लोमश उवाच ।
चङ्क्रम्यमाणः स तदा यवक्रीरकुतोभयः ।
जगाम माधवे मासि रैभ्याश्रमपदं प्रति ॥१॥
1. lomaśa uvāca ,
caṅkramyamāṇaḥ sa tadā yavakrīrakutobhayaḥ ,
jagāma mādhave māsi raibhyāśramapadaṁ prati.

1. Lomasa said: Then, Yavakri, fearless and roaming about, went towards Raibhya's hermitage (āśrama) ground in the month of Madhava.
स ददर्शाश्रमे पुण्ये पुष्पितद्रुमभूषिते ।
विचरन्तीं स्नुषां तस्य किंनरीमिव भारत ॥२॥
2. sa dadarśāśrame puṇye puṣpitadrumabhūṣite ,
vicarantīṁ snuṣāṁ tasya kiṁnarīmiva bhārata.
2. sa dadarśa āśrame puṇye puṣpitadrumabhūṣite
vicarantīm snuṣām tasya kiṃnarīm iva bhārata
2. O Bharata, in that sacred hermitage (āśrama), adorned with flowering trees, he saw Raibhya's daughter-in-law wandering about, looking like a Kinnari.
यवक्रीस्तामुवाचेदमुपतिष्ठस्व मामिति ।
निर्लज्जो लज्जया युक्तां कामेन हृतचेतनः ॥३॥
3. yavakrīstāmuvācedamupatiṣṭhasva māmiti ,
nirlajjo lajjayā yuktāṁ kāmena hṛtacetanaḥ.
3. yavakrītas tām uvāca idam upatiṣṭhasva mām iti
nirlajjaḥ lajjayā yuktām kāmena hṛtacetanaḥ
3. Shameless Yavakri, whose consciousness had been stolen by desire (kāma), said this to her, who was filled with modesty: "Come to me."
सा तस्य शीलमाज्ञाय तस्माच्छापाच्च बिभ्यती ।
तेजस्वितां च रैभ्यस्य तथेत्युक्त्वा जगाम सा ॥४॥
4. sā tasya śīlamājñāya tasmācchāpācca bibhyatī ,
tejasvitāṁ ca raibhyasya tathetyuktvā jagāma sā.
4. sā tasya śīlam ājñāya tasmāt śāpāt ca bibhyatī
tejasvitām ca raibhyasya tathā iti uktvā jagāma sā
4. Having understood his character and fearing that curse, and also recognizing Raibhya's spiritual power, she said, "So be it," and then she departed.
तत एकान्तमुन्नीय मज्जयामास भारत ।
आजगाम तदा रैभ्यः स्वमाश्रममरिंदम ॥५॥
5. tata ekāntamunnīya majjayāmāsa bhārata ,
ājagāma tadā raibhyaḥ svamāśramamariṁdama.
5. tataḥ ekāntam unnīya majjayāmāsa bhārata
ājagāma tadā raibhyaḥ svam āśramam ariṃdama
5. "O Bharata, O subduer of enemies (ariṃdama)," he (Yavakri) then led her to a secluded spot and caused her to bathe. At that time, Raibhya arrived at his hermitage (āśrama).
रुदन्तीं च स्नुषां दृष्ट्वा भार्यामार्तां परावसोः ।
सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया वाचा पर्यपृच्छद्युधिष्ठिर ॥६॥
6. rudantīṁ ca snuṣāṁ dṛṣṭvā bhāryāmārtāṁ parāvasoḥ ,
sāntvayañślakṣṇayā vācā paryapṛcchadyudhiṣṭhira.
6. rudantīm ca snuṣām dṛṣṭvā bhāryām ārtām parāvasoḥ
sāntvayan ślakṣṇayā vācā paryapṛcchat yudhiṣṭhira
6. "O Yudhishthira," upon seeing his weeping and distressed daughter-in-law, who was Paravasu's wife, he, comforting her with gentle words, then inquired.
सा तस्मै सर्वमाचष्ट यवक्रीभाषितं शुभा ।
प्रत्युक्तं च यवक्रीतं प्रेक्षापूर्वं तदात्मना ॥७॥
7. sā tasmai sarvamācaṣṭa yavakrībhāṣitaṁ śubhā ,
pratyuktaṁ ca yavakrītaṁ prekṣāpūrvaṁ tadātmanā.
7. sā tasmai sarvam ācaṣṭa yavakrītabhāṣitam śubhā
pratyuktam ca yavakrītam prekṣāpūrvam tat ātmanā
7. The auspicious lady (Raibhya's daughter-in-law) recounted everything to him (Raibhya): what Yavakrita had spoken, and what had been done to Yavakrita in response, all performed by her own self (ātman) with careful consideration.
शृण्वानस्यैव रैभ्यस्य यवक्रीतविचेष्टितम् ।
दहन्निव तदा चेतः क्रोधः समभवन्महान् ॥८॥
8. śṛṇvānasyaiva raibhyasya yavakrītaviceṣṭitam ,
dahanniva tadā cetaḥ krodhaḥ samabhavanmahān.
8. śṛṇvānasya eva raibhyasya yavakrītaviceṣṭitam
dahan iva tadā cetaḥ krodhaḥ sam abhavat mahān
8. While Raibhya was listening to Yavakrita's actions, a great anger (krodha) arose in his heart (cetas), as if burning it.
स तदा मन्युनाविष्टस्तपस्वी भृशकोपनः ।
अवलुप्य जटामेकां जुहावाग्नौ सुसंस्कृते ॥९॥
9. sa tadā manyunāviṣṭastapasvī bhṛśakopanaḥ ,
avalupya jaṭāmekāṁ juhāvāgnau susaṁskṛte.
9. sa tadā manyunā āviṣṭaḥ tapasvī bhṛśakopanaḥ
avalupya jaṭām ekām juhāva agnau susaṃskṛte
9. Then, that ascetic (tapasvin), overcome by anger (manyu) and extremely wrathful, tore out one of his matted locks (jaṭā) and offered it into the well-consecrated fire (agni).
ततः समभवन्नारी तस्या रूपेण संमिता ।
अवलुप्यापरां चाथ जुहावाग्नौ जटां पुनः ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ samabhavannārī tasyā rūpeṇa saṁmitā ,
avalupyāparāṁ cātha juhāvāgnau jaṭāṁ punaḥ.
10. tataḥ sam abhavat nārī tasyā rūpeṇa sammitā
avalupya aparām ca atha juhāva agnau jaṭām punaḥ
10. From that (offering), a woman appeared, resembling her (the daughter-in-law) in form. Then, having plucked another matted lock (jaṭā), he again offered it into the fire (agni).
ततः समभवद्रक्षो घोराक्षं भीमदर्शनम् ।
अब्रूतां तौ तदा रैभ्यं किं कार्यं करवामहे ॥११॥
11. tataḥ samabhavadrakṣo ghorākṣaṁ bhīmadarśanam ,
abrūtāṁ tau tadā raibhyaṁ kiṁ kāryaṁ karavāmahe.
11. tataḥ samabhavat rakṣaḥ ghorākṣam bhīmadarśanam
| abrūtām tau tadā raibhyam kim kāryam karavāmahe
11. Then a demon (rakṣas) with dreadful eyes and a terrifying appearance manifested. At that time, those two (disciples) said to Raibhya, 'What task should we accomplish?'
तावब्रवीदृषिः क्रुद्धो यवक्रीर्वध्यतामिति ।
जग्मतुस्तौ तथेत्युक्त्वा यवक्रीतजिघांसया ॥१२॥
12. tāvabravīdṛṣiḥ kruddho yavakrīrvadhyatāmiti ,
jagmatustau tathetyuktvā yavakrītajighāṁsayā.
12. tau abravīt ṛṣiḥ kruddhaḥ yavakrīḥ vadhyatām iti |
jagmatuḥ tau tathā iti uktvā yavakrīta-jighāṃsayā
12. The enraged sage (ṛṣi) told those two, 'Let Yavakrīta be killed!' Saying 'So be it,' they both departed with the intention of slaying Yavakrīta.
ततस्तं समुपास्थाय कृत्या सृष्टा महात्मना ।
कमण्डलुं जहारास्य मोहयित्वा तु भारत ॥१३॥
13. tatastaṁ samupāsthāya kṛtyā sṛṣṭā mahātmanā ,
kamaṇḍaluṁ jahārāsya mohayitvā tu bhārata.
13. tataḥ tam samupāsthāya kṛtyā sṛṣṭā mahātmanā
| kamaṇḍalum jahāra asya mohayitvā tu bhārata
13. Thereafter, the Kṛtyā, created by the great soul (mahātman), approached him and, after deluding him, seized his water-pot (kamaṇḍalu), O Bhārata.
उच्छिष्टं तु यवक्रीतमपकृष्टकमण्डलुम् ।
तत उद्यतशूलः स राक्षसः समुपाद्रवत् ॥१४॥
14. ucchiṣṭaṁ tu yavakrītamapakṛṣṭakamaṇḍalum ,
tata udyataśūlaḥ sa rākṣasaḥ samupādravat.
14. ucchiṣṭam tu yavakrītam apakṛṣṭa-kamaṇḍalum |
tataḥ udyata-śūlaḥ saḥ rākṣasaḥ samupādravat
14. Then, that demon (rakṣas), wielding an uplifted spear, rushed towards Yavakrīta, who was in a defiled (ucchiṣṭa) state and whose water-pot (kamaṇḍalu) had been snatched away.
तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य शूलहस्तं जिघांसया ।
यवक्रीः सहसोत्थाय प्राद्रवद्येन वै सरः ॥१५॥
15. tamāpatantaṁ saṁprekṣya śūlahastaṁ jighāṁsayā ,
yavakrīḥ sahasotthāya prādravadyena vai saraḥ.
15. tam āpatantam samprekṣya śūlahastam jighāṃsayā
yavakrīḥ sahasā utthāya prādravat yena vai saraḥ
15. Upon seeing him, approaching with a trident in hand and a desire to kill, Yavakrī suddenly rose and fled towards the lake.
जलहीनं सरो दृष्ट्वा यवक्रीस्त्वरितः पुनः ।
जगाम सरितः सर्वास्ताश्चाप्यासन्विशोषिताः ॥१६॥
16. jalahīnaṁ saro dṛṣṭvā yavakrīstvaritaḥ punaḥ ,
jagāma saritaḥ sarvāstāścāpyāsanviśoṣitāḥ.
16. jalahīnam saraḥ dṛṣṭvā yavakrīḥ tvaritaḥ punaḥ
jagāma saritaḥ sarvāḥ tāḥ ca api āsan viśoṣitāḥ
16. Upon seeing the lake without water, Yavakrī quickly went again to all the rivers, but they too were completely dried up.
स काल्यमानो घोरेण शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा ।
अग्निहोत्रं पितुर्भीतः सहसा समुपाद्रवत् ॥१७॥
17. sa kālyamāno ghoreṇa śūlahastena rakṣasā ,
agnihotraṁ piturbhītaḥ sahasā samupādravat.
17. saḥ kālyamānaḥ ghoreṇa śūlahastena rakṣasā
agnihotram pituḥ bhītaḥ sahasā samupādravat
17. Being pursued by the terrible, trident-wielding demon (rakṣasa), he, filled with fear, suddenly fled to his father's sacred fire (agnihotra).
स वै प्रविशमानस्तु शूद्रेणान्धेन रक्षिणा ।
निगृहीतो बलाद्द्वारि सोऽवातिष्ठत पार्थिव ॥१८॥
18. sa vai praviśamānastu śūdreṇāndhena rakṣiṇā ,
nigṛhīto balāddvāri so'vātiṣṭhata pārthiva.
18. saḥ vai praviśamānaḥ tu śūdreṇa andhena rakṣiṇā
nigṛhītaḥ balāt dvāri saḥ avātiṣṭhata pārthiva
18. However, as he (Yavakrī) was attempting to enter, he was seized by force at the gate by a blind śūdra guard. There, he remained, O king.
निगृहीतं तु शूद्रेण यवक्रीतं स राक्षसः ।
ताडयामास शूलेन स भिन्नहृदयोऽपतत् ॥१९॥
19. nigṛhītaṁ tu śūdreṇa yavakrītaṁ sa rākṣasaḥ ,
tāḍayāmāsa śūlena sa bhinnahṛdayo'patat.
19. nigṛhītam tu śūdreṇa yavakrītam sa rākṣasaḥ
tāḍayāmāsa śūlena sa bhinnahṛdayaḥ apatat
19. That demon, disguised as a śūdra, seized Yavakrita. He then struck him with a spear, and Yavakrita, with his heart shattered, fell down.
यवक्रीतं स हत्वा तु राक्षसो रैभ्यमागमत् ।
अनुज्ञातस्तु रैभ्येण तया नार्या सहाचरत् ॥२०॥
20. yavakrītaṁ sa hatvā tu rākṣaso raibhyamāgamat ,
anujñātastu raibhyeṇa tayā nāryā sahācarat.
20. yavakrītam sa hatvā tu rākṣasaḥ raibhyam āgamat
anujñātaḥ tu raibhyena tayā nāryā saha ācarat
20. That demon, having killed Yavakrita, then went to Raibhya. Having received permission from Raibhya, he subsequently behaved intimately with that woman.
