जनमेजय उवाच ।
गते भगवति व्यासे धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ।
किमचेष्टत विप्रर्षे तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
gate bhagavati vyāse dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ ,
kimaceṣṭata viprarṣe tanme vyākhyātumarhasi.

1. Janamejaya said: 'O Brahmin sage (viprarṣi), when the venerable Vyasa had departed, what did King Dhritarashtra do? Please explain that to me.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा नरश्रेष्ठ चिरं ध्यात्वा त्वचेतनः ।
संजयं योजयेत्युक्त्वा विदुरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etacchrutvā naraśreṣṭha ciraṁ dhyātvā tvacetanaḥ ,
saṁjayaṁ yojayetyuktvā viduraṁ pratyabhāṣata.
2. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca etat śrutvā naraśreṣṭha ciram dhyātvā tu
acetanaḥ saṃjayam yojaya iti uktvā viduram pratyabhāṣata
2. वैशंपायन उवाच नरश्रेष्ठ एतत् श्रुत्वा चिरम् ध्यात्वा तु अचेतनः [धृतराष्ट्रः] "संजयम् योजय!" इति उक्त्वा विदुरम् प्रत्यभाषत ।
2. Vaisampayana said: 'O best of men (naraśreṣṭha), having heard this and pondered for a long time, he (Dhritarashtra) became stunned. Then, saying "Summon Sanjaya!", he spoke to Vidura.'
क्षिप्रमानय गान्धारीं सर्वाश्च भरतस्त्रियः ।
वधूं कुन्तीमुपादाय याश्चान्यास्तत्र योषितः ॥३॥
3. kṣipramānaya gāndhārīṁ sarvāśca bharatastriyaḥ ,
vadhūṁ kuntīmupādāya yāścānyāstatra yoṣitaḥ.
3. kṣipram ānaya gāndhārīm sarvāḥ ca bharatastriyaḥ
vadhūm kuntīm upādāya yāḥ ca anyāḥ tatra yoṣitaḥ
3. [त्वम्] क्षिप्रम् गान्धारीम् सर्वाः च भरतस्त्रियः वधुम् कुन्तीम् उपादाय याः च अन्याः योषितः तत्र [सन्ति ताः] आनय ।
3. Quickly bring Gandhari, and all the women of the Bharata lineage (bharatastriyaḥ), along with my daughter-in-law Kunti, and any other women who are present there.
एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा विदुरं धर्मवित्तमम् ।
शोकविप्रहतज्ञानो यानमेवान्वपद्यत ॥४॥
4. evamuktvā sa dharmātmā viduraṁ dharmavittamam ,
śokaviprahatajñāno yānamevānvapadyata.
4. evam uktvā saḥ dharmātmā viduram dharmavittamam
śokaviprahatajñānaḥ yānam eva anvapadyata
4. saḥ dharmātmā śokaviprahatajñānaḥ evam
dharmavittamam viduram uktvā eva yānam anvapadyata
4. Having spoken thus to Vidura, the most excellent knower of natural law (dharma), he, the righteous-souled (dharmātmā) one, whose understanding had been overcome by grief, then boarded the chariot.
गान्धारी चैव शोकार्ता भर्तुर्वचनचोदिता ।
सह कुन्त्या यतो राजा सह स्त्रीभिरुपाद्रवत् ॥५॥
5. gāndhārī caiva śokārtā bharturvacanacoditā ,
saha kuntyā yato rājā saha strībhirupādravat.
5. gāndhārī ca eva śokārtā bhartuḥ vacanacoditā
saha kuntyā yataḥ rājā saha strībhiḥ upādravat
5. gāndhārī ca eva śokārtā bhartuḥ vacanacoditā

5. And Gandhari, afflicted by grief and prompted by her husband's command, accompanied Kunti and the other women, and hurried to where the king was.
ताः समासाद्य राजानं भृशं शोकसमन्विताः ।
आमन्त्र्यान्योन्यमीयुः स्म भृशमुच्चुक्रुशुस्ततः ॥६॥
6. tāḥ samāsādya rājānaṁ bhṛśaṁ śokasamanvitāḥ ,
āmantryānyonyamīyuḥ sma bhṛśamuccukruśustataḥ.
6. tāḥ samāsādya rājānam bhṛśam śokasamannvitāḥ
āmantrya anyonyam īyuḥ sma bhṛśam uccukruśuḥ tataḥ
6. tāḥ śokasamannvitāḥ rājānam samāsādya
anyonyam āmantrya tataḥ bhṛśam uccukruśuḥ sma
6. Having reached the king, they were intensely overcome by grief. After addressing one another, they then wailed loudly.
ताः समाश्वासयत्क्षत्ता ताभ्यश्चार्ततरः स्वयम् ।
अश्रुकण्ठीः समारोप्य ततोऽसौ निर्ययौ पुरात् ॥७॥
7. tāḥ samāśvāsayatkṣattā tābhyaścārtataraḥ svayam ,
aśrukaṇṭhīḥ samāropya tato'sau niryayau purāt.
7. tāḥ samāśvāsayat kṣattā tābhyaḥ ca ārtataraḥ svayam
aśrukaṇṭhīḥ samāropya tataḥ asau niryayau purāt
7. kṣattā tāḥ samāśvāsayat ca svayam tābhyaḥ ārtataraḥ
aśrukaṇṭhīḥ samāropya tataḥ asau purāt niryayau
7. The charioteer (Vidura) consoled them, though he himself was more distressed than they were. After helping those with tearful voices to board (the vehicle), he then departed from the city.
ततः प्रणादः संजज्ञे सर्वेषु कुरुवेश्मसु ।
आकुमारं पुरं सर्वमभवच्छोककर्शितम् ॥८॥
8. tataḥ praṇādaḥ saṁjajñe sarveṣu kuruveśmasu ,
ākumāraṁ puraṁ sarvamabhavacchokakarśitam.
8. tataḥ praṇādaḥ saṃjajñe sarveṣu kuru-veśmasu
ā-kumāram puram sarvam abhavat śoka-karśitam
8. tataḥ sarveṣu kuru-veśmasu praṇādaḥ saṃjajñe.
sarvam ā-kumāram puram śoka-karśitam abhavat.
8. Then, a great wailing arose in all the Kuru palaces. The entire city, including its children, became emaciated and distressed by grief.
अदृष्टपूर्वा या नार्यः पुरा देवगणैरपि ।
पृथग्जनेन दृश्यन्त तास्तदा निहतेश्वराः ॥९॥
9. adṛṣṭapūrvā yā nāryaḥ purā devagaṇairapi ,
pṛthagjanena dṛśyanta tāstadā nihateśvarāḥ.
9. adṛṣṭapūrvā yā nāryaḥ purā deva-gaṇaiḥ api
pṛthagjanena dṛśyanta tāḥ tadā nihateśvarāḥ
9. purā yā adṛṣṭapūrvā nāryaḥ deva-gaṇaiḥ api,
tāḥ tadā nihateśvarāḥ pṛthagjanena dṛśyanta.
9. Those women, who previously had not been seen even by groups of gods, were then seen by common people, their husbands having been slain.
प्रकीर्य केशान्सुशुभान्भूषणान्यवमुच्य च ।
एकवस्त्रधरा नार्यः परिपेतुरनाथवत् ॥१०॥
10. prakīrya keśānsuśubhānbhūṣaṇānyavamucya ca ,
ekavastradharā nāryaḥ paripeturanāthavat.
10. prakīrya keśān su-śubhān bhūṣaṇāni avamucya ca
eka-vastra-dharā nāryaḥ paripetuḥ anāthavat
10. nāryaḥ su-śubhān keśān prakīrya ca bhūṣaṇāni avamucya eka-vastra-dharā anāthavat paripetuḥ.
10. Scattering their very beautiful hair and casting off their ornaments, the women, wearing only a single garment, ran about like those without a protector or husband.
श्वेतपर्वतरूपेभ्यो गृहेभ्यस्तास्त्वपाक्रमन् ।
गुहाभ्य इव शैलानां पृषत्यो हतयूथपाः ॥११॥
11. śvetaparvatarūpebhyo gṛhebhyastāstvapākraman ,
guhābhya iva śailānāṁ pṛṣatyo hatayūthapāḥ.
11. śveta-parvata-rūpebhyas gṛhebhyas tāḥ tu apākraman
guhābhyaḥ iva śailānām pṛṣatyaḥ hata-yūthapāḥ
11. tāḥ tu hata-yūthapāḥ pṛṣatyaḥ śailānām guhābhyaḥ iva śveta-parvata-rūpebhyas gṛhebhyas apākraman.
11. They, whose herd leaders (husbands) had been slain, fled from their houses, which resembled white mountains, just as female deer (does) flee from the caves of mountains when their herd leaders are killed.
तान्युदीर्णानि नारीणां तदा वृन्दान्यनेकशः ।
शोकार्तान्यद्रवन्राजन्किशोरीणामिवाङ्गने ॥१२॥
12. tānyudīrṇāni nārīṇāṁ tadā vṛndānyanekaśaḥ ,
śokārtānyadravanrājankiśorīṇāmivāṅgane.
12. tāni udīrṇāni nārīṇām tadā vṛndāni anekaśaḥ
śokārtāni adravan rājan kiśorīṇām iva aṅgane
12. rājan tadā nārīṇām tāni anekaśaḥ udīrṇāni
śokārtāni vṛndāni aṅgane kiśorīṇām iva adravan
12. O King, at that time, those numerous groups of women, agitated and overcome with grief, ran about like young girls in a courtyard.
प्रगृह्य बाहून्क्रोशन्त्यः पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्पितॄनपि ।
दर्शयन्तीव ता ह स्म युगान्ते लोकसंक्षयम् ॥१३॥
13. pragṛhya bāhūnkrośantyaḥ putrānbhrātṝnpitṝnapi ,
darśayantīva tā ha sma yugānte lokasaṁkṣayam.
13. pragṛhya bāhūn krośantyaḥ putrān bhrātṝn pitṝn
api darśayantī iva tā ha sma yugānte lokasaṃkṣayam
13. tāḥ krośantyaḥ bāhūn pragṛhya putrān bhrātṝn api
pitṝn darśayantī iva yugānte lokasaṃkṣayam ha sma
13. Crying out, clutching their arms, and calling out to their sons, brothers, and fathers, those women, indeed, seemed to display the world's destruction at the end of an age (yugānta).
विलपन्त्यो रुदन्त्यश्च धावमानास्ततस्ततः ।
शोकेनाभ्याहतज्ञानाः कर्तव्यं न प्रजज्ञिरे ॥१४॥
14. vilapantyo rudantyaśca dhāvamānāstatastataḥ ,
śokenābhyāhatajñānāḥ kartavyaṁ na prajajñire.
14. vilapantyaḥ rudantyaḥ ca dhāvamānāḥ tataḥ tataḥ
śokena abhyāhatajñānāḥ kartavyam na prajajñire
14. vilapantyaḥ ca rudantyaḥ tataḥ tataḥ dhāvamānāḥ
śokena abhyāhatajñānāḥ kartavyam na prajajñire
14. Wailing, crying, and running hither and thither, their minds bewildered by grief, they did not know what their duty (kartavya) was.
व्रीडां जग्मुः पुरा याः स्म सखीनामपि योषितः ।
ता एकवस्त्रा निर्लज्जाः श्वश्रूणां पुरतोऽभवन् ॥१५॥
15. vrīḍāṁ jagmuḥ purā yāḥ sma sakhīnāmapi yoṣitaḥ ,
tā ekavastrā nirlajjāḥ śvaśrūṇāṁ purato'bhavan.
15. vrīḍām jagmuḥ purā yāḥ sma sakhīnām api yoṣitaḥ
tā ekavastrāḥ nirlajjāḥ śvaśrūṇām purataḥ abhavan
15. purā yāḥ yoṣitaḥ sakhīnām api vrīḍām jagmuḥ sma,
tāḥ ekavastrāḥ nirlajjāḥ śvaśrūṇām purataḥ abhavan
15. Those very women who, in the past, used to feel shame even before their female friends, now stood shameless and clad in a single garment in front of their mothers-in-law.
परस्परं सुसूक्ष्मेषु शोकेष्वाश्वासयन्स्म याः ।
ताः शोकविह्वला राजन्नुपैक्षन्त परस्परम् ॥१६॥
16. parasparaṁ susūkṣmeṣu śokeṣvāśvāsayansma yāḥ ,
tāḥ śokavihvalā rājannupaikṣanta parasparam.
16. parasparam susūkṣmeṣu śokeṣu āśvāsayan sma yāḥ
tāḥ śokavihvalāḥ rājan upaikṣanta parasparam
16. rājan yāḥ parasparam susūkṣmeṣu śokeṣu āśvāsayan
sma tāḥ śokavihvalāḥ parasparam upaikṣanta
16. O King, those women who used to comfort each other even in very subtle sorrows—they, overwhelmed by grief, neglected each other.
ताभिः परिवृतो राजा रुदतीभिः सहस्रशः ।
निर्ययौ नगराद्दीनस्तूर्णमायोधनं प्रति ॥१७॥
17. tābhiḥ parivṛto rājā rudatībhiḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
niryayau nagarāddīnastūrṇamāyodhanaṁ prati.
17. tābhiḥ parivṛtaḥ rājā rudatībhiḥ sahasraśaḥ
niryayau nagarāt dīnaḥ tūrṇam āyodhanam prati
17. dīnaḥ rājā tābhiḥ rudatībhiḥ sahasraśaḥ
parivṛtaḥ nagarāt tūrṇam āyodhanam prati niryayau
17. The sorrowful king, surrounded by thousands of those weeping women, quickly departed from the city towards the battlefield.
शिल्पिनो वणिजो वैश्याः सर्वकर्मोपजीविनः ।
ते पार्थिवं पुरस्कृत्य निर्ययुर्नगराद्बहिः ॥१८॥
18. śilpino vaṇijo vaiśyāḥ sarvakarmopajīvinaḥ ,
te pārthivaṁ puraskṛtya niryayurnagarādbahiḥ.
18. śilpinaḥ vaṇijaḥ vaiśyāḥ sarvakarmopajīvinaḥ
te pārthivam puraskṛtya niryayuḥ nagarāt bahiḥ
18. śilpinaḥ vaṇijaḥ vaiśyāḥ sarvakarmopajīvinaḥ
te pārthivam puraskṛtya nagarāt bahiḥ niryayuḥ
18. Artisans, merchants, Vaishyas, and those who subsist by all kinds of professions, they, making the king foremost, departed outside the city.
तासां विक्रोशमानानामार्तानां कुरुसंक्षये ।
प्रादुरासीन्महाञ्शब्दो व्यथयन्भुवनान्युत ॥१९॥
19. tāsāṁ vikrośamānānāmārtānāṁ kurusaṁkṣaye ,
prādurāsīnmahāñśabdo vyathayanbhuvanānyuta.
19. tāsām vikrośamānānām ārtānām kurusaṃkṣaye
prādurāsīt mahān śabdaḥ vyathayan bhuvanāni uta
19. kurusaṃkṣaye tāsām vikrośamānānām ārtānām
mahān śabdaḥ prādurāsīt bhuvanāni uta vyathayan
19. At the great destruction of the Kurus, a mighty sound arose from those distressed and crying women, indeed distressing the very worlds.
युगान्तकाले संप्राप्ते भूतानां दह्यतामिव ।
अभावः स्यादयं प्राप्त इति भूतानि मेनिरे ॥२०॥
20. yugāntakāle saṁprāpte bhūtānāṁ dahyatāmiva ,
abhāvaḥ syādayaṁ prāpta iti bhūtāni menire.
20. yugāntakāle saṃprāpte bhūtānām dahyatām iva
abhāvaḥ syāt ayam prāpta iti bhūtāni menire
20. bhūtāni menire iti ayam abhāvaḥ prāptaḥ syāt
yugāntakāle saṃprāpte bhūtānām dahyatām iva
20. When the time of the dissolution of the age (yuga) had arrived, and it seemed as though all beings were being consumed, the creatures believed, 'This destruction has surely come upon us.'
भृशमुद्विग्नमनसस्ते पौराः कुरुसंक्षये ।
प्राक्रोशन्त महाराज स्वनुरक्तास्तदा भृशम् ॥२१॥
21. bhṛśamudvignamanasaste paurāḥ kurusaṁkṣaye ,
prākrośanta mahārāja svanuraktāstadā bhṛśam.
21. bhṛśam udvignamanasaḥ te paurāḥ kurusaṃkṣaye
prākrośanta mahārāja svanuraktāḥ tadā bhṛśam
21. mahārāja tadā te paurāḥ kurusaṃkṣaye bhṛśam
udvignamanasaḥ svanuraktāḥ bhṛśam prākrośanta
21. O great king, those citizens, whose minds were exceedingly agitated by the destruction of the Kurus, and who were deeply loyal, then cried out loudly.
