युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
नामृतस्येव पर्याप्तिर्ममास्ति ब्रुवति त्वयि ।
तस्मात्कथय भूयस्त्वं धर्ममेव पितामह ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
nāmṛtasyeva paryāptirmamāsti bruvati tvayi ,
tasmātkathaya bhūyastvaṁ dharmameva pitāmaha.
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca na amṛtasya iva paryāptiḥ mama asti
bruvati tvayi tasmāt kathaya bhūyaḥ tvam dharmam eva pitāmaha
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca tvayi bruvati mama paryāptiḥ amṛtasya
iva na asti tasmāt pitāmaha tvam bhūyaḥ dharmam eva kathaya
1. Yudhishthira said: As you speak, my satisfaction is never enough, as if it were nectar. Therefore, O grandfather, please speak further about the natural law (dharma).
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
गौतमस्य च संवादं यमस्य च महात्मनः ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
gautamasya ca saṁvādaṁ yamasya ca mahātmanaḥ.
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam
purātanam gautamasya ca saṃvādam yamasya ca mahātmanaḥ
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atra api imam purātanam itihāsam
gautamasya ca mahātmanaḥ yamasya ca saṃvādam udāharanti
2. Bhishma said: In this regard, they also cite this ancient narrative (itihāsa), the dialogue between Gautama and the great-souled Yama.
पारियात्रगिरिं प्राप्य गौतमस्याश्रमो महान् ।
उवास गौतमो यत्र कालं तदपि मे शृणु ॥३॥
3. pāriyātragiriṁ prāpya gautamasyāśramo mahān ,
uvāsa gautamo yatra kālaṁ tadapi me śṛṇu.
3. pāriyātragirim prāpya gautamasya āśramaḥ mahān
uvāsa gautamaḥ yatra kālam tat api me śṛṇu
3. me tat kālam api śṛṇu yatra pāriyātragirim
prāpya gautamasya mahān āśramaḥ gautamaḥ uvāsa
3. Now, hear from me about that time when, upon reaching the Pāriyātra mountain, there was a great hermitage belonging to Gautama, where Gautama himself resided.
षष्टिं वर्षसहस्राणि सोऽतप्यद्गौतमस्तपः ।
तमुग्रतपसं युक्तं तपसा भावितं मुनिम् ॥४॥
4. ṣaṣṭiṁ varṣasahasrāṇi so'tapyadgautamastapaḥ ,
tamugratapasaṁ yuktaṁ tapasā bhāvitaṁ munim.
4. ṣaṣṭim varṣasahasrāṇi saḥ atapyat gautamaḥ tapaḥ
tam ugratapasam yuktam tapasā bhāvitam munim
4. saḥ gautamaḥ ṣaṣṭim varṣasahasrāṇi tapaḥ atapyat.
tam ugratapasam tapasā bhāvitam yuktam munim.
4. For sixty thousand years, Gautama performed asceticism (tapas). He was that sage (muni) characterized by intense asceticism (tapas), disciplined (yoga), and purified by his spiritual practice (tapas).
उपयातो नरव्याघ्र लोकपालो यमस्तदा ।
तमपश्यत्सुतपसमृषिं वै गौतमं मुनिम् ॥५॥
5. upayāto naravyāghra lokapālo yamastadā ,
tamapaśyatsutapasamṛṣiṁ vai gautamaṁ munim.
5. upayātaḥ naravyāghra lokapālaḥ yamaḥ tadā
tam apaśyat sutapasam ṛṣim vai gautamam munim
5. naravyāghra,
tadā lokapālaḥ yamaḥ upayātaḥ.
tam sutapasam ṛṣim vai gautamam munim apaśyat.
5. O tiger among men, then Yama, the guardian of the world, approached (him). He (Yama) saw that highly ascetic (tapasvin) sage, Gautama, the great renunciant (muni).
स तं विदित्वा ब्रह्मर्षिर्यममागतमोजसा ।
प्राञ्जलिः प्रयतो भूत्वा उपसृप्तस्तपोधनः ॥६॥
6. sa taṁ viditvā brahmarṣiryamamāgatamojasā ,
prāñjaliḥ prayato bhūtvā upasṛptastapodhanaḥ.
6. saḥ tam viditvā brahmarṣiḥ yamam āgatam ojasā
prāñjaliḥ prayataḥ bhūtvā upasṛptaḥ tapodhanaḥ
6. saḥ brahmarṣiḥ tapodhanaḥ tam ojasā āgatam yamam viditvā,
prāñjaliḥ prayataḥ bhūtvā upasṛptaḥ.
6. That Brāhmaṇa sage (brahmarṣi), whose wealth was asceticism (tapas), upon recognizing Yama who had arrived with great power, became reverent and, with clasped hands, approached him.
तं धर्मराजो दृष्ट्वैव नमस्कृत्य नरर्षभम् ।
न्यमन्त्रयत धर्मेण क्रियतां किमिति ब्रुवन् ॥७॥
7. taṁ dharmarājo dṛṣṭvaiva namaskṛtya nararṣabham ,
nyamantrayata dharmeṇa kriyatāṁ kimiti bruvan.
7. tam dharmarājaḥ dṛṣṭvā eva namaskṛtya nararṣabham
nyamantrayata dharmeṇa kriyatām kim iti bruvan
7. dharmarājaḥ tam nararṣabham dṛṣṭvā eva namaskṛtya
dharmeṇa kim kriyatām iti bruvan nyamantrayata
7. Having seen that best among men and saluted him, Yama, the King of natural law (dharma), invited him, saying, 'What is it that should be done?'
गौतम उवाच ।
मातापितृभ्यामानृण्यं किं कृत्वा समवाप्नुयात् ।
कथं च लोकानश्नाति पुरुषो दुर्लभाञ्शुभान् ॥८॥
8. gautama uvāca ,
mātāpitṛbhyāmānṛṇyaṁ kiṁ kṛtvā samavāpnuyāt ,
kathaṁ ca lokānaśnāti puruṣo durlabhāñśubhān.
8. gautamaḥ uvāca mātāpitṛbhyām ānṛṇyam kim kṛtvā samavāpnuyāt
katham ca lokān aśnāti puruṣaḥ durlabhān śubhān
8. gautamaḥ uvāca.
kim kṛtvā mātāpitṛbhyām ānṛṇyam samavāpnuyāt? ca katham puruṣaḥ durlabhān śubhān lokān aśnāti?
8. Gautama said: "Having done what, may one attain freedom from debt to one's parents? And how does a person (puruṣa) obtain auspicious worlds that are otherwise difficult to reach?"
यम उवाच ।
तपःशौचवता नित्यं सत्यधर्मरतेन च ।
मातापित्रोरहरहः पूजनं कार्यमञ्जसा ॥९॥
9. yama uvāca ,
tapaḥśaucavatā nityaṁ satyadharmaratena ca ,
mātāpitroraharahaḥ pūjanaṁ kāryamañjasā.
9. yamaḥ uvāca tapaḥśaucavatā nityam satyadharmaratena
ca mātāpitroḥ aharahaḥ pūjanam kāryam añjasā
9. yamaḥ uvāca.
tapaḥśaucavatā nityam satyadharmaratena ca mātāpitroḥ aharahaḥ pūjanam añjasā kāryam
9. Yama said: "By one who possesses austerity (tapas) and purity, and who is constantly devoted to truth and natural law (dharma), the service of parents should be performed properly day after day."
अश्वमेधैश्च यष्टव्यं बहुभिः स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः ।
तेन लोकानुपाश्नाति पुरुषोऽद्भुतदर्शनान् ॥१०॥
10. aśvamedhaiśca yaṣṭavyaṁ bahubhiḥ svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ,
tena lokānupāśnāti puruṣo'dbhutadarśanān.
10. aśvamedhaiḥ ca yaṣṭavyam bahubhiḥ svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ
tena lokān upāśnāti puruṣaḥ adbhutadarśanān
10. ca bahubhiḥ svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ aśvamedhaiḥ yaṣṭavyam.
tena puruṣaḥ adbhutadarśanān lokān upāśnāti
10. And many Aśvamedha sacrifices, accompanied by ample donations, should be performed. Through that, a person (puruṣa) obtains worlds of wondrous appearance.
