सिन्धुराजे हते तात समरे सव्यसाचिना ।
तथैव भूरिश्रवसि किमासीद्वो मनस्तदा ॥१॥

sindhurāje hate tāta samare savyasācinā ,
tathaiva bhūriśravasi kimāsīdvo manastadā.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O dear one, when the King of Sindhu was slain in battle by Arjuna (savyasācin), and similarly when Bhūriśravas was [slain], what were your thoughts then?
दुर्योधनेन च द्रोणस्तथोक्तः कुरुसंसदि ।
किमुक्तवान्परं तस्मात्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥२॥
2. duryodhanena ca droṇastathoktaḥ kurusaṁsadi ,
kimuktavānparaṁ tasmāttanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.

kim uktavān param tasmāt tat mama ācakṣva sañjaya

2. And Droṇa, thus addressed by Duryodhana in the Kuru assembly, what did he say further in response to that? Tell me that, O Sañjaya.
संजय उवाच ।
निष्टानको महानासीत्सैन्यानां तव भारत ।
सैन्धवं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भूरिश्रवसमेव च ॥३॥
3. saṁjaya uvāca ,
niṣṭānako mahānāsītsainyānāṁ tava bhārata ,
saindhavaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā bhūriśravasameva ca.
3. sañjayaḥ uvāca niṣṭānakaḥ mahān āsīt sainyānām tava
bhārata saindhavam nihatam dṛṣṭvā bhūriśravasam eva ca
3. sañjayaḥ uvāca: bhārata,
saindhavam nihatam bhūriśravasam eva ca dṛṣṭvā,
tava sainyānām niṣṭānakaḥ mahān āsīt
3. Sañjaya said: O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), a great lamentation arose among your armies upon seeing the King of Sindhu slain, and Bhūriśravas also.
मन्त्रितं तव पुत्रस्य ते सर्वमवमेनिरे ।
येन मन्त्रेण निहताः शतशः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥४॥
4. mantritaṁ tava putrasya te sarvamavamenire ,
yena mantreṇa nihatāḥ śataśaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ.
4. mantritam tava putrasya te sarvam avamenire
yena mantreṇa nihatāḥ śataśaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
4. te tava putrasya mantritam sarvam avamenire,
yena mantreṇa śataśaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ nihatāḥ.
4. They all disregarded the counsel of your son, by means of which counsel hundreds of excellent warriors (kṣatriyarṣabha) were slain.
द्रोणस्तु तद्वचः श्रुत्वा पुत्रस्य तव दुर्मनाः ।
मुहूर्तमिव तु ध्यात्वा भृशमार्तोऽभ्यभाषत ॥५॥
5. droṇastu tadvacaḥ śrutvā putrasya tava durmanāḥ ,
muhūrtamiva tu dhyātvā bhṛśamārto'bhyabhāṣata.
5. droṇaḥ tu tat vacaḥ śrutvā putrasya tava durmanāḥ
muhūrtam iva tu dhyātvā bhṛśam ārtaḥ abhyabhāṣata
5. tu droṇaḥ tava putrasya tat vacaḥ śrutvā durmanāḥ (san),
muhūrtam iva dhyātvā,
bhṛśam ārtaḥ abhyabhāṣata.
5. But Droṇa, upon hearing that speech from your son, became distressed in mind. Having pondered for a moment, he then spoke, greatly pained.
दुर्योधन किमेवं मां वाक्शरैरभिकृन्तसि ।
अजय्यं समरे नित्यं ब्रुवाणं सव्यसाचिनम् ॥६॥
6. duryodhana kimevaṁ māṁ vākśarairabhikṛntasi ,
ajayyaṁ samare nityaṁ bruvāṇaṁ savyasācinam.
6. duryodhana kim evam mām vākśaraiḥ abhikṛntasi
ajayyam samare nityam bruvāṇam savyasācinam
6. duryodhana! evam vākśaraiḥ mām kim abhikṛntasi? (ahaṃ hi) samare savyasācinam nityam ajayyam bruvāṇam (asmi).
6. O Duryodhana, why do you pierce me with such verbal arrows, considering that I always proclaim Savyasācin (Arjuna) to be unconquerable in battle?
एतेनैवार्जुनं ज्ञातुमलं कौरव संयुगे ।
यच्छिखण्ड्यवधीद्भीष्मं पाल्यमानः किरीटिना ॥७॥
7. etenaivārjunaṁ jñātumalaṁ kaurava saṁyuge ,
yacchikhaṇḍyavadhīdbhīṣmaṁ pālyamānaḥ kirīṭinā.
7. etena eva arjunam jñātum alam kaurava saṃyuge
yat śikhaṇḍī avadhīt bhīṣmam pālyamānaḥ kirīṭinā
7. kaurava! etena eva saṃyuge arjunam jñātum alam yat kirīṭinā pālyamānaḥ śikhaṇḍī bhīṣmam avadhīt.
7. O Kaurava, by this act alone, it is enough to understand Arjuna's prowess in battle: that Shikhaṇḍī was able to slay Bhīṣma while being protected by Kirīṭin (Arjuna).
अवध्यं निहतं दृष्ट्वा संयुगे देवमानुषैः ।
तदैवाज्ञासिषमहं नेयमस्तीति भारती ॥८॥
8. avadhyaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā saṁyuge devamānuṣaiḥ ,
tadaivājñāsiṣamahaṁ neyamastīti bhāratī.
8. avadhyam nihatam dṛṣṭvā saṃyuge devamānuṣaiḥ
tadā eva ajñāsiṣam aham na iyam asti iti bhāratī
8. aham avadhyam devamānuṣaiḥ saṃyuge nihatam dṛṣṭvā
tadā eva iyam bhāratī na asti iti ajñāsiṣam
8. Seeing him, who was considered unkillable, slain in battle by gods and men, I then knew at that very moment that this fortune of the Bhāratas (Bhāratī) would not endure.
यं पुंसां त्रिषु लोकेषु सर्वशूरममंस्महि ।
तस्मिन्विनिहते शूरे किं शेषं पर्युपास्महे ॥९॥
9. yaṁ puṁsāṁ triṣu lokeṣu sarvaśūramamaṁsmahi ,
tasminvinihate śūre kiṁ śeṣaṁ paryupāsmahe.
9. yam puṃsām triṣu lokeṣu sarvaśūram amaṃsmahi
tasmin vinihate śūre kim śeṣam paryupāsmahe
9. yam puṃsām triṣu lokeṣu sarvaśūram amaṃsmahi,
tasmin śūre vinihate (sati),
kim śeṣam (naḥ) paryupāsmahe
9. When that hero, whom we considered the bravest among all men in the three worlds, has been killed, what remains for us to rely upon?
यान्स्म तान्ग्लहते तातः शकुनिः कुरुसंसदि ।
अक्षान्न तेऽक्षा निशिता बाणास्ते शत्रुतापनाः ॥१०॥
10. yānsma tānglahate tātaḥ śakuniḥ kurusaṁsadi ,
akṣānna te'kṣā niśitā bāṇāste śatrutāpanāḥ.
10. yān sma tān glahate tātaḥ śakuniḥ kurusaṃsadi
akṣān na te akṣāḥ niśitāḥ bāṇāḥ te śatrutāpanāḥ
10. tāta śakuniḥ kurusaṃsadi yān sma tān glahate,
te akṣāḥ na.
te niśitāḥ śatrutāpanāḥ bāṇāḥ.
10. O father, those things with which Shakuni gambled in the assembly of the Kurus—those were not dice (akṣa); rather, they were sharp arrows, tormenting enemies.
त एते घ्नन्ति नस्तात विशिखा जयचोदिताः ।
यांस्तदा ख्याप्यमानांस्त्वं विदुरेण न बुध्यसे ॥११॥
11. ta ete ghnanti nastāta viśikhā jayacoditāḥ ,
yāṁstadā khyāpyamānāṁstvaṁ vidureṇa na budhyase.
11. te ete ghnanti naḥ tāta viśikhāḥ jayacoditāḥ
yān tadā khyāpyamānān tvam vidureṇa na budhyase
11. tāta jayacoditāḥ te ete viśikhāḥ naḥ ghnanti.
tvam tadā vidureṇa khyāpyamānān yān na budhyase.
11. O father, these very arrows, impelled by victory, are now striking us down—arrows that you did not comprehend then, even though they were being explained by Vidura.
तास्ता विलपतश्चापि विदुरस्य महात्मनः ।
धीरस्य वाचो नाश्रौषीः क्षेमाय वदतः शिवाः ॥१२॥
12. tāstā vilapataścāpi vidurasya mahātmanaḥ ,
dhīrasya vāco nāśrauṣīḥ kṣemāya vadataḥ śivāḥ.
12. tāstā vilapataḥ ca api vidurasya mahātmanaḥ
dhīrasya vācaḥ na aśrauṣīḥ kṣemāya vadataḥ śivāḥ
12. vidurasya mahātmanaḥ dhīrasya vilapataḥ api
kṣemāya vadataḥ tāstā śivāḥ vācaḥ na aśrauṣīḥ
12. You did not listen to those auspicious and beneficial words spoken by the wise and great-souled (mahātman) Vidura, even as he was lamenting, words which were for your well-being.
तदिदं वर्तते घोरमागतं वैशसं महत् ।
तस्यावमानाद्वाक्यस्य दुर्योधन कृते तव ॥१३॥
13. tadidaṁ vartate ghoramāgataṁ vaiśasaṁ mahat ,
tasyāvamānādvākyasya duryodhana kṛte tava.
13. tat idam vartate ghoram āgatam vaiśasam mahat
tasya avamānāt vākyasya duryodhana kṛte tava
13. duryodhana,
tat idam ghoram mahat vaiśasam āgatam vartate,
tava tasya vākyasya avamānāt kṛte
13. O Duryodhana, this great and dreadful calamity (vaiśasam) has now come to pass, all because of your disregard for those words.
यच्च नः प्रेक्षमाणानां कृष्णामानाययः सभाम् ।
अनर्हतीं कुले जातां सर्वधर्मानुचारिणीम् ॥१४॥
14. yacca naḥ prekṣamāṇānāṁ kṛṣṇāmānāyayaḥ sabhām ,
anarhatīṁ kule jātāṁ sarvadharmānucāriṇīm.
14. yat ca naḥ prekṣamāṇānām kṛṣṇām ānayayaḥ sabhām
anarhatīm kule jātām sarvadharmānucāriṇīm
14. ca yat naḥ prekṣamāṇānām kule jātām anarhatīm
sarvadharmānucāriṇīm kṛṣṇām sabhām ānayayaḥ
14. And that act of yours, when, as we looked on, you brought Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi) to the assembly, though she was born into a noble family, was undeserving of such treatment, and observed all aspects of righteous conduct (dharma).
तस्याधर्मस्य गान्धारे फलं प्राप्तमिदं त्वया ।
नो चेत्पापं परे लोके त्वमर्च्छेथास्ततोऽधिकम् ॥१५॥
15. tasyādharmasya gāndhāre phalaṁ prāptamidaṁ tvayā ,
no cetpāpaṁ pare loke tvamarcchethāstato'dhikam.
15. tasya adharmasya gāndhāre phalam prāptam idam tvayā
no cet pāpam pare loke tvam arcchethāḥ tataḥ adhikam
15. gāndhāre,
tasya adharmasya idam phalam tvayā prāptam.
no cet tvam pare loke tataḥ adhikam pāpam arcchethāḥ
15. O descendant of Gāndhārī, you have now received this consequence (phalam) for that unrighteous act (adharma). Otherwise, you would incur even greater sin (pāpam) in the afterlife (loka).
यच्च तान्पाण्डवान्द्यूते विषमेण विजित्य ह ।
प्राव्राजयस्तदारण्ये रौरवाजिनवाससः ॥१६॥
16. yacca tānpāṇḍavāndyūte viṣameṇa vijitya ha ,
prāvrājayastadāraṇye rauravājinavāsasaḥ.
16. yat ca tān pāṇḍavān dyūte viṣameṇa vijitya
ha prāvrājayaḥ tat araṇye rauravājinavāsasaḥ
16. yat ca (saḥ) viṣameṇa dyūte tān pāṇḍavān vijitya
ha tat araṇye rauravājinavāsasaḥ prāvrājayaḥ
16. And because, having unfairly defeated those Pāṇḍavas in a game of dice, he then banished them to the forest, (where they were) clothed in the skins of Ruru deer.
पुत्राणामिव चैतेषां धर्ममाचरतां सदा ।
द्रुह्येत्को नु नरो लोके मदन्यो ब्राह्मणब्रुवः ॥१७॥
17. putrāṇāmiva caiteṣāṁ dharmamācaratāṁ sadā ,
druhyetko nu naro loke madanyo brāhmaṇabruvaḥ.
17. putrāṇām iva ca eteṣām dharmam ācaratām sadā
druhyet kaḥ nu naraḥ loke mat anyaḥ brāhmaṇabruvaḥ
17. loke mat anyaḥ brāhmaṇabruvaḥ iva ca kaḥ nu naraḥ
putrāṇām sadā dharmam ācaratām eteṣām druhyet
17. What man in this world, other than a mere Brahmin by name (brāhmaṇabruvaḥ) like me, would betray these (Pāṇḍavas) who always practice (dharma) intrinsic nature, just like sons?
पाण्डवानामयं कोपस्त्वया शकुनिना सह ।
आहृतो धृतराष्ट्रस्य संमते कुरुसंसदि ॥१८॥
18. pāṇḍavānāmayaṁ kopastvayā śakuninā saha ,
āhṛto dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saṁmate kurusaṁsadi.
18. pāṇḍavānām ayam kopaḥ tvayā śakuninā saha
āhṛtaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saṃmate kurusaṃsadi
18. tvayā śakuninā saha ayam pāṇḍavānām kopaḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saṃmate kurusaṃsadi āhṛtaḥ
18. This anger of the Pāṇḍavas, along with Śakuni, was brought upon Dhṛtarāṣṭra by you, with his consent, in the assembly of the Kurus.
दुःशासनेन संयुक्तः कर्णेन परिवर्धितः ।
क्षत्तुर्वाक्यमनादृत्य त्वयाभ्यस्तः पुनः पुनः ॥१९॥
19. duḥśāsanena saṁyuktaḥ karṇena parivardhitaḥ ,
kṣatturvākyamanādṛtya tvayābhyastaḥ punaḥ punaḥ.
19. duḥśāsanena saṃyuktaḥ karṇena parivardhitaḥ
kṣattuḥ vākyam anādṛtya tvayā abhyastaḥ punaḥ punaḥ
19. tvayā duḥśāsanena saṃyuktaḥ karṇena parivardhitaḥ kṣattuḥ
vākyam anādṛtya punaḥ punaḥ abhyastaḥ (ayam kopaḥ)
19. (This anger) was joined by Duḥśāsana, amplified by Karṇa, and repeatedly indulged in by you, disregarding the advice of Vidura (kṣattṛ).
यत्तत्सर्वे पराभूय पर्यवारयतार्जुनिम् ।
सिन्धुराजानमाश्रित्य स वो मध्ये कथं हतः ॥२०॥
20. yattatsarve parābhūya paryavārayatārjunim ,
sindhurājānamāśritya sa vo madhye kathaṁ hataḥ.
20. yat tat sarve parābhūya paryavārayata arjunim
sindhurājānam āśritya saḥ vaḥ madhye katham hataḥ
20. sindhurājānam āśritya yat tat sarve parābhūya
arjunim paryavārayata saḥ vaḥ madhye katham hataḥ
20. How was that King of Sindhu (Sindhurāja), who had taken refuge [in you all], and whom all of you, having defeated [the enemies], protected by surrounding him from Arjuna, killed right in your midst?
कथं त्वयि च कर्णे च कृपे शल्ये च जीवति ।
अश्वत्थाम्नि च कौरव्य निधनं सैन्धवोऽगमत् ॥२१॥
21. kathaṁ tvayi ca karṇe ca kṛpe śalye ca jīvati ,
aśvatthāmni ca kauravya nidhanaṁ saindhavo'gamat.
21. katham tvayi ca karṇe ca kṛpe śalye ca jīvati
aśvatthāmni ca kauravya nidhanam saindhavaḥ agamat
21. kauravya tvayi ca karṇe ca kṛpe śalye ca aśvatthāmni
ca jīvati saindhavaḥ katham nidhanam agamat
21. O descendant of Kuru (Kauravya), how did the King of Sindhu (Saindhava) meet his end while you, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Śalya, and Aśvatthāmā were all still alive?
यद्वस्तत्सर्वराजानस्तेजस्तिग्ममुपासते ।
सिन्धुराजं परित्रातुं स वो मध्ये कथं हतः ॥२२॥
22. yadvastatsarvarājānastejastigmamupāsate ,
sindhurājaṁ paritrātuṁ sa vo madhye kathaṁ hataḥ.
22. yat vaḥ tat sarvarājānaḥ tejaḥ tigmam upāsate
sindhurājam paritrātum saḥ vaḥ madhye katham hataḥ
22. yat vaḥ tigmam tejaḥ tat sarvarājānaḥ upāsate
sindhurājam paritrātum saḥ vaḥ madhye katham hataḥ
22. That fierce power (tejas) of yours, which all kings revere, and which was meant to protect the King of Sindhu (Sindhurāja) - how was he killed right in your midst?
मय्येव हि विशेषेण तथा दुर्योधन त्वयि ।
आशंसत परित्राणमर्जुनात्स महीपतिः ॥२३॥
23. mayyeva hi viśeṣeṇa tathā duryodhana tvayi ,
āśaṁsata paritrāṇamarjunātsa mahīpatiḥ.
23. mayi eva hi viśeṣeṇa tathā duryodhana tvayi
āśaṃsata paritrāṇam arjunāt saḥ mahīpatiḥ
23. duryodhana saḥ mahīpatiḥ hi viśeṣeṇa mayi
eva tathā tvayi arjunāt paritrāṇam āśaṃsata
23. O Duryodhana, that king (Jayadratha), indeed, hoped for protection from Arjuna especially in me and also in you.
ततस्तस्मिन्परित्राणमलब्धवति फल्गुनात् ।
न किंचिदनुपश्यामि जीवितत्राणमात्मनः ॥२४॥
24. tatastasminparitrāṇamalabdhavati phalgunāt ,
na kiṁcidanupaśyāmi jīvitatrāṇamātmanaḥ.
24. tatas tasmin paritrāṇam alabdhavati phalgunāt
na kiṃcit anupaśyāmi jīvitatrāṇam ātmanaḥ
24. tatas tasmin phalgunāt paritrāṇam alabdhavati
(sati) ātmanaḥ jīvitatrāṇam kiṃcit na anupaśyāmi
24. Therefore, when he (Jayadratha) has not obtained protection from Arjuna (Phalguna), I see no means of preserving my own life (ātman).
मज्जन्तमिव चात्मानं धृष्टद्युम्नस्य किल्बिषे ।
पश्याम्यहत्वा पाञ्चालान्सह तेन शिखण्डिना ॥२५॥
25. majjantamiva cātmānaṁ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya kilbiṣe ,
paśyāmyahatvā pāñcālānsaha tena śikhaṇḍinā.
25. majjantham iva ca ātmānam dhṛṣṭadyumnasya kilbiṣe
paśyāmi ahatvā pāñcālān saha tena śikhaṇḍinā
25. ca ahatvā pāñcālān saha tena śikhaṇṇinā (evaṃ)
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya kilbiṣe majjantham iva ātmānam paśyāmi
25. And I see my own self (ātman), as it were, sinking into Dhṛṣṭadyumna's transgression, without having slain the Pañcālas along with that Śikhaṇḍin.
तन्मा किमभितप्यन्तं वाक्शरैरभिकृन्तसि ।
अशक्तः सिन्धुराजस्य भूत्वा त्राणाय भारत ॥२६॥
26. tanmā kimabhitapyantaṁ vākśarairabhikṛntasi ,
aśaktaḥ sindhurājasya bhūtvā trāṇāya bhārata.
26. tat mā kim abhitapyantam vākśaraiḥ abhikṛntasi
aśaktaḥ sindhurājasya bhūtvā trāṇāya bhārata
26. bhārata tat kim sindhurājasya trāṇāya aśaktaḥ
bhūtvā abhitapyantam mā vākśaraiḥ abhikṛntasi
26. Therefore, O Bhārata, why do you torment me, who am already distressed, with your verbal arrows, after I have become powerless to offer protection to the King of Sindhu?
सौवर्णं सत्यसंधस्य ध्वजमक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
अपश्यन्युधि भीष्मस्य कथमाशंससे जयम् ॥२७॥
27. sauvarṇaṁ satyasaṁdhasya dhvajamakliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
apaśyanyudhi bhīṣmasya kathamāśaṁsase jayam.
27. sauvarṇam satyasaṃdhasya dhvajam akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ
apaśyan yudhi bhīṣmasya katham āśaṃsase jayam
27. yudhi satyasaṃdhasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ bhīṣmasya
sauvarṇam dhvajam apaśyan katham jayam āśaṃsase
27. How can you hope for victory, when you do not see in battle the golden banner of Bhishma, whose vows are true and whose deeds are untiring?
मध्ये महारथानां च यत्राहन्यत सैन्धवः ।
हतो भूरिश्रवाश्चैव किं शेषं तत्र मन्यसे ॥२८॥
28. madhye mahārathānāṁ ca yatrāhanyata saindhavaḥ ,
hato bhūriśravāścaiva kiṁ śeṣaṁ tatra manyase.
28. madhye mahārathānām ca yatra ahanyata saindhavaḥ
hataḥ bhūriśravāḥ ca eva kim śeṣam tatra manyase
28. yatra mahārathānām madhye saindhavaḥ ca ahanyata,
bhūriśravāḥ ca eva hataḥ,
tatra kim śeṣam manyase.
28. Where Saindhava was killed amidst the great charioteers (mahārathas), and Bhuriśravas was also slain, what do you think remains there?
कृप एव च दुर्धर्षो यदि जीवति पार्थिव ।
यो नागात्सिन्धुराजस्य वर्त्म तं पूजयाम्यहम् ॥२९॥
29. kṛpa eva ca durdharṣo yadi jīvati pārthiva ,
yo nāgātsindhurājasya vartma taṁ pūjayāmyaham.
29. kṛpaḥ eva ca durdharṣaḥ yadi jīvati pārthiva yaḥ
na agāt sindhurājasya vartma tam pūjayāmi aham
29. pārthiva,
yadi durdharṣaḥ kṛpaḥ eva ca jīvati,
yaḥ sindhurājasya vartma na agāt,
tam aham pūjayāmi.
29. And, O King (pārthiva), if the formidable Kripa alone survives, then I would honor him who did not follow the path of the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha).
यच्चापश्यं हतं भीष्मं पश्यतस्तेऽनुजस्य वै ।
दुःशासनस्य कौरव्य कुर्वाणं कर्म दुष्करम् ।
अवध्यकल्पं संग्रामे देवैरपि सवासवैः ॥३०॥
30. yaccāpaśyaṁ hataṁ bhīṣmaṁ paśyataste'nujasya vai ,
duḥśāsanasya kauravya kurvāṇaṁ karma duṣkaram ,
avadhyakalpaṁ saṁgrāme devairapi savāsavaiḥ.
30. yat ca apaśyam hatam bhīṣmam paśyataḥ
te anujasya vai duḥśāsanasya kauravya
kurvāṇam karma duṣkaram avadhyakalpam
saṅgrāme devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ
30. kauravya,
yat ca te anujasya duḥśāsanasya vai paśyataḥ,
hatam bhīṣmam apaśyam; duṣkaram karma kurvāṇam,
devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ saṅgrāme avadhyakalpam.
30. And, O descendant of Kuru (kauravya), I saw Bhishma killed, even as your younger brother Duḥśāsana watched. Bhishma was performing an arduous feat (karma duṣkaram), virtually impossible to slay (avadhyakalpam) in battle (saṅgrāma), even for the gods (devas) with Indra.
न ते वसुंधरास्तीति तदहं चिन्तये नृप ।
इमानि पाण्डवानां च सृञ्जयानां च भारत ।
अनीकान्याद्रवन्ते मां सहितान्यद्य मारिष ॥३१॥
31. na te vasuṁdharāstīti tadahaṁ cintaye nṛpa ,
imāni pāṇḍavānāṁ ca sṛñjayānāṁ ca bhārata ,
anīkānyādravante māṁ sahitānyadya māriṣa.
31. na te vasundharā asti iti tat aham
cintaye nṛpa imāni pāṇḍavānām ca
sṛñjayānām ca bhārata anīkāni
ādravante mām sahitāni adya māriṣa
31. nṛpa,
bhārata,
māriṣa,
te vasundharā na asti iti tat aham cintaye.
imāni pāṇḍavānām ca sṛñjayānām ca sahitāni anīkāni adya mām ādravante.
31. O King (nṛpa), O scion of Bharata (bhārata), O respected one (māriṣa), I believe that no land remains for you. For these united armies of the Pandavas and the Srinjayas are rushing towards me today.
नाहत्वा सर्वपाञ्चालान्कवचस्य विमोक्षणम् ।
कर्तास्मि समरे कर्म धार्तराष्ट्र हितं तव ॥३२॥
32. nāhatvā sarvapāñcālānkavacasya vimokṣaṇam ,
kartāsmi samare karma dhārtarāṣṭra hitaṁ tava.
32. na ahatvā sarva-pāñcālān kavacasya vimokṣaṇam
kartā asmi samare karma dhārtarāṣṭra hitam tava
32. dhārtarāṣṭra sarva-pāñcālān ahatvā kavacasya
vimokṣaṇam na kartā asmi samare tava hitam karma
32. O son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, I will not remove my armor until I have slain all the Pāñcālas. I shall accomplish this beneficial deed for you in battle.
राजन्ब्रूयाः सुतं मे त्वमश्वत्थामानमाहवे ।
न सोमकाः प्रमोक्तव्या जीवितं परिरक्षता ॥३३॥
33. rājanbrūyāḥ sutaṁ me tvamaśvatthāmānamāhave ,
na somakāḥ pramoktavyā jīvitaṁ parirakṣatā.
33. rājan brūyāḥ sutam me tvam aśvatthāmānam āhave
na somakāḥ pramoktavyāḥ jīvitam parirakṣatā
33. rājan tvam me sutam aśvatthāmānam āhave brūyāḥ
jīvitam parirakṣatā somakāḥ na pramoktavyāḥ
33. O King, you should tell my son Aśvatthāmā in battle: 'The Somakas are not to be released by anyone who wishes to preserve their life.'
यच्च पित्रानुशिष्टोऽसि तद्वचः परिपालय ।
आनृशंस्ये दमे सत्ये आर्जवे च स्थिरो भव ॥३४॥
34. yacca pitrānuśiṣṭo'si tadvacaḥ paripālaya ,
ānṛśaṁsye dame satye ārjave ca sthiro bhava.
34. yat ca pitrā anuśiṣṭaḥ asi tat vacaḥ paripālaya
ānṛśaṃsye dame satye ārjave ca sthiraḥ bhava
34. yat ca pitrā anuśiṣṭaḥ asi tat vacaḥ paripālaya
ānṛśaṃsye dame satye ārjave ca sthiraḥ bhava
34. And that instruction which you have received from your father, observe that command. Be firm in benevolence, self-restraint, truth, and straightforwardness.
धर्मार्थकामकुशलो धर्मार्थावप्यपीडयन् ।
धर्मप्रधानः कार्याणि कुर्याश्चेति पुनः पुनः ॥३५॥
35. dharmārthakāmakuśalo dharmārthāvapyapīḍayan ,
dharmapradhānaḥ kāryāṇi kuryāśceti punaḥ punaḥ.
35. dharma-artha-kāma-kuśalaḥ dharma-arthau api apīḍayan
dharma-pradhānaḥ kāryāṇi kuryāt ca iti punaḥ punaḥ
35. dharma-artha-kāma-kuśalaḥ dharma-arthau api apīḍayan
dharma-pradhānaḥ kāryāṇi punaḥ punaḥ kuryāt ca iti
35. One who is skilled in natural law (dharma), prosperity, and desire, without violating natural law (dharma) or prosperity, and for whom natural law (dharma) is the primary concern, should repeatedly perform (their) duties.
चक्षुर्मनोभ्यां संतोष्या विप्राः सेव्याश्च शक्तितः ।
न चैषां विप्रियं कार्यं ते हि वह्निशिखोपमाः ॥३६॥
36. cakṣurmanobhyāṁ saṁtoṣyā viprāḥ sevyāśca śaktitaḥ ,
na caiṣāṁ vipriyaṁ kāryaṁ te hi vahniśikhopamāḥ.
36. cakṣusmanobhyām santoṣyāḥ viprāḥ sevyāḥ ca śaktitaḥ
na ca eṣām vipriyam kāryam te hi vahniśikhopamāḥ
36. viprāḥ cakṣusmanobhyām santoṣyāḥ ca śaktitaḥ sevyāḥ
ca eṣām vipriyam na kāryam hi te vahniśikhopamāḥ
36. Brahmins should be pleased by one's respectful gaze and attitude (lit. 'eyes and mind'), and they should be served to the best of one's capacity. No harm or offense should be done to them, for they are indeed like flames of fire.
एष त्वहमनीकानि प्रविशाम्यरिसूदन ।
रणाय महते राजंस्त्वया वाक्शल्यपीडितः ॥३७॥
37. eṣa tvahamanīkāni praviśāmyarisūdana ,
raṇāya mahate rājaṁstvayā vākśalyapīḍitaḥ.
37. eṣaḥ tu aham anīkāni praviśāmi arīsūdana
raṇāya mahate rājan tvayā vācśalyapīḍitaḥ

37. O destroyer of foes (arīsūdana), O King (rājan), indeed, I, tormented by your verbal taunts, now enter the great armies for battle.
त्वं च दुर्योधन बलं यदि शक्नोषि धारय ।
रात्रावपि हि योत्स्यन्ते संरब्धाः कुरुसृञ्जयाः ॥३८॥
38. tvaṁ ca duryodhana balaṁ yadi śaknoṣi dhāraya ,
rātrāvapi hi yotsyante saṁrabdhāḥ kurusṛñjayāḥ.
38. tvam ca duryodhana balam yadi śaknoṣi dhāraya
rātrau api hi yotsyante saṃrabdhāḥ kurusṛñjayāḥ
38. ca duryodhana tvam yadi śaknoṣi balam dhāraya
hi saṃrabdhāḥ kurusṛñjayāḥ rātrau api yotsyante
38. And you, Duryodhana, if you can, hold your army. For indeed, the enraged Kurus and Sṛñjayas will fight even during the night.
एवमुक्त्वा ततः प्रायाद्द्रोणः पाण्डवसृञ्जयान् ।
मुष्णन्क्षत्रियतेजांसि नक्षत्राणामिवांशुमान् ॥३९॥
39. evamuktvā tataḥ prāyāddroṇaḥ pāṇḍavasṛñjayān ,
muṣṇankṣatriyatejāṁsi nakṣatrāṇāmivāṁśumān.
39. evam uktvā tataḥ prāyāt droṇaḥ pāṇḍavasṛñjayān
muṣṇan kṣatriyatejāṃsi nakṣatrāṇām iva aṃśumān
39. evam uktvā tataḥ droṇaḥ pāṇḍavasṛñjayān prāyāt
kṣatriyatejāṃsi muṣṇan iva nakṣatrāṇām aṃśumān
39. Having spoken thus, Droṇa then proceeded towards the Pāṇḍavas and Sṛñjayas, diminishing the valor of the kṣatriyas, just as the sun (aṃśumān) outshines the stars (nakṣatras).
