वैशंपायन उवाच ।
युधिष्ठिरो धर्मराजः पप्रच्छ भरतर्षभ ।
मार्कण्डेयं तपोवृद्धं दीर्घायुषमकल्मषम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhiro dharmarājaḥ papraccha bharatarṣabha ,
mārkaṇḍeyaṁ tapovṛddhaṁ dīrghāyuṣamakalmaṣam.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharma-rāja) and foremost among the Bhāratas, asked Mārkaṇḍeya, who was venerable due to his asceticism (tapas), long-lived, and sinless.
विदितास्तव धर्मज्ञ देवदानवराक्षसाः ।
राजवंशाश्च विविधा ऋषिवंशाश्च शाश्वताः ।
न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किंचिदस्मिँल्लोके द्विजोत्तम ॥२॥
2. viditāstava dharmajña devadānavarākṣasāḥ ,
rājavaṁśāśca vividhā ṛṣivaṁśāśca śāśvatāḥ ,
na te'styaviditaṁ kiṁcidasmiँlloke dvijottama.
2. viditāḥ tava dharmajña devadānavarākṣasāḥ
| rājavaṃśāḥ ca vividhāḥ
ṛṣivaṃśāḥ ca śāśvatāḥ | na te asti
aviditam kiñcit asmin loke dvijottama
2. O knower of the natural law (dharma-jña), the gods, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas are all known to you. So too are the various royal dynasties and the eternal lineages of sages. Nothing in this world is unknown to you, O best of the twice-born (dvijottama).
कथां वेत्सि मुने दिव्यां मनुष्योरगरक्षसाम् ।
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं तत्त्वेन कथितं द्विज ॥३॥
3. kathāṁ vetsi mune divyāṁ manuṣyoragarakṣasām ,
etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotuṁ tattvena kathitaṁ dvija.

etat icchāmi aham śrotum tattvena kathitam dvija
3. O sage (muni), you know the divine story concerning humans, serpents, and rākṣasas. I desire to hear this truly narrated, O brahmin (dvija).
कुवलाश्व इति ख्यात इक्ष्वाकुरपराजितः ।
कथं नाम विपर्यासाद्धुन्धुमारत्वमागतः ॥४॥
4. kuvalāśva iti khyāta ikṣvākuraparājitaḥ ,
kathaṁ nāma viparyāsāddhundhumāratvamāgataḥ.

katham nāma viparyāsāt dhundhumāratvam āgataḥ
4. How did the celebrated, unconquered Ikṣvāku king, known as Kuvalāśva, come to attain the state of being Dhundhumāra (Dhundhumāratva) due to a transformation?
एतदिच्छामि तत्त्वेन ज्ञातुं भार्गवसत्तम ।
विपर्यस्तं यथा नाम कुवलाश्वस्य धीमतः ॥५॥
5. etadicchāmi tattvena jñātuṁ bhārgavasattama ,
viparyastaṁ yathā nāma kuvalāśvasya dhīmataḥ.
5. etat icchāmi tattvena jñātum bhārgavasattama
viparyastam yathā nāma kuvalāśvasya dhīmataḥ
5. O best among the Bhṛgus (bhārgavasattama), I wish to know accurately this - how the name of the intelligent Kuvalāśva (Kuvalāśva) was indeed transformed.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि शृणु राजन्युधिष्ठिर ।
धर्मिष्ठमिदमाख्यानं धुन्धुमारस्य तच्छृणु ॥६॥
6. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi śṛṇu rājanyudhiṣṭhira ,
dharmiṣṭhamidamākhyānaṁ dhundhumārasya tacchṛṇu.
6. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca hanta te kathayiṣyāmi śṛṇu rājan
yudhiṣṭhira dharmiṣṭham idam ākhyānam dhundhumārasya tat śṛṇu
6. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Indeed, I will narrate to you. Listen, O King (rājan) Yudhiṣṭhira! Listen to this most righteous (dharmiṣṭha) account of Dhundhumāra.
यथा स राजा इक्ष्वाकुः कुवलाश्वो महीपतिः ।
धुन्धुमारत्वमगमत्तच्छृणुष्व महीपते ॥७॥
7. yathā sa rājā ikṣvākuḥ kuvalāśvo mahīpatiḥ ,
dhundhumāratvamagamattacchṛṇuṣva mahīpate.
7. yathā sa rājā ikṣvākuḥ kuvalāśvaḥ mahīpatiḥ
dhundhumāratvam agamat tat śṛṇuṣva mahīpate
7. Listen, O king (mahīpati), to how that king Kuvalashva of the Ikshvaku dynasty, a lord of the earth, attained the state of Dhundhumara.
महर्षिर्विश्रुतस्तात उत्तङ्क इति भारत ।
मरुधन्वसु रम्येषु आश्रमस्तस्य कौरव ॥८॥
8. maharṣirviśrutastāta uttaṅka iti bhārata ,
marudhanvasu ramyeṣu āśramastasya kaurava.
8. maharṣiḥ viśrutaḥ tāta uttaṅkaḥ iti bhārata
marudhanvasu ramyeṣu āśramaḥ tasya kaurava
8. O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), O dear one (tāta), there was a renowned great sage named Utanka. His beautiful hermitage (āśrama), O descendant of Kuru (Kaurava), was located in delightful desert regions.
उत्तङ्कस्तु महाराज तपोऽतप्यत्सुदुश्चरम् ।
आरिराधयिषुर्विष्णुं बहून्वर्षगणान्विभो ॥९॥
9. uttaṅkastu mahārāja tapo'tapyatsuduścaram ,
ārirādhayiṣurviṣṇuṁ bahūnvarṣagaṇānvibho.
9. uttaṅkaḥ tu mahārāja tapaḥ atapyat sudurcaram
ārirādhayiṣuḥ viṣṇum bahūn varṣagaṇān vibho
9. But Utanka, O great king (mahārāja), practiced a very arduous spiritual austerity (tapas), desiring to propitiate Vishnu for many, many years, O almighty one (vibho).
तस्य प्रीतः स भगवान्साक्षाद्दर्शनमेयिवान् ।
दृष्ट्वैव चर्षिः प्रह्वस्तं तुष्टाव विविधैः स्तवैः ॥१०॥
10. tasya prītaḥ sa bhagavānsākṣāddarśanameyivān ,
dṛṣṭvaiva carṣiḥ prahvastaṁ tuṣṭāva vividhaiḥ stavaiḥ.
10. tasya prītaḥ sa bhagavān sākṣāt darśanam eyivān dṛṣṭvā
eva ca ṛṣiḥ prahvaḥ tam tuṣṭāva vividhaiḥ stavaiḥ
10. Pleased with Utanka, that Lord (Bhagavān) Himself appeared before him. And having seen Him, the sage (ṛṣi), filled with humility, praised Him with various hymns.
त्वया देव प्रजाः सर्वाः सदेवासुरमानवाः ।
स्थावराणि च भूतानि जङ्गमानि तथैव च ।
ब्रह्म वेदाश्च वेद्यं च त्वया सृष्टं महाद्युते ॥११॥
11. tvayā deva prajāḥ sarvāḥ sadevāsuramānavāḥ ,
sthāvarāṇi ca bhūtāni jaṅgamāni tathaiva ca ,
brahma vedāśca vedyaṁ ca tvayā sṛṣṭaṁ mahādyute.
11. tvayā deva prajāḥ sarvāḥ sadevāsuramānavāḥ
sthāvarāṇi ca bhūtāni
jaṅgamāni tathā eva ca brahma vedāḥ ca
vedyaṃ ca tvayā sṛṣṭaṃ mahādyute
11. O God, all beings, including gods, asuras, and humans, as well as immobile and mobile creatures, have been created by You. And by You, O greatly radiant one, Brahman (brahman), the Vedas, and all that is to be known have been brought into existence.
शिरस्ते गगनं देव नेत्रे शशिदिवाकरौ ।
निःश्वासः पवनश्चापि तेजोऽग्निश्च तवाच्युत ।
बाहवस्ते दिशः सर्वाः कुक्षिश्चापि महार्णवः ॥१२॥
12. śiraste gaganaṁ deva netre śaśidivākarau ,
niḥśvāsaḥ pavanaścāpi tejo'gniśca tavācyuta ,
bāhavaste diśaḥ sarvāḥ kukṣiścāpi mahārṇavaḥ.
12. śiras te gaganaṃ deva netre śaśidivākarau
niḥśvāsaḥ pavanaḥ ca api tejas
agniḥ ca tava acyuta bāhavaḥ te
diśaḥ sarvāḥ kukṣiḥ ca api mahārṇavaḥ
12. O God, Your head is the sky, and Your eyes are the moon and the sun. O Acyuta, Your breath is the wind, and Your splendor (tejas) is fire. Your arms are all the directions, and Your belly is the great ocean.
ऊरू ते पर्वता देव खं नाभिर्मधुसूदन ।
पादौ ते पृथिवी देवी रोमाण्योषधयस्तथा ॥१३॥
13. ūrū te parvatā deva khaṁ nābhirmadhusūdana ,
pādau te pṛthivī devī romāṇyoṣadhayastathā.
13. ūrū te parvatā deva khaṃ nābhiḥ madhusūdana
pādau te pṛthivī devī romāṇi oṣadhayaḥ tathā
13. O God, Your thighs are the mountains, and Your navel is space (kha), O Madhusūdana. Your feet are the divine Earth (pṛthivī), and Your body hairs are likewise the medicinal herbs.
इन्द्रसोमाग्निवरुणा देवासुरमहोरगाः ।
प्रह्वास्त्वामुपतिष्ठन्ति स्तुवन्तो विविधैः स्तवैः ॥१४॥
14. indrasomāgnivaruṇā devāsuramahoragāḥ ,
prahvāstvāmupatiṣṭhanti stuvanto vividhaiḥ stavaiḥ.
14. indrasomāgnivaruṇā devāsuramahoragāḥ prahvāḥ
tvām upatiṣṭhanti stuvantaḥ vividhaiḥ stavaiḥ
14. Indra, Soma, Agni, Varuṇa, along with gods, asuras, and great serpents, all stand humbly before You, praising with various hymns.
त्वया व्याप्तानि सर्वाणि भूतानि भुवनेश्वर ।
योगिनः सुमहावीर्याः स्तुवन्ति त्वां महर्षयः ॥१५॥
15. tvayā vyāptāni sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhuvaneśvara ,
yoginaḥ sumahāvīryāḥ stuvanti tvāṁ maharṣayaḥ.
15. tvayā vyāptāni sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhuvaneśvara
yoginaḥ sumahāvīryāḥ stuvanti tvām maharṣayaḥ
15. O Lord of the world, all beings are pervaded by you. Very mighty yogis and great sages praise you.
त्वयि तुष्टे जगत्स्वस्थं त्वयि क्रुद्धे महद्भयम् ।
भयानामपनेतासि त्वमेकः पुरुषोत्तम ॥१६॥
16. tvayi tuṣṭe jagatsvasthaṁ tvayi kruddhe mahadbhayam ,
bhayānāmapanetāsi tvamekaḥ puruṣottama.
16. tvayi tuṣṭe jagat svastham tvayi kruddhe mahat
bhayam bhayānām apanetā asi tvam ekaḥ puruṣottama
16. When you are pleased, the world is at peace. When you are angry, there is great fear. You alone are the remover of fears, O supreme cosmic person (puruṣa).
देवानां मानुषाणां च सर्वभूतसुखावहः ।
त्रिभिर्विक्रमणैर्देव त्रयो लोकास्त्वयाहृताः ।
असुराणां समृद्धानां विनाशश्च त्वया कृतः ॥१७॥
17. devānāṁ mānuṣāṇāṁ ca sarvabhūtasukhāvahaḥ ,
tribhirvikramaṇairdeva trayo lokāstvayāhṛtāḥ ,
asurāṇāṁ samṛddhānāṁ vināśaśca tvayā kṛtaḥ.
17. devānām mānuṣāṇām ca sarvabhūtasukhāvahaḥ
tribhiḥ vikramaṇaiḥ deva
trayaḥ lokāḥ tvayā āhṛtāḥ asurāṇām
samṛddhānām vināśaḥ ca tvayā kṛtaḥ
17. You are the bringer of happiness to all beings, both gods and humans. O God, by your three strides, the three worlds were seized by you. And you also brought about the destruction of the prosperous asuras.
तव विक्रमणैर्देवा निर्वाणमगमन्परम् ।
पराभवं च दैत्येन्द्रास्त्वयि क्रुद्धे महाद्युते ॥१८॥
18. tava vikramaṇairdevā nirvāṇamagamanparam ,
parābhavaṁ ca daityendrāstvayi kruddhe mahādyute.
18. tava vikramaṇaiḥ devā nirvāṇam agaman param
parābhavam ca daityendrāḥ tvayi kruddhe mahādyute
18. Through your strides, the gods attained supreme liberation (nirvāṇa). And the chiefs of the daityas suffered defeat when you were angry, O greatly effulgent one.
त्वं हि कर्ता विकर्ता च भूतानामिह सर्वशः ।
आराधयित्वा त्वां देवाः सुखमेधन्ति सर्वशः ॥१९॥
19. tvaṁ hi kartā vikartā ca bhūtānāmiha sarvaśaḥ ,
ārādhayitvā tvāṁ devāḥ sukhamedhanti sarvaśaḥ.
19. tvam hi kartā vikartā ca bhūtānām iha sarvaśaḥ
ārādhayitvā tvām devāḥ sukham edhanti sarvaśaḥ
19. Indeed, you are the creator and also the destroyer of all beings here in every respect. By worshipping you, the gods prosper completely.
एवं स्तुतो हृषीकेश उत्तङ्केन महात्मना ।
उत्तङ्कमब्रवीद्विष्णुः प्रीतस्तेऽहं वरं वृणु ॥२०॥
20. evaṁ stuto hṛṣīkeśa uttaṅkena mahātmanā ,
uttaṅkamabravīdviṣṇuḥ prītaste'haṁ varaṁ vṛṇu.
20. evam stutaḥ hṛṣīkeśaḥ uttaṅkena mahātmanā
uttaṅkam abravīt viṣṇuḥ prītaḥ te aham varam vṛṇu
20. Thus praised by the great-souled Uttanka, Hrishikesha (Viṣṇu) said to Uttanka, "I am pleased with you; choose a boon."
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
पर्याप्तो मे वरो ह्येष यदहं दृष्टवान्हरिम् ।
पुरुषं शाश्वतं दिव्यं स्रष्टारं जगतः प्रभुम् ॥२१॥
21. uttaṅka uvāca ,
paryāpto me varo hyeṣa yadahaṁ dṛṣṭavānharim ,
puruṣaṁ śāśvataṁ divyaṁ sraṣṭāraṁ jagataḥ prabhum.
21. uttaṅka uvāca paryāptaḥ me varaḥ hi eṣaḥ yat aham dṛṣṭavān
harim puruṣam śāśvatam divyam sraṣṭāram jagataḥ prabhum
21. Uttanka said, "This boon is indeed sufficient for me, that I have seen Hari (Viṣṇu) - the eternal, divine Person (puruṣa), the creator and lord of the world."
विष्णुरुवाच ।
प्रीतस्तेऽहमलौल्येन भक्त्या च द्विजसत्तम ।
अवश्यं हि त्वया ब्रह्मन्मत्तो ग्राह्यो वरो द्विज ॥२२॥
22. viṣṇuruvāca ,
prītaste'hamalaulyena bhaktyā ca dvijasattama ,
avaśyaṁ hi tvayā brahmanmatto grāhyo varo dvija.
22. viṣṇuḥ uvāca prītaḥ te aham alaulyena bhaktyā ca dvijasattama
avaśyam hi tvayā brahman mattaḥ grāhyaḥ varaḥ dvija
22. Vishnu said, "O best among twice-born ones (dvijas), I am pleased with you due to your steadfastness and devotion (bhakti). O Brahmin, O twice-born one (dvija), you must surely accept a boon from me."
एवं संछन्द्यमानस्तु वरेण हरिणा तदा ।
उत्तङ्कः प्राञ्जलिर्वव्रे वरं भरतसत्तम ॥२३॥
23. evaṁ saṁchandyamānastu vareṇa hariṇā tadā ,
uttaṅkaḥ prāñjalirvavre varaṁ bharatasattama.
23. evam saṃchandyamānaḥ tu vareṇa hariṇā tadā
uttaṅkaḥ prāñjaliḥ vavre varam bharatasattama
23. O best of Bharatas, when Hari thus gratified him with a boon at that time, Uttanka, with folded hands, then requested a boon.
यदि मे भगवान्प्रीतः पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणः ।
धर्मे सत्ये दमे चैव बुद्धिर्भवतु मे सदा ।
अभ्यासश्च भवेद्भक्त्या त्वयि नित्यं महेश्वर ॥२४॥
24. yadi me bhagavānprītaḥ puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇaḥ ,
dharme satye dame caiva buddhirbhavatu me sadā ,
abhyāsaśca bhavedbhaktyā tvayi nityaṁ maheśvara.
24. yadi me bhagavān prītaḥ puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇaḥ
dharme satye dame ca eva
buddhiḥ bhavatu me sadā abhyāsaḥ ca
bhavet bhaktyā tvayi nityam maheśvara
24. O lotus-eyed Lord, if You are pleased with me, then may my intellect always be directed towards righteousness (dharma), truth, and self-control. And O great Lord, may there always be constant practice through devotion (bhakti) in You.
विष्णुरुवाच ।
सर्वमेतद्धि भविता मत्प्रसादात्तव द्विज ।
प्रतिभास्यति योगश्च येन युक्तो दिवौकसाम् ।
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां महत्कार्यं करिष्यसि ॥२५॥
25. viṣṇuruvāca ,
sarvametaddhi bhavitā matprasādāttava dvija ,
pratibhāsyati yogaśca yena yukto divaukasām ,
trayāṇāmapi lokānāṁ mahatkāryaṁ kariṣyasi.
25. viṣṇuḥ uvāca sarvam etat hi bhavitā
matprasādāt tava dvija pratibhāsyati
yogaḥ ca yena yuktaḥ divaukasām trayāṇām
api lokānām mahat kāryam kariṣyasi
25. Vishnu said: 'Indeed, all this will come to pass for you by My grace, O twice-born (dvija). And the spiritual discipline (yoga) with which you are endowed will become manifest even among the celestials. You will accomplish a great task for all three worlds.'
उत्सादनार्थं लोकानां धुन्धुर्नाम महासुरः ।
तपस्यति तपो घोरं शृणु यस्तं हनिष्यति ॥२६॥
26. utsādanārthaṁ lokānāṁ dhundhurnāma mahāsuraḥ ,
tapasyati tapo ghoraṁ śṛṇu yastaṁ haniṣyati.
26. utsādanārtham lokānām dhundhuḥ nāma mahāsuraḥ
tapasyati tapaḥ ghoram śṛṇu yaḥ tam haniṣyati
26. For the destruction of the worlds, a great demon (asura) named Dhundhu is performing terrible austerity (tapas). Listen, [and I will tell you] who will kill him.
बृहदश्व इति ख्यातो भविष्यति महीपतिः ।
तस्य पुत्रः शुचिर्दान्तः कुवलाश्व इति श्रुतः ॥२७॥
27. bṛhadaśva iti khyāto bhaviṣyati mahīpatiḥ ,
tasya putraḥ śucirdāntaḥ kuvalāśva iti śrutaḥ.
27. bṛhadaśva iti khyātaḥ bhaviṣyati mahīpatiḥ
tasya putraḥ śuciḥ dāntaḥ kuvalāśva iti śrutaḥ
27. There will be a renowned king named Bṛhadaśva. His son, who is pure and self-controlled, will be known as Kuvalāśva.
स योगबलमास्थाय मामकं पार्थिवोत्तमः ।
शासनात्तव विप्रर्षे धुन्धुमारो भविष्यति ॥२८॥
28. sa yogabalamāsthāya māmakaṁ pārthivottamaḥ ,
śāsanāttava viprarṣe dhundhumāro bhaviṣyati.
28. saḥ yogabalam āsthāya māmakam pārthivottamaḥ
śāsanāt tava viprarṣe dhundhumāraḥ bhaviṣyati
28. That best among kings, relying on my power of spiritual discipline (yoga), will become Dhundhumāra by your command, O Brahmin-sage.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
उत्तङ्कमेवमुक्त्वा तु विष्णुरन्तरधीयत ॥२९॥
29. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
uttaṅkamevamuktvā tu viṣṇurantaradhīyata.
29. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca uttaṅkam evam
uktvā tu viṣṇuḥ antarahīyata
29. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having thus spoken to Uttanka, Vishnu disappeared.
