Vaiśaṃpāyana said: When Indra had departed in the same manner as he had arrived, Bhībhatsu (Arjuna), accompanied by his brothers and Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), honored the son of Dharma (Yudhishthira).

And indeed, exceedingly delighted, he smelled the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna) on the head as Arjuna was offering salutations, and spoke to him with a voice choked with joy.

O Arjuna, how did you spend this time in heaven? And how did you obtain the weapons? And how was the king of the gods (devendra) pleased?

O subjugator of enemies (arindama), the revered Indra (Śatakratu) told you, 'I have been pleased by you.' What exactly was that favor (priya) you did for him? O greatly radiant one, I wish to hear this in detail.

O king, O destroyer of enemies (arimardana), after learning that knowledge (vidyā) which you imparted, and having been directed by you towards asceticism (tapas), I proceeded to the forest.

After going to Bhṛgutunga, and having resided in Kāmyaka engaged in austerities (tapas) for one night, I saw a certain Brahmin on the path.

O son of Pāṇḍu, my second month passed by while I consumed only water. Then, in the third month, I was completely without food.

I remained with my arms raised for the fourth month, and my life-force (prāṇa) did not diminish. That was astonishing.

Then, following him, another great being appeared, resembling a Kirāta (a mountain tribesman), equipped with a bow, arrows, and a sword, and accompanied by a retinue of women.

And simultaneously, that Kirāta (mountain tribesman), having powerfully drawn his bow, struck (me) very fiercely, as if making my mind tremble.

Then, with mighty arrows, he covered me completely, as if I were a mountain. And I, in turn, overwhelmed him with a great volley of arrows.

30.
I was unable to kill him, which seemed quite astonishing. When that weapon was repelled, my amazement became immense.

31.
And then again, O great king, I, with particular intensity, showered beings in battle with a vast multitude of weapons.

32.
O sinless one (anagha), I then deployed a network of *sthūṇākarṇa* weapons, a shower of arrows thick with missiles; and employing a mountain-weapon (śailāstra) and a rain of stones, I advanced. But he, laughing, swallowed all those weapons of mine.

33.
When all those other weapons were nullified, I deployed the *brahmāstra* (brahman weapon). Then, he (the opponent) was completely engulfed by blazing arrows. Even as he was thus enveloped by my great weapon, he (the opponent) continued to grow (in power/size).

34.
Then, the world was tormented by the fiery energy produced by me. Indeed, in an instant, the directions and the sky were completely lit up everywhere.

35.
Even that weapon, the greatly powerful entity instantly shattered it. But, O King, when the Brahmāstra (brahmāstra) was destroyed, a great fear (bhaya) seized me.

36.
Then, taking up my bow and the two inexhaustible great quivers, I suddenly struck the creature. But that creature devoured even those weapons.

When all weapons were destroyed and my weapons were consumed, then hand-to-hand combat (bāhuyuddha) ensued between me and that creature.

38.
After wrestling with my fists and also striking with my palms, I made that being fall. Then, I too became motionless and fell to the ground.

39.
Then, O great king, that being, having laughed, disappeared right there, accompanied by women, a wondrous sight to me as I watched.

Having acted thus, that divine being (bhagavān), O great king, then assumed another form of his own (ātman) - a truly divine one - while wearing a wondrous garment.

41.
And that divine Lord of the gods (tridaśeśvara), abandoning the form of a Kirāta, assumed his own divine true form and stood there as the Great Lord (Maheśvara).

42.
Then, the divine Lord whose banner is a bull, accompanied by Uma, possessing Vishnu's eye, appearing in many forms, and wielding the Pinaka bow, was directly seen.

Then, He, the spear-wielding (Shiva), having approached me as I stood facing Him in battle, said, 'I am pleased,' O scorcher of foes.

Then, the divine Lord, having taken up that bow and two quivers with inexhaustible arrows, gave them to me and said, 'Choose a boon!'

45.
I am pleased with you, O son of Kunti. Tell me, what may I do for you? O hero, whatever is in your mind, tell me that, and I shall bestow it. Excluding immortality, tell me whatever you desire.

Then, with folded hands and my mind fixed on the weapons, I bowed my head to Śarva (Śiva) and then spoke these words.

47.
"If Your Lordship is pleased with me, then this is the boon I desire: I wish to know whatever weapons exist among the gods." The Lord (Bhagavān), the three-eyed one (Tryambaka), then said to me, "I grant them."

And the Great God (Mahādeva), having bestowed upon me the eternal (sanātana) weapon, said: "This weapon should never, under any circumstances, be used against human beings."

Having been permitted by him, I sat down right there. And as I was watching, the god disappeared right there.
