सूत उवाच ।
ततो रजन्यां व्युष्टायां प्रभात उदिते रवौ ।
कद्रूश्च विनता चैव भगिन्यौ ते तपोधन ॥१॥
1. sūta uvāca ,
tato rajanyāṁ vyuṣṭāyāṁ prabhāta udite ravau ,
kadrūśca vinatā caiva bhaginyau te tapodhana.

1. Sūta said: "Then, O ascetic, when the night had passed and the sun had risen at dawn, those two sisters, Kadru and Vinatā - "
1. סוּטַה אמר: הו בעל עוצמה רוחנית, כשהלילה הסתיים והשמש זרחה עם שחר, שתי האחיות, קַדְרוּ ואחותה וִינַטָה,
अमर्षिते सुसंरब्धे दास्ये कृतपणे तदा ।
जग्मतुस्तुरगं द्रष्टुमुच्चैःश्रवसमन्तिकात् ॥२॥
2. amarṣite susaṁrabdhe dāsye kṛtapaṇe tadā ,
jagmatusturagaṁ draṣṭumuccaiḥśravasamantikāt.

jagmatuḥ turagam draṣṭum uccaiḥśravasam antikāt
2. Then, both enraged and greatly agitated, having made a wager regarding servitude, they went to behold the horse Uccaiḥśravas from close by.
2. כשהן מלאות כעס ונסערות מאוד, אחרי שהתערבו ביניהן על עבדות, הלכו באותה שעה לראות מקרוב את הסוס אוּצ׳ְצ׳ְהַיהְשְׁרַוַס.
ददृशाते तदा तत्र समुद्रं निधिमम्भसाम् ।
तिमिंगिलझषाकीर्णं मकरैरावृतं तथा ॥३॥
3. dadṛśāte tadā tatra samudraṁ nidhimambhasām ,
timiṁgilajhaṣākīrṇaṁ makarairāvṛtaṁ tathā.
3. dadṛśāte tadā tatra samudram nidhim ambhasām
timingilajhaṣākīrṇam makaraiḥ āvṛtam tathā
3. At that time, they both saw the ocean there, a vast reservoir of waters, teeming with whales and fish, and also covered with crocodiles.
3. ושם ראו את הים, מאגר המים, גדוש בלווייתנים ובדגים גדולים ומוקף במפלצות ים,
सत्त्वैश्च बहुसाहस्रैर्नानारूपैः समावृतम् ।
उग्रैर्नित्यमनाधृष्यं कूर्मग्राहसमाकुलम् ॥४॥
4. sattvaiśca bahusāhasrairnānārūpaiḥ samāvṛtam ,
ugrairnityamanādhṛṣyaṁ kūrmagrāhasamākulam.
4. sattvaiḥ ca bahusāhasraiḥ nānārūpaiḥ samāvṛtam
ugraiḥ nityam anādhṛṣyam kūrmagrāhasamākulam
4. And it was completely enveloped by many thousands of creatures of diverse forms, (some of them) fierce, making it perpetually unassailable, and agitated with tortoises and alligators.
4. (הים) שמלאים בו אלפי יצורים רבים בצורות שונות, אכזריים ותמיד בלתי אפשרי להתקרב אליו, והומה מצבים ותנינים.
आकरं सर्वरत्नानामालयं वरुणस्य च ।
नागानामालयं रम्यमुत्तमं सरितां पतिम् ॥५॥
5. ākaraṁ sarvaratnānāmālayaṁ varuṇasya ca ,
nāgānāmālayaṁ ramyamuttamaṁ saritāṁ patim.
5. ākaram sarvaratnānām ālayam varuṇasya ca
nāgānām ālayam ramyam uttamam saritām patim
5. (They saw the ocean as) the source of all jewels, the abode of Varuṇa, and the beautiful, supreme dwelling of the Nāgas (serpent deities), the lord of rivers.
5. (הים) מכרה לכל אבני החן ומשכנו של וַרוּנַה, משכן הנחשים, יפה ונעלה, אדון הנהרות.
पातालज्वलनावासमसुराणां च बन्धनम् ।
भयंकरं च सत्त्वानां पयसां निधिमर्णवम् ॥६॥
6. pātālajvalanāvāsamasurāṇāṁ ca bandhanam ,
bhayaṁkaraṁ ca sattvānāṁ payasāṁ nidhimarṇavam.
6. pātālajvalanāvāsam asurāṇām ca bandhanam
bhayaṃkaram ca sattvānām payasām nidhim arṇavam
6. (They saw the ocean as) the dwelling of the fires of Pātāla (the underworld), and the prison for asuras, and a terrifying place for (many) creatures, a great reservoir of waters, truly an ocean.
6. (הים) מקום מושבה של האש הבוערת בעולם התחתון פָּאטָאלַה, כלא האסוּרַה (שונאי האלים), מפחיד את היצורים, אוצר המים, האוקיינוס.
शुभं दिव्यममर्त्यानाममृतस्याकरं परम् ।
अप्रमेयमचिन्त्यं च सुपुण्यजलमद्भुतम् ॥७॥
7. śubhaṁ divyamamartyānāmamṛtasyākaraṁ param ,
aprameyamacintyaṁ ca supuṇyajalamadbhutam.
7. śubham divyam amartyānām amṛtasya ākaram param
aprameyam acintyam ca supuṇyajalam adbhutam
7. (They saw the ocean as) auspicious, divine, the supreme source of nectar for the immortals, immeasurable, inconceivable, and having wonderfully sacred waters.
7. (הים) מבורך ושמימי, מכרה עליון של צוף האלמוות לבני האלמוות, בלתי ניתן למדידה ובלתי נתפס, מימיו קדושים מאוד ונפלאים.
घोरं जलचरारावरौद्रं भैरवनिस्वनम् ।
गम्भीरावर्तकलिलं सर्वभूतभयंकरम् ॥८॥
8. ghoraṁ jalacarārāvaraudraṁ bhairavanisvanam ,
gambhīrāvartakalilaṁ sarvabhūtabhayaṁkaram.
8. ghoram jalacarārāvaraudram bhairavanisvanam
gambhīrāvārtakalilam sarvabhūtabhayaṃkaram
8. It was dreadful, made fierce by the roars of aquatic creatures, with a terrifying sound, murky with deep whirlpools, and terrifying to all beings.
8. (הים) נורא, אדיר בשאגות יצורי המים, מרעיש בקול מבעית, גדוש מערבולות עמוקות ומטיל אימה על כל היצורים.
वेलादोलानिलचलं क्षोभोद्वेगसमुत्थितम् ।
वीचीहस्तैः प्रचलितैर्नृत्यन्तमिव सर्वशः ॥९॥
9. velādolānilacalaṁ kṣobhodvegasamutthitam ,
vīcīhastaiḥ pracalitairnṛtyantamiva sarvaśaḥ.
9. velādolānilacalam kṣobhodvegasamutthitam
vīcīhastaiḥ pracalitaiḥ nṛtyantam iva sarvaśaḥ
9. Swaying and agitated by the winds that move its waves, surging from commotion and turmoil, it appeared as if dancing everywhere with its restless, hand-like waves.
9. (הים) נע כמתנדנד מרוח הגאות והשפל, מתרומם מרוב סערה וגעש, וכאילו רוקד מכל עבר בידי הגלים הנעים.
चन्द्रवृद्धिक्षयवशादुद्वृत्तोर्मिदुरासदम् ।
पाञ्चजन्यस्य जननं रत्नाकरमनुत्तमम् ॥१०॥
10. candravṛddhikṣayavaśādudvṛttormidurāsadam ,
pāñcajanyasya jananaṁ ratnākaramanuttamam.
10. candravṛddhikṣayavaśāt udvṛttormidurāsadam
pāñcajanyasya jananam ratnākaram anuttamam
10. Difficult to approach due to its surging waves, which are controlled by the waxing and waning of the moon, it is the birthplace of Pāñcajanya (Vishnu's conch), the unequalled ocean, a mine of jewels.
10. (הים) שגליו מתרוממים בגלל גדילת הירח ומיעוטו, ואי אפשר להתקרב אליו, מקום לידתה של הקונכייה פָּאנְצ׳ַג׳ַנְיַה, מכרה האבנים היקרות, האוקיינוס שאין נעלה ממנו.
गां विन्दता भगवता गोविन्देनामितौजसा ।
वराहरूपिणा चान्तर्विक्षोभितजलाविलम् ॥११॥
11. gāṁ vindatā bhagavatā govindenāmitaujasā ,
varāharūpiṇā cāntarvikṣobhitajalāvilam.
11. gām vindatā bhagavatā govindena amitaujasā
varāharūpiṇā ca antar vikṣobhitajalāvilam
11. And its inner waters were churned and made turbid by the divine Lord Govinda, of immeasurable might, in his Boar form, when he recovered the Earth.
11. (הים) שמימיו נעכרו מבפנים כשהאל גוֹוִינְדַה (וִישְׁנוּ) בעל העוצמה הבלתי מדודה, שלבש צורת חזיר בר, חיפש בו ומצא את האדמה.
ब्रह्मर्षिणा च तपता वर्षाणां शतमत्रिणा ।
अनासादितगाधं च पातालतलमव्ययम् ॥१२॥
12. brahmarṣiṇā ca tapatā varṣāṇāṁ śatamatriṇā ,
anāsāditagādhaṁ ca pātālatalamavyayam.
12. brahmarṣiṇā ca tapatā varṣāṇām śatam atriṇā
anāsāditagādham ca pātālatalam avyayam
12. And even the brahmin sage Atri, performing austerities for a hundred years, could not fathom its depths, reaching down to the imperishable realm of Pātāla.
12. וגם החוזה אַטְרִי, בְּרַהְמִין נעלה, שתרגל עוצמה רוחנית במשך מאה שנה, לא מצא בו קרקעית, ובתחתית הפָּאטָאלַה שאינה נהרסת.
अध्यात्मयोगनिद्रां च पद्मनाभस्य सेवतः ।
युगादिकालशयनं विष्णोरमिततेजसः ॥१३॥
13. adhyātmayoganidrāṁ ca padmanābhasya sevataḥ ,
yugādikālaśayanaṁ viṣṇoramitatejasaḥ.
13. adhyātmayoganidrām ca padmanābhasya sevatas
yugādikālaśayanam viṣṇoḥ amitatejasaḥ
13. They observed the spiritual yoga-sleep and the cosmic reclining at the beginning of the ages of Padmanābha, of Viṣṇu of immeasurable splendor, who experiences [this state].
13. (הים) שבו משרת פַּדְמַנָאבְּהַא (וִישְׁנוּ) בעל הזוהר הבלתי מדוד את שינת היוגה הפנימית שלו, משכבו של וִישְׁנוּ בראשית התקופה.
वडवामुखदीप्ताग्नेस्तोयहव्यप्रदं शुभम् ।
अगाधपारं विस्तीर्णमप्रमेयं सरित्पतिम् ॥१४॥
14. vaḍavāmukhadīptāgnestoyahavyapradaṁ śubham ,
agādhapāraṁ vistīrṇamaprameyaṁ saritpatim.
14. vaḍavāmukhadiptāgneḥ toyahavyapradam śubham
agādhapāram vistīrṇam aprameyam saritpatim
14. They beheld the auspicious, unfathomable, vast, and immeasurable ocean, the lord of rivers, which offers water as an oblation to the blazing fire of the submarine mouth (Vaḍavāmukha).
14. (הים) טוב, המספק מים כמזון לאש הבוערת של וַדַוָאמוּקְהַא, ללא עומק וללא גבול, רחב ובלתי מדוד, אדון הנהרות.
महानदीभिर्बह्वीभिः स्पर्धयेव सहस्रशः ।
अभिसार्यमाणमनिशं ददृशाते महार्णवम् ॥१५॥
15. mahānadībhirbahvībhiḥ spardhayeva sahasraśaḥ ,
abhisāryamāṇamaniśaṁ dadṛśāte mahārṇavam.
15. mahānadībhiḥ bahvībhiḥ spardhayā iva sahasraśaḥ
abhisāryamāṇam aniśam dadṛśāte mahārṇavam
15. They both saw the great ocean, which was constantly being approached by thousands of numerous great rivers, as if in rivalry.
15. ושתיהן ראו את האוקיינוס הגדול כשהנהרות הגדולות והרבות, באלפיהן, זורמות אליו ללא הפסקה כאילו בתחרות.
गम्भीरं तिमिमकरोग्रसंकुलं तं गर्जन्तं जलचररावरौद्रनादैः ।
विस्तीर्णं ददृशतुरम्बरप्रकाशं तेऽगाधं निधिमुरुमम्भसामनन्तम् ॥१६॥
16. gambhīraṁ timimakarograsaṁkulaṁ taṁ; garjantaṁ jalacararāvaraudranādaiḥ ,
vistīrṇaṁ dadṛśaturambaraprakāśaṁ; te'gādhaṁ nidhimurumambhasāmanantam.
16. gambhīram timimakarograsaṅkulam tam
garjantam jalacarāvaraudranādaiḥ
vistīrṇam dadṛśatuḥ ambaraprakāśam te
agādham nidhim urum ambhasām anantam
16. They both saw that great, deep, unfathomable, and boundless reservoir of waters, crowded with fierce whales and crocodiles. It roared with the terrifying cries of aquatic creatures and shone with the brilliance of the sky.
16. הן ראו את האוקיינוס העמוק, גדוש לווייתנים ומפלצות ים אכזריות, שואג בקולות נוראים של יצורי מים, רחב, מאיר כמו השמיים, ללא עומק, אוצר מים עצום ובלתי נגמר.
इत्येवं झषमकरोर्मिसंकुलं तं गम्भीरं विकसितमम्बरप्रकाशम् ।
पातालज्वलनशिखाविदीपितं तं पश्यन्त्यौ द्रुतमभिपेततुस्तदानीम् ॥१७॥
17. ityevaṁ jhaṣamakarormisaṁkulaṁ taṁ; gambhīraṁ vikasitamambaraprakāśam ,
pātālajvalanaśikhāvidīpitaṁ taṁ; paśyantyau drutamabhipetatustadānīm.
17. iti evam jhaṣamakarormisaṅkulam tam
gambhīram vikasitam ambaraprakāśam
pātālajvalanaśikhāvidīpitam tam
paśyantyau drutam abhipetatuḥ tadānīm
17. Thus, seeing that deep, vast, and sky-radiant ocean - teeming with fish, crocodiles, and waves, and illuminated by the flames of the netherworld - those two then quickly approached it.
17. כך, כשהביטו בו מלא דגים, מפלצות ים וגלים, עמוק, נרחב ומבהיק כמו השמיים, ומואר בלהבות אש הפָּאטָאלַה, מיהרו שתיהן באותו רגע להמשיך הלאה.
