पितर ऊचुः ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
श्रुत्वा च तत्तथा कार्यं भवता द्विजसत्तम ॥१॥
1. pitara ūcuḥ ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
śrutvā ca tattathā kāryaṁ bhavatā dvijasattama.
1. pitaraḥ ūcuḥ atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam purātanam
śrutvā ca tat tathā kāryam bhavatā dvijasattama
1. The ancestors said: 'Here, they also cite this ancient narrative (itihāsa). And having heard that, O best among brahmins (dvija), it should be done by you accordingly.'
अलर्को नाम राजर्षिरभवत्सुमहातपाः ।
धर्मज्ञः सत्यसंधश्च महात्मा सुमहाव्रतः ॥२॥
2. alarko nāma rājarṣirabhavatsumahātapāḥ ,
dharmajñaḥ satyasaṁdhaśca mahātmā sumahāvrataḥ.
2. alarkaḥ nāma rājarṣiḥ abhavat sumahātapāḥ
dharma-jñaḥ satya-sandhaḥ ca mahātmā sumahāvrataḥ
2. alarkaḥ nāma rājarṣiḥ sumahātapāḥ dharma-jñaḥ
satya-sandhaḥ mahātmā sumahāvrataḥ ca abhavat
2. There was a royal sage named Alarka, who possessed great asceticism, was knowledgeable in natural law (dharma), truthful to his commitments, a great soul, and of very great vows.
स सागरान्तां धनुषा विनिर्जित्य महीमिमाम् ।
कृत्वा सुदुष्करं कर्म मनः सूक्ष्मे समादधे ॥३॥
3. sa sāgarāntāṁ dhanuṣā vinirjitya mahīmimām ,
kṛtvā suduṣkaraṁ karma manaḥ sūkṣme samādadhe.
3. saḥ sāgarāntām dhanuṣā vinirjitya mahīm imām
kṛtvā suduṣkaram karma manaḥ sūkṣme samādhadhe
3. saḥ dhanuṣā sāgarāntām imām mahīm vinirjitya
suduṣkaram karma kṛtvā sūkṣme manaḥ samādhadhe
3. Having completely conquered this earth, extending to the oceans, with his bow, and having performed a very difficult action (karma), he then focused his mind on the subtle.
स्थितस्य वृक्षमूलेऽथ तस्य चिन्ता बभूव ह ।
उत्सृज्य सुमहद्राज्यं सूक्ष्मं प्रति महामते ॥४॥
4. sthitasya vṛkṣamūle'tha tasya cintā babhūva ha ,
utsṛjya sumahadrājyaṁ sūkṣmaṁ prati mahāmate.
4. sthitasya vṛkṣa-mūle atha tasya cintā babhūva ha
utsṛjya sumahat rājyam sūkṣmam prati mahāmate
4. atha vṛkṣa-mūle sthitasya tasya mahāmateḥ cintā babhūva ha
(iti yat) sumahat rājyam utsṛjya sūkṣmam prati (mama manaḥ)
4. Then, as that great-minded one was situated at the foot of a tree, a thought indeed arose in him: 'Having abandoned a very great kingdom, [my focus is now] on the subtle.'
अलर्क उवाच ।
मनसो मे बलं जातं मनो जित्वा ध्रुवो जयः ।
अन्यत्र बाणानस्यामि शत्रुभिः परिवारितः ॥५॥
5. alarka uvāca ,
manaso me balaṁ jātaṁ mano jitvā dhruvo jayaḥ ,
anyatra bāṇānasyāmi śatrubhiḥ parivāritaḥ.
5. alarkaḥ uvāca manasaḥ me balam jātam manaḥ jitvā
dhruvaḥ jayaḥ anyatra bāṇān asyāmi śatrubhiḥ parivāritaḥ
5. alarkaḥ uvāca (yat) me manasaḥ balam jātam.
manaḥ jitvā jayaḥ dhruvaḥ (bhavati).
anyatra (aham) śatrubhiḥ parivāritaḥ bāṇān asyāmi.
5. Alarka said: 'Strength has arisen in my mind. By conquering the mind (manas), victory is certain. Otherwise, if surrounded by enemies, I would be discharging arrows.'
यदिदं चापलान्मूर्तेः सर्वमेतच्चिकीर्षति ।
मनः प्रति सुतीक्ष्णाग्रानहं मोक्ष्यामि सायकान् ॥६॥
6. yadidaṁ cāpalānmūrteḥ sarvametaccikīrṣati ,
manaḥ prati sutīkṣṇāgrānahaṁ mokṣyāmi sāyakān.
6. yadi idam cāpalāt mūrteḥ sarvam etat cikirṣati
manaḥ prati sutīkṣṇāgrān aham mokṣyāmi sāyakān
6. idam manaḥ yadi mūrteḥ cāpalāt etat sarvam cikīrṣati
aham manaḥ prati sutīkṣṇāgrān sāyakān mokṣyāmi
6. Since this mind desires to do all these things due to the body's impulsiveness, I will unleash my very sharp-pointed arrows against the mind.
मन उवाच ।
नेमे बाणास्तरिष्यन्ति मामलर्क कथंचन ।
तवैव मर्म भेत्स्यन्ति भिन्नमर्मा मरिष्यसि ॥७॥
7. mana uvāca ,
neme bāṇāstariṣyanti māmalarka kathaṁcana ,
tavaiva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi.
7. manaḥ uvāca na ime bāṇāḥ tariṣyanti mām alarka kathaṃcana
tava eva marma bhetsyanti bhinna-marmā mariṣyasi
7. manaḥ uvāca alarka ime bāṇāḥ kathaṃcana mām na tariṣyanti
tava eva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi
7. The mind said: 'O Alarka, these arrows will certainly not overcome me in any way. Rather, they will pierce your own vital parts (marman), and with your vital parts pierced, you will die.'
अन्यान्बाणान्समीक्षस्व यैस्त्वं मां सूदयिष्यसि ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा स विचिन्त्याथ ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. anyānbāṇānsamīkṣasva yaistvaṁ māṁ sūdayiṣyasi ,
tacchrutvā sa vicintyātha tato vacanamabravīt.
8. anyān bāṇān samīkṣasva yaiḥ tvam mām sūdayiṣyasi
tat śrutvā sa vicintya atha tataḥ vacanam abravīt
8. anyān bāṇān samīkṣasva yaiḥ mām sūdayiṣyasi sa
tat śrutvā atha vicintya tataḥ vacanam abravīt
8. Find other arrows by which you intend to defeat me. Having heard that, he (Alarka) pondered and then spoke these words.
अलर्क उवाच ।
आघ्राय सुबहून्गन्धांस्तानेव प्रतिगृध्यति ।
तस्माद्घ्राणं प्रति शरान्प्रतिमोक्ष्याम्यहं शितान् ॥९॥
9. alarka uvāca ,
āghrāya subahūngandhāṁstāneva pratigṛdhyati ,
tasmādghrāṇaṁ prati śarānpratimokṣyāmyahaṁ śitān.
9. alarka uvāca āghrāya subahūn gandhān tān eva pratigṛdhyati
tasmāt ghrāṇam prati śarān pratimokṣyāmi aham śitān
9. alarka uvāca āghrāya subahūn gandhān tān eva pratigṛdhyati
tasmāt aham ghrāṇam prati śitān śarān pratimokṣyāmi
9. Alarka said: 'Having smelled many fragrances, (the mind) greedily clings to those very same ones. Therefore, I will release my sharpened arrows against the sense of smell (ghrāṇa).'
घ्राण उवाच ।
नेमे बाणास्तरिष्यन्ति मामलर्क कथंचन ।
तवैव मर्म भेत्स्यन्ति भिन्नमर्मा मरिष्यसि ॥१०॥
10. ghrāṇa uvāca ,
neme bāṇāstariṣyanti māmalarka kathaṁcana ,
tavaiva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi.
10. ghrāṇa uvāca | na ime bāṇāḥ tariṣyanti mām alarka kathaṃcana
| tava eva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi
10. The Nose said: 'These arrows, Alarka, will certainly not penetrate me. Rather, they will pierce your own vital points, and with your vital points thus wounded, you will die.'
अन्यान्बाणान्समीक्षस्व यैस्त्वं मां सूदयिष्यसि ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा स विचिन्त्याथ ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. anyānbāṇānsamīkṣasva yaistvaṁ māṁ sūdayiṣyasi ,
tacchrutvā sa vicintyātha tato vacanamabravīt.
11. anyān bāṇān samīkṣasva yaiḥ tvam mām sūdayiṣyasi |
tat śrutvā sa vicintya atha tataḥ vacanam abravīt
11. 'Consider other arrows by which you might destroy me.' Having heard that, he (Alarka), after reflecting, then spoke these words.
अलर्क उवाच ।
इयं स्वादून्रसान्भुक्त्वा तानेव प्रतिगृध्यति ।
तस्माज्जिह्वां प्रति शरान्प्रतिमोक्ष्याम्यहं शितान् ॥१२॥
12. alarka uvāca ,
iyaṁ svādūnrasānbhuktvā tāneva pratigṛdhyati ,
tasmājjihvāṁ prati śarānpratimokṣyāmyahaṁ śitān.
12. alarka uvāca | iyam svādūn rasān bhuktvā tān eva pratigṛdhyati
| tasmāt jihvām prati śarān pratimokṣyāmi aham śitān
12. Alarka said: 'This (tongue), having once enjoyed sweet tastes, then greedily craves those very same ones again. Therefore, I will release sharpened arrows towards the tongue.'
जिह्वोवाच ।
नेमे बाणास्तरिष्यन्ति मामलर्क कथंचन ।
तवैव मर्म भेत्स्यन्ति भिन्नमर्मा मरिष्यसि ॥१३॥
13. jihvovāca ,
neme bāṇāstariṣyanti māmalarka kathaṁcana ,
tavaiva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi.
13. jihvā uvāca | na ime bāṇāḥ tariṣyanti mām alarka kathaṃcana
| tava eva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi
13. The Tongue said: 'These arrows, Alarka, will certainly not penetrate me. Rather, they will pierce your own vital points, and with your vital points thus wounded, you will die.'
अन्यान्बाणान्समीक्षस्व यैस्त्वं मां सूदयिष्यसि ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा स विचिन्त्याथ ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१४॥
14. anyānbāṇānsamīkṣasva yaistvaṁ māṁ sūdayiṣyasi ,
tacchrutvā sa vicintyātha tato vacanamabravīt.

14. Look for other arrows by which you intend to kill me. Having heard that, he pondered and then spoke these words.
अलर्क उवाच ।
स्पृष्ट्वा त्वग्विविधान्स्पर्शांस्तानेव प्रतिगृध्यति ।
तस्मात्त्वचं पाटयिष्ये विविधैः कङ्कपत्रिभिः ॥१५॥
15. alarka uvāca ,
spṛṣṭvā tvagvividhānsparśāṁstāneva pratigṛdhyati ,
tasmāttvacaṁ pāṭayiṣye vividhaiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ.
15. alarkaḥ uvāca spṛṣṭvā tvak vividhān sparśān tān eva
pratigṛdhyati tasmāt tvacam pāṭayiṣye vividhaiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ
15. alarkaḥ uvāca tvak vividhān sparśān spṛṣṭvā tān eva
pratigṛdhyati tasmāt vividhaiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ tvacam pāṭayiṣye
15. Alarka said: 'Having come into contact with various objects of touch, the skin yearns only for those. Therefore, I will pierce your skin with various arrows, those feathered with heron quills.'
त्वगुवाच ।
नेमे बाणास्तरिष्यन्ति मामलर्क कथंचन ।
तवैव मर्म भेत्स्यन्ति भिन्नमर्मा मरिष्यसि ॥१६॥
16. tvaguvāca ,
neme bāṇāstariṣyanti māmalarka kathaṁcana ,
tavaiva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi.
16. tvak uvāca na ime bāṇāḥ tariṣyanti mām alarka kathaṃcana
tava eva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi
16. tvak uvāca alarka ime bāṇāḥ mām kathaṃcana na tariṣyanti
tava eva marma bhetsyanti tvam bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi
16. The Skin said: 'These arrows, Alarka, will certainly not harm me. They will only pierce your own vital points. With your vital points pierced, you will die.'
अन्यान्बाणान्समीक्षस्व यैस्त्वं मां सूदयिष्यसि ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा स विचिन्त्याथ ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१७॥
17. anyānbāṇānsamīkṣasva yaistvaṁ māṁ sūdayiṣyasi ,
tacchrutvā sa vicintyātha tato vacanamabravīt.

17. Look for other arrows by which you intend to kill me. Having heard that, he pondered and then spoke these words.
अलर्क उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा वै विविधाञ्शब्दांस्तानेव प्रतिगृध्यति ।
तस्माच्छ्रोत्रं प्रति शरान्प्रतिमोक्ष्याम्यहं शितान् ॥१८॥
18. alarka uvāca ,
śrutvā vai vividhāñśabdāṁstāneva pratigṛdhyati ,
tasmācchrotraṁ prati śarānpratimokṣyāmyahaṁ śitān.
18. alarka uvāca | śrutvā vai vividhān śabdān tān eva pratigṛdhyati
| tasmāt śrotram prati śarān pratimokṣyāmi aham śitān
18. alarka uvāca śrutvā vai vividhān śabdān tān eva pratigṛdhyati
tasmāt aham śitān śarān śrotram prati pratimokṣyāmi
18. Alarka said: "Indeed, having heard various sounds, one becomes attached to them alone. Therefore, I will release sharpened arrows towards the ear."
श्रोत्र उवाच ।
नेमे बाणास्तरिष्यन्ति मामलर्क कथंचन ।
तवैव मर्म भेत्स्यन्ति ततो हास्यसि जीवितम् ॥१९॥
19. śrotra uvāca ,
neme bāṇāstariṣyanti māmalarka kathaṁcana ,
tavaiva marma bhetsyanti tato hāsyasi jīvitam.
19. śrotra uvāca | na ime bāṇāḥ tariṣyanti mām alarka kathaṃcana
| tava eva marma bhetsyanti tataḥ hāsyasi jīvitam
19. śrotra uvāca alarka,
ime bāṇāḥ mām kathaṃcana na tariṣyanti te tava eva marma bhetsyanti tataḥ tvam jīvitam hāsyasi
19. The Ear said: "These arrows, Alarka, will by no means overcome me. They will pierce your very vital spots, and then you will lose your life."
अन्यान्बाणान्समीक्षस्व यैस्त्वं मां सूदयिष्यसि ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा स विचिन्त्याथ ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. anyānbāṇānsamīkṣasva yaistvaṁ māṁ sūdayiṣyasi ,
tacchrutvā sa vicintyātha tato vacanamabravīt.
20. anyān bāṇān samīkṣasva yaiḥ tvam mām sūdayiṣyasi |
tat śrutvā saḥ vicintya atha tataḥ vacanam abravīt
20. tvam yaiḥ mām sūdayiṣyasi,
anyān bāṇān samīkṣasva tat śrutvā saḥ atha vicintya tataḥ vacanam abravīt
20. "Consider other arrows, with which you might destroy me. Having heard that, he (Alarka) then pondered and spoke these words."
अलर्क उवाच ।
दृष्ट्वा वै विविधान्भावांस्तानेव प्रतिगृध्यति ।
तस्माच्चक्षुः प्रति शरान्प्रतिमोक्ष्याम्यहं शितान् ॥२१॥
21. alarka uvāca ,
dṛṣṭvā vai vividhānbhāvāṁstāneva pratigṛdhyati ,
tasmāccakṣuḥ prati śarānpratimokṣyāmyahaṁ śitān.
21. alarka uvāca | dṛṣṭvā vai vividhān bhāvān tān eva pratigṛdhyati
| tasmāt cakṣuḥ prati śarān pratimokṣyāmi aham śitān
21. alarka uvāca dṛṣṭvā vai vividhān bhāvān tān eva pratigṛdhyati
tasmāt aham śitān śarān cakṣuḥ prati pratimokṣyāmi
21. Alarka said: "Indeed, having seen various forms, one becomes attached to them alone. Therefore, I will release sharpened arrows towards the eye."
चक्षुरुवाच ।
नेमे बाणास्तरिष्यन्ति मामलर्क कथंचन ।
तवैव मर्म भेत्स्यन्ति भिन्नमर्मा मरिष्यसि ॥२२॥
22. cakṣuruvāca ,
neme bāṇāstariṣyanti māmalarka kathaṁcana ,
tavaiva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi.
22. cakṣuḥ uvāca na ime bāṇāḥ tariṣyanti mām alarka kathaṃcana
tava eva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi
22. The Eye said: 'These arrows, O Alarka, will not pierce me in any way. They will, in fact, pierce your own vital points (marmam), and with your vital points shattered, you will die.'
अन्यान्बाणान्समीक्षस्व यैस्त्वं मां सूदयिष्यसि ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा स विचिन्त्याथ ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२३॥
23. anyānbāṇānsamīkṣasva yaistvaṁ māṁ sūdayiṣyasi ,
tacchrutvā sa vicintyātha tato vacanamabravīt.
23. anyān bāṇān samīkṣasva yaiḥ tvam mām sūdayiṣyasi
tat śrutvā sa vicintya atha tataḥ vacanam abravīt
23. 'Consider other arrows with which you will destroy me.' Having heard that, he (Alarka) reflected, and then spoke these words.
अलर्क उवाच ।
इयं निष्ठा बहुविधा प्रज्ञया त्वध्यवस्यति ।
तस्माद्बुद्धिं प्रति शरान्प्रतिमोक्ष्याम्यहं शितान् ॥२४॥
24. alarka uvāca ,
iyaṁ niṣṭhā bahuvidhā prajñayā tvadhyavasyati ,
tasmādbuddhiṁ prati śarānpratimokṣyāmyahaṁ śitān.
24. alarka uvāca iyam niṣṭhā bahuvidhā prajñayā tu adhyavasyati
tasmāt buddhim prati śarān pratimokṣyāmi aham śitān
24. Alarka said: 'This multi-faceted resolution (niṣṭhā) is indeed understood through wisdom (prajñā). Therefore, I will unleash sharp arrows upon the intellect (buddhi).'
बुद्धिरुवाच ।
नेमे बाणास्तरिष्यन्ति मामलर्क कथंचन ।
तवैव मर्म भेत्स्यन्ति भिन्नमर्मा मरिष्यसि ॥२५॥
25. buddhiruvāca ,
neme bāṇāstariṣyanti māmalarka kathaṁcana ,
tavaiva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi.
25. buddhiḥ uvāca na ime bāṇāḥ tariṣyanti mām alarka
kathaṃcana tava eva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi
25. The Intellect (buddhi) said: 'These arrows, O Alarka, will not pierce me in any way. They will, in fact, pierce your own vital points (marmam), and with your vital points shattered, you will die.'
पितर ऊचुः ।
ततोऽलर्कस्तपो घोरमास्थायाथ सुदुष्करम् ।
नाध्यगच्छत्परं शक्त्या बाणमेतेषु सप्तसु ।
सुसमाहितचेतास्तु ततोऽचिन्तयत प्रभुः ॥२६॥
26. pitara ūcuḥ ,
tato'larkastapo ghoramāsthāyātha suduṣkaram ,
nādhyagacchatparaṁ śaktyā bāṇameteṣu saptasu ,
susamāhitacetāstu tato'cintayata prabhuḥ.
26. pitaraḥ ūcuḥ | tataḥ alarkaḥ tapaḥ ghoram
āsthāya atha suduşkaram | na adhyagacchat
param śaktyā bāṇam eteṣu saptasu |
susamāhitacetāḥ tu tataḥ acintayata prabhuḥ
26. pitaraḥ ūcuḥ tataḥ alarkaḥ ghoram suduşkaram tapaḥ āsthāya,
śaktyā eteṣu saptasu param bāṇam na adhyagacchat tu susamāhitacetāḥ prabhuḥ tataḥ acintayata
26. The ancestors (Pitṛs) said: Then Alarka, having undertaken severe and extremely difficult asceticism (tapas), was unable to attain the supreme arrow among these seven by his own power. But the lord, with a very well-concentrated mind, then deliberated.
स विचिन्त्य चिरं कालमलर्को द्विजसत्तम ।
नाध्यगच्छत्परं श्रेयो योगान्मतिमतां वरः ॥२७॥
27. sa vicintya ciraṁ kālamalarko dvijasattama ,
nādhyagacchatparaṁ śreyo yogānmatimatāṁ varaḥ.
27. sa vicintya ciram kālam alarkaḥ dvijasattama | na
adhyagacchat param śreyaḥ yogāt matimatām varaḥ
27. dvijasattama saḥ matimatām varaḥ alarkaḥ ciram kālam vicintya,
yogāt param śreyaḥ na adhyagacchat
27. O best among the twice-born (dvijas), having pondered for a long time, Alarka, the foremost among the intelligent, did not attain the supreme well-being (śreyas) through (yoga).
स एकाग्रं मनः कृत्वा निश्चलो योगमास्थितः ।
इन्द्रियाणि जघानाशु बाणेनैकेन वीर्यवान् ।
योगेनात्मानमाविश्य संसिद्धिं परमां ययौ ॥२८॥
28. sa ekāgraṁ manaḥ kṛtvā niścalo yogamāsthitaḥ ,
indriyāṇi jaghānāśu bāṇenaikena vīryavān ,
yogenātmānamāviśya saṁsiddhiṁ paramāṁ yayau.
28. sa ekāgram manaḥ kṛtvā niścalaḥ yogam
āsthitaḥ | indriyāṇi jaghāna āśu
bāṇena ekena vīryavān | yogena
ātmānam āviśya saṃsiddhim paramām yayau
28. saḥ ekāgram manaḥ kṛtvā,
niścalaḥ yogam āsthitaḥ vīryavān āśu ekena bāṇena indriyāṇi jaghāna yogena ātmānam āviśya paramām saṃsiddhim yayau
28. He, having made his mind one-pointed and unwavering, resorted to (yoga). The powerful one swiftly conquered his senses (indriyas) with a single arrow. Through (yoga), having entered into his inner self (ātman), he attained the highest perfection.
विस्मितश्चापि राजर्षिरिमां गाथां जगाद ह ।
अहो कष्टं यदस्माभिः पूर्वं राज्यमनुष्ठितम् ।
इति पश्चान्मया ज्ञातं योगान्नास्ति परं सुखम् ॥२९॥
29. vismitaścāpi rājarṣirimāṁ gāthāṁ jagāda ha ,
aho kaṣṭaṁ yadasmābhiḥ pūrvaṁ rājyamanuṣṭhitam ,
iti paścānmayā jñātaṁ yogānnāsti paraṁ sukham.
29. vismitaḥ ca api rājarṣiḥ imām gāthām
jagāda ha | aho kaṣṭam yat asmābhiḥ
pūrvam rājyam anuṣṭhitam | iti paścāt
mayā jñātam yogāt na asti param sukham
29. vismitaḥ rājarṣiḥ ca api imām gāthām
ha jagāda aho kaṣṭam yat pūrvam
asmābhiḥ rājyam anuṣṭhitam iti paścāt
mayā jñātam yogāt param sukham na asti
29. The astonished royal sage (rājarṣi) indeed spoke this verse: "Alas, how lamentable that kingship was formerly practiced by us! Thus, it was known by me later that there is no supreme happiness (sukha) beyond (yoga)."
इति त्वमपि जानीहि राम मा क्षत्रियाञ्जहि ।
तपो घोरमुपातिष्ठ ततः श्रेयोऽभिपत्स्यसे ॥३०॥
30. iti tvamapi jānīhi rāma mā kṣatriyāñjahi ,
tapo ghoramupātiṣṭha tataḥ śreyo'bhipatsyase.
30. iti tvam api jānīhi rāma mā kṣatriyān jahi
tapaḥ ghoram upātiṣṭha tataḥ śreyaḥ abhipatsyase
30. rāma tvam api jānīhi iti mā kṣatriyān jahi
ghoram tapaḥ upātiṣṭha tataḥ śreyaḥ abhipatsyase
30. Therefore, O Rāma, understand this as well: do not kill the kṣatriyas. Undertake severe asceticism (tapas); then you will attain prosperity.
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः स तपो घोरं जामदग्न्यः पितामहैः ।
आस्थितः सुमहाभागो ययौ सिद्धिं च दुर्गमाम् ॥३१॥
31. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ sa tapo ghoraṁ jāmadagnyaḥ pitāmahaiḥ ,
āsthitaḥ sumahābhāgo yayau siddhiṁ ca durgamām.
31. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ saḥ tapaḥ ghoram jāmadagnyaḥ
pitāmahaiḥ āsthitaḥ sumahābhāgaḥ yayau siddhim ca durgamām
31. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca pitāmahaiḥ iti uktaḥ saḥ jāmadagnyaḥ
sumahābhāgaḥ ghoram tapaḥ āsthitaḥ durgamām siddhim ca yayau
31. The Brahmin said: Thus addressed by his grandfathers, Jāmadagnya, the greatly fortunate one, undertook severe asceticism (tapas) and attained a hard-to-reach accomplishment (siddhi).
