नारद उवाच ।
तथैव सा श्रियं त्यक्त्वा कन्या भूत्वा यशस्विनी ।
माधवी गालवं विप्रमन्वयात्सत्यसंगरा ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
tathaiva sā śriyaṁ tyaktvā kanyā bhūtvā yaśasvinī ,
mādhavī gālavaṁ vipramanvayātsatyasaṁgarā.

1. Nārada said: Similarly, Māadhavī, glorious (yaśasvinī) and firm in her vows (satyasaṃgarā), having abandoned her opulence (śriyam) and having become a maiden (kanyā) again, followed the Brahmin Gālava.
गालवो विमृशन्नेव स्वकार्यगतमानसः ।
जगाम भोजनगरं द्रष्टुमौशीनरं नृपम् ॥२॥
2. gālavo vimṛśanneva svakāryagatamānasaḥ ,
jagāma bhojanagaraṁ draṣṭumauśīnaraṁ nṛpam.
2. gālavaḥ vimṛśan eva svakāryagatamānasaḥ
jagāma bhojanagaram draṣṭum auśīnaram nṛpam
2. Gālava, reflecting intently and with his mind focused on his own task, went to the city of Bhoja to see King Auśīnara.
तमुवाचाथ गत्वा स नृपतिं सत्यविक्रमम् ।
इयं कन्या सुतौ द्वौ ते जनयिष्यति पार्थिवौ ॥३॥
3. tamuvācātha gatvā sa nṛpatiṁ satyavikramam ,
iyaṁ kanyā sutau dvau te janayiṣyati pārthivau.
3. tam uvāca atha gatvā saḥ nṛpatim satyavikramam
iyam kanyā sutau dvau te janayiṣyati pārthivau
3. Then, having approached that king of true valor, he said, "This daughter will bear you two sons who will become kings."
अस्यां भवानवाप्तार्थो भविता प्रेत्य चेह च ।
सोमार्कप्रतिसंकाशौ जनयित्वा सुतौ नृप ॥४॥
4. asyāṁ bhavānavāptārtho bhavitā pretya ceha ca ,
somārkapratisaṁkāśau janayitvā sutau nṛpa.
4. asyām bhavān avāptārthaḥ bhavitā pretya ca iha
ca somārkapratisaṃkāśau janayitvā sutau nṛpa
4. O King, by begetting two sons who will resemble the moon and the sun, you will achieve your purpose both in this world and in the afterlife.
शुल्कं तु सर्वधर्मज्ञ हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम् ।
एकतःश्यामकर्णानां देयं मह्यं चतुःशतम् ॥५॥
5. śulkaṁ tu sarvadharmajña hayānāṁ candravarcasām ,
ekataḥśyāmakarṇānāṁ deyaṁ mahyaṁ catuḥśatam.
5. śulkam tu sarvadharmajña hayānām candravarcasām
ekataḥśyāmakarṇānām deyam mahyam catuḥ śatam
5. But, O knower of all (dharma), a bridal price of four hundred horses, which are of moon-like splendor and have one black ear, is to be given to me.
गुर्वर्थोऽयं समारम्भो न हयैः कृत्यमस्ति मे ।
यदि शक्यं महाराज क्रियतां मा विचार्यताम् ॥६॥
6. gurvartho'yaṁ samārambho na hayaiḥ kṛtyamasti me ,
yadi śakyaṁ mahārāja kriyatāṁ mā vicāryatām.
6. gurvarthaḥ ayam samārambhaḥ na hayaiḥ kṛtyam asti
me yadi śakyam mahārāja kriyatām mā vicāryatām
6. This undertaking is for the sake of the (guru); I have no use for horses. If it is possible, O great king, let it be done; do not hesitate (or ponder too much).
अनपत्योऽसि राजर्षे पुत्रौ जनय पार्थिव ।
पितॄन्पुत्रप्लवेन त्वमात्मानं चैव तारय ॥७॥
7. anapatyo'si rājarṣe putrau janaya pārthiva ,
pitṝnputraplavena tvamātmānaṁ caiva tāraya.
7. anapatyaḥ asi rājarṣe putrau janaya pārthiva
pitṝn putraplavena tvam ātmānam ca eva tāraya
7. O royal sage, you are childless. O king, beget two sons. Indeed, you must save your ancestors (pitṝn) and your own self (ātman) by means of the boat of sons.
न पुत्रफलभोक्ता हि राजर्षे पात्यते दिवः ।
न याति नरकं घोरं यत्र गच्छन्त्यनात्मजाः ॥८॥
8. na putraphalabhoktā hi rājarṣe pātyate divaḥ ,
na yāti narakaṁ ghoraṁ yatra gacchantyanātmajāḥ.
8. na putraphalabhoktā hi rājarṣe pātyate divaḥ na
yāti narakaṃ ghoram yatra gacchanti anātmajāḥ
8. Indeed, O royal sage, one who reaps the fruit of sons is not made to fall from heaven. He does not go to the dreadful hell where the childless (anātmajāḥ) go.
एतच्चान्यच्च विविधं श्रुत्वा गालवभाषितम् ।
उशीनरः प्रतिवचो ददौ तस्य नराधिपः ॥९॥
9. etaccānyacca vividhaṁ śrutvā gālavabhāṣitam ,
uśīnaraḥ prativaco dadau tasya narādhipaḥ.
9. etat ca anyat ca vividham śrutvā gālavabhāṣitam
uśīnaraḥ prativacaḥ dadau tasya narādhipaḥ
9. Having heard this, as well as the various other words spoken by Gālava, King Uśīnara, the ruler of men, gave him a reply.
श्रुतवानस्मि ते वाक्यं यथा वदसि गालव ।
विधिस्तु बलवान्ब्रह्मन्प्रवणं हि मनो मम ॥१०॥
10. śrutavānasmi te vākyaṁ yathā vadasi gālava ,
vidhistu balavānbrahmanpravaṇaṁ hi mano mama.
10. śrutavān asmi te vākyaṃ yathā vadasi gālava
vidhiḥ tu balavān brahman pravaṇaṃ hi manaḥ mama
10. O Gālava, I have heard your words just as you spoke them. But, O Brahmin, fate (vidhiḥ) is indeed powerful, and my mind is truly disposed (to it).
शते द्वे तु ममाश्वानामीदृशानां द्विजोत्तम ।
इतरेषां सहस्राणि सुबहूनि चरन्ति मे ॥११॥
11. śate dve tu mamāśvānāmīdṛśānāṁ dvijottama ,
itareṣāṁ sahasrāṇi subahūni caranti me.
11. śate dve tu mama aśvānām īdṛśānām dvijottama
itareṣām sahasrāṇi subahūni caranti me
11. O best among brahmins, I indeed have two hundred such horses. And many thousands of other horses graze for me.
अहमप्येकमेवास्यां जनयिष्यामि गालव ।
पुत्रं द्विज गतं मार्गं गमिष्यामि परैरहम् ॥१२॥
12. ahamapyekamevāsyāṁ janayiṣyāmi gālava ,
putraṁ dvija gataṁ mārgaṁ gamiṣyāmi parairaham.
12. aham api ekam eva asyām janayiṣyāmi gālava
putram dvija gatam mārgam gamiṣyāmi paraiḥ aham
12. O Gālava, I too will beget only one son through her. O brahmin, after that, I will traverse the path (saṃsāra) that others have taken.
मूल्येनापि समं कुर्यां तवाहं द्विजसत्तम ।
पौरजानपदार्थं तु ममार्थो नात्मभोगतः ॥१३॥
13. mūlyenāpi samaṁ kuryāṁ tavāhaṁ dvijasattama ,
paurajānapadārthaṁ tu mamārtho nātmabhogataḥ.
13. mūlyena api samam kuryām tava aham dvijasattama
paurajānapada artham tu mama arthaḥ na ātma-bhogataḥ
13. O best among brahmins, I would indeed make (my offer) equal to your demand by its full value. However, my resources (artha) are for the sake of the city dwellers and country people, not for my own self-enjoyment.
कामतो हि धनं राजा पारक्यं यः प्रयच्छति ।
न स धर्मेण धर्मात्मन्युज्यते यशसा न च ॥१४॥
14. kāmato hi dhanaṁ rājā pārakyaṁ yaḥ prayacchati ,
na sa dharmeṇa dharmātmanyujyate yaśasā na ca.
14. kāmataḥ hi dhanam rājā pārakyam yaḥ prayacchati
na saḥ dharmeṇa dharmātman yujyate yaśasā na ca
14. O virtuous soul (dharmātman), that king who willfully gives away the property of others is not associated with righteousness (dharma) nor with fame.
सोऽहं प्रतिग्रहीष्यामि ददात्वेतां भवान्मम ।
कुमारीं देवगर्भाभामेकपुत्रभवाय मे ॥१५॥
15. so'haṁ pratigrahīṣyāmi dadātvetāṁ bhavānmama ,
kumārīṁ devagarbhābhāmekaputrabhavāya me.
15. saḥ aham pratigrahīṣyāmi dadātu etām bhavān
mama kumārīm devagarbhābhām ekaputrabhāvāya me
15. Therefore, I will accept her. May your honor give me this maiden, who resembles one carrying a divine embryo, for the purpose of obtaining a single son.
तथा तु बहुकल्याणमुक्तवन्तं नराधिपम् ।
उशीनरं द्विजश्रेष्ठो गालवः प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥१६॥
16. tathā tu bahukalyāṇamuktavantaṁ narādhipam ,
uśīnaraṁ dvijaśreṣṭho gālavaḥ pratyapūjayat.
16. tathā tu bahukalyāṇam uktavantam narādhipam
uśīnaram dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ gālavaḥ pratyapūjayat
16. Thus, Galava, the foremost among the twice-born (dvija), in turn honored King Ushinara, who had spoken many auspicious words.
उशीनरं प्रतिग्राह्य गालवः प्रययौ वनम् ।
रेमे स तां समासाद्य कृतपुण्य इव श्रियम् ॥१७॥
17. uśīnaraṁ pratigrāhya gālavaḥ prayayau vanam ,
reme sa tāṁ samāsādya kṛtapuṇya iva śriyam.
17. uśīnaram pratigrāhya gālavaḥ prayayau vanam
reme saḥ tām samāsādya kṛtapuṇyaḥ iva śriyam
17. After accepting (the maiden) from Ushinara, Galava went to the forest. Having obtained her, he rejoiced just like a meritorious person (kṛtapuṇya) would enjoy prosperity (Śrī).
कन्दरेषु च शैलानां नदीनां निर्झरेषु च ।
उद्यानेषु विचित्रेषु वनेषूपवनेषु च ॥१८॥
18. kandareṣu ca śailānāṁ nadīnāṁ nirjhareṣu ca ,
udyāneṣu vicitreṣu vaneṣūpavaneṣu ca.
18. kandareṣu ca śailānām nadīnām nirjhareṣu
ca udyāneṣu vicitreṣu vaneṣu upavaneṣu ca
18. In the caves of mountains, in the waterfalls of rivers, in diverse and beautiful gardens, and in forests and groves.
हर्म्येषु रमणीयेषु प्रासादशिखरेषु च ।
वातायनविमानेषु तथा गर्भगृहेषु च ॥१९॥
19. harmyeṣu ramaṇīyeṣu prāsādaśikhareṣu ca ,
vātāyanavimāneṣu tathā garbhagṛheṣu ca.
19. harmyeṣu ramaṇīyeṣu prāsādaśikhareṣu ca
vātāyanavimāneṣu tathā garbhagṛheṣu ca
19. In pleasant mansions, on palace rooftops, and also in aerial chariots and inner chambers.
ततोऽस्य समये जज्ञे पुत्रो बालरविप्रभः ।
शिबिर्नाम्नाभिविख्यातो यः स पार्थिवसत्तमः ॥२०॥
20. tato'sya samaye jajñe putro bālaraviprabhaḥ ,
śibirnāmnābhivikhyāto yaḥ sa pārthivasattamaḥ.
20. tataḥ asya samaye jajñe putraḥ bālaraviprabhaḥ
śibiḥ nāmnā abhivikhyātaḥ yaḥ saḥ pārthivasattamaḥ
20. Then, in due course, a son was born to him, radiant like the morning sun. He was widely known by the name Śibi, who was that best among kings.
उपस्थाय स तं विप्रो गालवः प्रतिगृह्य च ।
कन्यां प्रयातस्तां राजन्दृष्टवान्विनतात्मजम् ॥२१॥
21. upasthāya sa taṁ vipro gālavaḥ pratigṛhya ca ,
kanyāṁ prayātastāṁ rājandṛṣṭavānvinatātmajam.
21. upasthāya saḥ tam vipraḥ gālavaḥ pratigṛhya ca
kanyām prayātaḥ tām rājan dṛṣṭavān vinatātmajam
21. That Brahmin Gālava, having approached him, and having accepted the maiden, O king, then went forth and saw the son (ātmaja) of Vinatā (Garuḍa).
