व्यास उवाच ।
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो यदाह कुरुनन्दनः ।
धृतराष्ट्रो महात्मा त्वां तत्कुरुष्वाविचारयन् ॥१॥
1. vyāsa uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho yadāha kurunandanaḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahātmā tvāṁ tatkuruṣvāvicārayan.

1. Vyāsa said: 'O Yudhiṣṭhira, O mighty-armed one, do without hesitation that which the great-souled Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the delight of the Kurus, has said to you.'
अयं हि वृद्धो नृपतिर्हतपुत्रो विशेषतः ।
नेदं कृच्छ्रं चिरतरं सहेदिति मतिर्मम ॥२॥
2. ayaṁ hi vṛddho nṛpatirhataputro viśeṣataḥ ,
nedaṁ kṛcchraṁ cirataraṁ sahediti matirmama.
2. ayam hi vṛddhaḥ nṛpatiḥ hataputraḥ viśeṣataḥ na
idam kṛcchram cirataram sahet iti matiḥ mama
2. hi ayam vṛddhaḥ hataputraḥ nṛpatiḥ viśeṣataḥ
idam kṛcchram cirataram na sahet iti mama matiḥ
2. Indeed, this old king, whose sons have been killed, especially so, will not endure this severe hardship for much longer. This is my opinion.
गान्धारी च महाभागा प्राज्ञा करुणवेदिनी ।
पुत्रशोकं महाराज धैर्येणोद्वहते भृशम् ॥३॥
3. gāndhārī ca mahābhāgā prājñā karuṇavedinī ,
putraśokaṁ mahārāja dhairyeṇodvahate bhṛśam.

putraśokam mahārāja dhairyeṇa udvahate bhṛśam
3. ca mahārāja mahābhāgā prājñā karuṇavedinī

3. And the highly esteemed Gāndhārī, who is wise and compassionate, O great king, bears the profound grief for her sons with great fortitude.
अहमप्येतदेव त्वां ब्रवीमि कुरु मे वचः ।
अनुज्ञां लभतां राजा मा वृथेह मरिष्यति ॥४॥
4. ahamapyetadeva tvāṁ bravīmi kuru me vacaḥ ,
anujñāṁ labhatāṁ rājā mā vṛtheha mariṣyati.
4. aham api etat eva tvām bravīmi kuru me vacaḥ
anujñām labhatām rājā mā vṛthā iha mariṣyati
4. aham api etat eva tvām bravīmi me vacaḥ kuru
rājā anujñām labhatām mā iha vṛthā mariṣyati
4. I also say this very thing to you: please heed my words. Let the king obtain permission, so that he may not die here in vain.
राजर्षीणां पुराणानामनुयातु गतिं नृपः ।
राजर्षीणां हि सर्वेषामन्ते वनमुपाश्रयः ॥५॥
5. rājarṣīṇāṁ purāṇānāmanuyātu gatiṁ nṛpaḥ ,
rājarṣīṇāṁ hi sarveṣāmante vanamupāśrayaḥ.
5. rājarṣīṇām purāṇānām anuyātu gatim nṛpaḥ
rājarṣīṇām hi sarveṣām ante vanam upāśrayaḥ
5. nṛpaḥ purāṇānām rājarṣīṇām gatim anuyātu hi
sarveṣām rājarṣīṇām ante vanam upāśrayaḥ
5. Let the king follow the path of the ancient royal sages (rājarṣis). For indeed, for all royal sages, the forest is the ultimate refuge (upāśraya).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः स तदा राजा व्यासेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ।
प्रत्युवाच महातेजा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥६॥
6. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ sa tadā rājā vyāsenādbhutakarmaṇā ,
pratyuvāca mahātejā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
6. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca iti uktaḥ saḥ tadā rājā vyāsena
adbhutakarmaṇā pratyuvāca mahātejāḥ dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
6. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tadā adbhutakarmaṇā vyāsena iti uktaḥ
saḥ mahātejāḥ dharmarājaḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ pratyuvāca
6. Vaiśampaayana said: Then, the glorious King Yudhiṣṭhira, the upholder of natural law (dharma), thus addressed by Vyāsa, who performed wondrous deeds, replied.
भगवानेव नो मान्यो भगवानेव नो गुरुः ।
भगवानस्य राज्यस्य कुलस्य च परायणम् ॥७॥
7. bhagavāneva no mānyo bhagavāneva no guruḥ ,
bhagavānasya rājyasya kulasya ca parāyaṇam.
7. bhagavān eva naḥ mānyaḥ bhagavān eva naḥ guruḥ
bhagavān asya rājyasya kulasya ca parāyaṇam
7. bhagavān eva naḥ mānyaḥ bhagavān eva naḥ guruḥ
bhagavān asya rājyasya kulasya ca parāyaṇam
7. Indeed, the venerable one is our object of reverence; indeed, the venerable one is our spiritual teacher (guru). The venerable one is the ultimate support of this kingdom and of this family.
अहं तु पुत्रो भगवान्पिता राजा गुरुश्च मे ।
निदेशवर्ती च पितुः पुत्रो भवति धर्मतः ॥८॥
8. ahaṁ tu putro bhagavānpitā rājā guruśca me ,
nideśavartī ca pituḥ putro bhavati dharmataḥ.
8. aham tu putraḥ bhagavān pitā rājā guruḥ ca me
nideśavartī ca pituḥ putraḥ bhavati dharmataḥ
8. aham tu putraḥ bhagavān me pitā rājā guruḥ ca
putraḥ ca pituḥ nideśavartī dharmataḥ bhavati
8. But I am a son, and the venerable one (Bhagavān) is my father, my king, and my spiritual teacher (guru). And a son, according to natural law (dharma), must always be obedient to his father.
इत्युक्तः स तु तं प्राह व्यासो धर्मभृतां वरः ।
युधिष्ठिरं महातेजाः पुनरेव विशां पते ॥९॥
9. ityuktaḥ sa tu taṁ prāha vyāso dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ mahātejāḥ punareva viśāṁ pate.
9. iti uktaḥ saḥ tu tam prāha vyāsaḥ dharmabhṛtām
varaḥ yudhiṣṭhiram mahātejāḥ punaḥ eva viśām pate
9. iti uktaḥ saḥ tu mahātejāḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
vyāsaḥ tam yudhiṣṭhiram viśām pate punaḥ eva prāha
9. Having been thus addressed, that glorious Vyāsa, the foremost among the upholders of natural law (dharma), then spoke again to him, Yudhiṣṭhira, O lord of men.
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि भारत ।
राजायं वृद्धतां प्राप्तः प्रमाणे परमे स्थितः ॥१०॥
10. evametanmahābāho yathā vadasi bhārata ,
rājāyaṁ vṛddhatāṁ prāptaḥ pramāṇe parame sthitaḥ.
10. evam etat mahābāho yathā vadasi bhārata | rājā
ayam vṛddhatām prāptaḥ pramāṇe parame sthitaḥ
10. O mahābāho,
O bhārata,
etat evam yathā vadasi.
ayam rājā vṛddhatām prāptaḥ (ca) parame pramāṇe sthitaḥ.
10. O mighty-armed one (Mahābāho), O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), this is indeed as you say. This king has attained old age and is resolute in his pursuit of the ultimate truth.
सोऽयं मयाभ्यनुज्ञातस्त्वया च पृथिवीपते ।
करोतु स्वमभिप्रायं मास्य विघ्नकरो भव ॥११॥
11. so'yaṁ mayābhyanujñātastvayā ca pṛthivīpate ,
karotu svamabhiprāyaṁ māsya vighnakaro bhava.
11. saḥ ayam mayā abhyanujñātaḥ tvayā ca pṛthivīpate
| karotu svam abhiprāyam mā asya vighnakaraḥ bhava
11. O pṛthivīpate,
saḥ ayam,
mayā ca tvayā abhyanujñātaḥ,
svam abhiprāyam karotu.
mā asya vighnakaraḥ bhava.
11. Let him, having been permitted by me and by you, O lord of the earth, carry out his own intention. Do not become an obstacle to him.
एष एव परो धर्मो राजर्षीणां युधिष्ठिर ।
समरे वा भवेन्मृत्युर्वने वा विधिपूर्वकम् ॥१२॥
12. eṣa eva paro dharmo rājarṣīṇāṁ yudhiṣṭhira ,
samare vā bhavenmṛtyurvane vā vidhipūrvakam.
12. eṣaḥ eva paraḥ dharmaḥ rājarṣīṇām yudhiṣṭhira
| samare vā bhavet mṛtyuḥ vane vā vidhipūrvakam
12. O yudhiṣṭhira,
eṣaḥ eva rājarṣīṇām paraḥ dharmaḥ (asti): mṛtyuḥ vā samare bhavet vā vane vidhipūrvakam (bhavet).
12. O Yudhishthira, this indeed is the highest intrinsic nature (dharma) for royal sages: that death should occur either in battle or, properly, in the forest (performing austerities).
पित्रा तु तव राजेन्द्र पाण्डुना पृथिवीक्षिता ।
शिष्यभूतेन राजायं गुरुवत्पर्युपासितः ॥१३॥
13. pitrā tu tava rājendra pāṇḍunā pṛthivīkṣitā ,
śiṣyabhūtena rājāyaṁ guruvatparyupāsitaḥ.
13. pitrā tu tava rājendra pāṇḍunā pṛthivīkṣitā
| śiṣyabhūtena rājā ayam guruvat paryupāsitaḥ
13. O rājendra,
tu tava pitrā pāṇḍunā pṛthivīkṣitā śiṣyabhūtena ayam rājā guruvat paryupāsitaḥ.
13. However, O king of kings, this king was revered like a preceptor (guru) by your father Pāṇḍu, the protector of the earth, who acted as his disciple.
क्रतुभिर्दक्षिणावद्भिरन्नपर्वतशोभितैः ।
महद्भिरिष्टं भोगाश्च भुक्ताः पुत्राश्च पालिताः ॥१४॥
14. kratubhirdakṣiṇāvadbhirannaparvataśobhitaiḥ ,
mahadbhiriṣṭaṁ bhogāśca bhuktāḥ putrāśca pālitāḥ.
14. kratubhiḥ dakṣiṇāvadbhiḥ annaparvataśobhitaiḥ
mahadbhiḥ iṣṭam bhogāḥ ca bhuktāḥ putrāḥ ca pālitāḥ
14. mahadbhiḥ dakṣiṇāvadbhiḥ annaparvataśobhitaiḥ
kratubhiḥ iṣṭam; ca bhogāḥ bhuktāḥ; ca putrāḥ pālitāḥ
14. Great Vedic rituals (kratu) with abundant gifts (dakṣiṇā) and adorned with mountains of food were performed. Pleasures were enjoyed, and sons were protected.
पुत्रसंस्थं च विपुलं राज्यं विप्रोषिते त्वयि ।
त्रयोदशसमा भुक्तं दत्तं च विविधं वसु ॥१५॥
15. putrasaṁsthaṁ ca vipulaṁ rājyaṁ viproṣite tvayi ,
trayodaśasamā bhuktaṁ dattaṁ ca vividhaṁ vasu.
15. putrasaṃstham ca vipulam rājyam viproṣite tvayi
trayodaśasamā bhuktam dattam ca vividham vasu
15. tvayi viproṣite ca putrasaṃstham vipulam rājyam
trayodaśasamā bhuktam; ca vividham vasu dattam
15. When you were absent, the vast kingdom, which was established for your sons, was enjoyed for thirteen years. Various kinds of wealth were also given.
त्वया चायं नरव्याघ्र गुरुशुश्रूषया नृपः ।
आराधितः सभृत्येन गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥१६॥
16. tvayā cāyaṁ naravyāghra guruśuśrūṣayā nṛpaḥ ,
ārādhitaḥ sabhṛtyena gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī.
16. tvayā ca ayam naravyāghra guruśuśrūṣayā nṛpaḥ
ārādhitaḥ sabhṛtyena gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī
16. naravyāghra,
ayam nṛpaḥ ca yaśasvinī gāndhārī ca tvayā sabhṛtyena guruśuśrūṣayā ārādhitaḥ
16. O tiger among men (naravyāghra), this king, along with the illustrious Gāndhārī, was served by you and your servants through your devotion to elders (guru).
अनुजानीहि पितरं समयोऽस्य तपोविधौ ।
न मन्युर्विद्यते चास्य सुसूक्ष्मोऽपि युधिष्ठिर ॥१७॥
17. anujānīhi pitaraṁ samayo'sya tapovidhau ,
na manyurvidyate cāsya susūkṣmo'pi yudhiṣṭhira.
17. anujānīhi pitaram samayaḥ asya tapovidhau na
manyuḥ vidyate ca asya susūkṣmaḥ api yudhiṣṭhira
17. yudhiṣṭhira,
pitaram anujānīhi; asya tapovidhau samayaḥ; ca asya susūkṣmaḥ api manyuḥ na vidyate
17. O Yudhiṣṭhira, allow your father to go, for this is the time for him to undertake austerities (tapas). Not even the slightest anger (manyu) exists in him.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनमनुज्ञाप्य च पार्थिवम् ।
तथास्त्विति च तेनोक्तः कौन्तेयेन ययौ वनम् ॥१८॥
18. etāvaduktvā vacanamanujñāpya ca pārthivam ,
tathāstviti ca tenoktaḥ kaunteyena yayau vanam.
18. etāvat uktvā vacanam anujñāpya ca pārthivam tathā
astu iti ca tena uktaḥ kaunteyena yayau vanam
18. kaunteyena etāvat vacanam uktvā ca pārthivam
anujñāpya ca tena tathā astu iti uktaḥ vanam yayau
18. After speaking these words and obtaining the king's consent, Kunti's son, having been told "So be it" by him, departed for the forest.
गते भगवति व्यासे राजा पाण्डुसुतस्ततः ।
प्रोवाच पितरं वृद्धं मन्दं मन्दमिवानतः ॥१९॥
19. gate bhagavati vyāse rājā pāṇḍusutastataḥ ,
provāca pitaraṁ vṛddhaṁ mandaṁ mandamivānataḥ.
19. gate bhagavati vyāse rājā pāṇḍusutaḥ tataḥ
provāca pitaram vṛddham mandam mandam iva ānataḥ
19. bhagavati vyāse gate tataḥ rājā pāṇḍusutaḥ
vṛddham pitaram mandam mandam iva ānataḥ provāca
19. After the venerable (Bhagavan) Vyāsa had departed, King Pāṇḍu's son then spoke to his aged father, humbly and gently, as if with bowed head.
यदाह भगवान्व्यासो यच्चापि भवतो मतम् ।
यदाह च महेष्वासः कृपो विदुर एव च ॥२०॥
20. yadāha bhagavānvyāso yaccāpi bhavato matam ,
yadāha ca maheṣvāsaḥ kṛpo vidura eva ca.
20. yat āha bhagavān vyāsaḥ yat ca api bhavataḥ
matam yat āha ca mahāiṣvāsaḥ kṛpaḥ viduraḥ eva ca
20. bhagavān vyāsaḥ yat āha ca bhavataḥ api yat
matam ca mahāiṣvāsaḥ kṛpaḥ viduraḥ eva ca yat āha
20. Whatever the venerable (Bhagavan) Vyāsa has stated, and whatever is also your view, and whatever the great archer Kṛpa and Vidura have also said...
युयुत्सुः संजयश्चैव तत्कर्तास्म्यहमञ्जसा ।
सर्वे ह्येतेऽनुमान्या मे कुलस्यास्य हितैषिणः ॥२१॥
21. yuyutsuḥ saṁjayaścaiva tatkartāsmyahamañjasā ,
sarve hyete'numānyā me kulasyāsya hitaiṣiṇaḥ.
21. yuyutsuḥ sañjayaḥ ca eva tat kartā asmi aham añjasā
sarve hi ete anumānyā me kulasya asya hitaiṣiṇaḥ
21. yuyutsuḥ sañjayaḥ ca eva tat aham añjasā kartā asmi
hi ete sarve me anumānyā asya kulasya hitaiṣiṇaḥ
21. Whatever Yuyutsu and Sañjaya also say, I shall truly carry that out. For all of them are to be honored by me, as they are well-wishers of this lineage (kula).
इदं तु याचे नृपते त्वामहं शिरसा नतः ।
क्रियतां तावदाहारस्ततो गच्छाश्रमं प्रति ॥२२॥
22. idaṁ tu yāce nṛpate tvāmahaṁ śirasā nataḥ ,
kriyatāṁ tāvadāhārastato gacchāśramaṁ prati.
22. idam tu yāce nṛpate tvām aham śirasā nataḥ |
kriyatām tāvat āhāraḥ tataḥ gaccha āśramam prati
22. nṛpate aham śirasā nataḥ tvām idam tu yāce
tāvat āhāraḥ kriyatām tataḥ āśramam prati gaccha
22. O king, I bow my head and make this request of you: please take your meal first, and then go to the hermitage.
