युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
सत्यं क्षमां दमं प्रज्ञां प्रशंसन्ति पितामह ।
विद्वांसो मनुजा लोके कथमेतन्मतं तव ॥१॥

Yudhishthira said: O Grandsire, wise people in the world praise truth, patience, self-control, and wisdom. What is your opinion on this matter?
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्येऽहमितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
साध्यानामिह संवादं हंसस्य च युधिष्ठिर ॥२॥

2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atra te vartayiṣye'hamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,

Bhishma said: O Yudhishthira, in this matter, I shall relate to you an ancient narrative, the conversation between Hamsa and the Sadhyas.
हंसो भूत्वाथ सौवर्णस्त्वजो नित्यः प्रजापतिः ।
स वै पर्येति लोकांस्त्रीनथ साध्यानुपागमत् ॥३॥

3. haṁso bhūtvātha sauvarṇastvajo nityaḥ prajāpatiḥ ,

Having then become a golden swan (Hamsa), Prajapati, who is unborn and eternal, indeed traverses the three worlds, and then approached the Sadhyas.
साध्या ऊचुः ।
शकुने वयं स्म देवा वै साध्यास्त्वामनुयुज्महे ।
पृच्छामस्त्वां मोक्षधर्मं भवांश्च किल मोक्षवित् ॥४॥
शकुने वयं स्म देवा वै साध्यास्त्वामनुयुज्महे ।
पृच्छामस्त्वां मोक्षधर्मं भवांश्च किल मोक्षवित् ॥४॥
4. sādhyā ūcuḥ ,
śakune vayaṁ sma devā vai sādhyāstvāmanuyujmahe ,
pṛcchāmastvāṁ mokṣadharmaṁ bhavāṁśca kila mokṣavit.

The Sādhyas said: "O bird, we are indeed gods, the Sādhyas, and we approach you. We ask you about the natural law (dharma) of liberation (mokṣa), for you are indeed a knower of liberation (mokṣa)."
श्रुतोऽसि नः पण्डितो धीरवादी साधुशब्दः पतते ते पतत्रिन् ।
किं मन्यसे श्रेष्ठतमं द्विज त्वं कस्मिन्मनस्ते रमते महात्मन् ॥५॥

5. śruto'si naḥ paṇḍito dhīravādī; sādhuśabdaḥ patate te patatrin ,
kiṁ manyase śreṣṭhatamaṁ dvija tvaṁ; kasminmanaste ramate mahātman.

śrutaḥ asi naḥ paṇḍitaḥ dhīravādī
sādhūśabdaḥ patate te patatrin

naḥ śrutaḥ asi paṇḍitaḥ dhīravādī he

"We have heard you are a learned one who speaks gravely, and your good reputation spreads, O bird. What do you, O twice-born (dvija), consider the most excellent? In what does your mind find delight, O great soul (mahātman)?"
तन्नः कार्यं पक्षिवर प्रशाधि यत्कार्याणां मन्यसे श्रेष्ठमेकम् ।
यत्कृत्वा वै पुरुषः सर्वबन्धैर्विमुच्यते विहगेन्द्रेह शीघ्रम् ॥६॥

6. tannaḥ kāryaṁ pakṣivara praśādhi; yatkāryāṇāṁ manyase śreṣṭhamekam ,
yatkṛtvā vai puruṣaḥ sarvabandhai;rvimucyate vihagendreha śīghram.

tat naḥ kāryam pakṣivara praśādhi

he pakṣivara tat naḥ kāryam praśādhi
yat (tvam) kāryāṇām ekam śreṣṭham
manyase yat kṛtvā vai puruṣaḥ iha
sarvabandhaiḥ śīghram vimucyate he vihagendra
yat (tvam) kāryāṇām ekam śreṣṭham
manyase yat kṛtvā vai puruṣaḥ iha

6.
"Therefore, O best of birds, instruct us regarding that single action which you consider the most excellent among all actions. By performing which, a person (puruṣa) is indeed quickly liberated from all bonds, O chief of birds, in this world."
हंस उवाच ।
इदं कार्यममृताशाः शृणोमि तपो दमः सत्यमात्माभिगुप्तिः ।
ग्रन्थीन्विमुच्य हृदयस्य सर्वान्प्रियाप्रिये स्वं वशमानयीत ॥७॥
इदं कार्यममृताशाः शृणोमि तपो दमः सत्यमात्माभिगुप्तिः ।
ग्रन्थीन्विमुच्य हृदयस्य सर्वान्प्रियाप्रिये स्वं वशमानयीत ॥७॥
7. haṁsa uvāca ,
idaṁ kāryamamṛtāśāḥ śṛṇomi; tapo damaḥ satyamātmābhiguptiḥ ,
granthīnvimucya hṛdayasya sarvā;npriyāpriye svaṁ vaśamānayīta.
idaṁ kāryamamṛtāśāḥ śṛṇomi; tapo damaḥ satyamātmābhiguptiḥ ,
granthīnvimucya hṛdayasya sarvā;npriyāpriye svaṁ vaśamānayīta.

haṃsaḥ uvāca he amṛtāśāḥ idam kāryam
śṛṇomi tapaḥ damaḥ satyam ātmābhiguptiḥ
(astīti) hṛdayasya sarvān granthīn
vimucya priyāpriye svam vaśam ānayīta
śṛṇomi tapaḥ damaḥ satyam ātmābhiguptiḥ
(astīti) hṛdayasya sarvān granthīn
vimucya priyāpriye svam vaśam ānayīta

The Swan said: "O seekers of immortality, I convey this course of action: ascetic discipline (tapas), self-control, truthfulness, and guarding one's own self (ātman-abhigupti). Having loosened all the knots of the heart, one should bring both likes and dislikes under one's own control."
नारुंतुदः स्यान्न नृशंसवादी न हीनतः परमभ्याददीत ।
ययास्य वाचा पर उद्विजेत न तां वदेद्रुशतीं पापलोक्याम् ॥८॥

8. nāruṁtudaḥ syānna nṛśaṁsavādī; na hīnataḥ paramabhyādadīta ,
yayāsya vācā para udvijeta; na tāṁ vadedruśatīṁ pāpalokyām.

na arumtudaḥ syāt na nṛśaṃsavādī
na hīnataḥ param abhyādadīta
yayā asya vācā paraḥ udvijeta

yayā asya vācā paraḥ udvijeta
na tām vadet ruśatīm pāpalokyām

arumtudaḥ na syāt na nṛśaṃsavādī
na hīnataḥ param abhyādadīta
yayā asya vācā paraḥ udvijeta
tām ruśatīm pāpalokyām na vadet
na hīnataḥ param abhyādadīta
yayā asya vācā paraḥ udvijeta
tām ruśatīm pāpalokyām na vadet

One should not be a tormentor, nor a cruel speaker. One should not basely appropriate anything from another. One should not utter words by which another might be agitated, words that are harsh and lead to harm.
वाक्सायका वदनान्निष्पतन्ति यैराहतः शोचति रात्र्यहानि ।
परस्य नामर्मसु ते पतन्ति तान्पण्डितो नावसृजेत्परेषु ॥९॥

9. vāksāyakā vadanānniṣpatanti; yairāhataḥ śocati rātryahāni ,
parasya nāmarmasu te patanti; tānpaṇḍito nāvasṛjetpareṣu.

vāksāyakāḥ vadanāt niṣpatanti
yaiḥ āhataḥ śocati rātryahāni
parasya na amarmasu te patanti
tān paṇḍitaḥ na avasṛjet pareṣu
yaiḥ āhataḥ śocati rātryahāni
parasya na amarmasu te patanti
tān paṇḍitaḥ na avasṛjet pareṣu
9.
vadanāt vāksāyakāḥ niṣpatanti
yaiḥ āhataḥ rātryahāni śocati
te parasya na amarmasu patanti
paṇḍitaḥ tān pareṣu na avasṛjet
yaiḥ āhataḥ rātryahāni śocati
te parasya na amarmasu patanti
paṇḍitaḥ tān pareṣu na avasṛjet
9.
Word-arrows shoot forth from the mouth; wounded by them, one grieves night and day. They fall upon the vital spots of another. A wise person should not unleash such (arrows) upon others.
परश्चेदेनमतिवादबाणैर्भृशं विध्येच्छम एवेह कार्यः ।
संरोष्यमाणः प्रतिमृष्यते यः स आदत्ते सुकृतं वै परस्य ॥१०॥

10. paraścedenamativādabāṇai;rbhṛśaṁ vidhyecchama eveha kāryaḥ ,
saṁroṣyamāṇaḥ pratimṛṣyate yaḥ; sa ādatte sukṛtaṁ vai parasya.
saṁroṣyamāṇaḥ pratimṛṣyate yaḥ; sa ādatte sukṛtaṁ vai parasya.
10.
paraḥ cet enam ativādabāṇaiḥ
bhṛśam vidhyet kṣamaḥ eva iha kāryaḥ
saṃroṣyamāṇaḥ pratimṛṣyate
yaḥ saḥ ādatte sukṛtam vai parasya
bhṛśam vidhyet kṣamaḥ eva iha kāryaḥ
saṃroṣyamāṇaḥ pratimṛṣyate
yaḥ saḥ ādatte sukṛtam vai parasya
10.
cet paraḥ enam ativādabāṇaiḥ
bhṛśam vidhyet iha kṣamaḥ eva kāryaḥ
yaḥ saṃroṣyamāṇaḥ pratimṛṣyate
saḥ parasya sukṛtam vai ādatte
bhṛśam vidhyet iha kṣamaḥ eva kāryaḥ
yaḥ saṃroṣyamāṇaḥ pratimṛṣyate
saḥ parasya sukṛtam vai ādatte
10.
If another person pierces him fiercely with arrows of excessive speech (abusive words), then only forbearance (kṣama) should be practiced here. Indeed, he who, though being reviled, forgives, that person certainly takes the spiritual merit (sukṛta) of the other.
क्षेपाभिमानादभिषङ्गव्यलीकं निगृह्णाति ज्वलितं यश्च मन्युम् ।
अदुष्टचेता मुदितोऽनसूयुः स आदत्ते सुकृतं वै परेषाम् ॥११॥

11. kṣepābhimānādabhiṣaṅgavyalīkaṁ; nigṛhṇāti jvalitaṁ yaśca manyum ,
aduṣṭacetā mudito'nasūyuḥ; sa ādatte sukṛtaṁ vai pareṣām.
aduṣṭacetā mudito'nasūyuḥ; sa ādatte sukṛtaṁ vai pareṣām.

kṣepābhimānāt abhiṣaṅgavyalīkam
nigṛhṇāti yaḥ ca jvalitam manyum
aduṣṭacetāḥ muditaḥ anasūyuḥ
saḥ ādatte sukṛtam vai pareṣām
nigṛhṇāti yaḥ ca jvalitam manyum
aduṣṭacetāḥ muditaḥ anasūyuḥ
saḥ ādatte sukṛtam vai pareṣām

yaḥ ca kṣepābhimānāt abhiṣaṅgavyalīkam
jvalitam manyum nigṛhṇāti
saḥ aduṣṭacetāḥ muditaḥ anasūyuḥ
pareṣām sukṛtam vai ādatte
jvalitam manyum nigṛhṇāti
saḥ aduṣṭacetāḥ muditaḥ anasūyuḥ
pareṣām sukṛtam vai ādatte
11.
And he who checks the offense and injury that arises from scornful pride, and also blazing anger (manyu); that person, having an uncorrupted mind, being cheerful and free from envy, indeed takes the spiritual merit (sukṛta) of others.
आक्रुश्यमानो न वदामि किंचित्क्षमाम्यहं ताड्यमानश्च नित्यम् ।
श्रेष्ठं ह्येतत्क्षममप्याहुरार्याः सत्यं तथैवार्जवमानृशंस्यम् ॥१२॥
श्रेष्ठं ह्येतत्क्षममप्याहुरार्याः सत्यं तथैवार्जवमानृशंस्यम् ॥१२॥
12. ākruśyamāno na vadāmi kiṁci;tkṣamāmyahaṁ tāḍyamānaśca nityam ,
śreṣṭhaṁ hyetatkṣamamapyāhurāryāḥ; satyaṁ tathaivārjavamānṛśaṁsyam.
śreṣṭhaṁ hyetatkṣamamapyāhurāryāḥ; satyaṁ tathaivārjavamānṛśaṁsyam.
12.
ākruśyamānaḥ na vadāmi kiṃcit kṣamāmi
aham tāḍyamānaḥ ca nityam | śreṣṭham
hi etat kṣamam api āhuḥ āryāḥ
satyam tathā eva ārjavam ānṛśaṃsyam
aham tāḍyamānaḥ ca nityam | śreṣṭham
hi etat kṣamam api āhuḥ āryāḥ
satyam tathā eva ārjavam ānṛśaṃsyam
12.
aham ākruśyamānaḥ na kiṃcit vadāmi,
ca tāḍyamānaḥ nityam kṣamāmi.
hi āryāḥ etat kṣamam api satyam tathā eva ārjavam ānṛśaṃsyam ca śreṣṭham āhuḥ.
ca tāḍyamānaḥ nityam kṣamāmi.
hi āryāḥ etat kṣamam api satyam tathā eva ārjavam ānṛśaṃsyam ca śreṣṭham āhuḥ.
12.
When I am reviled, I do not say anything. When I am struck, I constantly forgive. Indeed, the noble ones declare this forbearance (kṣamā) to be supreme, as are truth (satya), straightforwardness, and compassion.
वेदस्योपनिषत्सत्यं सत्यस्योपनिषद्दमः ।
दमस्योपनिषन्मोक्ष एतत्सर्वानुशासनम् ॥१३॥

13. vedasyopaniṣatsatyaṁ satyasyopaniṣaddamaḥ ,
damasyopaniṣanmokṣa etatsarvānuśāsanam.

vedasya upaniṣat satyam satyasya upaniṣat damaḥ
| damasya upaniṣat mokṣaḥ etat sarvānuśāsanam

satyasya upaniṣat damaḥ,
damasya upaniṣat mokṣaḥ.

13.
The essence of the Veda is truth (satya). The essence of truth (satya) is self-control. The essence of self-control is liberation (mokṣa). This is the sum of all teachings.
वाचो वेगं मनसः क्रोधवेगं विवित्सावेगमुदरोपस्थवेगम् ।
एतान्वेगान्यो विषहत्युदीर्णांस्तं मन्येऽहं ब्राह्मणं वै मुनिं च ॥१४॥
एतान्वेगान्यो विषहत्युदीर्णांस्तं मन्येऽहं ब्राह्मणं वै मुनिं च ॥१४॥
14. vāco vegaṁ manasaḥ krodhavegaṁ; vivitsāvegamudaropasthavegam ,
etānvegānyo viṣahatyudīrṇāṁ;staṁ manye'haṁ brāhmaṇaṁ vai muniṁ ca.
etānvegānyo viṣahatyudīrṇāṁ;staṁ manye'haṁ brāhmaṇaṁ vai muniṁ ca.
14.
vācaḥ vegam manasaḥ krodhavegam
vivitsāvegam udaraupasthavegam |
etān vegān yaḥ viṣahati udīrṇān tam
manye aham brāhmaṇam vai munim ca
vivitsāvegam udaraupasthavegam |
etān vegān yaḥ viṣahati udīrṇān tam
manye aham brāhmaṇam vai munim ca
14.
yaḥ vācaḥ vegam,
manasaḥ vegam,
krodhavegam,
vivitsāvegam,
udaraupasthavegam,
etān udīrṇān vegān viṣahati,
tam aham vai brāhmaṇam munim ca manye.
manasaḥ vegam,
krodhavegam,
vivitsāvegam,
udaraupasthavegam,
etān udīrṇān vegān viṣahati,
tam aham vai brāhmaṇam munim ca manye.
14.
I consider that person to be a true Brahmin and a sage (muni) who can withstand these strong urges: the urge of speech, the urge of the mind, the urge of anger, the urge of curiosity, and the urges of the belly and the genitals.
अक्रोधनः क्रुध्यतां वै विशिष्टस्तथा तितिक्षुरतितिक्षोर्विशिष्टः ।
अमानुषान्मानुषो वै विशिष्टस्तथाज्ञानाज्ज्ञानवान्वै प्रधानः ॥१५॥
अमानुषान्मानुषो वै विशिष्टस्तथाज्ञानाज्ज्ञानवान्वै प्रधानः ॥१५॥
15. akrodhanaḥ krudhyatāṁ vai viśiṣṭa;stathā titikṣuratitikṣorviśiṣṭaḥ ,
amānuṣānmānuṣo vai viśiṣṭa;stathājñānājjñānavānvai pradhānaḥ.
amānuṣānmānuṣo vai viśiṣṭa;stathājñānājjñānavānvai pradhānaḥ.
15.
akrodhanaḥ krudhyatām vai viśiṣṭaḥ
tathā titikṣuḥ atitikṣoḥ viśiṣṭaḥ
| amānuṣāt mānuṣaḥ vai viśiṣṭaḥ
tathā ajñānāt jñānavān vai pradhānaḥ
tathā titikṣuḥ atitikṣoḥ viśiṣṭaḥ
| amānuṣāt mānuṣaḥ vai viśiṣṭaḥ
tathā ajñānāt jñānavān vai pradhānaḥ
15.
krudhyatām akrodhanaḥ vai viśiṣṭaḥ.
tathā atitikṣoḥ titikṣuḥ (vai) viśiṣṭaḥ.
amānuṣāt mānuṣaḥ vai viśiṣṭaḥ.
tathā ajñānāt jñānavān vai pradhānaḥ.
tathā atitikṣoḥ titikṣuḥ (vai) viśiṣṭaḥ.
amānuṣāt mānuṣaḥ vai viśiṣṭaḥ.
tathā ajñānāt jñānavān vai pradhānaḥ.

Among those who are angry, one who is not angry is indeed superior. Similarly, one who is forbearing is superior to one who is not forbearing. A human being (mānuṣa) is superior to non-humans. Likewise, a knowledgeable person is indeed preeminent over an ignorant one.

One who is being insulted should not retaliate with insults. The very anger of the patient person consumes the one who insults, and the good deeds of that abuser are acquired by him (the patient one).
यो नात्युक्तः प्राह रूक्षं प्रियं वा यो वा हतो न प्रतिहन्ति धैर्यात् ।
पापं च यो नेच्छति तस्य हन्तुस्तस्मै देवाः स्पृहयन्ते सदैव ॥१७॥

He who, though greatly provoked, does not speak harshly or even kindly in return; or he who, when struck, does not retaliate with patience; and he who does not wish evil upon his assailant - the gods always yearn for such a person.
पापीयसः क्षमेतैव श्रेयसः सदृशस्य च ।
विमानितो हतोऽऽक्रुष्ट एवं सिद्धिं गमिष्यति ॥१८॥

One should certainly forgive the inferior (wicked), the superior, and also one's equal. He who, despite being insulted, struck, or reviled, acts in this manner (i.e., with forgiveness) will attain success.
सदाहमार्यान्निभृतोऽप्युपासे न मे विवित्सा न च मेऽस्ति रोषः ।
न चाप्यहं लिप्समानः परैमि न चैव किंचिद्विषमेण यामि ॥१९॥

I always attend upon the noble ones, even while being humble. I have no excessive curiosity, nor do I harbor any anger. I do not pursue things with the desire to acquire them, nor do I ever obtain anything through unfair means.
नाहं शप्तः प्रतिशपामि किंचिद्दमं द्वारं ह्यमृतस्येह वेद्मि ।
गुह्यं ब्रह्म तदिदं वो ब्रवीमि न मानुषाच्छ्रेष्ठतरं हि किंचित् ॥२०॥

I do not curse back anyone who curses me, for I know that self-control (dama) is indeed the gateway to immortality in this world. This secret ultimate reality (brahman) I declare to you: nothing is superior to a human being.
विमुच्यमानः पापेभ्यो घनेभ्य इव चन्द्रमाः ।
विरजाः कालमाकाङ्क्षन्धीरो धैर्येण सिध्यति ॥२१॥

21.
Like the moon becoming free from clouds, a wise (dhīra) person, being liberated from sins, becomes free from impurities, and desiring the appropriate time (for final liberation), succeeds through perseverance.
यः सर्वेषां भवति ह्यर्चनीय उत्सेचने स्तम्भ इवाभिजातः ।
यस्मै वाचं सुप्रशस्तां वदन्ति स वै देवान्गच्छति संयतात्मा ॥२२॥

saḥ saṃyatātmā vai devān gacchati hi.

22.
One who becomes venerable to all, like a well-born (ābhijāta) pillar in a raised structure, and to whom people speak highly commendable words - that self-controlled (saṃyatātman) person indeed goes to the gods.
न तथा वक्तुमिच्छन्ति कल्याणान्पुरुषे गुणान् ।
यथैषां वक्तुमिच्छन्ति नैर्गुण्यमनुयुञ्जकाः ॥२३॥

Those who find fault (anuyuñjakāḥ) are not as eager to speak of the good qualities in a person as they are to speak of their flaws (nirguṇya).
यस्य वाङ्मनसी गुप्ते सम्यक्प्रणिहिते सदा ।
वेदास्तपश्च त्यागश्च स इदं सर्वमाप्नुयात् ॥२४॥

He whose speech and mind are always well-controlled and guarded, and who practices the sacred texts (Vedas), ascetic discipline (tapas), and renunciation, he shall attain all of this.
आक्रोशनावमानाभ्यामबुधाद्वर्धते बुधः ।
तस्मान्न वर्धयेदन्यं न चात्मानं विहिंसयेत् ॥२५॥

A wise person (budha) prospers from the abuse and insult directed by an ignorant individual. Therefore, one should neither elevate another (by reacting to their negativity) nor harm oneself (ātman).
अमृतस्येव संतृप्येदवमानस्य वै द्विजः ।
सुखं ह्यवमतः शेते योऽवमन्ता स नश्यति ॥२६॥

Indeed, a twice-born (dvija) should be as satisfied by insult as if it were nectar. For one who is insulted sleeps happily, while the insulter himself perishes.
यत्क्रोधनो यजते यद्ददाति यद्वा तपस्तप्यति यज्जुहोति ।
वैवस्वतस्तद्धरतेऽस्य सर्वं मोघः श्रमो भवति क्रोधनस्य ॥२७॥

27. yatkrodhano yajate yaddadāti; yadvā tapastapyati yajjuhoti ,
vaivasvatastaddharate'sya sarvaṁ; moghaḥ śramo bhavati krodhanasya.

27.
Whatever a wrathful person performs as a Vedic ritual (yajña), whatever he gives, or whatever ascetic discipline (tapas) he undertakes, and whatever he offers in a fire ritual, Yama, the son of Vivasvān, takes away all of that. All the effort of such a wrathful person becomes futile.
चत्वारि यस्य द्वाराणि सुगुप्तान्यमरोत्तमाः ।
उपस्थमुदरं हस्तौ वाक्चतुर्थी स धर्मवित् ॥२८॥

28.
O best among immortals, he whose four gates - the genitals, the belly, the two hands, and speech as the fourth - are well-controlled, he is a knower of natural law (dharma).
सत्यं दमं ह्यार्जवमानृशंस्यं धृतिं तितिक्षामभिसेवमानः ।
स्वाध्यायनित्योऽस्पृहयन्परेषामेकान्तशील्यूर्ध्वगतिर्भवेत्सः ॥२९॥

29. satyaṁ damaṁ hyārjavamānṛśaṁsyaṁ; dhṛtiṁ titikṣāmabhisevamānaḥ ,

saḥ hi satyam damam ārjavam ānṛśaṃsyam dhṛtim titikṣām abhisevamānaḥ,
svādhyāya-nityaḥ,
pareṣām aspṛhayan,
ekāntaśīlyūrdhvagatiḥ bhavet
svādhyāya-nityaḥ,
pareṣām aspṛhayan,
ekāntaśīlyūrdhvagatiḥ bhavet
29.
Indeed, that person who practices truthfulness (satyam), self-control (dama), straightforwardness, non-cruelty, fortitude, and forbearance (titikṣā); who is constantly engaged in self-study (svādhyāya), not coveting the possessions of others, and whose elevated path is characterized by singular conduct, he will attain that state.
सर्वानेताननुचरन्वत्सवच्चतुरः स्तनान् ।
न पावनतमं किंचित्सत्यादध्यगमं क्वचित् ॥३०॥

30. sarvānetānanucaranvatsavaccaturaḥ stanān ,
na pāvanatamaṁ kiṁcitsatyādadhyagamaṁ kvacit.

pāvana-tamam kiṃcit satyāt adhyagamam kvacit

[aham] vatsavat caturaḥ stanān anucaran etān sarvān [guṇān api] [anucaran],
satyāt kiṃcit pāvana-tamam kvacit na adhyagamam
satyāt kiṃcit pāvana-tamam kvacit na adhyagamam

Following all these (virtues) just as a calf follows its four teats, I have never anywhere found anything more purifying than truth (satyam).
आचक्षेऽहं मनुष्येभ्यो देवेभ्यः प्रतिसंचरन् ।
सत्यं स्वर्गस्य सोपानं पारावारस्य नौरिव ॥३१॥

Moving between humans and gods, I declare that truth (satyam) is the ladder to heaven, just as a boat is for crossing the ocean.
यादृशैः संनिवसति यादृशांश्चोपसेवते ।
यादृगिच्छेच्च भवितुं तादृग्भवति पूरुषः ॥३२॥

A person (puruṣa) becomes like those with whom they associate, like those whom they serve, and like that which they wish to become.
यदि सन्तं सेवते यद्यसन्तं तपस्विनं यदि वा स्तेनमेव ।
वासो यथा रङ्गवशं प्रयाति तथा स तेषां वशमभ्युपैति ॥३३॥

33. yadi santaṁ sevate yadyasantaṁ; tapasvinaṁ yadi vā stenameva ,

If one serves a good person, or an evil person, or an ascetic (tapasvin), or even a thief - just as a cloth takes on the color it is dyed with, so too does that individual come under their influence.
सदा देवाः साधुभिः संवदन्ते न मानुषं विषयं यान्ति द्रष्टुम् ।
नेन्दुः समः स्यादसमो हि वायुरुच्चावचं विषयं यः स वेद ॥३४॥

The gods always converse with the virtuous; they do not go to observe human affairs. The moon would not be equal (to the wind); for the wind is indeed unequal. It is the wind that knows all high and low affairs.
अदुष्टं वर्तमाने तु हृदयान्तरपूरुषे ।
तेनैव देवाः प्रीयन्ते सतां मार्गस्थितेन वै ॥३५॥

But when the inner person (puruṣa) dwells blamelessly within the heart, the gods are indeed pleased by that very one who is established on the path of the virtuous.

अपेतदोषानिति तान्विदित्वा दूराद्देवाः संपरिवर्जयन्ति ॥३६॥

Those men who are always engrossed in sensual pleasures (lit. 'penis and stomach'), who are thieves, and whose speech is perpetually harsh – knowing such individuals to be fraught with defects, the gods avoid them from a distance.
न वै देवा हीनसत्त्वेन तोष्याः सर्वाशिना दुष्कृतकर्मणा वा ।
सत्यव्रता ये तु नराः कृतज्ञा धर्मे रतास्तैः सह संभजन्ते ॥३७॥

Indeed, the gods are not to be appeased by a person of weak character, nor by one who eats indiscriminately or performs evil actions (karma). But those men who are truthful in their vows, who are grateful, and who are devoted to righteousness (dharma) – with them do the gods associate.
अव्याहृतं व्याहृताच्छ्रेय आहुः सत्यं वदेद्व्याहृतं तद्द्वितीयम् ।
धर्मं वदेद्व्याहृतं तत्तृतीयं प्रियं वदेद्व्याहृतं तच्चतुर्थम् ॥३८॥

They say that unspoken words are superior to spoken words. Speaking the truth (satya) is considered the second. Speaking in accordance with righteousness (dharma) is the third. Speaking what is pleasing is the fourth.

केनायमावृतो लोकः केन वा न प्रकाशते ।
केन त्यजति मित्राणि केन स्वर्गं न गच्छति ॥३९॥

The Sādhyas said: 'By what is this world enveloped? By what does it fail to manifest? By what does one abandon friends? By what does one fail to reach heaven?'

लोभात्त्यजति मित्राणि सङ्गात्स्वर्गं न गच्छति ॥४०॥

The Hamsa (celestial sage) said: "The world, enveloped by ignorance, does not shine forth due to envy. From greed, one abandons friends, and due to attachment, one does not reach heaven."

The Sadhyas asked: "Who among the Brahmins delights alone? Who, being one, enjoys the company of many? Who is strong even though weak? And who among them does not comprehend conflict?"

प्राज्ञ एको रमते ब्राह्मणानां प्राज्ञ एको बहुभिर्जोषमास्ते ।
प्राज्ञ एको बलवान्दुर्बलोऽपि प्राज्ञ एषां कलहं नान्ववैति ॥४२॥

असाधुत्वं परीवादो मृत्युर्मानुषमुच्यते ॥४४॥

Hamsa said: Self-study (svādhyāya) is declared to be their divine nature, and virtuous conduct (sādhutvam) is their sacred vow (vrata). Wickedness (asādhutvam) and slander (parīvādaḥ) are declared to be their human nature (mānuṣam), which is associated with death (mṛtyuḥ).
भीष्म उवाच ।
संवाद इत्ययं श्रेष्ठः साध्यानां परिकीर्तितः ।
क्षेत्रं वै कर्मणां योनिः सद्भावः सत्यमुच्यते ॥४५॥

Bhishma said: This dialogue (saṃvāda) is declared to be the most excellent among the Sādhyas (celestial beings). The physical body (kṣetram) is indeed the source (yoniḥ) of all actions (karma). Righteousness (sadbhāvaḥ) is said to be truth (satyam).
