मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
यदा स्कन्देन मातॄणामेवमेतत्प्रियं कृतम् ।
अथैनमब्रवीत्स्वाहा मम पुत्रस्त्वमौरसः ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
yadā skandena mātṝṇāmevametatpriyaṁ kṛtam ,
athainamabravītsvāhā mama putrastvamaurasaḥ.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca yadā skandena mātṝṇām evam etat priyam
kṛtam atha enam abravīt svāhā mama putraḥ tvam aurasaḥ
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: When Skanda had thus performed this pleasing act for the mothers, then Svāhā said to him, "You are my legitimate son."
इच्छाम्यहं त्वया दत्तां प्रीतिं परमदुर्लभाम् ।
तामब्रवीत्ततः स्कन्दः प्रीतिमिच्छसि कीदृशीम् ॥२॥
2. icchāmyahaṁ tvayā dattāṁ prītiṁ paramadurlabhām ,
tāmabravīttataḥ skandaḥ prītimicchasi kīdṛśīm.
2. icchāmi aham tvayā dattām prītim paramadur labhām
tām abravīt tataḥ skandaḥ prītim icchasi kīdṛśīm
2. "I desire from you a very rare favor (prīti)," [Svāhā said]. Skanda then said to her, "What kind of favor do you desire?"
स्वाहोवाच ।
दक्षस्याहं प्रिया कन्या स्वाहा नाम महाभुज ।
बाल्यात्प्रभृति नित्यं च जातकामा हुताशने ॥३॥
3. svāhovāca ,
dakṣasyāhaṁ priyā kanyā svāhā nāma mahābhuja ,
bālyātprabhṛti nityaṁ ca jātakāmā hutāśane.
3. svāhā uvāca dakṣasya aham priyā kanyā svāhā nāma
mahā-bhuja bālyāt prabhṛti nityam ca jāta-kāmā hutāśane
3. Svāhā said: "O mighty-armed one, I am Svāhā by name, the dear daughter of Dakṣa. From childhood onwards, I have always been desirous of Agni (hutāśana)."
न च मां कामिनीं पुत्र सम्यग्जानाति पावकः ।
इच्छामि शाश्वतं वासं वस्तुं पुत्र सहाग्निना ॥४॥
4. na ca māṁ kāminīṁ putra samyagjānāti pāvakaḥ ,
icchāmi śāśvataṁ vāsaṁ vastuṁ putra sahāgninā.
4. na ca mām kāminīm putra samyak jānāti pāvakaḥ
icchāmi śāśvatam vāsam vastum putra saha agninā
4. My son, Agni does not properly recognize me as a desirous woman. Therefore, son, I desire to dwell eternally with Agni.
स्कन्द उवाच ।
हव्यं कव्यं च यत्किंचिद्द्विजा मन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् ।
होष्यन्त्यग्नौ सदा देवि स्वाहेत्युक्त्वा समुद्यतम् ॥५॥
5. skanda uvāca ,
havyaṁ kavyaṁ ca yatkiṁciddvijā mantrapuraskṛtam ,
hoṣyantyagnau sadā devi svāhetyuktvā samudyatam.
5. skandaḥ uvāca havyam kavyam ca yatkiñcit dvijā mantrapuraskṛtam
hoṣyanti agnau sadā devi svāhā iti uktvā samudyatam
5. Skanda said: 'O goddess, whatever prepared oblations (havya) for the gods and offerings (kavya) for the ancestors, consecrated by sacred utterances (mantras), Brahmins (dvija) will always offer into Agni, uttering "Svāhā".'
अद्य प्रभृति दास्यन्ति सुवृत्ताः सत्पथे स्थिताः ।
एवमग्निस्त्वया सार्धं सदा वत्स्यति शोभने ॥६॥
6. adya prabhṛti dāsyanti suvṛttāḥ satpathe sthitāḥ ,
evamagnistvayā sārdhaṁ sadā vatsyati śobhane.
6. adya prabhṛti dāsyanti suvṛttāḥ satpathe sthitāḥ
evam agniḥ tvayā sārdham sadā vatsyati śobhane
6. From this day forward, virtuous people who are established on the right path will make offerings. In this way, Agni will always dwell together with you, O beautiful one.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमुक्ता ततः स्वाहा तुष्टा स्कन्देन पूजिता ।
पावकेन समायुक्ता भर्त्रा स्कन्दमपूजयत् ॥७॥
7. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evamuktā tataḥ svāhā tuṣṭā skandena pūjitā ,
pāvakena samāyuktā bhartrā skandamapūjayat.
7. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca evam uktā tataḥ svāhā tuṣṭā skandena
pūjitā pāvakena samāyuktā bhartrā skandam apūjayat
7. Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'Thus spoken to, Svāhā, pleased and honored by Skanda, became united with Agni (pāvaka), her husband, and then worshipped Skanda.'
ततो ब्रह्मा महासेनं प्रजापतिरथाब्रवीत् ।
अभिगच्छ महादेवं पितरं त्रिपुरार्दनम् ॥८॥
8. tato brahmā mahāsenaṁ prajāpatirathābravīt ,
abhigaccha mahādevaṁ pitaraṁ tripurārdanam.
8. tataḥ brahmā mahāsenam prajāpatiḥ atha abravīt
abhigaccha mahādevam pitaram tripurārdanam
8. Then Brahmā, the lord of creation (prajāpati), said to Mahāsena: "Go to Mahādeva, your father, the destroyer of the three cities."
रुद्रेणाग्निं समाविश्य स्वाहामाविश्य चोमया ।
हितार्थं सर्वलोकानां जातस्त्वमपराजितः ॥९॥
9. rudreṇāgniṁ samāviśya svāhāmāviśya comayā ,
hitārthaṁ sarvalokānāṁ jātastvamaparājitaḥ.
9. rudreṇa agnim samāviśya svāhām āviśya ca umayā
hitārtham sarvalokānām jātaḥ tvam aparājitaḥ
9. Through Rudra having entered Agni and Umā having entered Svāhā, you were born unconquered for the welfare of all worlds.
उमायोन्यां च रुद्रेण शुक्रं सिक्तं महात्मना ।
आस्ते गिरौ निपतितं मिञ्जिकामिञ्जिकं यतः ॥१०॥
10. umāyonyāṁ ca rudreṇa śukraṁ siktaṁ mahātmanā ,
āste girau nipatitaṁ miñjikāmiñjikaṁ yataḥ.
10. umāyonyām ca rudreṇa śukram siktam mahātmanā
āste girau nipatitam miñjikāmiñjikam yataḥ
10. And the seed (śukra), deposited by the great-souled (mahātman) Rudra into Umā's womb (yoni), has fallen onto the mountain, scattered like minjika-minjika, from which...
संभूतं लोहितोदे तु शुक्रशेषमवापतत् ।
सूर्यरश्मिषु चाप्यन्यदन्यच्चैवापतद्भुवि ।
आसक्तमन्यद्वृक्षेषु तदेवं पञ्चधापतत् ॥११॥
11. saṁbhūtaṁ lohitode tu śukraśeṣamavāpatat ,
sūryaraśmiṣu cāpyanyadanyaccaivāpatadbhuvi ,
āsaktamanyadvṛkṣeṣu tadevaṁ pañcadhāpatat.
11. saṃbhūtam lohitode tu śukraśeṣam
avāpatat sūryaraśmiṣu ca api anyat anyat
ca eva avāpatat bhuvi āsaktam anyat
vṛkṣeṣu tat evam pañcadhā avāpatat
11. The remaining portion of the seed (śukra), indeed, fell into the Lohitoda lake. Furthermore, another portion fell upon the sun's rays, and yet another descended onto the earth. Still another clung to the trees. Thus, it fell in five ways.
त एते विविधाकारा गणा ज्ञेया मनीषिभिः ।
तव पारिषदा घोरा य एते पिशिताशनाः ॥१२॥
12. ta ete vividhākārā gaṇā jñeyā manīṣibhiḥ ,
tava pāriṣadā ghorā ya ete piśitāśanāḥ.
12. te ete vividhākārāḥ gaṇāḥ jñeyāḥ manīṣibhiḥ
tava pāriṣadāḥ ghorāḥ ye ete piśitāśanāḥ
12. The wise should know that these hosts of various forms are your terrifying attendants, who consume flesh.
एवमस्त्विति चाप्युक्त्वा महासेनो महेश्वरम् ।
अपूजयदमेयात्मा पितरं पितृवत्सलः ॥१३॥
13. evamastviti cāpyuktvā mahāseno maheśvaram ,
apūjayadameyātmā pitaraṁ pitṛvatsalaḥ.
13. evam astu iti ca api uktvā mahāsenaḥ maheśvaram
apūjayat ameyātmā pitaram pitṛvatsalaḥ
13. And, having said, "So be it," Mahāsena, whose nature (ātman) is immeasurable and who is devoted to his father, worshipped his father Maheśvara.
अर्कपुष्पैस्तु ते पञ्च गणाः पूज्या धनार्थिभिः ।
व्याधिप्रशमनार्थं च तेषां पूजां समाचरेत् ॥१४॥
14. arkapuṣpaistu te pañca gaṇāḥ pūjyā dhanārthibhiḥ ,
vyādhipraśamanārthaṁ ca teṣāṁ pūjāṁ samācaret.
14. arkapuṣpaiḥ tu te pañca gaṇāḥ pūjyāḥ dhanārthibhiḥ
vyādhipraśamanārtham ca teṣām pūjām samācaret
14. Indeed, those five hosts should be worshipped with arka flowers by those desiring wealth. And one should perform their worship for the purpose of alleviating diseases.
मिञ्जिकामिञ्जिकं चैव मिथुनं रुद्रसंभवम् ।
नमस्कार्यं सदैवेह बालानां हितमिच्छता ॥१५॥
15. miñjikāmiñjikaṁ caiva mithunaṁ rudrasaṁbhavam ,
namaskāryaṁ sadaiveha bālānāṁ hitamicchatā.
15. miñjikāmiñjikam ca eva mithunam rudrasambhavam
namaskāryam sadā eva iha bālānām hitam icchatā
15. And indeed, the couple Miñjikā and Miñjika, born from Rudra, should always be saluted here by one who desires the welfare of children.
स्त्रियो मानुषमांसादा वृद्धिका नाम नामतः ।
वृक्षेषु जातास्ता देव्यो नमस्कार्याः प्रजार्थिभिः ॥१६॥
16. striyo mānuṣamāṁsādā vṛddhikā nāma nāmataḥ ,
vṛkṣeṣu jātāstā devyo namaskāryāḥ prajārthibhiḥ.
16. striyaḥ mānuṣamāṃsādāḥ vṛddhikā nāma nāmataḥ
vṛkṣeṣu jātāḥ tāḥ devyaḥ namaskāryāḥ prajārthibhiḥ
16. There are goddesses known by the name Vṛddhikā, who consume human flesh. Born in trees, those deities should be venerated by those who seek offspring.
एवमेते पिशाचानामसंख्येया गणाः स्मृताः ।
घण्टायाः सपताकायाः शृणु मे संभवं नृप ॥१७॥
17. evamete piśācānāmasaṁkhyeyā gaṇāḥ smṛtāḥ ,
ghaṇṭāyāḥ sapatākāyāḥ śṛṇu me saṁbhavaṁ nṛpa.
17. evam ete piśācānām asaṃkhyeyāḥ gaṇāḥ smṛtāḥ
ghaṇṭāyāḥ sapatākāyāḥ śṛṇu me saṃbhavam nṛpa
17. Thus, these innumerable hosts of piśācas are known. Now, O king, listen to me about the origin of the bell with its banner.
ऐरावतस्य घण्टे द्वे वैजयन्त्याविति श्रुते ।
गुहस्य ते स्वयं दत्ते शक्रेणानाय्य धीमता ॥१८॥
18. airāvatasya ghaṇṭe dve vaijayantyāviti śrute ,
guhasya te svayaṁ datte śakreṇānāyya dhīmatā.
18. airāvatasya ghaṇṭe dve vaijayantyau iti śrute
guhasya te svayam datte śakreṇa ānāyya dhīmatā
18. The two bells of Airāvata, renowned as Vaijayantīs, were personally given to Guha, after being brought by the intelligent Indra (Śakra).
एका तत्र विशाखस्य घण्टा स्कन्दस्य चापरा ।
पताका कार्त्तिकेयस्य विशाखस्य च लोहिता ॥१९॥
19. ekā tatra viśākhasya ghaṇṭā skandasya cāparā ,
patākā kārttikeyasya viśākhasya ca lohitā.
19. ekā tatra viśākhasya ghaṇṭā skandasya ca aparā
patākā kārttikeyasya viśākhasya ca lohitā
19. One of those bells there belongs to Viśākha, and the other to Skanda. The banner belongs to Kārttikeya, and a red one (banner) to Viśākha.
यानि क्रीडनकान्यस्य देवैर्दत्तानि वै तदा ।
तैरेव रमते देवो महासेनो महाबलः ॥२०॥
20. yāni krīḍanakānyasya devairdattāni vai tadā ,
taireva ramate devo mahāseno mahābalaḥ.
20. yāni krīḍanakāni asya devaiḥ dattāni vai tadā
taiḥ eva ramate devaḥ mahāsenaḥ mahābalaḥ
20. The immensely powerful and mighty god Mahasena plays with those very toys that were given to him by the gods at that time.
स संवृतः पिशाचानां गणैर्देवगणैस्तथा ।
शुशुभे काञ्चने शैले दीप्यमानः श्रिया वृतः ॥२१॥
21. sa saṁvṛtaḥ piśācānāṁ gaṇairdevagaṇaistathā ,
śuśubhe kāñcane śaile dīpyamānaḥ śriyā vṛtaḥ.
21. sa saṃvṛtaḥ piśācānām gaṇaiḥ devagaṇaiḥ tathā
śuśubhe kāñcane śaile dīpyamānaḥ śriyā vṛtaḥ
21. Surrounded by hordes of Pishacas as well as by hosts of gods, he shone splendidly on the golden mountain, radiant and enveloped in glory.
तेन वीरेण शुशुभे स शैलः शुभकाननः ।
आदित्येनेवांशुमता मन्दरश्चारुकन्दरः ॥२२॥
22. tena vīreṇa śuśubhe sa śailaḥ śubhakānanaḥ ,
ādityenevāṁśumatā mandaraścārukandaraḥ.
22. tena vīreṇa śuśubhe sa śailaḥ śubhakananaḥ
ādityena iva aṃśumatā mandaraḥ cārukandaraḥ
22. That mountain, adorned with beautiful forests, shone splendidly because of that hero, just as Mount Mandara, with its lovely caves, appears radiant due to the brilliant sun.
संतानकवनैः फुल्लैः करवीरवनैरपि ।
पारिजातवनैश्चैव जपाशोकवनैस्तथा ॥२३॥
23. saṁtānakavanaiḥ phullaiḥ karavīravanairapi ,
pārijātavanaiścaiva japāśokavanaistathā.
23. saṃtānakavanaiḥ phullaiḥ karavīravanaiḥ api
pārijātavanaiḥ ca eva japāśokavanaiḥ tathā
23. Adorned with blooming Santanaka groves, and also with Karavīra groves, and indeed with Parijāta groves, and similarly with Japā and Aśoka groves.
कदम्बतरुषण्डैश्च दिव्यैर्मृगगणैरपि ।
दिव्यैः पक्षिगणैश्चैव शुशुभे श्वेतपर्वतः ॥२४॥
24. kadambataruṣaṇḍaiśca divyairmṛgagaṇairapi ,
divyaiḥ pakṣigaṇaiścaiva śuśubhe śvetaparvataḥ.
24. kadambataruṣaṇḍaiḥ ca divyaiḥ mṛgagaṇaiḥ api
divyaiḥ pakṣigaṇaiḥ ca eva śuśubhe śvetaparvataḥ
24. The White Mountain (Śvetaparvata) was adorned with clusters of Kadamba trees, and with divine herds of deer, as well as divine flocks of birds.
तत्र देवगणाः सर्वे सर्वे चैव महर्षयः ।
मेघतूर्यरवाश्चैव क्षुब्धोदधिसमस्वनाः ॥२५॥
25. tatra devagaṇāḥ sarve sarve caiva maharṣayaḥ ,
meghatūryaravāścaiva kṣubdhodadhisamasvanāḥ.
25. tatra devagaṇāḥ sarve sarve ca eva maharṣayaḥ
meghatūryaravāḥ ca eva kṣubhdodadhisamasvanāḥ
25. There, all the hosts of gods and all the great sages were present. Their sounds were like the rumbling of thunder-drums and like the roar of a churning ocean.
तत्र दिव्याश्च गन्धर्वा नृत्यन्त्यप्सरसस्तथा ।
हृष्टानां तत्र भूतानां श्रूयते निनदो महान् ॥२६॥
26. tatra divyāśca gandharvā nṛtyantyapsarasastathā ,
hṛṣṭānāṁ tatra bhūtānāṁ śrūyate ninado mahān.
26. tatra divyāḥ ca gandharvāḥ nṛtyanti apsarasaḥ
tathā hṛṣṭānām tatra bhūtānām śrūyate ninadaḥ mahān
26. There, divine Gandharvas and Apsaras dance. A great sound of the rejoicing beings (bhūtas) is heard there.
एवं सेन्द्रं जगत्सर्वं श्वेतपर्वतसंस्थितम् ।
प्रहृष्टं प्रेक्षते स्कन्दं न च ग्लायति दर्शनात् ॥२७॥
27. evaṁ sendraṁ jagatsarvaṁ śvetaparvatasaṁsthitam ,
prahṛṣṭaṁ prekṣate skandaṁ na ca glāyati darśanāt.
27. evam saindram jagat sarvam śvetaparvatasaṃsthitam
prahṛṣṭam prekṣate skandam na ca glāyati darśanāt
27. Thus, the entire world, including Indra, stationed on the White Mountain (Śvetaparvata), greatly rejoices and beholds Skanda, never growing weary of the sight.
