सूत उवाच ।
तत आहूय पुत्रं स्वं जरत्कारुर्भुजंगमा ।
वासुकेर्नागराजस्य वचनादिदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. sūta uvāca ,
tata āhūya putraṁ svaṁ jaratkārurbhujaṁgamā ,
vāsukernāgarājasya vacanādidamabravīt.
1. sūtaḥ uvāca | tataḥ āhūya putram svam jaratkāruḥ
bhujagamā | vāsukeḥ nāgarājasya vacanāt idam abravīt
1. Sūta said: Then, after calling her own son, Jaratkāru, the serpent maiden, spoke these words according to the command of Vāsuki, the king of serpents.
अहं तव पितुः पुत्र भ्रात्रा दत्ता निमित्ततः ।
कालः स चायं संप्राप्तस्तत्कुरुष्व यथातथम् ॥२॥
2. ahaṁ tava pituḥ putra bhrātrā dattā nimittataḥ ,
kālaḥ sa cāyaṁ saṁprāptastatkuruṣva yathātatham.
2. aham tava pituḥ putra bhrātrā dattā nimittataḥ |
kālaḥ sa ca ayam samprāptaḥ tat kuruṣva yathātatham
2. (She said:) "O son, I was given by your maternal uncle to your father for a specific purpose. That time has now arrived, so you must do what is appropriate."
आस्तीक उवाच ।
किंनिमित्तं मम पितुर्दत्ता त्वं मातुलेन मे ।
तन्ममाचक्ष्व तत्त्वेन श्रुत्वा कर्तास्मि तत्तथा ॥३॥
3. āstīka uvāca ,
kiṁnimittaṁ mama piturdattā tvaṁ mātulena me ,
tanmamācakṣva tattvena śrutvā kartāsmi tattathā.
3. āstīkaḥ uvāca | kim nimittam mama pituḥ dattā tvam mātulena
me | tat mama ācakṣva tattvena śrutvā kartā asmi tat tathā
3. Āstīka said: "For what purpose were you given to my father by my maternal uncle? Please tell me that truthfully; after hearing it, I will do it accordingly."
सूत उवाच ।
तत आचष्ट सा तस्मै बान्धवानां हितैषिणी ।
भगिनी नागराजस्य जरत्कारुरविक्लवा ॥४॥
4. sūta uvāca ,
tata ācaṣṭa sā tasmai bāndhavānāṁ hitaiṣiṇī ,
bhaginī nāgarājasya jaratkāruraviklavā.
4. sūtaḥ uvāca | tataḥ ācaṣṭa sā tasmai bāndhavānām
hitaiṣiṇī | bhaginī nāgarājasya jaratkāruḥ aviklavā
4. Sūta said: Then, Jaratkāru, the sister of the king of serpents, who was well-wishing towards her relatives and undaunted, recounted it to him.
भुजगानामशेषाणां माता कद्रूरिति श्रुतिः ।
तया शप्ता रुषितया सुता यस्मान्निबोध तत् ॥५॥
5. bhujagānāmaśeṣāṇāṁ mātā kadrūriti śrutiḥ ,
tayā śaptā ruṣitayā sutā yasmānnibodha tat.
5. bhujagānām aśeṣāṇām mātā kadrūḥ iti śrutiḥ |
tayā śaptā ruṣitayā sutāḥ yasmāt nibodha tat
5. “The tradition (or sacred text) states that Kadrū was the mother of all serpents. Because her sons were cursed by her, who was angered, learn that reason.”
उच्चैःश्रवाः सोऽश्वराजो यन्मिथ्या न कृतो मम ।
विनतानिमित्तं पणिते दासभावाय पुत्रकाः ॥६॥
6. uccaiḥśravāḥ so'śvarājo yanmithyā na kṛto mama ,
vinatānimittaṁ paṇite dāsabhāvāya putrakāḥ.
6. uccaiḥśravāḥ saḥ aśvarājaḥ yat mithyā na kṛtaḥ
mama | vinatānimittam paṇite dāsabhāvāya putrakāḥ
6. O sons! Because that king of horses, Ucchaiḥśravas, was not falsely claimed by me when the wager was made concerning Vinatā, which led to servitude (therefore you are cursed).
जनमेजयस्य वो यज्ञे धक्ष्यत्यनिलसारथिः ।
तत्र पञ्चत्वमापन्नाः प्रेतलोकं गमिष्यथ ॥७॥
7. janamejayasya vo yajñe dhakṣyatyanilasārathiḥ ,
tatra pañcatvamāpannāḥ pretalokaṁ gamiṣyatha.
7. janamejayasya vaḥ yajñe dhakṣyati anilasārathiḥ
| tatra pañcatvam āpannāḥ pretalokam gamiṣyatha
7. Fire, whose charioteer is the wind, will burn you in Janamejaya's sacrifice. Then, having attained death, you will go to the world of the departed.
तां च शप्तवतीमेवं साक्षाल्लोकपितामहः ।
एवमस्त्विति तद्वाक्यं प्रोवाचानुमुमोद च ॥८॥
8. tāṁ ca śaptavatīmevaṁ sākṣāllokapitāmahaḥ ,
evamastviti tadvākyaṁ provācānumumoda ca.
8. tām ca śaptavatīm evam sākṣāt lokapitāmahaḥ |
evam astu iti tat vākyam provāca anumumoda ca
8. And directly, the Grandfather of the Worlds (Brahmā) said to her, who had cursed in this manner, 'So be it,' and he approved that statement.
वासुकिश्चापि तच्छ्रुत्वा पितामहवचस्तदा ।
अमृते मथिते तात देवाञ्शरणमीयिवान् ॥९॥
9. vāsukiścāpi tacchrutvā pitāmahavacastadā ,
amṛte mathite tāta devāñśaraṇamīyivān.
9. vāsukiḥ ca api tat śrutvā pitāmahāvacas tadā
| amṛte mathite tāta devān śaraṇam īyivān
9. And Vāsuki also, having heard that statement of Brahmā then, O dear one, went to the gods for refuge after the nectar had been churned.
सिद्धार्थाश्च सुराः सर्वे प्राप्यामृतमनुत्तमम् ।
भ्रातरं मे पुरस्कृत्य प्रजापतिमुपागमन् ॥१०॥
10. siddhārthāśca surāḥ sarve prāpyāmṛtamanuttamam ,
bhrātaraṁ me puraskṛtya prajāpatimupāgaman.
10. siddhārthāḥ ca surāḥ sarve prāpya amṛtam anuttamam
| bhrātaram me puraskṛtya prajāpatim upāgaman
10. And all the gods, having achieved their purpose by obtaining the unsurpassed nectar, approached Prajāpati, honoring my brother.
ते तं प्रसादयामासुर्देवाः सर्वे पितामहम् ।
राज्ञा वासुकिना सार्धं स शापो न भवेदिति ॥११॥
11. te taṁ prasādayāmāsurdevāḥ sarve pitāmaham ,
rājñā vāsukinā sārdhaṁ sa śāpo na bhavediti.
11. te tam prasādayāmāsuḥ devāḥ sarve pitāmaham
rājñā vāsukinā sārdham sa śāpaḥ na bhavet iti
11. All those gods, together with King Vāsuki, propitiated the grandfather (Brahmā), [praying] that this curse might not come to pass.
वासुकिर्नागराजोऽयं दुःखितो ज्ञातिकारणात् ।
अभिशापः स मात्रास्य भगवन्न भवेदिति ॥१२॥
12. vāsukirnāgarājo'yaṁ duḥkhito jñātikāraṇāt ,
abhiśāpaḥ sa mātrāsya bhagavanna bhavediti.
12. vāsukiḥ nāgarājaḥ ayam duḥkhitaḥ jñātikāraṇāt
abhiśāpaḥ sa mātrā asya bhagavan na bhavet iti
12. This king of the Nāgas, Vāsuki, is distressed on account of his relatives. O Revered One, let that curse of his mother not come to pass.
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
जरत्कारुर्जरत्कारुं यां भार्यां समवाप्स्यति ।
तत्र जातो द्विजः शापाद्भुजगान्मोक्षयिष्यति ॥१३॥
13. brahmovāca ,
jaratkārurjaratkāruṁ yāṁ bhāryāṁ samavāpsyati ,
tatra jāto dvijaḥ śāpādbhujagānmokṣayiṣyati.
13. brahmā uvāca jaratkāruḥ jaratkārum yām bhāryām samavāpsyati
tatra jātaḥ dvijaḥ śāpāt bhujagān mokṣayiṣyati
13. Brahmā said: 'The Brāhmaṇa who will be born there from the wife named Jaratkāru, whom Jaratkāru will obtain, will deliver the serpents from the curse.'
जरत्कारुरुवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं वासुकिः पन्नगेश्वरः ।
प्रादान्माममरप्रख्य तव पित्रे महात्मने ।
प्रागेवानागते काले तत्र त्वं मय्यजायथाः ॥१४॥
14. jaratkāruruvāca ,
etacchrutvā tu vacanaṁ vāsukiḥ pannageśvaraḥ ,
prādānmāmamaraprakhya tava pitre mahātmane ,
prāgevānāgate kāle tatra tvaṁ mayyajāyathāḥ.
14. jaratkāruḥ uvāca etat śrutvā tu vacanam
vāsukiḥ pannageśvaraḥ prādāt mām
amaraprakhya tava pitre mahātmane prāk eva
anāgate kāle tatra tvam mayi ajāyathāḥ
14. Jaratkāru [the princess] said: 'But after hearing this speech, Vāsuki, the lord of serpents, gave me, who am like a god, to your great-souled father [the sage Jaratkāru]. Indeed, even before the appointed time had arrived, you were born from me there.'
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तो भयान्नस्त्रातुमर्हसि ।
भ्रातरं चैव मे तस्मात्त्रातुमर्हसि पावकात् ॥१५॥
15. ayaṁ sa kālaḥ saṁprāpto bhayānnastrātumarhasi ,
bhrātaraṁ caiva me tasmāttrātumarhasi pāvakāt.
15. ayam sa kālaḥ saṃprāptaḥ bhayāt naḥ trātum arhasi
bhrātaram ca eva me tasmāt trātum arhasi pāvakāt
15. This is the appointed time that has arrived; you ought to save us from fear. And you ought to save my brother (Vāsuki) from that fire.
अमोघं नः कृतं तत्स्याद्यदहं तव धीमते ।
पित्रे दत्ता विमोक्षार्थं कथं वा पुत्र मन्यसे ॥१६॥
16. amoghaṁ naḥ kṛtaṁ tatsyādyadahaṁ tava dhīmate ,
pitre dattā vimokṣārthaṁ kathaṁ vā putra manyase.
16. amogham naḥ kṛtam tat syāt yat aham tava dhīmate
pitre dattā vimokṣārtham katham vā putra manyase
16. May that deed performed by us be fruitful, by which I was given to your wise father for the sake of liberation. Or what do you think, son?
सूत उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा सोऽस्तीको मातरं तदा ।
अब्रवीद्दुःखसंतप्तं वासुकिं जीवयन्निव ॥१७॥
17. sūta uvāca ,
evamuktastathetyuktvā so'stīko mātaraṁ tadā ,
abravīdduḥkhasaṁtaptaṁ vāsukiṁ jīvayanniva.
17. sūtaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ tathā iti uktvā saḥ astīkaḥ
mātaram tadā abravīt duḥkhasaṃtaptam vāsukim jīvayan iva
17. Sūta said: Being addressed in this way, Astika then replied to his mother with 'So be it!', speaking as if he were reviving the sorrow-stricken Vāsuki.
अहं त्वां मोक्षयिष्यामि वासुके पन्नगोत्तम ।
तस्माच्छापान्महासत्त्व सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१८॥
18. ahaṁ tvāṁ mokṣayiṣyāmi vāsuke pannagottama ,
tasmācchāpānmahāsattva satyametadbravīmi te.
18. aham tvām mokṣayiṣyāmi vāsuke pannagottama
tasmāt śāpāt mahāsattva satyam etat bravīmi te
18. O Vāsuki, best of serpents, O great being, I will release you from that curse. I tell you this truth.
भव स्वस्थमना नाग न हि ते विद्यते भयम् ।
प्रयतिष्ये तथा सौम्य यथा श्रेयो भविष्यति ।
न मे वागनृतं प्राह स्वैरेष्वपि कुतोऽन्यथा ॥१९॥
19. bhava svasthamanā nāga na hi te vidyate bhayam ,
prayatiṣye tathā saumya yathā śreyo bhaviṣyati ,
na me vāganṛtaṁ prāha svaireṣvapi kuto'nyathā.
19. bhava svasthamanāḥ nāga na hi te
vidyate bhayam prayatiṣye tathā saumya
yathā śreyaḥ bhaviṣyati na me vāk
anṛtam prāha svair_eṣu api kutaḥ anyathā
19. O Nāga, be at ease in your mind, for indeed there is no fear for you. O gentle one, I will strive in such a way that good fortune will come to pass. My word never speaks a falsehood, even in my free moments; how could it be otherwise (now)?
तं वै नृपवरं गत्वा दीक्षितं जनमेजयम् ।
वाग्भिर्मङ्गलयुक्ताभिस्तोषयिष्येऽद्य मातुल ।
यथा स यज्ञो नृपतेर्निर्वर्तिष्यति सत्तम ॥२०॥
20. taṁ vai nṛpavaraṁ gatvā dīkṣitaṁ janamejayam ,
vāgbhirmaṅgalayuktābhistoṣayiṣye'dya mātula ,
yathā sa yajño nṛpaternirvartiṣyati sattama.
20. tam vai nṛpavaram gatvā dīkṣitam
janamejayam vāgbhiḥ maṅgalayuktābhiḥ
toṣayiṣye adya mātula yathā saḥ
yajñaḥ nṛpateḥ nirvartiṣyati sattama
20. O maternal uncle, O excellent one, having gone to that best of kings, Janamejaya, who is performing the sacrifice, I will now satisfy him with auspicious words so that that sacrifice of the king will indeed cease.
स संभावय नागेन्द्र मयि सर्वं महामते ।
न ते मयि मनो जातु मिथ्या भवितुमर्हति ॥२१॥
21. sa saṁbhāvaya nāgendra mayi sarvaṁ mahāmate ,
na te mayi mano jātu mithyā bhavitumarhati.
21. sa saṃbhāvaya nāgendra mayi sarvam mahāmate
na te mayi manaḥ jātu mithyā bhavitum arhati
21. O great-minded King of Serpents, you should believe completely in me. Your thoughts about me can never be mistaken.
वासुकिरुवाच ।
आस्तीक परिघूर्णामि हृदयं मे विदीर्यते ।
दिशश्च न प्रजानामि ब्रह्मदण्डनिपीडितः ॥२२॥
22. vāsukiruvāca ,
āstīka parighūrṇāmi hṛdayaṁ me vidīryate ,
diśaśca na prajānāmi brahmadaṇḍanipīḍitaḥ.
22. vāsukiḥ uvāca āstīka parighūrṇāmi hṛdayam me
vidīryate diśaḥ ca na prajānāmi brahmadṇḍanipīḍitaḥ
22. Vasuki said, 'O Astika, I am reeling; my heart is breaking. Afflicted by the Brahma-danda, I cannot even discern the directions.'
आस्तीक उवाच ।
न संतापस्त्वया कार्यः कथंचित्पन्नगोत्तम ।
दीप्तादग्नेः समुत्पन्नं नाशयिष्यामि ते भयम् ॥२३॥
23. āstīka uvāca ,
na saṁtāpastvayā kāryaḥ kathaṁcitpannagottama ,
dīptādagneḥ samutpannaṁ nāśayiṣyāmi te bhayam.
23. āstīka uvāca na saṃtāpaḥ tvayā kāryaḥ kathaṃcit
pannagottama dīptāt agneḥ samutpannam nāśayiṣyāmi te bhayam
23. Astika said, 'O best of serpents, you should not feel any distress whatsoever. I will destroy your fear, which has arisen from the blazing fire.'
ब्रह्मदण्डं महाघोरं कालाग्निसमतेजसम् ।
नाशयिष्यामि मात्र त्वं भयं कार्षीः कथंचन ॥२४॥
24. brahmadaṇḍaṁ mahāghoraṁ kālāgnisamatejasam ,
nāśayiṣyāmi mātra tvaṁ bhayaṁ kārṣīḥ kathaṁcana.
24. brahmadaṇḍam mahāghoram kālāgnisamatejasam
nāśayiṣyāmi mātra tvam bhayam kārṣīḥ kathaṃcana
24. I will destroy the Brahma-danda, which is extremely terrible and whose brilliance is like the fire of destruction. You, however, should not feel any fear at all.
सूत उवाच ।
ततः स वासुकेर्घोरमपनीय मनोज्वरम् ।
आधाय चात्मनोऽङ्गेषु जगाम त्वरितो भृशम् ॥२५॥
25. sūta uvāca ,
tataḥ sa vāsukerghoramapanīya manojvaram ,
ādhāya cātmano'ṅgeṣu jagāma tvarito bhṛśam.
25. sūta uvāca tataḥ sa vāsukeḥ ghoram apanīya manojvaram
ādhāya ca ātmanaḥ aṅgeṣu jagāma tvaritaḥ bhṛśam
25. Suta said, 'Then he (Astika), having removed Vasuki's terrible mental agony and having taken it upon his own body, went away very quickly.'
जनमेजयस्य तं यज्ञं सर्वैः समुदितं गुणैः ।
मोक्षाय भुजगेन्द्राणामास्तीको द्विजसत्तमः ॥२६॥
26. janamejayasya taṁ yajñaṁ sarvaiḥ samuditaṁ guṇaiḥ ,
mokṣāya bhujagendrāṇāmāstīko dvijasattamaḥ.
26. janamejayasya tam yajñam sarvaiḥ samuditam guṇaiḥ
mokṣāya bhujagendrāṇām āstīkaḥ dvijasattamaḥ
26. The best of brahmins, Astika, (approached) that sacrifice of Janamejaya, which was endowed with all virtues, for the liberation of the lordly serpents.
स गत्वापश्यदास्तीको यज्ञायतनमुत्तमम् ।
वृतं सदस्यैर्बहुभिः सूर्यवह्निसमप्रभैः ॥२७॥
27. sa gatvāpaśyadāstīko yajñāyatanamuttamam ,
vṛtaṁ sadasyairbahubhiḥ sūryavahnisamaprabhaiḥ.
27. saḥ gatvā apaśyat āstīkaḥ yajñāyatanam uttamam
vṛtam sadasyaiḥ bahubhiḥ sūryavahnisamaprabhaiḥ
27. Having gone there, Astika saw that excellent sacrificial ground, which was surrounded by many members (of the assembly) whose splendor was equal to the sun and fire.
स तत्र वारितो द्वाःस्थैः प्रविशन्द्विजसत्तमः ।
अभितुष्टाव तं यज्ञं प्रवेशार्थी द्विजोत्तमः ॥२८॥
28. sa tatra vārito dvāḥsthaiḥ praviśandvijasattamaḥ ,
abhituṣṭāva taṁ yajñaṁ praveśārthī dvijottamaḥ.
28. saḥ tatra vāritaḥ dvāḥsthaiḥ praviśan dvijasattamaḥ
abhitustāva tam yajñam praveśārthī dvijottamaḥ
28. Although hindered there by the doorkeepers, that best of brahmins, wishing to enter, praised that sacrifice.
