66.
O mighty-armed one, desist! You ought not to commit an untruth. O Keśava, (you should not go back on) what was said by you previously: 'I will not fight.'

67.
O Mādhava, the people will call you a liar (mithyāvādī). Indeed, this entire burden is mine; I will slay the one who is firm in his vow.

O Mādhava, I swear by (our) friendship, by truth, and by (my) good deeds, that I will bring about the complete destruction of the enemies, O tormentor of enemies.

Behold today itself the formidable warrior, who has taken a great vow (mahāvratam), being struck down, just like the waning moon (tārāpati) at the time of its destruction (antakāle), by chance.

However, Madhava, having heard the words of the great-souled Phalguna (Arjuna), said nothing, and, enraged, mounted the chariot again.

71.
Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, again rained a shower of arrows upon those two tiger-like men (naravyāghrau) who were standing on the chariot (rathasthau), just as a cloud (megha) rains down rain (vṛṣṭi) upon two mountains (acalau).

Your father, Devavrata (Bhishma), also took away the lives (prāṇāḥ) of the warriors, just as the sun (āditya) draws out the vital energies (tejāṃsi) with its rays (gabhasti) at the end of winter (śiśirātyaya).

Just as Arjuna, the son of Pāṇḍu, shattered the armies of the Kurus in battle, so too your grandfather (Bhīṣma) shattered the armies of the Pāṇḍavas in battle.

With their armies slain and scattered, disheartened and bewildered, they (the Pāṇḍava forces) were unable to look at Bhīṣma, who was unrivaled in battle, blazing with his own might like the midday sun.

O great king, as they were being struck down by Bhīṣma, like creatures at the end of an age by Time itself, the Pāṇḍavas, tormented by fear, looked around desperately (for a savior).

They found no protector, like cows stuck in mud; they were weak and trampled in battle by the mighty Bhīṣma, just like ants.

O descendant of Bharata, they were unable to face Bhishma, the great warrior, who was irresistible, showered a multitude of arrows, and tormented kings, just as one cannot look directly at the scorching sun, which blazes with arrow-like flames.

78.
While he (Bhishma) was thus crushing the Pāṇḍava army, the thousand-rayed sun then set. Following this, mental exhaustion (manas-avahāra) arose among the armies, which were weakened by fatigue.
