ततस्तेष्वपयातेषु रथेषु त्रिषु पाण्डवाः ।
तं ह्रदं प्रत्यपद्यन्त यत्र दुर्योधनोऽभवत् ॥१॥

1. Saṃjaya said: 'Then, after those three chariots had departed, the Pāṇḍavas went towards that lake where Duryodhana was located.'
आसाद्य च कुरुश्रेष्ठ तदा द्वैपायनह्रदम् ।
स्तम्भितं धार्तराष्ट्रेण दृष्ट्वा तं सलिलाशयम् ।
वासुदेवमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुनन्दनः ॥२॥
2. āsādya ca kuruśreṣṭha tadā dvaipāyanahradam ,
stambhitaṁ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa dṛṣṭvā taṁ salilāśayam ,
vāsudevamidaṁ vākyamabravītkurunandanaḥ.

dvaipāyanahradam stambhitam dhārtarāṣṭreṇa
dṛṣṭvā tam salilāśayam vāsudevam
idam vākyam abravīt kurunandanaḥ

tam salilāśayam dṛṣṭvā kurunandanaḥ
idam vākyam vāsudevam abravīt
2. And then, O best of the Kurus, having reached the Dvaipāyana lake and seeing that water reservoir rendered motionless by the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), the delight of the Kurus (Yudhiṣṭhira) spoke these words to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa).
पश्येमां धार्तराष्ट्रेण मायामप्सु प्रयोजिताम् ।
विष्टभ्य सलिलं शेते नास्य मानुषतो भयम् ॥३॥
3. paśyemāṁ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa māyāmapsu prayojitām ,
viṣṭabhya salilaṁ śete nāsya mānuṣato bhayam.

viṣṭabhya salilam śete na asya mānuṣataḥ bhayam
3. इमाम् धार्तराष्ट्रेण अप्सु प्रयोजिताम् मायाम् पश्य सलिलम् विष्टभ्य शेते अस्य मानुषतः भयम् न ।
3. Behold this magical illusion (māyā) employed by Duryodhana in the waters! Having blocked the flow of water, he lies there. He has no fear from any human.
दैवीं मायामिमां कृत्वा सलिलान्तर्गतो ह्ययम् ।
निकृत्या निकृतिप्रज्ञो न मे जीवन्विमोक्ष्यते ॥४॥
4. daivīṁ māyāmimāṁ kṛtvā salilāntargato hyayam ,
nikṛtyā nikṛtiprajño na me jīvanvimokṣyate.
4. daivīm māyām imām kṛtvā salila-antargataḥ hi ayam
nikṛtyā nikṛti-prajñaḥ na me jīvan vimokṣyate
4. अयम् दैवीम् इमाम् मायाम् कृत्वा हि सलिल-अन्तर्गतः निकृति-प्रज्ञः निकृत्या मे जीवन् न विमोक्ष्यते ।
4. Indeed, having created this divine illusion (māyā), he has entered the water. This deceitfully intelligent one will certainly not escape me alive through trickery.
यद्यस्य समरे साह्यं कुरुते वज्रभृत्स्वयम् ।
तथाप्येनं हतं युद्धे लोको द्रक्ष्यति माधव ॥५॥
5. yadyasya samare sāhyaṁ kurute vajrabhṛtsvayam ,
tathāpyenaṁ hataṁ yuddhe loko drakṣyati mādhava.
5. yadi asya samare sāhyam kurute vajrabhṛt svayam
tathā api enam hatam yuddhe lokaḥ drakṣyati mādhava
5. माधव! यदि वज्रभृत् स्वयम् अस्य समरे साह्यम् कुरुते तथा अपि लोकः एनम् युद्धे हतम् द्रक्ष्यति ।
5. O Madhava, even if Indra himself provides assistance to him in battle, still, the world will see him slain in this war.
श्रीवासुदेव उवाच ।
मायाविन इमां मायां मायया जहि भारत ।
मायावी मायया वध्यः सत्यमेतद्युधिष्ठिर ॥६॥
6. śrīvāsudeva uvāca ,
māyāvina imāṁ māyāṁ māyayā jahi bhārata ,
māyāvī māyayā vadhyaḥ satyametadyudhiṣṭhira.
6. śrī-vāsudeva uvāca māyāvinaḥ imām māyām māyayā jahi
bhārata māyāvī māyayā vadhyaḥ satyam etad yudhiṣṭhira
6. श्री-वासुदेव उवाच भारत! मायाविनः इमाम् मायाम् मायया जhi युधिष्ठिर! एतत् सत्यम् मायावी मायया वध्यः ।
6. Lord Vasudeva said: "O Bharata, defeat this illusion (māyā) of the master of illusion by employing (counter-)illusion (māyā)! O Yudhishthira, it is true that a master of illusion should be slain by (counter-)illusion."
क्रियाभ्युपायैर्बहुलैर्मायामप्सु प्रयोज्य ह ।
जहि त्वं भरतश्रेष्ठ पापात्मानं सुयोधनम् ॥७॥
7. kriyābhyupāyairbahulairmāyāmapsu prayojya ha ,
jahi tvaṁ bharataśreṣṭha pāpātmānaṁ suyodhanam.
7. kriyābhyupāyaiḥ bahulaiḥ māyām apsu prayojya ha
jahi tvam bharataśreṣṭha pāpātmānam suyodhanam
7. tvam bharataśreṣṭha,
apsu bahulaiḥ kriyābhyupāyaiḥ māyām ha prayojya pāpātmānam suyodhanam jahi
7. O best of the Bharatas, you must indeed kill the evil-minded Suyodhana, having employed numerous means and deceptions (māyā) in the waters.
क्रियाभ्युपायैरिन्द्रेण निहता दैत्यदानवाः ।
क्रियाभ्युपायैर्बहुभिर्बलिर्बद्धो महात्मना ॥८॥
8. kriyābhyupāyairindreṇa nihatā daityadānavāḥ ,
kriyābhyupāyairbahubhirbalirbaddho mahātmanā.
8. kriyābhyupāyaiḥ indreṇa nihatāḥ daityadānavāḥ
kriyābhyupāyaiḥ bahubhiḥ baliḥ baddhaḥ mahātmanā
8. indreṇa kriyābhyupāyaiḥ daityadānavāḥ nihatāḥ.
mahātmanā bahubhiḥ kriyābhyupāyaiḥ baliḥ baddhaḥ.
8. Through various stratagems, Indra slew the Daityas and Danavas. Similarly, by many means, Bali was bound by the great-souled one.
क्रियाभ्युपायैः पूर्वं हि हिरण्याक्षो महासुरः ।
हिरण्यकशिपुश्चैव क्रिययैव निषूदितौ ।
वृत्रश्च निहतो राजन्क्रिययैव न संशयः ॥९॥
9. kriyābhyupāyaiḥ pūrvaṁ hi hiraṇyākṣo mahāsuraḥ ,
hiraṇyakaśipuścaiva kriyayaiva niṣūditau ,
vṛtraśca nihato rājankriyayaiva na saṁśayaḥ.
9. kriyābhyupāyaiḥ pūrvam hi hiraṇyākṣaḥ
mahāsuraḥ hiraṇyakaśipuḥ ca eva
kriyayā eva niṣūditau vṛtraḥ ca
nihataḥ rājan kriyayā eva na saṁśayaḥ
9. rājan,
pūrvam hi kriyābhyupāyaiḥ mahāsuraḥ hiraṇyākṣaḥ ca hiraṇyakaśipuḥ eva kriyayā eva niṣūditau.
ca vṛtraḥ kriyayā eva nihataḥ,
na saṁśayaḥ.
9. Indeed, formerly, by means of stratagems, the great asura Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu were both slain by similar stratagems. And Vritra, O King, was also killed by stratagems; there is no doubt about it.
तथा पौलस्त्यतनयो रावणो नाम राक्षसः ।
रामेण निहतो राजन्सानुबन्धः सहानुगः ।
क्रियया योगमास्थाय तथा त्वमपि विक्रम ॥१०॥
10. tathā paulastyatanayo rāvaṇo nāma rākṣasaḥ ,
rāmeṇa nihato rājansānubandhaḥ sahānugaḥ ,
kriyayā yogamāsthāya tathā tvamapi vikrama.
10. tathā paulastyatanayaḥ rāvaṇaḥ nāma
rākṣasaḥ rāmeṇa nihataḥ rājan
sānubandhaḥ sahānugaḥ kriyayā yogam
āsthāya tathā tvam api vikrama
10. rājan,
tathā paulastyatanayaḥ rāvaṇaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ sānubandhaḥ sahānugaḥ rāmeṇa nihataḥ.
tathā tvam api kriyayā yogam āsthāya vikrama.
10. Similarly, O King, the demon named Ravana, the son of Pulastya, was slain by Rama, along with his relatives and followers. You too, having resorted to this application (yoga) of stratagem, should act with valor.
क्रियाभ्युपायैर्निहतो मया राजन्पुरातने ।
तारकश्च महादैत्यो विप्रचित्तिश्च वीर्यवान् ॥११॥
11. kriyābhyupāyairnihato mayā rājanpurātane ,
tārakaśca mahādaityo vipracittiśca vīryavān.
11. kriyābhyupāyaiḥ nihataḥ mayā rājan purātane
tārakaḥ ca mahādaityaḥ vipracittiḥ ca vīryavān
11. rājan purātane mayā kriyābhyupāyaiḥ mahādaityaḥ
tārakaḥ ca vīryavān vipracittiḥ ca nihataḥ
11. O King, in ancient times, the great demon Tāraka and the powerful Vipracitti were slain by me through skillful actions.
वातापिरिल्वलश्चैव त्रिशिराश्च तथा विभो ।
सुन्दोपसुन्दावसुरौ क्रिययैव निषूदितौ ॥१२॥
12. vātāpirilvalaścaiva triśirāśca tathā vibho ,
sundopasundāvasurau kriyayaiva niṣūditau.
12. vātāpiḥ ilvalaḥ ca eva triśirāḥ ca tathā vibho
sundopasundau asurau kriyayā eva niṣūditau
12. vibho vātāpiḥ ilvalaḥ ca eva triśirāḥ ca tathā
asurau sundopasundau kriyayā eva niṣūditau
12. And O Lord, Vātāpi, Ilvala, and Triśirā, as well as the two asuras Sunda and Upasunda, were similarly destroyed by action (kriyā) alone.
क्रियाभ्युपायैरिन्द्रेण त्रिदिवं भुज्यते विभो ।
क्रिया बलवती राजन्नान्यत्किंचिद्युधिष्ठिर ॥१३॥
13. kriyābhyupāyairindreṇa tridivaṁ bhujyate vibho ,
kriyā balavatī rājannānyatkiṁcidyudhiṣṭhira.
13. kriyābhyupāyaiḥ indreṇa tridivam bhujyate vibho
kriyā balavatī rājan na anyat kiñcit yudhiṣṭhira
13. vibho indreṇa kriyābhyupāyaiḥ tridivam bhujyate
rājan yudhiṣṭhira kriyā balavatī na anyat kiñcit
13. O Mighty one, by skillful actions, heaven is enjoyed by Indra. O King Yudhiṣṭhira, action (kriyā) is powerful; there is nothing else.
दैत्याश्च दानवाश्चैव राक्षसाः पार्थिवास्तथा ।
क्रियाभ्युपायैर्निहताः क्रियां तस्मात्समाचर ॥१४॥
14. daityāśca dānavāścaiva rākṣasāḥ pārthivāstathā ,
kriyābhyupāyairnihatāḥ kriyāṁ tasmātsamācara.
14. daityāḥ ca dānavāḥ ca eva rākṣasāḥ pārthivāḥ tathā
kriyābhyupāyaiḥ nihatāḥ kriyām tasmāt samācara
14. daityāḥ ca dānavāḥ ca eva rākṣasāḥ pārthivāḥ tathā
kriyābhyupāyaiḥ nihatāḥ tasmāt kriyām samācara
14. And Daityas, Dānavas, Rākṣasas, and earthly kings were similarly destroyed by skillful actions. Therefore, perform actions (kriyā).
संजय उवाच ।
इत्युक्तो वासुदेवेन पाण्डवः संशितव्रतः ।
जलस्थं तं महाराज तव पुत्रं महाबलम् ।
अभ्यभाषत कौन्तेयः प्रहसन्निव भारत ॥१५॥
15. saṁjaya uvāca ,
ityukto vāsudevena pāṇḍavaḥ saṁśitavrataḥ ,
jalasthaṁ taṁ mahārāja tava putraṁ mahābalam ,
abhyabhāṣata kaunteyaḥ prahasanniva bhārata.
15. sañjaya uvāca | iti uktaḥ vāsudevena
pāṇḍavaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ | jalasthaṃ taṃ
mahārāja tava putraṃ mahābalam |
abhyabhāṣata kaunteyaḥ prahasan iva bhārata
15. sañjaya uvāca mahārāja bhārata
vāsudevena iti uktaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ
pāṇḍavaḥ jalasthaṃ mahābalam tava
putraṃ prahasan iva abhyabhāṣata
15. Sañjaya said: O great king, O Bhārata, after Vāsudeva had spoken thus, Kounteya, who was firm in his vow, addressed your immensely powerful son, who was staying in the water, as if laughing.
सुयोधन किमर्थोऽयमारम्भोऽप्सु कृतस्त्वया ।
सर्वं क्षत्रं घातयित्वा स्वकुलं च विशां पते ॥१६॥
16. suyodhana kimartho'yamārambho'psu kṛtastvayā ,
sarvaṁ kṣatraṁ ghātayitvā svakulaṁ ca viśāṁ pate.
16. suyodhana kimarthaḥ ayam ārambhaḥ apsu kṛtaḥ tvayā
| sarvaṃ kṣatraṃ ghātayitvā svakulaṃ ca viśām pate
16. suyodhana viśām pate sarvaṃ kṣatraṃ svakulaṃ ca
ghātayitvā tvayā ayam ārambhaḥ apsu kimarthaḥ kṛtaḥ
16. O Suyodhana, O lord of the people, after having caused the destruction of all kṣatriyas and your own family, for what reason have you undertaken this endeavor in the water?
जलाशयं प्रविष्टोऽद्य वाञ्छञ्जीवितमात्मनः ।
उत्तिष्ठ राजन्युध्यस्व सहास्माभिः सुयोधन ॥१७॥
17. jalāśayaṁ praviṣṭo'dya vāñchañjīvitamātmanaḥ ,
uttiṣṭha rājanyudhyasva sahāsmābhiḥ suyodhana.
17. jalāśayaṃ praviṣṭaḥ adya vāñchan jīvitam ātmanaḥ
| uttiṣṭha rājan yudhyasva saha asmābhiḥ suyodhana
17. suyodhana adya jīvitam ātmanaḥ vāñchan jalāśayam
praviṣṭaḥ rājan uttiṣṭha asmābhiḥ saha yudhyasva
17. Having entered the lake today, desiring to save your own life (ātman) – Rise up, O king Suyodhana, and fight with us!
स च दर्पो नरश्रेष्ठ स च मानः क्व ते गतः ।
यस्त्वं संस्तभ्य सलिलं भीतो राजन्व्यवस्थितः ॥१८॥
18. sa ca darpo naraśreṣṭha sa ca mānaḥ kva te gataḥ ,
yastvaṁ saṁstabhya salilaṁ bhīto rājanvyavasthitaḥ.
18. saḥ ca darpaḥ naraśreṣṭha saḥ ca mānaḥ kva te gataḥ |
yat tvaṃ saṃstabhya salilaṃ bhītaḥ rājan vyavasthitaḥ
18. naraśreṣṭha rājan te saḥ darpaḥ saḥ mānaḥ ca kva
gataḥ yat tvaṃ salilaṃ saṃstabhya bhītaḥ vyavasthitaḥ
18. O best of men, O king, where have that pride and that self-respect of yours gone, that you are now fearfully concealing yourself by holding back the water?
सर्वे त्वां शूर इत्येव जना जल्पन्ति संसदि ।
व्यर्थं तद्भवतो मन्ये शौर्यं सलिलशायिनः ॥१९॥
19. sarve tvāṁ śūra ityeva janā jalpanti saṁsadi ,
vyarthaṁ tadbhavato manye śauryaṁ salilaśāyinaḥ.
19. sarve tvām śūraḥ iti eva janāḥ jalpanti saṃsadi
vyartham tat bhavataḥ manye śauryam salilaśāyinaḥ
19. sarve janāḥ saṃsadi tvām śūraḥ iti eva jalpanti
salilaśāyinaḥ bhavataḥ tat śauryam vyartham manye
19. All the people in the assembly indeed proclaim you to be a hero. Yet, I consider that valor of yours, as you lie in the water, to be futile.
उत्तिष्ठ राजन्युध्यस्व क्षत्रियोऽसि कुलोद्भवः ।
कौरवेयो विशेषेण कुले जन्म च संस्मर ॥२०॥
20. uttiṣṭha rājanyudhyasva kṣatriyo'si kulodbhavaḥ ,
kauraveyo viśeṣeṇa kule janma ca saṁsmara.
20. uttiṣṭha rājan yudhyasva kṣatriyaḥ asi kulodbhavaḥ
kauraveyaḥ viśeṣeṇa kule janma ca saṃsmara
20. rājan uttiṣṭha yudhyasva kṣatriyaḥ asi kulodbhavaḥ
viśeṣeṇa kauraveyaḥ kule janma ca saṃsmara
20. Arise, O king, and fight! You are a warrior (kṣatriya) born of a noble lineage. Especially remember your birth into the Kuru family.
स कथं कौरवे वंशे प्रशंसञ्जन्म चात्मनः ।
युद्धाद्भीतस्ततस्तोयं प्रविश्य प्रतितिष्ठसि ॥२१॥
21. sa kathaṁ kaurave vaṁśe praśaṁsañjanma cātmanaḥ ,
yuddhādbhītastatastoyaṁ praviśya pratitiṣṭhasi.
21. sa katham kaurave vaṃśe praśaṃsan janma ca ātmanaḥ
yuddhāt bhītaḥ tataḥ toyam praviśya pratititiṣṭhasi
21. sa katham kaurave vaṃśe ātmanaḥ janma ca praśaṃsan
yuddhāt bhītaḥ tataḥ toyam praviśya pratititiṣṭhasi
21. How can you, having praised your own (ātman) birth in the Kuru lineage, then, being afraid of battle, enter the water and remain there?
अयुद्धमव्यवस्थानं नैष धर्मः सनातनः ।
अनार्यजुष्टमस्वर्ग्यं रणे राजन्पलायनम् ॥२२॥
22. ayuddhamavyavasthānaṁ naiṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ,
anāryajuṣṭamasvargyaṁ raṇe rājanpalāyanam.
22. ayuddham avyavasthānam na eṣaḥ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ
anāryajuṣṭam asvargyam raṇe rājan palāyanam
22. ayuddham avyavasthānam na eṣaḥ sanātanaḥ dharmaḥ
rājan raṇe palāyanam anāryajuṣṭam asvargyam
22. Not fighting, not standing firm - this is not the eternal (sanātana) constitution (dharma). Fleeing in battle, O king, is not practiced by noble individuals and does not lead to heaven.
कथं पारमगत्वा हि युद्धे त्वं वै जिजीविषुः ।
इमान्निपतितान्दृष्ट्वा पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्पितॄंस्तथा ॥२३॥
23. kathaṁ pāramagatvā hi yuddhe tvaṁ vai jijīviṣuḥ ,
imānnipatitāndṛṣṭvā putrānbhrātṝnpitṝṁstathā.
23. katham pāram agatvā hi yuddhe tvam vai jijīviṣuḥ
imān nipatitān dṛṣṭvā putrān bhrātṝn pitṝn tathā
23. tvam vai imān putrān bhrātṝn pitṝn tathā nipatitān
dṛṣṭvā yuddhe pāram agatvā hi katham jijīviṣuḥ
23. Having seen these sons, brothers, and paternal figures fallen, how can you, indeed, wish to live without having brought the battle to its conclusion?
संबन्धिनो वयस्यांश्च मातुलान्बान्धवांस्तथा ।
घातयित्वा कथं तात ह्रदे तिष्ठसि सांप्रतम् ॥२४॥
24. saṁbandhino vayasyāṁśca mātulānbāndhavāṁstathā ,
ghātayitvā kathaṁ tāta hrade tiṣṭhasi sāṁpratam.
24. sambandhinaḥ vayasyān ca mātulān bāndhavān tathā
ghātayitvā katham tāta hrade tiṣṭhasi sāmpratam
24. tāta,
sambandhinaḥ vayasyān ca mātulān bāndhavān tathā ghātayitvā,
sāmpratam hrade katham tiṣṭhasi?
24. Dear one, having caused these relatives, friends, maternal uncles, and kinsmen to be slain, how can you remain here, calm as if in a tranquil pool, now?
शूरमानी न शूरस्त्वं मिथ्या वदसि भारत ।
शूरोऽहमिति दुर्बुद्धे सर्वलोकस्य शृण्वतः ॥२५॥
25. śūramānī na śūrastvaṁ mithyā vadasi bhārata ,
śūro'hamiti durbuddhe sarvalokasya śṛṇvataḥ.
25. śūramānī na śūraḥ tvam mithyā vadasi bhārata
śūraḥ aham iti durbuddhe sarvalokasya śṛṇvataḥ
25. bhārata,
tvam śūramānī na śūraḥ.
durbuddhe,
sarvalokasya śṛṇvataḥ śūraḥ aham iti mithyā vadasi.
25. O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), you are not brave, though you consider yourself to be a hero. O foolish-minded one, you falsely declare 'I am a hero' while everyone in the world listens.
न हि शूराः पलायन्ते शत्रून्दृष्ट्वा कथंचन ।
ब्रूहि वा त्वं यया धृत्या शूर त्यजसि संगरम् ॥२६॥
26. na hi śūrāḥ palāyante śatrūndṛṣṭvā kathaṁcana ,
brūhi vā tvaṁ yayā dhṛtyā śūra tyajasi saṁgaram.
26. na hi śūrāḥ palāyante śatrūn dṛṣṭvā kathaṃcana
brūhi vā tvam yayā dhṛtyā śūra tyajasi saṃgaram
26. hi śūrāḥ śatrūn dṛṣṭvā कथंचन na palāyante.
vā tvam brūhi,
śūra,
yayā dhṛtyā saṃgaram tyajasi.
26. Indeed, true heroes never flee upon seeing their enemies. So, tell me, O 'brave one' (śūra), by what sort of resolve (dhṛti) do you abandon this battle?
स त्वमुत्तिष्ठ युध्यस्व विनीय भयमात्मनः ।
घातयित्वा सर्वसैन्यं भ्रातॄंश्चैव सुयोधन ॥२७॥
27. sa tvamuttiṣṭha yudhyasva vinīya bhayamātmanaḥ ,
ghātayitvā sarvasainyaṁ bhrātṝṁścaiva suyodhana.
27. saḥ tvam uttiṣṭha yudhyasva vinīya bhayam ātmanaḥ
ghātayitvā sarvasainyam bhrātṝn ca eva suyodhana
27. suyodhana tvam saḥ ātmanaḥ bhayam vinīya sarvasainyam
bhrātṝn ca eva ghātayitvā uttiṣṭha yudhyasva
27. O Suyodhana, having caused the destruction of the entire army and indeed your brothers, you yourself now rise up and fight, casting away the fear from your own being (ātman).
नेदानीं जीविते बुद्धिः कार्या धर्मचिकीर्षया ।
क्षत्रधर्ममपाश्रित्य त्वद्विधेन सुयोधन ॥२८॥
28. nedānīṁ jīvite buddhiḥ kāryā dharmacikīrṣayā ,
kṣatradharmamapāśritya tvadvidhena suyodhana.

28. O Suyodhana, now, for one like you who has embraced the intrinsic nature (kṣatradharma) of a warrior, there should be no thought of preserving your life (jīvite buddhiḥ) with the desire to uphold natural law (dharma).
यत्तत्कर्णमुपाश्रित्य शकुनिं चापि सौबलम् ।
अमर्त्य इव संमोहात्त्वमात्मानं न बुद्धवान् ॥२९॥
29. yattatkarṇamupāśritya śakuniṁ cāpi saubalam ,
amartya iva saṁmohāttvamātmānaṁ na buddhavān.
29. yat tat karṇam upāśritya śakunim ca api saubalam
amartyaḥ iva saṃmohāt tvam ātmānam na buddhavān
29. yat tat tvam karṇam śakunim saubalam ca api
upāśritya amartyaḥ iva saṃmohāt ātmānam na buddhavān
29. Because, having relied on Karna and also Shakuni, the son of Subala, you, due to great delusion, did not understand your own true being (ātman) as if you were an immortal.
तत्पापं सुमहत्कृत्वा प्रतियुध्यस्व भारत ।
कथं हि त्वद्विधो मोहाद्रोचयेत पलायनम् ॥३०॥
30. tatpāpaṁ sumahatkṛtvā pratiyudhyasva bhārata ,
kathaṁ hi tvadvidho mohādrocayeta palāyanam.
30. tat pāpam sumahat kṛtvā pratiyudhyasva bhārata
katham hi tvadvidhaḥ mohāt rocayeta palāyanam
30. bhārata tat sumahat pāpam kṛtvā pratiyudhyasva
hi katham tvadvidhaḥ mohāt palāyanam rocayeta
30. O descendant of Bharata, having indeed committed that enormous sin, now fight back! How could one like you, due to delusion, possibly prefer to flee?
क्व ते तत्पौरुषं यातं क्व च मानः सुयोधन ।
क्व च विक्रान्तता याता क्व च विस्फूर्जितं महत् ॥३१॥
31. kva te tatpauruṣaṁ yātaṁ kva ca mānaḥ suyodhana ,
kva ca vikrāntatā yātā kva ca visphūrjitaṁ mahat.
31. kva te tatpauruṣam yātam kva ca mānaḥ suyodhana
kva ca vikrāntatā yātā kva ca visphūrjitam mahat
31. suyodhana te tatpauruṣam kva yātam ca mānaḥ kva
ca vikrāntatā kva yātā ca mahat visphūrjitam kva
31. O Suyodhana, where has that manliness of yours gone? Where is your pride? Where has your valor vanished? And where is that great display of might?
क्व ते कृतास्त्रता याता किं च शेषे जलाशये ।
स त्वमुत्तिष्ठ युध्यस्व क्षत्रधर्मेण भारत ॥३२॥
32. kva te kṛtāstratā yātā kiṁ ca śeṣe jalāśaye ,
sa tvamuttiṣṭha yudhyasva kṣatradharmeṇa bhārata.
32. kva te kṛtāstratā yātā kim ca śeṣe jalāśaye saḥ
tvam uttiṣṭha yudhyasva kṣatradharmeṇa bhārata
32. bhārata te kṛtāstratā kva yātā ca kim jalāśaye
śeṣe saḥ tvam uttiṣṭha kṣatradharmeṇa yudhyasva
32. Where has your mastery of weapons gone? And why do you lie in the lake? Therefore, rise up and fight according to the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior, O Bhārata!
अस्मान्वा त्वं पराजित्य प्रशाधि पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
अथ वा निहतोऽस्माभिर्भूमौ स्वप्स्यसि भारत ॥३३॥
33. asmānvā tvaṁ parājitya praśādhi pṛthivīmimām ,
atha vā nihato'smābhirbhūmau svapsyasi bhārata.
33. asmān vā tvam parājitya praśādhi pṛthivīm imām
atha vā nihataḥ asmābhiḥ bhūmau svapsyasi bhārata
33. bhārata tvam asmān parājitya vā imām pṛthivīm

33. Either you, having defeated us, rule this earth; or else, struck down by us, you will sleep on the ground, O Bhārata!
एष ते प्रथमो धर्मः सृष्टो धात्रा महात्मना ।
तं कुरुष्व यथातथ्यं राजा भव महारथ ॥३४॥
34. eṣa te prathamo dharmaḥ sṛṣṭo dhātrā mahātmanā ,
taṁ kuruṣva yathātathyaṁ rājā bhava mahāratha.

tam kuruṣva yathātathyam rājā bhava mahāratha
34. mahāratha eṣaḥ te prathamaḥ dharmaḥ dhātrā

34. This is your foremost intrinsic nature (dharma), created by the great-souled Creator. Fulfill that truly; be a king, O great charioteer!
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
नैतच्चित्रं महाराज यद्भीः प्राणिनमाविशेत् ।
न च प्राणभयाद्भीतो व्यपयातोऽस्मि भारत ॥३५॥
35. duryodhana uvāca ,
naitaccitraṁ mahārāja yadbhīḥ prāṇinamāviśet ,
na ca prāṇabhayādbhīto vyapayāto'smi bhārata.
35. Duryodhana uvāca na etat citram mahārāja yat bhīḥ prāṇinam
āviśet na ca prāṇabhayāt bhītaḥ vyapayātaḥ asmi bhārata
35. Duryodhana uvāca mahārāja etat citram na yat bhīḥ prāṇinam
āviśet ca bhārata aham prāṇabhayāt bhītaḥ na vyapayātaḥ asmi
35. Duryodhana said: "O great king, it is not surprising that fear should enter a living being. But I have not fled because of fear for my life, O Bhārata."
अरथश्चानिषङ्गी च निहतः पार्ष्णिसारथिः ।
एकश्चाप्यगणः संख्ये प्रत्याश्वासमरोचयम् ॥३६॥
36. arathaścāniṣaṅgī ca nihataḥ pārṣṇisārathiḥ ,
ekaścāpyagaṇaḥ saṁkhye pratyāśvāsamarocayam.
36. arathaḥ ca aniṣaṅgī ca nihataḥ pārṣṇisārathiḥ
ekaḥ ca api agaṇaḥ saṃkhye pratyāśvāsam arocayam
36. aham arathaḥ ca aniṣaṅgī ca nihataḥ pārṣṇisārathiḥ
ca api ekaḥ agaṇaḥ saṃkhye pratyāśvāsam na arocayam
36. Though without a chariot, without a quiver, and with my charioteer killed, I, who was alone and without an army in battle, did not choose retreat.
न प्राणहेतोर्न भयान्न विषादाद्विशां पते ।
इदमम्भः प्रविष्टोऽस्मि श्रमात्त्विदमनुष्ठितम् ॥३७॥
37. na prāṇahetorna bhayānna viṣādādviśāṁ pate ,
idamambhaḥ praviṣṭo'smi śramāttvidamanuṣṭhitam.
37. na prāṇahetoḥ na bhayāt na viṣādāt viśām pate idam
ambhaḥ praviṣṭaḥ asmi śramāt tu idam anuṣṭhitam
37. viśām pate,
aham prāṇahetoḥ na,
bhayāt na,
viṣādāt na ca idam ambhaḥ praviṣṭaḥ asmi.
tu idam śramāt anuṣṭhitam
37. O lord of the people, I have entered this water not for the sake of my life, nor out of fear, nor out of despondency. Rather, this was done due to exhaustion.
त्वं चाश्वसिहि कौन्तेय ये चाप्यनुगतास्तव ।
अहमुत्थाय वः सर्वान्प्रतियोत्स्यामि संयुगे ॥३८॥
38. tvaṁ cāśvasihi kaunteya ye cāpyanugatāstava ,
ahamutthāya vaḥ sarvānpratiyotsyāmi saṁyuge.
38. tvam ca āśvasihi kaunteya ye ca api anugatāḥ tava
aham utthāya vaḥ sarvān pratiyotsyāmi saṃyuge
38. kaunteya,
tvam ca ye api tava anugatāḥ ca āśvasihi.
aham utthāya vaḥ sarvān saṃyuge pratiyotsyāmi
38. O son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), you and all those who have followed you, take heart! I will rise and fight against all of you in battle.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
आश्वस्ता एव सर्वे स्म चिरं त्वां मृगयामहे ।
तदिदानीं समुत्तिष्ठ युध्यस्वेह सुयोधन ॥३९॥
39. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
āśvastā eva sarve sma ciraṁ tvāṁ mṛgayāmahe ,
tadidānīṁ samuttiṣṭha yudhyasveha suyodhana.
39. Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca āśvastāḥ eva sarve smaḥ ciram tvām
mṛgayāmahe tat idānīm samuttiṣṭha yudhyasva iha Suyodhana
39. Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca Suyodhana,

39. Yudhishthira said: "All of us are indeed reassured; we have been searching for you for a long time. Therefore, rise up now, Suyodhana, and fight here!"
हत्वा वा समरे पार्थान्स्फीतं राज्यमवाप्नुहि ।
निहतो वा रणेऽस्माभिर्वीरलोकमवाप्स्यसि ॥४०॥
40. hatvā vā samare pārthānsphītaṁ rājyamavāpnuhi ,
nihato vā raṇe'smābhirvīralokamavāpsyasi.
40. hatvā vā samare Pārthān sphītam rājyam avāpnuhi
nihataḥ vā raṇe asmābhiḥ vīralokam avāpsyasi
40. Samare Pārthān hatvā,
vā sphītam rājyam avāpnuhi Vā asmābhiḥ raṇe nihataḥ (san) vīralokam avāpsyasi
40. Either, by killing the sons of Pritha (Pārthas) in battle, obtain a prosperous kingdom, or, if killed by us in battle, you will attain the world of heroes.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
यदर्थं राज्यमिच्छामि कुरूणां कुरुनन्दन ।
त इमे निहताः सर्वे भ्रातरो मे जनेश्वर ॥४१॥
41. duryodhana uvāca ,
yadarthaṁ rājyamicchāmi kurūṇāṁ kurunandana ,
ta ime nihatāḥ sarve bhrātaro me janeśvara.

41. Duryodhana said: "O joy of the Kurus (kuru-nandana), the very purpose for which I desired the kingdom, my brothers, all of them, O lord of men (jana-īśvara), are now slain!"
क्षीणरत्नां च पृथिवीं हतक्षत्रियपुंगवाम् ।
नाभ्युत्सहाम्यहं भोक्तुं विधवामिव योषितम् ॥४२॥
42. kṣīṇaratnāṁ ca pṛthivīṁ hatakṣatriyapuṁgavām ,
nābhyutsahāmyahaṁ bhoktuṁ vidhavāmiva yoṣitam.
42. kṣīṇaratnām ca pṛthivīm hatakṣatriyapuṅgavām na
abhyutsahe aham bhoktum vidhavām iva yoṣitam
42. Aham kṣīṇaratnām,
hatakṣatriyapuṅgavām ca pṛthivīm,
vidhavām yoṣitam iva,
bhoktum na abhyutsahe
42. I am unable to enjoy (rule) the earth, which is depleted of its treasures and has its finest warriors (kṣatriya-puṅgavam) slain, just as one would not enjoy a widowed woman.
अद्यापि त्वहमाशंसे त्वां विजेतुं युधिष्ठिर ।
भङ्क्त्वा पाञ्चालपाण्डूनामुत्साहं भरतर्षभ ॥४३॥
43. adyāpi tvahamāśaṁse tvāṁ vijetuṁ yudhiṣṭhira ,
bhaṅktvā pāñcālapāṇḍūnāmutsāhaṁ bharatarṣabha.
43. adya api tu aham āśaṃse tvām vijetum yudhiṣṭhira
bhaṅktvā pāñcālapāṇḍūnām utsāham bharatarṣabha
43. yudhiṣṭhira bharatarṣabha adya api tu aham tvām
vijetum pāñcālapāṇḍūnām utsāham bhaṅktvā āśaṃse
43. O Yudhiṣṭhira, O best of Bharatas, even now I still hope to defeat you, after having crushed the spirit of the Pāñcālas and Pāṇḍavas.
न त्विदानीमहं मन्ये कार्यं युद्धेन कर्हिचित् ।
द्रोणे कर्णे च संशान्ते निहते च पितामहे ॥४४॥
44. na tvidānīmahaṁ manye kāryaṁ yuddhena karhicit ,
droṇe karṇe ca saṁśānte nihate ca pitāmahe.
44. na tu idam idānīm aham manye kāryam yuddhena
karhicit droṇe karṇe ca saṃśānte nihate ca pitāmahe
44. tu idānīm aham yuddhena kāryam karhicit na
manye droṇe ca karṇe ca saṃśānte pitāmahe nihate
44. But now, I certainly do not consider engaging in war to be appropriate at all, since Drona and Karna have ceased to exist, and the paternal grandfather (Bhishma) has been killed.
अस्त्विदानीमियं राजन्केवला पृथिवी तव ।
असहायो हि को राजा राज्यमिच्छेत्प्रशासितुम् ॥४५॥
45. astvidānīmiyaṁ rājankevalā pṛthivī tava ,
asahāyo hi ko rājā rājyamicchetpraśāsitum.
45. astu idam idānīm iyam rājan kevalā pṛthivī tava
asahāyaḥ hi kaḥ rājā rājyam icchet praśāsitum
45. rājan astu idānīm iyam kevalā pṛthivī tava hi
kaḥ asahāyaḥ rājā rājyam praśāsitum icchet
45. O King, let this entire earth now be exclusively yours. For what king, being without allies, would wish to rule a kingdom?
सुहृदस्तादृशान्हित्वा पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्पितॄनपि ।
भवद्भिश्च हृते राज्ये को नु जीवेत मादृशः ॥४६॥
46. suhṛdastādṛśānhitvā putrānbhrātṝnpitṝnapi ,
bhavadbhiśca hṛte rājye ko nu jīveta mādṛśaḥ.
46. suhṛdaḥ tādṛśān hitvā putrān bhrātṝn pitṝn api
bhavadbhiḥ ca hṛte rājye kaḥ nu jīveta mādṛśaḥ
46. tādṛśān suhṛdaḥ putrān bhrātṝn api pitṝn hitvā
bhavadbhiḥ ca rājye hṛte mādṛśaḥ kaḥ nu jīveta
46. After abandoning such friends, sons, brothers, and even fathers, and with the kingdom seized by you all, who like me would indeed want to live?
अहं वनं गमिष्यामि ह्यजिनैः प्रतिवासितः ।
रतिर्हि नास्ति मे राज्ये हतपक्षस्य भारत ॥४७॥
47. ahaṁ vanaṁ gamiṣyāmi hyajinaiḥ prativāsitaḥ ,
ratirhi nāsti me rājye hatapakṣasya bhārata.
47. aham vanam gamiṣyāmi hi ajinaiḥ prativāsitaḥ
ratiḥ hi na asti me rājye hatapakṣasya bhārata
47. bhārata,
aham ajinaiḥ prativāsitaḥ vanam gamiṣyāmi.

hatapakṣasya me rājye ratiḥ na asti.
47. I will go to the forest, clad in deerskins. Indeed, I have no delight in the kingdom, O Bhārata, since my allies have been destroyed.
हतबान्धवभूयिष्ठा हताश्वा हतकुञ्जरा ।
एषा ते पृथिवी राजन्भुङ्क्ष्वैनां विगतज्वरः ॥४८॥
48. hatabāndhavabhūyiṣṭhā hatāśvā hatakuñjarā ,
eṣā te pṛthivī rājanbhuṅkṣvaināṁ vigatajvaraḥ.
48. hatabāndhavabhūyiṣṭhā hatāśvā hatakuñjarā eṣā
te pṛthivī rājan bhuṅkṣva enām vigatajvaraḥ
48. rājan,
hatabāndhavabhūyiṣṭhā,
hatāśvā,
hatakuñjarā eṣā pṛthivī te (asti).

48. O King, this earth is mostly filled with slain relatives, with its horses and elephants killed. Enjoy her, free from distress.
वनमेव गमिष्यामि वसानो मृगचर्मणी ।
न हि मे निर्जितस्यास्ति जीवितेऽद्य स्पृहा विभो ॥४९॥
49. vanameva gamiṣyāmi vasāno mṛgacarmaṇī ,
na hi me nirjitasyāsti jīvite'dya spṛhā vibho.
49. vanam eva gamiṣyāmi vasānaḥ mṛgacarmaṇī na hi
me nirjitasya asti jīvite adya spṛhā vibho
49. vibho,
aham mṛgacarmaṇī vasānaḥ vanam eva gamiṣyāmi.

adya nirjitasya me jīvite spṛhā na asti.
49. I will indeed go to the forest, wearing deerskin garments. Truly, for me, the defeated, there is no longer any desire for life today, O mighty one.
गच्छ त्वं भुङ्क्ष्व राजेन्द्र पृथिवीं निहतेश्वराम् ।
हतयोधां नष्टरत्नां क्षीणवप्रां यथासुखम् ॥५०॥
50. gaccha tvaṁ bhuṅkṣva rājendra pṛthivīṁ nihateśvarām ,
hatayodhāṁ naṣṭaratnāṁ kṣīṇavaprāṁ yathāsukham.
50. gaccha tvam bhuṅkṣva rājendra pṛthivīm nihateśvarām
hatayodhām naṣṭaratnām kṣīṇavaprām yathāsukham
50. rājendra,
tvaṃ yathāsukham nihateśvarām,
hatayodhām,
naṣṭaratnām,
kṣīṇavaprām pṛthivīm gaccha bhuṅkṣva ca.
50. You, O great king, go forth and enjoy the earth as you please, an earth whose rulers are slain, whose warriors are killed, whose treasures are lost, and whose fortifications are diminished.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
आर्तप्रलापान्मा तात सलिलस्थः प्रभाषथाः ।
नैतन्मनसि मे राजन्वाशितं शकुनेरिव ॥५१॥
51. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ārtapralāpānmā tāta salilasthaḥ prabhāṣathāḥ ,
naitanmanasi me rājanvāśitaṁ śakuneriva.

prabhāṣathāḥ | na etat manasi me rājan vāśitam śakuneḥ iva

51. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "My dear father (tāta), while you are situated amidst the waters, do not utter such piteous lamentations of distress. O king, these words do not settle in my mind, just like the mere cry of a bird."
यदि चापि समर्थः स्यास्त्वं दानाय सुयोधन ।
नाहमिच्छेयमवनिं त्वया दत्तां प्रशासितुम् ॥५२॥
52. yadi cāpi samarthaḥ syāstvaṁ dānāya suyodhana ,
nāhamiccheyamavaniṁ tvayā dattāṁ praśāsitum.
52. yadi ca api samarthaḥ syāḥ tvam dānāya suyodhana
| na aham iccheyam avanim tvayā dattām praśāsitum
52. suyodhana yadi ca api tvam dānāya samarthaḥ syāḥ
aham tvayā dattām avanim praśāsitum na iccheyam
52. Even if you, Suyodhana, were capable of giving (the kingdom), I would not wish to rule the earth (kingdom) that was given by you.
अधर्मेण न गृह्णीयां त्वया दत्तां महीमिमाम् ।
न हि धर्मः स्मृतो राजन्क्षत्रियस्य प्रतिग्रहः ॥५३॥
53. adharmeṇa na gṛhṇīyāṁ tvayā dattāṁ mahīmimām ,
na hi dharmaḥ smṛto rājankṣatriyasya pratigrahaḥ.
53. adharmeṇa na gṛhṇīyām tvayā dattām mahīm imām | na
hi dharmaḥ smṛtaḥ rājan kṣatriyasya pratigrahaḥ
53. rājan adharmeṇa tvayā dattām imām mahīm na gṛhṇīyām
hi kṣatriyasya pratigrahaḥ dharmaḥ na smṛtaḥ
53. I would not accept this land, given by you, through an act of unrighteousness (adharma). For, O king, the acceptance of gifts is certainly not considered the proper natural law (dharma) for a warrior (kṣatriya).
त्वया दत्तां न चेच्छेयं पृथिवीमखिलामहम् ।
त्वां तु युद्धे विनिर्जित्य भोक्तास्मि वसुधामिमाम् ॥५४॥
54. tvayā dattāṁ na ceccheyaṁ pṛthivīmakhilāmaham ,
tvāṁ tu yuddhe vinirjitya bhoktāsmi vasudhāmimām.
54. tvayā dattām na ca iccheyam pṛthivīm akhilām aham |
tvām tu yuddhe vinirjitya bhoktā asmi vasudhām imām
54. aham tvayā dattām akhilām pṛthivīm na ca iccheyam
tu yuddhe tvām vinirjitya imām vasudhām bhoktā asmi
54. And I would not wish for the entire earth given by you. But having thoroughly defeated you in battle, I shall indeed rule this land.
अनीश्वरश्च पृथिवीं कथं त्वं दातुमिच्छसि ।
त्वयेयं पृथिवी राजन्किं न दत्ता तदैव हि ॥५५॥
55. anīśvaraśca pṛthivīṁ kathaṁ tvaṁ dātumicchasi ,
tvayeyaṁ pṛthivī rājankiṁ na dattā tadaiva hi.
55. anīśvaraḥ ca pṛthivīm katham tvam dātum icchasi |
tvayā iyam pṛthivī rājan kim na dattā tadā eva hi
55. rājan tvam anīśvaraḥ ca pṛthivīm dātum katham
icchasi kim tvayā iyam pṛthivī tadā eva hi na dattā
55. Being powerless, how do you wish to give the earth? O King, wasn't this very earth given by you back then?
धर्मतो याचमानानां शमार्थं च कुलस्य नः ।
वार्ष्णेयं प्रथमं राजन्प्रत्याख्याय महाबलम् ॥५६॥
56. dharmato yācamānānāṁ śamārthaṁ ca kulasya naḥ ,
vārṣṇeyaṁ prathamaṁ rājanpratyākhyāya mahābalam.
56. dharmataḥ yācamānānām śamārtham ca kulasya naḥ |
vārṣṇeyam prathamam rājan pratyākhyāya mahābalam
56. rājan prathamam mahābalam vārṣṇeyam pratyākhyāya,
(yaḥ) dharmataḥ ca naḥ kulasya śamārtham yācamānānām (āsīt)
56. O King, having first rejected the immensely powerful Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa), who was seeking (justice) according to natural law (dharma) for the sake of peace for our family...
किमिदानीं ददासि त्वं को हि ते चित्तविभ्रमः ।
अभियुक्तस्तु को राजा दातुमिच्छेद्धि मेदिनीम् ॥५७॥
57. kimidānīṁ dadāsi tvaṁ ko hi te cittavibhramaḥ ,
abhiyuktastu ko rājā dātumiccheddhi medinīm.
57. kim idānīm dadāsi tvam kaḥ hi te cittavibhramaḥ
| abhiyuktaḥ tu kaḥ rājā dātum icchet hi medinīm
57. tvam idānīm kim dadāsi? kaḥ hi te cittavibhramaḥ?
abhiyuktaḥ tu kaḥ rājā medinīm dātum hi icchet?
57. What are you giving now? What indeed is this delusion of your mind? What king, being assailed, would indeed wish to give the earth?
न त्वमद्य महीं दातुमीशः कौरवनन्दन ।
आच्छेत्तुं वा बलाद्राजन्स कथं दातुमिच्छसि ।
मां तु निर्जित्य संग्रामे पालयेमां वसुंधराम् ॥५८॥
58. na tvamadya mahīṁ dātumīśaḥ kauravanandana ,
ācchettuṁ vā balādrājansa kathaṁ dātumicchasi ,
māṁ tu nirjitya saṁgrāme pālayemāṁ vasuṁdharām.
58. na tvam adya mahīm dātum īśaḥ
kauravanandana | ācchettum vā balāt rājan
saḥ katham dātum icchasi | mām tu
nirjitya saṃgrāme pālaya imām vasuṃdharām
58. kauravanandana tvam adya mahīm dātum na īśaḥ vā rājan balāt ācchettum,
saḥ (tvam) katham dātum icchasi tu mām saṃgrāme nirjitya imām vasuṃdharām pālaya
58. O scion of Kuru, you are not capable of giving the earth today. Or, O King, how do you, having forcibly seized it, now wish to give it? However, only after conquering me in battle, may you rule this earth (vasuṃdharā).
सूच्यग्रेणापि यद्भूमेरपि ध्रीयेत भारत ।
तन्मात्रमपि नो मह्यं न ददाति पुरा भवान् ॥५९॥
59. sūcyagreṇāpi yadbhūmerapi dhrīyeta bhārata ,
tanmātramapi no mahyaṁ na dadāti purā bhavān.
59. sūcyagreṇa api yat bhūmeḥ api dhrīyeta bhārata
tat mātram api naḥ mahyam na dadāti purā bhavān
59. bhārata bhavān purā sūcyagreṇa api yat bhūmeḥ
api dhrīyeta tat mātram api naḥ mahyam na dadāti
59. O descendant of Bharata, previously you would not grant even to us, nor even to me personally, that minute amount of land which could be held on the tip of a needle.
स कथं पृथिवीमेतां प्रददासि विशां पते ।
सूच्यग्रं नात्यजः पूर्वं स कथं त्यजसि क्षितिम् ॥६०॥
60. sa kathaṁ pṛthivīmetāṁ pradadāsi viśāṁ pate ,
sūcyagraṁ nātyajaḥ pūrvaṁ sa kathaṁ tyajasi kṣitim.
60. sa katham pṛthivīm etām pra dadāsi viśām pate
sūcyagram na atyajaḥ pūrvam sa katham tyajasi kṣitim
60. viśām pate sa katham etām pṛthivīm pra dadāsi pūrvam
sa sūcyagram na atyajaḥ katham kṣitim tyajasi
60. O lord of the people, how can you give away this entire earth (pṛthivī)? You who previously did not relinquish even a needle's point (sūcyagram), how can you now abandon the whole earth (kṣitim)?
एवमैश्वर्यमासाद्य प्रशास्य पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
को हि मूढो व्यवस्येत शत्रोर्दातुं वसुंधराम् ॥६१॥
61. evamaiśvaryamāsādya praśāsya pṛthivīmimām ,
ko hi mūḍho vyavasyeta śatrordātuṁ vasuṁdharām.
61. evam aiśvaryam āsādya pra śāsya pṛthivīm imām
kaḥ hi mūḍhaḥ vyavasyeta śatroḥ dātum vasuṃdharām
61. evam aiśvaryam āsādya imām pṛthivīm pra śāsya hi
kaḥ mūḍhaḥ śatroḥ vasuṃdharām dātum vyavasyeta
61. Indeed, having thus attained such sovereignty (aiśvarya) and governed this entire earth (pṛthivī), what fool would resolve to give the land (vasuṃdharā) to an enemy?
त्वं तु केवलमौर्ख्येण विमूढो नावबुध्यसे ।
पृथिवीं दातुकामोऽपि जीवितेनाद्य मोक्ष्यसे ॥६२॥
62. tvaṁ tu kevalamaurkhyeṇa vimūḍho nāvabudhyase ,
pṛthivīṁ dātukāmo'pi jīvitenādya mokṣyase.
62. tvam tu kevala aurkhyeṇa vimūḍhaḥ na avabudhyase
pṛthivīm dātukāmaḥ api jīvitena adya mokṣyase
62. tu tvam kevala aurkhyeṇa vimūḍhaḥ na avabudhyase
pṛthivīm dātukāmaḥ api adya jīvitena mokṣyase
62. But you, utterly deluded by sheer foolishness, do not comprehend. Even if you desire to give away the earth (pṛthivī), today you will be released from life (i.e., you will die).
अस्मान्वा त्वं पराजित्य प्रशाधि पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
अथ वा निहतोऽस्माभिर्व्रज लोकाननुत्तमान् ॥६३॥
63. asmānvā tvaṁ parājitya praśādhi pṛthivīmimām ,
atha vā nihato'smābhirvraja lokānanuttamān.
63. asmān vā tvam parājitya praśādhi pṛthivīm imām
atha vā nihataḥ asmābhiḥ vraja lokān anuttamān
63. tvam vā asmān parājitya imām pṛthivīm praśādhi
atha vā asmābhiḥ nihataḥ anuttamān lokān vraja
63. Either you defeat us and rule this earth, or, being slain by us, you go to the most excellent worlds.
आवयोर्जीवतो राजन्मयि च त्वयि च ध्रुवम् ।
संशयः सर्वभूतानां विजये नो भविष्यति ॥६४॥
64. āvayorjīvato rājanmayi ca tvayi ca dhruvam ,
saṁśayaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ vijaye no bhaviṣyati.
64. āvayoḥ jīvatoḥ rājan mayi ca tvayi ca dhruvam
saṃśayaḥ sarvabhūtānām vijaye naḥ bhaviṣyati
64. rājan,
āvayoḥ jīvatoḥ mayi ca tvayi ca dhruvam saṃśayaḥ sarvabhūtānām naḥ vijaye bhaviṣyati
64. O King, while we two are living, a doubt will certainly arise among all beings regarding our victory.
जीवितं तव दुष्प्रज्ञ मयि संप्रति वर्तते ।
जीवयेयं त्वहं कामं न तु त्वं जीवितुं क्षमः ॥६५॥
65. jīvitaṁ tava duṣprajña mayi saṁprati vartate ,
jīvayeyaṁ tvahaṁ kāmaṁ na tu tvaṁ jīvituṁ kṣamaḥ.
65. jīvitam tava duṣprajña mayi saṃprati vartate
jīvaye_yam tu aham kāmam na tu tvam jīvitum kṣamaḥ
65. duṣprajña,
tava jīvitam saṃprati mayi vartate,
aham tu kāmam jīvaye_yam,
tvam tu jīvitum na kṣamaḥ
65. O foolish one, your life currently rests with me. I can easily let you live, but you are not capable of living (on your own).
दहने हि कृतो यत्नस्त्वयास्मासु विशेषतः ।
आशीविषैर्विषैश्चापि जले चापि प्रवेशनैः ।
त्वया विनिकृता राजन्राज्यस्य हरणेन च ॥६६॥
66. dahane hi kṛto yatnastvayāsmāsu viśeṣataḥ ,
āśīviṣairviṣaiścāpi jale cāpi praveśanaiḥ ,
tvayā vinikṛtā rājanrājyasya haraṇena ca.
66. dahane hi kṛtaḥ yatnaḥ tvayā asmāsu
viśeṣataḥ āśīviṣaiḥ viṣaiḥ ca
api jale ca api praveśanaiḥ tvayā
vinikṛtā rājan rājyasya haraṇena ca
66. rājan,
hi tvayā asmāsu viśeṣataḥ dahane,
āśīviṣaiḥ ca viṣaiḥ api,
jale ca api praveśanaiḥ yatnaḥ kṛtaḥ.
ca rājyasya haraṇena tvayā (aham) vinikṛtā
66. Indeed, O King, great effort was made by you, specifically against us, through burning, through poisonous snakes and (other) poisons, and by plunging (us) into water. And you have harmed me by seizing the kingdom.
एतस्मात्कारणात्पाप जीवितं ते न विद्यते ।
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ युध्यस्व तत्ते श्रेयो भविष्यति ॥६७॥
67. etasmātkāraṇātpāpa jīvitaṁ te na vidyate ,
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha yudhyasva tatte śreyo bhaviṣyati.
67. etasmat kāraṇāt pāpa jīvitam te na vidyate uttiṣṭha
uttiṣṭha yudhyasva tat te śreyaḥ bhaviṣyati
67. pāpa etasmat kāraṇāt te jīvitam na vidyate uttiṣṭha
uttiṣṭha yudhyasva tat te śreyaḥ bhaviṣyati
67. O sinful one, for this reason, your living is not justified. Arise, arise! Fight! That will be truly beneficial for you.
संजय उवाच ।
एवं तु विविधा वाचो जययुक्ताः पुनः पुनः ।
कीर्तयन्ति स्म ते वीरास्तत्र तत्र जनाधिप ॥६८॥
68. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evaṁ tu vividhā vāco jayayuktāḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
kīrtayanti sma te vīrāstatra tatra janādhipa.
68. sañjaya uvāca evam tu vividhāḥ vācaḥ jayayuktāḥ punaḥ
punaḥ kīrtayanti sma te vīrāḥ tatra tatra janādhipa
68. janādhipa sañjaya uvāca evam tu te vīrāḥ vividhāḥ
jayayuktāḥ vācaḥ punaḥ punaḥ tatra tatra kīrtayanti sma
68. Sanjaya said: O lord of men, those heroes were indeed repeatedly proclaiming various words imbued with victory in different places.
