वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्मिन्बहुमृगेऽरण्ये रममाणा महारथाः ।
काम्यके भरतश्रेष्ठा विजह्रुस्ते यथामराः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasminbahumṛge'raṇye ramamāṇā mahārathāḥ ,
kāmyake bharataśreṣṭhā vijahruste yathāmarāḥ.

mahārathāḥ kāmyake bharataśreṣṭhāḥ vijahruḥ te yathā amarāḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: In that Kāmyaka forest, which abounded in many deer, those great chariot-warriors, the best among the Bhāratas, enjoyed themselves as if they were immortals.
प्रेक्षमाणा बहुविधान्वनोद्देशान्समन्ततः ।
यथर्तुकालरम्याश्च वनराजीः सुपुष्पिताः ॥२॥
2. prekṣamāṇā bahuvidhānvanoddeśānsamantataḥ ,
yathartukālaramyāśca vanarājīḥ supuṣpitāḥ.
2. prekṣamāṇāḥ bahuvidhān vanoddeśān samantataḥ
yathartukālaramyāḥ ca vanarājīḥ supuṣpitāḥ
2. They were beholding all around the various parts of the forest, and the profusely blooming rows of trees that were delightful according to the season.
पाण्डवा मृगयाशीलाश्चरन्तस्तन्महावनम् ।
विजह्रुरिन्द्रप्रतिमाः कंचित्कालमरिंदमाः ॥३॥
3. pāṇḍavā mṛgayāśīlāścarantastanmahāvanam ,
vijahrurindrapratimāḥ kaṁcitkālamariṁdamāḥ.
3. pāṇḍavāḥ mṛgayāśīlāḥ carantaḥ tat mahāvanam
vijahruḥ indrapratimāḥ kaṃcit kālam ariṃdamāḥ
3. The Pāṇḍavas, who were fond of hunting, roamed that great forest. These subduers of enemies, resembling Indra, thus enjoyed themselves for some time.
ततस्ते यौगपद्येन ययुः सर्वे चतुर्दिशम् ।
मृगयां पुरुषव्याघ्रा ब्राह्मणार्थे परंतपाः ॥४॥
4. tataste yaugapadyena yayuḥ sarve caturdiśam ,
mṛgayāṁ puruṣavyāghrā brāhmaṇārthe paraṁtapāḥ.
4. tataḥ te yaugapadyena yayuḥ sarve caturdiśam
mṛgayām puruṣavyāghrāḥ brāhmaṇārthe paraṃtapāḥ
4. Then all of them, those tigers among men and tormentors of enemies, went simultaneously in all four directions for hunting, for the sake of the brahmins.
द्रौपदीमाश्रमे न्यस्य तृणबिन्दोरनुज्ञया ।
महर्षेर्दीप्ततपसो धौम्यस्य च पुरोधसः ॥५॥
5. draupadīmāśrame nyasya tṛṇabindoranujñayā ,
maharṣerdīptatapaso dhaumyasya ca purodhasaḥ.
5. draupadīm āśrame nyasya tṛṇabindoḥ anujñayā
maharṣeḥ dīptatapasyaḥ dhaumyasya ca purodhasaḥ
5. Having left Draupadi in the hermitage, with the permission of the great sage Tṛṇabindu and also of Dhaumya, the priest whose asceticism (tapas) was blazing.
ततस्तु राजा सिन्धूनां वार्द्धक्षत्रिर्महायशाः ।
विवाहकामः शाल्वेयान्प्रयातः सोऽभवत्तदा ॥६॥
6. tatastu rājā sindhūnāṁ vārddhakṣatrirmahāyaśāḥ ,
vivāhakāmaḥ śālveyānprayātaḥ so'bhavattadā.
6. tataḥ tu rājā sindhūnām vārdhakṣatriḥ mahāyaśāḥ
vivāhakāmaḥ śālveyān prayātaḥ saḥ abhavat tadā
6. Then, the glorious King of the Sindhus, Vārdhakṣatri, desiring marriage, set out for the Śālveyas at that time.
महता परिबर्हेण राजयोग्येन संवृतः ।
राजभिर्बहुभिः सार्धमुपायात्काम्यकं च सः ॥७॥
7. mahatā paribarheṇa rājayogyena saṁvṛtaḥ ,
rājabhirbahubhiḥ sārdhamupāyātkāmyakaṁ ca saḥ.
7. mahatā paribarheṇa rājyogyena saṃvṛtaḥ rājabhiḥ
bahubhiḥ sārdham upāyāt kāmyakam ca saḥ
7. Accompanied by a great entourage befitting a king, and together with many kings, he approached Kāmyaka.
तत्रापश्यत्प्रियां भार्यां पाण्डवानां यशस्विनीम् ।
तिष्ठन्तीमाश्रमद्वारि द्रौपदीं निर्जने वने ॥८॥
8. tatrāpaśyatpriyāṁ bhāryāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ yaśasvinīm ,
tiṣṭhantīmāśramadvāri draupadīṁ nirjane vane.
8. tatra apaśyat priyām bhāryām pāṇḍavānām yaśasvinīm
tiṣṭhantīm āśramadvāri draupadīm nirjane vane
8. There he saw Draupadi, the dear and glorious wife of the Pāṇḍavas, standing at the hermitage door in the solitary forest.
विभ्राजमानां वपुषा बिभ्रतीं रूपमुत्तमम् ।
भ्राजयन्तीं वनोद्देशं नीलाभ्रमिव विद्युतम् ॥९॥
9. vibhrājamānāṁ vapuṣā bibhratīṁ rūpamuttamam ,
bhrājayantīṁ vanoddeśaṁ nīlābhramiva vidyutam.
9. vibhrajamanām vapuṣā bibhratīm rūpam uttamam
bhrajayantīm vanoddeśam nīlabhram iva vidyutam
9. Shining with her form, possessing supreme beauty, she illuminated the forest region like lightning brightens a dark cloud.
अप्सरा देवकन्या वा माया वा देवनिर्मिता ।
इति कृत्वाञ्जलिं सर्वे ददृशुस्तामनिन्दिताम् ॥१०॥
10. apsarā devakanyā vā māyā vā devanirmitā ,
iti kṛtvāñjaliṁ sarve dadṛśustāmaninditām.
10. apsarā devakanyā vā māyā vā devanirmitā iti
kṛtvā añjalim sarve dadṛśuḥ tām aninditām
10. "Is she an Apsara, or a divine maiden, or an illusion (māyā) created by the gods?" Thinking thus, all of them, with joined hands (añjali), gazed at that blameless woman.
ततः स राजा सिन्धूनां वार्द्धक्षत्रिर्जयद्रथः ।
विस्मितस्तामनिन्द्याङ्गीं दृष्ट्वासीद्धृष्टमानसः ॥११॥
11. tataḥ sa rājā sindhūnāṁ vārddhakṣatrirjayadrathaḥ ,
vismitastāmanindyāṅgīṁ dṛṣṭvāsīddhṛṣṭamānasaḥ.
11. tataḥ sa rājā sindhūnām vārdhakṣatriḥ jayadrathaḥ
vismitaḥ tām anindyāṅgīm dṛṣṭvā āsīt hṛṣṭamānasaḥ
11. Then that King Jayadratha of the Sindhus, son of Vṛddhakṣatra, seeing that woman with a blameless form, became astonished and delighted in mind.
स कोटिकाश्यं राजानमब्रवीत्काममोहितः ।
कस्य त्वेषानवद्याङ्गी यदि वापि न मानुषी ॥१२॥
12. sa koṭikāśyaṁ rājānamabravītkāmamohitaḥ ,
kasya tveṣānavadyāṅgī yadi vāpi na mānuṣī.
12. sa koṭikāśyam rājānam abravīt kāmamohitaḥ
kasya tu eṣā anavadyāṅgī yadi vā api na mānuṣī
12. Infatuated by desire (kāma), he said to King Koṭikāśya, "Whose is this woman with faultless limbs, if indeed she is not even human?"
विवाहार्थो न मे कश्चिदिमां दृष्ट्वातिसुन्दरीम् ।
एतामेवाहमादाय गमिष्यामि स्वमालयम् ॥१३॥
13. vivāhārtho na me kaścidimāṁ dṛṣṭvātisundarīm ,
etāmevāhamādāya gamiṣyāmi svamālayam.
13. vivāhārthaḥ na me kaścit imām dṛṣṭvā atisundarīm
etām eva aham ādāya gamiṣyāmi svam ālayam
13. After seeing this exceedingly beautiful woman, I have no intention of marrying anyone else. I will certainly take this very one and go to my own abode.
गच्छ जानीहि सौम्यैनां कस्य का च कुतोऽपि वा ।
किमर्थमागता सुभ्रूरिदं कण्टकितं वनम् ॥१४॥
14. gaccha jānīhi saumyaināṁ kasya kā ca kuto'pi vā ,
kimarthamāgatā subhrūridaṁ kaṇṭakitaṁ vanam.
14. gaccha jānīhi saumya enām kasya kā ca kutaḥ api
vā kim artham āgatā subhrūḥ idam kaṇṭakitam vanam
14. Go, O gentle one, and find out whose daughter she is, and from where she has come, or for what purpose this beautiful-browed woman has arrived in this thorny forest.
अपि नाम वरारोहा मामेषा लोकसुन्दरी ।
भजेदद्यायतापाङ्गी सुदती तनुमध्यमा ॥१५॥
15. api nāma varārohā māmeṣā lokasundarī ,
bhajedadyāyatāpāṅgī sudatī tanumadhyamā.
15. api nāma varārohā mām eṣā lokasundarī
bhajet adya āyatāpāṅgī sudatī tanumadhyamā
15. Oh, would this most beautiful woman in the world, with her beautiful hips, long eyes, lovely teeth, and slender waist, choose to love me today?
अप्यहं कृतकामः स्यामिमां प्राप्य वरस्त्रियम् ।
गच्छ जानीहि को न्वस्या नाथ इत्येव कोटिक ॥१६॥
16. apyahaṁ kṛtakāmaḥ syāmimāṁ prāpya varastriyam ,
gaccha jānīhi ko nvasyā nātha ityeva koṭika.
16. api aham kṛtakāmaḥ syām imām prāpya varastriyam
gaccha jānīhi kaḥ nu asyāḥ nāthaḥ iti eva koṭika
16. Oh, may I become one whose desires are fulfilled by obtaining this excellent woman! Go, Kotika, and find out indeed who her lord (nātha) is.
स कोटिकाश्यस्तच्छ्रुत्वा रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य कुण्डली ।
उपेत्य पप्रच्छ तदा क्रोष्टा व्याघ्रवधूमिव ॥१७॥
17. sa koṭikāśyastacchrutvā rathātpraskandya kuṇḍalī ,
upetya papraccha tadā kroṣṭā vyāghravadhūmiva.
17. saḥ koṭikāśyaḥ tat śrutvā rathāt praskandya kuṇḍalī
upetya papraccha tadā kroṣṭā vyāghravadhūm iva
17. Then Kotikashya, wearing earrings, having heard that, jumped down from his chariot, approached her, and questioned her like a jackal questioning a tigress.
