
nṛśaṃsena durātmanā māṃ avajñāya ca kṛtam
25. Certainly, this great unlawful (adharma) act has been done here by that cruel, evil-minded Pārṣata, disrespecting me.
तस्यानुबन्धं स द्रष्टा धृष्टद्युम्नः सुदारुणम् ।
अनार्यं परमं कृत्वा मिथ्यावादी च पाण्डवः ॥२६॥
26. tasyānubandhaṁ sa draṣṭā dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ sudāruṇam ,
anāryaṁ paramaṁ kṛtvā mithyāvādī ca pāṇḍavaḥ.
26. tasya anubandham saḥ draṣṭā dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ sudāruṇam
| anāryam paramam kṛtvā mithyāvādī ca pāṇḍavaḥ
26. saḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ draṣṭā tasya sudāruṇam anubandham
ca pāṇḍavaḥ anāryam paramam kṛtvā mithyāvādī
26. That Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the observer, witnessed its exceedingly terrible consequence. And the Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira), having committed a supremely ignoble act, became a speaker of falsehoods.
यो ह्यसौ छद्मनाचार्यं शस्त्रं संन्यासयत्तदा ।
तस्याद्य धर्मराजस्य भूमिः पास्यति शोणितम् ॥२७॥
27. yo hyasau chadmanācāryaṁ śastraṁ saṁnyāsayattadā ,
tasyādya dharmarājasya bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam.
27. yaḥ hi asau chadmanā ācāryam śastram saṃnyāsayat tadā
| tasya adya dharmarājasya bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam
27. yaḥ asau hi tadā chadmanā ācāryam śastram saṃnyāsayat
adya bhūmiḥ tasya dharmarājasya śoṇitam pāsyati
27. Indeed, he who then by deceit caused the preceptor (Droṇa) to lay down his weapon – today, the earth will drink the blood of that king of natural law (dharma) (Yudhiṣṭhira).
सर्वोपायैर्यतिष्यामि पाञ्चालानामहं वधे ।
धृष्टद्युम्नं च समरे हन्ताहं पापकारिणम् ॥२८॥
28. sarvopāyairyatiṣyāmi pāñcālānāmahaṁ vadhe ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ ca samare hantāhaṁ pāpakāriṇam.
28. sarvopāyaiḥ yatiṣyāmi pāñcālānām aham vadhe |
dhṛṣṭadyumnam ca samare hantā aham pāpakāriṇam
28. aham sarvopāyaiḥ pāñcālānām vadhe yatiṣyāmi ca
aham samare pāpakāriṇam dhṛṣṭadyumnam hantā
28. I will strive by all means for the destruction of the Pāñcālas. And I will slay Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the wrongdoer, in battle.
कर्मणा येन तेनेह मृदुना दारुणेन वा ।
पाञ्चालानां वधं कृत्वा शान्तिं लब्धास्मि कौरव ॥२९॥
29. karmaṇā yena teneha mṛdunā dāruṇena vā ,
pāñcālānāṁ vadhaṁ kṛtvā śāntiṁ labdhāsmi kaurava.

pāñcālānām vadham kṛtvā śāntim labdhā asmi kaurava

29. O Kaurava, by whatever action (karma), whether gentle or cruel, I will have obtained peace (śānti) here after having accomplished the destruction of the Pāñcālas.
यदर्थं पुरुषव्याघ्र पुत्रमिच्छन्ति मानवाः ।
प्रेत्य चेह च संप्राप्तं त्राणाय महतो भयात् ॥३०॥
30. yadarthaṁ puruṣavyāghra putramicchanti mānavāḥ ,
pretya ceha ca saṁprāptaṁ trāṇāya mahato bhayāt.
30. yat arthaṃ puruṣavyāghra putram icchanti mānavāḥ
pretya ca iha ca saṃprāptam trāṇāya mahataḥ bhayāt
30. puruṣavyāghra mānavāḥ yad arthaṃ putram icchanti,
[saḥ putraḥ] iha ca pretya ca mahataḥ bhayāt trāṇāya saṃprāptam
30. O tiger among men, humans desire a son for the purpose of being protected from great fear, both in this world and after death.
पित्रा तु मम सावस्था प्राप्ता निर्बन्धुना यथा ।
मयि शैलप्रतीकाशे पुत्रे शिष्ये च जीवति ॥३१॥
31. pitrā tu mama sāvasthā prāptā nirbandhunā yathā ,
mayi śailapratīkāśe putre śiṣye ca jīvati.

yathā mayi śailapratīkāśe putre śiṣye ca jīvati
31. tu mama pitrā sā avasthā nirbandhunā yathā prāptā,

31. But my father reached that state as if he had no kinsman, even though I, his son who is like a mountain, and also his disciple, am alive.
धिङ्ममास्त्राणि दिव्यानि धिग्बाहू धिक्पराक्रमम् ।
यन्मां द्रोणः सुतं प्राप्य केशग्रहणमाप्तवान् ॥३२॥
32. dhiṅmamāstrāṇi divyāni dhigbāhū dhikparākramam ,
yanmāṁ droṇaḥ sutaṁ prāpya keśagrahaṇamāptavān.
32. dhik mama astrāṇi divyāni dhik bāhū dhik parākramam
yat mām droṇaḥ sutam prāpya keśagrahaṇam āptavān
32. dhik mama divyāni astrāṇi,
dhik [mama] bāhū,
dhik [mama] parākramam,
yat droṇaḥ sutam prāpya mām keśagrahaṇam āptavān
32. Fie upon my divine weapons, fie upon my arms, fie upon my valor! Because Drona, having captured a son, caused the indignity of hair-grabbing to befall me.
स तथाहं करिष्यामि यथा भरतसत्तम ।
परलोकगतस्यापि गमिष्याम्यनृणः पितुः ॥३३॥
33. sa tathāhaṁ kariṣyāmi yathā bharatasattama ,
paralokagatasyāpi gamiṣyāmyanṛṇaḥ pituḥ.
33. saḥ tathā aham kariṣyāmi yathā bharatasattama
paralokagatasya api gamiṣyāmi anṛṇaḥ pituḥ
33. bharatasattama,
saḥ aham tathā kariṣyāmi yathā paralokagatasya api pituḥ anṛṇaḥ gamiṣyāmi
33. So, O best of Bharatas, I will act in such a way that I shall become free from debt to my father, even though he has gone to the other world.
आर्येण तु न वक्तव्या कदाचित्स्तुतिरात्मनः ।
पितुर्वधममृष्यंस्तु वक्ष्याम्यद्येह पौरुषम् ॥३४॥
34. āryeṇa tu na vaktavyā kadācitstutirātmanaḥ ,
piturvadhamamṛṣyaṁstu vakṣyāmyadyeha pauruṣam.
34. āryeṇa tu na vaktavyā kadācit stutiḥ ātmanaḥ
pituḥ vadham amṛṣyan tu vakṣyāmi adya iha pauruṣam

34. Indeed, a noble person should never speak praise of their own self (ātman). However, as I cannot tolerate the murder of my father, I will declare my valor here today.
अद्य पश्यन्तु मे वीर्यं पाण्डवाः सजनार्दनाः ।
मृद्नतः सर्वसैन्यानि युगान्तमिव कुर्वतः ॥३५॥
35. adya paśyantu me vīryaṁ pāṇḍavāḥ sajanārdanāḥ ,
mṛdnataḥ sarvasainyāni yugāntamiva kurvataḥ.

35. Today, let the Pandavas, along with Janardana (Krishna), witness my valor, as I crush all armies, as if bringing about the dissolution of an age (yugānta).
न हि देवा न गन्धर्वा नासुरा न च राक्षसाः ।
अद्य शक्ता रणे जेतुं रथस्थं मां नरर्षभ ॥३६॥
36. na hi devā na gandharvā nāsurā na ca rākṣasāḥ ,
adya śaktā raṇe jetuṁ rathasthaṁ māṁ nararṣabha.
36. na hi devāḥ na gandharvāḥ na asurāḥ na ca rākṣasāḥ
adya śaktāḥ raṇe jetum rathastham mām nararṣabha
36. nararṣabha hi adya na devāḥ na gandharvāḥ na asurāḥ
na ca rākṣasāḥ raṇe rathastham mām jetum śaktāḥ
36. O best of men, certainly neither gods, nor Gandharvas, nor Asuras, nor Rākṣasas are able today to conquer me, who stands on my chariot.
मदन्यो नास्ति लोकेऽस्मिन्नर्जुनाद्वास्त्रवित्तमः ।
अहं हि ज्वलतां मध्ये मयूखानामिवांशुमान् ।
प्रयोक्ता देवसृष्टानामस्त्राणां पृतनागतः ॥३७॥
37. madanyo nāsti loke'sminnarjunādvāstravittamaḥ ,
ahaṁ hi jvalatāṁ madhye mayūkhānāmivāṁśumān ,
prayoktā devasṛṣṭānāmastrāṇāṁ pṛtanāgataḥ.
37. mat anyaḥ na asti loke asmin arjunāt
vā astravittamaḥ aham hi jvalatām
madhye mayūkhānām iva aṃśumān prayoktā
devasṛṣṭānām astrāṇām pṛtanāgataḥ
37. loke asmin mat anyaḥ vā arjunāt
astravittamaḥ na asti hi aham pṛtanāgataḥ
devasṛṣṭānām astrāṇām prayoktā
jvalatām mayūkhānām madhye iva aṃśumān
37. In this world, there is no one else more skilled in weapons than me, or than Arjuna. Indeed, I, having come to battle, am a wielder of divine weapons (astra) created by the gods, shining among the radiant ones like the sun (aṃśumān) among its rays (mayūkha).
कृशाश्वतनया ह्यद्य मत्प्रयुक्ता महामृधे ।
दर्शयन्तोऽऽत्मनो वीर्यं प्रमथिष्यन्ति पाण्डवान् ॥३८॥
38. kṛśāśvatanayā hyadya matprayuktā mahāmṛdhe ,
darśayanto''tmano vīryaṁ pramathiṣyanti pāṇḍavān.
38. kṛśāśvatanayāḥ hi adya matprayuktāḥ mahāmṛdhe
darśayantaḥ ātmanaḥ vīryam pramathiṣyanti pāṇḍavān
38. hi adya matprayuktāḥ kṛśāśvatanayāḥ mahāmṛdhe
ātmanaḥ vīryam darśayantaḥ pāṇḍavān pramathiṣyanti
38. Indeed, today, Kṛśāśva's sons, impelled by me in the great battle, displaying their own valor (ātman), will crush the Pāṇḍavas.
अद्य सर्वा दिशो राजन्धाराभिरिव संकुलाः ।
आवृताः पत्रिभिस्तीक्ष्णैर्द्रष्टारो मामकैरिह ॥३९॥
39. adya sarvā diśo rājandhārābhiriva saṁkulāḥ ,
āvṛtāḥ patribhistīkṣṇairdraṣṭāro māmakairiha.
39. adya sarvāḥ diśaḥ rājan dhārābhiḥ iva saṃkulāḥ
āvṛtāḥ patribhiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ draṣṭāraḥ māmakaiḥ iha
39. rājan adya sarvāḥ diśaḥ dhārābhiḥ iva saṃkulāḥ ca
iha māmakaiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ patribhiḥ āvṛtāḥ draṣṭāraḥ
39. O King, today, all directions will be crowded as if by torrents and covered here by my keen arrows, for all observers to witness.
किरन्हि शरजालानि सर्वतो भैरवस्वरम् ।
शत्रून्निपातयिष्यामि महावात इव द्रुमान् ॥४०॥
40. kiranhi śarajālāni sarvato bhairavasvaram ,
śatrūnnipātayiṣyāmi mahāvāta iva drumān.
40. kiran hi śarajālāni sarvataḥ bhairavasvaram
śatrūn nipātayiṣyāmi mahāvātaḥ iva drumān
40. hi sarvataḥ bhairavasvaram śarajālāni kiran,
mahāvātaḥ drumān iva,
(aham) śatrūn nipātayiṣyāmi
40. Indeed, scattering showers of arrows everywhere with a terrible sound, I will fell the enemies, just as a great wind fells trees.
न च जानाति बीभत्सुस्तदस्त्रं न जनार्दनः ।
न भीमसेनो न यमौ न च राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥४१॥
41. na ca jānāti bībhatsustadastraṁ na janārdanaḥ ,
na bhīmaseno na yamau na ca rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
41. na ca jānāti bībhatsuḥ tat astram na janārdanaḥ
na bhīmasenaḥ na yamau na ca rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
41. ca na bībhatsuḥ tat astram jānāti,
na janārdanaḥ,
na bhīmasenaḥ,
na yamau,
ca na rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
41. Neither Arjuna (Bībhatsu) knows that weapon, nor Janārdana, nor Bhīmasena, nor the twins, nor King Yudhiṣṭhira.
न पार्षतो दुरात्मासौ न शिखण्डी न सात्यकिः ।
यदिदं मयि कौरव्य सकल्यं सनिवर्तनम् ॥४२॥
42. na pārṣato durātmāsau na śikhaṇḍī na sātyakiḥ ,
yadidaṁ mayi kauravya sakalyaṁ sanivartanam.
42. na pārṣataḥ durātmā asau na śikhaṇḍī na sātyakiḥ
yat idam mayi kauravya sakalyam sanivartanam
42. asau durātmā pārṣataḥ na,
śikhaṇḍī na,
sātyakiḥ na.
he kauravya,
yat idam sakalyam sanivartanam (asti),
tat mayi.
42. Neither that evil-minded Pārṣata, nor Śikhaṇḍin, nor Sātyaki (can overcome me). O Kauravya, whatever this entire situation entails, complete with its ultimate outcome, rests in my hands.
नारायणाय मे पित्रा प्रणम्य विधिपूर्वकम् ।
उपहारः पुरा दत्तो ब्रह्मरूप उपस्थिते ॥४३॥
43. nārāyaṇāya me pitrā praṇamya vidhipūrvakam ,
upahāraḥ purā datto brahmarūpa upasthite.

43. My father, having reverently bowed according to the proper rites, formerly gave an offering to Nārāyaṇa when He was present in the form of (brahman).
तं स्वयं प्रतिगृह्याथ भगवान्स वरं ददौ ।
वव्रे पिता मे परममस्त्रं नारायणं ततः ॥४४॥
44. taṁ svayaṁ pratigṛhyātha bhagavānsa varaṁ dadau ,
vavre pitā me paramamastraṁ nārāyaṇaṁ tataḥ.
44. tam svayam pratigṛhya atha bhagavān saḥ varam
dadau vavre pitā me paramam astram nārāyaṇam tataḥ
44. atha saḥ bhagavān svayam tam pratigṛhya varam dadau.
tataḥ me pitā paramam nārāyaṇam astram vavre.
44. Then the divine Lord (bhagavān) Himself, having accepted that (offering), granted a boon. Thereupon, my father requested the supreme Nārāyaṇa-weapon.
अथैनमब्रवीद्राजन्भगवान्देवसत्तमः ।
भविता त्वत्समो नान्यः कश्चिद्युधि नरः क्वचित् ॥४५॥
45. athainamabravīdrājanbhagavāndevasattamaḥ ,
bhavitā tvatsamo nānyaḥ kaścidyudhi naraḥ kvacit.
45. atha enam abravīt rājan bhagavān devasattamaḥ
bhavitā tvatsamaḥ na anyaḥ kaścit yudhi naraḥ kvacit
45. atha bhagavān devasattamaḥ (tam) enam abravīt: rājan,
yudhi kvacit tvatsamaḥ anyaḥ kaścit naraḥ na bhavitā.
45. Then the divine Lord (bhagavān), the most excellent among the gods, addressed him, saying, 'O King, no other man will ever be your equal in battle, anywhere.'
न त्विदं सहसा ब्रह्मन्प्रयोक्तव्यं कथंचन ।
न ह्येतदस्त्रमन्यत्र वधाच्छत्रोर्निवर्तते ॥४६॥
46. na tvidaṁ sahasā brahmanprayoktavyaṁ kathaṁcana ,
na hyetadastramanyatra vadhācchatrornivartate.
46. na tu idam sahasā brahman prayoktavyam kathaṃcana
na hi etat astram anyatra vadhāt śatroḥ nivartate
46. brahman tu idam astram sahasā kathaṃcana na prayoktavyam
hi etat astram śatroḥ vadhāt anyatra na nivartate
46. Indeed, O Brahmin, this (weapon) should certainly never be employed rashly by any means. For this missile does not cease its action except by the slaying of an enemy.
न चैतच्छक्यते ज्ञातुं को न वध्येदिति प्रभो ।
अवध्यमपि हन्याद्धि तस्मान्नैतत्प्रयोजयेत् ॥४७॥
47. na caitacchakyate jñātuṁ ko na vadhyediti prabho ,
avadhyamapi hanyāddhi tasmānnaitatprayojayet.
47. na ca etat śakyate jñātum kaḥ na vadhyet iti prabho
avadhyam api hanyāt hi tasmāt na etat prayojayet
47. prabho ca etat kaḥ na vadhyet iti jñātum na śakyate
hi avadhyam api hanyāt tasmāt etat na prayojayet
47. And, O Lord, it is not possible to know 'who would not be killed' (by this weapon). For it would indeed kill even those who should not be killed. Therefore, one should not employ this (weapon).
वधः संख्ये द्रवश्चैव शस्त्राणां च विसर्जनम् ।
प्रयाचनं च शत्रूणां गमनं शरणस्य च ॥४८॥
48. vadhaḥ saṁkhye dravaścaiva śastrāṇāṁ ca visarjanam ,
prayācanaṁ ca śatrūṇāṁ gamanaṁ śaraṇasya ca.
48. vadhaḥ saṃkhye dravaḥ ca eva śastrāṇām ca visarjanam
prayācanam ca śatrūṇām gamanam śaraṇasya ca
48. saṃkhye vadhaḥ ca eva dravaḥ ca śastrāṇām visarjanam
ca śatrūṇām prayācanam ca śaraṇasya gamanam ca
48. The slaying (of enemies) in battle, their flight (from battle), the discharging of weapons, the supplication of enemies, and their seeking of refuge (from battle).
एते प्रशमने योगा महास्त्रस्य परंतप ।
सर्वथा पीडितो हि स्यादवध्यान्पीडयन्रणे ॥४९॥
49. ete praśamane yogā mahāstrasya paraṁtapa ,
sarvathā pīḍito hi syādavadhyānpīḍayanraṇe.
49. ete praśamane yogāḥ mahāstrasya paraṃtapa
sarvathā pīḍitaḥ hi syāt avadhyān pīḍayan raṇe
49. paraṃtapa ete mahāstrasya praśamane yogāḥ hi
raṇe avadhyān pīḍayan sarvathā pīḍitaḥ syāt
49. O scorcher of foes (paraṃtapa), these are the methods (yoga) for the cessation of the great weapon (mahāstra). For one who torments the inviolable (persons) in battle would indeed be utterly tormented himself.
तज्जग्राह पिता मह्यमब्रवीच्चैव स प्रभुः ।
त्वं वर्षिष्यसि दिव्यानि शस्त्रवर्षाण्यनेकशः ।
अनेनास्त्रेण संग्रामे तेजसा च ज्वलिष्यसि ॥५०॥
50. tajjagrāha pitā mahyamabravīccaiva sa prabhuḥ ,
tvaṁ varṣiṣyasi divyāni śastravarṣāṇyanekaśaḥ ,
anenāstreṇa saṁgrāme tejasā ca jvaliṣyasi.
50. tat jagrāha pitā mahyam abravīt ca
eva saḥ prabhuḥ tvam varṣiṣyasi
divyāni śastravarṣāṇi anekśaḥ anena
astreṇa saṃgrāme tejasā ca jvaliṣyasi
50. mama pitā tat jagrāha saḥ prabhuḥ ca
eva mahyam abravīt tvam divyāni
anekśaḥ śastravarṣāṇi varṣiṣyasi anena
astreṇa ca tejasā saṃgrāme jvaliṣyasi
50. My father accepted that, and that lord said to me, "You will unleash many divine showers of weapons. With this missile (astra) in battle, and by your brilliance, you will blaze forth."
एवमुक्त्वा स भगवान्दिवमाचक्रमे प्रभुः ।
एतन्नारायणादस्त्रं तत्प्राप्तं मम बन्धुना ॥५१॥
51. evamuktvā sa bhagavāndivamācakrame prabhuḥ ,
etannārāyaṇādastraṁ tatprāptaṁ mama bandhunā.
51. evam uktvā saḥ bhagavān divam ācakrame prabhuḥ
etat nārāyaṇāt astram tat prāptam mama bandhunā
51. evam uktvā saḥ bhagavān prabhuḥ divam ācakrame
etat astram nārāyaṇāt mama bandhunā tat prāptam
51. Having spoken thus, that divine lord ascended to heaven. This missile (astra) from Narayana was obtained by my kinsman.
तेनाहं पाण्डवांश्चैव पाञ्चालान्मत्स्यकेकयान् ।
विद्रावयिष्यामि रणे शचीपतिरिवासुरान् ॥५२॥
52. tenāhaṁ pāṇḍavāṁścaiva pāñcālānmatsyakekayān ,
vidrāvayiṣyāmi raṇe śacīpatirivāsurān.
52. tena aham pāṇḍavān ca eva pāñcālān matsyakekayān
vidrāvayiṣyāmi raṇe śacīpatiḥ iva asurān
52. tena aham raṇe pāṇḍavān ca eva pāñcālān
matsyakekayān vidrāvayiṣyāmi śacīpatiḥ asurān iva
52. With that (weapon), I will rout the Pāṇḍavas, and the Pāñcālas, Matsyas, and Kekayas in battle, just as the lord of Śacī scatters the Asuras.
यथा यथाहमिच्छेयं तथा भूत्वा शरा मम ।
निपतेयुः सपत्नेषु विक्रमत्स्वपि भारत ॥५३॥
53. yathā yathāhamiccheyaṁ tathā bhūtvā śarā mama ,
nipateyuḥ sapatneṣu vikramatsvapi bhārata.
53. yathā yathā aham iccheyam tathā bhūtvā śarāḥ
mama nipateyuḥ sapatneṣu vikramatsu api bhārata
53. bhārata yathā yathā aham iccheyam tathā bhūtvā
mama śarāḥ vikramatsu api sapatneṣu nipateyuḥ
53. O Bhārata, as I desire, so let my arrows become and fall upon my adversaries, even while they are showing valor.
यथेष्टमश्मवर्षेण प्रवर्षिष्ये रणे स्थितः ।
अयोमुखैश्च विहगैर्द्रावयिष्ये महारथान् ।
परश्वधांश्च विविधान्प्रसक्ष्येऽहमसंशयम् ॥५४॥
54. yatheṣṭamaśmavarṣeṇa pravarṣiṣye raṇe sthitaḥ ,
ayomukhaiśca vihagairdrāvayiṣye mahārathān ,
paraśvadhāṁśca vividhānprasakṣye'hamasaṁśayam.
54. yatheṣṭam aśmavarṣeṇa pravarṣiṣye raṇe
sthitaḥ | ayomukhaiḥ ca vihagaiḥ
drāvayiṣye mahārathān | paraśvadhān
ca vividhān prasakṣye aham asaṃśayam
54. ahaṃ raṇe sthitaḥ yatheṣṭam aśmavarṣeṇa
pravarṣiṣye ca ayomukhaiḥ vihagaiḥ
mahārathān drāvayiṣye ca vividhān
paraśvadhān aham asaṃśayam prasakṣye
54. Standing in battle, I shall unleash a shower of stones as I wish. With iron-tipped flying weapons, I shall make the great charioteers flee. And without a doubt, I shall hurl various axes.
सोऽहं नारायणास्त्रेण महता शत्रुतापन ।
शत्रून्विध्वंसयिष्यामि कदर्थीकृत्य पाण्डवान् ॥५५॥
55. so'haṁ nārāyaṇāstreṇa mahatā śatrutāpana ,
śatrūnvidhvaṁsayiṣyāmi kadarthīkṛtya pāṇḍavān.
55. saḥ aham nārāyaṇāstreṇa mahatā śatrutāpana |
śatrūn vidhvaṃsayiṣyāmi kadarthīkṛtya pāṇḍavān
55. śatrutāpana saḥ aham mahatā nārāyaṇāstreṇa
pāṇḍavān kadarthīkṛtya śatrūn vidhvaṃsayiṣyāmi
55. O tormentor of enemies, I, that very person, shall completely destroy the enemies with the great Nārāyaṇa weapon, after having humiliated the Pāṇḍavas.
मित्रब्रह्मगुरुद्वेषी जाल्मकः सुविगर्हितः ।
पाञ्चालापसदश्चाद्य न मे जीवन्विमोक्ष्यते ॥५६॥
56. mitrabrahmagurudveṣī jālmakaḥ suvigarhitaḥ ,
pāñcālāpasadaścādya na me jīvanvimokṣyate.
56. mitrabrahmagurudveṣī jālmakaḥ suvigarhitaḥ |
pāñcālāpasadaḥ ca adya na me jīvan vimokṣyate

56. That despicable, greatly censured wretch, who hates friends, Brahmins, and preceptors (guru), and is the scum of the Pañcālas—he will not escape from me alive today.
तच्छ्रुत्वा द्रोणपुत्रस्य पर्यवर्तत वाहिनी ।
ततः सर्वे महाशङ्खान्दध्मुः पुरुषसत्तमाः ॥५७॥
57. tacchrutvā droṇaputrasya paryavartata vāhinī ,
tataḥ sarve mahāśaṅkhāndadhmuḥ puruṣasattamāḥ.
57. tat śrutvā droṇaputrasya paryavartata vāhinī |
tataḥ sarve mahāśaṅkhān dadhmuḥ puruṣasattamāḥ
57. droṇaputrasya tat śrutvā vāhinī paryavartata
tataḥ sarve puruṣasattamāḥ mahāśaṅkhān dadhmuḥ
57. Having heard that (speech) of Droṇa's son, the army rallied. Thereupon, all the best among men blew their great conches.
भेरीश्चाभ्यहनन्हृष्टा डिण्डिमांश्च सहस्रशः ।
तथा ननाद वसुधा खुरनेमिप्रपीडिता ।
स शब्दस्तुमुलः खं द्यां पृथिवीं च व्यनादयत् ॥५८॥
58. bherīścābhyahananhṛṣṭā ḍiṇḍimāṁśca sahasraśaḥ ,
tathā nanāda vasudhā khuranemiprapīḍitā ,
sa śabdastumulaḥ khaṁ dyāṁ pṛthivīṁ ca vyanādayat.
58. bherīḥ ca abhyahanan hṛṣṭāḥ ḍiṇḍimān
ca sahasraśaḥ tathā nanāda vasudhā
khuranemiprapīḍitā saḥ śabdaḥ
tumulaḥ kham dyām pṛthivīm ca vyanādayat
58. hṛṣṭāḥ bherīḥ ca ḍiṇḍimān ca sahasraśaḥ
abhyahanan tathā khuranemiprapīḍitā
vasudhā nanāda saḥ tumulaḥ
śabdaḥ kham dyām ca pṛthivīm vyanādayat
58. Joyfully, they struck thousands of drums and kettledrums. Thus, the earth, pressed by hooves and wheel-rims, roared. That tumultuous sound made the sky, heaven, and earth resound.
तं शब्दं पाण्डवाः श्रुत्वा पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम् ।
समेत्य रथिनां श्रेष्ठाः सहिताः संन्यमन्त्रयन् ॥५९॥
59. taṁ śabdaṁ pāṇḍavāḥ śrutvā parjanyaninadopamam ,
sametya rathināṁ śreṣṭhāḥ sahitāḥ saṁnyamantrayan.

sametya rathinām śreṣṭhāḥ sahitāḥ saṃnyamantrayan
59. parjanyanindopamam tam śabdam śrutvā,
rathinām śreṣṭhāḥ sahitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sametya saṃnyamantrayan
59. Having heard that sound, which was like the roar of a thundercloud, the Pāṇḍavas, the foremost among charioteers, assembled together and consulted.
तथोक्त्वा द्रोणपुत्रोऽपि तदोपस्पृश्य भारत ।
प्रादुश्चकार तद्दिव्यमस्त्रं नारायणं तदा ॥६०॥
60. tathoktvā droṇaputro'pi tadopaspṛśya bhārata ,
prāduścakāra taddivyamastraṁ nārāyaṇaṁ tadā.
60. tathā uktvā droṇaputraḥ api tadā upaspṛśya bhārata
prāduḥ cakāra tat divyam astram nārāyaṇam tadā
60. bhārata,
tathā uktvā,
droṇaputraḥ api tadā upaspṛśya,
tadā tat divyam nārāyaṇam astram prāduḥ cakāra
60. O Bhārata, having spoken thus, Drona's son (Aśvatthāman) then also touched water (for ritual purification), and immediately manifested that divine Nārāyaṇa weapon (astra).
