वैशंपायन उवाच ।
धिगस्तु क्षत्तारमिति ब्रुवाणो दर्पेण मत्तो धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रः ।
अवैक्षत प्रातिकामीं सभायामुवाच चैनं परमार्यमध्ये ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dhigastu kṣattāramiti bruvāṇo; darpeṇa matto dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ ,
avaikṣata prātikāmīṁ sabhāyā;muvāca cainaṁ paramāryamadhye.

1. Vaiśampaayana said: "Woe to the charioteer (Kṣattā)!" Uttering these words, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana), who was intoxicated by arrogance, looked at Prātikāmī in the assembly hall and then spoke to him in the presence of the most respected nobles.
त्वं प्रातिकामिन्द्रौपदीमानयस्व न ते भयं विद्यते पाण्डवेभ्यः ।
क्षत्ता ह्ययं विवदत्येव भीरुर्न चास्माकं वृद्धिकामः सदैव ॥२॥
2. tvaṁ prātikāmindraupadīmānayasva; na te bhayaṁ vidyate pāṇḍavebhyaḥ ,
kṣattā hyayaṁ vivadatyeva bhīru;rna cāsmākaṁ vṛddhikāmaḥ sadaiva.
2. tvam prātikāmin draupadīm ānayasva
na te bhayam vidyate pāṇḍavebhyaḥ
kṣattā hi ayam vivadati eva bhīruḥ
na ca asmākam vṛddhikāmaḥ sadaiva
2. (Duryodhana said to Prātikāmī) "You, Prātikāmī, bring Draupadī! You have nothing to fear from the Pāṇḍavas. This charioteer (Kṣattā), being a coward, merely argues, and he is never truly concerned with our prosperity (vṛddhikāma)."
एवमुक्तः प्रातिकामी स सूतः प्रायाच्छीघ्रं राजवचो निशम्य ।
प्रविश्य च श्वेव स सिंहगोष्ठं समासदन्महिषीं पाण्डवानाम् ॥३॥
3. evamuktaḥ prātikāmī sa sūtaḥ; prāyācchīghraṁ rājavaco niśamya ,
praviśya ca śveva sa siṁhagoṣṭhaṁ; samāsadanmahiṣīṁ pāṇḍavānām.

prāyāt śīghram rājavacaḥ niśamya
praviśya ca śvā iva sa siṃhagoṣṭham
samāsat mahiṣīm pāṇḍavānām
3. Thus spoken to, that charioteer (Sūta) Prātikāmī, having heard the king's command, swiftly departed. And like a dog entering a lion's den, he approached the chief queen (mahiṣī) of the Pāṇḍavas.
प्रातिकाम्युवाच ।
युधिष्ठिरे द्यूतमदेन मत्ते दुर्योधनो द्रौपदि त्वामजैषीत् ।
सा प्रपद्य त्वं धृतराष्ट्रस्य वेश्म नयामि त्वां कर्मणे याज्ञसेनि ॥४॥
4. prātikāmyuvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhire dyūtamadena matte; duryodhano draupadi tvāmajaiṣīt ,
sā prapadya tvaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya veśma; nayāmi tvāṁ karmaṇe yājñaseni.
4. prātikāmī uvāca yudhiṣṭhire dyūtamadena
matte duryodhanaḥ draupadi tvām
ajaiṣīt sā prapadya tvam dhṛtarāṣṭrasya
veśma nayāmi tvām karmaṇe yājñaseni
4. Prātikāmī said: "O Draupadī, Duryodhana has won you while Yudhiṣṭhira was intoxicated by the madness of gambling. Therefore, O Yājñasenī, come (prāpya) to Dhṛtarāṣṭra's palace (veśma); I am taking you for service (karma)."
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
कथं त्वेवं वदसि प्रातिकामिन्को वै दीव्येद्भार्यया राजपुत्रः ।
मूढो राजा द्यूतमदेन मत्त आहो नान्यत्कैतवमस्य किंचित् ॥५॥
5. draupadyuvāca ,
kathaṁ tvevaṁ vadasi prātikāmi;nko vai dīvyedbhāryayā rājaputraḥ ,
mūḍho rājā dyūtamadena matta; āho nānyatkaitavamasya kiṁcit.
5. draupadī uvāca katham tu evam vadasi
prātīkāmin kaḥ vai dīvyet bhāryayā
rājaputraḥ mūḍhaḥ rājā dyūtamadena
mattaḥ āho na anyat kaitavam asya kiṃcit
5. Draupadi said: "How can you speak like this, O Prātīkāmin? What prince would gamble away his wife? Is the king deluded, intoxicated by the madness of gambling, or did he truly have no other stakes (kaitava) at all?"
प्रातिकाम्युवाच ।
यदा नाभूत्कैतवमन्यदस्य तदादेवीत्पाण्डवोऽजातशत्रुः ।
न्यस्ताः पूर्वं भ्रातरस्तेन राज्ञा स्वयं चात्मा त्वमथो राजपुत्रि ॥६॥
6. prātikāmyuvāca ,
yadā nābhūtkaitavamanyadasya; tadādevītpāṇḍavo'jātaśatruḥ ,
nyastāḥ pūrvaṁ bhrātarastena rājñā; svayaṁ cātmā tvamatho rājaputri.
6. prātīkāmī uvāca yadā na abhūt kaitavam
anyat asya tadā adīvīt pāṇḍavaḥ
ajātaśatruḥ nyastāḥ pūrvam bhrātaraḥ tena
rājñā svayam ca ātmā tvam atho rājaputri
6. Prātīkāmin said: "When he (Yudhiṣṭhira) had no other stakes (kaitava) left, then that Pāṇḍava, Ajātaśatru, gambled (with you). Previously, that king had already staked his brothers, and also his own self (ātman), O princess, and then you."
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
गच्छ त्वं कितवं गत्वा सभायां पृच्छ सूतज ।
किं नु पूर्वं पराजैषीरात्मानं मां नु भारत ।
एतज्ज्ञात्वा त्वमागच्छ ततो मां नय सूतज ॥७॥
7. draupadyuvāca ,
gaccha tvaṁ kitavaṁ gatvā sabhāyāṁ pṛccha sūtaja ,
kiṁ nu pūrvaṁ parājaiṣīrātmānaṁ māṁ nu bhārata ,
etajjñātvā tvamāgaccha tato māṁ naya sūtaja.
7. draupadī uvāca gaccha tvam kitavam gatvā
sabhāyām pṛccha sūtaja kim nu pūrvam
parājaiṣīḥ ātmānam mām nu bhārata etat
jñātvā tvam āgaccha tataḥ mām naya sūtaja
7. Draupadi said: "You go to the gambler, O son of a charioteer (sūtaja), and ask in the assembly: 'Did you first lose your own self (ātman) or me, O Bhārata?' After learning this, you come back, and then, O son of a charioteer (sūtaja), take me."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सभां गत्वा स चोवाच द्रौपद्यास्तद्वचस्तदा ।
कस्येशो नः पराजैषीरिति त्वामाह द्रौपदी ।
किं नु पूर्वं पराजैषीरात्मानमथ वापि माम् ॥८॥
8. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sabhāṁ gatvā sa covāca draupadyāstadvacastadā ,
kasyeśo naḥ parājaiṣīriti tvāmāha draupadī ,
kiṁ nu pūrvaṁ parājaiṣīrātmānamatha vāpi mām.
8. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca sabhām gatvā sa ca uvāca
draupadyāḥ tat vacas tadā kasya īśaḥ
naḥ parājaiṣīḥ iti tvām āha draupadī kim nu
pūrvam parājaiṣīḥ ātmānam atha vā api mām
8. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "Having gone to the assembly, he then repeated Draupadi's words (to Yudhiṣṭhira): 'You who gambled us away, whose master are we now? Did you first lose your own self (ātman), or me?'"
युधिष्ठिरस्तु निश्चेष्टो गतसत्त्व इवाभवत् ।
न तं सूतं प्रत्युवाच वचनं साध्वसाधु वा ॥९॥
9. yudhiṣṭhirastu niśceṣṭo gatasattva ivābhavat ,
na taṁ sūtaṁ pratyuvāca vacanaṁ sādhvasādhu vā.
9. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu niśceṣṭaḥ gata-sattvaḥ iva abhavat
na tam sūtam pratyuvāca vacanam sādhu asādhu vā
9. Yudhishthira, however, became motionless, as if his vital spirit had departed. He did not reply to that charioteer with a single word, whether good or bad.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
इहैत्य कृष्णा पाञ्चाली प्रश्नमेतं प्रभाषताम् ।
इहैव सर्वे शृण्वन्तु तस्या अस्य च यद्वचः ॥१०॥
10. duryodhana uvāca ,
ihaitya kṛṣṇā pāñcālī praśnametaṁ prabhāṣatām ,
ihaiva sarve śṛṇvantu tasyā asya ca yadvacaḥ.
10. duryodhanaḥ uvāca iha etya kṛṣṇā pāñcālī praśnam etam
prabhāṣatām iha eva sarve śṛṇvantu tasyāḥ asya ca yat vacaḥ
10. Duryodhana said: "Let Krishna (Draupadi), the princess of Panchala, come here and pose this question. Let everyone present here listen to whatever she and he (Yudhishthira) have to say."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स गत्वा राजभवनं दुर्योधनवशानुगः ।
उवाच द्रौपदीं सूतः प्रातिकामी व्यथन्निव ॥११॥
11. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sa gatvā rājabhavanaṁ duryodhanavaśānugaḥ ,
uvāca draupadīṁ sūtaḥ prātikāmī vyathanniva.
11. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca sa gatvā rāja-bhavanam duryodhana-vaśānugaḥ
uvāca draupadīm sūtaḥ prātikāmī vyathan iva
11. Vaishampayana said: "Having reached the royal palace, the charioteer Pratikamin, who was subservient to Duryodhana, addressed Draupadi, appearing as if in great distress."
सभ्यास्त्वमी राजपुत्र्याह्वयन्ति मन्ये प्राप्तः संक्षयः कौरवाणाम् ।
न वै समृद्धिं पालयते लघीयान्यत्त्वं सभामेष्यसि राजपुत्रि ॥१२॥
12. sabhyāstvamī rājaputryāhvayanti; manye prāptaḥ saṁkṣayaḥ kauravāṇām ,
na vai samṛddhiṁ pālayate laghīyā;nyattvaṁ sabhāmeṣyasi rājaputri.
12. sabhyāḥ tu amī rāja-putryāḥ āhvayanti
manye prāptaḥ saṃkṣayaḥ kauravāṇām
na vai samṛddhim pālayate laghīyān
yat tvam sabhām eṣyasi rāja-putri
12. O princess, these members of the assembly are summoning you. I believe the ultimate ruin (saṃkṣaya) of the Kauravas has arrived. Surely, an insignificant person (Duryodhana) cannot preserve his prosperity by compelling you, O princess, to come to this assembly.
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
एवं नूनं व्यदधात्संविधाता स्पर्शावुभौ स्पृशतो धीरबालौ ।
धर्मं त्वेकं परमं प्राह लोके स नः शमं धास्यति गोप्यमानः ॥१३॥
13. draupadyuvāca ,
evaṁ nūnaṁ vyadadhātsaṁvidhātā; sparśāvubhau spṛśato dhīrabālau ,
dharmaṁ tvekaṁ paramaṁ prāha loke; sa naḥ śamaṁ dhāsyati gopyamānaḥ.
13. draupadī uvāca evam nūnam vyadadhāt
saṃvidhātā sparśau ubhau spṛśataḥ
dhīra-bālau dharmam tu ekam paramam prāha
loke saḥ naḥ śamam dhāsyati gopyamānaḥ
13. Draupadi said: "Indeed, the Ordainer has thus ordained both experiences (of pleasure and pain), which affect both the wise and the ignorant. However, He has proclaimed one supreme natural law (dharma) in the world. He, remaining concealed, will grant us peace."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
युधिष्ठिरस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा दुर्योधनचिकीर्षितम् ।
द्रौपद्याः संमतं दूतं प्राहिणोद्भरतर्षभ ॥१४॥
14. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhirastu tacchrutvā duryodhanacikīrṣitam ,
draupadyāḥ saṁmataṁ dūtaṁ prāhiṇodbharatarṣabha.
14. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu tat śrutvā duryodhana-cikīrṣitam
draupadyāḥ saṃmatam dūtam prāhiṇot bharata-ṛṣabha
14. Vaiśampāyana said: "Yudhishthira, upon hearing what Duryodhana intended, and with Draupadi's consent, then sent a messenger, O best of the Bharatas."
एकवस्त्रा अधोनीवी रोदमाना रजस्वला ।
सभामागम्य पाञ्चाली श्वशुरस्याग्रतोऽभवत् ॥१५॥
15. ekavastrā adhonīvī rodamānā rajasvalā ,
sabhāmāgamya pāñcālī śvaśurasyāgrato'bhavat.
15. eka-vastrā adhaḥ-nīvī rodamānā rajasvalā sabhām
āgamya pāñcālī śvaśurasya agrataḥ abhavat
15. Wearing a single garment, with her lower garment loosened, weeping, and in her menses, Panchali (Draupadi), having arrived at the assembly hall, stood before her father-in-law.
ततस्तेषां मुखमालोक्य राजा दुर्योधनः सूतमुवाच हृष्टः ।
इहैवैतामानय प्रातिकामिन्प्रत्यक्षमस्याः कुरवो ब्रुवन्तु ॥१६॥
16. tatasteṣāṁ mukhamālokya rājā; duryodhanaḥ sūtamuvāca hṛṣṭaḥ ,
ihaivaitāmānaya prātikāmi;npratyakṣamasyāḥ kuravo bruvantu.
16. tataḥ teṣām mukham ālokya rājā
duryodhanaḥ sūtam uvāca hṛṣṭaḥ
iha eva etām ānaya prātikāmin
pratyakṣam asyāḥ kuravaḥ bruvantu
16. Then, seeing their faces, King Duryodhana, delighted, said to the charioteer: "Prātikāmin, bring her here directly! Let the Kurus speak in her presence."
ततः सूतस्तस्य वशानुगामी भीतश्च कोपाद्द्रुपदात्मजायाः ।
विहाय मानं पुनरेव सभ्यानुवाच कृष्णां किमहं ब्रवीमि ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ sūtastasya vaśānugāmī; bhītaśca kopāddrupadātmajāyāḥ ,
vihāya mānaṁ punareva sabhyā;nuvāca kṛṣṇāṁ kimahaṁ bravīmi.
17. tataḥ sūtaḥ tasya vaśānugāmī
bhītaḥ ca kopāt drupadātmajāyāḥ
vihāya mānam punaḥ eva sabhyān
uvāca kṛṣṇām kim aham bravīmi
17. Then the charioteer, obedient to him and frightened by the anger of Draupadī's daughter, abandoning his pride, spoke again to the assembly members regarding Kṛṣṇā, saying, 'What shall I say?'
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
दुःशासनैष मम सूतपुत्रो वृकोदरादुद्विजतेऽल्पचेताः ।
स्वयं प्रगृह्यानय याज्ञसेनीं किं ते करिष्यन्त्यवशाः सपत्नाः ॥१८॥
18. duryodhana uvāca ,
duḥśāsanaiṣa mama sūtaputro; vṛkodarādudvijate'lpacetāḥ ,
svayaṁ pragṛhyānaya yājñasenīṁ; kiṁ te kariṣyantyavaśāḥ sapatnāḥ.
18. duryodhanaḥ uvāca duḥśāsana eṣaḥ mama
sūtaputraḥ vṛkodarāt udvijate
alpacetāḥ svayam pragṛhya ānaya yājñasenīm
kim te kariṣyanti avaśāḥ sapatnāḥ
18. Duryodhana said: 'Oh Duḥśāsana, this charioteer's son is faint-hearted and shrinks from Bhīma (Vṛkodara). Go and seize Yājñasenī yourself. What can your powerless enemies (sapatnāḥ) do?'
ततः समुत्थाय स राजपुत्रः श्रुत्वा भ्रातुः कोपविरक्तदृष्टिः ।
प्रविश्य तद्वेश्म महारथानामित्यब्रवीद्द्रौपदीं राजपुत्रीम् ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ samutthāya sa rājaputraḥ; śrutvā bhrātuḥ kopaviraktadṛṣṭiḥ ,
praviśya tadveśma mahārathānā;mityabravīddraupadīṁ rājaputrīm.
19. tataḥ samutthāya saḥ rājaputraḥ
śrutvā bhrātuḥ kopa-virakta-dṛṣṭiḥ
praviśya tat veśma mahārathānām
iti abravīt draupadīm rājaputrīm
19. Then that prince (Duḥśāsana), rising up, having heard his brother's words, with eyes inflamed by anger, entered the chamber of those great warriors and spoke thus to Princess Draupadī.
एह्येहि पाञ्चालि जितासि कृष्णे दुर्योधनं पश्य विमुक्तलज्जा ।
कुरून्भजस्वायतपद्मनेत्रे धर्मेण लब्धासि सभां परैहि ॥२०॥
20. ehyehi pāñcāli jitāsi kṛṣṇe; duryodhanaṁ paśya vimuktalajjā ,
kurūnbhajasvāyatapadmanetre; dharmeṇa labdhāsi sabhāṁ paraihi.
20. ehi ehi pāñcāli jitā asi kṛṣṇe
duryodhanam paśya vimuktalajjā
kurūn bhajasva āyata-padma-netre
dharmeṇa labdhā asi sabhām paraihi
20. 'Come, come, O Pāñcālī (Draupadī)! You have been conquered, O Kṛṣṇā! Cast off shame and behold Duryodhana. Serve the Kurus, O you with eyes like broad lotuses! You have been won by the natural law (dharma); now go to the assembly!'
ततः समुत्थाय सुदुर्मनाः सा विवर्णमामृज्य मुखं करेण ।
आर्ता प्रदुद्राव यतः स्त्रियस्ता वृद्धस्य राज्ञः कुरुपुंगवस्य ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ samutthāya sudurmanāḥ sā; vivarṇamāmṛjya mukhaṁ kareṇa ,
ārtā pradudrāva yataḥ striyastā; vṛddhasya rājñaḥ kurupuṁgavasya.
21. tataḥ samutthāya sudurmanāḥ sā
vivarṇam āmṛjya mukham kareṇa
ārtā pradudrāva yataḥ striyaḥ tāḥ
vṛddhasya rājñaḥ kurupuṅgavasya
21. Then, that deeply distressed woman rose up, wiped her pale face with her hand, and, full of anguish, ran towards where the women of the aged king, the chief of the Kurus, were gathered.
ततो जवेनाभिससार रोषाद्दुःशासनस्तामभिगर्जमानः ।
दीर्घेषु नीलेष्वथ चोर्मिमत्सु जग्राह केशेषु नरेन्द्रपत्नीम् ॥२२॥
22. tato javenābhisasāra roṣā;dduḥśāsanastāmabhigarjamānaḥ ,
dīrgheṣu nīleṣvatha cormimatsu; jagrāha keśeṣu narendrapatnīm.
22. tataḥ javena abhisasāra roṣāt
duḥśāsanaḥ tām abhigarjamānaḥ
dīrgheṣu nīleṣu atha ca ūrmimatsu
jagrāha keśeṣu narendrapatnīm
22. Then, Duhshasana, roaring with rage, swiftly rushed towards her and seized the queen (narendrapatnī) by her long, dark, and wavy hair.
ये राजसूयावभृथे जलेन महाक्रतौ मन्त्रपूतेन सिक्ताः ।
ते पाण्डवानां परिभूय वीर्यं बलात्प्रमृष्टा धृतराष्ट्रजेन ॥२३॥
23. ye rājasūyāvabhṛthe jalena; mahākratau mantrapūtena siktāḥ ,
te pāṇḍavānāṁ paribhūya vīryaṁ; balātpramṛṣṭā dhṛtarāṣṭrajena.
23. ye rājasūya avabhṛthe jalena
mahākratau mantrapūtena siktāḥ
te pāṇḍavānām paribhūya vīryam
balāt pramṛṣṭāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrajena

23. Those who were sprinkled with water purified by sacred syllables (mantra) at the concluding bath of the great Rājasūya Vedic ritual (yajña) – they, having overcome the valor of the Pāṇḍavas, were forcibly wiped away by the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
स तां परामृश्य सभासमीपमानीय कृष्णामतिकृष्णकेशीम् ।
दुःशासनो नाथवतीमनाथवच्चकर्ष वायुः कदलीमिवार्ताम् ॥२४॥
24. sa tāṁ parāmṛśya sabhāsamīpa;mānīya kṛṣṇāmatikṛṣṇakeśīm ,
duḥśāsano nāthavatīmanāthava;ccakarṣa vāyuḥ kadalīmivārtām.
24. saḥ tām parāmṛśya sabhāsamīpam
ānīya kṛṣṇām atikṛṣṇakeśīm
duḥśāsanaḥ nāthavatīm anāthavat
cakarṣa vāyuḥ kadalīm iva ārtām
24. Duhshasana, having violently seized and brought that Draupadī (kṛṣṇā), whose hair was exceedingly dark, to the vicinity of the assembly hall, dragged her, who possessed protectors, as if she were utterly unprotected, just as the wind drags an afflicted banana tree.
सा कृष्यमाणा नमिताङ्गयष्टिः शनैरुवाचाद्य रजस्वलास्मि ।
एकं च वासो मम मन्दबुद्धे सभां नेतुं नार्हसि मामनार्य ॥२५॥
25. sā kṛṣyamāṇā namitāṅgayaṣṭiḥ; śanairuvācādya rajasvalāsmi ,
ekaṁ ca vāso mama mandabuddhe; sabhāṁ netuṁ nārhasi māmanārya.
25. sā kṛṣyamāṇā namitāṅgayaṣṭiḥ śanaiḥ
uvāca adya rajasvalā asmi |
ekam ca vāsaḥ mama mandabuddhe
sabhām netum na arhasi mām anārya
25. As she was being dragged, her slender frame bowed, she slowly said, "Today I am menstruating. And, O dull-witted one, with only one garment, you, ignoble one, ought not to lead me to the assembly."
ततोऽब्रवीत्तां प्रसभं निगृह्य केशेषु कृष्णेषु तदा स कृष्णाम् ।
कृष्णं च जिष्णुं च हरिं नरं च त्राणाय विक्रोश नयामि हि त्वाम् ॥२६॥
26. tato'bravīttāṁ prasabhaṁ nigṛhya; keśeṣu kṛṣṇeṣu tadā sa kṛṣṇām ,
kṛṣṇaṁ ca jiṣṇuṁ ca hariṁ naraṁ ca; trāṇāya vikrośa nayāmi hi tvām.
26. tataḥ abravīt tām prasabham nigṛhya
keśeṣu kṛṣṇeṣu tadā sa kṛṣṇām
| kṛṣṇam ca jiṣṇum ca harim naram
ca trāṇāya vikrośa nayāmi hi tvām
26. Then, forcibly seizing her by her dark hair, he (Duḥśāsana) said to Draupadi (kṛṣṇā) at that time, "Even if you cry out for kṛṣṇa, and Jishnu (Arjuna), and Hari (kṛṣṇa), and Nara (Arjuna) for protection, I will certainly drag you away."
रजस्वला वा भव याज्ञसेनि एकाम्बरा वाप्यथ वा विवस्त्रा ।
द्यूते जिता चासि कृतासि दासी दासीषु कामश्च यथोपजोषम् ॥२७॥
27. rajasvalā vā bhava yājñaseni; ekāmbarā vāpyatha vā vivastrā ,
dyūte jitā cāsi kṛtāsi dāsī; dāsīṣu kāmaśca yathopajoṣam.

27. "Whether you are menstruating, O daughter of Drupada (yājñaseni), or you have only one garment, or you are unclothed; you have been won in the game of dice and made a slave. And among slaves, one's desires are fulfilled as one pleases."
प्रकीर्णकेशी पतितार्धवस्त्रा दुःशासनेन व्यवधूयमाना ।
ह्रीमत्यमर्षेण च दह्यमाना शनैरिदं वाक्यमुवाच कृष्णा ॥२८॥
28. prakīrṇakeśī patitārdhavastrā; duḥśāsanena vyavadhūyamānā ,
hrīmatyamarṣeṇa ca dahyamānā; śanairidaṁ vākyamuvāca kṛṣṇā.

28. With her hair dishevelled, her garment half-fallen, and being tossed about by Duḥśāsana, Draupadi (kṛṣṇā), burning with shame and indignation, slowly uttered these words.
इमे सभायामुपदिष्टशास्त्राः क्रियावन्तः सर्व एवेन्द्रकल्पाः ।
गुरुस्थाना गुरवश्चैव सर्वे तेषामग्रे नोत्सहे स्थातुमेवम् ॥२९॥
29. ime sabhāyāmupadiṣṭaśāstrāḥ; kriyāvantaḥ sarva evendrakalpāḥ ,
gurusthānā guravaścaiva sarve; teṣāmagre notsahe sthātumevam.

29. All these individuals in the assembly are learned in the scriptures, active, and mighty like Indra. All of them are venerable as teachers and elders. I cannot bring myself to stand before them in this manner.
नृशंसकर्मंस्त्वमनार्यवृत्त मा मां विवस्त्रां कृधि मा विकार्षीः ।
न मर्षयेयुस्तव राजपुत्राः सेन्द्रापि देवा यदि ते सहायाः ॥३०॥
30. nṛśaṁsakarmaṁstvamanāryavṛtta; mā māṁ vivastrāṁ kṛdhi mā vikārṣīḥ ,
na marṣayeyustava rājaputrāḥ; sendrāpi devā yadi te sahāyāḥ.

mā mām vivastrām kṛdhi mā vikārṣīḥ
na marṣayeyuḥ tava rājaputrāḥ

30. O you whose actions are cruel, you with ignoble conduct, do not make me unclothed, do not dishonor me! Your own princes would not tolerate such an act, even if the gods, led by Indra, were your allies.
धर्मे स्थितो धर्मसुतश्च राजा धर्मश्च सूक्ष्मो निपुणोपलभ्यः ।
वाचापि भर्तुः परमाणुमात्रं नेच्छामि दोषं स्वगुणान्विसृज्य ॥३१॥
31. dharme sthito dharmasutaśca rājā; dharmaśca sūkṣmo nipuṇopalabhyaḥ ,
vācāpi bhartuḥ paramāṇumātraṁ; necchāmi doṣaṁ svaguṇānvisṛjya.

31. The king, son of Dharma (dharma), is firm in the natural law (dharma), and the natural law (dharma) itself is subtle, discernible only by the discerning. Therefore, I do not wish to abandon my own good qualities and, even by a mere word, find the slightest fault in my husband.
इदं त्वनार्यं कुरुवीरमध्ये रजस्वलां यत्परिकर्षसे माम् ।
न चापि कश्चित्कुरुतेऽत्र पूजां ध्रुवं तवेदं मतमन्वपद्यन् ॥३२॥
32. idaṁ tvanāryaṁ kuruvīramadhye; rajasvalāṁ yatparikarṣase mām ,
na cāpi kaścitkurute'tra pūjāṁ; dhruvaṁ tavedaṁ matamanvapadyan.
32. idam tu anāryam kuruveeramadhye
rajasvalām yat parikarṣase mām na
ca api kaścit kurute atra pūjām
dhruvam tava idam matam anvapadyan
32. But this act is indeed ignoble, that you drag me, a menstruating woman, into the midst of the Kuru heroes. Moreover, not a single person here shows me any respect. Surely, they have all adopted this intention of yours.
धिगस्तु नष्टः खलु भारतानां धर्मस्तथा क्षत्रविदां च वृत्तम् ।
यत्राभ्यतीतां कुरुधर्मवेलां प्रेक्षन्ति सर्वे कुरवः सभायाम् ॥३३॥
33. dhigastu naṣṭaḥ khalu bhāratānāṁ; dharmastathā kṣatravidāṁ ca vṛttam ,
yatrābhyatītāṁ kurudharmavelāṁ; prekṣanti sarve kuravaḥ sabhāyām.
33. dhik astu naṣṭaḥ khalu bhāratānām
dharmaḥ tathā kṣatravidām ca vṛttam

33. Shame! The constitution (dharma) of the Bhāratas and the conduct of those who uphold the warrior code are certainly ruined. All the Kurus in the assembly merely watch as the boundary of Kuru constitution (dharma) is being transgressed.
द्रोणस्य भीष्मस्य च नास्ति सत्त्वं ध्रुवं तथैवास्य महात्मनोऽपि ।
राज्ञस्तथा हीममधर्ममुग्रं न लक्षयन्ते कुरुवृद्धमुख्याः ॥३४॥
34. droṇasya bhīṣmasya ca nāsti sattvaṁ; dhruvaṁ tathaivāsya mahātmano'pi ,
rājñastathā hīmamadharmamugraṁ; na lakṣayante kuruvṛddhamukhyāḥ.

dhruvam tathā eva asya mahātmanaḥ
api rājñaḥ tathā hīnam adharmam

34. There is no strength (sattva) in Droṇa or Bhīṣma, and certainly not even in this great soul (mahātman) (Dhṛtarāṣṭra). Similarly, the chief elders among the Kurus do not perceive this terrible, despicable violation of constitution (adharma) of the king.
तथा ब्रुवन्ती करुणं सुमध्यमा काक्षेण भर्तॄन्कुपितानपश्यत् ।
सा पाण्डवान्कोपपरीतदेहान्संदीपयामास कटाक्षपातैः ॥३५॥
35. tathā bruvantī karuṇaṁ sumadhyamā; kākṣeṇa bhartṝnkupitānapaśyat ,
sā pāṇḍavānkopaparītadehā;nsaṁdīpayāmāsa kaṭākṣapātaiḥ.
35. tathā bruvantī karuṇam sumadhyamā
kākṣeṇa bhartṝn kupitān
apaśyat sā pāṇḍavān kopaparītadehān
sandīpayāmāsa kaṭākṣapātaiḥ
35. Thus, the slender-waisted Draupadī, speaking mournfully, looked at her enraged husbands. She ignited the Pāṇḍavas, whose bodies were overcome with anger, with her side-long glances.
हृतेन राज्येन तथा धनेन रत्नैश्च मुख्यैर्न तथा बभूव ।
यथार्तया कोपसमीरितेन कृष्णाकटाक्षेण बभूव दुःखम् ॥३६॥
36. hṛtena rājyena tathā dhanena; ratnaiśca mukhyairna tathā babhūva ,
yathārtayā kopasamīritena; kṛṣṇākaṭākṣeṇa babhūva duḥkham.

36. The sorrow caused by the seizing of the kingdom, the wealth, and the principal jewels was not as profound as the suffering (duḥkha) that occurred due to the distressed Draupadī's anger-stirred side-long glance.
दुःशासनश्चापि समीक्ष्य कृष्णामवेक्षमाणां कृपणान्पतींस्तान् ।
आधूय वेगेन विसंज्ञकल्पामुवाच दासीति हसन्निवोग्रः ॥३७॥
37. duḥśāsanaścāpi samīkṣya kṛṣṇā;mavekṣamāṇāṁ kṛpaṇānpatīṁstān ,
ādhūya vegena visaṁjñakalpā;muvāca dāsīti hasannivograḥ.
37. duḥśāsanaḥ ca api samīkṣya kṛṣṇām
avekṣamāṇām kṛpaṇān patīn
tān ādhūya vegena visaṃjñakalpām
uvāca dāsī iti hasan iva ugraḥ
37. And the fierce Duśśāsana, laughing, seeing Kṛṣṇā looking at her pitiable husbands, violently shook her, who was almost senseless, and called her a slave girl.
कर्णस्तु तद्वाक्यमतीव हृष्टः संपूजयामास हसन्सशब्दम् ।
गान्धारराजः सुबलस्य पुत्रस्तथैव दुःशासनमभ्यनन्दत् ॥३८॥
38. karṇastu tadvākyamatīva hṛṣṭaḥ; saṁpūjayāmāsa hasansaśabdam ,
gāndhārarājaḥ subalasya putra;stathaiva duḥśāsanamabhyanandat.
38. karṇaḥ tu tat vākyam atīva hṛṣṭaḥ
saṃpūjayāmāsa hasan saśabdam
gāndhārarājaḥ subalasya putraḥ
tathā eva duḥśāsanam abhyanandat
38. Karṇa, indeed, was exceedingly delighted by that statement and applauded loudly while laughing. Similarly, the king of Gandhāra, Subala's son, congratulated Duśśāsana.
सभ्यास्तु ये तत्र बभूवुरन्ये ताभ्यामृते धार्तराष्ट्रेण चैव ।
तेषामभूद्दुःखमतीव कृष्णां दृष्ट्वा सभायां परिकृष्यमाणाम् ॥३९॥
39. sabhyāstu ye tatra babhūvuranye; tābhyāmṛte dhārtarāṣṭreṇa caiva ,
teṣāmabhūdduḥkhamatīva kṛṣṇāṁ; dṛṣṭvā sabhāyāṁ parikṛṣyamāṇām.
39. sabhyāḥ tu ye tatra babhūvuḥ anye
tābhyām ṛte dhārtarāṣṭreṇa ca
eva teṣām abhūt duḥkham atīva
kṛṣṇām dṛṣṭvā sabhāyām parikṛṣyamāṇām
39. But for those other courtiers present there, excluding those two (Karṇa and Duśśāsana) and Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana), great sorrow arose upon seeing Kṛṣṇā being dragged in the assembly hall.
भीष्म उवाच ।
न धर्मसौक्ष्म्यात्सुभगे विवक्तुं शक्नोमि ते प्रश्नमिमं यथावत् ।
अस्वो ह्यशक्तः पणितुं परस्वं स्त्रियश्च भर्तुर्वशतां समीक्ष्य ॥४०॥
40. bhīṣma uvāca ,
na dharmasaukṣmyātsubhage vivaktuṁ; śaknomi te praśnamimaṁ yathāvat ,
asvo hyaśaktaḥ paṇituṁ parasvaṁ; striyaśca bharturvaśatāṁ samīkṣya.

vivaktum śaknomi te praśnam imam
yathāvat asvaḥ hi aśaktaḥ paṇitum parasvam

40. Bhīṣma said: "O fortunate one, due to the extreme subtlety of the natural law (dharma), I am unable to properly answer this question for you. This is because a man without possessions is indeed unable to stake another's property, and one must also consider a wife's complete subjection to her husband."
त्यजेत सर्वां पृथिवीं समृद्धां युधिष्ठिरः सत्यमथो न जह्यात् ।
उक्तं जितोऽस्मीति च पाण्डवेन तस्मान्न शक्नोमि विवेक्तुमेतत् ॥४१॥
41. tyajeta sarvāṁ pṛthivīṁ samṛddhāṁ; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ satyamatho na jahyāt ,
uktaṁ jito'smīti ca pāṇḍavena; tasmānna śaknomi vivektumetat.

yudhiṣṭhiraḥ satyam atho na jahyāt
uktam jitaḥ asmi iti ca pāṇḍavena

41. Yudhishthira would give up the entire prosperous earth, but he would never abandon truth. Moreover, the son of Pandu himself declared, "I am conquered." Therefore, I am unable to make sense of this situation.
द्यूतेऽद्वितीयः शकुनिर्नरेषु कुन्तीसुतस्तेन निसृष्टकामः ।
न मन्यते तां निकृतिं महात्मा तस्मान्न ते प्रश्नमिमं ब्रवीमि ॥४२॥
42. dyūte'dvitīyaḥ śakunirnareṣu; kuntīsutastena nisṛṣṭakāmaḥ ,
na manyate tāṁ nikṛtiṁ mahātmā; tasmānna te praśnamimaṁ bravīmi.
42. dyūte advitīyaḥ śakuniḥ nareṣu
kuntīsutaḥ tena nisṛṣṭakāmaḥ na
manyate tām nikṛtim mahātmā
tasmāt na te praśnam imam bravīmi
42. Shakuni is unequaled among men in dice-play. The son of Kunti (Yudhishthira) had all his desires (kāma) surrendered by him (through Shakuni's actions). Yet, that great-souled one (Yudhishthira) does not consider that act to be deceit. Therefore, I cannot answer this question of yours.
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
आहूय राजा कुशलैः सभायां दुष्टात्मभिर्नैकृतिकैरनार्यैः ।
द्यूतप्रियैर्नातिकृतप्रयत्नः कस्मादयं नाम निसृष्टकामः ॥४३॥
43. draupadyuvāca ,
āhūya rājā kuśalaiḥ sabhāyāṁ; duṣṭātmabhirnaikṛtikairanāryaiḥ ,
dyūtapriyairnātikṛtaprayatnaḥ; kasmādayaṁ nāma nisṛṣṭakāmaḥ.
43. draupadī uvāca āhūya rājā kuśalaiḥ
sabhāyām duṣṭātmabhiḥ naikṛtikaiḥ
anāryaiḥ dyūtapriyaiḥ na atikṛtaprayatnaḥ
kasmāt ayam nāma nisṛṣṭakāmaḥ
43. Draupadi said: "When the king (Yudhishthira) was summoned to the assembly by those skilled in dice, by evil-minded, deceitful, ignoble individuals who were fond of gambling, and he himself had not made sufficient effort, why then is this one called 'one who has surrendered all his desires (kāma)'?"
स शुद्धभावो निकृतिप्रवृत्तिमबुध्यमानः कुरुपाण्डवाग्र्यः ।
संभूय सर्वैश्च जितोऽपि यस्मात्पश्चाच्च यत्कैतवमभ्युपेतः ॥४४॥
44. sa śuddhabhāvo nikṛtipravṛtti;mabudhyamānaḥ kurupāṇḍavāgryaḥ ,
saṁbhūya sarvaiśca jito'pi yasmā;tpaścācca yatkaitavamabhyupetaḥ.
44. sa śuddhabhāvaḥ nikṛtipravṛttim
abudhyamānaḥ kurupāṇḍavāgryaḥ sambhūya
sarvaiḥ ca jitaḥ api yasmāt
paścāt ca yat kaitavam abhyupetaḥ
44. That pure-minded one (Yudhishthira), the foremost of the Kurus and Pandavas, not comprehending the nature of deceit, was conquered even by all (of them) combined. And because he subsequently accepted that fraudulent outcome...
तिष्ठन्ति चेमे कुरवः सभायामीशाः सुतानां च तथा स्नुषाणाम् ।
समीक्ष्य सर्वे मम चापि वाक्यं विब्रूत मे प्रश्नमिमं यथावत् ॥४५॥
45. tiṣṭhanti ceme kuravaḥ sabhāyā;mīśāḥ sutānāṁ ca tathā snuṣāṇām ,
samīkṣya sarve mama cāpi vākyaṁ; vibrūta me praśnamimaṁ yathāvat.

īśāḥ sutānām ca tathā snuṣāṇām
samīkṣya sarve mama ca api vākyam

45. These Kurus are present in this assembly, and they are the masters of their sons and likewise of their daughters-in-law. Having considered my words, all of you should properly answer this question of mine.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा ब्रुवन्तीं करुणं रुदन्तीमवेक्षमाणामसकृत्पतींस्तान् ।
दुःशासनः परुषाण्यप्रियाणि वाक्यान्युवाचामधुराणि चैव ॥४६॥
46. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathā bruvantīṁ karuṇaṁ rudantī;mavekṣamāṇāmasakṛtpatīṁstān ,
duḥśāsanaḥ paruṣāṇyapriyāṇi; vākyānyuvācāmadhurāṇi caiva.
46. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tathā bruvantīm
karuṇam rudantīm avekṣamāṇām asakṛt
patīn tān duḥśāsanaḥ paruṣāṇi apriyāṇi

46. Vaiśampāyana said: To her who was speaking so mournfully, weeping, and repeatedly looking at those husbands, Duḥśāsana spoke harsh, unpleasant, and bitter words.
तां कृष्यमाणां च रजस्वलां च स्रस्तोत्तरीयामतदर्हमाणाम् ।
वृकोदरः प्रेक्ष्य युधिष्ठिरं च चकार कोपं परमार्तरूपः ॥४७॥
47. tāṁ kṛṣyamāṇāṁ ca rajasvalāṁ ca; srastottarīyāmatadarhamāṇām ,
vṛkodaraḥ prekṣya yudhiṣṭhiraṁ ca; cakāra kopaṁ paramārtarūpaḥ.

srasta uttarīyām a tat arhamāṇām

47. When Vṛkodara (Bhīma) saw her being dragged while menstruating, with her upper garment fallen, and undeserving of such treatment, he then looked at Yudhiṣṭhira and, in a state of extreme distress, became furious.
