वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं ते पुरुषव्याघ्राः पाण्डवा मातृनन्दनाः ।
स्मरन्तो मातरं वीरा बभूवुर्भृशदुःखिताः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ te puruṣavyāghrāḥ pāṇḍavā mātṛnandanāḥ ,
smaranto mātaraṁ vīrā babhūvurbhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus, those heroes among men, the Pāṇḍavas, who were their mother's delight, became exceedingly grieved while remembering their mother.
ये राजकार्येषु पुरा व्यासक्ता नित्यशोऽभवन् ।
ते राजकार्याणि तदा नाकार्षुः सर्वतः पुरे ॥२॥
2. ye rājakāryeṣu purā vyāsaktā nityaśo'bhavan ,
te rājakāryāṇi tadā nākārṣuḥ sarvataḥ pure.
2. ye rājakāryeṣu purā vyāsaktāḥ nityaśaḥ abhavan
| te rājakāryāṇi tadā na akārṣuḥ sarvataḥ pure
2. ye purā rājakāryeṣu nityaśaḥ vyāsaktāḥ abhavan

2. Those who were formerly always engrossed in royal affairs did not perform any of those duties in the city at that time.
आविष्टा इव शोकेन नाभ्यनन्दन्त किंचन ।
संभाष्यमाणा अपि ते न किंचित्प्रत्यपूजयन् ॥३॥
3. āviṣṭā iva śokena nābhyanandanta kiṁcana ,
saṁbhāṣyamāṇā api te na kiṁcitpratyapūjayan.
3. āviṣṭāḥ iva śokena na abhyanandanta kiṃcana |
saṃbhāṣyamāṇāḥ api te na kiṃcit pratyapūjayan
3. śokena āviṣṭāḥ iva,
te kiṃcana na abhyanandanta saṃbhāṣyamāṇāḥ api te kiṃcit na pratyapūjayan
3. As if overwhelmed by sorrow, they found no delight in anything. Even when spoken to, they did not respond to anything at all.
ते स्म वीरा दुराधर्षा गाम्भीर्ये सागरोपमाः ।
शोकोपहतविज्ञाना नष्टसंज्ञा इवाभवन् ॥४॥
4. te sma vīrā durādharṣā gāmbhīrye sāgaropamāḥ ,
śokopahatavijñānā naṣṭasaṁjñā ivābhavan.
4. te sma vīrāḥ durādharṣāḥ gāmbhīrye sāgaropamāḥ
| śokopahatavijñānāḥ naṣṭasaṃjñāḥ iva abhavan
4. te durādharṣāḥ vīrāḥ sma,
gāmbhīrye sāgaropamāḥ śokopahatavijñānāḥ naṣṭasaṃjñāḥ iva abhavan
4. Those unconquerable heroes, who were like oceans in their profundity, became as if unconscious, their understanding shattered by grief.
अनुस्मरन्तो जननीं ततस्ते कुरुनन्दनाः ।
कथं नु वृद्धमिथुनं वहत्यद्य पृथा कृशा ॥५॥
5. anusmaranto jananīṁ tataste kurunandanāḥ ,
kathaṁ nu vṛddhamithunaṁ vahatyadya pṛthā kṛśā.
5. anusmarantaḥ jananīm tataḥ te kurunandanāḥ
katham nu vṛddhamithunam vahati adya pṛthā kṛśā
5. te kurunandanāḥ tataḥ jananīm anusmarantaḥ adya
kṛśā pṛthā vṛddhamithunam nu katham vahati
5. Remembering their mother, the Kuru princes then wondered, 'How indeed does the emaciated Kunti now sustain the aged couple?'
कथं च स महीपालो हतपुत्रो निराश्रयः ।
पत्न्या सह वसत्येको वने श्वापदसेविते ॥६॥
6. kathaṁ ca sa mahīpālo hataputro nirāśrayaḥ ,
patnyā saha vasatyeko vane śvāpadasevite.
6. katham ca saḥ mahīpālaḥ hataputraḥ nirāśrayaḥ
patnyā saha vasati ekaḥ vane śvāpadasevite
6. ca katham saḥ hataputraḥ nirāśrayaḥ mahīpālaḥ
ekaḥ patnyā saha śvāpadasevite vane vasati
6. And how does that king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), who has lost his sons and is without support, live alone with his wife in a forest frequented by wild animals?
सा च देवी महाभागा गान्धारी हतबान्धवा ।
पतिमन्धं कथं वृद्धमन्वेति विजने वने ॥७॥
7. sā ca devī mahābhāgā gāndhārī hatabāndhavā ,
patimandhaṁ kathaṁ vṛddhamanveti vijane vane.
7. sā ca devī mahābhāgā gāndhārī hatabāndhavā
patim andham katham vṛddham anveti vijane vane
7. ca katham sā mahābhāgā hatabāndhavā devī
gāndhārī vijane vane andham vṛddham patim anveti
7. And how does that illustrious Queen Gandhari, having lost all her kinsmen, follow her blind, aged husband into a desolate forest?
एवं तेषां कथयतामौत्सुक्यमभवत्तदा ।
गमने चाभवद्बुद्धिर्धृतराष्ट्रदिदृक्षया ॥८॥
8. evaṁ teṣāṁ kathayatāmautsukyamabhavattadā ,
gamane cābhavadbuddhirdhṛtarāṣṭradidṛkṣayā.
8. evam teṣām kathayatām autsukyam abhavat tadā
gamane ca abhavat buddhiḥ dhṛtarāṣṭradidṛkṣayā
8. evam teṣām kathayatām tadā autsukyam abhavat
ca gamane dhṛtarāṣṭradidṛkṣayā buddhiḥ abhavat
8. Thus, as they conversed, an eagerness arose within them. And the intention to depart, driven by the desire to see Dhritarashtra, also came about.
सहदेवस्तु राजानं प्रणिपत्येदमब्रवीत् ।
अहो मे भवतो दृष्टं हृदयं गमनं प्रति ॥९॥
9. sahadevastu rājānaṁ praṇipatyedamabravīt ,
aho me bhavato dṛṣṭaṁ hṛdayaṁ gamanaṁ prati.
9. sahadevaḥ tu rājānam praṇipatya idam abravīt
aho me bhavataḥ dṛṣṭam hṛdayam gamanam prati
9. Sahadeva, bowing down to the king, then spoke these words: "Alas, I have perceived your intention regarding the departure!"
न हि त्वा गौरवेणाहमशकं वक्तुमात्मना ।
गमनं प्रति राजेन्द्र तदिदं समुपस्थितम् ॥१०॥
10. na hi tvā gauraveṇāhamaśakaṁ vaktumātmanā ,
gamanaṁ prati rājendra tadidaṁ samupasthitam.
10. na hi tvā gauraveṇa aham aśakam vaktum ātmanā
gamanam prati rājendra tat idam samupasthitam
10. Indeed, O King, I was unable to speak to you personally (ātman) about this departure out of deference. Now, that very thing has come to pass.
दिष्ट्या द्रक्ष्यामि तां कुन्तीं वर्तयन्तीं तपस्विनीम् ।
जटिलां तापसीं वृद्धां कुशकाशपरिक्षताम् ॥११॥
11. diṣṭyā drakṣyāmi tāṁ kuntīṁ vartayantīṁ tapasvinīm ,
jaṭilāṁ tāpasīṁ vṛddhāṁ kuśakāśaparikṣatām.
11. diṣṭyā drakṣyāmi tām kuntīm vartayantīm tapasvinīm
jaṭilām tāpasīm vṛddhām kuśakāśaparikṣatām
11. Fortunately, I shall see that Kunti, living as an ascetic woman (tapasvinī), with matted locks, a female recluse, aged, and worn out by kuśa and kāśa grass.
प्रासादहर्म्यसंवृद्धामत्यन्तसुखभागिनीम् ।
कदा नु जननीं श्रान्तां द्रक्ष्यामि भृशदुःखिताम् ॥१२॥
12. prāsādaharmyasaṁvṛddhāmatyantasukhabhāginīm ,
kadā nu jananīṁ śrāntāṁ drakṣyāmi bhṛśaduḥkhitām.
12. prāsādaharmyasaṃvṛddhām atyantasukhabhāginīm
kadā nu jananīm śrāntām drakṣyāmi bhṛśaduḥkhitām
12. When, indeed, shall I see my mother, who was raised amidst palaces and mansions, who enjoyed extreme happiness, but is now weary and deeply distressed?
अनित्याः खलु मर्त्यानां गतयो भरतर्षभ ।
कुन्ती राजसुता यत्र वसत्यसुखिनी वने ॥१३॥
13. anityāḥ khalu martyānāṁ gatayo bharatarṣabha ,
kuntī rājasutā yatra vasatyasukhinī vane.
13. anityāḥ khalu martyānām gatayaḥ bharatarṣabha
kuntī rājasutā yatra vasati asukhinī vane
13. bharatarṣabha,
martyānām gatayaḥ khalu anityāḥ.
yatra rājasutā kuntī asukhinī vane vasati.
13. Indeed, O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), the destinies of mortals are impermanent. Where Kuntī, the princess, lives unhappily in the forest.
सहदेववचः श्रुत्वा द्रौपदी योषितां वरा ।
उवाच देवी राजानमभिपूज्याभिनन्द्य च ॥१४॥
14. sahadevavacaḥ śrutvā draupadī yoṣitāṁ varā ,
uvāca devī rājānamabhipūjyābhinandya ca.
14. sahadevavacaḥ śrutvā draupadī yoṣitām varā
uvāca devī rājānam abhipūjya abhinandya ca
14. yoṣitām varā draupadī sahadevavacaḥ śrutvā,
devī rājānam abhipūjya abhinandya ca uvāca.
14. Having heard Sahadeva's words, Draupadī, the foremost among women, spoke to the king, having honored and greeted him.
कदा द्रक्ष्यामि तां देवीं यदि जीवति सा पृथा ।
जीवन्त्या ह्यद्य नः प्रीतिर्भविष्यति नराधिप ॥१५॥
15. kadā drakṣyāmi tāṁ devīṁ yadi jīvati sā pṛthā ,
jīvantyā hyadya naḥ prītirbhaviṣyati narādhipa.
15. kadā drakṣyāmi tām devīm yadi jīvati sā pṛthā
jīvantyā hi adya naḥ prītiḥ bhaviṣyati narādhipa
15. yadi sā pṛthā jīvati,
tām devīm kadā drakṣyāmi? hi jīvantyā narādhipa,
adya naḥ prītiḥ bhaviṣyati.
15. When shall I see that queen (devī), Pṛthā, if she is still alive? For if she is living, O king (narādhipa), our joy will certainly come today.
एषा तेऽस्तु मतिर्नित्यं धर्मे ते रमतां मनः ।
योऽद्य त्वमस्मान्राजेन्द्र श्रेयसा योजयिष्यसि ॥१६॥
16. eṣā te'stu matirnityaṁ dharme te ramatāṁ manaḥ ,
yo'dya tvamasmānrājendra śreyasā yojayiṣyasi.
16. eṣā te astu matiḥ nityam dharme te ramatām manaḥ
yaḥ adya tvam asmān rājendra śreyasā yojayiṣyasi
16. eṣā matiḥ te nityam astu.
te manaḥ dharme ramatām.
rājendra,
yaḥ tvam adya asmān śreyasā yojayiṣyasi.
16. Let this be your constant resolve, and let your mind (manas) delight in natural law (dharma), O lord of kings (rājendra), for you will today unite us with prosperity.
अग्रपादस्थितं चेमं विद्धि राजन्वधूजनम् ।
काङ्क्षन्तं दर्शनं कुन्त्या गान्धार्याः श्वशुरस्य च ॥१७॥
17. agrapādasthitaṁ cemaṁ viddhi rājanvadhūjanam ,
kāṅkṣantaṁ darśanaṁ kuntyā gāndhāryāḥ śvaśurasya ca.
17. agrapādasthitam ca imam viddhi rājan vadhūjanam
kāṅkṣantam darśanam kuntyāḥ gāndhāryāḥ śvaśurasya ca
17. rājan imam vadhūjanam agrapādasthitam ca kāṅkṣantam
kuntyāḥ gāndhāryāḥ ca śvaśurasya darśanam viddhi
17. O king, understand that these women, standing at the forefront, desire to have an audience with Kunti, Gāndhārī, and the father-in-law (Dhṛtarāṣṭra).
इत्युक्तः स नृपो देव्या पाञ्चाल्या भरतर्षभ ।
सेनाध्यक्षान्समानाय्य सर्वानिदमथाब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. ityuktaḥ sa nṛpo devyā pāñcālyā bharatarṣabha ,
senādhyakṣānsamānāyya sarvānidamathābravīt.
18. iti uktaḥ saḥ nṛpaḥ devyā pāñcālyā bharatarṣabha
senādhyakṣān samānāyya sarvān idam atha abravīt
18. bharatarṣabha devyā pāñcālyā iti uktaḥ saḥ nṛpaḥ
atha sarvān senādhyakṣān samānāyya idam abravīt
18. O bull among Bharatas, having been addressed thus by Queen Draupadi (Pāñcālī), the king then summoned all the army commanders and spoke the following.
निर्यातयत मे सेनां प्रभूतरथकुञ्जराम् ।
द्रक्ष्यामि वनसंस्थं च धृतराष्ट्रं महीपतिम् ॥१९॥
19. niryātayata me senāṁ prabhūtarathakuñjarām ,
drakṣyāmi vanasaṁsthaṁ ca dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahīpatim.
19. niryātayata me senām prabhūtarathakuñjarām
drakṣyāmi vanasaṃstham ca dhṛtarāṣṭram mahīpatim
19. me prabhūtarathakuñjarām senām niryātayata
vanasaṃstham ca dhṛtarāṣṭram mahīpatim drakṣyāmi
19. Mobilize my army, which has many chariots and elephants. I will go to see King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who is residing in the forest.
स्त्र्यध्यक्षांश्चाब्रवीद्राजा यानानि विविधानि मे ।
सज्जीक्रियन्तां सर्वाणि शिबिकाश्च सहस्रशः ॥२०॥
20. stryadhyakṣāṁścābravīdrājā yānāni vividhāni me ,
sajjīkriyantāṁ sarvāṇi śibikāśca sahasraśaḥ.
20. stryadhyakṣān ca abravīt rājā yānāni vividhāni
me sajjīkriyantām sarvāṇi śibikāḥ ca sahasraśaḥ
20. rājā stryadhyakṣān ca abravīt me sarvāṇi vividhāni
yānāni ca śibikāḥ sahasraśaḥ sajjīkriyantām
20. The king also told the superintendents of women: 'Let all my various conveyances and palanquins be prepared by the thousands.'
शकटापणवेशाश्च कोशशिल्पिन एव च ।
निर्यान्तु कोशपालाश्च कुरुक्षेत्राश्रमं प्रति ॥२१॥
21. śakaṭāpaṇaveśāśca kośaśilpina eva ca ,
niryāntu kośapālāśca kurukṣetrāśramaṁ prati.
21. śakaṭāpaṇaveśāḥ ca kośaśilpinaḥ eva ca
niryāntu kośapālāḥ ca kurukṣetrāśramam prati
21. śakaṭāpaṇaveśāḥ ca kośaśilpinaḥ eva ca
kośapālāḥ ca kurukṣetrāśramam prati niryāntu
21. Let those associated with carts, shops, and establishments, along with the treasury craftsmen and treasury custodians, all proceed towards the Kurukshetra hermitage (āśrama).
यश्च पौरजनः कश्चिद्द्रष्टुमिच्छति पार्थिवम् ।
अनावृतः सुविहितः स च यातु सुरक्षितः ॥२२॥
22. yaśca paurajanaḥ kaściddraṣṭumicchati pārthivam ,
anāvṛtaḥ suvihitaḥ sa ca yātu surakṣitaḥ.
22. yaḥ ca paurajanaḥ kaścit draṣṭum icchati pārthivam
anāvṛtaḥ suvihitaḥ saḥ ca yātu surakṣitaḥ
22. yaḥ ca kaścit paurajanaḥ pārthivam draṣṭum icchati,
saḥ anāvṛtaḥ suvihitaḥ surakṣitaḥ ca yātu
22. And any citizen who wishes to see the king, let him proceed unimpeded, well-prepared, and protected.
सूदाः पौरोगवाश्चैव सर्वं चैव महानसम् ।
विविधं भक्ष्यभोज्यं च शकटैरुह्यतां मम ॥२३॥
23. sūdāḥ paurogavāścaiva sarvaṁ caiva mahānasam ,
vividhaṁ bhakṣyabhojyaṁ ca śakaṭairuhyatāṁ mama.
23. sūdāḥ paurogavāḥ ca eva sarvam ca eva mahānasam
vividham bhakṣyabhojyam ca śakaṭaiḥ uhyatām mama
23. sūdāḥ ca eva paurogavāḥ ca eva sarvam mahānasam
vividham bhakṣyabhojyam ca mama śakaṭaiḥ uhyatām
23. Let the cooks, chief kitchen staff, and all the kitchen's diverse chewable and consumable food be transported for me by carts.
प्रयाणं घुष्यतां चैव श्वोभूत इति मा चिरम् ।
क्रियन्तां पथि चाप्यद्य वेश्मानि विविधानि च ॥२४॥
24. prayāṇaṁ ghuṣyatāṁ caiva śvobhūta iti mā ciram ,
kriyantāṁ pathi cāpyadya veśmāni vividhāni ca.
24. prayāṇam ghuṣyatām ca eva śvobhūta iti mā ciram
kriyantām pathi ca api adya veśmāni vividhāni ca
24. ca eva prayāṇam śvobhūta iti mā ciram ghuṣyatām
ca api adya pathi vividhāni veśmāni kriyantām
24. Let the departure be announced for 'tomorrow' without delay. And today, let various dwellings also be constructed along the path.
एवमाज्ञाप्य राजा स भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवः ।
श्वोभूते निर्ययौ राजा सस्त्रीबालपुरस्कृतः ॥२५॥
25. evamājñāpya rājā sa bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaḥ ,
śvobhūte niryayau rājā sastrībālapuraskṛtaḥ.
25. evam ājñāpya rājā saḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaḥ
śvobhūte niryayau rājā sastrībālapuraskṛtaḥ
25. saḥ pāṇḍavaḥ rājā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha evam
ājñāpya śvobhūte sastrībālapuraskṛtaḥ niryayau
25. Having given such a command, that Pāṇḍava king, along with his brothers, departed the next day. The king set out, with women and children going before him.
स बहिर्दिवसानेवं जनौघं परिपालयन् ।
न्यवसन्नृपतिः पञ्च ततोऽगच्छद्वनं प्रति ॥२६॥
26. sa bahirdivasānevaṁ janaughaṁ paripālayan ,
nyavasannṛpatiḥ pañca tato'gacchadvanaṁ prati.
26. saḥ bahiḥ divasān evam janaugham paripālayan
nyavasat nṛpatiḥ pañca tataḥ agacchat vanam prati
26. saḥ nṛpatiḥ evam bahiḥ pañca divasān janaugham
paripālayan nyavasat tataḥ vanam prati agacchat
26. In this manner, the king dwelt outside for five days, protecting the multitudes of people. Thereafter, he went towards the forest.
