कृतास्त्रान्धार्तराष्ट्रांश्च पाण्डुपुत्रांश्च भारत ।
दृष्ट्वा द्रोणोऽब्रवीद्राजन्धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् ॥१॥

1. Vaiśampāyana said: O descendant of Bharata, seeing the sons of Pāṇḍu and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra who had mastered their weapons, Droṇa then said to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men:
कृपस्य सोमदत्तस्य बाह्लीकस्य च धीमतः ।
गाङ्गेयस्य च सांनिध्ये व्यासस्य विदुरस्य च ॥२॥
2. kṛpasya somadattasya bāhlīkasya ca dhīmataḥ ,
gāṅgeyasya ca sāṁnidhye vyāsasya vidurasya ca.

2. In the presence of Kṛpa, Somadatta, the wise Bāhlīka, Bhīṣma (Gāṅgeya), Vyāsa, and Vidura.
राजन्संप्राप्तविद्यास्ते कुमराः कुरुसत्तम ।
ते दर्शयेयुः स्वां शिक्षां राजन्ननुमते तव ॥३॥
3. rājansaṁprāptavidyāste kumarāḥ kurusattama ,
te darśayeyuḥ svāṁ śikṣāṁ rājannanumate tava.
3. rājan samprāpta-vidyāḥ te kumarāḥ kuru-sattama
te darśayeyuḥ svām śikṣām rājan anumate tava
3. O King, O best among Kurus, these princes have now mastered their education. With your permission, O King, they are ready to demonstrate their skills.
ततोऽब्रवीन्महाराजः प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ।
भारद्वाज महत्कर्म कृतं ते द्विजसत्तम ॥४॥
4. tato'bravīnmahārājaḥ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā ,
bhāradvāja mahatkarma kṛtaṁ te dvijasattama.
4. tataḥ abravīt mahārājaḥ prahṛṣṭena antarātmanā
bhāradvāja mahat karma kṛtam te dvijasattama
4. Then the great king, with a delighted heart, said, "O Bhāradvāja, O best among the twice-born, you have performed a great deed (karma)."
यदा तु मन्यसे कालं यस्मिन्देशे यथा यथा ।
तथा तथा विधानाय स्वयमाज्ञापयस्व माम् ॥५॥
5. yadā tu manyase kālaṁ yasmindeśe yathā yathā ,
tathā tathā vidhānāya svayamājñāpayasva mām.
5. yadā tu manyase kālam yasmin deśe yathā yathā
tathā tathā vidhānāya svayam ājñāpayasva mām
5. But whenever you deem the time appropriate, and in whatever place and manner (it is to be done), then you yourself instruct me for its performance.
स्पृहयाम्यद्य निर्वेदात्पुरुषाणां सचक्षुषाम् ।
अस्त्रहेतोः पराक्रान्तान्ये मे द्रक्ष्यन्ति पुत्रकान् ॥६॥
6. spṛhayāmyadya nirvedātpuruṣāṇāṁ sacakṣuṣām ,
astrahetoḥ parākrāntānye me drakṣyanti putrakān.
6. spṛhayāmi adya nirvedāt puruṣāṇām sacakṣuṣām
astrahetoḥ parākrāntān anye me drakṣyanti putrakān
6. Today, I lament with despair for discerning individuals (puruṣa), [because] others will see my valiant sons, engaged for the sake of weapons.
क्षत्तर्यद्गुरुराचार्यो ब्रवीति कुरु तत्तथा ।
न हीदृशं प्रियं मन्ये भविता धर्मवत्सल ॥७॥
7. kṣattaryadgururācāryo bravīti kuru tattathā ,
na hīdṛśaṁ priyaṁ manye bhavitā dharmavatsala.
7. kṣattar yat guruḥ ācāryaḥ bravīti kuru tat tathā
na hi īdṛśam priyam manye bhavitā dharmavatsala
7. "O Vidura, whatever the preceptor (guru) and teacher says, do that accordingly. Indeed, I do not believe that anything so pleasing will occur, O lover of righteousness (dharma)."
ततो राजानमामन्त्र्य विदुरानुगतो बहिः ।
भारद्वाजो महाप्राज्ञो मापयामास मेदिनीम् ।
समामवृक्षां निर्गुल्मामुदक्प्रवणसंस्थिताम् ॥८॥
8. tato rājānamāmantrya vidurānugato bahiḥ ,
bhāradvājo mahāprājño māpayāmāsa medinīm ,
samāmavṛkṣāṁ nirgulmāmudakpravaṇasaṁsthitām.
8. tataḥ rājānam āmantrya vidurānugataḥ
bahiḥ bhāradvājaḥ mahāprājñaḥ
māpayāmāsa medinīm samām avṛkṣām
nirgulmām udakpravaṇasaṃsthitām
8. Then, having taken leave of the king, the greatly wise Bhāradvāja, accompanied by Vidura, went outside. He then had the ground measured, a plot that was level, treeless, devoid of bushes, and situated with a gentle slope towards the north.
तस्यां भूमौ बलिं चक्रे तिथौ नक्षत्रपूजिते ।
अवघुष्टं पुरे चापि तदर्थं वदतां वर ॥९॥
9. tasyāṁ bhūmau baliṁ cakre tithau nakṣatrapūjite ,
avaghuṣṭaṁ pure cāpi tadarthaṁ vadatāṁ vara.
9. tasyām bhūmau balim cakre tithau nakṣatrapūjite
avaghuṣṭam pure ca api tadartham vadatām vara
9. O best of speakers, on that ground, he performed an offering (bali) on an auspicious day graced by particular constellations. For that purpose, an announcement was also made throughout the city.
रङ्गभूमौ सुविपुलं शास्त्रदृष्टं यथाविधि ।
प्रेक्षागारं सुविहितं चक्रुस्तत्र च शिल्पिनः ।
राज्ञः सर्वायुधोपेतं स्त्रीणां चैव नरर्षभ ॥१०॥
10. raṅgabhūmau suvipulaṁ śāstradṛṣṭaṁ yathāvidhi ,
prekṣāgāraṁ suvihitaṁ cakrustatra ca śilpinaḥ ,
rājñaḥ sarvāyudhopetaṁ strīṇāṁ caiva nararṣabha.
10. raṅgabhūmau suvipulam śāstradṛṣṭam
yathāvidhi prekṣāgāram suvihitam
cakruḥ tatra ca śilpinaḥ rājñaḥ
sarvāyudhopetam strīṇām ca eva nararṣabha
10. O bull among men, on that very spacious arena ground, the artisans meticulously constructed an assembly hall (prekṣāgāra) in accordance with scriptural guidance and established procedures. This hall, which was equipped with all weapons, was intended for the king and also for the women.
मञ्चांश्च कारयामासुस्तत्र जानपदा जनाः ।
विपुलानुच्छ्रयोपेताञ्शिबिकाश्च महाधनाः ॥११॥
11. mañcāṁśca kārayāmāsustatra jānapadā janāḥ ,
vipulānucchrayopetāñśibikāśca mahādhanāḥ.
11. mañcān ca kārayāmāsuḥ tatra jānapadāḥ janāḥ
vipulān ucchrayopetān śibikāḥ ca mahādhanāḥ
11. Furthermore, the people from the provinces had spacious and elevated platforms constructed there, as well as very valuable palanquins.
तस्मिंस्ततोऽहनि प्राप्ते राजा ससचिवस्तदा ।
भीष्मं प्रमुखतः कृत्वा कृपं चाचार्यसत्तमम् ॥१२॥
12. tasmiṁstato'hani prāpte rājā sasacivastadā ,
bhīṣmaṁ pramukhataḥ kṛtvā kṛpaṁ cācāryasattamam.
12. tasmin tataḥ ahani prāpte rājā sasacivaḥ tadā
bhīṣmam pramukhataḥ kṛtvā kṛpam ca ācāryasattamam
12. Then, when that appointed day arrived, the king, accompanied by his ministers, and placing Bhishma and Kripa, the most excellent of preceptors, at the very front (or: in charge),...
मुक्ताजालपरिक्षिप्तं वैडूर्यमणिभूषितम् ।
शातकुम्भमयं दिव्यं प्रेक्षागारमुपागमत् ॥१३॥
13. muktājālaparikṣiptaṁ vaiḍūryamaṇibhūṣitam ,
śātakumbhamayaṁ divyaṁ prekṣāgāramupāgamat.
13. muktājālaparikṣiptam vaiḍūryamaṇibhūṣitam
śātakuṇbhamayam divyam prekṣāgāram upāgamat
13. He then approached the divine assembly hall (prekṣāgāra), which was encompassed by nets of pearls, embellished with cat's-eye gems (vaiḍūrya), and crafted entirely from pure gold.
गान्धारी च महाभागा कुन्ती च जयतां वर ।
स्त्रियश्च सर्वा या राज्ञः सप्रेष्याः सपरिच्छदाः ।
हर्षादारुरुहुर्मञ्चान्मेरुं देवस्त्रियो यथा ॥१४॥
14. gāndhārī ca mahābhāgā kuntī ca jayatāṁ vara ,
striyaśca sarvā yā rājñaḥ sapreṣyāḥ saparicchadāḥ ,
harṣādāruruhurmañcānmeruṁ devastriyo yathā.
14. gāndhārī ca mahābhāgā kuntī ca jayatām
vara striyaḥ ca sarvāḥ yāḥ rājñaḥ
sapreṣyāḥ saparicchadāḥ harṣāt
āruruhuḥ mañcān merum devastriyaḥ yathā
14. O best among victors, the greatly esteemed Gandhari and Kunti, along with all the king's women, their female attendants, and their entire retinue, joyfully ascended the viewing platforms, just as celestial women ascend Mount Meru.
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियाद्यं च चातुर्वर्ण्यं पुराद्द्रुतम् ।
दर्शनेप्सु समभ्यागात्कुमाराणां कृतास्त्रताम् ॥१५॥
15. brāhmaṇakṣatriyādyaṁ ca cāturvarṇyaṁ purāddrutam ,
darśanepsu samabhyāgātkumārāṇāṁ kṛtāstratām.
15. brāhmaṇakṣatriyādyaṃ ca cāturvarṇyaṃ purāt drutam
darśanepsu samabhyāgāt kumārāṇām kṛtāstratām
15. And the four social orders (varṇas), beginning with the Brahmins and Kshatriyas, swiftly came from the city, eager to witness the princes' skill in arms.
प्रवादितैश्च वादित्रैर्जनकौतूहलेन च ।
महार्णव इव क्षुब्धः समाजः सोऽभवत्तदा ॥१६॥
16. pravāditaiśca vāditrairjanakautūhalena ca ,
mahārṇava iva kṣubdhaḥ samājaḥ so'bhavattadā.
16. pravāditaiḥ ca vāditraiḥ janakautūhalena ca
mahārṇavaḥ iva kṣubdhaḥ samājaḥ saḥ abhavat tadā
16. With musical instruments being played and fueled by the people's curiosity, that assembly then became agitated like a great ocean.
ततः शुक्लाम्बरधरः शुक्लयज्ञोपवीतवान् ।
शुक्लकेशः सितश्मश्रुः शुक्लमाल्यानुलेपनः ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ śuklāmbaradharaḥ śuklayajñopavītavān ,
śuklakeśaḥ sitaśmaśruḥ śuklamālyānulepanaḥ.
17. tataḥ śuklāmbaradharaḥ śuklayajñopavītavān
śuklakeśaḥ sitaśmaśruḥ śuklamālyānulepanaḥ
17. Then, [he appeared] wearing white garments, adorned with a white sacred thread (yajñopavīta), with white hair and a white beard, and smeared with white garlands and ointments.
रङ्गमध्यं तदाचार्यः सपुत्रः प्रविवेश ह ।
नभो जलधरैर्हीनं साङ्गारक इवांशुमान् ॥१८॥
18. raṅgamadhyaṁ tadācāryaḥ saputraḥ praviveśa ha ,
nabho jaladharairhīnaṁ sāṅgāraka ivāṁśumān.
18. raṅgamadhyam tadā ācāryaḥ saputraḥ praviveśa ha
nabhaḥ jaladharaiḥ hīnam sāṅgārakaḥ iva aṃśumān
18. Indeed, that preceptor (guru), accompanied by his son, then entered the center of the arena, just as the sun (aṃśumān) with Mars (aṅgāraka) appears in a cloudless sky.
स यथासमयं चक्रे बलिं बलवतां वरः ।
ब्राह्मणांश्चात्र मन्त्रज्ञान्वाचयामास मङ्गलम् ॥१९॥
19. sa yathāsamayaṁ cakre baliṁ balavatāṁ varaḥ ,
brāhmaṇāṁścātra mantrajñānvācayāmāsa maṅgalam.
19. sa yathāsamayaṃ cakre balim balavatām varaḥ
brāhmaṇāḥ ca atra mantrajñān vācayāmāsa maṅgalam
19. He, the foremost among the powerful, made offerings at the appropriate time. Thereupon, he had the brahmins, who were knowledgeable in sacred formulas (mantras), recite auspicious benedictions.
अथ पुण्याहघोषस्य पुण्यस्य तदनन्तरम् ।
विविशुर्विविधं गृह्य शस्त्रोपकरणं नराः ॥२०॥
20. atha puṇyāhaghoṣasya puṇyasya tadanantaram ,
viviśurvividhaṁ gṛhya śastropakaraṇaṁ narāḥ.
20. atha puṇyāhaghoṣasya puṇyasya tat anantaram
viviśuḥ vividham gṛhya śastropakaraṇam narāḥ
20. Then, immediately following the sacred proclamation for an auspicious day, men entered, carrying various weapons and equipment.
ततो बद्धतनुत्राणा बद्धकक्ष्या महाबलाः ।
बद्धतूणाः सधनुषो विविशुर्भरतर्षभाः ॥२१॥
21. tato baddhatanutrāṇā baddhakakṣyā mahābalāḥ ,
baddhatūṇāḥ sadhanuṣo viviśurbharatarṣabhāḥ.
21. tataḥ baddhatanutrāṇāḥ baddhakakṣyāḥ mahābalāḥ
baddhatūṇāḥ sadhanuṣaḥ viviśuḥ bharatarṣabhāḥ
21. Then, the greatly powerful bulls among the Bhāratas (bharatarṣabhāḥ), having secured their armor, tied their waistbands, and fastened their quivers with their bows, entered.
अनुज्येष्ठं च ते तत्र युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः ।
चक्रुरस्त्रं महावीर्याः कुमाराः परमाद्भुतम् ॥२२॥
22. anujyeṣṭhaṁ ca te tatra yudhiṣṭhirapurogamāḥ ,
cakrurastraṁ mahāvīryāḥ kumārāḥ paramādbhutam.
22. anujyeṣṭham ca te tatra yudhiṣṭhirapuroramāḥ
cakruḥ astram mahāvīryāḥ kumārāḥ paramādbhutam
22. And there, those exceedingly valiant princes, led by Yudhiṣṭhira, performed a most amazing display of weapon-skill (astra) according to their seniority.
केचिच्छराक्षेपभयाच्छिरांस्यवननामिरे ।
मनुजा धृष्टमपरे वीक्षां चक्रुः सविस्मयाः ॥२३॥
23. keciccharākṣepabhayācchirāṁsyavananāmire ,
manujā dhṛṣṭamapare vīkṣāṁ cakruḥ savismayāḥ.
23. kecit śarākṣepabhayāt śirāṃsi avananāmire
manujāḥ dhṛṣṭam apare vīkṣām cakruḥ savismayāḥ
23. Some individuals, out of fear of the incoming arrows, bowed their heads. Others, however, observed boldly and with astonishment.
ते स्म लक्ष्याणि विविधुर्बाणैर्नामाङ्कशोभितैः ।
विविधैर्लाघवोत्सृष्टैरुह्यन्तो वाजिभिर्द्रुतम् ॥२४॥
24. te sma lakṣyāṇi vividhurbāṇairnāmāṅkaśobhitaiḥ ,
vividhairlāghavotsṛṣṭairuhyanto vājibhirdrutam.
24. te sma lakṣyāṇi vividhuḥ bāṇaiḥ nāmāṅkaśobhitaiḥ
vividhaiḥ lāghavotsṛṣṭaiḥ uhyantaḥ vājibhiḥ drutam
24. While being swiftly carried by horses, they struck various targets with arrows adorned with their names and released with great skill.
तत्कुमारबलं तत्र गृहीतशरकार्मुकम् ।
गन्धर्वनगराकारं प्रेक्ष्य ते विस्मिताभवन् ॥२५॥
25. tatkumārabalaṁ tatra gṛhītaśarakārmukam ,
gandharvanagarākāraṁ prekṣya te vismitābhavan.
25. tat kumārabaIam tatra gṛhītaśarakārmukam
gandharvanagarākāram prekṣya te vismitāḥ abhavan
25. Upon seeing that army of princes there, holding their bows and arrows, appearing like an ethereal city of the Gandharvas, they became astonished.
सहसा चुक्रुशुस्तत्र नराः शतसहस्रशः ।
विस्मयोत्फुल्लनयनाः साधु साध्विति भारत ॥२६॥
26. sahasā cukruśustatra narāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ ,
vismayotphullanayanāḥ sādhu sādhviti bhārata.
26. sahasā cukruśuḥ tatra narāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ
vismayotphullanayanāḥ sādhu sādhu iti bhārata
26. O Bhārata, suddenly, hundreds of thousands of men, with their eyes wide open in wonder, shouted there, "Excellent! Excellent!"
कृत्वा धनुषि ते मार्गान्रथचर्यासु चासकृत् ।
गजपृष्ठेऽश्वपृष्ठे च नियुद्धे च महाबलाः ॥२७॥
27. kṛtvā dhanuṣi te mārgānrathacaryāsu cāsakṛt ,
gajapṛṣṭhe'śvapṛṣṭhe ca niyuddhe ca mahābalāḥ.
27. kṛtvā dhanuṣi te mārgān rathacaryāsu ca asakṛt
gajapṛṣṭhe aśvapṛṣṭhe ca niyuddhe ca mahābalāḥ
27. The mighty ones demonstrated their techniques repeatedly in archery, in chariot driving, on elephant-backs, on horse-backs, and in close combat.
गृहीतखड्गचर्माणस्ततो भूयः प्रहारिणः ।
त्सरुमार्गान्यथोद्दिष्टांश्चेरुः सर्वासु भूमिषु ॥२८॥
28. gṛhītakhaḍgacarmāṇastato bhūyaḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
tsarumārgānyathoddiṣṭāṁśceruḥ sarvāsu bhūmiṣu.
28. gṛhītakhadgacarmāṇaḥ tataḥ bhūyaḥ prahāriṇaḥ
tsarumārgān yathāuddiṣṭān ca ceruḥ sarvāsu bhūmiṣu
28. Then, those mighty fighters, having taken up swords and shields, again performed the sword-hilt techniques (tsarumārgān) as they had been instructed, moving about across all the designated grounds.
लाघवं सौष्ठवं शोभां स्थिरत्वं दृढमुष्टिताम् ।
ददृशुस्तत्र सर्वेषां प्रयोगे खड्गचर्मणाम् ॥२९॥
29. lāghavaṁ sauṣṭhavaṁ śobhāṁ sthiratvaṁ dṛḍhamuṣṭitām ,
dadṛśustatra sarveṣāṁ prayoge khaḍgacarmaṇām.
29. lāghavam sauṣṭhavam śobhām sthiratvam dṛḍhamuṣṭitām
dadṛśuḥ tatra sarveṣām prayoge khaḍgacarmaṇām
29. There, in the display of swords and shields by all, they observed lightness, grace, splendor, steadiness, and a firm grip.
अथ तौ नित्यसंहृष्टौ सुयोधनवृकोदरौ ।
अवतीर्णौ गदाहस्तावेकशृङ्गाविवाचलौ ॥३०॥
30. atha tau nityasaṁhṛṣṭau suyodhanavṛkodarau ,
avatīrṇau gadāhastāvekaśṛṅgāvivācalau.
30. atha tau nityasaṃhṛṣṭau suyodhanavṛkodarau
avatīrṇau gadāhastau ekaśṛṅgau iva acalau
30. Then, those two - Suyodhana and Vṛkodara - always eager, entered the arena with maces in hand, like two single-peaked mountains.
बद्धकक्ष्यौ महाबाहू पौरुषे पर्यवस्थितौ ।
बृंहन्तौ वाशिताहेतोः समदाविव कुञ्जरौ ॥३१॥
31. baddhakakṣyau mahābāhū pauruṣe paryavasthitau ,
bṛṁhantau vāśitāhetoḥ samadāviva kuñjarau.
31. baddhakakṣyau mahābāhū pauruṣe paryavasthitau
bṛṃhantau vāśitāhetoḥ samadau iva kuñjarau
31. With their girdles tied, those mighty-armed warriors were intent on valor, roaring like two rutting elephants for the sake of a female.
तौ प्रदक्षिणसव्यानि मण्डलानि महाबलौ ।
चेरतुर्निर्मलगदौ समदाविव गोवृषौ ॥३२॥
32. tau pradakṣiṇasavyāni maṇḍalāni mahābalau ,
ceraturnirmalagadau samadāviva govṛṣau.
32. tau pradakṣiṇasavyāni maṇḍalāni mahābalau
ceratuḥ nirmalagadau samadau iva govr̥ṣau
32. Those two mighty warriors moved in clockwise and counter-clockwise circles with their shining maces, like two rutting bulls.
विदुरो धृतराष्ट्राय गान्धार्यै पाण्डवारणिः ।
न्यवेदयेतां तत्सर्वं कुमाराणां विचेष्टितम् ॥३३॥
33. viduro dhṛtarāṣṭrāya gāndhāryai pāṇḍavāraṇiḥ ,
nyavedayetāṁ tatsarvaṁ kumārāṇāṁ viceṣṭitam.
33. viduraḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrāya gāndhāryai pāṇḍavāraṇiḥ
nyavedayetām tat sarvaṃ kumārāṇām viceṣṭitam
33. Vidura, who was the protector of the Pandavas, reported all those actions of the princes to Dhritarashtra and Gandhari.
