जनमेजय उवाच ।
कोऽसौ नकुलरूपेण शिरसा काञ्चनेन वै ।
प्राह मानुषवद्वाचमेतत्पृष्टो वदस्व मे ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
ko'sau nakularūpeṇa śirasā kāñcanena vai ,
prāha mānuṣavadvācametatpṛṣṭo vadasva me.

1. Janamejaya asked: "Who is this one who, in the form of a mongoose with a golden head, spoke words like a human? Please tell me this when I ask."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतत्पूर्वं न पृष्टोऽहं न चास्माभिः प्रभाषितम् ।
श्रूयतां नकुलो योऽसौ यथा वागस्य मानुषी ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etatpūrvaṁ na pṛṣṭo'haṁ na cāsmābhiḥ prabhāṣitam ,
śrūyatāṁ nakulo yo'sau yathā vāgasya mānuṣī.
2. vaiśampāyana uvāca | etat pūrvam
na pṛṣṭaḥ aham na ca asmābhiḥ
prabhāṣitam | śrūyatām nakulaḥ
yaḥ asau yathā vāk asya mānuṣī
2. vaiśampāyana uvāca aham etat pūrvam na pṛṣṭaḥ ca asmābhiḥ na prabhāṣitam yaḥ asau nakulaḥ,
asya vāk yathā mānuṣī (asti),
(etat) śrūyatām
2. Vaiśampāyana said: "I have not been asked this before, nor has this matter been discussed by us. Listen now to how the mongoose's speech is human-like."
श्राद्धं संकल्पयामास जमदग्निः पुरा किल ।
होमधेनुस्तमागाच्च स्वयं चापि दुदोह ताम् ॥३॥
3. śrāddhaṁ saṁkalpayāmāsa jamadagniḥ purā kila ,
homadhenustamāgācca svayaṁ cāpi dudoha tām.
3. śrāddham saṅkalpayāmāsa jamadagniḥ purā kila |
homadhenuḥ tam āgāt ca svayam ca api dudoha tām
3. purā kila jamadagniḥ śrāddham saṅkalpayāmāsa
homadhenuḥ tam āgāt ca svayam api tām dudoha
3. Long ago, the sage Jamadagni indeed performed a śrāddha ritual. A ritual cow (homadhenu) came to him, and he himself milked her.
तत्क्षीरं स्थापयामास नवे भाण्डे दृढे शुचौ ।
तच्च क्रोधः स्वरूपेण पिठरं पर्यवर्तयत् ॥४॥
4. tatkṣīraṁ sthāpayāmāsa nave bhāṇḍe dṛḍhe śucau ,
tacca krodhaḥ svarūpeṇa piṭharaṁ paryavartayat.
4. tat kṣīram sthāpayāmāsa nave bhāṇḍe dṛḍhe śucau
| tat ca krodhaḥ svarūpeṇa piṭharam paryavartayat
4. (saḥ) tat kṣīram nave dṛḍhe śucau bhāṇḍe sthāpayāmāsa
ca krodhaḥ svarūpeṇa tat piṭharam paryavartayat
4. He placed that milk in a new, strong, and clean vessel. And anger, in its own form, overturned that pot.
जिज्ञासुस्तमृषिश्रेष्ठं किं कुर्याद्विप्रिये कृते ।
इति संचिन्त्य दुर्मेधा धर्षयामास तत्पयः ॥५॥
5. jijñāsustamṛṣiśreṣṭhaṁ kiṁ kuryādvipriye kṛte ,
iti saṁcintya durmedhā dharṣayāmāsa tatpayaḥ.
5. jijñāsuḥ tam ṛṣiśreṣṭham kim kuryāt vipriye kṛte
iti saṃcintya durmedhāḥ dharṣayāmāsa tat payaḥ
5. jijñāsuḥ durmedhāḥ,
iti saṃcintya (kim kuryāt vipriye kṛte tam ṛṣiśreṣṭham),
tat payaḥ dharṣayāmāsa.
5. The one desirous of knowing pondered, 'What would the best of sages do if an unpleasant act were committed?' Thus reflecting, the dull-witted one violated his sacred offering.
तमाज्ञाय मुनिः क्रोधं नैवास्य चुकुपे ततः ।
स तु क्रोधस्तमाहेदं प्राञ्जलिर्मूर्तिमान्स्थितः ॥६॥
6. tamājñāya muniḥ krodhaṁ naivāsya cukupe tataḥ ,
sa tu krodhastamāhedaṁ prāñjalirmūrtimānsthitaḥ.
6. tam ājñāya muniḥ krodham na eva asya cukūpe tataḥ saḥ
tu krodhaḥ tam āha idam prāñjaliḥ mūrtimān sthitaḥ
6. muniḥ tam krodham ājñāya asya na eva cukūpe.
tataḥ tu saḥ krodhaḥ mūrtimān prāñjaliḥ sthitaḥ tam idam āha.
6. Having recognized the anger (krodha), the sage (muni) was indeed not enraged by it. Then, that anger (krodha) itself, standing embodied with folded hands, said this to him.
जितोऽस्मीति भृगुश्रेष्ठ भृगवो ह्यतिरोषणाः ।
लोके मिथ्याप्रवादोऽयं यत्त्वयास्मि पराजितः ॥७॥
7. jito'smīti bhṛguśreṣṭha bhṛgavo hyatiroṣaṇāḥ ,
loke mithyāpravādo'yaṁ yattvayāsmi parājitaḥ.
7. jitaḥ asmi iti bhṛguśreṣṭha bhṛgavaḥ hi atiroṣaṇāḥ
loke mithyāpravādaḥ ayam yat tvayā asmi parājitaḥ
7. bhṛguśreṣṭha,
(aham) jitaḥ asmi iti.
hi bhṛgavaḥ atiroṣaṇāḥ.
ayam loke mithyāpravādaḥ yat tvayā asmi parājitaḥ.
7. 'I am conquered!' (said personified anger). 'O best of Bhrigus! Indeed, the Bhrigus are exceedingly wrathful. This popular notion in the world - that I have been defeated by you - is untrue.'
सोऽहं त्वयि स्थितो ह्यद्य क्षमावति महात्मनि ।
बिभेमि तपसः साधो प्रसादं कुरु मे विभो ॥८॥
8. so'haṁ tvayi sthito hyadya kṣamāvati mahātmani ,
bibhemi tapasaḥ sādho prasādaṁ kuru me vibho.
8. saḥ aham tvayi sthitaḥ hi adya kṣamāvati mahātmani
bibhemi tapasaḥ sādho prasādam kuru me vibho
8. saḥ aham adya tvayi kṣamāvati mahātmani sthitaḥ hi.
sādho vibho,
tapasaḥ bibhemi,
me prasādam kuru.
8. I (personified anger) am indeed present in you today, O forgiving and great-souled one (mahātman). I fear your spiritual power (tapas), O virtuous one. Therefore, O Lord, please grant me your grace.
जमदग्निरुवाच ।
साक्षाद्दृष्टोऽसि मे क्रोध गच्छ त्वं विगतज्वरः ।
न ममापकृतं तेऽद्य न मन्युर्विद्यते मम ॥९॥
9. jamadagniruvāca ,
sākṣāddṛṣṭo'si me krodha gaccha tvaṁ vigatajvaraḥ ,
na mamāpakṛtaṁ te'dya na manyurvidyate mama.
9. jamadagniḥ uvāca sākṣāt dṛṣṭaḥ asi me krodha gaccha tvam
vigatajvaraḥ na mama apakṛtam te adya na manyuḥ vidyate mama
9. jamadagniḥ uvāca he krodha tvam
me sākṣāt dṛṣṭaḥ asi tvam
vigatajvaraḥ gaccha adya te mama
apakṛtam na mama manyuḥ na vidyate
9. Jamadagni said: "O Anger, I have directly perceived you. Depart now, free from agitation. No wrong has been committed by you against me today, and I hold no resentment."
यानुद्दिश्य तु संकल्पः पयसोऽस्य कृतो मया ।
पितरस्ते महाभागास्तेभ्यो बुध्यस्व गम्यताम् ॥१०॥
10. yānuddiśya tu saṁkalpaḥ payaso'sya kṛto mayā ,
pitaraste mahābhāgāstebhyo budhyasva gamyatām.
10. yān uddiśya tu saṃkalpaḥ payasaḥ asya kṛtaḥ mayā
pitaraḥ te mahābhāgāḥ tebhyaḥ budhyasva gamyatām
10. tu mayā yān uddiśya asya payasaḥ saṃkalpaḥ kṛtaḥ te
mahābhāgāḥ pitaraḥ (santi) tebhyaḥ budhyasva (tvaṃ) gamyatām
10. Indeed, those exalted ancestors (pitaras) are the ones for whom I made this solemn resolve (saṃkalpa) with this water. Understand (this truth regarding) them, and depart!
इत्युक्तो जातसंत्रासः स तत्रान्तरधीयत ।
पितॄणामभिषङ्गात्तु नकुलत्वमुपागतः ॥११॥
11. ityukto jātasaṁtrāsaḥ sa tatrāntaradhīyata ,
pitṝṇāmabhiṣaṅgāttu nakulatvamupāgataḥ.
11. iti uktaḥ jātasamtrāsaḥ saḥ tatra antaradhīyata
pitṝṇām abhiṣaṅgāt tu nakulatvam upāgataḥ
11. iti uktaḥ saḥ jātasamtrāsaḥ tatra antaradhīyata
tu pitṝṇām abhiṣaṅgāt nakulatvam upāgataḥ
11. Thus addressed, he (Anger) became greatly frightened and vanished from that place. However, due to the powerful influence related to the ancestors (pitaras), he assumed the form of a mongoose.
स तान्प्रसादयामास शापस्यान्तो भवेदिति ।
तैश्चाप्युक्तो यदा धर्मं क्षेप्स्यसे मोक्ष्यसे तदा ॥१२॥
12. sa tānprasādayāmāsa śāpasyānto bhavediti ,
taiścāpyukto yadā dharmaṁ kṣepsyase mokṣyase tadā.
12. saḥ tān prasādayāmāsa śāpasya antaḥ bhavet iti taiḥ
ca api uktaḥ yadā dharmam kṣepsyase mokṣyase tadā
12. saḥ tān prasādayāmāsa śāpasya antaḥ bhavet iti ca taiḥ api
uktaḥ tadā (tvam) yadā dharmam kṣepsyase (tadā tvam) mokṣyase
12. He (the mongoose) then propitiated them (the ancestors), hoping for an end to his curse. And they, in turn, told him: 'You will achieve liberation (mokṣa) when you cast away your natural law (dharma).'
तैश्चोक्तो यज्ञियान्देशान्धर्मारण्यानि चैव ह ।
जुगुप्सन्परिधावन्स यज्ञं तं समुपासदत् ॥१३॥
13. taiścokto yajñiyāndeśāndharmāraṇyāni caiva ha ,
jugupsanparidhāvansa yajñaṁ taṁ samupāsadat.
13. taiḥ ca uktaḥ yajñiyān deśān dharma-araṇyāni ca eva
ha jugupsan paridhāvan saḥ yajñam tam samupāsadat
13. taiḥ uktaḥ yajñiyān deśān dharma-araṇyāni ca eva
ha jugupsan paridhāvan saḥ tam yajñam samupāsadat
13. Advised by them about the regions suitable for a (Vedic ritual) and the sacred forests (dharma-āraṇya), he approached that (Vedic ritual) while harboring disgust and wandering aimlessly.
धर्मपुत्रमथाक्षिप्य सक्तुप्रस्थेन तेन सः ।
मुक्तः शापात्ततः क्रोधो धर्मो ह्यासीद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥१४॥
14. dharmaputramathākṣipya saktuprasthena tena saḥ ,
muktaḥ śāpāttataḥ krodho dharmo hyāsīdyudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
14. dharma-putram atha ākṣipya saktu-prasthena tena saḥ
muktaḥ śāpāt tataḥ krodhaḥ dharmaḥ hi āsīt yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
14. atha saktu-prasthena tena dharma-putram ākṣipya saḥ
śāpāt muktaḥ tataḥ hi krodhaḥ dharmaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ āsīt
14. Then, after he had challenged Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of (Dharma), by referring to that measure of flour, he was released from a curse. For indeed, the angry (Dharma) was Yudhiṣṭhira.
एवमेतत्तदा वृत्तं तस्य यज्ञे महात्मनः ।
पश्यतां चापि नस्तत्र नकुलोऽन्तर्हितस्तदा ॥१५॥
15. evametattadā vṛttaṁ tasya yajñe mahātmanaḥ ,
paśyatāṁ cāpi nastatra nakulo'ntarhitastadā.
15. evam etat tadā vṛttam tasya yajñe mahātmanaḥ
paśyatām ca api naḥ tatra nakulaḥ antarhitaḥ tadā
15. evam etat tadā tasya mahātmanaḥ yajñe vṛttam ca
api naḥ paśyatām tatra nakulaḥ tadā antarhitaḥ
15. Thus, this indeed occurred then at the (Vedic ritual) of that great-souled (ātman) one. And as we watched there, the mongoose then disappeared.
