जनमेजय उवाच ।
दृष्ट्वा पुत्रांस्तथा पौत्रान्सानुबन्धाञ्जनाधिपः ।
धृतराष्ट्रः किमकरोद्राजा चैव युधिष्ठिरः ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
dṛṣṭvā putrāṁstathā pautrānsānubandhāñjanādhipaḥ ,

1. Janamejaya said: Having seen his sons and grandsons, accompanied by their relatives, what did King Dhṛtarāṣṭra do? And what did King Yudhiṣṭhira do?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तद्दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं पुत्राणां दर्शनं पुनः ।
वीतशोकः स राजर्षिः पुनराश्रममागमत् ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
taddṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṁ putrāṇāṁ darśanaṁ punaḥ ,
vītaśokaḥ sa rājarṣiḥ punarāśramamāgamat.

2. Vaiśampāyana said: Having seen that great wonder – the sight of his sons once again – that royal sage became free from sorrow and returned to his hermitage (āśrama).
इतरस्तु जनः सर्वस्ते चैव परमर्षयः ।
प्रतिजग्मुर्यथाकामं धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञया ॥३॥
3. itarastu janaḥ sarvaste caiva paramarṣayaḥ ,
pratijagmuryathākāmaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñayā.
3. itaraḥ tu janaḥ sarve te ca eva parama-ṛṣayaḥ
prati-jagmuḥ yathā-kāmam dhṛtarāṣṭra-abhyanujñayā

3. But all the other people, and those great sages (paramarṣis), departed as they wished, with Dhṛtarāṣṭra's permission.
पाण्डवास्तु महात्मानो लघुभूयिष्ठसैनिकाः ।
अनुजग्मुर्महात्मानं सदारं तं महीपतिम् ॥४॥
4. pāṇḍavāstu mahātmāno laghubhūyiṣṭhasainikāḥ ,
anujagmurmahātmānaṁ sadāraṁ taṁ mahīpatim.
4. pāṇḍavāḥ tu mahā-ātmānaḥ laghu-bhūyiṣṭha-sainikāḥ
anu-jagmuḥ mahā-ātmānam sa-dāram tam mahī-patim

tam sa-dāram mahā-ātmānam mahī-patim anu-jagmuḥ
4. However, the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, whose army was predominantly small, followed that noble king (mahātman), who was with his wife.
तमाश्रमगतं धीमान्ब्रह्मर्षिर्लोकपूजितः ।
मुनिः सत्यवतीपुत्रो धृतराष्ट्रमभाषत ॥५॥
5. tamāśramagataṁ dhīmānbrahmarṣirlokapūjitaḥ ,
muniḥ satyavatīputro dhṛtarāṣṭramabhāṣata.

muniḥ satyavatīputraḥ dhṛtarāṣṭram abhāṣata

5. The intelligent brahmin sage (muni), revered by the people and the son of Satyavatī, spoke to Dhritarashtra who had arrived at his hermitage.
धृतराष्ट्र महाबाहो शृणु कौरवनन्दन ।
श्रुतं ते ज्ञानवृद्धानामृषीणां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥६॥
6. dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho śṛṇu kauravanandana ,
śrutaṁ te jñānavṛddhānāmṛṣīṇāṁ puṇyakarmaṇām.
6. dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho śṛṇu kauravanandana
śrutam te jñānavṛddhānām ṛṣīṇām puṇyakarmaṇām
6. dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho kauravanandana śṛṇu te

6. O Dhritarashtra, O mighty-armed one, O delight of the Kurus, listen! You have heard from the sages, those mature in knowledge and of meritorious deeds.
ऋद्धाभिजनवृद्धानां वेदवेदाङ्गवेदिनाम् ।
धर्मज्ञानां पुराणानां वदतां विविधाः कथाः ॥७॥
7. ṛddhābhijanavṛddhānāṁ vedavedāṅgavedinām ,
dharmajñānāṁ purāṇānāṁ vadatāṁ vividhāḥ kathāḥ.

dharmajñānām purāṇānām vadatām vividhāḥ kathāḥ
7. ṛddhābhijanavṛddhānām vedavedāṅgavedinām
dharmajñānām purāṇānām vadatām vividhāḥ kathāḥ
7. These sages are of noble and aged lineage, knowers of the Vedas and Vedangas, who understand the natural law (dharma), knowledgeable in ancient lore, and who narrate various stories.
मा स्म शोके मनः कार्षीर्दिष्टे न व्यथते बुधः ।
श्रुतं देवरहस्यं ते नारदाद्देवदर्शनात् ॥८॥
8. mā sma śoke manaḥ kārṣīrdiṣṭe na vyathate budhaḥ ,
śrutaṁ devarahasyaṁ te nāradāddevadarśanāt.
8. mā sma śoke manaḥ kārṣīḥ diṣṭe na vyathate budhaḥ
śrutam devarahasyam te nāradāt devadarśanāt
8. mā sma manaḥ śoke kārṣīḥ budhaḥ diṣṭe na vyathate
te devarahasyam nāradāt devadarśanāt śrutam
8. Do not set your mind to sorrow, for a wise person is not troubled by destiny. You have heard the divine secret from Narada, who is a seer of gods.
गतास्ते क्षत्रधर्मेण शस्त्रपूतां गतिं शुभाम् ।
यथा दृष्टास्त्वया पुत्रा यथाकामविहारिणः ॥९॥
9. gatāste kṣatradharmeṇa śastrapūtāṁ gatiṁ śubhām ,
yathā dṛṣṭāstvayā putrā yathākāmavihāriṇaḥ.
9. gatāḥ te kṣatradharmeṇa śastrapūtām gatim śubhām
| yathā dṛṣṭāḥ tvayā putrāḥ yathākāmavihāriṇaḥ
9. They have attained an auspicious state, purified by weapons, in accordance with the warrior's intrinsic nature (kṣatradharma), just as your sons were seen moving about freely as they pleased.
युधिष्ठिरस्त्वयं धीमान्भवन्तमनुरुध्यते ।
सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैः सदारः ससुहृज्जनः ॥१०॥
10. yudhiṣṭhirastvayaṁ dhīmānbhavantamanurudhyate ,
sahito bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvaiḥ sadāraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ.
10. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu ayam dhīmān bhavantam anurudhyate
| sahitaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvaiḥ sadāraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ
10. But this intelligent Yudhishthira, accompanied by all his brothers, his wife, and friends, is dependent on you.
विसर्जयैनं यात्वेष स्वराज्यमनुशासताम् ।
मासः समधिको ह्येषामतीतो वसतां वने ॥११॥
11. visarjayainaṁ yātveṣa svarājyamanuśāsatām ,
māsaḥ samadhiko hyeṣāmatīto vasatāṁ vane.
11. visarjaya enam yātu eṣa svarājyam anuśāsatām
| māsaḥ samadhikaḥ hi eṣām atītaḥ vasatām vane
11. Please send him away; let him go and govern his own kingdom. Indeed, more than a month has passed for them while dwelling in the forest.
एतद्धि नित्यं यत्नेन पदं रक्ष्यं परंतप ।
बहुप्रत्यर्थिकं ह्येतद्राज्यं नाम नराधिप ॥१२॥
12. etaddhi nityaṁ yatnena padaṁ rakṣyaṁ paraṁtapa ,
bahupratyarthikaṁ hyetadrājyaṁ nāma narādhipa.
12. etad hi nityam yatnena padam rakṣyam parantapa |
bahupratyarthikam hi etat rājyam nāma narādhipa
12. Indeed, this position should always be protected with effort, O tormentor of enemies, for this thing called kingship, O king, has many adversaries.
इत्युक्तः कौरवो राजा व्यासेनामितबुद्धिना ।
युधिष्ठिरमथाहूय वाग्मी वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. ityuktaḥ kauravo rājā vyāsenāmitabuddhinā ,
yudhiṣṭhiramathāhūya vāgmī vacanamabravīt.
13. iti uktaḥ kauravaḥ rājā vyāsena amitabuddhinā
yudhiṣṭhiram atha āhūya vāgmī vacanam abravīt
13. vyāsena amitabuddhinā iti uktaḥ kauravaḥ rājā
atha yudhiṣṭhiram āhūya vāgmī vacanam abravīt
13. Having thus been spoken to by Vyāsa, who possessed immeasurable intellect, the eloquent [Vyāsa] then called Yudhiṣṭhira and spoke these words.
अजातशत्रो भद्रं ते शृणु मे भ्रातृभिः सह ।
त्वत्प्रसादान्महीपाल शोको नास्मान्प्रबाधते ॥१४॥
14. ajātaśatro bhadraṁ te śṛṇu me bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ,
tvatprasādānmahīpāla śoko nāsmānprabādhate.
14. ajātaśatro bhadram te śṛṇu me bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
tvatprasādāt mahīpāla śokaḥ na asmān prabādhate
14. ajātaśatro te bhadram śṛṇu me bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
mahīpāla tvatprasādāt śokaḥ na asmān prabādhate
14. O Yudhiṣṭhira (one without enemies), may it be well with you. Listen to me along with your brothers. O king, by your grace, sorrow does not afflict us.
रमे चाहं त्वया पुत्र पुरेव गजसाह्वये ।
नाथेनानुगतो विद्वन्प्रियेषु परिवर्तिना ॥१५॥
15. rame cāhaṁ tvayā putra pureva gajasāhvaye ,
nāthenānugato vidvanpriyeṣu parivartinā.
15. rame ca aham tvayā putra purā eva gajasāhvaye
nāthena anugataḥ vidvan priyeṣu parivartinā
15. aham ca tvayā putra vidvan nāthena anugataḥ
priyeṣu parivartinā purā eva gajasāhvaye rame
15. I also rejoice with you, O son, as I did before in Hastinapura; O learned one, O you who are accompanied by a protector, [and with you] who dwells among beloved ones.
प्राप्तं पुत्रफलं त्वत्तः प्रीतिर्मे विपुला त्वयि ।
न मे मन्युर्महाबाहो गम्यतां पुत्र मा चिरम् ॥१६॥
16. prāptaṁ putraphalaṁ tvattaḥ prītirme vipulā tvayi ,
na me manyurmahābāho gamyatāṁ putra mā ciram.
16. prāptam putraphalam tvattaḥ prītiḥ me vipulā tvayi
na me manyuḥ mahābāho gamyatām putra mā ciram
16. tvattaḥ putraphalam prāptam me tvayi vipulā prītiḥ
mahābāho me manyuḥ na putra mā ciram gamyatām
16. The fruit of a son has been obtained by me from you; my affection for you is immense. I have no anger, O mighty-armed one. Go, O son, without delay.
भवन्तं चेह संप्रेक्ष्य तपो मे परिहीयते ।
तपोयुक्तं शरीरं च त्वां दृष्ट्वा धारितं पुनः ॥१७॥
17. bhavantaṁ ceha saṁprekṣya tapo me parihīyate ,
tapoyuktaṁ śarīraṁ ca tvāṁ dṛṣṭvā dhāritaṁ punaḥ.
17. bhavantam ca iha samprekṣya tapaḥ me parihīyate
tapoyuktam śarīram ca tvām dṛṣṭvā dhāritam punaḥ
17. iha bhavantam samprekṣya me tapaḥ ca parihīyate
ca tvām dṛṣṭvā tapoyuktam śarīram punaḥ dhāritam
17. Indeed, having fully beheld you here, my ascetic practice (tapas) seems to diminish. Yet, seeing you, my body, dedicated to (tapas), is sustained anew.
मातरौ ते तथैवेमे शीर्णपर्णकृताशने ।
मम तुल्यव्रते पुत्र नचिरं वर्तयिष्यतः ॥१८॥
18. mātarau te tathaiveme śīrṇaparṇakṛtāśane ,
mama tulyavrate putra naciraṁ vartayiṣyataḥ.
18. mātarau te tathā eva ime śīrṇaparṇakṛtāśane
mama tulyavrate putra naciram vartayiṣyataḥ
18. putra,
te ime mātarau,
tathā eva śīrṇaparṇakṛtāśane mama tulyavrate,
naciram vartayiṣyataḥ.
18. These two mothers of yours, who like me sustain themselves by eating dried leaves and observe ascetic vows similar to mine, O son, will not live for much longer.
दुर्योधनप्रभृतयो दृष्टा लोकान्तरं गताः ।
व्यासस्य तपसो वीर्याद्भवतश्च समागमात् ॥१९॥
19. duryodhanaprabhṛtayo dṛṣṭā lokāntaraṁ gatāḥ ,
vyāsasya tapaso vīryādbhavataśca samāgamāt.
19. duryodhanaprabhṛtayaḥ dṛṣṭāḥ lokāntaram gatāḥ
vyāsasya tapasas vīryāt bhavataḥ ca samāgamāt
19. duryodhanaprabhṛtayaḥ lokāntaram gatāḥ dṛṣṭāḥ
vyāsasya tapasas vīryāt ca bhavataḥ samāgamāt
19. Duryodhana and others, who had departed to another realm, were seen through the potency of Vyāsa's spiritual practice (tapas) and by your arrival (samāgama).
प्रयोजनं चिरं वृत्तं जीवितस्य च मेऽनघ ।
उग्रं तपः समास्थास्ये त्वमनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥२०॥
20. prayojanaṁ ciraṁ vṛttaṁ jīvitasya ca me'nagha ,
ugraṁ tapaḥ samāsthāsye tvamanujñātumarhasi.
20. prayojanam ciram vṛttam jīvitasya ca me anagha
ugram tapaḥ samāsthāsye tvam anujñātum arhasi
20. anagha,
me jīvitasya prayojanam ciram ca vṛttam.
ugram tapaḥ samāsthāsye.
tvam anujñātum arhasi.
20. O sinless one (anagha), the long-standing purpose of my life has been fulfilled. I shall now undertake severe asceticism (tapas); you ought to grant me permission.
त्वय्यद्य पिण्डः कीर्तिश्च कुलं चेदं प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
श्वो वाद्य वा महाबाहो गम्यतां पुत्र मा चिरम् ॥२१॥
21. tvayyadya piṇḍaḥ kīrtiśca kulaṁ cedaṁ pratiṣṭhitam ,
śvo vādya vā mahābāho gamyatāṁ putra mā ciram.
21. tvayi adya piṇḍaḥ kīrtiḥ ca kulam ca idam pratiṣṭhitam
| śvaḥ vā adya vā mahābāho gamyatām putra mā ciram
21. O mighty-armed son, today the ancestral oblation (piṇḍa), your renown, and this entire lineage are established in you. Do not delay; you must depart, be it today or tomorrow.
राजनीतिः सुबहुशः श्रुता ते भरतर्षभ ।
संदेष्टव्यं न पश्यामि कृतमेतावता विभो ॥२२॥
22. rājanītiḥ subahuśaḥ śrutā te bharatarṣabha ,
saṁdeṣṭavyaṁ na paśyāmi kṛtametāvatā vibho.
22. rājanītiḥ subahuśaḥ śrutā te bharatarṣabha |
sandeṣṭavyam na paśyāmi kṛtam etāvatā vibho
22. O best of Bharatas, you have heard extensively about statecraft (rājanīti). O powerful one, I see nothing further that needs to be instructed, for enough has been accomplished with this (knowledge).
इत्युक्तवचनं तात नृपो राजानमब्रवीत् ।
न मामर्हसि धर्मज्ञ परित्यक्तुमनागसम् ॥२३॥
23. ityuktavacanaṁ tāta nṛpo rājānamabravīt ,
na māmarhasi dharmajña parityaktumanāgasam.
23. iti uktavacanam tāta nṛpaḥ rājānam abravīt |
na mām arhasi dharmajña parityaktum anāgasam
23. O dear one, after these words were spoken, the king spoke to the (other) king: 'O knower of natural law (dharma), you ought not to abandon me, who am innocent.'
कामं गच्छन्तु मे सर्वे भ्रातरोऽनुचरास्तथा ।
भवन्तमहमन्विष्ये मातरौ च यतव्रते ॥२४॥
24. kāmaṁ gacchantu me sarve bhrātaro'nucarāstathā ,
bhavantamahamanviṣye mātarau ca yatavrate.
24. kāmam gacchantu me sarve bhrātaraḥ anucarāḥ tathā
| bhavantam aham anviṣye mātarau ca yatavrate
24. Let all my brothers and followers certainly go. But I will follow you and the two mothers, O you two who are of firm vows.
तमुवाचाथ गान्धारी मैवं पुत्र शृणुष्व मे ।
त्वय्यधीनं कुरुकुलं पिण्डश्च श्वशुरस्य मे ॥२५॥
25. tamuvācātha gāndhārī maivaṁ putra śṛṇuṣva me ,
tvayyadhīnaṁ kurukulaṁ piṇḍaśca śvaśurasya me.
25. tam uvāca atha gāndhārī mā evam putra śṛṇuṣva me
tvayi adhīnam kurukulam piṇḍaḥ ca śvaśurasya me
25. atha gāndhārī tam uvāca,
"putra,
mā evam śṛṇuṣva me.
kurukulam ca me śvaśurasya piṇḍaḥ tvayi adhīnam.
"
25. Then Gandhari said to him, "My son, do not act thus; listen to me. The Kuru lineage and the ancestral offerings (piṇḍa) to my father-in-law depend on you."
गम्यतां पुत्र पर्याप्तमेतावत्पूजिता वयम् ।
राजा यदाह तत्कार्यं त्वया पुत्र पितुर्वचः ॥२६॥
26. gamyatāṁ putra paryāptametāvatpūjitā vayam ,
rājā yadāha tatkāryaṁ tvayā putra piturvacaḥ.
26. gamyatām putra paryāptam etāvat pūjitā vayam
rājā yat āha tat kāryam tvayā putra pituḥ vacaḥ
26. putra,
gamyatām.
etāvat paryāptam; vayam pūjitāḥ.
putra,
rājā yat āha,
tat pituḥ vacaḥ tvayā kāryam.
26. "Go, my son. This much is enough; we have been sufficiently honored. Whatever the king has said, that command of your father must be carried out by you, my son."
इत्युक्तः स तु गान्धार्या कुन्तीमिदमुवाच ह ।
स्नेहबाष्पाकुले नेत्रे प्रमृज्य रुदतीं वचः ॥२७॥
27. ityuktaḥ sa tu gāndhāryā kuntīmidamuvāca ha ,
snehabāṣpākule netre pramṛjya rudatīṁ vacaḥ.
27. iti uktaḥ saḥ tu gāndhārī kuntīm idam uvāca ha
sneha bāṣpa ākule netre pramṛjya rudatīm vacaḥ
27. gāndhārī iti uktaḥ saḥ tu,
sneha bāṣpa ākule rudatīm netre pramṛjya,
kuntīm idam vacaḥ ha uvāca.
27. Having been addressed thus by Gandhari, he (Duryodhana) then said these words to Kunti, after wiping her weeping eyes that were filled with tears of affection.
विसर्जयति मां राजा गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ।
भवत्यां बद्धचित्तस्तु कथं यास्यामि दुःखितः ॥२८॥
28. visarjayati māṁ rājā gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī ,
bhavatyāṁ baddhacittastu kathaṁ yāsyāmi duḥkhitaḥ.
28. visarjati mām rājā gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī
bhavatyām baddhacittaḥ tu katham yāsyāmi duḥkhitaḥ
28. rājā ca yaśasvinī gāndhārī mām visarjati.
tu,
bhavatyām baddhacittaḥ (aham),
duḥkhitaḥ katham yāsyāmi?
28. The king and the glorious Gandhari are dismissing me. But with my mind fixed on you, how can I leave, being so distressed?
न चोत्सहे तपोविघ्नं कर्तुं ते धर्मचारिणि ।
तपसो हि परं नास्ति तपसा विन्दते महत् ॥२९॥
29. na cotsahe tapovighnaṁ kartuṁ te dharmacāriṇi ,
tapaso hi paraṁ nāsti tapasā vindate mahat.
29. na ca utsahe tapas-vighnam kartum te dharma-cāriṇi
tapasaha hi param na asti tapasā vindate mahat
29. And I am unable to cause an obstruction to your ascetic practice (tapas), O righteous one. Indeed, there is nothing superior to asceticism (tapas); by means of ascetic practice (tapas), one attains greatness.
ममापि न तथा राज्ञि राज्ये बुद्धिर्यथा पुरा ।
तपस्येवानुरक्तं मे मनः सर्वात्मना तथा ॥३०॥
30. mamāpi na tathā rājñi rājye buddhiryathā purā ,
tapasyevānuraktaṁ me manaḥ sarvātmanā tathā.
30. mama api na tathā rājñi rājye buddhiḥ yathā purā
tapasi eva anuraktam me manaḥ sarva-ātmanā tathā
30. And O queen, my mind is no longer attached to the kingdom as it was before. My mind is now entirely (sarva-ātmanā) devoted to ascetic practice (tapas).
शून्येयं च मही सर्वा न मे प्रीतिकरी शुभे ।
बान्धवा नः परिक्षीणा बलं नो न यथा पुरा ॥३१॥
31. śūnyeyaṁ ca mahī sarvā na me prītikarī śubhe ,
bāndhavā naḥ parikṣīṇā balaṁ no na yathā purā.
31. śūnyā iyam ca mahī sarvā na me prīti-karī śubhe
bāndhavā naḥ pari-kṣīṇā balam naḥ na yathā purā
31. O auspicious one, this entire earth is desolate and brings me no joy. Our relatives are completely diminished, and our strength is not as it was before.
पाञ्चालाः सुभृशं क्षीणाः कन्यामात्रावशेषिताः ।
न तेषां कुलकर्तारं कंचित्पश्याम्यहं शुभे ॥३२॥
32. pāñcālāḥ subhṛśaṁ kṣīṇāḥ kanyāmātrāvaśeṣitāḥ ,
na teṣāṁ kulakartāraṁ kaṁcitpaśyāmyahaṁ śubhe.
32. pāñcālāḥ su-bhṛśam kṣīṇāḥ kanyā-mātra-avaśeṣitāḥ
na teṣām kula-kartāram kaṃcit paśyāmi aham śubhe
32. The Pañcālas are greatly diminished, with only daughters remaining. I do not see anyone among them who could perpetuate their family, O auspicious one.
सर्वे हि भस्मसान्नीता द्रोणेनैकेन संयुगे ।
अवशेषास्तु निहता द्रोणपुत्रेण वै निशि ॥३३॥
33. sarve hi bhasmasānnītā droṇenaikena saṁyuge ,
avaśeṣāstu nihatā droṇaputreṇa vai niśi.

avaśeṣāḥ tu nihatāḥ droṇaputreṇa vai niśi

33. Indeed, all were turned to ashes by Droṇa alone in battle. The remaining, however, were slain by Droṇa's son during the night.
चेदयश्चैव मत्स्याश्च दृष्टपूर्वास्तथैव नः ।
केवलं वृष्णिचक्रं तु वासुदेवपरिग्रहात् ।
यं दृष्ट्वा स्थातुमिच्छामि धर्मार्थं नान्यहेतुकम् ॥३४॥
34. cedayaścaiva matsyāśca dṛṣṭapūrvāstathaiva naḥ ,
kevalaṁ vṛṣṇicakraṁ tu vāsudevaparigrahāt ,
yaṁ dṛṣṭvā sthātumicchāmi dharmārthaṁ nānyahetukam.
34. cedayāḥ ca eva matsyāḥ ca dṛṣṭapūrvāḥ
tathā eva naḥ kevalam vṛṣṇicakram
tu vāsudevaparigrahāt yam dṛṣṭvā
sthātum icchāmi dharmārtham na anyahetukam

34. The Cedis and Matsyas, we have certainly seen them before. But only the Vṛṣṇi host, owing to Vāsudeva's protection, seeing whom I desire to stand for the sake of natural law (dharma) and for no other reason.
शिवेन पश्य नः सर्वान्दुर्लभं दर्शनं तव ।
भविष्यत्यम्ब राजा हि तीव्रमारप्स्यते तपः ॥३५॥
35. śivena paśya naḥ sarvāndurlabhaṁ darśanaṁ tava ,
bhaviṣyatyamba rājā hi tīvramārapsyate tapaḥ.

bhaviṣyati amba rājā hi tīvram ārap_syate tapaḥ

35. O mother, behold all of us favorably; your sight is indeed difficult to obtain. The king, indeed, will undertake severe austerity (tapas).
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाबाहुः सहदेवो युधां पतिः ।
युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः ॥३६॥
36. etacchrutvā mahābāhuḥ sahadevo yudhāṁ patiḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiramuvācedaṁ bāṣpavyākulalocanaḥ.
36. etat śrutvā mahābāhuḥ sahadevaḥ yudhām patiḥ
yudhiṣṭhiram uvāca idam bāṣpavyākulalocanaḥ

36. Having heard this, Sahadeva, the mighty-armed lord of battles, his eyes agitated with tears, spoke these words to Yudhiṣṭhira.
नोत्सहेऽहं परित्यक्तुं मातरं पार्थिवर्षभ ।
प्रतियातु भवान्क्षिप्रं तपस्तप्स्याम्यहं वने ॥३७॥
37. notsahe'haṁ parityaktuṁ mātaraṁ pārthivarṣabha ,
pratiyātu bhavānkṣipraṁ tapastapsyāmyahaṁ vane.
37. na utsahe aham parityaktum mātaram pārthivarṣabha
pratiyātu bhavān kṣipram tapaḥ tapsyāmi aham vane
37. pārthivarṣabha aham mātaram parityaktum na utsahe
bhavān kṣipram pratiyātu aham vane tapaḥ tapsyāmi
37. O best among kings, I cannot bear to abandon my mother. May you return quickly; I shall perform ascetic practices (tapas) in the forest.
इहैव शोषयिष्यामि तपसाहं कलेवरम् ।
पादशुश्रूषणे युक्तो राज्ञो मात्रोस्तथानयोः ॥३८॥
38. ihaiva śoṣayiṣyāmi tapasāhaṁ kalevaram ,
pādaśuśrūṣaṇe yukto rājño mātrostathānayoḥ.
38. iha eva śoṣayiṣyāmi tapasā aham kalevaram
pādaśuśrūṣaṇe yuktaḥ rājñaḥ mātroḥ tathā anayoḥ
38. aham iha eva tapasā kalevaram śoṣayiṣyāmi rājñaḥ
tathā anayoḥ mātroḥ pādaśuśrūṣaṇe yuktaḥ (aham)
38. Right here, I shall waste away my body through ascetic practices (tapas), devoted to serving the feet of the king and these two mothers.
तमुवाच ततः कुन्ती परिष्वज्य महाभुजम् ।
गम्यतां पुत्र मैवं त्वं वोचः कुरु वचो मम ॥३९॥
39. tamuvāca tataḥ kuntī pariṣvajya mahābhujam ,
gamyatāṁ putra maivaṁ tvaṁ vocaḥ kuru vaco mama.

gamyatām putra mā evam tvam vocaḥ kuru vacaḥ mama

39. Kunti then, embracing the mighty-armed one, said to him: 'Go, my son! Do not speak like that. Obey my command.'
आगमा वः शिवाः सन्तु स्वस्था भवत पुत्रकाः ।
उपरोधो भवेदेवमस्माकं तपसः कृते ॥४०॥
40. āgamā vaḥ śivāḥ santu svasthā bhavata putrakāḥ ,
uparodho bhavedevamasmākaṁ tapasaḥ kṛte.
40. āgamāḥ vaḥ śivāḥ santu svasthāḥ bhavata putrakāḥ
uparodhaḥ bhavet evam asmākam tapasaḥ kṛte

40. May your journeys be auspicious, my sons, be well! For our ascetic practices (tapas), there would be an obstruction in this way.
त्वत्स्नेहपाशबद्धा च हीयेयं तपसः परात् ।
तस्मात्पुत्रक गच्छ त्वं शिष्टमल्पं हि नः प्रभो ॥४१॥
41. tvatsnehapāśabaddhā ca hīyeyaṁ tapasaḥ parāt ,
tasmātputraka gaccha tvaṁ śiṣṭamalpaṁ hi naḥ prabho.
41. tvat-sneha-pāśa-baddhā ca hīyeya aham tapasaḥ parāt
tasmāt putraka gaccha tvam śiṣṭam alpam hi naḥ prabho
41. putraka tvam gaccha tasmāt tvat-sneha-pāśa-baddhā ca
aham parāt tapasaḥ hīyeya hi alpam naḥ śiṣṭam prabho
41. Bound by the fetters of my affection for you, I would be deprived of my great resolve (tapas). Therefore, my dear son, you must go. Indeed, only a little remains for us, O lord.
एवं संस्तम्भितं वाक्यैः कुन्त्या बहुविधैर्मनः ।
सहदेवस्य राजेन्द्र राज्ञश्चैव विशेषतः ॥४२॥
42. evaṁ saṁstambhitaṁ vākyaiḥ kuntyā bahuvidhairmanaḥ ,
sahadevasya rājendra rājñaścaiva viśeṣataḥ.
42. evam saṃstambhitam vākyaiḥ kuntyā bahuvidhaiḥ
manaḥ sahadevasya rājendra rājñaḥ ca eva viśeṣataḥ
42. rājendra evam kuntyā bahuvidhaiḥ vākyaiḥ sahadevasya
manaḥ ca rājñaḥ eva viśeṣataḥ saṃstambhitam
42. Thus, O king of kings, the mind of Sahadeva, and especially that of the king (Yudhishthira), was comforted by Kunti's diverse words.
ते मात्रा समनुज्ञाता राज्ञा च कुरुपुंगवाः ।
अभिवाद्य कुरुश्रेष्ठमामन्त्रयितुमारभन् ॥४३॥
43. te mātrā samanujñātā rājñā ca kurupuṁgavāḥ ,
abhivādya kuruśreṣṭhamāmantrayitumārabhan.
43. te mātrā samanujñātāḥ rājñā ca kurupuṃgavāḥ
abhivādya kuruśreṣṭham āmantrayitum ārabhan

43. Having been permitted by their mother and by the king (Yudhishthira), those bulls among the Kurus (Pandavas) bowed down to the best of the Kurus (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) and began to bid farewell.
राजन्प्रतिगमिष्यामः शिवेन प्रतिनन्दिताः ।
अनुज्ञातास्त्वया राजन्गमिष्यामो विकल्मषाः ॥४४॥
44. rājanpratigamiṣyāmaḥ śivena pratinanditāḥ ,
anujñātāstvayā rājangamiṣyāmo vikalmaṣāḥ.
44. rājan pratigamiṣyāmaḥ śivena pratinanditāḥ
anujñātāḥ tvayā rājan gamiṣyāmaḥ vikalmaṣāḥ

44. O king, we shall return with good fortune, having been welcomed. O king, having been permitted by you, we shall go free from all faults.
एवमुक्तः स राजर्षिर्धर्मराज्ञा महात्मना ।
अनुजज्ञे जयाशीर्भिरभिनन्द्य युधिष्ठिरम् ॥४५॥
45. evamuktaḥ sa rājarṣirdharmarājñā mahātmanā ,
anujajñe jayāśīrbhirabhinandya yudhiṣṭhiram.
45. evaṃ uktaḥ saḥ rājarṣiḥ dharmarājñā mahātmanā |
anujajñe jaya-āśīrbhiḥ abhinandya yudhiṣṭhiram
45. evaṃ mahātmanā dharmarājñā uktaḥ saḥ rājarṣiḥ
yudhiṣṭhiram abhinandya jaya-āśīrbhiḥ anujajñe
45. Thus addressed by the great-souled king of righteousness (dharma) Yudhiṣṭhira, that royal sage gave his assent, congratulating Yudhiṣṭhira with blessings for victory.
भीमं च बलिनां श्रेष्ठं सान्त्वयामास पार्थिवः ।
स चास्य सम्यङ्मेधावी प्रत्यपद्यत वीर्यवान् ॥४६॥
46. bhīmaṁ ca balināṁ śreṣṭhaṁ sāntvayāmāsa pārthivaḥ ,
sa cāsya samyaṅmedhāvī pratyapadyata vīryavān.
46. bhīmaṃ ca balināṃ śreṣṭhaṃ sāntvayām āsa pārthivaḥ
| saḥ ca asya samyaṅ medhāvī pratyapadyata vīryavān

46. And the king consoled Bhīma, the foremost among the strong. And that valorous and rightly discerning (Bhīma) responded to him.
अर्जुनं च समाश्लिष्य यमौ च पुरुषर्षभौ ।
अनुजज्ञे स कौरव्यः परिष्वज्याभिनन्द्य च ॥४७॥
47. arjunaṁ ca samāśliṣya yamau ca puruṣarṣabhau ,
anujajñe sa kauravyaḥ pariṣvajyābhinandya ca.
47. arjunaṃ ca samāśliṣya yamau ca puruṣa-ṛṣabhau |
anujajñe saḥ kauravyaḥ pariṣvajya abhinandya ca

47. That Kuru king, having embraced Arjuna and the two foremost men, the twins, gave his assent, having (further) embraced and congratulated them.
गान्धार्या चाभ्यनुज्ञाताः कृतपादाभिवन्दनाः ।
जनन्या समुपाघ्राताः परिष्वक्ताश्च ते नृपम् ।
चक्रुः प्रदक्षिणं सर्वे वत्सा इव निवारणे ॥४८॥
48. gāndhāryā cābhyanujñātāḥ kṛtapādābhivandanāḥ ,
jananyā samupāghrātāḥ pariṣvaktāśca te nṛpam ,
cakruḥ pradakṣiṇaṁ sarve vatsā iva nivāraṇe.
48. gāndharyā ca abhyanujñātāḥ
kṛta-pāda-abhivandanāḥ | jananyā samupāghrātāḥ
pariṣvaktāḥ ca te nṛpam | cakruḥ

vatsāḥ iva nivāraṇe
48. And they, having performed obeisance at Gāndhārī's feet and received her permission, and having been kissed on the head and embraced by the venerable mother, all circumambulated the king like calves at an enclosure (or, at the point of departure).
पुनः पुनर्निरीक्षन्तः प्रजग्मुस्ते प्रदक्षिणम् ।
तथैव द्रौपदी साध्वी सर्वाः कौरवयोषितः ॥४९॥
49. punaḥ punarnirīkṣantaḥ prajagmuste pradakṣiṇam ,
tathaiva draupadī sādhvī sarvāḥ kauravayoṣitaḥ.
49. punaḥ punaḥ nirīkṣantaḥ prajagmuḥ te pradakṣiṇam
tathā eva draupadī sādhvī sarvāḥ kauravayoṣitaḥ
49. te punaḥ punaḥ nirīkṣantaḥ pradakṣiṇam prajagmuḥ
tathā eva sādhvī draupadī sarvāḥ kauravayoṣitaḥ
49. Looking again and again, they circumambulated clockwise. Similarly, the virtuous Draupadi and all the Kuru women did the same.
न्यायतः श्वशुरे वृत्तिं प्रयुज्य प्रययुस्ततः ।
श्वश्रूभ्यां समनुज्ञाताः परिष्वज्याभिनन्दिताः ।
संदिष्टाश्चेतिकर्तव्यं प्रययुर्भर्तृभिः सह ॥५०॥
50. nyāyataḥ śvaśure vṛttiṁ prayujya prayayustataḥ ,
śvaśrūbhyāṁ samanujñātāḥ pariṣvajyābhinanditāḥ ,
saṁdiṣṭāścetikartavyaṁ prayayurbhartṛbhiḥ saha.
50. nyāyataḥ śvaśure vṛttim prayujya
prayayuḥ tataḥ śvaśrūbhyām samanuñātāḥ
pariṣvajya abhinanditāḥ sandiṣṭāḥ ca
itikartavyam prayayuḥ bhartṛbhiḥ saha

50. Having justly performed their duty towards their father-in-law, they then departed. Authorized by their mothers-in-law, having been embraced and blessed, and instructed on what was to be done (itikartavyam), they went with their husbands.
ततः प्रजज्ञे निनदः सूतानां युज्यतामिति ।
उष्ट्राणां क्रोशतां चैव हयानां हेषतामपि ॥५१॥
51. tataḥ prajajñe ninadaḥ sūtānāṁ yujyatāmiti ,
uṣṭrāṇāṁ krośatāṁ caiva hayānāṁ heṣatāmapi.

51. Then arose the cry of the charioteers, saying, 'Let them be yoked!', and also the braying of camels and the neighing of horses.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा सदारः सहसैनिकः ।
नगरं हास्तिनपुरं पुनरायात्सबान्धवः ॥५२॥
52. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā sadāraḥ sahasainikaḥ ,
nagaraṁ hāstinapuraṁ punarāyātsabāndhavaḥ.

nagaram hāstinapuram punaḥ āyāt sabāndhavaḥ

52. Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, accompanied by his wife, his army, and his relatives, returned again to the city of Hastinapura.
