सूत उवाच ।
एलापत्रस्य तु वचः श्रुत्वा नागा द्विजोत्तम ।
सर्वे प्रहृष्टमनसः साधु साध्वित्यपूजयन् ॥१॥
1. sūta uvāca ,
elāpatrasya tu vacaḥ śrutvā nāgā dvijottama ,
sarve prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sādhu sādhvityapūjayan.
1. sūtaḥ uvāca | elāpatrasya tu vacaḥ śrutvā nāgāḥ dvijottama
| sarve prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sādhu sādhu iti apūjayan
1. Sūta said: "O best of Brahmins, upon hearing the words of Elāpatra, all the Nāgas, with delighted minds, praised him, saying, 'Excellent! Excellent!'"
ततः प्रभृति तां कन्यां वासुकिः पर्यरक्षत ।
जरत्कारुं स्वसारं वै परं हर्षमवाप च ॥२॥
2. tataḥ prabhṛti tāṁ kanyāṁ vāsukiḥ paryarakṣata ,
jaratkāruṁ svasāraṁ vai paraṁ harṣamavāpa ca.
2. tataḥ prabhṛti tām kanyām vāsukiḥ paryarakṣata
| jaratkārum svasāram vai param harṣam avāpa ca
2. From that time onwards, Vāsuki protected that maiden, Jaratkāru, his own sister, and he attained supreme joy.
ततो नातिमहान्कालः समतीत इवाभवत् ।
अथ देवासुराः सर्वे ममन्थुर्वरुणालयम् ॥३॥
3. tato nātimahānkālaḥ samatīta ivābhavat ,
atha devāsurāḥ sarve mamanthurvaruṇālayam.
3. tataḥ na ati mahān kālaḥ samatītaḥ iva abhavat
| atha devāsurāḥ sarve mamanthuḥ varuṇālayam
3. Then, not much time seemed to have passed. After that, all the Devas and Asuras churned the ocean (the abode of Varuṇa).
तत्र नेत्रमभून्नागो वासुकिर्बलिनां वरः ।
समाप्यैव च तत्कर्म पितामहमुपागमन् ॥४॥
4. tatra netramabhūnnāgo vāsukirbalināṁ varaḥ ,
samāpyaiva ca tatkarma pitāmahamupāgaman.
4. tatra netram abhūt nāgaḥ vāsukiḥ balinām varaḥ
| samāpya eva ca tat karma pitāmaham upāgaman
4. There, Vāsuki, the best of the strong, became the rope (for churning). Having completed that task, they all approached Brahmā.
देवा वासुकिना सार्धं पितामहमथाब्रुवन् ।
भगवञ्शापभीतोऽयं वासुकिस्तप्यते भृशम् ॥५॥
5. devā vāsukinā sārdhaṁ pitāmahamathābruvan ,
bhagavañśāpabhīto'yaṁ vāsukistapyate bhṛśam.
5. devāḥ vāsukinā sārdham pitāmaham atha abruvan |
bhagavan śāpabhītaḥ ayam vāsukiḥ tapyate bhṛśam
5. Then the Devas, along with Vāsuki, spoke to Brahmā: "O Lord, this Vāsuki is greatly tormented, fearing a curse."
तस्येदं मानसं शल्यं समुद्धर्तुं त्वमर्हसि ।
जनन्याः शापजं देव ज्ञातीनां हितकाङ्क्षिणः ॥६॥
6. tasyedaṁ mānasaṁ śalyaṁ samuddhartuṁ tvamarhasi ,
jananyāḥ śāpajaṁ deva jñātīnāṁ hitakāṅkṣiṇaḥ.
6. tasya idam mānasam śalyam samuddhārtum tvam arhasi
jananyāḥ śāpajam deva jñātīnām hitakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
6. O god, you should remove this mental dart of his, which is born from his mother's curse concerning his well-wishing kinsmen.
हितो ह्ययं सदास्माकं प्रियकारी च नागराट् ।
कुरु प्रसादं देवेश शमयास्य मनोज्वरम् ॥७॥
7. hito hyayaṁ sadāsmākaṁ priyakārī ca nāgarāṭ ,
kuru prasādaṁ deveśa śamayāsya manojvaram.
7. hitaḥ hi ayam sadā asmākam priyakārī ca nāgarāṭ
kuru prasādam deveśa śamaya asya manojvaram
7. Indeed, this Nāgarāja is always beneficial and benevolent to us. O Lord of gods, please show your favor and pacify his mental distress.
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
मयैवैतद्वितीर्णं वै वचनं मनसामराः ।
एलापत्रेण नागेन यदस्याभिहितं पुरा ॥८॥
8. brahmovāca ,
mayaivaitadvitīrṇaṁ vai vacanaṁ manasāmarāḥ ,
elāpatreṇa nāgena yadasyābhihitaṁ purā.
8. brahmā uvāca mayā eva etat vitīrṇam vai vacanam manasā
amarāḥ elāpatreṇa nāgena yat asya abhihitam purā
8. Brahmā said: 'O Immortals, this very statement, which was formerly spoken by the Nāga Elāpatra to him mentally, was indeed granted by me.'
तत्करोत्वेष नागेन्द्रः प्राप्तकालं वचस्तथा ।
विनशिष्यन्ति ये पापा न तु ये धर्मचारिणः ॥९॥
9. tatkarotveṣa nāgendraḥ prāptakālaṁ vacastathā ,
vinaśiṣyanti ye pāpā na tu ye dharmacāriṇaḥ.
9. tat karotu eṣaḥ nāgendraḥ prāptakālam vacaḥ tathā
vinaśiṣyanti ye pāpāḥ na tu ye dharmacāriṇaḥ
9. Therefore, let this king of serpents carry out that opportune statement. Those who are sinful will perish, but not those who follow dharma.
उत्पन्नः स जरत्कारुस्तपस्युग्रे रतो द्विजः ।
तस्यैष भगिनीं काले जरत्कारुं प्रयच्छतु ॥१०॥
10. utpannaḥ sa jaratkārustapasyugre rato dvijaḥ ,
tasyaiṣa bhaginīṁ kāle jaratkāruṁ prayacchatu.
10. utpannaḥ saḥ jaratkāruḥ tapasi ugre rataḥ dvijaḥ
tasya eṣaḥ bhaginīm kāle jaratkārum prayacchatu
10. That brahmin named Jarathkāru, who is devoted to severe penance, has been born. Let this (Nāga) give his sister, Jarathkāru, to him (the brahmin) at the proper time.
यदेलापत्रेण वचस्तदोक्तं भुजगेन ह ।
पन्नगानां हितं देवास्तत्तथा न तदन्यथा ॥११॥
11. yadelāpatreṇa vacastadoktaṁ bhujagena ha ,
pannagānāṁ hitaṁ devāstattathā na tadanyathā.
11. yat elāpatreṇa vacaḥ tadā uktaṃ bhujagena ha
pannagānāṃ hitaṃ devāḥ tat tathā na tat anyathā
11. O gods, the words then spoken by Elapatra, the serpent, are indeed for the welfare of the serpents. That is precisely the truth, and it cannot be otherwise.
सूत उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स नागेन्द्रः पितामहवचस्तदा ।
सर्पान्बहूञ्जरत्कारौ नित्ययुक्तान्समादधत् ॥१२॥
12. sūta uvāca ,
etacchrutvā sa nāgendraḥ pitāmahavacastadā ,
sarpānbahūñjaratkārau nityayuktānsamādadhat.
12. sūtaḥ uvāca etat śrutvā saḥ nāgendraḥ pitāmahavacas
tadā sarpān bahūn jaratkārau nityayuktān samādadhat
12. Sūta said: Having heard this, that king of serpents then assigned many vigilant serpents to Jaratkāru's service.
जरत्कारुर्यदा भार्यामिच्छेद्वरयितुं प्रभुः ।
शीघ्रमेत्य ममाख्येयं तन्नः श्रेयो भविष्यति ॥१३॥
13. jaratkāruryadā bhāryāmicchedvarayituṁ prabhuḥ ,
śīghrametya mamākhyeyaṁ tannaḥ śreyo bhaviṣyati.
13. jaratkāruḥ yadā bhāryām icchet varayituṃ prabhuḥ
śīghram etya mama ākhyeyaṃ tat naḥ śreyaḥ bhaviṣyati
13. When Jaratkāru, the capable one, desires to choose a wife, you must quickly come and inform me. That will be for our benefit.
